IB & IGCSE in Al Garhoud

The honest answer to "does anyone near me know this syllabus" starts with naming the syllabus

Parents in Al Garhoud searching for an IGCSE science tutor are usually asking whether anyone reachable actually understands the course their child is sitting. It is the right question, and it cannot be answered until the course is named. IGCSE science is not one qualification. It is a family of them, and a Dubai school may enter pupils for any of seven realistic combinations across two boards. A tutor who knows Cambridge separate Physics inside out is not automatically the right tutor for a Pearson Edexcel Double Award candidate, and six weeks of mismatched past papers is six weeks gone.

Here is the shape of it. Cambridge runs separate Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625; Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 as a double award covering all three; Combined Science 0653 as a single award; and Physical Science 0652 covering chemistry and physics only. Pearson Edexcel runs separate Biology 4BI1, Chemistry 4CH1 and Physics 4PH1; Science Double Award 4SD0; and Human Biology 4HB1. Each of these has its own paper structure, its own content depth, its own tiering arrangement where one exists, and its own practical or Alternative to Practical component. Schools around Al Garhoud, Festival City and Oud Metha use different ones, and some use more than one for different cohorts.

That is the first thing a competent tutor will ask you, and the first thing to be suspicious about if they do not. The second question is which papers your child is entered for, because a route like Co-ordinated Sciences compresses three subjects into a double award, meaning the content is broader and shallower than separate sciences and the revision strategy has to be different. A pupil who prepares for 0654 by working through separate-science past papers will spend time on material that is not on their syllabus while missing the breadth the actual papers demand.

The third is the practical component. Most IGCSE science routes assess experimental skills, and in the UAE many candidates sit an Alternative to Practical written paper rather than a laboratory examination. That paper tests the same reasoning, reading apparatus diagrams, identifying variables, spotting sources of error, interpreting a results table, but it tests it in writing, and it is a distinct skill that is routinely under-prepared. Confirm with the school which route your child's centre uses, because it changes what the last six weeks should look like.

Lessons here are delivered one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. For a subject family this fragmented that matters practically rather than philosophically: matching on geography means accepting whoever teaches science within a short drive of the airport perimeter, while matching online means finding someone who teaches your child's specific code every week.

Key Stage 3 and MYP science groundwork

The years before IGCSE decide which science route a pupil is placed on. Schools look at numeracy within science, the ability to handle units and prefixes, graph work, and whether a pupil can write an explanation rather than a description. A Year 9 pupil who cannot rearrange a formula or read a scale accurately is a candidate for a combined or coordinated route whether or not that reflects their ceiling.

Schools around Al Garhoud and Oud Metha often make the separate-versus-coordinated decision in the spring of Year 9 on internal evidence. Families who want three separate sciences are far better served by two terms of Year 9 numeracy and explanation work than by a challenge to the decision after it has been made.

Cambridge IGCSE separate sciences and Co-ordinated Sciences

Separate Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 each run Core and Extended routes with their own paper structures and an experimental component. Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 covers all three as a double award, and Combined Science 0653 as a single award. The content overlap is substantial but the depth and the question styles differ, which is why the code matters more than the subject name.

UAE candidates sit the June and November series. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and publishes a separate timetable for each, warning that using the wrong zone's timetable is the candidate's risk. Take the dates from your school's exams officer and confirm the live syllabus on cambridgeinternational.org.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences

Separate Biology 4BI1, Chemistry 4CH1 and Physics 4PH1, plus Science Double Award 4SD0 and Human Biology 4HB1. Edexcel's structure differs from Cambridge's in paper arrangement and in how practical skills are assessed within the written papers, so past-paper work does not transfer cleanly between the boards even where the content looks identical.

Pearson runs International GCSE in May/June and November. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results went to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Provisional timetables are revised, so open the live PDF on qualifications.pearson.com.

POST-16Ages 16-17 · Year 12 / DP1

The bridge into A Level or IB Diploma sciences

A coordinated or combined route does not close off post-16 sciences, but it does change the bridging work needed. Students arriving in A Level Chemistry or Diploma Physics from a double award have met the concepts and not the depth, and the first term is where that shows. Six to ten weeks of targeted summer work on the specific topics their route treated lightly is the efficient fix.

Several schools in and around Al Garhoud and Festival City offer both A Level and IB Diploma routes after Year 11, so the bridging target differs by school and sometimes by sibling. Check the sixth form's own entry expectations for each science in writing before assuming a double award is sufficient.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Science tutoring is efficient when it targets a named paper and a named weakness. These are the strands Al Garhoud families most often buy time on, across the biology, chemistry and physics content of the IGCSE routes.

Biology: transport, respiration and photosynthesis

Core and Extended

High-yield content that is reliably examined and reliably half-learned. Marks go on explaining a process in sequence rather than naming it, and candidates lose them by describing what happens without giving the reason the question asked for.

Biology: genetics, inheritance and variation

Core and Extended

Punnett square questions are mechanical and should be free marks; they are lost to careless labelling of gametes and to confusing genotype with phenotype in the final answer. Extended content on variation and selection needs precise use of terminology.

Biology: human physiology and homeostasis

Core and Extended

Negative feedback questions require a loop described in order, and partial answers earn partial marks. Students who learn diagrams without the sequence tend to produce answers that contain the right words in the wrong causal order.

Chemistry: moles, formulae and equations

Extended priority

The quantitative spine of the subject and the single best use of early tutoring hours. An insecure mole concept corrupts titration, yield and concentration work for the rest of the course, and it is fixable in three or four focused sessions.

Chemistry: rates, energetics and reversible reactions

Core and Extended

Collision theory explanations are marked for the named factor and its effect, not for enthusiasm. Le Chatelier-style reversible reaction questions want a direction and a reason, and the reason is where the marks sit.

Chemistry: organic and separation techniques

Core and Extended

Homologous series, functional groups and the standard reactions are learnable and should be secure. Separation technique questions reward a candidate who can justify the method chosen from the properties of the mixture rather than recite a list.

Physics: forces, motion and moments

Core and Extended

Free-body reasoning and moments questions are lost to diagrams drawn carelessly rather than to misunderstood physics. Every subsequent line of working inherits an omitted force, so the diagram is the mark-bearing step.

Physics: electricity and circuits

Core and Extended

The most common loss point in IGCSE physics. Series and parallel reasoning, potential difference versus current, and component behaviour appear as questions requiring argument rather than formula substitution, and roughly half the available marks go to explanation.

Physics: waves, light and sound

Core and Extended

Ray diagrams must be drawn to a convention and are marked against it. Refraction and total internal reflection questions reward accurate construction; candidates who sketch freehand lose marks they understood perfectly well.

Experimental skills and the Alternative to Practical paper

All routes

A distinct skill and the most under-prepared component across every science route. It tests reading apparatus diagrams, identifying independent and dependent variables, naming a source of error and suggesting an improvement, all in writing and under time pressure.

Graph work, tables and data interpretation

All routes

Plotting accurately, choosing a sensible scale, drawing a line of best fit and reading a value from a curve. These carry marks on every science paper, transfer across all three subjects, and are usually quicker to fix than any content topic.

Command terms and answer length

All routes

State, describe, explain, suggest, calculate and compare each demand a different answer shape. The cheapest grade movement in the final term is teaching a candidate to read the command term and write the required number of points, rather than writing more.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Al Garhoud families buy IGCSE science support, all delivered online over live video, one-to-one.

One science, weekly

A single 60-minute lesson a week on the science that is costing the most marks, usually physics or chemistry. The most efficient purchase for a pupil whose other two sciences are secure, and the format that keeps the week manageable. The lesson tracks the school's own sequence rather than marching through a textbook.

  • Syllabus code confirmed before the first lesson
  • One past-paper question marked against the published mark scheme each week
  • Alternative to Practical technique built in rather than left to the end

Three sciences in rotation

One lesson a week rotating between biology, chemistry and physics, usually with two tutors rather than one, because few individuals teach all three at Extended depth convincingly. Suits a coordinated or double award candidate whose weakness is spread rather than concentrated, and keeps the total weekly load to a single session.

  • Rotation driven by the school's sequence and the last test result
  • Shared written notes so the plan stays coherent across tutors
  • Graph work and data interpretation taught once and applied to all three

Pre-paper intensive

Two or three sessions a week for six to ten weeks before a June or November series, entirely past-paper driven and board-specific. The sequence is a timed paper, a line-by-line review against the mark scheme, then repair of the named loss points. The Alternative to Practical paper is treated as its own block within this.

  • Papers from the correct board and route only
  • Command-term technique drilled explicitly
  • A full mock in the week before the first paper

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Garhoud

01

Which IGCSE science is your child actually taking?

This is the section to read before any other. The phrase IGCSE science covers at least seven distinct entries, and the differences are not cosmetic. They affect how many papers a pupil sits, how deep the content goes, what grade is available, and what past papers are useful. A tutor who starts teaching before this is settled is guessing, and so are you.

The practical step is one email to the school's exams officer asking for the syllabus code and the paper numbers your child is entered for. Most schools answer within a day. The codes are short and unambiguous, and once you have them every other decision becomes simple: you can find the live syllabus on the board's own site, you can tell a tutor exactly what you need, and you can check that the past papers being used are the right ones.

The route also changes the shape of the problem. Separate sciences give depth in each subject and three sets of papers to prepare. Co-ordinated Sciences compresses all three into a double award, which means broader coverage at shallower depth and a different revision strategy: a candidate who knows a few topics very well and others not at all is more exposed on a coordinated paper than on a separate one, because the paper samples across everything. Combined Science as a single award narrows further again.

The table below sets the routes side by side. Treat it as an orientation rather than a specification: paper structures are revised, and the authoritative source is the live syllabus document on cambridgeinternational.org or qualifications.pearson.com plus your own school's entry information. What the table is for is making sure the conversation with a prospective tutor starts in the right place.

Who can actually teach three sciences well, and who cannot

  • Ask which science the tutor teaches most weeks, then ask about the one named last
  • Two tutors with a shared plan often beats one generalist for a double award
  • Transferable skills, graph work and command terms, are one block not three
  • Buy the subject that is costing marks, not a three-subject package

The second honest answer on this page is about the tutor rather than the syllabus. A great many people can teach one IGCSE science to Extended standard. Rather fewer can teach two. Very few can teach all three convincingly at that depth, and a tutor who claims all three without qualification is worth probing rather than dismissing. The probe is simple: ask which of the three they teach most weeks, and ask the same question about the one they mention last.

This matters most for coordinated and double award candidates, because their weakness is usually spread across subjects rather than concentrated in one. The instinct is to find a single tutor for the whole award. The better arrangement is often two tutors with a shared plan, each covering what they teach every week, with the graph work, data interpretation and command-term technique taught once by whichever of them does it best and applied across all three. That is cheaper than it sounds, because those transferable skills are a single block rather than three.

For separate science candidates the calculation is different. A pupil losing marks in physics and secure in biology and chemistry needs one tutor for one subject, and the honest advice is to buy that rather than a three-subject package. Packages are sold because they are easier to sell, not because a pupil needs them. A single weekly lesson on the subject that is actually costing marks, plus independent past-paper work in the other two, is usually the right purchase.

Availability shapes this too, and it is worth stating plainly rather than implying unlimited supply. Biology and chemistry coverage at IGCSE level is comfortable. Physics at Extended depth is tighter, particularly in the contested 16:30 to 17:30 slots. Where no UAE-based tutor covers a specific combination, the tutor may be based elsewhere teaching into Gulf Standard Time, which is disclosed rather than concealed. Parts of this market route UAE enquiries to non-UAE phone numbers without saying where the teaching happens; stating the position is a low bar and worth clearing.

03

The Alternative to Practical paper nobody prepares for

  • Name a specific source of error; human error scores nothing
  • The suggested improvement must address the error actually named
  • Table headings need units, every time
  • Line of best fit goes through the data, not through the end points
  • Book the technique block six to eight weeks out, not in the last fortnight

Every IGCSE science route assesses experimental skills, and in UAE centres a large share of candidates sit an Alternative to Practical written paper rather than a laboratory examination. It is the most predictable source of lost marks in the whole science entry, for a straightforward reason: it is nobody's priority. Content revision feels like revision. Practical paper technique feels like a detail, right up to the point where a candidate loses a dozen marks on it.

What the paper actually asks is narrow and very learnable. Read an apparatus diagram and say what it is for. Identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables in a described experiment. Complete a results table with correct headings and units. Plot and interpret a graph. Name a specific source of error, not a vague one, and suggest an improvement that would actually address it. Evaluate whether a conclusion is supported by the data provided. That list is the whole paper, and it barely changes between series.

The errors are equally predictable. Candidates write that the experiment was affected by human error, which earns nothing because it names no mechanism. They give an improvement that does not address the error they just named. They omit units from a table heading. They draw a line of best fit through the first and last points rather than through the data. All of these are habits, and habits respond to four or five sessions of deliberate practice better than to any amount of content revision.

The scheduling advice is simple: put the practical paper block six to eight weeks out, not in the final fortnight. By then the content revision is competing with every other subject, and a technique block is the first thing to be dropped. Six weeks out it is still possible to build a habit, and the habit survives the final rush. Confirm with the school which component your child's centre uses, because it determines whether this block is essential or irrelevant.

04

Where IGCSE science marks are lost, subject by subject

Generic revision advice is not much use because the losses are specific and they repeat. What follows is the pattern across the three sciences as it shows up on marked scripts, and it is the list a tutor should be able to produce from your child's own paper rather than from a general impression.

In biology, the losses are linguistic more than conceptual. Questions ask for an explanation and receive a description. Processes are named rather than sequenced. Genetics questions, which should be free marks, are lost to careless labelling and to answering with a genotype where a phenotype was asked for. A pupil who knows the biology and writes in the wrong register can be two grades below their understanding.

In chemistry, the losses are quantitative. The mole concept is the hinge: insecure there and titration, yield, concentration and empirical formula work all become unreliable. Balancing equations under time pressure is the other reliable loss, along with rate questions answered with enthusiasm rather than with the named factor and its effect on collision frequency.

In physics, the losses are procedural. Diagrams drawn carelessly, so that every later line of working inherits a missing force. Ray diagrams sketched freehand when the mark scheme wants a construction. Circuit explanations that substitute into a formula where the question asked for reasoning about potential difference. And across all three subjects, the command term ignored, which is the single most common and most fixable error on any science paper.

Core, Extended and the grade ceiling in each science

Several IGCSE science routes are tiered, and the tier caps the grade. On Cambridge separate sciences, Core candidates sit a different paper combination from Extended candidates and the available grade range differs, with Extended giving access to the top grades. The same logic applies across the coordinated and combined routes. Pearson Edexcel's science entries are structured differently, and some are untiered, which is one more reason the code matters before anything else.

The decision is usually made by the school, often in Year 9 or early Year 10, on internal evidence. The argument for the lower tier is genuine: a pupil placed above their level sits harder papers, scores less on each, and can finish below where a confident lower-tier candidate would have landed. The question is always whether a particular pupil is at their ceiling or whether two or three specific weaknesses, typically numeracy within science, graph work and explanation register, are holding down a result otherwise within reach.

That is diagnosable in a single sitting. Give the pupil a lower-tier paper and a higher-tier paper on the same afternoon and look at where the marks fall rather than at the totals. A pupil who scores well on the first and collapses on identifiable question types in the second has a repairable gap. A pupil losing marks evenly across both is at their level, and the honest advice is to secure a strong grade on the lower route rather than gamble.

The post-16 consequence is worth knowing before the decision is made rather than after. Sixth forms set their own entry expectations for A Level and Diploma sciences, and a coordinated or combined route does not close them off but does change the bridging work required. Ask the sixth form, in writing, what they expect for each science. That answer, obtained in Year 9 or 10, is worth more than any amount of tutoring bought in Year 11 to repair a decision nobody checked.

06

What science tuition costs around Al Garhoud, and what you can verify yourself

Start with what a parent can check independently, because that is the part no tutoring page controls. Published Dubai rates are public. Budget online tutoring is advertised from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik quoting AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from about AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor working online is quoted between AED 150 and 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. In-home one-to-one visits, which carry the tutor's travel, are quoted at AED 180 to 500, and Bestimate's 2026 rate table shows a common range of AED 180 to 350. IB and IGCSE specialists sit at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, and premium named tutors higher, with BartyED at AED 650.

For IGCSE science, the qualified subject tutor band is usually the right one. The specialist premium earns its keep in Diploma Higher Level work and in narrow combinations; for a Year 11 candidate on a known syllabus code with identifiable loss points, what you are buying is diagnosis and board-specific past-paper work, and that sits comfortably in the AED 150 to 300 range. Where families overspend is in buying three subjects when one is the problem, and in buying hours before the syllabus code has been confirmed.

Monthly shapes are easier to budget than hourly rates. Packages advertised in the Dubai market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market. Set that against school fees, which KHDA confirmed in May 2026 would not rise in Dubai for 2026-27 under the emirate's second economic incentives package.

Every figure above belongs to the provider or dataset that published it; none is IB Gram's price, and no fixed price list appears on these pages because the rate depends on level and session length. What is fixed is that the first lesson is a free trial, so the judgement about whether a tutor knows your child's specific syllabus is made by watching one lesson rather than by reading a profile.

07

The exam series, the practical component and counting backwards

UAE candidates sit the June and November series. Cambridge runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level in a June series and a November series, and the February and March series is offered to India only, so a Garhoud family planning a resit is planning for November rather than for the spring. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and publishes a separate timetable for each, with explicit guidance that using the wrong zone's version is the candidate's own risk and that Cambridge cannot accept responsibility for a missed exam on that basis.

Pearson's pattern is published on their support pages and is easier to cite. International GCSE runs in May/June and November; the November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables well ahead, including for the November series ahead of you, and those get revised, so the live PDF is the only version worth planning around.

Working backwards from the papers, the science-specific milestones are these. The syllabus code and paper entries should be confirmed in writing by the start of Year 11 at the latest. The content should be covered once before the school mocks, usually in January or February for a June series. The mock scripts should be reviewed line by line in the six weeks after, which is the single most productive tutoring block in the whole year. The practical or Alternative to Practical technique block belongs six to eight weeks before the papers. And the final fortnight is for timed papers from the correct board and route, not for new content.

For a resit, the planning happens in the summer. A November entry gives roughly four months, and the efficient use of them is to work from the papers that lost marks rather than to re-teach the course. A candidate who dropped a grade on the Alternative to Practical paper and on explanation register in biology does not need the syllabus again; they need those two things repaired, which is a materially shorter and cheaper piece of work.

08

Permits, approvals and claims worth checking

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists the route as private tutor licensing, with no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the app, website or e-services. Anyone tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so ignore any page quoting an amount.

Two claims deserve a check. The first is approval by a regulator. KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai and issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises, which is a specific thing with a specific process. IB Gram holds no such permit, operates no UAE premises, and claims no accreditation from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. A page describing its tutors as approved by one of those bodies is describing something that does not exist.

The second is the offer to supply syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes as downloads. These are the boards' copyright material. The right behaviour is to reference them and link the official source, which is what this page does, and the wrong behaviour is to host them. A provider distributing board material is telling you something about how carefully they handle other rules too.

Beyond that, the useful checks are the free ones. Email the school for the syllabus code. Read the school's inspection report on the regulator's own site. Run the free trial as an assessment by sending a marked script beforehand and asking the tutor to name the specific loss points. A tutor who can do that in one lesson has demonstrated the only thing that matters, and no rating on any page substitutes for it.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Garhoud

Online delivery means one science specialist serves the whole Deira-side cluster. These are the neighbourhoods Al Garhoud families book from, with the detail that bears on a science session.

Al Garhoud

Small and low-rise between the Creek, Garhoud Bridge and the airport perimeter. Short school runs, but the bridge approaches are slowest exactly when a Year 11 pupil becomes free, which is why slot reliability matters more here than proximity.

Dubai Festival City

Adjacent across Al Rebat Street, with its own school. Pupils here often share bus routes with Garhoud, so the usable science slot and the syllabus questions are frequently identical for both.

Deira

Older and denser, served by the Green Line. A quiet table for a 90-minute science session is harder to find in a smaller flat, which is easier to solve with a headset than with a visitor.

Oud Metha

Across Al Maktoum Bridge, where many Garhoud secondary pupils study. Several long-established British-curriculum schools here enter separate sciences, so the route question is settled differently than in some Garhoud schools.

Al Karama

Dense apartment living with many secondary-age pupils in British and Indian curriculum schools. Consecutive evening slots for two siblings are common, and the science route often differs between them.

Al Mamzar

Northern coastal Deira with the longest bus loops to the Garhoud and Oud Metha schools. A fifty-minute afternoon run pushes the first workable science slot towards 17:15.

Al Qusais

Large corridor towards Sharjah with several schools of its own, and a wider curriculum mix. Families here are the most likely to be on a different science route from their Garhoud neighbours.

Hor Al Anz and Al Nahda

Inner and outer Deira, with school destinations split across both sides of the Creek. The syllabus code, not the postcode, determines what the tutoring plan looks like.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Garhoud

Al Garhoud and Dubai Festival City

The immediate ring. Between them these schools run British, American and IB continuum provision, which is why a single Garhoud apartment block can hold pupils on three different science routes sitting in the same June. The entry codes are the thing to establish first in every case.

Schools are named as context for the neighbourhood's education market; IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from or connection with any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Email the school for the syllabus code

One message to the exams officer asking for the code and the paper numbers your child is entered for, plus whether the centre uses a practical or Alternative to Practical component. Most schools reply within a day, and nothing useful can be planned before that answer arrives.

  2. 02

Send the code, the script and the school

The syllabus code, a photograph of a recent marked science test and the year group. With those three things the first lesson becomes a diagnosis rather than an introduction, and the past papers used are the right ones from the start.

  3. 03

Free trial run as an assessment

No payment. The tutor should finish able to name two or three specific loss points: an explanation answered as a description, an unbalanced equation under time pressure, a free-body diagram missing a force. General reassurance is a failed trial.

  4. 04

Buy the subject that is costing marks

Usually one science rather than three. A single weekly lesson on the weakest subject plus independent past-paper work in the other two is normally the right purchase; packages exist because they are easier to sell, not because pupils need them.

  5. 05

Book the practical technique block six to eight weeks out

Four or five sessions on the Alternative to Practical question types, scheduled before the final rush rather than inside it. It is the most predictable source of lost marks across every science route and the cheapest one to repair.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The syllabus code comes first

Seven realistic IGCSE science routes exist across Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel, with different papers, depths and grade ceilings. Confirming the code with the school before anything is planned is free, takes a day, and prevents weeks of past-paper work on the wrong specification.

An honest answer about who teaches what

Few tutors teach all three sciences convincingly at Extended depth. Asking which one they teach most weeks, and which they named last, is a better filter than any profile. Two tutors with a shared plan often beats one generalist for a double award.

The practical paper treated as a real component

Alternative to Practical technique is the most predictable loss across every science route and the first thing dropped in the final rush. A six-week block on the specific question types is cheap, learnable and rarely offered by anyone else.

The slot holds every week

No Creek crossing, no Garhoud Bridge delay, no twenty minutes lost at the start of a 17:00 lesson. Online delivery removes the journey from both sides, which is how the narrow Al Garhoud afternoon window becomes usable at all.

Market rates published and attributed

Three of the six most visible competitor pages in this search publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars. Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider or dataset that published it, so a quote can be judged against its band.

Boards linked, not reproduced

Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes are the boards' copyright material. This page cites and links the official sources rather than hosting them, and points you to your school's exams officer for the authoritative entry information.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Garhoud: your questions answered

How do I find out which IGCSE science syllabus my child in Al Garhoud is sitting?+

Email the school's exams officer and ask for the syllabus code and the paper numbers your child is entered for, plus whether the centre uses a practical or an Alternative to Practical component. Most schools answer within a day. The codes are unambiguous: Cambridge separate sciences are 0610, 0620 and 0625, Co-ordinated Sciences is 0654 and Combined Science 0653, while Pearson Edexcel runs 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and Science Double Award 4SD0. Once you have the code you can find the live syllabus on the board's own site and be certain any past papers used are the right ones.

What is the difference between Co-ordinated Sciences and separate sciences?+

Co-ordinated Sciences covers biology, chemistry and physics as a double award, giving two grades, with broader coverage at shallower depth than three separate courses. Separate sciences give three grades and full depth in each. The practical consequence for revision is significant: a coordinated paper samples across all three subjects, so a candidate who knows some topics very well and others not at all is more exposed than on a separate-science paper. It is not an easier route, it is a differently shaped one, and the revision strategy has to match.

Can one tutor teach all three IGCSE sciences to Extended standard?+

Some can, but fewer than claim to, and it is worth probing rather than assuming. Ask which of the three they teach most weeks, then ask the same question about the one they mentioned last; the second answer is the informative one. For a coordinated or double award candidate whose weakness is spread across subjects, two tutors with a shared plan often works better, with the transferable skills, graph work, data interpretation and command terms, taught once by whichever does it best and applied to all three.

Does IB Gram send a science tutor to a home in Al Garhoud?+

No. Lessons for UAE families are delivered one-to-one over live video, and IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. The practical argument is the pool. Matching on geography means accepting whoever teaches science within a short drive of the airport perimeter, which is a small set for a specific syllabus code. Matching online means finding a tutor who teaches your child's exact specification every week. Published in-home rates in Dubai also run AED 180 to 500 an hour against AED 150 to 300 online.

What is the Alternative to Practical paper and how do we prepare for it?+

It is a written paper that assesses experimental skills in place of a laboratory examination, used by many UAE centres. It asks candidates to read apparatus diagrams, identify independent, dependent and controlled variables, complete a results table with correct headings and units, plot and interpret a graph, name a specific source of error and suggest an improvement that addresses it, and judge whether a conclusion is supported by the data. Four or five sessions of deliberate practice, booked six to eight weeks before the papers, is the whole preparation, and it is the component most often skipped.

Why does my daughter lose marks in biology when she knows the content?+

Almost always register rather than knowledge. Biology mark schemes reward explanation, and a large share of candidates give descriptions: they name a process without sequencing it or without giving the reason the question asked for. Genetics questions, which should be reliable marks, go the same way through careless gamete labelling or answering with a genotype where a phenotype was wanted. A pupil who understands the biology and writes in the wrong register can sit two grades below their understanding. Rewriting past answers against the mark scheme wording fixes it in two or three sessions.

Which IGCSE science do Dubai pupils need the most help with?+

Physics, and within physics the electricity and circuits topic. The reason is that the questions require reasoning about potential difference, series and parallel behaviour and component characteristics rather than formula substitution, and roughly half the available marks go to explanation. Chemistry is second, and there the problem is almost always quantitative: an insecure mole concept propagates into titration, yield and concentration work for the rest of the course. Biology produces the fewest requests and the most avoidable losses, because the gap there is in how answers are written.

How much does an IGCSE science tutor cost around Al Garhoud?+

The qualified subject tutor band is the relevant one, quoted in Dubai at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. Below that, budget online tutoring is advertised from about AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik at AED 45 to 65. Above it, IB and IGCSE specialists are quoted at AED 200 to 450 and more, with TutorChase at AED 270. In-home visits, which carry travel inside the rate, run AED 180 to 500. Those are market rates published by those providers, not IB Gram's price, and the first lesson here is a free trial.

Should we book all three sciences or just the weakest one?+

Usually just the weakest one. A single weekly lesson on the science that is actually costing marks, combined with independent past-paper work in the other two, is the efficient purchase for most separate-science candidates. Three-subject packages are sold because they are simpler to sell rather than because pupils need them, and they triple the weekly load at a point when time is the scarce resource. The exception is a coordinated or double award candidate whose weakness is genuinely spread, where a rotation across the three with a shared plan makes sense.

Does Core or Extended science change what grade my child can get?+

On the tiered Cambridge routes, yes. Core and Extended candidates sit different paper combinations and the available grade range differs, with Extended giving access to the top grades. Pearson Edexcel structures its science entries differently and some are untiered, which is one more reason to get the code from the school first. The decision is usually made internally in Year 9 or early Year 10. Whether a pupil is genuinely at their ceiling is diagnosable in one sitting by comparing performance on a lower-tier and a higher-tier paper and looking at where the marks fall.

Which exam series do IGCSE science candidates in Dubai sit?+

June and November. Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and the February and March series is offered to India only, so there is no spring resit route for a pupil in Dubai. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November; the November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones with separate timetables and warns that using the wrong one is the candidate's risk, so take the dates from your school's exams officer.

My son has eight weeks before his science papers. What should we spend them on?+

Timed past papers from the correct board and route, reviewed line by line against the mark scheme, plus a block on the Alternative to Practical or practical component if his centre uses one. Not new content. The highest-yield items in eight weeks are command-term discipline, which is roughly an hour's work with permanent effect, graph and data interpretation, which transfers across all three sciences, and the two or three named loss points his last script actually shows. Re-teaching the syllabus in eight weeks achieves less than repairing four specific habits.

If he does Co-ordinated Sciences, can he still take A Level or Diploma sciences?+

It does not close the door, but it changes the bridging work. A double award candidate has met the concepts at less depth than a separate-science candidate, and the gap shows in the first term of a post-16 course. Ask the sixth form in writing what they expect for each science, and get that answer in Year 9 or 10 rather than after the entry decision. Where the route is already settled, six to ten weeks of targeted summer work on the specific topics the double award treated lightly is the efficient fix.

Do science tutors working with Al Garhoud families need a UAE permit?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists the application as private tutor licensing, with no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published, so disregard any figure quoted on a tutoring site.

Can a tutor give us past papers and mark schemes to work from?+

A tutor should direct you to the official source rather than supply copies. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the boards' copyright material, and distributing them is not something a careful provider does. The right behaviour is to cite and link cambridgeinternational.org or qualifications.pearson.com, and to point you to your school's exams officer for the authoritative entry and timetable information. A provider hosting board material is telling you something about how it handles other rules too.

What time can a science lesson start for a pupil living in Al Garhoud?+

On a club-free day, 16:15 or 16:30. Secondary schools in and around Al Garhoud, Festival City and Oud Metha finish between 14:00 and 15:00, activity clubs extend two or three afternoons to about 16:00, and a bus loop through Garhoud, Al Rigga or Al Mamzar adds twenty-five to fifty minutes. On club days 17:15 is more realistic. Thursday suits a longer session because Friday mornings start later at most schools, and Saturday morning is the only window where a full timed paper plus a proper review fits comfortably.

Get the code, then get the tutor

The question behind a search for an IGCSE science tutor in Al Garhoud is whether anyone reachable knows your child's syllabus, and it is unanswerable until the syllabus is named. Send one email to the school's exams officer asking for the code, the paper numbers and whether the centre uses a practical or Alternative to Practical component. Then send that code with a photograph of a recent marked script. The first lesson is free and is used to name the two or three places marks are actually going. Buy the science that is costing marks rather than a package, and book the practical technique block six to eight weeks out.
