IGCSE Science Tutor in Emirates Hills

Before you hire an IGCSE science tutor in Emirates Hills, find out what your child is actually entered for. Three separate sciences, Coordinated Sciences as a double award, or Combined Science as a single grade are three different courses with different papers, different grade ceilings and different practical components. This page sets out each one by syllabus code, names where the marks go, and explains the Paper 5 or Paper 6 decision most families never hear about. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Emirates Hills

Three sciences, or two grades, or one: find out which before anything else

Parents in this part of Dubai routinely say that their child is doing IGCSE science and assume that means the same thing everywhere. It does not. A Year 11 sitting Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625 is taking three full IGCSEs and will sit nine papers. A Year 11 on Coordinated Sciences 0654 is taking one course awarded as two IGCSE grades, with six papers. A Year 11 on Combined Science 0653 is taking one course awarded as a single grade. These are not harder and easier versions of one thing; they are different volumes of content examined differently.

Getting this wrong wastes money in a predictable way. A family buys a biology tutor for a child on Coordinated Sciences and the tutor teaches the separate 0610 syllabus, which goes further than the course requires in some areas and does not cover the integration the actual papers demand. Another family hires three tutors for a child who needed one, because nobody asked whether the sciences were separate. The entry form answers it in a line, and the school exams officer will tell you if you ask.

The second thing to establish is the tier. Cambridge splits most of these syllabuses into Core and Extended, with different papers and different grade ranges. Core candidates sit Paper 1 and Paper 3; Extended candidates sit Paper 2 and Paper 4. Both sit either Paper 5, a laboratory practical test, or Paper 6, an alternative-to-practical written paper, and that choice belongs to the school, not the student. The grade ceiling differs between the tiers, so a tier decision made in Year 10 shapes what is available at the end of Year 11.

The third thing, and the one almost nobody prepares for, is the practical component. It carries a fifth of the grade on the separate sciences and it is examined as a skill rather than as knowledge. Writing a method a stranger could repeat, tabulating results with consistent significant figures, plotting a graph with a sensible scale, reading a gradient as a quantity with units, and suggesting one specific improvement are all learnable in a handful of sessions. They are also the marks most commonly left on the table, because school revision tends to be content-led.

Lessons from IB Gram are delivered one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time around the school run in Emirates Hills, The Springs and The Meadows. IB Gram does not run a UAE office and does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are offered in India only. Everything below is the science: the routes by syllabus code, the tiering decision, the practical papers, where marks are lost in each subject, how Pearson differs, and what three sciences actually cost in this market.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Science requests from the Emirates Hills cluster arrive at four points, and each needs a different kind of help. Lower secondary needs foundations; Year 10 needs a tiering decision; Year 11 needs papers; post-16 needs a bridge.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson International GCSE sciences

Two years ending in terminal examinations. The decisions that cap the grade are taken at the start: which route, which tier, and which practical paper. Cambridge offers separate sciences, Coordinated Sciences as a double award, Combined Science as a single award and Physical Science; Pearson offers separate single-tier sciences and a Science Double Award. Content volume between the extremes differs by a factor of roughly three.

UK-curriculum schools account for 37 per cent of private enrolment in Dubai, and the British secondary inside Springs 3 together with the schools serving Emirates Hills and The Meadows covers both boards. Ask the exams officer for the syllabus codes and the paper numbers rather than relying on what the subject is called on the timetable.

CHECKPOINTAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary science

The three years in which the Core or Extended decision is effectively made. Checkpoint tests sit in March, May and October and report against a published scale rather than a grade. The two predictors that matter for IGCSE science are comfort with rearranging a formula and the ability to write a cause-and-effect sentence that survives a marker's scrutiny.

Families arriving mid-year into this cluster from a different curriculum often find their child placed by age rather than by attainment. Two terms of work on scientific writing and on graph interpretation usually puts an Extended tier back within reach, and that conversation is far cheaper in Year 9 than in Year 11.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

International AS and A Level sciences

The post-16 destination for most science students in this catchment. The step up from IGCSE Extended is felt within weeks, and it is felt in mathematical handling rather than in content. A student who scored well through recall at IGCSE and never had to rearrange an equation under pressure meets that limitation in the first term of Year 12.

For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, the published rule requires five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, plus one A Level at no less than E or two AS Levels at the same grade. Sciences count towards the five; Arabic and Islamic education do not. Verify the current wording on moe.gov.ae.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme sciences

The alternative route, available at several IB World Schools within a short drive. Students moving from IGCSE sciences into DP meet a single independent investigation worth a fifth of the grade and a demand for extended written explanation that IGCSE never made. The content overlap is substantial; the assessment overlap is not.

Because the IB schools in Emirates Hills and The Meadows and the British secondary in Springs 3 sit in one residential cluster, a family can switch sector at sixteen without moving house. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places in the emirate.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each entry below is a specification, not a subject. The code is what determines which past papers are worth sitting and which topics are genuinely on the course.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610

Core and Extended

Content-heavy and marked on precision of language. Osmosis, transport in plants, the control of blood glucose and inheritance are the recurring losses, and the examiner wants named structures and a stated direction of movement rather than a general description of what happens.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core and Extended

Moles work, the reactivity series, electrolysis and organic nomenclature. Extended candidates lose most on limiting-reagent calculations and on explanations that describe an observation without naming the particles responsible. State symbols and balanced equations are cheap marks that vanish under time pressure.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625

Core and Extended

Electricity and the practical component account for the bulk of lost marks. Circuit questions punish students who have memorised formulae without understanding what is in series and what is in parallel, and Paper 5 punishes anyone who has never written a method for a stranger to follow.

Cambridge IGCSE Coordinated Sciences 0654

Double award, Core and Extended

Three sciences compressed into two IGCSE grades, with six papers. Content per science is lighter than the separate specifications, but the papers switch discipline without warning, so students who revise biology, chemistry and physics in isolation are caught by the switching rather than by the difficulty.

Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653

Single award, Core and Extended

One grade covering all three sciences, chosen where a student needs breadth without the volume. The risk is post-16: some sixth forms and some university courses prefer or require separate sciences, so check the destination requirement before this route is selected rather than after results.

Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652

Core and Extended

Chemistry and physics without biology, awarded as one IGCSE. A sensible route for a student heading towards engineering who wants to drop biology, and a route worth confirming against the destination sixth form's own entry requirements first.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1

Single tier

Two written papers with no separate practical examination, so experimental skills are assessed inside the theory papers. Students transferring from a Cambridge school mid-course need the differences in required practicals pointed out in the first session rather than discovered in a mock.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry 4CH1

Single tier

Two written papers across principles, inorganic, physical and organic chemistry. The organic section reaches slightly further than its Cambridge counterpart, and quantitative questions reward candidates who lay moles work out visibly rather than performing it on a calculator.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics 4PH1

Single tier

A longer first paper and a shorter second, with experimental skills examined in writing. The formula sheet differs from Cambridge's, which sounds trivial and is not: students revise what they expect to be given, and the expectation needs correcting early.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Science Double Award 4SD0

Single tier

Papers across all three sciences, awarded as two IGCSE grades. Useful where a timetable cannot accommodate three separate sciences. As with Cambridge's coordinated route, check how the destination sixth form treats a double award before committing to it.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended

Included here because science grades depend on it. A physics candidate who cannot rearrange an equation reliably is losing physics marks to algebra, and the fastest fix is often ten minutes of maths at the start of a physics session.

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606

Single tier

Taken alongside 0580 by students heading for A Level sciences. It introduces calculus and kinematics early, and students who sit it find the Year 12 physics transition markedly less abrupt than their classmates do.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns of work cover nearly every science request here. Which one fits depends on how many sciences are being sat and how many weeks are left.

One science a week, through the two years

A weekly session on the science that is weakest, following the school's own order of topics so the lesson repairs what was rushed rather than running ahead. For a student on three separate sciences this is normally the best value, because the strongest two look after themselves once study habits are working.

  • A held Gulf Standard Time slot through the term
  • Topics sequenced to the school's scheme rather than to a generic plan
  • Written questions set weekly and marked against the published scheme
  • A practical-skills question included every fortnight so the technique stays warm

Rotating cover for all three sciences

One session a week that rotates between biology, chemistry and physics according to what is due and what is weakest. It suits a Year 11 on three separate sciences with a diffuse problem rather than one bad subject, and it depends on a tutor who is genuinely confident across all three at this level.

  • A rolling plan reviewed every three weeks against marked work
  • Shared skills taught once: graphs, units, significant figures, command words
  • Separate attention to the one science that is actually failing
  • Coordinated or combined routes taught as one integrated course, not three

Practical and alternative-to-practical clinics

Short blocks aimed squarely at Paper 5 or Paper 6, which carry a fifth of the grade on the separate sciences and receive a fraction of the revision time. These are techniques rather than knowledge, which is exactly why a small number of focused sessions moves the mark.

  • Writing a method another person could follow without asking a question
  • Results tables with consistent significant figures and stated units
  • Graph scales, best-fit lines and reading a gradient as a quantity
  • One specific, prioritised improvement rather than a list of apologies

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Emirates Hills

01

What IGCSE science means on your child's entry, route by route

Start with the document rather than the conversation. The entry form, or the exams officer's list, names a syllabus code and a set of paper numbers for each subject. Those two pieces of information tell a tutor more than an hour of discussion about how the child is finding science. Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625 means three separate IGCSEs and nine papers in total. 0654 means Coordinated Sciences, one course awarded as two grades, with six papers. 0653 means Combined Science, one course and one grade. 0652 is Physical Science, chemistry and physics without biology.

The volume difference is the thing families underestimate. Three separate sciences is roughly three times the content of Combined Science and considerably more than Coordinated Sciences, spread across three times as many papers. That matters for revision planning far more than for difficulty: a student on three separate sciences in a Dubai school that also requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies has a genuinely crowded Year 11, and a revision plan that ignores the arithmetic will fail in February.

Route choice also has a tail. Some sixth forms and some university courses prefer or specify separate sciences, particularly for medicine and engineering pathways. Others accept coordinated or double-award routes without comment. The only reliable method is to read the destination's own published entry requirement before the route is chosen in Year 9 or Year 10, rather than discovering the preference after results day when the option has closed.

Pearson's structure differs enough to matter. Its separate sciences, 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, are single tier, so there is no Core and Extended decision, and experimental skills are assessed inside the written papers rather than in a dedicated practical paper. The Science Double Award 4SD0 covers all three sciences and is awarded as two grades. A student transferring between boards mid-course has changed what the examination asks them to do, not merely the order of the topics.

Core or Extended: the tier decision and what it does to the ceiling

On Cambridge science syllabuses, Core and Extended are not difficulty settings applied to the same paper. They are different papers. Core candidates sit Paper 1, a multiple-choice paper, and Paper 3, a theory paper. Extended candidates sit Paper 2 and Paper 4, which cover additional content at greater depth. Both sit a practical or alternative-to-practical paper. The grade range differs between the two tiers, so the decision taken in Year 10 sets the best outcome available at the end of Year 11.

The decision usually rests with the school, informed by Year 9 and Year 10 performance, and schools make it carefully. Where it goes wrong is in the margins. A student placed on Core because of a weak Year 9 who then improves substantially may be capped below what they could reach, and the window to move tier is narrow because Cambridge final entries close months before the exams. An Emirates Hills candidate sits the June series or the November series, and for June the entry closes in the spring, a good four months ahead of the first paper, with the exact day printed on the school's statement of entry. Work that backwards and the tier conversation belongs in Year 10, or in the autumn term of Year 11 at the latest. A conversation in May about moving to Extended is a conversation that arrives after the door has shut.

This is the single most useful thing a tutor can contribute in Year 10, and almost nobody asks for it then. A specialist sitting one Extended past paper with a student can give a reasonably honest read on whether the tier fits. If the answer is that Extended is within reach with two terms of work, there is time to make the case to the school while the entry is still open. If the answer is that Core is the right place, the family stops worrying about a ceiling that was never the problem.

Tier also changes what revision should look like. An Extended candidate needs the additional content taught and then examined, with past questions filtered to the Extended papers only; Core past papers will mislead them about the depth expected. A Core candidate practising Extended papers wastes time on material that will not appear. Downloading the wrong tier's papers is one of the most common and least noticed revision errors in Year 11.

Paper 5 or Paper 6: the fifth of the grade nobody revises

On the Cambridge separate sciences, the practical component carries around a fifth of the total grade. Schools enter candidates for either Paper 5, a laboratory practical test, or Paper 6, an alternative-to-practical written paper. The choice is the centre's and depends largely on laboratory capacity. Both examine the same underlying skills, and both are examined in a way that content revision does not touch.

What the examiner is actually testing is procedural writing. Can the student describe a method precisely enough that a stranger could repeat it, including what is measured, how often and what is kept constant? Can they produce a results table with consistent significant figures and units in the headings rather than scattered through the cells? Can they choose a scale that uses the grid, plot accurately, draw a line of best fit that is a judgement rather than a join-the-dots, and read a gradient as a quantity with units? Can they identify one specific weakness in the method and propose a realistic improvement?

Those are five discrete skills and all five are trainable. A student who has never written a method for a stranger will write one that assumes the reader was in the room. A student who has never been told that an improvement must be specific will write that they would repeat the experiment more carefully, which earns nothing. Two or three focused sessions on these habits move marks reliably, which is a rare thing to be able to say in exam preparation.

One practical note on materials. Past papers, mark schemes and syllabus documents belong to Cambridge and are not reproduced or supplied by a tutor. They are referenced, and the work is done from what your child's school provides, which has the advantage of being the right version for the series being sat. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones with its own timetable version, so confirm the zone with the exams officer before building a plan around any published date.

Biology 0610: precision of language is the whole game

  • Name the structures: xylem, phloem, active site, alveoli, not generalities
  • State a direction of movement, not just that movement happens
  • Label genetic diagrams and include a key, every time
  • Check which Extended supplementary topics have actually been taught
  • Have written answers marked strictly for two weeks and the habit changes

Biology at IGCSE looks like the memorising subject and is marked like a writing subject. The content is large and mostly straightforward; the marks are awarded for stating things exactly. A student who writes that water moves into the cell has described the outcome. A student who writes that water moves from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane has answered the question. Both students understand osmosis. Only one scores.

The recurring losses are predictable across cohorts. Transport in plants is answered without naming xylem and phloem or without stating a direction. Enzyme questions describe the effect of temperature without mentioning the shape of the active site. Blood glucose control is explained with the hormones in the right order and the organs omitted. Inheritance questions are answered with a correct genetic diagram and no key, which costs a mark that was already earned in the student's head.

The repair is a vocabulary discipline rather than more reading. Each topic has perhaps a dozen words the mark scheme wants, and using them is a habit built by writing answers and having them marked strictly. Students find strict marking uncomfortable for about two weeks and then start writing differently, because the pattern becomes visible. This is the single clearest case in IGCSE science where marked written work beats any amount of revision guide highlighting.

Extended candidates have one additional trap: the supplementary content arrives late in Year 11 at many schools, so it is learnt once and never revisited. A tutor starting in January should establish immediately which supplementary topics have actually been taught, because the answer determines whether the plan is revision or teaching.

05

Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625: the two calculation bottlenecks

In chemistry, the bottleneck is moles. Students who can define a mole lose marks across whole papers because the procedure is loose: they round before the final line, drop units between steps, or divide before working out which reagent is limiting. The fix is mechanical. Write the balanced equation. Write what is known under each species. Convert everything to moles before doing anything else. Show the substitution line even when the arithmetic is easy. Round once, at the end. That procedure, applied for three weeks, changes the mark on every quantitative question on the paper.

Electrolysis and the reactivity series provide the other reliable chemistry losses, and both fail for the same reason: the answer describes what is seen rather than what the particles are doing. An explanation that mentions bubbles at the cathode has described an observation. An explanation that names the ion, says where it moves and what it gains or loses, has answered the question. Organic nomenclature is a smaller but entirely avoidable loss, since the naming rules are finite and can be learnt in one session.

In physics, the bottleneck is algebra, and it is frequently misdiagnosed as a physics problem. A student who cannot rearrange an equation confidently will lose physics marks on questions they conceptually understand. Ten minutes of rearrangement practice at the start of a physics session often does more for the grade than the fifty minutes that follow. Circuits are the second bottleneck: series and parallel behaviour has to be understood rather than recalled, because the examiner will combine them in a way the textbook diagram did not.

Both subjects reward showing working, and both punish the student who performs the calculation on a calculator and writes only the answer. Method marks exist precisely for the lines that a confident student thinks are beneath them. In an exam where a fifth of the grade comes from the practical paper and half from theory, the cheapest available marks are the ones awarded for writing down what you did.

06

What three sciences actually cost in this market

  • Start with one weekly session on the weakest science, not three tutors
  • Teach graphs, units and method writing once; the skills transfer across all three
  • Add a second session only when marked work shows two sciences failing
  • Rotating cover in one slot costs the same as one subject
  • Ask whether a quoted rate includes VAT and what the replacement terms are

The arithmetic is worth doing explicitly, because it is different for science than for a single subject. If a Year 11 is sitting three separate sciences and a family assumes a tutor for each, the monthly figure trebles immediately. Start from the cheapest workable plan rather than the most thorough one and add only what the evidence requires.

The cheapest workable plan is one weekly session on the weakest science, with the shared skills taught inside it. Graph work, significant figures, units, command words and method writing transfer across all three sciences, so an hour of practical-skills teaching in physics improves the biology and chemistry practical papers too. On published Dubai market estimates, one weekly hour with a qualified online subject tutor sits at roughly AED 600 to 1,200 a month, based on Bestimate's rate tables, with the hourly band at AED 150 to 300. Budget online tutoring is advertised from around AED 45 to 150 an hour, which Bestimate estimates at AED 240 to 600 a month for one session a week.

The next step up is rotating cover across all three sciences in one weekly slot, which costs the same as one subject and requires a tutor confident at IGCSE level in all three. Only after that does a second weekly session make sense, and only if marked work shows two sciences failing rather than one. An IGCSE specialist in an exam year is quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above by Bestimate, with TutorChase publishing AED 270; at two sessions a week that is AED 1,000 to 2,000 and more per month.

For comparison, published in-home one-to-one rates in Dubai run from AED 180 to 500 an hour, and monthly in-home packages of four two-hour sessions appear at AED 1,599 to 1,799, against an online package advertised at AED 799 a month for eight sessions. IB Gram does not sell in-home visits in the UAE, so that band is market context rather than an option here. All of these are rates published by named providers and read in October 2026; they are not a price list, so ask for a current quote and use the free first lesson before deciding anything.

07

Online lessons for a Year 11 with nine papers, and the permit question

A Year 11 on three separate sciences in a Dubai school has a crowded week before any tutoring is added. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit, advising that no mandatory lesson runs shorter than 25 minutes. Those hours are real. A tutoring plan that assumes a Year 11 evening is empty is a plan that will be abandoned by February.

That is the practical case for online delivery rather than a philosophical one. A session that needs no travel at either end can start at the hour the student is actually free, can be moved by thirty minutes when the school run runs late, and can be recorded for review during revision week. Screen-sharing a graph and annotating it live is as good as paper for this work, and better for anything the student will want to look at again. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are an India-only service and there is no UAE office.

One thing worth verifying about any tutor your family engages, online or otherwise. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Those offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so be cautious of any figure quoted to you.

A related point about asking your child's own science teacher for private lessons. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that also addresses serving students affiliated with the permit holder's school. Treat that as press-reported and check the current policy document, but do not assume the arrangement is straightforward.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Emirates Hills

Location changes two things for science tutoring: which school's laboratory and specification your child sits under, and the hour at which a session can actually begin. Each note below covers one or both.

Emirates Hills

Large villa plots and long internal roads, so the bus run dominates the afternoon. Science requests from here cluster in January, after the Year 11 mock results land and the practical paper mark becomes visible for the first time.

The Springs

A British-curriculum secondary sits inside Springs 3, which makes this the single largest source of IGCSE science enquiries in the cluster. Children often walk home, so a four o'clock session is genuinely available here.

The Meadows

Hosts an IB continuum school, so science work requested from this community is more often MYP preparation or a bridge into DP than IGCSE paper practice. The occasional IGCSE request is usually from a family that switched sector.

The Lakes

Frequently split across sectors within one household, with a Year 11 on 0654 and an older sibling on A Level or DP. Back-to-back sessions for two specifications are a common booking from these addresses.

The Greens

Apartments with short commutes and a school on the doorstep, so early slots are workable. The practical constraint is a quiet desk, which matters more than usual for the graph-plotting and tabulation work the practical papers require.

The Views

Most secondary students travel out towards Al Sufouh or Al Barsha, with door-to-door journeys of 35 to 45 minutes in evening traffic. Half past five is the realistic booking for a science session that needs concentration.

Al Sufouh

Several of the larger British-curriculum cohorts in this catchment are taught here, and laboratory provision is generally strong. A student entered for Paper 5 rather than Paper 6 is more likely to be at one of these campuses.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Along Sheikh Zayed Road from Emirates Hills and a frequent destination for families moving from villas to apartments. A Year 11 mid-course keeps the same tutor and the same slot through that move, which is the practical case for online lessons.

The Springs, Emirates Hills and The Meadows

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the syllabus codes from the entry

The one message that saves a week: the syllabus code and paper numbers for each science, the tier if Cambridge, and whether the centre has entered your child for the practical test or the alternative paper. The school's exams officer has all of it.

  2. 02

A free first lesson that reads the mock

The matched tutor works through the most recent marked science papers against the published scheme, separating content gaps from technique losses and practical-paper losses. You hear an honest read on what the remaining weeks can do, then decide whether to continue.

  3. 03

One science first, with shared skills inside it

The plan starts with the weakest science and teaches the transferable skills there: graphs, units, significant figures, method writing and command words. Those carry into the other two papers at no extra cost, which is why this is the first step rather than a third tutor.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions with marked written work

Lessons run one-to-one over live video on a held Gulf Standard Time slot, with notes afterwards and a question set for the week. The tutor marks that work strictly, because loosely marked practice teaches a student that a vague answer is acceptable.

  5. 05

A practical-skills block before the mock

Two or three sessions aimed only at Paper 5 or Paper 6 technique, because that component carries a fifth of the grade on the separate sciences and receives a fraction of the revision. It is the most reliably recoverable mark on the page.

  6. 06

A tier and route review in Year 10

If your child is still in Year 10, one session sitting an Extended past paper gives an honest read on whether the tier fits while the entry window is still open. That conversation is worth more in October than any amount of revision in February.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The code before the subject

0610, 0620 and 0625 is a different brief from 0654 or 0653, and 4BI1 is different again. Matching a tutor to the code rather than to the word science is the difference between teaching the course and teaching a neighbouring one.

The practical paper taken seriously

Paper 5 and Paper 6 carry roughly a fifth of a separate-science grade and are examined as procedural skills. They get dedicated sessions rather than a mention in the final week, because they are the most reliably recoverable marks available.

Tier fit tested against a real paper

Whether Core or Extended is right is answerable by sitting one Extended past paper, not by discussion. Doing that in Year 10, while the entry window is open, is worth more than months of general revision later.

Shared skills taught once

Graphs, units, significant figures, method writing and command words transfer across all three sciences. Teaching them inside the weakest subject improves the other two papers without a second or third tutor.

Board material referenced, never supplied

Past papers, mark schemes and syllabus documents belong to Cambridge and Pearson. A tutor references them and works from what the school provides, which is also the correct version for your child's series.

Rates with sources, delivery stated plainly

Every AED figure here names the provider that published it and the month it was read. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; there is no UAE office and no tutor visits a UAE address.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Emirates Hills: your questions answered

How do I find out whether my child is doing separate, coordinated or combined science?+

Ask the exams officer for the syllabus code on the entry. Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625 means three separate sciences and three IGCSE grades. 0654 is Coordinated Sciences, one course awarded as two grades. 0653 is Combined Science, one course and one grade. 0652 is Physical Science, chemistry and physics without biology. Pearson uses 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 for separate sciences and 4SD0 for the Science Double Award. The subject name on a school timetable frequently does not distinguish between these, and the difference in content volume is roughly threefold.

Is Coordinated Sciences 0654 easier than three separate sciences?+

It is less content rather than easier content, and it brings its own difficulty. The course covers all three sciences at reduced depth and is awarded as two IGCSE grades across six papers, so there is substantially less to learn than three separate specifications. The challenge is that questions move between biology, chemistry and physics without signalling it, so a student who revises the three in isolation gets caught by the switching. Tutoring for 0654 should treat it as one integrated course, which is why matching the tutor to the code matters more than matching to a single science.

What is the difference between Paper 5 and Paper 6 in Cambridge sciences?+

Paper 5 is a laboratory practical test sat under exam conditions; Paper 6 is an alternative-to-practical written paper examining the same thinking on paper. The school chooses which its candidates sit, largely on laboratory capacity, and the component carries roughly a fifth of the grade on the separate sciences. Both reward the same five skills: writing a repeatable method, tabulating results with consistent significant figures, plotting a sensible graph, reading a gradient as a quantity with units, and suggesting one specific improvement. Ask the exams officer which paper your child is entered for before buying revision material.

Can my child move from Core to Extended tier in Year 11?+

Only while the entry window is open, and it closes months before the exam. A Cambridge candidate in Dubai sits the June or the November series, and final entries for June are made in the spring, long before the first script -- ask the examinations officer for the precise day, because it is on the statement of entry rather than in any general guide. That is why a request made once the exam season has started arrives too late. If you suspect the tier is capping a capable student, the thing to do is sit one Extended past paper with a specialist and get an honest read, ideally in Year 10. If Extended looks reachable with two terms of work, there is time to make the case to the school while the decision is still live.

Why does my child lose biology marks when the answer looks right?+

Because IGCSE biology is marked on precision rather than on gist. Writing that water moves into the cell describes the outcome; writing that water moves from a higher to a lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane answers the question. The same pattern repeats across transport in plants, enzyme activity and blood glucose control, where the named structure or the direction of movement is the mark. Each topic has about a dozen words the scheme wants. Two weeks of strictly marked written answers changes how a student writes, which no amount of highlighting achieves.

What are the commonest IGCSE chemistry calculation mistakes?+

Rounding before the final line, dropping units between steps, and dividing before identifying the limiting reagent. All three produce a confident answer to a slightly different question. The procedure that fixes them is mechanical: write the balanced equation, write what is known under each species, convert everything to moles before doing anything else, show the substitution line even when the arithmetic is trivial, and round once at the end. Applied consistently for three weeks it changes the mark on every quantitative question on the paper, which is a large share of 0620 Paper 4.

My child understands physics but keeps getting numbers wrong. Why?+

Usually because the problem is algebra rather than physics, and it gets misdiagnosed. A student who cannot rearrange an equation reliably under time pressure will lose marks on questions they understand perfectly well. Ten minutes of rearrangement practice at the start of a physics session frequently does more for the grade than the fifty minutes that follow. The second common cause is circuits, where series and parallel behaviour has been memorised from a textbook diagram rather than understood, so a combined circuit in the exam looks unfamiliar when it is not.

Do I need three separate science tutors for a Year 11 on three sciences?+

Rarely, and it is the most expensive way to start. Begin with one weekly session on the weakest science and teach the transferable skills inside it: graph work, units, significant figures, method writing and command words all carry into the other two papers. Rotating cover across all three sciences in a single weekly slot costs the same as one subject and suits a diffuse problem. Add a second session only when marked work shows two sciences genuinely failing rather than one. Three tutors should be the conclusion of evidence, not the opening assumption.

Does the science route affect sixth form or university options?+

It can, and it is worth checking before the route is chosen rather than after results. Some sixth forms and some university courses prefer or specify separate sciences, particularly on medicine and engineering pathways, while others accept coordinated or double-award routes without comment. The only reliable method is to read the destination's own published entry requirement for the year of entry. No tutoring provider is the right authority on a named institution's requirement, and tutoring is not a requirement for any admissions or equivalency process.

Do the three science grades count towards the five subjects the UAE equivalency rule asks for?+

Sciences count towards the published requirement, which on the British track is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five. One ranking competitor states six IGCSE subjects are needed, which does not match the published rule. Verify the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with your emirate's attestation authority before relying on it.

Will a tutor give us Cambridge past papers and mark schemes?+

No, and an offer to hand over a library of board material should make you cautious about a provider. Past papers, mark schemes and syllabus documents belong to Cambridge and Pearson, and reproducing or distributing them is a copyright matter. A tutor references them and works from what your child's school supplies, which also has the practical advantage of being the correct version for the series being sat. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own timetable, so the school's copy is the authoritative one.

Does IB Gram send a science tutor to a house in The Springs or Emirates Hills?+

No. Lessons for UAE families are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists in India only, and there is no UAE office. For science specifically, online delivery has a practical advantage: a graph or a results table shared on screen and annotated live can be saved and reviewed in revision week, which a sheet of paper left behind on a dining table cannot. It also means the session can shift by half an hour when the school run runs late.

How much should a Dubai family budget for IGCSE science tutoring?+

Published market estimates, not our prices. Bestimate's Dubai tables put one weekly hour with a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 600 to 1,200 a month, with the hourly band at AED 150 to 300. Budget online tutoring is advertised from around AED 45 to 150 an hour, estimated at AED 240 to 600 a month for one session a week. An IGCSE specialist in an exam year is quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. Ask whether a quoted rate includes VAT and what the replacement terms are in writing.

How does a full Dubai timetable affect a science revision plan?+

It removes hours the plan assumed were free. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA calculating instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit and advising no mandatory lesson runs shorter than 25 minutes. A Year 11 sitting nine science papers therefore has a genuinely crowded week before tutoring is added. Count the usable weeks after mocks, the Eid period and family travel are subtracted, then decide how many sciences the plan can realistically target.

What if no tutor covers the science route my child is entered for?+

You are told before booking rather than afterwards. Cambridge and Pearson separate sciences at evening Gulf Standard Time slots are well covered. The combinations that occasionally are not include a specific coordinated or double-award route at an awkward hour, or a request arriving in the fortnight before a series. In that case you are offered the nearest available specialist and a slot that genuinely exists, or an honest no with a suggestion of what would help instead. No competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit at all.

Get the syllabus code, then get the tutor

One short email to your child's exams officer answers the questions that matter: which syllabus codes, which tier, which paper numbers, and whether the centre has entered them for the practical test or the alternative paper. Bring those answers and the most recent marked science papers to a free first lesson, and you will leave with a plan that targets the right tier and the right component rather than science in general. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time for families in Emirates Hills, The Springs, The Meadows, The Lakes, The Greens and The Views.
