IB Maths Tutor in Emirates Hills

An IB maths tutor in Emirates Hills is usually hired for one of two reasons: a Higher Level student whose Paper 1 marks collapsed without a calculator, or a Standard Level student whose exploration has no mathematics in it yet. This page answers both from the syllabus outwards. Lessons run online over live video on a shared whiteboard, scheduled around Emirates Living school-run times, and the first one is free.

IB & IGCSE in Emirates Hills

The maths problem in an Emirates Hills household is almost never the whole subject

A parent in Emirates Hills who searches for an IB maths tutor has usually just read a report card or a mock transcript, and the number on it does not match the child they know. The instinct is to book help with mathematics. The useful move is narrower than that. IB Mathematics is four courses, not one, and each of those courses is assessed through two or three papers with different rules about what a calculator may do. A student can be comfortable in three of those components and lose a full grade in the fourth, and the grade that comes home does not say which.

The commonest pattern we see from the Emirates Living schools is a Higher Level Analysis and Approaches student who is fine in Paper 2, where the graphic display calculator carries a chunk of the work, and three marks a question down in Paper 1, where it is confiscated. That is not a mathematics problem in the abstract. It is a specific, teachable gap in algebraic manipulation, exact-value trigonometry and the habit of leaving an answer in surd or logarithmic form rather than reaching for a decimal. Eight weeks of targeted non-calculator work moves it. Eight weeks of general maths tuition does not.

The second pattern is the exploration. The internal assessment is worth a fifth of the final mathematics grade and it is marked on five criteria, only one of which is about whether the mathematics is correct. Students arrive with a topic that interests them and no mathematical question inside it, or with a sophisticated model and no reflection on why the model fails. Both lose marks in places a subject teacher with thirty other explorations to supervise rarely has time to name individually.

The third, and the one families in this part of Dubai hit most often, is a transition problem. Emirates Hills sits beside a cluster of schools where a child can do IGCSE Extended mathematics until sixteen and then walk into Analysis and Approaches Higher Level. The two syllabuses do not meet cleanly. IGCSE Extended ends with the quadratic formula, basic differentiation in some specifications and a light touch of trigonometric graphs. AA Higher Level assumes proof by induction, binomial expansion with fractional indices, compound angle identities and a working comfort with radians that IGCSE never asked for. A student who was an A* candidate in June can be a grade 4 candidate in November and nothing about them has changed except the syllabus.

So the first thing a good tutor does is diagnose which of those three it is, using the student's own marked papers rather than a generic placement test. Everything on this page is written to let you do part of that diagnosis yourself before you speak to anyone: what each paper contains, what each mark is worth in minutes, where this syllabus reliably takes marks off UAE students, and what the market charges in dirhams to fix it.

At a glance

  • Four separate courses sit behind the words IB Mathematics: AA and AI, each at SL and HL
  • Paper 1 in Analysis and Approaches is sat without a graphic display calculator
  • The exploration carries 20 of the 100 available marks in every one of the four courses
  • Higher Level adds Paper 3, a two-question investigation worth a fifth of the grade
  • IGCSE Extended to AA Higher Level is the steepest routine jump in the Dubai school year
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Emirates Hills children reach IB Mathematics by several routes. Two of the schools on the edge of Emirates Living run the IB continuum from primary upwards; others run a British primary and secondary and only meet the IB at sixteen, or not at all. The programme your child is in changes what a maths tutor should be working on this term.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-K to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led primary with no external examinations and no prescribed mathematics scheme. Number, pattern, measurement, shape and data handling are taught through units of inquiry, so the sequence of topics varies more between schools than it would in a British primary. Assessment is largely teacher judgement against learning outcomes, reported in descriptive bands rather than percentages.

In Emirates Hills the PYP question is almost always about continuity rather than content. A family moving a nine-year-old from a British primary nearby into a continuum school finds the written-method expectations different: column methods arrive later, mental strategies earlier. Tutoring at this stage is about keeping arithmetic fluency sharp while the child adapts to an inquiry format, not about pushing ahead.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Mathematics is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of eight: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Standard and extended mathematics diverge from around MYP 4. The extended course is the one that feeds Analysis and Approaches Higher Level, and the decision is usually made a full year before anyone mentions the Diploma.

The MYP-to-Diploma gap is the quietest risk in Emirates Living. Criterion B investigations reward pattern-finding and generalisation, which is excellent preparation for Paper 3 at Higher Level, but MYP marking does not demand the algebraic speed that AA Higher Level assumes from week one. A tutor working with an MYP 5 student in this area should be adding drill volume, not extra investigation practice.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Every Diploma candidate takes a mathematics course. The choice is Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each at Standard or Higher Level. Analysis is the algebraic and proof-based route; Applications is modelling, statistics and technology-led. Both carry a 20-mark exploration. Higher Level in either route adds Paper 3, a long investigation sat in a single hour.

Dubai universities and the UK engineering departments Emirates Hills families most often apply to treat these two routes differently. Several engineering and mathematics courses name Analysis and Approaches Higher Level explicitly and will not accept Applications Higher Level in its place. Check the exact wording on each university's entry page before the subject choice is locked in Year 11, because changing route in Year 12 costs a term.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route combining two or more Diploma courses with a career-related study and a core of personal and professional skills. Where mathematics is taken it is usually Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level, assessed exactly as it is for Diploma candidates, with the same exploration requirement and the same papers.

Few Dubai schools run the Career-related Programme and none of the schools immediately around Emirates Living is widely known for it, so most families here will meet it only if they move. If your child is on this route, tutoring load is lighter than a full Diploma but the exploration deadline is identical and tends to be forgotten, because the rest of the timetable has a different rhythm.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

IB Mathematics is one subject on a transcript and four syllabuses in practice. The list below names what each component actually assesses and where marks leave the page, so you can point a tutor at the right half of the course rather than booking general help and hoping.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL

Higher Level

Proof by induction, complex numbers in modulus-argument and Euler form, vectors in three dimensions, compound angle identities, Maclaurin series, differential equations. Paper 1 is sat without technology and is where most of the grade is lost. Marks go on unsimplified exact values, missing constants of integration and proofs that assert rather than show.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL

Standard Level

Sequences and series, functions and transformations, trigonometry in radians, differentiation and integration of standard functions, probability and statistics. The non-calculator paper still exists at Standard Level and still carries the losses. Students who met logarithms only briefly at IGCSE are routinely caught by log laws under exam pressure.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL

Higher Level

Statistical modelling, regression and correlation, matrices and transition matrices, graph theory, complex numbers in a modelling context, numerical methods and differential equations solved with Euler's method. Technology is permitted throughout. Marks are lost on interpretation rather than computation: a correct number with no statement of what it means scores part credit.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL

Standard Level

Descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing with chi-squared and t-tests, linear and non-linear models, financial mathematics, basic calculus in applied contexts. The common failure is treating a modelling question as an algebra question and never returning to the context the question set up.

Paper 1 technique

AA HL, AA SL

Non-calculator work is a distinct skill, not simply the same mathematics without a machine. It needs exact-value trigonometry held in memory, confident surd and index manipulation, and the discipline to leave an answer as a fraction. This is the single most trainable component in the whole course and the one most students never practise separately.

Paper 3 investigation

HL only, both routes

One hour, two extended problems, each building from a concrete case to a general result. It rewards students who can spot a pattern, state a conjecture, and then prove or justify it. Preparation is not more content; it is supervised practice at writing up a developing argument under time pressure.

The mathematical exploration

SL and HL, both routes

A twelve to twenty page individual piece worth 20 marks, marked on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. The use-of-mathematics criterion carries the largest block of marks and is the one students most often leave underpowered by choosing a topic that cannot bear the level required.

Graphic display calculator fluency

All four courses

Paper 2 and Paper 3 assume a student can find an intersection, solve numerically, run a regression, use a distribution menu and store values without retyping. Schools teach the menus once in Year 12. Students who never rebuilt the skill lose minutes per question, and minutes are the scarce resource in a ninety-mark paper.

Command-term discipline

All four courses

Show, hence, verify, justify, determine and find each license different work. Hence means the previous part must be used; verify allows substitution where determine does not. A student who treats all six as instructions to get the answer will lose method marks they had already earned on the page.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Mathematics tutoring works differently from essay subjects because the evidence is on the page in front of both people. The three formats below reflect what the work actually needs at different points in the two-year Diploma, and all three run online over live video with a shared annotated whiteboard.

Weekly one-to-one, syllabus-paced

A fixed slot each week running alongside the school's scheme of work, pre-teaching the topic the class is about to meet or consolidating the one it has just left. The student brings the week's marked work; the tutor reads the method, not just the answer, and rebuilds the step where it broke.

  • One hour or ninety minutes, the same evening each week
  • Student shares their written work to camera or uploads a photo beforehand
  • Worked solutions annotated live, saved and sent after the session
  • Short targeted practice set between sessions, marked at the next one

Paper-technique blocks

A short intensive run of sessions aimed at one component rather than the whole syllabus. The commonest is a six to eight week non-calculator block for Analysis and Approaches students, working exclusively from past Paper 1 questions under timed conditions and then unpicking each lost mark against the published mark scheme.

  • One component only: Paper 1, Paper 2 or Paper 3
  • Timed question sets sat before the session, reviewed during it
  • Error log kept across the block so patterns become visible
  • Ends when the error pattern changes, not after a fixed number of weeks

Exploration supervision

Scheduled support across the months the exploration is written, structured around the five assessment criteria. The tutor helps the student find a question with enough mathematics in it, checks that the level is appropriate for the course, and gives written feedback on the student's own drafts. The tutor does not write, rewrite or supply content.

  • Topic viability check before the student commits time to it
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft
  • Separate attention to reflection, which students systematically underwrite
  • All feedback given in writing so the school can see the support was legitimate

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Emirates Hills

01

What an IB maths tutor in Emirates Hills is actually being hired to fix

An IB maths tutor in Emirates Hills is hired to close a gap between the mathematics a student can do and the mathematics an IB paper asks for under timed conditions. Those are different things, and the difference is where almost every lost grade lives. A student who can integrate by substitution on a worksheet may still lose the marks in Paper 1 because the integral is disguised, the constant is forgotten, or the question wanted an exact value and got a decimal.

The first session should therefore not be a lesson. It should be a diagnosis run on the student's own evidence: the last two marked assessments, the most recent mock, and the class topic tests from the current term. A tutor who asks for these before the trial has read the course. One who proposes starting at the beginning of the syllabus has not, and will spend eight weeks reteaching material the student already holds while the actual gap stays open.

What the diagnosis is looking for is narrow and specific. Does the loss cluster in one paper? Does it cluster in one topic across papers? Does it appear only in questions carrying five or more marks, which would point at structure and stamina rather than content? Is the student losing method marks for unshown working, which is a writing habit, or final-answer marks after correct method, which is arithmetic under pressure? Each of those four findings leads to a different programme of work, and three of them can be fixed faster than a parent expects.

Emirates Hills adds one practical constraint worth naming early. The school day in this part of Dubai ends between two and three, but the drive home, an activity and a meal put the realistic start of serious mathematics somewhere after five for most households. An online session removes the tutor's travel from that equation entirely, which in practice is what makes a six o'clock weekday slot possible at all.

02

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation: the choice that shapes two years

The route decision is made in Year 11 and it is the single most consequential mathematics choice a Diploma student makes. Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic, proof-oriented course: it builds towards calculus, series and formal reasoning, and it keeps a non-calculator paper at both levels. Applications and Interpretation is a modelling course: statistics, regression, matrices, graph theory, financial mathematics, with technology permitted in every paper.

Neither is a soft option and the grade distributions do not support the common staffroom claim that one is easier. They demand different things. Analysis Higher Level rewards a student who enjoys manipulation and will sit with a proof for twenty minutes. Applications Higher Level rewards a student who can read a context, choose a model, run it and then say in a sentence what the number means for the situation described. A student placed in the wrong one by reputation rather than temperament loses more than a student placed one level too high in the right one.

The constraint that matters for Emirates Hills families is university entry. Engineering, mathematics, physics and many economics and computer science courses at UK and European universities name Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and will not substitute Applications Higher Level. Some UAE universities are more flexible, but the published prospectus is the only reliable source, and it changes between admissions cycles. Read the exact course page for every university on the list before Year 11 options close, and keep a dated screenshot.

The table below sets the two routes side by side on the dimensions that actually drive the decision. Treat it as a structure for the conversation with the school's Diploma coordinator rather than as a replacement for it, and confirm the current assessment model against the IB subject guide your school is teaching, since the IB revises its guides on a rolling cycle.

03

The papers, the marks, and how many minutes you get per mark

Every IB mathematics grade is assembled from external papers and one internal piece, and the arithmetic of that assembly is more useful to a parent than any general statement about difficulty. The externals carry four fifths of the grade; the exploration carries the remaining fifth and is the only component the student controls entirely. Higher Level students sit three papers, Standard Level students sit two.

The number to hold on to is minutes per mark. At Standard Level each paper runs ninety minutes for eighty marks, which is a touch over a minute a mark. At Higher Level the papers run two hours for one hundred and ten marks, which is almost exactly the same rate. Paper 3 at Higher Level is one hour for fifty-five marks and feels slower because the two questions are long, but the rate is identical. Students who run out of time are not usually slow at mathematics; they are spending four minutes on a two-mark opener because it looked unfamiliar.

That diagnosis changes what a tutor should do. If the error log shows marks lost at the end of the paper, the work is pacing and question triage, not content. If it shows marks lost evenly throughout on method, the work is content. If it shows full marks on parts a and b and nothing on part c across many questions, the work is extended reasoning, which is Paper 3 preparation whether or not the student sits Paper 3.

Confirm the component weightings and durations your child faces against the subject guide their school is teaching before you build a revision plan on them. The IB publishes guides on a rolling revision cycle and schools can be teaching different cohorts under different guides in the same building.

Where IB mathematics marks actually go missing, topic by topic

  • Radians versus degrees inside calculus questions, especially differentiation of trigonometric functions
  • Logarithm laws needed eighteen months after they were taught, in exponential models
  • Definite integrals where part of the region lies below the horizontal axis
  • Scalar and vector products computed correctly and then not interpreted
  • Conditional probability answered as if it were unconditional
  • Binomial expansion with negative or fractional indices at Higher Level

Mark loss in IB mathematics is not random and it is not spread evenly across the syllabus. A handful of topics account for a disproportionate share of the gap between a 5 and a 7, and they are the same topics year after year because they each sit at a join between two skills rather than inside one.

Trigonometry in radians is the clearest example. Students meet degrees at IGCSE, switch to radians in the Diploma, and then meet calculus questions where a derivative is only correct in radians. The error is invisible in a single question and fatal across a paper. Logarithms are the second: the laws are taught in a week, used for two months, and then needed again eighteen months later in an exponential modelling question that nobody connected back to them.

Integration is the third and the most expensive. A missing constant of integration is one mark; failing to recognise that a question wants a definite integral representing an area under a curve below the axis is three or four. Vectors at Higher Level are the fourth: students can compute a scalar product and cannot explain what it tells them about the angle, so the interpretation marks go. Probability distributions are the fifth, where a conditional probability question is answered with an unconditional calculation that was correct for a question nobody asked.

A tutor working from the student's own marked papers will find three or four of these in an afternoon. The value of naming them is that each has a short, specific remedy, and the student stops believing that they are bad at mathematics when in fact they are reliably losing marks in five identifiable places.

05

The exploration: twenty marks, five criteria, and the two nobody prepares for

The mathematical exploration is a twelve to twenty page individual piece written across the second half of the first Diploma year and the start of the second. It is worth twenty marks in every one of the four mathematics courses, which makes it a fifth of the final grade, and it is the only part of the subject a student can work on without time pressure. Most students treat it as homework and lose marks they could not lose anywhere else.

The marks are split across five criteria. Presentation covers structure, coherence and whether a reader can follow the argument without rereading. Mathematical communication covers notation, defined variables, labelled graphs and consistent use of symbols. Personal engagement asks whether the student actually did something rather than reproducing a textbook treatment. Reflection asks whether the student evaluated what they found, considered limitations and extended the work. Use of mathematics carries the largest single block and asks whether the mathematics is correct, relevant to the course, and of a level appropriate to it.

Reflection and personal engagement are where Emirates Hills students most often leave marks on the table, and for a predictable reason: both reward the untidy parts of the process, and strong students write up the clean version. A student who tried a model, found it failed, and switched approach has material for high reflection marks and usually deletes it. A tutor's most useful intervention is often to make the student keep a dated working log from the first week, so the reflection section has something true to say.

The boundary matters as much as the technique. A tutor may discuss topic viability, point out that the mathematics chosen is below the level of the course, explain a method the student has not met, and give written feedback on a draft. A tutor may not write any part of the exploration, supply a structure for the student to fill in, or correct the mathematics directly on the student's page. The exploration carries the student's authenticity declaration and their school's; crossing that line risks the whole Diploma.

Calculator work Paper 2 assumes and most students were taught once

Paper 2 at both levels, and Paper 3 at Higher Level, are written on the assumption that the student has a graphic display calculator and can drive it without thinking. Schools teach the device in a block early in Year 12, usually in a single week, and then never return to it. By the mock season eighteen months later a sizeable share of students are navigating menus by memory of a lesson they half-attended.

The cost is measured in minutes, and minutes are what the paper is short of. Finding the intersection of two curves should take fifteen seconds; a student hunting for the right menu takes ninety and then retypes a value with a rounding error. Running a regression and reading off the coefficient of determination should be automatic for Applications students; so should using the distribution menus for binomial and normal probabilities, and the numerical solver for equations that cannot be solved analytically.

There is a second, subtler skill: knowing when not to use it. Paper 2 questions frequently have an analytic route that is faster than the calculator route, and a student who reaches for the device on every part burns time. Conversely some questions are written so that only a numerical method will work, and a student who insists on algebra will not finish. Teaching that judgement is unglamorous and it reliably moves a grade boundary.

An online lesson handles this better than most parents expect. The tutor can see the calculator screen on the student's camera or through a shared emulator, annotate the keystroke sequence on the whiteboard, and save the sequence as a reference card the student keeps. That artefact matters more than the lesson: the student reviews a one-page keystroke sheet the night before the paper rather than relearning menus in the exam hall.

07

What past-paper work should look like from October onwards

Past papers are the most misused resource in IB mathematics. A student who works through a paper, marks it, notes the score and moves to the next one is generating a number and no learning. The paper is a diagnostic instrument, and its value is almost entirely in what happens after the marking.

The structure that works is three-part and it takes longer than sitting the paper. First, sit it to time, in one piece, without notes, on paper rather than a screen. Second, mark it against the official mark scheme and record not the score but the reason for each lost mark in a log with a topic label and an error type: content, method, arithmetic, reading, or time. Third, and this is the part that gets skipped, reattempt only the questions that were lost for content or method, a week later, cold.

After four papers the log tells a story that no single paper does. Perhaps every loss labelled time sits in the last twenty marks, which is a pacing problem. Perhaps content losses cluster in two syllabus topics, which is three sessions of work. Perhaps arithmetic errors dominate, in which case the remedy is checking habits rather than more mathematics. Emirates Hills students sitting the May session usually have enough time to run this cycle properly if it starts in October and is not front-loaded into March.

On sourcing: use the papers your school provides and the official board material your school has licensed. We do not host, reproduce or distribute IB past papers, mark schemes, subject guides or grade boundary tables, and neither should anyone selling you tutoring. Ask your child's Diploma coordinator which material the school holds and work from that.

08

What IB mathematics tutoring costs around Emirates Hills, in dirhams

Published pricing is scarce in this market. Of the tutoring companies ranking for Dubai IB queries, several publish no hourly figure at all and two quote in US dollars, which is not the currency a UAE family transacts in. The table below collects rates those providers published themselves, with the provider named, so you can see the shape of the market before anyone quotes you.

The pattern is consistent across sources. Online tuition from a general or university-student tutor sits at the bottom of the range. A qualified subject tutor working online sits in the middle. A specialist in a named Diploma subject at Higher Level sits higher, and in-home visits add a premium that reflects travel time rather than teaching quality. Premium named or examiner-linked tutors sit above all of it. Monthly packages advertised in this market have included online blocks around AED 799 a month for eight sessions and in-home blocks between AED 1,599 and AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour sessions.

Two things are worth saying plainly about those figures. They are market rates published by other providers, not IB Gram's price list, and they date from the October 2026 research that built this page. And a higher rate buys a narrower specialist, not a different quality of hour: the reason an Analysis and Approaches Higher Level specialist costs more than a general maths tutor is scarcity, not magic. For a student losing marks to arithmetic habits, the cheaper tutor is the correct purchase.

Against those numbers, context helps. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's economic incentives package, so a tutoring budget set last year has not been squeezed by a fee increase this year. For our own pricing, the honest answer is that it depends on the lane and the hours, and the free trial lesson exists so you can judge the hour before you commit to a figure.

Academic honesty in mathematics, and the permit question parents should ask

Two boundaries matter when you hire mathematics help in Dubai, and both are easy to check before money changes hands. The first is academic honesty. The exploration is submitted under an authenticity declaration signed by the student and countersigned by the school. Work produced by anyone else, including a tutor, is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student, not the tutor. Some providers in this market sell completed internal assessments outright. That is not a grey area and no responsible tutor goes near it.

What a mathematics tutor may legitimately do is wide and useful: teach the content, explain a method the student has not met, discuss whether a chosen exploration topic can carry the level of the course, read a student's own draft and give written feedback against the criteria, and model the structure of a good write-up using a different example. What they may not do is write, rewrite, dictate, fill in, or correct mathematics directly on the student's submitted page. Ask any tutor to state that boundary in their own words before you book, and treat an evasive answer as an answer.

The second boundary is the work permit. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated. The private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, free of charge, valid for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so be wary of anyone quoting you a figure.

A related point that catches Abu Dhabi families more than Dubai ones, but is worth knowing either way: press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules indicates that school staff may not take paid private tutoring work with students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction. If a teacher at your child's school offers private lessons to your child, that is a question for the school, not a shortcut.

10

Starting with an IB maths tutor from an Emirates Hills address

The honest version of getting started is shorter than most providers make it sound. You send the course and level, the specific component where marks are being lost, your child's school and year, and two or three evening windows that genuinely work in your week. Within a working day or two you get a named tutor in that lane with their teaching background, and a free trial lesson to judge the hour by.

Delivery is online, one-to-one, over live video, with a shared whiteboard that both people can write on. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For an Emirates Hills family, that is less of a compromise than it sounds and often the opposite. The pool of tutors who teach Analysis and Approaches Higher Level to examination standard is small, and restricting it to people who can drive to a villa in Emirates Living by six o'clock shrinks it to almost nothing. Online, the constraint disappears and the specialist is available at the hour you need.

If no specialist is free in your window, we say so rather than substituting a general tutor and hoping. The usual outcome is a different evening slot with the right person, which almost always beats the right evening with the wrong one. For a Higher Level student eight weeks from a mock, the subject match matters more than the hour.

What to have ready for the trial: the last two marked papers with the teacher's annotations visible, the current topic list from the school, the exploration title if one exists, and a sentence from your child about which part of mathematics they would most like to stop dreading. That last one is more diagnostic than it sounds and it takes the pressure off the first fifteen minutes.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Emirates Hills

Emirates Hills sits in the middle of the Emirates Living cluster, and IB mathematics demand around it is not evenly spread. Some neighbouring communities feed continuum IB schools where a child has been doing MYP mathematics since Year 7; others feed British schools where the IB appears only at sixteen. The notes below describe what that means for the mathematics specifically.

The Meadows

Shares the Emirates Living school edge with Emirates Hills and feeds the same continuum schools, so Meadows students more often arrive at Diploma mathematics from MYP extended rather than from IGCSE Extended. Their gap is algebraic speed rather than unfamiliar content.

The Springs

A younger demographic on average, with more primary and MYP enquiries than Diploma ones. The mathematics question here is usually about keeping a child on the extended MYP track so that Analysis and Approaches Higher Level stays available two years later.

The Lakes

Small, quiet and close enough to the same schools that scheduling is identical to Emirates Hills. Diploma enquiries from here skew towards Applications and Interpretation, often from families aiming at business, economics and design degrees rather than engineering.

The Greens

Apartment living with a wider mix of school choices, including several British schools where students sit IGCSE and then transfer into the Diploma elsewhere. The IGCSE Extended to AA Higher Level jump is the dominant tutoring request from this community.

The Views

Adjacent to The Greens and drawing on the same schools, with a slightly older student profile. Most enquiries concern exploration supervision and Paper 1 technique in the second year of the Diploma rather than early-course support.

Dubai Marina

A ten to twenty minute drive depending on the hour, and a different school set, including large British schools and an IB school on the Al Sufouh side. Marina Diploma students tend to be in bigger cohorts, where individual exploration supervision is thinner on the ground.

JLT

Dense apartment living with a very mixed school map and a high proportion of mid-year arrivals. Mathematics enquiries from JLT often involve a student joining a Diploma cohort a term late and needing to close a specific block of missed topics.

Al Sufouh

Home to several established IB schools and therefore to students whose mathematics teaching is strong but whose cohorts are large. Requests here concentrate on Paper 3 preparation and on Higher Level students pushing from a 5 to a 6.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Emirates Hills

Schools on the Emirates Living edge

The schools within a short drive of an Emirates Hills villa run a mix of curricula. Two offer the IB continuum including MYP and Diploma mathematics; the others run a British route to IGCSE and then split towards A Level or the Diploma. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; no affiliation is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the lane, not just the subject

Analysis or Applications, Standard or Higher, and the component where the marks are going. Add the school, the year group and the exam session your child is working towards. This one message is what lets us match a specialist rather than a generalist, and it takes two minutes to write.

  2. 02

    Send the evidence

The last two marked assessments and the most recent mock, with the teacher's annotations visible. Photographs are fine. A tutor who reads marked work before the trial arrives with a hypothesis about where the marks are going, which makes the first hour diagnostic instead of introductory.

  3. 03

Meet the tutor on a free trial

A full lesson, online, with no payment and no card details taken. Watch for whether the tutor works from your child's own errors or from a generic worksheet, and whether your child talks during the hour. A silent student in a trial lesson is a signal worth acting on.

  4. 04

Fix the slot and the cycle

Agree a weekly time that survives a normal Emirates Hills week, including the drive home and the activity that always overruns. Agree what happens between sessions: a short practice set, an error log entry, or a timed paper section. The cycle matters more than the length of the lesson.

  5. 05

Review against the error log, not the mood

Every four to six weeks, look at what the log says rather than at how the sessions felt. If content losses in a named topic have stopped appearing, the work is done and the focus should move. If nothing has changed in six weeks, change the tutor or change the approach rather than extending the booking.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A specialist for the exact course

Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and Applications and Interpretation Higher Level are different syllabuses with different assessment logic. We match on the course, not on the word mathematics, because a tutor strong in modelling and weak in proof will not move an AA Higher Level grade however good the rapport is.

Diagnosis from marked work

Tutoring that starts from the student's own lost marks closes the gap faster than tutoring that starts at the beginning of the syllabus. We ask for marked papers before the trial so the first session can test a hypothesis rather than survey the course from scratch.

Clear academic-honesty boundaries

Exploration support means teaching, topic discussion and written feedback on the student's own drafts. It never means writing, rewriting or correcting mathematics on the submitted page. We state that boundary in writing so the school can see the support was legitimate if it is ever asked.

Online removes the travel constraint

Lessons run over live video with a shared whiteboard. Nobody drives to an Emirates Hills villa, which means the tutor pool is not limited to people who can reach Emirates Living before six, and a six o'clock weekday slot with the right specialist is actually available.

Prices and facts you can check

Every dirham figure on this page is attributed to the provider that published it, with the research date stated. Every regulatory fact is drawn from a UAE government source. Nothing here is a statistic we invented about ourselves, because a figure nobody can check is worth nothing to you.

An honest answer when we cannot help

If no specialist in the right lane is free in your window, we say so and offer a different time rather than substituting a general tutor. A mismatched specialist wastes a term, and a term is the one thing a Diploma student cannot get back.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Emirates Hills: your questions answered

Should my child take IB Mathematics AA or AI for an engineering degree?+

Check the named course pages before deciding, because the requirement is set by the university rather than by the IB. Many engineering, mathematics and physics courses in the UK and Europe specify Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level and will not accept Applications and Interpretation Higher Level in its place. Some UAE universities are more flexible. Read the exact entry requirements for every course on your child's list while they are still in Year 11, save a dated copy, and recheck in the application year, since admissions wording changes between cycles. Choosing by reputation rather than by the published requirement is the error we see most.

How is the IB mathematics exploration marked and what is it worth?+

It carries twenty marks and counts for a fifth of the final grade in all four mathematics courses. Those marks are split across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics, with use of mathematics carrying the largest single block. Students most often lose marks in reflection and personal engagement, because both reward the messy parts of the process and strong students write up only the clean version. Keeping a dated working log from the first week gives the reflection section something true to say. Confirm the current criteria with your school's Diploma coordinator, since the IB revises its subject guides on a rolling cycle.

What is Paper 3 and how should a Higher Level student prepare for it?+

Paper 3 is sat only at Higher Level, in both mathematics routes. It runs for an hour, carries fifty-five marks, and contains two long problems that build from a concrete case towards a general result. It is worth a fifth of the Higher Level grade. Preparation is not additional content, because the syllabus is the same; it is supervised practice at writing a developing argument under time pressure. Students who routinely score well on parts a and b and nothing on part c are telling you exactly what to work on. Confirm the current format against the subject guide your school teaches.

My child is fine in Paper 2 and losing marks in Paper 1. What causes that?+

That split almost always points at non-calculator technique rather than at mathematics knowledge. In Analysis and Approaches, Paper 1 is sat without a graphic display calculator, so it tests exact-value trigonometry held in memory, confident work with surds and indices, and the discipline to leave an answer as a fraction or a logarithm rather than converting it. Students who have leaned on the device for eighteen months lose two or three marks a question to arithmetic and form, not to method. A six to eight week block working only from past Paper 1 questions, timed, with every lost mark logged by error type, is the standard remedy.

Which IB maths topics cost Dubai Diploma students the most marks?+

Five recur. Radians inside calculus questions, where a derivative is only correct in radians and the error is invisible in a single answer. Logarithm laws, taught early and then needed eighteen months later in exponential modelling. Definite integrals where part of the region sits below the axis. Vectors at Higher Level, where students compute a scalar product correctly and never interpret it. And conditional probability answered as though it were unconditional. Each sits at a join between two skills rather than inside one, which is why they survive ordinary revision. A tutor reading marked papers finds three or four of them in an afternoon.

Is Applications and Interpretation Higher Level easier than Analysis Higher Level?+

No, and treating it as the soft option is how students end up in the wrong course. The two reward different things. Analysis Higher Level suits a student who enjoys manipulation and will sit with a proof for twenty minutes. Applications Higher Level suits a student who can read a context, choose a model, run it and then say in a sentence what the result means for the situation described. Applications also carries matrices, graph theory and advanced statistics, which are not light. The real difference for most Emirates Hills families is university fit, not difficulty, so start the decision there.

What can a maths tutor legitimately do with my child's exploration?+

A tutor may teach the content, explain a method the student has not met, discuss whether a chosen topic carries enough mathematics for the level of the course, read the student's own draft and give written feedback against the criteria, and model good structure using a different example. A tutor may not write, rewrite, dictate or fill in any part of it, and may not correct mathematics directly on the page that will be submitted. The exploration is submitted under an authenticity declaration signed by the student and the school, so the consequence of crossing that line falls on the student.

How many hours a week does a Higher Level mathematics student need?+

One well-structured hour a week, used properly, moves more than three unstructured ones. The usual pattern is a weekly session alongside the school's scheme of work, plus a short block of concentrated work on one component when the error log identifies it. Students who are two grades below target in the second year sometimes run two sessions a week for a term, then drop back. What matters more than the count is what happens between sessions: a practice set attempted and logged beats an hour of passive revision. Judge by whether the error pattern changes, not by hours booked.

Does online maths tutoring work when the student needs to show working?+

It works well, because mathematics is the subject where the shared screen is genuinely better than a kitchen table. Both people write on the same annotated whiteboard, the tutor can see each line as it is produced rather than only the finished answer, and the annotated page is saved and sent afterwards so the student revises from the actual working rather than from memory. Students upload photographs of handwritten work before a session so the tutor arrives having already read the method. The one thing to check is a stable connection and a device with a decent camera angle on the paper.

My child moved from IGCSE Extended maths into AA Higher Level and is struggling. Why?+

Because the two syllabuses do not meet cleanly, and this is the steepest routine jump in the Dubai school calendar. IGCSE Extended finishes with the quadratic formula, a light touch of trigonometric graphs and, in some specifications, elementary differentiation. Analysis and Approaches Higher Level assumes proof by induction, binomial expansion with fractional and negative indices, compound angle identities and a working comfort with radians that IGCSE never required. A strong IGCSE candidate can look like a weak Diploma one within a term with nothing having changed except the demand. It is a bridging problem and it responds quickly to targeted work.

What does an IB maths tutor cost per hour in this part of Dubai?+

Published market rates in Dubai, collected from the providers that publish them, run roughly as follows. Budget online tutoring sits between AED 45 and AED 150 an hour. A qualified subject tutor working online sits between AED 150 and AED 300. A named-subject IB or IGCSE specialist sits between AED 200 and AED 450 or above, and premium named tutors have advertised AED 650. In-home visits add a travel premium of roughly AED 180 to AED 500. Those are other providers' published figures from October 2026 research, not our price list. Ask us for a quote and take the free trial first.

How early before the May session should past-paper work start?+

October of the examination year is the sensible start, because the useful cycle takes longer than sitting the paper. Sit it to time in one piece on paper, mark it against the official scheme, then log every lost mark by topic and by error type rather than recording a score. A week later, reattempt cold only the questions lost for content or method. After four papers the log shows whether the problem is pacing, two syllabus topics, or arithmetic under pressure, and each of those has a different remedy. Starting in March leaves time to generate scores but not to act on them.

Do you supply IB past papers, mark schemes or subject guides?+

No, and you should be cautious of anyone who offers to. IB, Cambridge and Pearson assessment materials are copyright, and schools hold them under licence. We reference them, cite the official source, and work from the material your child's school already provides. Ask the Diploma coordinator which past papers and mark schemes the school holds and which online platform the school subscribes to; that is almost always more material than a student can get through. A tutor's value is in what happens after the paper is marked, not in supplying the paper.

Does my child need a particular maths grade for UAE Ministry equivalency?+

The Ministry of Education sets equivalency requirements by curriculum, and the published British-track rule covers IGCSE and A Level rather than the IB. For the British track the requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels. No verified IB points threshold is published in the sources we could read, so check the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority directly. Equivalency is a process your family completes with the Ministry; it is not something a tutoring service performs.

Can one tutor cover both my children if they are on different maths routes?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking, but do not force it. A tutor comfortable across Standard Level in both routes can reasonably hold two students, and families often run back-to-back slots on the same evening. Higher Level is different: Analysis Higher Level and Applications Higher Level are genuinely separate specialisms and few tutors teach both to examination standard. If one child is on Higher Level Analysis and the other on Higher Level Applications, two tutors is the honest answer. Convenience that costs a grade is not convenience.

Start with one marked paper and a free trial

If your child is losing marks in IB Mathematics and you cannot yet say which component is costing them, that is the normal starting point and it is a solvable one. Send the course and level, the last two marked assessments, the school and year, and two evening windows that work in an Emirates Hills week. We will match a tutor in the right lane, not a general maths tutor, and the first lesson is free so you can judge the hour before you commit to anything. Lessons run online over live video with a shared whiteboard, which is what makes the right specialist available at the time you actually need.
