IGCSE Science Tutor in Remraam

An IGCSE science tutor in Remraam earns the hour on specifics: electromagnetism answered without a causal link, an equation left unbalanced, a long biology answer out of sequence, a method a reader could not repeat. This page works through what each science paper actually tests and where the marks go, subject by subject. Lessons reach Remraam one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not visit UAE homes.

IB & IGCSE in Remraam

Three sciences, and each loses marks in its own way

A student described as weak at science is usually losing marks in three quite different ways at once, one per subject, and the three need different work. Physics loses marks to missing causal links and to mathematical execution. Chemistry loses them to notation: unbalanced equations, absent state symbols, unclaimed analysis marks. Biology loses them to imprecise terminology and to answers given out of sequence. None of those is a general science problem and none responds to general science revision.

Across all three sits a fourth category that behaves unlike the rest: practical and method questions. These follow rules rather than requiring laboratory instinct, and the rules are specific. A method has to be repeatable by a stranger, with quantities and controls stated. Units belong in table headings rather than beside values. Graphs need the dependent variable on the right axis and a line of best fit. A controlled variable needs a stated means of control, not just a name.

That fourth category is the best-value work available in science tutoring, because it appears in every paper in all three subjects and almost nobody is taught it directly. A fortnight of practical-question drilling lifts physics, chemistry and biology at the same time, which makes it the one intervention worth doing before any topic is revisited.

Remraam sets the practical conditions. It is a low-rise apartment community in Dubailand, built as the Al Thamam and Al Ramth clusters with its own park and retail, reached from Al Qudra Road and Emirates Road. South View School sits close by and takes students through Year 11, so the run home is short by the standards of this belt and an early-evening session with a student who is not yet tired is genuinely available.

Underneath all four categories sits a fifth that belongs to mathematics rather than to science. Rearrangement, standard form, proportional reasoning and gradients appear constantly in physics and chemistry, and a student who is competent but slow at them loses marks to time in both subjects while appearing to lack the science. Separating that out is often the single most efficient thing a first session can do, because repairing it moves marks in two subjects at once and sometimes in the mathematics paper as well.

The one thing this page will not claim is that online lessons replace a laboratory. The experiment belongs to the school, its equipment and its safety procedures. What a session does is teach everything the paper asks about practical work, which is where those marks actually sit. Home visits are a service IB Gram runs in India only, and nothing here should be read as an offer to arrive at a Remraam address. The sections below take each subject in turn, then the rules that apply across all of them.

At a glance

  • Physics, chemistry and biology lose marks in three different characteristic ways
  • Practical and method questions follow rules and appear in every science paper
  • A fortnight of practical-question drilling lifts all three subjects at once
  • The experiment belongs to the school; the paper tests the surrounding skills
  • Market rates for a qualified online subject tutor in Dubai run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour (Unitors)

Science at IGCSE arrives in two shapes under two boards, and the codes matter more than the board name does.

SEPARATEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Separate sciences

Physics, chemistry and biology as three qualifications with three sets of papers. Cambridge codes are 0625 Physics, 0620 Chemistry and 0610 Biology; Pearson codes are 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1. Greater content depth per subject and three independent grades.

Separate sciences keep the widest sixth-form options open, including A Level or Higher Level Diploma routes in each subject. For a Remraam student aiming at medicine or engineering this is the usual route, and the subject-specific losses on this page are easiest to isolate within it.

COMBINEDAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Combined and coordinated science

Content from all three sciences examined across fewer papers, as a single or double award depending on the school's route. Narrower content with each question carrying proportionally more of the grade, so a weak strand is more exposed.

Past papers must come from the award route specifically. Practising separate-science papers for a combined award is a common and avoidable error, because the paper pattern and the depth expected are its own.

AFTER-11Ages 16+ · Year 12 entry

Science beyond Year 11

IGCSE science grades decide access to A Level sciences and to Diploma sciences at Higher or Standard Level. The step is largest in physics and chemistry, where mathematical demand and the requirement to justify both rise sharply in the first term.

Students from this community generally sit IGCSE locally and then move schools, arriving in a sixth form alongside students from several boards. A short bridging block over the summer evens out the specific gaps rather than reteaching whole subjects.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below is subject detail rather than a list: what each paper examines and the loss that recurs most in marked work.

Physics

0625 Core and Extended; 4PH1

Electricity, electromagnetism, waves, forces and energy. The signature loss is an answer that states what happens without the because, followed closely by rearrangement and standard-form errors under time.

Chemistry

0620 Core and Extended; 4CH1

Moles, electrolysis, rates, acids and bases and organic. Unbalanced equations and missing state symbols are mechanical losses; qualitative analysis questions are available marks routinely left unclaimed.

Biology

0610 Core and Extended; 4BI1

Long-answer questions reward sequence and precise terminology: transport described without water potential, or respiration without named products, loses marks understanding alone should have earned.

Combined Science

Single and double award

Content from all three across fewer papers, so revision priorities differ. One weak strand costs proportionally more here than it would inside a single subject's own papers.

Coordinated Science

Double award

A structured route with its own paper pattern. Past papers have to come from this route, since separate-science papers are the wrong practice material at the wrong depth.

Mathematics

0580 and 4MA1

Named because weak maths is the commonest hidden cause of science underperformance. Rearrangement, standard form and gradients carry marks across all three science papers simultaneously.

Computer Science

IGCSE

Binary, hexadecimal and data representation reuse the number work physics calculations depend on, and trace tables reward the same mechanical care as shown working.

Geography

IGCSE

Often taken alongside sciences and sharing the data-interpretation discipline: read the axes, units and scale before applying any content knowledge to a figure.

Arabic as a second language

IGCSE

Named because it competes for the same evenings. Separate from the Arabic that KHDA requires every Dubai private school to teach alongside its licensed curriculum.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, chosen by which of the subject-specific losses the marked work shows. All are delivered over live video.

Practical-question fortnight

A short block on method, table, graph and variable questions across all three sciences at once, because the rules are shared. Deliberately short, and usually the first thing worth buying.

  • Methods rewritten until a stranger could repeat them
  • Tables and graphs drilled against the conventions
  • Controlled variables given a stated means of control
  • Accuracy and precision separated explicitly

One science, weekly

A single science taken weekly where one subject is clearly behind the other two. Better value than splitting an hour three ways, which produces three sets of homework and no practice time.

  • Follows the school's own topic sequence
  • Board and code fixed from the first session
  • Timed questions on the topic just covered
  • Weekly notes naming the next target

Maths-inside-science block

A block on rearrangement, standard form, units and gradients, taught separately from any science so that only one skill is tested at a time. Lifts physics and chemistry simultaneously.

  • Pure manipulation practice using science formulas
  • Standard form and prefixes drilled for speed
  • Gradients always converted to a quantity with units
  • Retested on science questions afterwards

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Remraam

01

What each science paper actually tests

The three sciences look similar on a timetable and examine different things. Physics is the most mathematical: rearrangement, standard form, proportional reasoning and graph gradients appear throughout, and a student who is slow at any of them loses physics marks that resemble physics gaps. Chemistry is the most notational: equations, state symbols, units and significant figures are assessed constantly, and loose presentation costs marks that understanding earned. Biology is the most linguistic: terminology precision and the order of a long answer carry real credit.

Both boards examine across more than one paper per subject, and the papers within a subject are not interchangeable either. Shorter structured questions reward speed and precision; extended questions reward sequence and explicit reasoning. A student who allocates the same time per mark across a whole paper runs short, and one who never decides a question order abandons marks at the end that they could have collected.

Practical skills are examined in every one of these papers, in one form or another, and the form depends on which paper the school enters students for. Some centres use a practical-style written paper focused entirely on experimental skills. Confirming which paper a student sits changes what the final weeks should contain, and it is a question for the department rather than a guess.

The practical consequence of all this is that a plan should name the paper, not just the subject. Preparation for a structured paper and preparation for an extended-response paper look different, and preparation for a practical-skills paper looks different again.

02

Physics: the causal link and the arithmetic

  • In an explanation, every sentence should contain a because
  • Answer to the mark allocation: six marks wants six creditable statements
  • Electricity and electromagnetism need the reasoning learned, not the result
  • Always state what a gradient physically represents, with units

Physics losses in this corridor concentrate in two places and both are diagnosable from a single marked paper. The first is explanation. A question asking why a current increases receives a description of what happens, and the explanation marks go uncollected while the recall marks arrive. The repair is a rule the student applies themselves: in an explanation, every sentence contains a because, and the answer contains as many creditable statements as the question has marks.

Electricity and electromagnetism carry the heaviest share of those losses. Students learn a result rather than the reasoning that produces it, so a question phrased unfamiliarly or with changed geometry defeats somebody who can answer the standard version. Working several physically different situations until the method rather than the answer is what gets remembered is the only reliable fix, and it takes weeks rather than days.

The second place is arithmetic. Rearranging a formula when the unknown sits in a denominator or under a root, converting between prefixes at speed, and handling standard form reliably are all tested implicitly in nearly every calculation question. A student who is competent but slow loses marks to time rather than to error, which looks like not knowing the physics and is not.

Gradients deserve a line of their own because they recur in papers and in practical questions. Physics constantly asks for a gradient to be converted into a physical quantity, and a student who treats a gradient as a bare number rather than as a quantity with units loses marks in several places at once. Always stating what the gradient physically represents is a habit worth installing early.

03

Chemistry: notation is the grade

  • Unbalanced equations and missing state symbols are mechanical losses
  • Mole-calculation speed protects time for the rest of the paper
  • Electrolysis follows a learnable pattern: ions, discharge, half-equations
  • Qualitative analysis marks are predictable and routinely unclaimed

Chemistry at IGCSE is unusually responsive to tutoring, because so many of its losses are mechanical rather than conceptual. An unbalanced equation is wrong whatever the student understands. State symbols omitted where the mark scheme required them cost a mark each time. A concentration quoted without units, or significant figures carried inconsistently, costs marks that the chemistry had already earned.

Moles work runs through everything and speed matters as much as accuracy. A student who is slow at mole calculations loses marks in stoichiometry, titrations, yields and rates, and loses time that the rest of the paper needed. Short daily sets, timed, are the repair, and they work faster than any amount of re-explanation because the problem is fluency rather than comprehension.

Electrolysis and qualitative analysis are the two topics where available marks go unclaimed most often. Electrolysis questions follow patterns that can be learned: identify the ions present, decide what is discharged at each electrode and why, then write the half-equations. Qualitative analysis tests are close to a memorisation task with a predictable mark allocation, and students who treat them as such collect marks others leave behind.

Organic chemistry at IGCSE is narrower than at Diploma level but the same error appears: reactions memorised as pairs of starting material and product rather than understood as types. Grouping by reaction type and practising under time is the approach that survives an unfamiliar question, and it is worth doing before the final term rather than during it.

04

Biology: terminology, sequence and the data question

  • Key processes are sequences with required terms, not stories
  • Command-term misreading costs more in biology than in physics or chemistry
  • Axes, units and scale come before any biology on a data question
  • Vague answers are a writing problem rather than a knowledge problem

Biology is often described as the easiest of the three and is the one where the most marks are lost to writing. Its long-answer questions reward sequence and precision: an answer about transport that never mentions water potential, or about respiration that never names the products, loses marks regardless of how well the student understands the process.

The repair is to treat key processes as sequences with required terms rather than as stories. Each process has a small set of words the mark scheme expects, in an order that makes the biology follow. Students who write out those sequences until they are automatic stop producing vague answers, and this is one of the few places where learning a form of words is legitimate and effective rather than a shortcut.

Command-term reading costs more in biology than in the other two sciences, because its questions are more often verbal. Describe, explain, suggest, compare and evaluate each oblige something different, and a strong answer written against the wrong command term earns a fraction of what it should. Covering the question stems and asking the student to state only what each term obliges is a fortnight's work that lifts every biology paper.

Data questions are the third area and they reward a mechanical discipline. Read the axes, the units and the scale before applying any biology. Students who apply the content to a misread figure produce confident wrong answers, and this is the single most common way a capable biology student loses easy marks.

05

Practical and method questions, rule by rule

This is the highest-value section on the page, because practical questions appear in every science paper in all three subjects and almost nobody is taught them directly. They are not a test of laboratory instinct. They are a test of whether a student knows a short set of rules, and the rules can be learned on a screen in a fortnight.

A method must be repeatable by a stranger. That means quantities stated, the independent variable and its range given, the dependent variable and how it is measured named, and the controls specified with a means of control rather than just a label. Students routinely list apparatus instead of describing a procedure, which earns almost nothing.

Tables and graphs carry their own conventions. Units belong in the table heading rather than beside each value. The independent variable goes in the first column. A graph needs a sensible scale using most of the grid, the dependent variable on the vertical axis, plotted points marked clearly and a line of best fit rather than dot-to-dot. Each of those is worth marks and each is a rule.

Finally, the vocabulary. Accuracy, precision, reliability, resolution, anomaly and systematic error are distinct terms with distinct meanings, and questions ask about them specifically. A student who uses accurate to mean all of them loses marks in every one of the three sciences. Learning the five or six definitions properly is an evening's work with a return across the whole set of papers.

The mathematics inside all three sciences

A significant share of science failure is mathematical, and treating it as science wastes a term. The pattern is consistent: a student understands the concept, cannot execute the manipulation under time, and concludes they are bad at the subject. In a marked script the errors cluster around the algebra rather than around the ideas, which makes the diagnosis straightforward once somebody looks.

The diagnostic test is simple enough for a parent to run. Take a question the student lost marks on, remove the science, and ask them to do the algebra alone. If it fails in isolation, the problem is mathematical and the hour belongs to manipulation practice rather than to another pass through the topic. If it succeeds, the problem is in the reasoning or the writing, and the hour belongs elsewhere.

The specific skills are few and recur constantly. Rearrangement, especially with the unknown in a denominator or under a root. Standard form and prefix conversion at speed. Proportional reasoning, which carries most of chemistry's calculation work. Gradients converted into quantities with units. Significant figures and units carried consistently to a final answer.

Because these are shared across physics and chemistry, repairing them is the most efficient single intervention in a three-science timetable. Twenty minutes a week of pure manipulation using science formulas, kept deliberately separate from any science reasoning so only one skill is tested at a time, moves marks in two subjects at once and sometimes in the mathematics paper as well.

Core and Extended: what the content difference actually is

  • The entry caps the grade; Core cannot reach the top of the scale
  • Extended additions need teaching, while the shared core often needs only repair
  • Ask the department which tier, what evidence, and the last amendment date
  • For a combined award, use that route's own past papers, not separate-science ones

Where a science subject is tiered, the difference between the tiers is content coverage rather than question style, and the entry caps the available grade. Core covers a narrower syllabus and reaches the middle of the grade scale; Extended covers the fuller syllabus and reaches the top. A student entered for Core cannot earn a top grade however well they perform, because the paper does not contain the questions that earn more.

The content that Extended adds is not evenly difficult. In chemistry it includes the harder mole and electrolysis work and more organic detail. In physics it extends electromagnetism and the quantitative treatment of several topics. In biology it adds biochemical and physiological detail that Core treats descriptively. Knowing which of those a student is actually struggling with changes the plan, because the Extended additions need teaching while the shared core often needs only repair.

The decision is usually made by the school late in Year 10 on the evidence available then, and it is contestable with work and with timing. A student aiming at an A Level or Higher Level Diploma science needs the higher tier, and the work that secures the placement is harder topics met early rather than revision done late. Asking the department which tier, what evidence would change it and the last amendment date turns the worry into a plan.

For a combined or coordinated award the equivalent question is which route the school runs, because the paper pattern and the depth expected are specific to it, and practising separate-science papers for a combined award is practising the wrong material.

08

Remraam, South View School and the board question

  • A short run home makes an early-evening timed section realistic here
  • Ask for subject, board, code and tier in writing, per science
  • Cambridge and Pearson papers are not interchangeable practice material
  • Select a tutor on which papers they have marked, not on distance

Remraam is unusually well placed in this belt for secondary access. South View School sits close to the community and takes students through Year 11, so the run home is short and an early-evening session with an alert student is a realistic option rather than a theoretical one. For science, where a timed section needs concentration, that matters more than it does for most subjects.

The board question is the one to settle before anything else. Schools in this corridor do not all use one board across a timetable, and some run Cambridge for one science and Pearson Edexcel for another, which means a single answer for the whole student is often wrong. Ask for a written list: subject, board, code, tier. Then check the code printed on any past paper the student has been given against that list.

This matters because the papers are not interchangeable. Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1 cover overlapping physics with different question styles, different scaffolding and different conventions about how much working must be shown. Eight weeks spent on the other board's papers teaches a student to expect questions that will not appear, and it is the most common avoidable error in self-directed science revision in this city.

The local tutor pool is broad rather than deep. The people advertising along this corridor, based around Dubai Investment Park, Dubai Sports City and Motor City, generally cover all three sciences at IGCSE level, which is a sensible model and a reason to select on which papers somebody has marked rather than on how close they live.

09

Costs, permits and what a tutor may not do

  • Buy the practical-question fortnight before any single-subject block
  • Qualified online band: AED 150 to 300 an hour (Unitors IGCSE from 150)
  • In-home band: AED 180 to 500, travel inside the quote
  • MoHRE private tuition permit: free, two years, two working days to issue
  • Official board material is referenced and linked, never redistributed

Three sciences do not have to cost three times one subject. Buying the practical-question fortnight first, then one science weekly where the marked work shows the largest recoverable loss, keeps the monthly figure in the same band as a single-subject arrangement for most of the year.

The published bands are checkable. Budget online and university-student tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour in Dubai, with EdFlik publishing AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Subject specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, and premium examiner-led provision reaches AED 650 at BartyED. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 with travel inside the price.

Monthly, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for a weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, with packages seen including AED 799 for eight online sessions. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that Dubai private school fees would not rise for 2026-27. These are market figures with their sources named, not IB Gram prices.

On the legal and academic boundaries: an individual giving private lessons needs the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years, with MoHRE's service listing showing no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published fine schedule. Where a centre runs assessed work it must be the student's own, so a tutor explains criteria, critiques an approach and marks the student's own draft and never writes or completes it. Board material is linked rather than circulated.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get board, code and tier per science

Ask the school for a written list. Schools in this corridor sometimes split boards by subject, and the papers are not interchangeable, so this one message determines whether every subsequent hour of practice is aimed correctly.

  2. 02

Send one marked script per science

Three scripts read together show whether the same failure runs through all three subjects, which makes one fix efficient, or whether each has its own characteristic loss. Grades alone cannot distinguish those cases.

  3. 03

    Start with practical questions

Because their rules are shared across all three sciences, a fortnight here lifts physics, chemistry and biology at once. It is the cheapest useful block available and almost nobody has been taught it directly.

  4. 04

Free trial lesson, then one science

A trial over live video at no cost and before payment. After the practical fortnight, take the single science where the marked work shows the largest recoverable loss rather than splitting an hour three ways.

  5. 05

    Use the short run home

With South View School close by, an early-evening slot with an alert student is available in this community. Sessions sit on Gulf Standard Time and can move within the evening or after Iftar during Ramadan at no cost.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Each science is treated as its own problem

Physics loses marks to missing causal links and arithmetic, chemistry to notation, biology to terminology and sequence. Those are three different repairs, and general science revision addresses none of them specifically.

Practical questions are taught as rules

A repeatable method, units in table headings, a stated means of control, a line of best fit, and the correct use of accuracy and precision are rules rather than laboratory instincts. They appear in every paper and are drillable on a screen.

Shared maths is repaired once

Rearrangement, standard form, proportional reasoning and gradients carry marks in physics and chemistry simultaneously. Twenty minutes a week with the science stripped out moves marks in two subjects, which no topic revision can match.

Board and code come before teaching

Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1 train different habits about shown working and question style. Practising the wrong board is the most common avoidable error in self-directed science revision in this city and it is free to prevent.

Sequencing keeps the cost in one band

The practical fortnight first, then one science at a time, means the monthly figure stays comparable to a single-subject arrangement for most of the year. Three weekly hours cost three times as much and leave no practice time.

The laboratory limit is stated outright

Online lessons cannot run an experiment, and the practical belongs to the school. What a session teaches is everything the paper asks about practical work, which is where those marks actually are.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Remraam: your questions answered

Which science should a Remraam family fix first?+

Neither a subject nor a topic, but the practical and method questions, because their rules are shared across physics, chemistry and biology and appear in every paper. A fortnight on repeatable methods, table and graph conventions, stated means of control and the correct use of accuracy and precision lifts all three subjects at once. After that, take the single science where the marked scripts show the largest recoverable loss. Splitting one hour across three sciences produces three sets of homework and no practice time.

Why does our son lose marks in physics when he understands it?+

Two reasons usually, and a marked paper separates them. The first is explanation: a question asking why something happens receives a description of what happens, so the recall marks arrive and the explanation marks do not. The rule that fixes it is that every sentence in an explanation contains a because, and the answer carries as many creditable statements as the question has marks. The second is arithmetic under time: rearrangement with the unknown in a denominator, slow prefix conversion, standard form handled hesitantly.

What are the cheapest marks to recover in IGCSE chemistry?+

Notation, by a wide margin. Equations balanced, state symbols included where the scheme requires them, concentrations given with units and significant figures carried consistently are each worth a mark and each is mechanical. After those, qualitative analysis questions are close to a predictable memorisation task and are routinely left unclaimed, and electrolysis follows a learnable pattern: identify the ions, decide what is discharged at each electrode and why, write the half-equations. None of that requires new understanding.

Our daughter writes long biology answers and still scores poorly. Why?+

Almost always imprecision and order rather than length. Long-answer biology rewards a sequence containing the terms the mark scheme expects: transport explained without mentioning water potential, or respiration without naming the products, loses marks whatever she understands. Treating each key process as a sequence with required terms, written out until automatic, fixes it. The second cause is command-term misreading, which costs more in biology than elsewhere because its questions are more verbal, and that responds to a fortnight of drilling.

How are practical skills examined if lessons happen online?+

The experiment belongs to the school; the paper tests rules that can be drilled anywhere. A method must be repeatable by a stranger, with quantities, range, measurement and controls stated rather than apparatus listed. Units belong in table headings. Graphs need a sensible scale using most of the grid, the dependent variable on the vertical axis and a line of best fit. Anomalies are marked and explained rather than deleted. Confirm with the school which practical-style paper the student sits, since it changes the final weeks.

Do accuracy and precision actually get examined separately?+

Yes, and conflating them loses marks in all three sciences. Accuracy is closeness to the true value; precision is the spread of repeated measurements; resolution is the smallest change an instrument can detect; reliability concerns repeatability; a systematic error shifts every reading in the same direction. Questions ask about these specifically, and a student who uses accurate for all of them cannot answer correctly. Learning five or six definitions properly is an evening's work with a return across every science paper the student sits.

Is weak maths really behind science underperformance?+

Very often, and the test is quick. Take a question the student lost marks on, remove the science and ask for the algebra alone. If it fails in isolation, the hour belongs to manipulation practice rather than to another pass through the topic. The specific skills are few: rearrangement, standard form and prefixes at speed, proportional reasoning, gradients converted to quantities with units, and consistent significant figures. Because they are shared, repairing them moves marks in physics and chemistry simultaneously.

Do the sciences at South View School use the same exam board?+

Ask the school, per subject, because a single answer for the whole student is often wrong in this corridor. Schools here sometimes run Cambridge for one science and Pearson Edexcel for another. Request a written list of subject, board, code and tier, then check the code printed on any past paper against it. Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1 cover overlapping physics with different question styles and conventions about shown working, so practice from the wrong board teaches the wrong habits.

What does Extended actually add over Core in the sciences?+

Content coverage rather than a harder style of question, plus access to the top of the grade scale. In chemistry the additions include harder mole and electrolysis work and more organic detail; in physics, extended electromagnetism and more quantitative treatment; in biology, biochemical and physiological detail that Core treats descriptively. The distinction matters for planning, because the Extended additions need teaching while the shared core often needs only repair. A Core entry caps the grade however well the student performs.

Should the same tutor cover physics, chemistry and biology here?+

At IGCSE level, often yes, and there are real advantages: shared calculation technique, shared graph and data skills, the practical-question rules taught once, and one review conversation instead of three. The question to ask is which papers they have marked in each subject rather than whether they can cover all three. Where the sciences sit with different boards, confirm they are comfortable with both sets of conventions. If one subject is a stretch, two tutors is better and costs the same per hour.

Which practice papers should a combined-award student use?+

The ones from the combined or coordinated route specifically, not separate-science papers. The paper pattern and the depth expected are its own, and a combined award spreads content from all three sciences across fewer questions, so each question carries proportionally more of the grade. Using separate-science papers trains for a depth the student will not face and a structure that does not match. Ask the school which award route it runs and get the exact code, then take past papers from that code only.

How many sessions a week do three sciences need?+

One or two, not three. The limiting factor is the student's own practice time between sessions, and three weekly hours leave none of it, which is how families end up paying more and seeing less. The efficient sequence is the practical-question fortnight first, then a single science weekly where the marked work shows the largest recoverable loss, picking up the others later. School holidays are the exception, where three or four sessions in a week is realistic because nothing competes.

Is an early-evening session better than a later one?+

For science, usually yes, and Remraam is one of the few communities in this belt where it is practical. With South View School close by, a student can be home soon after four and work a timed section while still alert, which matters because science questions reward concentration and reading carefully. A session at half past eight after a long journey produces less from the same hour. Because nobody is travelling to Al Thamam or Al Ramth, the slot can also move within the evening at no cost.

What does three-science support cost at market rates?+

Less than three times one subject, if sequenced. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150, and Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly hour run AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle band and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Buying the practical fortnight and then one science at a time keeps the monthly figure in a single-subject band for most of the year. These are published market figures, not IB Gram prices.

Start with the rules that apply to all three

Get the board, code and tier for each science in writing, send one marked script per subject, and start with the practical and method questions, because their rules are shared and they appear in every paper. A free trial lesson over live video is arranged before any payment is taken, and the plan that comes back will name one science to take next rather than proposing three weekly hours. Lessons are online on Gulf Standard Time; the laboratory stays with the school, and home visits are a service IB Gram runs in India only.
