IB Tutor near me in Al Garhoud

Searching for an IB tutor near me in Al Garhoud is usually a budget decision disguised as a geography one. This page is about the money: the dirham bands the Dubai market actually charges, what a full two-year Diploma support plan adds up to, the six places families reliably waste it, and the questions worth asking before any card details are entered. Every figure is attributed to whoever published it so you can check it rather than trust us.

IB & IGCSE in Al Garhoud

The money question nobody in this search answers

Three of the six pages currently ranking for Dubai IB tutoring queries publish no price at all. One of them has an FAQ that asks what tutoring costs and then declines to answer it. The two that do publish a figure quote United States dollars, which is not the currency an Al Garhoud household transacts in. So the first useful thing this page can do is put the dirham numbers on the screen, with the name of whoever published each one, and let a parent work out what a fair quote looks like.

The second useful thing is to separate price from cost. An hour at AED 60 that produces completed homework and no change in a predicted grade is more expensive than an hour at AED 250 that identifies why a student loses four marks on every data-analysis question. Families in Garhoud, where households tend to be settled and budget-conscious rather than extravagant, usually arrive at this conclusion the slow way: two terms of cheap tutoring, no movement, then a specialist. The point of publishing the bands is to let you skip the first two terms.

The third is scale. The IB Diploma is a two-year commitment in six subjects. A family who books weekly tutoring in two subjects from the start of Year 12 to the examination session is committing to roughly seventy weeks of sessions, and that is a real number that should be written down before the first one is booked. Most families do not need that. Most need one subject for one term, then a different subject the following year, plus a short block around the internal assessments. Knowing the shape of the full commitment is what lets you buy the part of it that matters.

IB Gram delivers all UAE tuition online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. This matters on a cost page more than anywhere else, because the in-home premium is the single largest avoidable line in a Dubai tutoring budget. Compare two advertised packages and the arithmetic is plain: online blocks appear at roughly AED 799 a month for eight sessions, while in-home monthly packages of four two-hour sessions appear at AED 1,599 to 1,799. Same contact hours, roughly double the money, and the difference is a car crossing Al Garhoud Bridge.

What follows is a budget, not a brochure. There is a provider-model comparison that compares models rather than naming competitors unfairly. There is a two-year Diploma cost table. There is a list of the six ways money gets wasted, which is the section most worth reading twice. There is the cost of tutoring set against Dubai school fees and the KHDA fee freeze. And there is a plain account of what you are entitled to ask before paying anybody, including whether they hold a MoHRE private tuition permit, which is free and therefore has no excuse for being absent.

At a glance

  • Published Dubai bands: AED 33-65 budget, 150-300 qualified, 200-450+ specialist, 500-650+ premium
  • In-home adds roughly AED 50-150 an hour of travel premium
  • A two-year, two-subject weekly plan is about seventy weeks of sessions
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free for two years, so ask to see it
  • Lessons here are online; home visits are an India-only service
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Cost varies by programme more than families expect, because what is being bought changes. A PYP hour buys skills practice, an MYP hour buys criterion literacy, and a Diploma hour buys mark-scheme diagnosis, which is the scarcest and therefore the dearest of the three.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led with no examinations and no subject marks. Tutoring requests here are almost always reading fluency, number facts or written output, and they respond to short frequent sessions rather than long ones. This is the one band where a budget-tier tutor can be genuinely good value, because the skill being taught is not assessment-specific.

Primary-age children from Al Garhoud attend schools spread across Oud Metha, Festival City and Al Qusais rather than one local school. Three thirty-minute sessions a week at the budget band often costs less than one specialist hour and does more for a seven-year-old's reading.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each marked against four criteria out of 8 for a total of 32, converted to a 1-7 grade. The Personal Project falls in MYP 5. The money here is best spent on one criterion at a time, because a criterion can be moved in six to eight weeks whereas a subject grade cannot.

The mid-band of the Dubai market, around AED 150 to 300 an hour, is usually the right band for MYP work, provided the tutor has actually marked against MYP descriptors. Paying specialist rates for MYP content teaching is rarely necessary; paying budget rates for criterion work rarely achieves anything.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, with Theory of Knowledge, a 4,000-word Extended Essay and CAS. Most assessment is external and concentrated in one session. HL carries extra content, extra teaching hours and in several subjects an extra paper, so an HL hour is harder to supply and priced accordingly.

This is where the Dubai specialist band of AED 200 to 450 and above becomes justified, and where the premium band above AED 500 starts appearing. A Garhoud family should expect to pay mid-band for SL support and specialist band for HL sciences, mathematics and the Group 3 subjects where local supply is thinnest.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Not every IB subject costs the same to support, because supply differs. These are the subjects Garhoud families ask about, with a note on what the hour is being spent on in each.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic and proof-heavy, with HL adding substantial content and a further paper. HL hours go on multi-step reasoning and on the exploration; SL hours go on method marks and calculator technique. HL supply is thinner than SL, which is visible in the rate.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics-led with heavier technology use. Cheaper to support than Analysis and Approaches at the same level simply because more tutors can teach it credibly. The route decision should still be made against named university requirements rather than cost.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The hour is spent on application rather than recall: interpreting unfamiliar data, handling energetics and equilibrium, and narrowing an internal assessment question until it generates usable quantitative data. HL requests sit firmly in the specialist band.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics and electricity first, fields and quantum later. Most of the money goes on written explanation quality, because students who can calculate often cannot connect cause to effect in the order a mark scheme rewards.

Biology

HL and SL

Volume rather than difficulty. Sessions are best spent on command-term discipline and data-based questions, both of which are cheap to teach and expensive to leave untaught. A mid-band tutor is often sufficient at SL.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram precision is the mark scheme, and the internal assessment commentaries need real news articles applied to named theory. Local supply in Dubai is thinner than for the sciences, so quotes run higher for the same level of experience.

Business Management

HL and SL

Frameworks applied to real organisations, with HL adding further content. The hour is spent teaching judgement rather than content, because the marks sit in the evaluation. Research access for the internal assessment needs planning early.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Analysis of literary and non-literary texts, an individual oral, and a written component. A repeatable analytical paragraph structure is the cheapest high-return intervention in the Diploma, and it does not require a premium-band tutor.

History and Psychology

HL and SL

Essay structure, source evaluation and a word-limited internal investigation. These are the hardest Diploma subjects to staff in Dubai, which means longer waits and firmer rates. Budget accordingly if your child takes either at Higher Level.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core, all DP students

Supervised in school, assessed externally. Paid support here is process coaching: question design, research method, referencing, timeline discipline. It is usually a short block rather than a weekly commitment, and anyone offering to produce the work should be refused.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, priced differently because they cost differently to deliver. All are online, one-to-one, over live video, and all begin with a free trial lesson so the quote comes after a diagnosis rather than before one.

Short diagnostic block

Three or four sessions on one problem, the cheapest honest way to find out whether tutoring is needed at all. It ends with a written statement of what is wrong and what it would take to fix, which a family can then act on, shop around with, or ignore.

  • Three or four sessions inside a fortnight
  • Starts from the most recent marked paper
  • Ends with a written diagnosis, not a sales pitch
  • No commitment to a longer booking

One subject, one term

A single weekly slot in one subject across a term, which is what most Garhoud families actually need and far less than most are sold. A term is long enough to move a paper technique and short enough to stop without losing anything if it is not working.

  • Same tutor and slot through the term
  • Reviewed at the next school assessment
  • Priced per term so the total is visible up front
  • Pauses over the winter and spring breaks if you want

Final-year examination plan

The expensive option, and sometimes the correct one: one or two subjects supported from the start of the final year through to the examination session, with internal assessment blocks built in. This is the commitment worth writing down in full before starting, because it is seventy weeks of sessions at specialist rates.

  • Two subjects maximum, on separate evenings
  • Internal assessment blocks scheduled in advance
  • Paper practice under timed conditions in holidays
  • Reviewed at each mock, with an exit point at each review

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Al Garhoud

The tutors listed here are matched by IB subject and level. We quote after a free trial lesson rather than publishing a flat hourly figure, because a term of Mathematics SL and a final year of Chemistry HL are different commitments and should not carry the same number.

01

The dirham bands, and who published each one

Here is the market, in dirhams, with sources. At the budget end Tutopiya advertises from around AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, both online and generally delivered by generalists or university students. The qualified-subject-tutor band online runs roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists are quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai rate table giving the 200 to 450 plus range. At the top, BartyED publishes AED 650 for named or examiner-level tutors.

In-home visiting rates cut across those bands because they carry travel. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 an hour and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500. Monthly, Bestimate estimates AED 240 to 600 for a weekly one-hour session at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. Advertised packages show the same shape: around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Those are market figures read in October 2026 and attributed to the publisher in each case. They are not IB Gram's prices and should not be read as ours. We quote after a free trial lesson, one per subject before any payment, against a written plan, because the honest price for a term of Mathematics SL is not the honest price for a final year of Chemistry HL and a single advertised hourly rate hides that difference rather than resolving it.

Use the table as a screening tool. A quote materially above the specialist band should come with a specific justification — a named level, a demonstrable specialism, a scarce subject. A quote materially below the qualified band for Higher Level work should prompt a question about what exactly is being supplied.

A two-year Diploma support budget, written out

Nobody in this market writes the full number down, so here it is. Treat the table below as a planning model using the published bands above, not as a quote. The purpose is to let a Garhoud family see which lines are large and which are small, and therefore where to spend and where to decline.

Two observations fall out of it immediately. First, the weekly-session lines dominate everything else, which means the decision that controls your total spend is how many subjects you support weekly and for how long — not the hourly rate you negotiate. Dropping from two weekly subjects to one halves the largest line in the budget. Second, the internal assessment and Extended Essay blocks are small, high-leverage lines: a handful of sessions at the right moment, early, is cheap and prevents the expensive rescue work later.

Set against this, Dubai school fees are the larger number in any case. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in the emirate would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion out of AED 2.5 billion in total. That freeze is the right anchor for a conversation about tutoring: the school fee is fixed for the year, so the discretionary education line in a Garhoud household budget is the tutoring one, and it is worth planning rather than drifting into.

Examination entry costs are deliberately left blank in the table. Entry fees are set and collected by the school as a registration centre and vary; private-candidate arrangements vary more. Ask your school's examinations officer for the actual figure rather than taking one from any website.

Six ways Garhoud families waste tutoring money

  • Buying hours before a diagnosis, then paying teaching rates for the diagnosis
  • Specialist rates for homework supervision; budget rates for HL paper technique
  • The in-home travel premium paid out of habit rather than need
  • Three subjects at once, all half-attended
  • Internal assessment help bought a term too late
  • Paying before the tutor is named

This is the section worth reading twice, because every item on it is something we see monthly and every one is avoidable without spending more. None of them are about choosing the wrong provider. They are about buying the wrong thing.

The first is buying hours before a diagnosis. A family books ten sessions, the tutor spends the first three working out what is wrong, and the diagnosis is paid for at teaching rates. A short diagnostic block first costs less and tells you whether the ten sessions are needed at all. The second is paying specialist rates for homework supervision. If what a student needs is somebody sitting with them while they work, the budget band at AED 33 to 65 does that perfectly and a specialist at AED 300 is being wasted on it. The third is the reverse error: paying budget rates for Higher Level paper technique, which requires mark-scheme literacy that the budget band generally does not have.

The fourth is the in-home premium paid out of habit. Roughly AED 50 to 150 an hour, every session, for proximity that does not affect how well a subject is taught. The fifth is three subjects at once, where a student's week cannot absorb three sessions plus school plus coursework, so all three are half-attended and none of them moves. The sixth is late internal assessment help, which is the most expensive mistake available: four sessions in the term the assessment is set costs a fraction of the rescue work required when a research question that could never have scored well is discovered six weeks before submission.

A seventh, less common but worth naming: paying for a tutor who will not be named until after payment. If an agency cannot tell you who will teach your child and what level they have taught, you are buying an option rather than a service.

04

Provider models compared on the things that cost you money

Every provider in this market compares itself to an unnamed set of other platforms, which tells a parent nothing. A more useful comparison is between models, because the model determines the cost structure and the cost structure determines what you can and cannot expect.

An agency carries overhead and a vetting process, prices in the mid to specialist band, and usually offers a replacement if a match fails. An international marketplace is cheaper because it does no matching, which transfers the vetting work and the risk to you. A freelance independent tutor is often the best value per hour and the least resilient: no replacement, no cover for illness, and no recourse if the fit is wrong. A tuition centre group class is the genuine low-cost option and is frequently dismissed unfairly, since a small group at a fraction of one-to-one rates is better value than a cheap one-to-one hour with a generalist. School-run support is usually free and under-used.

On the lines in the table, two columns matter most and are almost never published. The first is whether the provider can confirm the tutor holds a MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is free of charge for two years and therefore has no excuse for being absent. The second is what happens when a match fails: a replacement at no extra cost, a refund, or nothing. Ask both questions before paying and the answers will separate providers more sharply than the hourly rate does.

IB Gram's own row is in the table for honesty: online only, mid to specialist band, free trial first, replacement if the fit is wrong, and no UAE in-home service at all.

05

What a cheap hour buys and what an expensive one buys

The difference is not enthusiasm or qualifications on paper. It is whether the tutor can look at a marked script and say, in mark-scheme language, exactly which behaviour cost the marks. That single capability is what separates the AED 60 hour from the AED 300 hour, and it is testable in ten minutes without understanding the subject yourself.

Ask any candidate to mark one page of your child's most recent written work out loud, saying what each annotation is worth and why. A specialist does this comfortably, names command terms, and finishes by telling you the one behaviour to change. A generalist corrects spelling, says the work looks good, and suggests more practice. The second person may be perfectly pleasant and genuinely helpful for homework supervision. They cannot move a Higher Level grade, and paying them specialist rates to try is the error the previous section describes.

There is also a middle case worth naming. A strong graduate who has read the syllabus carefully can teach Standard Level content well and is good value in the AED 150 to 300 band. What they generally cannot do is supervise an internal assessment or diagnose why a student plateaus at a 5, because both require having marked against the criteria. For those two jobs, buy the specialist hour and buy fewer of them.

The practical rule we would give a Garhoud parent: match the band to the job rather than to the subject. Homework supervision at the budget band, Standard Level content at the mid band, Higher Level diagnosis and internal assessment work at the specialist band, and nothing at all at the premium band unless a specific scarcity justifies it.

06

HL and SL: where the extra hours and the extra money actually go

Higher Level is not Standard Level taught faster. It is a longer syllabus with additional content, more teaching hours, and in several subjects an extra examination paper, and that is why an HL hour is both scarcer and dearer. A family budgeting for Diploma support should know which of their child's three HL subjects is likely to need paid help, because supporting all three weekly is the most expensive plan available and almost never the right one.

The decision usually resolves itself on two tests. First, which HL subject does the student need for their intended university course, and therefore which grade actually carries consequences. Second, which HL subject shows the largest gap between current attainment and the required grade. Spend on the intersection of those two and leave the third alone unless it is failing.

Internal assessment weighting is the other budget lever. Every Diploma subject carries internally assessed coursework, and the weighting means a few well-spent sessions early can protect a meaningful share of the final grade. This is the cheapest high-value purchase in the whole Diploma and the one most often left until it is expensive. Book it in the term the assessment is set, not the term it is due.

The table sets out the comparison families actually need: not a content list, but where the hours go and what that implies for the budget. One further point of arithmetic is worth making. Because Higher Level carries materially more timetabled teaching at school, a gap in an HL subject is usually a gap in depth rather than coverage, and depth gaps take longer to close than missing topics do. That is the real reason an HL plan runs for a term rather than a fortnight, and why a family should budget in terms rather than in hours.

07

Paying for internal assessment and Extended Essay support legitimately

At least one site competing for this search sells completed Internal Assessments outright. It is worth understanding the economics of that transaction from the buyer's side: the fee is paid once, the malpractice risk sits permanently with the student, and the possible outcome is the loss of the Diploma. The seller carries none of it. No price makes that a good purchase.

Legitimate paid support is narrower and considerably cheaper, because it is a handful of sessions rather than a produced document. A tutor may teach the content the assessment rests on, help narrow a research question until it is answerable with available data, explain the assessment criteria and mark a completed draft against them, teach referencing, challenge a method, and enforce a timeline. For the Extended Essay the most valuable thing a paid hour buys is scheduling discipline, because most Extended Essays fail on timeline rather than ability.

A tutor may not write, draft or edit any part of the submission to completion, supply data the student did not collect, or dictate sentences for transcription. The test is whether the student can explain, unprompted, why each sentence and each decision is in the work. If a provider offers more than this, the extra is not a service you are buying; it is a risk you are being sold.

For budgeting purposes: four sessions per internal assessment, booked in the term the task is set, and four to six sessions of Extended Essay process coaching spread across the year. Those are small lines that prevent large ones.

08

What you are entitled to ask before any payment

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work rather than informal work, and the permit is free, so there is nothing awkward about asking. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is administered by MoHRE, and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE lists the service as issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing, with a two-working-day completion time through its app, website and e-services.

Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any specific amount quoted online is unverified. Separately, an operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA educational services permit for a training institute, which is a different authorisation entirely. IB Gram holds no KHDA permit, operates no premises in the UAE, and is not approved or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. Any provider claiming such approval should be asked for the permit or centre number.

Two more questions are worth asking before money changes hands. Who, by name, will teach my child, and what level have they taught? And what happens if the match does not work — replacement, refund, or nothing? A provider who will not answer the first is selling an option. A provider with no answer to the second has transferred all the risk to you while charging agency rates.

On data, one practical point: lead forms for tutoring collect personal information about a minor. Ask what is collected, why, and how to have it deleted, and expect a privacy policy to be reachable from the page. That is a reasonable question in any market and a specifically reasonable one under UAE personal data protection law.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Garhoud

Al Garhoud sits in the old-Dubai belt between the airport and the Creek. The relevance to cost is that an in-home tutor serving this area has to cross water or the airport road, and that journey is billed to you one way or another.

Al Garhoud

Villas and compounds around the golf club and the airport road, with Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud inside the area. Short internal journeys, but any tutor coming from the Jumeirah or Marina side is pricing in a long drive.

Dubai Festival City

Across the Creek and home to Deira International School and Universal American School. A visiting tutor serving both sides of the water builds the bridge crossing into the hourly rate, usually invisibly.

Oud Metha and Al Jaddaf

The Bur Dubai school belt. Tutors based here are the cheapest in-home option for Garhoud families, and also the most likely to be generalists rather than Diploma specialists.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

Dense eastern school district with a large supply of tuition centres and group classes, which is where the lowest advertised group rates in this part of Dubai tend to come from.

Deira and Al Muteena

Older districts with difficult parking, where in-home visits take longer than the map suggests. Online uptake here has been faster than in the newer villa communities for exactly that reason.

Karama and Al Mankhool

Apartment districts with many dual-income households and a strong preference for fixed evening slots. Group tuition at a centre is common here as the budget alternative to one-to-one.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

The eastern suburbs. A tutor travelling from here to Garhoud at 5pm is committing forty minutes each way, and that time appears in the quote whether or not it is itemised.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Garhoud

Al Garhoud and Dubai Festival City

The immediate cluster. Dubai school fees here sit across a wide band and KHDA confirmed no fee increase for the 2026-27 academic year, which is the right anchor for any conversation about what tutoring should cost on top.

  • Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud
  • Deira International School
  • Universal American School
  • Dubai English Speaking School

Oud Metha and Bur Dubai

Established schools with large rolls, generally at lower fee points than the newer international schools. Families here are the most price-sensitive tutoring buyers in this part of Dubai and the most likely to start at the budget band.

  • The Indian High School Dubai
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Ambassador School

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

The eastern school district, where group tuition centres are concentrated. Group classes are the genuine budget alternative to one-to-one and are worth comparing honestly rather than dismissing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say what you want to spend

Tell us the budget and the subject together. A family with AED 1,000 a month to spend on IB support should be advised differently from one with AED 4,000, and the advice is not simply fewer sessions. Sometimes the right answer at a lower budget is a group option or a shorter, better-aimed block.

  2. 02

    Diagnostic first, hours second

Start with a free trial lesson, one per subject before any payment, and if the position is unclear, a three or four session diagnostic block. The output is a written statement of what is wrong and what fixing it would take, which you are free to act on with anybody.

  3. 03

A quote against a plan, not an hourly rate

You get a total for a defined block with its purpose stated, so the number is comparable to other quotes. We do not publish a single flat hourly figure, because it would either overcharge a Standard Level term or undercharge a final-year Higher Level plan.

  4. 04

An exit point at every review

Every plan has a review tied to the next marked assessment, and every review is an exit point with nothing outstanding. That is deliberate: a provider confident in the work does not need to lock a family in for a year to be paid for a term.

Ask us the permit question too

The questions on this page are meant to be used on us as well. Ask who will teach, what level they have taught, whether they hold a MoHRE private tuition permit, and what happens if the match fails. If any answer is unsatisfactory, do not pay.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Every figure attributed

Each AED band on this page names its publisher and is dated October 2026. Three of the pages ranking for these queries publish no price at all, one refuses to answer its own pricing FAQ, and two quote dollars. A parent cannot screen quotes against numbers nobody will print.

The full commitment written down

The two-year planning table exists so a family sees the size of the largest line before booking the first session. The variable that controls your total is how many subjects you support weekly and for how long, not the hourly rate you negotiate.

No travel premium, because there is no travel

Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is part of our India service. The in-home premium of roughly AED 50 to 150 an hour buys proximity, and proximity does not change how well Chemistry HL is taught.

Quoted after a diagnosis

The free trial comes before the quote, which is the only order that makes the quote meaningful. A price set before anybody has looked at the student's work is a guess dressed up as a rate card.

Exit points, not lock-ins

Plans are reviewed at the next marked assessment and every review is a clean exit. We would rather a family bought one term that worked than twelve months they felt trapped in, and the reviews are written into the plan for that reason.

Claims we do not make

No regulator approval, no partnership with any school or board, no promise about a grade or a score, no self-published star ratings, and no statistics without a source. Several competitors in this search do at least one of those, and each one is a reason to distrust the price next to it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Garhoud: your questions answered

What should an IB tutor cost per hour for a family in Al Garhoud?+

Judge it by band rather than by a single number. Published Dubai figures read in October 2026: budget online generalists AED 33 to 65, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65; qualified subject tutors online AED 150 to 300, Unitors publishing IB from AED 200; specialists AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase at AED 270; premium named tutors up to AED 650. Anything well above the specialist band needs a specific justification, and anything below the qualified band for Higher Level work needs a question about what is actually being supplied.

Is in-home tuition worth the extra AED 100 an hour?+

Only if a screen genuinely will not work for your child. The premium is roughly AED 50 to 150 an hour and it buys proximity, not teaching. The arithmetic is visible in advertised packages: about AED 799 a month for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions, which is the same contact time for roughly double the money. For a young child who cannot settle on screen, or a home with no quiet corner, that premium is defensible. Paid out of habit, it is the largest avoidable line in a Dubai tutoring budget.

What does two years of IB Diploma support actually add up to?+

Using the published bands, one subject supported weekly across both years is roughly 70 sessions, which at AED 150 to 450 an hour comes to somewhere between AED 10,500 and AED 31,500. Two subjects in the final year lands in a similar range. The lines that dominate are the weekly ones, so the decision that controls your total is how many subjects you support and for how long, not the rate you negotiate. Most families actually need one subject for one term at a time, plus a short internal assessment block.

Where do Dubai families most often waste money on tutoring?+

Six places. Buying hours before a diagnosis, so the diagnosis is billed at teaching rates. Paying specialist rates for homework supervision. Paying budget rates for Higher Level paper technique. The in-home travel premium paid from habit. Three subjects at once, all half-attended. And internal assessment help bought a term too late, which turns a four-session job into a rescue. None of these are about choosing a bad provider; they are about buying the wrong thing from a reasonable one.

Is a tuition centre group class better value than a cheap one-to-one hour?+

Often, yes, and it is dismissed too quickly. A small group at a fraction of one-to-one rates with a tutor who knows the syllabus generally beats a one-to-one hour with a generalist at the budget band, because the quality of the teaching matters more than the ratio once the group is small. Group classes are concentrated in the Al Qusais and Al Nahda belt near Al Garhoud. What a group cannot do is diagnose one student's specific mark-losing behaviour, which is what a specialist one-to-one hour is for.

How do I tell a specialist from a generalist without knowing the subject?+

Ask them to mark one page of your child's most recent written work aloud, saying what each annotation is worth and why. A specialist uses mark-scheme language, names command terms, and ends by identifying one behaviour to change. A generalist corrects spelling, says it looks good and suggests more practice. You do not need subject knowledge to hear the difference. Run the test during a free trial rather than over the phone, where anybody can sound convincing.

Should I pay for all three Higher Level subjects?+

Almost never. Supporting three Higher Level subjects weekly is the most expensive plan available and a student's week cannot absorb it alongside school, coursework and CAS. Choose on two tests: which Higher Level subject does the intended university course actually require, and which shows the largest gap between current and required attainment. Spend on the intersection. Leave the third unless it is failing, and review at the next mock rather than committing for the year.

When is the cheapest moment to buy internal assessment help?+

The term the task is set, not the term it is due. Four sessions early — narrowing the research question until the available data can answer it, reading the criteria, planning the method — costs a fraction of the rescue work needed when a question that could never score well is discovered six weeks before submission. It is the smallest high-leverage line in a Diploma budget and the one most often left until it has become the largest.

Can I ask a Dubai tutor to show me their MoHRE permit?+

Yes, and you should. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is administered by MoHRE and is granted free of charge for two years, covering registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and students aged 15 to 18. Because it costs nothing, there is no innocent reason for a working tutor not to hold one. MoHRE lists the service as issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing with a two-working-day completion time.

Does the Dubai school fee freeze change what I should budget for tutoring?+

It makes the planning easier. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. With the school fee fixed for the year, tutoring becomes the discretionary education line in a household budget, which is an argument for planning it as a figure rather than letting it accumulate session by session. Write down the term total before booking the first hour.

Why will you not publish one hourly rate like other providers?+

Because a single figure would either overcharge a Standard Level term or undercharge a final-year Higher Level plan, and in both cases it hides the information a parent needs. We publish the market bands instead, with sources, so you can screen any quote including ours, and we give our own number after a free trial lesson against a written plan. If you want a comparison figure before talking to anybody, the specialist band of AED 200 to 450 is the honest one to budget against.

Who carries the cost if the match has to be changed?+

Ask that question of every provider before paying, because the answers differ enormously. An agency usually offers a replacement. A marketplace generally offers nothing, because it did no matching. A freelance tutor cannot cover their own illness. With us the match is replaced and we tell you whether we think the mismatch was personality, level or subject, since the three need different replacements. Fit problems normally show within two or three sessions, so raise it early rather than waiting for a report.

Is it cheaper to start tutoring in the first year or the final year?+

Cheaper overall to start earlier and buy less. A term of support in the first Diploma year, aimed at one weak paper technique, costs a fraction of a final-year rescue across two subjects, and it protects the internal assessment work that happens in between. The expensive pattern is doing nothing for eighteen months and then buying intensively for six, which is also the pattern least likely to work, because examination technique needs repeated practice over a term to become automatic.

Do you charge more for Higher Level than Standard Level?+

Effectively yes, because supply differs. Higher Level carries additional content, more timetabled hours and in several subjects an extra paper, and fewer tutors can teach it credibly — particularly in the sciences and the Group 3 subjects, where Dubai supply is thinnest. The Dubai specialist band of AED 200 to 450 and above reflects that scarcity rather than a decision by any provider. For Standard Level content teaching, the mid band of AED 150 to 300 is usually the right place to be shopping.

What should I refuse to pay for?+

Any offer to write, complete or produce an internal assessment, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge essay or coursework. At least one operation competing for this search sells finished internal assessments; under IB rules that is malpractice and the consequence falls on your child, not the seller. Also refuse to pay before the tutor is named with the level they have taught, refuse any promise about a grade or a score, and treat a self-published star rating with no countable reviews behind it as a reason to look elsewhere.

How much notice do I need to give to stop?+

Ask before you start, and prefer a provider whose plan has built-in exit points. Ours are tied to the next marked assessment, so a family can stop at a review with nothing outstanding. The pattern to avoid is a long prepaid block with no review structure, because it converts a teaching relationship into a sunk cost and makes it harder to recognise that something is not working. A term is a sensible unit to commit to; a year is not.

Decide the number before you book the hour

The useful order is budget, then diagnosis, then hours. Tell us the subject, the level and what you are willing to spend in a term, and you will get either a plan that fits it or an honest statement that the money would be better spent elsewhere — including on a group class or on your school's own support sessions. The first lesson is free, one per subject, taken before any payment, and the quote comes after it rather than before. Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, with no travel premium because nobody is travelling.
