IB Chemistry Tutor in Emirates Hills

A good IB chemistry tutor in Emirates Hills opens the first lesson with a past paper and a highlighter, not a motivational talk. This page is written from the syllabus out: the six content areas of the current guide, the command terms that decide whether a correct idea earns the mark, the three calculation types that quietly bleed grades, and the eight-week past-paper programme that fixes them. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, scheduled around the Emirates Hills school run.

IB & IGCSE in Emirates Hills

Chemistry marks are lost in specific places, and they can be named

There is a version of tutoring that consists of going over the topic again more slowly. It rarely changes a chemistry grade, because the problem is usually not that the student does not know the chemistry. The problem is that a correct idea arrives on the page in a form the mark scheme cannot reward. A student writes that the reaction gets faster; the examiner wanted the frequency of successful collisions. A student calculates the right number; the method mark went to the line of working they skipped.

That is why this page is built from the syllabus rather than from the neighbourhood. The current guide organises chemistry into six areas: Structure 1, models of the particulate nature of matter; Structure 2, models of bonding and structure; Structure 3, classification of matter; Reactivity 1, what drives chemical reactions; Reactivity 2, how much, how fast and how far; and Reactivity 3, what the mechanisms of chemical change are. Every mark your child will earn or lose sits inside one of those six, and a tutor who can say which one is the one worth paying for.

The assessment shape matters as much as the content. There are two written papers and one internal investigation. Paper 1 carries 36 per cent and splits into a multiple-choice section and a set of data-based and experimental questions. Paper 2 carries 44 per cent and is extended response. The investigation carries 20 per cent. Standard Level sits an hour and a half for each paper; Higher Level sits two hours for Paper 1 and two and a half for Paper 2. A data booklet is supplied, so recall of constants is not the skill being tested.

Students in this part of Dubai arrive at chemistry from two directions. Those who came up through the IB continuum schools in Emirates Hills and The Meadows have been assessed against criteria since they were eleven and are usually comfortable writing an explanation. Those who transferred in after Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 know more content than they think and have never been asked to sustain a two-page answer. Both need the same thing in the end, but not in the same order, which is the first question a tutor should ask.

Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not operate a UAE office and does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are available only in India. What follows is the subject: the content map, the command-term traps, the three calculation areas that cost the most, the HL mechanisms, a worked eight-week past-paper programme, the investigation errors specific to chemistry, and what the Dubai market charges for this kind of help with the sources named.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry requests from this cluster arrive at four stages, and the content of a lesson is completely different at each. These are the four, with what the schools around Emirates Hills actually run.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme Chemistry

Both levels share the six content areas and diverge in depth and in additional HL material, most visibly in Reactivity 3 where organic mechanisms and electron-pair sharing go considerably further. The experimental programme is 40 hours at SL and 60 at HL. Students who find the course hard are rarely stuck on the chemistry; they are stuck on expressing a mechanism in the language the mark scheme recognises.

The IB World Schools serving this part of Dubai run DP Chemistry at both levels, and HL cohorts are often small. That is excellent for discussion and unforgiving when a student misses a fortnight, because there is no parallel set to catch up with. It is the most common trigger for a first tutoring enquiry from Emirates Hills.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme Sciences

Chemistry sits inside integrated Sciences and is assessed against four criteria marked out of eight: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The criterion that predicts DP chemistry performance best is processing and evaluating, because it is where uncertainty and data treatment are first demanded in writing.

The continuum schools inside this residential cluster feed MYP directly into DP, so the MYP 5 science grade is a usable early signal on whether HL Chemistry is sensible. Students joining mid-MYP from a British-curriculum school usually need criterion work rather than content teaching for a term.

BRIDGEAges 15-16 · Year 11 into DP1

IGCSE 0620 or 4CH1 into DP Chemistry

The transition request that comes up most. A student finishing Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 meets three new demands: quantitative work carried through several steps without intermediate rounding, thermodynamic reasoning with sign conventions that matter, and extended explanation of mechanism. The content is familiar; the expected answer length is not.

Because the British-curriculum secondary inside Springs 3 and the IB schools in Emirates Hills and The Meadows sit in the same gated cluster, families switching sector at sixteen often do not move house. Plan that transition in the spring term of Year 11, when a summer block can still close the gap before DP1 begins.

RETAKEAges 18+ · Post-results

DP Chemistry retake preparation

A retake candidate carries forward a marked investigation and needs almost nothing but paper technique. The work is narrow and measurable: the question types that cost marks last time, the content areas where recall failed under pressure, and the timing pattern that left Paper 2 incomplete. Intensive short blocks genuinely suit this case.

Dubai schools predominantly enter candidates for the May session, so a retake plan usually starts in July and runs to the following spring. Ask the school which sessions it offers rather than assuming, and verify any session date with the IB coordinator or on ibo.org before building a plan around it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry is almost never the only thing being tutored in a household here. These are the combinations that actually appear, with what each pairing does to the week.

IB Chemistry HL

Higher Level

Six content areas with substantial additional material, a two-hour Paper 1 and a two-and-a-half-hour Paper 2. The additional work in electron-pair sharing reactions and in energy cycles is where HL candidates separate, and where students who learnt mechanisms as pictures rather than as electron movements come unstuck.

IB Chemistry SL

Standard Level

The same six areas at lower depth with an hour-and-a-half paper at each sitting. SL candidates lose most in the quantitative sections of Reactivity 2, because moles work at this level is examined through multi-step questions where one rounding error propagates to the final answer.

IB Biology

HL and SL

The commonest partner subject in this cluster, especially among students aiming at medicine. The shared gain is data handling, and the shared risk is that both subjects demand precise causal language and students carry loose phrasing from one into the other.

IB Physics

HL and SL

Shares the assessment architecture exactly, so investigation technique learnt once transfers. The pairing is heavy on mathematics, and students taking both HL benefit from sessions sequenced so that uncertainty work happens in one subject and is applied in the other.

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The pairing that makes HL Chemistry calculations feel routine. Logarithms arriving before the maths course has formalised them is the usual DP1 friction point, and ten minutes of algebra at the start of a chemistry session often saves the whole hour.

IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Entirely workable with chemistry, with one caveat. Students aiming at medicine, pharmacy or chemical engineering should read the named university's own stated prerequisite for the year of entry before settling the maths route in DP1.

IB Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

Taken alongside chemistry by a number of students here and sharing much of its biochemistry vocabulary. Tutoring on data presentation and on justifying a conclusion from measured values pays into both subjects at once.

IB Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

Chosen by students who want a science without a second heavy quantitative load. It overlaps with chemistry in acid deposition, atmospheric systems and water quality, and the overlap is worth exploiting deliberately rather than by accident.

IB Extended Essay in Chemistry

DP core

A frequent request from this cluster and a demanding choice. The practical constraint is usually laboratory access, which is why essays that rely on a database or on secondary data often score better than ambitious bench work that cannot be controlled at school.

MYP Sciences

MYP 4-5

The two years that decide whether HL Chemistry is realistic. The criterion worth watching is processing and evaluating, because it is where a student first has to defend a number rather than report it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three working patterns cover nearly every chemistry request from this cluster, and the right one is decided by the calendar rather than by preference.

Weekly teaching alongside the school's scheme

One session a week that follows the order the school is teaching in, consolidating what has just been covered and repairing what was rushed. Across two years this is what moves a chemistry grade, because every content area gets a second pass with marked written work in between rather than a single exposure.

  • A held Gulf Standard Time slot through the term
  • Content sequenced to the school's own order, not a generic plan
  • Written questions set between lessons and marked against the published scheme
  • A calculation set every fortnight so quantitative fluency never lapses

Past-paper programmes by content area

A block of work in which past questions are filtered to one content area and sat in sequence across several series. Students who have only ever sat whole papers are startled by how quickly a pattern emerges when they do ten Reactivity 2 questions in a row and see the same three traps repeat.

  • Questions filtered to one area, drawn from multiple series
  • Marked against the published scheme, with losses grouped by cause
  • Command terms logged, so the student sees which verbs cost them marks
  • Board material referenced on its own site rather than reproduced

Investigation and Extended Essay feedback

Short blocks around the student's own chemistry investigation or essay. The tutor challenges the research question before data is collected, explains what each criterion rewards, and responds to the student's own draft. The write-up stays entirely the student's work from start to finish.

  • Research question tested for control and measurability at the design stage
  • Volumetric and gravimetric uncertainty checked before the data is final
  • Conclusion compared against accepted values and literature
  • Feedback on the student's draft only; the tutor contributes no text

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Emirates Hills

01

What an IB chemistry tutor in Emirates Hills does in the first three lessons

  • Bring the most recent marked paper and the school's mark breakdown, not the report card
  • Expect losses to be grouped by cause, not reported as a percentage
  • Command-term errors are the cheapest marks on the paper to recover
  • Timing problems are fixed with a stopwatch, not with more content

Lesson one is a marked script. Not a new topic, not a diagnostic quiz written by the tutor, but the most recent paper your child actually sat, read line by line against the published mark scheme. The output is a list of lost marks sorted by cause rather than a percentage, and in chemistry those causes fall into four reliable groups: content genuinely not known, chemistry understood but answered in the wrong register for the command term, calculation started correctly and abandoned before the final line, and questions left blank because the paper ran out of time.

Those four need completely different responses, which is why the sorting matters more than the total. Content gaps need teaching. Register problems need command-term work, which is quick and pays immediately. Abandoned calculations need method discipline, meaning every step written down even when the student can do it mentally. Unfinished papers need timing practice. A tutor who starts teaching before doing this sorting is guessing, and the family pays for the guess in weeks.

Lesson two takes the largest group and starts on it. If the loss is concentrated in Reactivity 2, the session covers amount of substance, rate and extent in that order, with a worked example and then questions the student does while the tutor watches. Watching matters: the moment a student stalls is far more informative than the written answer they eventually produce, and it cannot be seen in homework.

Lesson three closes the loop with a short timed set from the same area and a second marking against the scheme. By then the family has evidence rather than impressions, and the plan for the following six weeks writes itself. This sequence is identical whether the student lives inside the Emirates Hills gates, in The Meadows or along the Marina, because it is driven by the script rather than by the address.

02

The chemistry content map: Structure 1 to 3 and Reactivity 1 to 3

The current guide is organised around two organising concepts rather than a numbered topic list, and a tutor still working from the older structure will teach correct chemistry in an order that matches no current paper. Structure asks what matter is: the particulate model and the mole, bonding and structure, and the classification of elements and organic compounds. Reactivity asks what matter does: what drives reactions, how much and how fast and how far they go, and by what mechanisms.

That reorganisation has a real teaching consequence. Energetics and entropy now sit together under what drives chemical reactions, so a student who has met enthalpy but not entropy has half an answer to a spontaneity question. Equilibrium sits with rate and with amount of substance under how much, how fast and how far, which is why a question can move from a moles calculation into an equilibrium argument in the same part and catch out students who revised those as separate units.

Higher Level is not a different course. It is the same six areas with additional content, concentrated most visibly in energy cycles and in the electron-sharing and electron-pair-sharing reactions of Reactivity 3. An HL student who is struggling usually needs the additional material taught properly rather than the shared material revisited, and telling those two apart is the single most useful thing a first session can establish.

Use the table as a working map and confirm the detail through your school's IB coordinator, who holds the authoritative version of the guide. No tutoring page should be the final authority on a syllabus structure a grade depends on.

Reactivity 3Proton transfer, electron transfer, electron sharing and electron-pair sharing reactionsFull mechanisms, more demanding redox and acid-base calculationMechanisms drawn as pictures rather than as curly arrows showing electron movement
03

The command terms that decide whether a right answer scores

This is the part of chemistry tutoring that produces the fastest visible change, and almost nobody writing about IB chemistry online bothers with it. The IB mark scheme is built on command terms, and each one specifies a depth of answer. A student who explains when the question said state has wasted time. A student who states when the question said explain has lost the mark while knowing the answer perfectly. Both errors are invisible to the student and obvious on a marked script.

The pattern is learnable in about three sessions. State and identify want a short, unqualified answer. Outline wants a brief account without detail. Describe wants an account of events or features. Explain wants reasons or mechanisms, which means the word because, or its logical equivalent, has to appear. Deduce wants a conclusion reached from given information, so the information has to be referred to. Determine and calculate want a number with units and visible working. Discuss wants a balanced review, which means more than one position.

The practical method is a log. Every marked question gets its command term written next to the mark lost, and after two weeks a pattern appears: this student loses marks on explain and discuss, that one on deduce. The remedy is then specific rather than general, and it survives into the exam because the student starts reading the verb before the chemistry. It is the cheapest intervention available in this subject.

IB CHEMISTRY COMMAND TERMS — what the examiner is counting, and the error that loses the mark
Command termWhat the mark scheme expectsA chemistry exampleThe error that costs the mark
StateA short answer with no supporting argumentState the trend in atomic radius across period 3Writing a paragraph and burying the required statement in it
OutlineA brief account, no detailOutline how a buffer resists a change in pHGiving a full mechanism when two clauses were wanted
ExplainReasons or a mechanism, causally linkedExplain why the boiling point of water exceeds that of hydrogen sulfideNaming the intermolecular force without saying what it does to the energy required
DeduceA conclusion drawn from given informationDeduce the order of reaction from the data providedReaching the right order without referring to the data that justified it
DetermineA number obtained by calculation or analysis, with unitsDetermine the enthalpy change from the values givenA correct figure with no units, or working that skips the substitution line
DiscussA balanced review with more than one positionDiscuss the limitations of the model usedArguing one side thoroughly and never acknowledging the other
04

Moles, enthalpy and equilibrium: the three places grades quietly bleed

  • Convert to moles before anything else, and round only at the final line
  • Treat enthalpy signs as a consequence of energy flow, not as a rule to recall
  • Combine enthalpy and entropy when a question asks whether a reaction proceeds
  • Answer equilibrium questions through concentrations, not through direction alone
  • Always identify the limiting reagent before dividing by anything

If a chemistry grade is being lost in a diffuse, hard-to-diagnose way, it is almost always in one of three quantitative areas. The first is amount of substance. Students can define a mole and still lose marks across a whole paper by rounding mid-calculation, dropping units between steps, or failing to identify the limiting reagent before dividing. The remedy is procedural, not conceptual: write the balanced equation, write what you have under each species, convert everything to moles before anything else happens, and never round until the final line.

The second is energetics. Sign conventions in enthalpy are the single most common source of a confidently wrong answer in Reactivity 1. An exothermic change releases energy and carries a negative enthalpy change, and a student who has absorbed that as a rule rather than as a consequence will invert it under pressure. Entropy compounds the problem, because it is frequently taught as disorder and then examined as a quantity that has to be combined with enthalpy to reach a conclusion about spontaneity. Questions that ask for a judgement about whether a reaction proceeds need both terms handled with their signs intact.

The third is extent of reaction. Equilibrium questions reward a particular discipline: identify the change, apply the shift, then explain the shift in terms of the system opposing the change rather than preferring an outcome. Students who have learnt a phrase about shifting to the right produce answers that sound right and score nothing. The ones who score write about what happens to the concentrations and why the system responds as it does.

All three respond to filtered past-paper work rather than to re-teaching. Ten questions from the same area in one sitting makes the repeated trap visible to the student, which is a different kind of learning from being told about it. That is the argument for the programme in the next section.

05

Organic chemistry and the HL mechanisms

Organic chemistry is where Higher Level separates most sharply from Standard, and where the difference between a student who has memorised and a student who understands becomes impossible to hide. Structure 3 introduces functional groups as a classification system, and Reactivity 3 asks what those groups do: proton transfer, electron transfer, electron sharing and electron-pair sharing. At HL, that last category is where full mechanisms are expected.

The failure is nearly always the same. Students learn mechanisms as pictures to reproduce rather than as accounts of where electrons go. The curly arrow is treated as decoration, so it starts in the wrong place, points at the wrong atom, or is omitted at the step that actually carries the mark. An examiner reading that cannot award credit for an intention; the arrow either shows the movement of an electron pair from a specific source to a specific destination or it does not.

The repair is slow but completely reliable. Draw the mechanism while narrating what is electron-rich and what is electron-poor. Identify the nucleophile and the electrophile out loud before drawing anything. Then draw the arrows and check each one by asking what pair of electrons is moving and from where. Students who do this for twenty mechanisms stop needing to do it, because the pattern generalises. Students who skip it have to memorise every new mechanism separately, and in an exam they will meet one they have not seen.

Reaction pathways deserve their own practice. A multi-step synthesis question tests whether the student can plan backwards from the target, and that is a different skill from reciting a single conversion. Working a set of pathway questions in sequence, with the target written first and the route constructed in reverse, is one of the highest-return exercises available in HL chemistry.

06

An eight-week past-paper programme that actually changes the score

Eight weeks is the window most families in this cluster arrive with, usually after a disappointing mock. The temptation is to cover everything. The programme below does the opposite: it measures first, narrows hard, and spends the last fortnight on the mechanics of sitting the paper rather than on chemistry.

Week one is measurement. A full Paper 1 and Paper 2 under real timing, marked by the tutor against the published scheme, with every lost mark tagged by content area and command term. The output is a table the family can read, and it almost always surprises them: the area the student complains about is rarely the area costing the most marks. Weeks two to five then take the two costliest areas and work them with filtered past questions drawn across several series, ten or more from the same area in a sitting, so the repeated trap becomes visible rather than described.

Weeks six and seven return to whole papers, one of each per week, with the mark scheme read aloud against the student's script afterwards. This is where command-term discipline is consolidated, because the student hears what the examiner was counting while their own wording is still fresh. The final week is deliberately light: timing, data booklet navigation, the order in which to attempt questions, and a short written checklist to run before handing a paper in.

One note on materials. Past papers, mark schemes and syllabus documents belong to the IB and are not reproduced or supplied here. They are referenced and accessed through your school or the board's own channels, which is both the legal position and the practical one, since a school holds the correct version for your child's session.

07

The chemistry investigation: the uncertainty nobody records

A fifth of the grade sits in one independent investigation, capped at 3,000 words, and chemistry investigations fail in ways that are specific to chemistry. The commonest is a titration-based study in which the student records a volume to two decimal places and never records the uncertainty of the glassware that produced it. The second commonest is a rate study with too few data points to establish a relationship, because the time available was spent on three repeats of one concentration instead of five concentrations.

Both are design problems, which means both are fixable only before data collection. That is the single most important scheduling point in this section: useful tutoring on an investigation happens at the planning stage. A tutor reading a finished draft can improve how it is written, but cannot create data that was never gathered. Families who come for investigation help two weeks before submission are usually asking for the one thing that cannot be delivered.

The things worth checking at design stage are concrete. Is there a single independent variable that can actually be varied over a sensible range? Are the controlled variables genuinely controllable in a school laboratory? Does the measurement have an uncertainty the student can state, and will the processed uncertainty be small enough for the result to mean anything? Is there an accepted value or a literature comparison available for the conclusion to be measured against? A no to the last question is not fatal, but it is worth knowing before the bench work starts.

The boundary is the same as everywhere else on this site, and it is not negotiable. A tutor explains what the criteria reward, challenges the research question, points at a graph that does not support the stated claim, and gives feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor never writes, completes or produces the report. Providers in this market sell completed internal assessments outright; the person who carries the malpractice finding is your child, and the certificate is what is at risk.

08

What chemistry tutoring costs in Dubai, and what you can check yourself

Here is a useful way to read any tutoring price in this market: ask what you could verify independently. Almost nothing on the competing pages for these searches can be checked, because three of the six publish no price at all and the two that do quote US dollars. So the figures below are all attributed, in AED, with the provider that published them named, so that you can go and look.

What a parent can verify, and should: the hourly rate a provider advertises on its own site, the currency it quotes in, whether the rate includes VAT, whether the tutor holds the MoHRE private tuition work permit, and what the cancellation and replacement terms are in writing. What a parent cannot verify, and should discount accordingly: a satisfaction percentage without a sample size, a star rating a provider has awarded itself, a claim about examiner status with nothing to evidence it, and any promise about a grade.

On the numbers themselves: Bestimate's Dubai rate tables place a qualified subject tutor working online at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour and an IB, IGCSE or A Level specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above. TutorChase publishes AED 270. BartyED publishes AED 650 at the premium end. Budget online tutoring, generally delivered by university students, is advertised from around AED 45 to 150. Published in-home one-to-one rates run AED 180 to 500, with monthly in-home packages of four two-hour sessions appearing at AED 1,599 to 1,799 against an online package advertised at AED 799 a month for eight sessions.

Two things that belong in the same frame. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. And IB Gram does not sell in-home visits in the UAE at all: lessons are one-to-one over live video, which is why the in-home column above is market context rather than an option on offer. The figures are market rates read in October 2026, not a price list; ask for a current quote and use the free first lesson before committing anything.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Emirates Hills

Where a student lives changes two things for chemistry: which school's laboratory and cohort they sit in, and the hour at which a session can realistically start. The notes below cover both.

Emirates Hills

Gated villa plots with long internal roads, so the bus run home is the binding constraint. HL Chemistry requests from here usually come in the second term of DP1, once the Reactivity 1 energetics work has been assessed for the first time.

The Meadows

Hosts an IB continuum school inside the community, and most chemistry students here have been assessed against MYP criteria for years. They write explanations comfortably and under-practise calculation, which is the opposite of the usual pattern.

The Springs

A large British-curriculum secondary sits inside Springs 3, so the chemistry work requested from this community is dominated by Cambridge 0620 technique and by students preparing to move into DP Chemistry the following September.

The Lakes

Often split across sectors, with one child taking DP Chemistry and a sibling taking A Level Chemistry. The two courses look similar and reward quite different answer structures, which is worth separating explicitly in back-to-back sessions.

The Greens

Apartment living with short journeys, so earlier weekday slots are available. The limiting factor is a shared desk and background noise rather than traffic, and headphones make a measurable difference to a calculation-heavy hour.

The Views

Most secondary students travel out of community, typically towards Al Sufouh or Al Barsha. With door-to-door times of 35 to 45 minutes in evening traffic, a 5.30pm chemistry session is the realistic booking rather than a 4.30pm one.

Al Sufouh

Several of the larger DP cohorts this catchment feeds are taught here. Laboratory access for Extended Essay work is generally better at these campuses, which changes what is sensible to attempt in a chemistry essay.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Reached from Emirates Hills along Sheikh Zayed Road and a common destination for families moving from villa to apartment living. Chemistry students who move mid-DP keep the same tutor and the same slot, which is why the lessons are online.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and the last marked paper

The useful first message says Higher or Standard Level, which content areas the school has taught, whether the investigation has started, and the date of the next assessment that counts. Attach the most recent marked script if you have it; it shortens the first lesson considerably.

  2. 02

A free first lesson spent reading that script

The matched tutor goes through the paper against the published scheme and tags every lost mark by content area and command term. If the weeks remaining will not reach the grade you are hoping for, you hear that here. You decide afterwards whether to continue.

  3. 03

A written eight-week plan with the areas named

You receive the sequence counted back from the paper date, naming the two content areas being targeted, the filtered question sets being used and where the investigation sits. It is a document, not a verbal assurance about effort.

Weekly lessons with marked work between them

Sessions run one-to-one over live video on a held Gulf Standard Time slot, with notes afterwards and a calculation or mechanism set for the week. The tutor marks that work, because practice nobody marks only makes the same error more automatic.

  5. 05

A command-term log the student can read

Every marked question gets its command term recorded beside the mark lost, so after a fortnight the student can see which verbs cost them. This is the cheapest recoverable loss in IB Chemistry and it is rarely addressed at school.

  6. 06

A midpoint retest, not a progress chat

Halfway through, the first targeted area is retested under timing. If it has closed, it is dropped and the next one takes its place. If the tutor is not the right fit for your child, the match changes without any discussion needed.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught from the current six-area guide

Structure 1 to 3 and Reactivity 1 to 3, in the order the current guide uses. A tutor working from an older topic list teaches correct chemistry in a sequence that no current paper follows, and the student revises against the wrong map.

Command terms treated as the mark scheme treats them

State, outline, explain, deduce, determine and discuss each specify a depth of answer. Logging which verbs cost marks and drilling those is the fastest visible improvement available in this subject.

Filtered past-paper work, not whole papers only

Ten questions from one content area in a sitting makes the repeated trap visible to the student. Whole papers measure; filtered sets fix. The programme uses both, in that order.

Investigation help at the design stage

Chemistry investigations fail on uncertainty never recorded and on too few data points. Both are design faults, so the useful conversation happens before the bench work, not two weeks before submission.

Figures you can go and verify

Every AED rate on this page names the provider that published it. No self-awarded ratings, no satisfaction percentages without a sample, no claims about grades achieved.

Delivery and limits stated in advance

Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; there is no UAE office and no tutor is sent to a UAE address. Where a specialism is thin at the hour you need, you are told before you book.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Emirates Hills: your questions answered

Which six content areas does the current IB Chemistry guide use?+

Structure 1 covers models of the particulate nature of matter, including the nuclear atom, electron configurations, the mole and ideal gases. Structure 2 covers the ionic, covalent and metallic models of bonding. Structure 3 covers classification, both of elements in the periodic table and of organic compounds by functional group. Reactivity 1 asks what drives chemical reactions, bringing enthalpy and entropy together. Reactivity 2 asks how much, how fast and how far. Reactivity 3 asks what the mechanisms are. Higher Level covers the same six with additional content rather than different content.

Why does my child write correct chemistry and still lose the mark?+

Almost always because the answer does not match the command term. The IB mark scheme specifies a depth of response for each verb: state wants a short unqualified answer, explain wants causally linked reasons, deduce wants a conclusion that refers to the information given, determine wants a number with units and visible working, and discuss wants more than one position. A student who explains when the question said state loses time; one who states when it said explain loses the mark while knowing the answer. Logging the command term beside each lost mark makes the pattern visible within a fortnight.

What are the commonest moles calculation errors in IB Chemistry?+

Four, in order of frequency. Rounding mid-calculation and carrying the error to a confident wrong final answer. Dropping units between steps so that a correct number ends up attached to the wrong quantity. Dividing before identifying the limiting reagent, which gives a plausible answer to a different question. And skipping the substitution line, which forfeits method marks even when the final figure is right. The remedy is procedural rather than conceptual: balanced equation first, convert everything to moles before anything else, show every line, round only at the end.

How are enthalpy sign conventions examined in Reactivity 1?+

As a consequence of energy flow rather than as a rule to recall, which is why students who memorised it invert it under pressure. An exothermic change releases energy to the surroundings and carries a negative enthalpy change. Questions in this area frequently go further and ask for a judgement about whether a reaction proceeds, which needs enthalpy and entropy handled together with their signs intact. Entropy taught loosely as untidiness produces answers that read well and score nothing, because the mark is awarded for combining the two terms to reach the conclusion.

Why do equilibrium answers that sound right score nothing?+

Because they describe a direction instead of a mechanism. A student who has learnt a phrase about shifting to the right can produce a fluent sentence that the mark scheme cannot credit. What earns the mark is identifying the change imposed on the system, stating what happens to the concentrations involved, and explaining that the system responds so as to oppose the imposed change. Answered that way the chemistry is visible and the mark follows. This is one of the clearest cases in the subject where filtered past-paper practice beats re-teaching the topic.

How should HL organic mechanisms be learnt so they survive an exam?+

As accounts of electron movement, not as pictures to reproduce. The curly arrow has to start at a specific pair of electrons and point at a specific destination, and an examiner cannot credit an intention. The reliable method is to identify what is electron-rich and what is electron-poor before drawing anything, name the nucleophile and the electrophile out loud, then draw each arrow and check what pair is moving and from where. Students who do that for roughly twenty mechanisms stop needing to, because the pattern generalises to mechanisms they have never seen.

What goes wrong with titration-based chemistry investigations?+

The uncertainty of the glassware is almost never recorded. A student writes a volume to two decimal places, which looks precise, and never states the uncertainty of the burette or pipette that produced it, so the processed result has no meaningful error to compare against an accepted value. The second failure is a rate study with too few concentrations, because the available time went into repeats of one. Both are design faults, so they can only be fixed before data collection. Investigation help two weeks before submission cannot create data that was never gathered.

Does IB Gram send a chemistry tutor into Emirates Hills?+

No. Teaching for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists in India only. There is no UAE office or centre. The practical reason is the specialism: command of HL Reactivity 3 mechanisms and of quantitative equilibrium is narrow, and a tutor who spends two hours driving for one hour of teaching cannot sustain a week built from that narrow a specialism. Removing the journey widens the pool to whoever is genuinely strongest at the hour you need.

What does an IB Chemistry specialist charge in Dubai in AED?+

Market figures rather than ours, so you can check them. Bestimate's Dubai rate tables place a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour and an IB, IGCSE or A Level specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above. TutorChase publishes AED 270 and BartyED publishes AED 650 at the premium end. Budget online tutoring is advertised from about AED 45 to 150. Published in-home rates run AED 180 to 500 an hour. These were read in October 2026 and are not IB Gram's price list, so ask for a current quote and use the free first lesson.

How does DP Chemistry differ from Cambridge 0620 in what it asks for?+

The content overlap is larger than students expect and the assessment overlap is smaller. Three demands are new: quantitative work carried through several steps without intermediate rounding, thermodynamic reasoning in which signs carry meaning, and extended explanation of mechanism rather than a short structured answer. A student who did well on 0620 Paper 4 often finds DP Paper 2 unfamiliar purely because of answer length. Six to eight weeks of focused work, ideally in the summer before DP1, closes most of the gap, and it is writing practice rather than content revision.

Is HL Chemistry realistic alongside Applications and Interpretation maths?+

Yes, with eyes open about where the friction will be. Logarithms and the manipulation of exponential relationships arrive in chemistry before that maths course has formalised them, so a few minutes of algebra at the start of a chemistry session often saves the hour. The more consequential question is admissions: medicine, pharmacy and chemical engineering courses state their own prerequisites and some name the mathematics route explicitly. Read the requirement on each university's own admissions pages for the year of entry before the DP1 choice is finalised rather than afterwards.

How many chemistry sessions a week do Emirates Hills families usually book?+

One a week through DP1 and DP2, rising to two for an eight-week block before mocks or the May session. One weekly hour is enough to give each content area a second pass with marked work in between, which is what actually moves a grade over two years. Two a week is for triage: one session teaching the costliest area and one sitting and reviewing filtered past questions. More than two is rarely productive, because the limiting factor becomes the time the student has to do and absorb the work set, not the teaching.

Will a tutor supply IB past papers and mark schemes for chemistry?+

No, and you should be wary of anyone who offers to. Past papers, mark schemes and subject guides belong to the IB and reproducing or distributing them is a copyright matter; for unreleased material it is also an assessment-security matter. A tutor references them and works from what your child's school provides, which has the practical advantage of being the correct version for the session being sat. If a provider is handing out a library of board material, that tells you something about how else it operates.

How much of the chemistry grade can eight weeks realistically move?+

Enough to be worth doing, and no honest tutor will put a number on it. What eight weeks reliably delivers is the recovery of marks lost to command-term mismatch, to abandoned calculations and to unfinished papers, because those are technique rather than knowledge. It also closes one or two content areas properly. What it does not do is cover six content areas from scratch. Any provider offering a specific grade improvement is selling a feeling, and no claim about outcomes appears anywhere on this site without a sample size and a method.

What happens if no HL Chemistry tutor is free at our slot?+

You are told before any booking, with the alternatives stated plainly. HL Chemistry at Gulf Standard Time evening slots is reasonably well covered, but a narrow request at an awkward hour, or one arriving in the fortnight before a May session, cannot always be met. In that case you are offered the nearest available specialist and the slot that genuinely exists, or an honest no. No competing provider in this market publishes a coverage limit, which is exactly why it is written here rather than discovered in the third week.
