IB Physics Tutor in Al Garhoud

Most parents searching for an IB physics tutor in Al Garhoud are asking one question underneath the words: is there anybody near me who actually knows this syllabus? The honest answer for Higher Level physics in a small Creek-side neighbourhood is that the local pool is thin. Lessons here are delivered one-to-one over live video, which is how an Al Garhoud student gets a Diploma physics specialist rather than the nearest available science graduate.

IB & IGCSE in Al Garhoud

The real question is not proximity, it is whether anyone nearby can teach HL physics

Al Garhoud is a small neighbourhood. A few hundred metres of low-rise villas and apartment blocks between Garhoud Bridge, Al Rebat Street and the airport fence. Search for an IB physics tutor in Al Garhoud and the results will mostly be agencies in other parts of the city that list the area name because listing area names is cheap. The question a parent is actually asking gets lost in that: not who is nearby, but who can sit down with a Diploma physics student and know what the mark scheme wants.

Those are different questions because Diploma physics at Higher Level is a narrow specialism. A general science tutor can teach IGCSE physics competently. Diploma Higher Level asks for something else: fluency across the whole guide, comfort with the data booklet, the ability to look at a six-mark extended-response answer and say precisely which marking point is missing, and enough experience of the Scientific Investigation to coach a student through designing their own without ever touching the writing. Physics also carries more mathematical load than any other Diploma science, so a tutor who cannot handle calculus-adjacent manipulation will stall on the mechanics and the fields topics.

Count the pool honestly. Dubai's private sector reported 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25, with the IB accounting for 7 per cent of enrolment. Diploma physics is taken by a minority of that minority, Higher Level by a fraction again, and the teachers qualified to teach it are overwhelmingly employed full time by the schools running the programme. Restrict the search to people willing to drive to Al Garhoud at 17:00 and the pool shrinks to something close to chance. Several of the most visible agency pages in this search quote a US dollar rate, publish no area detail at all, and route UAE parents to a non-UAE phone number. That is what the local supply problem looks like from the outside.

So the structure of this page is a verification exercise rather than a sales pitch. It sets out what a Diploma physics specialist has to be able to do, how to test for it inside a single free trial lesson, what the Dubai market charges across each provider model, and what IB Gram will tell you if no specialist is free for the slot you want. Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video; IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. For a subject this narrow, that is the mechanism that widens the pool rather than a compromise on it. One further point before the detail. The cost of getting this wrong in physics is not measured in dirhams but in terms. A Diploma student who spends DP1 with a tutor who re-teaches content the student already understands arrives in DP2 with the original problem and one year fewer in which to fix it. Diagnosis is the expensive skill and the one worth testing for, which is why the first two sections of this page are a checklist rather than a description of a service.

At a glance

  • Diploma physics carries the heaviest mathematical load of the three Diploma sciences
  • Higher Level adds extension content on top of the common core, not a separate course
  • The Scientific Investigation is internally assessed on four criteria totalling 24 marks
  • A tutor who cannot name a missing marking point on a past-paper answer has not diagnosed anything
  • Availability for HL physics is tight; ask about it before you plan a term around it
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Garhoud families reach Diploma physics by three different routes, and the starting point changes what the first term of tutoring has to achieve.

MYPAges 14-16 · MYP 4-5

MYP Sciences into Diploma Physics

MYP Sciences is assessed on criteria rather than on content coverage, which means a student can arrive in DP1 with strong investigative skills and thin mechanics. The gap is usually quantitative: rearranging formulae, handling units and prefixes, and working with graphs where the gradient means something physical. Six to eight weeks of bridging work in the summer before DP1 costs less than a term of catching up inside it.

Deira International School runs the full IB continuum, so some Al Garhoud students move from MYP 5 into DP1 inside the same building and the same expectations. Students arriving from a British-curriculum Year 11 nearby meet a different gap, usually the reverse: strong content recall and weak experimental design.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1-DP2

IB Diploma Physics, Standard Level

Standard Level covers the common core across the guide's themes, with the same Scientific Investigation requirement as Higher Level. The usual tutoring need is pace rather than depth: SL physics is often taken alongside two other sciences or a heavy Higher Level maths load, and the time pressure shows up as half-finished past papers rather than misunderstood content.

For an Al Garhoud student, SL physics is frequently the third science or the pragmatic choice alongside HL maths. That combination is worth planning for: the mathematics is shared, so a tutor covering both can cut total hours. Confirm the current assessment structure on ibo.org, since the guide has been revised.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1-DP2

IB Diploma Physics, Higher Level

Higher Level takes the common core and extends it, adding depth in fields, induction, rotational and quantum content, and longer extended-response questions. This is the route that creates the specialist scarcity. The tutoring need is diagnostic: a student who understands the physics but writes answers that miss marking points needs mark-scheme work, not re-teaching, and the two are easy to confuse.

HL physics is the standard prerequisite for engineering at most universities UAE students apply to, so it is rarely dropped even when it is the hardest subject on the timetable. That makes availability of a genuine HL specialist the binding constraint for a Garhoud family, which is why this page treats it as the main question.

POST-DPAges 17-18 · DP2

University entry and the physics prerequisite

Engineering and physical-science departments typically ask for HL physics alongside Mathematics Analysis and Approaches rather than Applications and Interpretation. Students who chose AI in DP1 sometimes discover the mismatch in DP2, when changing is no longer simple. Checking the departmental requirement in writing before the subject choice is locked is the cheapest piece of advice on this page.

UAE Ministry of Education equivalency rules are published per curriculum track and the IB figure is not something to take from a tutoring page. Verify the requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority, and treat equivalency as a process the family completes, not something a tutor performs.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Diploma physics is one subject with a small number of well-known failure points. Tutoring is efficient when it attacks those and wasteful when it marches through the guide from the first page.

Kinematics and dynamics

SL and HL

Suvat equations are rarely the problem. Free-body diagrams drawn wrongly are, and every subsequent line of working inherits the error. Students also lose marks by treating a deceleration as a positive quantity and by failing to state the direction they have taken as positive.

Work, energy and momentum

SL and HL

Conservation arguments are worth easy marks and are often skipped in favour of a longer force-based method. The common error is applying conservation of mechanical energy to a collision that is not elastic, which the question usually signals clearly.

Thermal physics and gas laws

SL and HL

Specific heat capacity and latent heat calculations are mechanical once set out, but students mix units of mass and forget that the temperature change in kelvin equals the change in degrees Celsius. Ideal gas questions punish careless pressure units.

Waves, superposition and resonance

SL and HL

Path difference and phase difference are routinely conflated. Standing wave questions need a diagram, and single-slit and double-slit distinctions are tested more precisely than most students expect from classwork alone.

Electricity and circuits

SL and HL

The most common loss point across the whole course. Potential dividers, internal resistance and non-ohmic components appear in questions requiring the student to reason about a circuit rather than recall a formula. Half the marks go to explanation, not calculation.

Fields: gravitational and electric

SL core, HL extended

Sign conventions for potential and potential energy cause more errors than the physics does. HL extends into field and potential gradients and the mathematical treatment, which is where the mathematical load becomes the limiting factor for many students.

Magnetism and electromagnetic induction

SL core, HL extended

Determining the direction of an induced current requires two rules applied in sequence and students apply one. HL questions on induction and alternating current demand confident algebra as much as confident physics.

Nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL

Binding energy per nucleon questions are reliable marks if the mass defect is handled carefully with the data booklet. The qualitative quantum content is where exam answers become vague, and vague answers earn nothing in a mark scheme written around specific statements.

Using the data booklet

SL and HL

A skill, not a reference habit. Students waste minutes hunting for an equation they half-remember, or use a formula whose symbols mean something different from what they assumed. Twenty minutes of deliberate data booklet practice pays for itself in a paper.

Extended-response technique

SL and HL

The longer questions are marked against specific points. Writing more does not help; writing the named physical reason does. This is the single most teachable thing on the list and the one most often left untouched by general science tutors.

Uncertainties, error bars and graph analysis

SL and HL

Percentage uncertainty propagation, drawing a line of best fit through error bars, and deciding what a gradient physically represents. These skills carry marks on the papers and underpin the Scientific Investigation, so work here counts twice.

The Scientific Investigation, as process coaching

SL and HL

Assessed internally on four criteria totalling 24 marks. A tutor may teach the criteria, question a research design, explain what good analysis looks like and comment on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not design the investigation or write any part of it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats Al Garhoud families use for Diploma physics, all delivered online over live video, one-to-one unless stated.

Weekly theory and technique

One 60 or 90-minute lesson a week across DP1 and DP2, tracking the school's own sequence through the guide. Half the lesson is content, half is past-paper work marked against the published mark scheme so the student can see which marking point was missed. The format suits students whose physics understanding is sound but whose written answers are not.

  • Topic order follows the school's scheme of work, not a generic march through the guide
  • Every session ends with one past-paper question marked against the mark scheme
  • Data booklet use practised deliberately rather than assumed

Investigation process coaching

A short block of three to five sessions around the Scientific Investigation, timed to the school's internal deadlines rather than to the exam. The work is questioning and feedback: is the research question answerable, is the variable control defensible, does the analysis carry uncertainties properly. The student writes every word of the submission.

  • The four assessment criteria explained with their mark allocations
  • Research design questioned, never supplied
  • Feedback on a draft the student has written, with the honesty boundary stated

Pre-paper intensive

Two or three sessions a week for six to ten weeks before the examination session, built around timed papers. The sequence is a paper under conditions, a line-by-line review, then repair of the two or three specific topics and answer styles that lost marks. Most useful for students who have covered the content once and are losing marks on execution.

  • Starts from a timed paper, not from a topic list
  • Extended-response technique drilled against real mark schemes
  • Uncertainty and graph-analysis questions treated as a separate skill block

01

What a Diploma physics specialist has to be able to do

Before you can judge whether a tutor knows the syllabus, you need a list of what knowing it means. The list is shorter than it sounds and almost none of it is about qualifications on paper. It is about four capabilities, each of which can be tested in a conversation.

The first is mark-scheme literacy. Given a six-mark extended-response question and a student's answer, a specialist will tell you which specific marking points are present and which are missing, in under a minute. A general science tutor will tell you the answer is good or needs more detail. The difference is the whole value of the hour, because almost all preventable loss in Diploma physics happens between understanding the physics and writing something a mark scheme recognises.

The second is data booklet fluency. The booklet is provided in the examination and students who have not practised with it lose minutes they cannot afford and misuse symbols whose meaning differs from their classroom notation. A specialist will open it without hesitation and know which formulations sit where. The third is mathematical confidence at the level the Higher Level fields and induction content demands; physics is the most mathematical of the Diploma sciences and a tutor who stalls on algebraic rearrangement will stall on the course.

The fourth is experimental and uncertainty literacy, which carries marks in the papers and underpins the Scientific Investigation. Propagating a percentage uncertainty, deciding whether a gradient has physical meaning, and judging whether a research design controls what it claims to control are not optional extras. A tutor who treats the investigation as a writing exercise rather than a design exercise is the wrong tutor, and also the kind most likely to drift across the academic-honesty line.

How to verify a physics tutor in one free trial lesson

  • Send a marked script before the lesson and ask for a view on it
  • Listen for named topics and named marking points, not general reassurance
  • Ask directly where they stop on the Scientific Investigation
  • Watch the last ten minutes for whether your child is talking
  • Ask what changes if the target is a 7 rather than a pass

A free trial is only worth anything if you use it as an assessment rather than an introduction. Forty minutes is enough, and you do not need to understand physics to run it. What you are watching for is specificity: a specialist talks about named topics, named question types and named marking points, and a generalist talks about confidence, foundations and building up slowly.

Start by handing over the problem rather than describing it. Send the tutor a photograph of a recent marked physics test or past-paper attempt before the lesson, and ask them to come with a view. By the end of the lesson they should be able to say something like: the physics on the mechanics question was right but the free-body diagram omitted the normal reaction, the circuit question lost two marks because the explanation did not mention internal resistance, and the uncertainty in part c was propagated as an absolute rather than a percentage. Three statements of that kind mean the diagnosis is real.

Then ask the three questions parents most often skip. Which parts of the guide do you teach most weeks? How do you handle the Scientific Investigation, and what will you not do? What would you do differently if my child were targeting a 7 rather than a 5? The third question separates tutors who have a method from tutors who have a manner. A specialist will answer it in terms of extended-response technique and past-paper volume, not in terms of motivation.

Finally, watch your child rather than the tutor for the last ten minutes. A Diploma physics student who is being taught well starts talking. If your child is nodding and the tutor is explaining, the lesson is a lecture, and a lecture is available free on the internet. The behaviour you are paying for is the tutor asking a question your child cannot immediately answer and then waiting.

03

Availability for Higher Level physics, and what happens if nobody is free

Every tutoring page in this search implies unlimited availability, because stating a limit looks like weakness. It is more useful to state it. Higher Level Diploma physics is the tightest coverage in the whole subject list, for the obvious reason that the people who can teach it well are mostly teaching it full time somewhere. Standard Level physics, IGCSE physics and MYP sciences are comfortably covered. Specific combinations, such as HL physics plus HL Mathematics Analysis and Approaches with the same tutor, are harder again.

What that means in practice for an Al Garhoud family is that the slot and the specialist sometimes compete. A 17:00 Tuesday slot with a general science tutor is available immediately. A 17:00 Tuesday slot with an HL physics specialist might be two weeks away, or might require moving to 18:30, or to Thursday. The right answer depends on how close the examination session is and whether the problem is content or technique, and it is a conversation worth having explicitly rather than discovering by drift.

The fallback matters too. Where no UAE-based specialist is available for a niche requirement, the tutor may be based elsewhere and teaching into Gulf Standard Time. That is disclosed rather than hidden, which is more than can be said for parts of this market: two of the most visible agency pages serving UAE parents route enquiries to a non-UAE telephone number without saying where the teaching happens, and one shows a Dubai footer address on a page written for Abu Dhabi.

The table below is the coverage picture as it stands, stated plainly so the planning conversation can start from facts. Nothing in it is a promise about a particular week; it is the shape of the supply problem that the search for a physics tutor near Al Garhoud runs into.

What physics tuition costs around Al Garhoud, cheapest route first

Begin at the bottom of the market rather than the top, because that is where most families start looking. Budget online tutoring in Dubai, typically delivered by university students, is advertised from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour; EdFlik publishes AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52. For MYP sciences or an IGCSE physics catch-up, that band can be perfectly adequate. For Higher Level Diploma physics it usually is not, because the capability list earlier on this page is not what AED 50 an hour buys.

One step up, a qualified subject tutor working online sits between about AED 150 and AED 300; Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. A genuine IB, IGCSE or A Level specialist is quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 rate table showing AED 200 to 450 or more. At the very top, BartyED publishes AED 650 for premium named tutors. In-home one-to-one visits across Dubai, which carry the tutor's travel inside the rate, are quoted at AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate's common range at AED 180 to 350.

For physics specifically, the band that matters is the specialist one, and the useful comparison is not against the budget tier but against the cost of not buying the specialist. A Diploma student who spends twenty weeks with a tutor who cannot read a mark scheme has spent the specialist budget anyway, in hours, and arrives at the paper with the same problem. Where the money is genuinely wasted in this subject is on re-teaching content the student already understands, which is the default behaviour of a tutor without diagnostic capability.

Every figure above is attributed to the provider or dataset that published it; none of them is IB Gram's price, and no price list is published on these pages because the rate depends on level and session length. What is fixed is that the first lesson is free, which means the verification exercise in the previous section costs nothing to run. Set all of it against school fees, which KHDA confirmed in May 2026 would not rise for 2026-27 in Dubai under the emirate's second economic incentives package.

Where the extra Higher Level content actually sits

  • Common core taught to both levels; extensions cluster in the mathematical topics
  • A core weakness needs sequential weekly work; an extension weakness needs a focused block
  • Algebraic fluency is usually the real constraint on HL fields and induction
  • Check the current guide and assessment structure on ibo.org, not on a tutoring page

Parents often assume Higher Level physics is a different course from Standard Level. It is not. It is the same course with extensions, and knowing where those extensions sit tells you where tutoring hours have to go. The common content is taught to both levels; the Higher Level additions concentrate in the more mathematical areas, chiefly fields and potential, electromagnetic induction and alternating current, rotational motion, and the quantum and nuclear material.

That distribution has a practical consequence. A Higher Level student struggling with the common core has a content problem that affects everything, and the fix is sequential: secure the core first, because the extensions build on it. A Higher Level student who is comfortable in the core and losing marks only in the extension areas has a mathematical problem dressed up as a physics problem, and the fix is algebraic fluency plus practice on the specific question styles those topics use.

Distinguishing between those two situations is the first job of a trial lesson, and it changes the whole plan. It also changes the hours. A student in the first situation needs weekly work across DP1 and DP2. A student in the second can often be fixed in a block of eight to ten sessions concentrated on three topics, which is a materially different bill.

Confirm the current structure of the course and its assessment on ibo.org or with your child's IB coordinator before planning around any of it. The Diploma physics guide has been revised, assessment components have changed with it, and ibo.org is the only authority worth citing on what the current papers are. No IB examination or results date appears on this page for the same reason: those dates belong to the IB and to your school's coordinator, not to a tutoring site.

06

The Scientific Investigation, and the line a tutor must not cross

Diploma physics includes an internally assessed Scientific Investigation, assessed against four criteria totalling 24 marks. It is the part of the course where families are most often offered help they should refuse, and the part where the distinction between teaching and producing is sharpest.

What a tutor may legitimately do: explain each criterion and its mark allocation, so the student knows what is being judged; question a research question until the student can defend it; ask whether the variable control does what the student claims; explain what good uncertainty treatment and good evaluation look like, using a different investigation as the example; and give written feedback on a draft the student has written. All of that is teaching, and all of it moves marks.

What a tutor may not do: design the investigation, supply the research question, write any section, or redraft the student's text to completion. The work submitted must be the student's own. A breach is academic malpractice under IB rules, and the consequence falls on the student's award rather than on the tutor. This search results set includes an operator selling completed Internal Assessments outright at a fixed price, which is exactly the offer to walk away from however convenient it looks in a difficult term.

The timing is worth planning as deliberately as the content. Investigation deadlines are set internally by the school, usually months before the examination session, and they collide with mock examinations in most Diploma timetables. Three to five coaching sessions placed around the school's own deadline are worth more than the same sessions placed wherever the calendar happened to be free, and they take pressure off the mock period rather than adding to it.

07

KHDA, the mandatory subjects and the rest of your child's week

Physics does not exist in isolation on a Dubai timetable, and the other demands on the week are part of why a physics plan fails. Private schools in Dubai are regulated by KHDA, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects schools annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. Inspection reports are published on the regulator's own site and are the right place to read about a school rather than a tutoring page's summary of it.

KHDA also requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with the requirement to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for both groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, with the advice that any mandatory subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes.

The practical effect for a Diploma physics student in Al Garhoud is that the timetable carries mandatory subjects on top of six Diploma courses, the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and creativity, activity and service. Physics is competing for attention with all of it. A tutoring plan that assumes the student has unlimited evening hours is a plan that collapses in week four, which is why the weekly slot on this page is one lesson rather than three outside the examination run-in.

Dubai's sector is also still expanding: the 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. More Diploma places means more Diploma physics students competing for the same thin pool of specialists, which is the structural reason the availability conversation earlier on this page is not going to get easier.

08

Permits, credentials and the claims to be sceptical about

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists the route as private tutor licensing, with no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Anyone tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so disregard any page quoting an amount.

Beyond the permit, two claims in this market deserve scepticism. The first is regulator approval. KHDA issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises; it is a specific thing with a specific process, and a tutor or platform without it is not approved by anybody. IB Gram holds no such permit, operates no UAE premises, and claims no accreditation from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. Any page describing its tutors as approved by one of those bodies is describing something that does not exist.

The second is examiner status. Describing a tutor as an IB examiner is only meaningful if the status is current and evidenced, and it should never be used to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content, because it confers none of those. A physics tutor's usefulness is demonstrated in the trial lesson by reading a mark scheme accurately, which is a test anyone can run, rather than by a title on a profile that nobody can check.

Review claims are the third thing to discount. Competitor pages in this set publish self-asserted star ratings, including two different ratings on the same page, and one shows a rating from twenty reviews next to a claim about a far larger student body. Self-serving review markup is against Google's structured data policy and tells you nothing about whether a tutor can teach Higher Level fields. The verification checklist is more work than reading a rating and it is the only method that actually answers the question.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Garhoud

Online delivery means the same physics specialist serves the whole Deira-side cluster. These are the neighbourhoods Al Garhoud families book from, with the detail that actually bears on a physics session.

Al Garhoud

Low-rise, quiet, bounded by the Creek, Garhoud Bridge and the airport perimeter. A short school run but a tight afternoon: the bridge approaches are at their worst exactly when a DP student is free.

Dubai Festival City

Immediately adjacent, with its own IB continuum school. Diploma students here often share a bus route with Garhoud, so a 17:00 physics slot works for both sides of Al Rebat Street.

Deira

Older, denser and served by the Green Line. Apartment living means a quiet room for a 90-minute physics session is worth planning for, which is easier with a headset than with a visitor at the table.

Oud Metha

Across Al Maktoum Bridge and the destination for many Garhoud secondary pupils. Students here finish earlier than the postcode suggests, which opens a 16:30 slot for past-paper work.

Al Mamzar

Northern coastal edge of Deira with the longest bus loop to the Garhoud and Festival City schools. Fifty-minute afternoon runs push the first workable physics slot towards 17:15.

Al Qusais

Large residential corridor towards Sharjah with several schools of its own. Families crossing to Sharjah in the evening tend to take the earliest available slot rather than the latest.

Al Karama and Al Mankhool

Dense apartment districts with a high share of secondary-age students. Evening slots after 18:00 dominate here, often immediately after a sibling's own lesson has finished.

Hor Al Anz and Al Nahda

Inner and outer Deira, with school destinations split across both sides of the Creek. The usable slot is set by the school timetable rather than by the home address, so that is where the conversation starts.

Schools are named as context for the neighbourhood's education market; IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from or connection with any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marked script, not just the subject

A photograph of a recent marked physics test or past-paper attempt, plus the year group, level and school, turns the first lesson into a diagnosis instead of an introduction. It is also the single piece of information that lets a specialist show you they are one.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson run as an assessment

Forty minutes, no payment. The tutor should finish able to name two or three specific loss points: a missing marking point on an extended response, an uncertainty propagated wrongly, a free-body diagram with a force omitted. General reassurance is a failed trial.

  3. 03

Agree the plan, the slot and the availability honestly

Level, topic order against the school's sequence, number of sessions, and whether the specialist you want is free in the slot you want. If HL coverage means a later slot or a different weekday, that is said before the term is planned rather than after.

  4. 04

Weekly lessons with a mark-scheme review in each

Content for part of the hour, a timed past-paper question marked against the published mark scheme for the rest, and a short written note afterwards naming what was missed. The note is for you, so progress is visible without sitting in on lessons.

  5. 05

Reassess at the mock, and say if the match is wrong

After school mocks the script is reviewed and the plan rewritten around what it showed. If your child needs a different specialist for the final block, or needs fewer sessions and more independent past-paper work, that is said plainly.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The pool widens instead of narrowing

Searching for a physics tutor near Al Garhoud restricts you to whoever will drive to the airport perimeter at 17:00. Online delivery over live video means the search is for a Higher Level Diploma physics specialist instead, which is a different and much better-stocked search.

A verification method you can run yourself

The capability table and the trial-lesson checklist on this page work whether or not you know any physics. Specificity is the signal: named topics, named marking points, named loss on a real script. You do not need to take anyone's word for it.

Availability stated before you commit

Higher Level physics coverage is tight and the page says so. Knowing that a peak 17:00 slot may be two weeks out, or may mean a Thursday instead, lets you plan a term rather than discover the constraint in week three.

Market rates published and attributed

Three of the six most visible competitor pages in this search quote no price at all and two quote in US dollars. Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider or dataset that published it, so a quote you receive can be judged against the band it sits in.

A stated limit on the Scientific Investigation

Teaching the criteria, questioning the design, feedback on the student's own draft. Not designing it, not writing it, not redrafting it to completion. The limit is written down because parts of this market sell the opposite and the student carries the consequence.

No claimed approvals and no invented statistics

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, Ministry, IB, Cambridge or Pearson accreditation and claims none, operates no UAE premises, and publishes no satisfaction percentage or star rating it cannot evidence. What is published here is sourced or attributed.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Garhoud: your questions answered

Is there actually an IB physics tutor near Al Garhoud who knows the Diploma syllabus?+

Within walking distance, almost certainly not. Al Garhoud is a small, low-rise neighbourhood, and Higher Level Diploma physics is a narrow specialism whose practitioners are mostly teaching it full time in schools. That is why lessons here are delivered one-to-one over live video rather than in person: the search becomes for a Diploma physics specialist rather than for a science graduate within a twenty-minute drive of the airport perimeter. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is an India-only service, and for a subject this narrow that widens the available pool rather than narrowing it.

How do I tell whether a physics tutor really understands the Diploma mark schemes?+

Send a marked script before the trial lesson and ask them to come with a view on it. A specialist will tell you which specific marking points are missing from a six-mark extended response, usually in under a minute. A generalist will say the answer needs more detail or better structure. Ask them which booklet entry applies to a named question, and ask what they would do differently if your child were targeting a 7 rather than a 5. The answer should be about extended-response technique and past-paper volume, not about confidence and motivation.

What is the difference between Higher and Standard Level Diploma physics in practice?+

Higher Level is the same course with extensions rather than a separate one. The common content is taught to both levels, and the Higher Level additions cluster in the more mathematical areas: fields and potential, electromagnetic induction and alternating current, rotational motion, and the quantum and nuclear material. That matters for planning. A student weak in the common core needs sequential weekly work, because the extensions build on it. A student comfortable in the core but losing marks only in the extension topics usually has an algebra problem rather than a physics one, and that can be fixed in a focused block.

Why does my child understand physics in class but lose marks in tests?+

Because understanding and answering are different skills, and the Diploma papers mark the second one. Extended-response questions are assessed against specific named points, so an answer that is conceptually right but does not state the required physical reason earns nothing. Add the common mechanical losses, free-body diagrams with a force omitted, uncertainties propagated as absolute rather than percentage, circuit explanations that never mention internal resistance, and most of a grade can sit in execution rather than knowledge. This is the most teachable gap in the subject and the one a general science tutor is least likely to target.

How quickly can you find a Higher Level physics tutor for a slot after school?+

For Standard Level, usually within a week. For Higher Level in a peak 16:30 to 17:30 slot, often one to two weeks, and sometimes the honest answer is that the slot and the specialist compete. A later start at 18:30, or a Thursday when the school week is ending anyway, is normally available sooner. Where no UAE-based specialist covers a niche combination, the tutor may be based elsewhere and teaching into Gulf Standard Time, and that is disclosed rather than hidden. Ask about availability before planning a term around a particular hour.

What does the Scientific Investigation count for, and how is it marked?+

It is internally assessed against four criteria totalling 24 marks and it forms part of the final Diploma physics grade. Because it is coursework, the honesty rules bite hardest here. A tutor may explain each criterion and its mark allocation, question a research question until the student can defend it, challenge whether the variable control does what the student claims, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not design the investigation, supply the question, or write any part of it. Confirm the current criteria and weighting with your child's IB coordinator or on ibo.org.

Can a tutor look over my son's physics investigation before he submits it?+

A tutor can read a draft your son has written and tell him what a criterion is asking for that his draft does not yet deliver. That is feedback, and it is legitimate and useful. What a tutor must not do is rewrite sections, supply analysis, or edit the text to completion, because the submission has to be the student's own work. The distinction is not a formality: academic malpractice under IB rules puts the student's whole award at risk, and the consequence falls on him rather than on the tutor. Operators in this market selling finished assessments are selling that risk.

How much does a Diploma physics specialist cost per hour in Dubai?+

Published market figures put specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above: TutorChase publishes AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 rate table shows AED 200 to 450 or more. Below that, a qualified subject tutor working online sits at roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB tuition from AED 200. Budget online tutoring runs from about AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik at AED 45 to 65, which is often adequate for IGCSE physics but rarely for Higher Level. Premium named tutors go higher, with BartyED publishing AED 650. Those are market rates, not IB Gram's price.

Is it worth paying specialist rates when cheaper physics tutoring is available?+

For MYP sciences or an IGCSE physics catch-up, often not. For Higher Level Diploma physics, usually yes, and the reason is arithmetic rather than snobbery. A tutor who cannot read a mark scheme will spend twenty weeks re-teaching content your child already understands, and at the end of it the written answers still miss the marking points. You have then spent the specialist budget in hours instead of in dirhams and arrived at the paper with the original problem. The waste in this subject is almost never the hourly rate; it is hours spent on the wrong activity.

Which physics topics do Dubai Diploma students most often need help with?+

Electricity and circuits is the most common across the whole course, because the questions require reasoning about potential dividers, internal resistance and non-ohmic components rather than formula recall, and roughly half the marks go to explanation. After that: fields and potential, where sign conventions cause more errors than the physics does; electromagnetic induction, where the direction of an induced current needs two rules applied in sequence; and uncertainty and graph analysis, which carries marks on the papers and underpins the investigation. The qualitative quantum material is where answers go vague, and vague answers score nothing.

Should my child take Higher Level physics if they want to study engineering?+

Most engineering and physical-science departments that UAE students apply to expect Higher Level physics alongside Mathematics Analysis and Approaches rather than Applications and Interpretation. Check the specific departmental requirement in writing before the Diploma subject choice is locked, because changing route in DP2 is difficult. Tutoring cannot substitute for the prerequisite, and no page should imply that tuition is required for admission, which is a false claim about an admissions process. What tutoring can do is make Higher Level physics survivable alongside the rest of a Diploma timetable.

Do physics tutors working with Al Garhoud families need a UAE permit?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible categories include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists the application as private tutor licensing, with no fee and a two-working-day completion time through the app, website or e-services. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published, so ignore any figure quoted on a tutoring site.

What should I make of a tutor advertised as an IB physics examiner?+

Treat it as a claim to verify rather than a credential to rely on. Examiner status is only meaningful if it is current and evidenced, and it should never be taken to imply access to marking decisions, grade boundaries or paper content, because it confers none of those. The practical test is better: hand over a marked script and see whether the tutor can name the missing marking points. That tells you what you actually need to know, it takes a minute, and anyone can run it. The same scepticism applies to self-asserted star ratings, which several pages in this search publish.

Why does my child's Dubai school teach Arabic and Islamic Education alongside the Diploma?+

Because KHDA requires it. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with implementation required by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must run separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. For tutoring planning the point is simply that the week is fuller than six Diploma subjects suggests.

How many physics sessions a week does a Diploma student in Al Garhoud need?+

One 60 or 90-minute lesson a week through DP1 and DP2 is the usual pattern, rising to two or three a week for six to ten weeks before the examination session. More than that rarely helps, because the limiting factor becomes independent past-paper work rather than teaching time. A student who sits one timed paper a fortnight and reviews it against the mark scheme will improve faster on a single weekly lesson than one taking three lessons and doing nothing between them. The week is also already full of mandatory subjects, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.

What time can a physics lesson start for a student living in Al Garhoud?+

On most weekdays, 16:30 at the earliest and more often 17:00 or 17:30. Secondary schools in and around Al Garhoud, Festival City and Oud Metha finish between 14:00 and 15:00, activity clubs extend two or three afternoons to about 16:00, and a bus loop through Garhoud, Al Rigga or Al Mamzar adds twenty-five to fifty minutes. Thursday suits a longer 90-minute session because Friday mornings start later at most schools. Saturday morning is the only window where a full timed paper plus a proper review fits without rushing either half.

Test the tutor, then plan the term

The question behind a search for an IB physics tutor in Al Garhoud is whether anybody reachable actually knows the Diploma syllabus, and it is answerable in forty minutes. Send a photograph of a recent marked script with the year group, level and school. The first lesson is free and is used as a diagnosis: by the end of it you should have two or three named loss points, not a general impression. Ask directly about availability for Higher Level and about where the tutor stops on the Scientific Investigation. Nobody can promise a grade, and a tutor who offers one has told you something useful about their judgement.
