IGCSE Maths Tutor in Al Quoz

Families looking for an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Quoz often start by comparing their district with Al Barsha or Al Safa, where the schools and the tuition centres are. That comparison answers a question about driving. The questions that change a maths grade are which board your child sits, which tier they are entered for, and which topic the marks keep disappearing into. This page answers all three, with lessons delivered live online.

  • Cambridge 0580 and Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 taught as separate papers
  • Tier decision assessed from a timed paper, not from a conversation
  • Topic-level error diagnosis before any block is booked
  • Live online one-to-one; no tutor visits a UAE address

IB & IGCSE in Al Quoz

The comparison worth running, and the one that changes nothing

Al Quoz parents looking for IGCSE maths support usually compare districts first. Al Barsha has schools inside it. Al Safa and Jumeirah have long-established tuition centres. Al Quoz has warehouses, showrooms, workshops and the Alserkal Avenue arts spaces, with housing in Al Quoz 1, 2 and 3 between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. On a map it looks underserved, and the conclusion drawn from that is usually the wrong one.

Here is what the district comparison genuinely decides: the length of the school run, and therefore the earliest hour a weekday session can start. Al Quoz sits around 5pm to 5.30pm; Al Barsha manages 4.30pm. That matters when a pre-series block needs two sessions a week. It decides nothing at all about the mathematics itself, or about who is able to teach it.

Here is the comparison that does decide something. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics 4MA1 are different papers with different structures and different tier vocabulary. Cambridge sets Core and Extended; Edexcel sets Foundation and Higher. A tutor working from the wrong board's past papers is giving your child confident, well-organised practice in a format they will not sit, and the student cannot tell the difference until results day.

The second decisive comparison is the tier. A capped entry limits the grade available whatever the student achieves, and an over-ambitious entry can produce a worse grade than the capped tier would have. The decision sits with the school to a school deadline, it is often presented as administrative, and it reaches forward: a Core or Foundation entry does not position a student for A Level Mathematics or Higher Level Analysis and Approaches two years later.

The third comparison is the one families almost never run, and it is the cheapest. Compare the problems rather than the providers. A grade of 5 can be produced by weak algebra, by one catastrophic topic, by method marks leaking out of every question, or by running out of time on every paper. Those are four different problems with four different plans, three of which take three or four sessions and one of which takes a term. Nobody can tell them apart from a report card, and one marked script usually separates them in minutes.

So this page compares boards, compares tiers, compares topics by where the marks actually go, and compares the real cost of the options including the extras that nobody mentions until the invoice. One premise first: IB Gram delivers one-to-one IGCSE mathematics into Al Quoz homes as live online video sessions on Gulf Standard Time, with working shared and annotated on screen. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-person home visits are a service we run in India only.

Mathematics at IGCSE arrives in several versions, and which one a student sits changes the plan completely. Each below is described by what it demands rather than by its reputation.

0580Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics

Tiered Core and Extended, with papers set per tier and the Core tier capped below the top grades. Extended carries the algebra, trigonometry and function work that post-16 mathematics assumes. Papers reward method, so unshown working forfeits marks even where the final answer is correct, and premature rounding breaks multi-step answers that were otherwise sound.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. The authoritative timetable for an Al Quoz child is the one the school's exams officer holds.

4MA1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Tiered Foundation and Higher, with a different paper structure from Cambridge and different mark allocation conventions. Content overlaps heavily, which is exactly why families mix the two up, and the overlap does not help a student who has practised the wrong format all term.

Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series and revises them, so plans belong against the live official document. Checkable results reference points: June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, while November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

0606Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Cambridge Additional Mathematics

Taken alongside 0580 by stronger cohorts as a bridge to A Level or Higher Level IB, introducing calculus and more formal function work. A student comfortable in 0580 Extended who finds 0606 hard usually has a speed and fluency gap rather than a conceptual one, which responds well to short regular practice.

Where a school in the Al Quoz or Al Barsha cluster offers it, Additional Mathematics is the strongest available signal that a student is ready for Higher Level Analysis and Approaches or A Level Mathematics. Where it is not offered, the equivalent evidence is a timed Extended paper under examination conditions.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

What the maths grade and tier decide next

Most British-curriculum schools in Dubai run IGCSE to 16 and then offer A Level, the IB Diploma or both. Mathematics is the subject where the IGCSE decision constrains post-16 choice most sharply, because a capped tier removes a prerequisite regardless of the grade achieved within it.

Several schools in this part of Dubai offer both post-16 routes, which makes the Year 10 tier decision more consequential here than in a single-pathway school. Raise it with the subject teacher before the confirmation deadline rather than after the mock results arrive.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

IGCSE mathematics is best organised by topic, because that is where the marks are lost and where a block of sessions can be aimed. Below is what each area demands and the error that recurs most in marked scripts.

Number and the four operations in context

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

Fractions, percentages, ratio, standard form and bounds. The dominant error is premature rounding, which produces an answer just outside the acceptable range and loses marks on work that was otherwise correct from start to finish.

Algebraic manipulation

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

Expanding, factorising, rearranging and solving. Fluency here determines performance everywhere else, because a student slow at manipulation spends their working memory on mechanics and has none left for the question being asked.

Equations, inequalities and simultaneous systems

Extended and Higher weighted

Quadratics by factorising, formula and completing the square, plus simultaneous equations including one linear and one non-linear at the higher tiers. Marks go missing when a correct solution set is found and not checked against the original condition.

Functions and graphs

Extended and Higher weighted

Sketching, transformations, gradients, intercepts and interpreting graphical information. Students lose marks on sketches that are qualitatively right but missing the labelled features the question specifically asked for, which is a reading problem rather than a mathematical one.

Geometry and mensuration

All tiers

Angle reasoning, circle properties, similarity, area and volume of composite solids. Reasons are marked as well as answers: an unstated angle fact forfeits the explanation mark even where the numerical answer is right.

Trigonometry

Extended and Higher weighted

Right-angled and non-right-angled triangles, bearings and three-dimensional problems. The recurring failure is a calculator left in the wrong angular mode, which yields a confidently wrong answer that looks like carelessness and is actually a habit.

Statistics and data handling

All tiers

Averages from grouped data, cumulative frequency, histograms with unequal intervals and scatter graphs. Histograms are reliably the worst-answered topic in this part of the syllabus because frequency density is treated as optional.

Probability

All tiers

Tree diagrams, conditional probability and set notation at the higher tiers. Errors cluster around failing to adjust for non-replacement, and around answers left as unsimplified products when the question asked for a value.

Vectors and transformations

Extended and Higher

Column vectors, magnitude and geometric reasoning with vectors. Marks are available for the reasoning chain rather than the final vector, so answers given without the intermediate statements score below their apparent worth.

Calculator technique and the formula list

All tiers

Not a topic and worth marks throughout. Knowing which functions the calculator provides, which formulae are given and which must be recalled, and how to report a calculator result with supporting method, is trainable and usually left to accident.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns, chosen by what the marked scripts show rather than by budget. All are live one-to-one video sessions with shared working, and none involves a tutor travelling to a UAE address.

Topic repair, short and targeted

Three to five sessions on one identified topic, chosen from marked scripts. Histograms, trigonometry in three dimensions and conditional probability are the usual candidates. This is the cheapest useful intervention in IGCSE mathematics and the one families most often skip in favour of general weekly support.

  • Topic selected from marked papers, not from a feeling
  • Practice drawn from the correct board and tier only
  • Error log kept so the fix can be verified
  • Ends when the topic stops appearing in the log

Tier decision and fluency block

A timed paper from the harder tier, marked honestly, followed by work on algebraic fluency and method presentation. Used in Year 10 and early Year 11 when the tier is still open, which is also when fluency work is cheapest because nothing has been built on the gap yet.

  • Evidence produced for the school's tier conversation
  • Algebraic speed treated as a trainable skill
  • Method presentation taught against the scheme wording
  • Honest advice when the evidence points to the capped tier

Pre-series paper block

Two sessions a week across a defined block before the June or November series, built from timed past papers of the correct board and tier, marked against the published scheme. Used when content is broadly known but marks are not arriving, which is the dominant Year 11 pattern.

  • Weekly timed papers with the mark predicted before it is given
  • Per-question time budget taught explicitly
  • Error log by topic and by command term
  • Ends at a stated review point rather than at term end

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Quoz

01

What an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Quoz needs to establish first

  • Board and syllabus code confirmed: Cambridge 0580 or Edexcel 4MA1
  • Tier confirmed, because practice must match the entered tier
  • Failing topic identified from marked scripts before any block is booked
  • Live online delivery with shared working; no tutor at a UAE address

An IGCSE maths tutor in Al Quoz means one-to-one mathematics teaching at home on a weekday evening. IB Gram delivers that as a live online session into Al Quoz homes on Gulf Standard Time, with working shared and annotated on screen. No tutor is sent to a UAE address, because in-person home visits are a service we run only in India.

Three facts have to be established before any teaching is useful, and a tutor who does not ask for them is guessing. The board and code, because Cambridge 0580 and Edexcel 4MA1 are different papers. The tier, because a Core or Foundation candidate practising Extended or Higher material is learning content that will not appear and losing confidence to no purpose. And the failing topic, taken from marked scripts rather than from the grade.

The third of those is where most of the value sits. A grade of 5 can be produced by weak algebra, by a single catastrophic topic, by consistent method-mark loss across every question, or by running out of time. Those are four different problems. Three of them are short fixes and one is a term of work, and nobody can tell which from a report card. One marked paper usually settles it in minutes.

Mathematics is also the subject where online delivery is straightforwardly better rather than a compromise. Both people look at the same working at the same moment, every line is legible, and the session can stop on one step until it is understood. Nothing depends on who was free to drive across Al Khail Road at five o'clock.

02

Cambridge 0580 against Edexcel 4MA1

Across the competitor pages researched for this market, exactly one syllabus code appeared in an entire seven-page cluster. That omission is why so many Dubai families end up with a tutor using the wrong papers: nobody told them the distinction existed, and the content overlap is large enough that the error is invisible from inside a session.

What differs is not the mathematics but the examination. Paper structure, the number and length of papers, mark allocation conventions, how heavily certain topics are weighted and the tier vocabulary itself all vary. Cambridge sets Core and Extended; Edexcel sets Foundation and Higher. A parent translating between those terms in a phone call can agree to the wrong entry without anyone noticing.

Check this per subject rather than per school, because departments choose independently. A single Al Quoz student can sit Cambridge 0580 Mathematics and Edexcel 4CH1 Chemistry in the same year. The code is printed on the school's assessment paperwork and the subject teacher will confirm it in one line, which is the single most valuable email a parent can send this term.

On dates, both boards publish provisional timetables in advance and revise them, so use the live official document. For a candidate sitting in the UAE, Cambridge runs June and November, with the February and March series offered to India only. Edexcel runs May and June, and November. Pearson's June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

The tier decision, and the door it closes

This is the highest-leverage decision in IGCSE mathematics and it is routinely made for the wrong reason. The capped tier protects a student from a grade collapse, which is a legitimate aim. It also removes a prerequisite, which is a different and longer-lasting consequence that rarely gets raised in the same conversation.

The honest test is a timed paper from the harder tier, taken now, with no help and no notes. If the score sits near the bottom of that tier's range, there is a real decision about whether a block of work closes the gap or whether the capped tier produces the better outcome. If it sits in the middle, the conversation is over. What should not decide it is which tier the student finds more comfortable in class, because comfort and capability diverge under timed conditions.

The forward consequence is specific. A Core or Foundation mathematics entry does not position a student for A Level Mathematics or for Higher Level Analysis and Approaches in the IB Diploma, whatever grade they achieve inside the cap. In a school offering both post-16 routes, which several in this part of Dubai do, that is a Year 12 limitation created by a Year 10 form.

The deadline belongs to the school. Ask the subject teacher when the tier must be confirmed, and bring evidence to that meeting rather than opinion. A recent marked paper from the harder tier is worth more than any amount of discussion about potential.

Topic by topic: where the marks actually go

Marked scripts are repetitive. The same five or six failures account for most lost marks in IGCSE mathematics, and almost none of them is an inability to do mathematics. They are habits, and habits respond to short targeted work rather than to a term of general revision.

The largest single category is method marks forfeited by omitted working. A student who sees the answer writes the answer, and the scheme pays for the steps. This usually costs more marks across a paper than any individual topic does, and it responds to four sessions of marking their own scripts against the scheme until they can predict the mark before it is given.

After that come the specific topics that are reliably taught in a hurry: histograms with unequal class widths, where frequency density is treated as optional; conditional probability without replacement; three-dimensional trigonometry; and vector reasoning where the marks sit in the intermediate statements rather than the final answer. Each of these is a three to five session fix when identified, and an expensive mystery when not.

Premature rounding deserves its own mention because of how unfair it feels. A student carries a value rounded to two decimal places through four further steps and arrives just outside the accepted range, losing the mark on work that was correct throughout. It takes two sessions and a rule: carry full precision and round only on the final line.

The last category is timing, which disguises itself as weakness. A student who scores well with unlimited time and poorly under examination conditions does not need more teaching; they need a per-question time budget and practice holding it. You can test for this at home in one evening with a past paper taken twice, and the result changes the plan entirely.

The cost comparison, including the extras nobody mentions

Published hourly rates are the easy part of a cost comparison. The hard part is everything attached to them, which is where Al Quoz families most often find the real total diverging from the quote. So this section compares options on both.

The market first, attributed and dated October 2026. Budget online tutoring starts at Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 per hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. A qualified subject tutor online runs roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED at AED 650. In-home one-to-one visits run AED 180 to 500 including travel, per Bestimate's 2026 Dubai cost table. Monthly packages seen in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. None of this is an IB Gram price list; ours is set after the free trial.

Now the extras. Minimum commitments that convert a trial into a term. Travel surcharges on in-home visits outside a stated radius, which matters in a district bordered by two motorways. Two car journeys per session for a centre class, which is a real cost in time even when it is not billed. Materials charges where a provider sells its own workbooks. Cancellation windows that charge for a session your child spent in a school detention. And rates that rise in the weeks before a series, which is the point at which switching is hardest.

Ask about each one before the first session rather than after the third. A provider who answers all six plainly is telling you something useful about how they operate, and a provider who deflects is also telling you something.

06

Calculators, formula provision and what the student is allowed

  • Ask the subject teacher which formulae are provided for your child's paper and tier
  • Build the memorisation list from what is not provided, which is usually short
  • Teach angular mode checks and calculator reporting explicitly, early
  • Board papers and mark schemes are cited and linked, never supplied as downloads

This is a small subject that costs real marks, and no competitor page in this market addresses it. A student who does not know which formulae are provided will either memorise things unnecessarily or, worse, assume something is given and find it is not. Both show up as content failure in a mock and are neither.

The provision differs between boards and is stated in the current syllabus documents your child's school holds. We do not reproduce those documents, because they are the boards' copyright, so the practical instruction is to ask the subject teacher for the formula provision for the specific paper and tier your child sits, and then build the memorisation list from what is not provided. That list is usually much shorter than students assume, which is itself reassuring.

Calculator technique is the other half. Knowing which functions the machine offers, which are permitted, how to check an angular mode before starting, and how to report a calculator result with the supporting method line, are all trainable skills worth marks across every paper. Most students acquire them accidentally and incompletely. Thirty minutes of explicit teaching early in Year 10 is worth more than the same time spent on content.

One related point on materials: we do not publish or supply Cambridge or Pearson past papers, mark schemes, grade boundary tables or syllabus documents as downloads. We reference them, cite the official source and link to it. Your child's school has proper access, and a provider offering those files as a selling point is distributing someone else's copyright.

07

Why the maths grade carries extra weight in the UAE

  • Five GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3
  • Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from that count of five
  • American track requires SAT Math 450 or above before applying
  • Verify on moe.gov.ae; this is not a service IB Gram provides

Mathematics does more work than other IGCSE subjects in this market, for two reasons that families often meet separately and should see together. The first is post-16 progression, already covered: a capped tier closes A Level Mathematics and Higher Level Analysis and Approaches. The second is equivalency, which is about what a UAE university or employer will accept.

The published British-track rule requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. One competitor page currently ranking in this market tells parents six subjects are needed, which is wrong and could change what a family makes their child sit.

On the American track, mathematics appears explicitly: at least 450 in the SAT Math test is required before applying, with English proficiency satisfied by a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section. For the IB, no points threshold appears in the source we read, so none is published here.

Two cautions. IB Gram does not perform, submit or expedite equivalency, and tutoring is not required for it; it is a process families complete through the official channel. And requirements change, so verify the current position on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority before planning a subject list around any number, including the ones on this page.

08

Starting from Al Quoz, and what we will not claim

  • Send board and code, tier, school and the last two marked papers
  • Free trial lesson used as a diagnosis, before any payment
  • A block with a stated length and a review date in it
  • No grade promises, no claimed approvals, no invented numbers

Four things to send: the board and code, the tier, the school, and the last two marked mathematics papers. A specialist reading those will usually name the failing pattern in a sentence, and the free trial lesson exists to produce that diagnosis before anything is paid for.

What will not be claimed. No grade promise, because no honest provider can make one. No suggestion that tutoring is required for equivalency, university admission or school progression, because that is a false claim about a regulatory process. No regulator or board approval: IB Gram holds no permit, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, and operates no UAE office or centre. No satisfaction percentages, because a statistic without its sample, date and method is decoration.

A limit stated in advance: in the weeks before a series, early-evening slots are genuinely constrained, because much of Dubai's Year 11 cohort wants the same hour. When it happens you are told, offered the nearest workable alternative and given a realistic view of when the slot opens. Nobody general is quietly substituted for the specialist you asked for.

Finally, the permit position, which is worth asking of any provider. Individuals offering private tuition in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023; it is granted free of charge for two years, eligible categories include school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents and university students, and those operating without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount appears here.

Where we tutor

Al Quoz against the districts families compare it with

This is the comparison most Al Quoz parents are running. The honest difference in every row is the hour the session can start, not the quality of maths teaching available.

Al Quoz 1, 2 and 3

Housing inside a largely industrial district, with school runs heading out in several directions. Weekday maths sessions realistically start at 5pm to 5.30pm, and a second weekly session in a pre-series block usually moves to the weekend.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

Several schools inside the district and a 4.30pm start. The extra half hour is the real advantage, and it is worth about one additional weekday session per week in the eight weeks before a series.

Al Safa and Jumeirah

Established villa districts with tuition centres within easy reach. Families here genuinely can choose a centre group class, which is reasonable for broad coverage and poor value for repairing one topic.

Business Bay

Towers with no school inside the district and a long run both ways, pushing the practical weekday start to about 6pm. Longer timed-paper work tends to move to a weekend morning.

Al Jaddaf and Culture Village

Short runs on the creek side. The live comparison here is an online board specialist against a centre in Oud Metha, and two car journeys per session usually settle it.

Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Villa communities with nearby schools and a 4.30pm to 5pm start. Easier to sustain two sessions a week during the eight weeks before a series without using the weekend.

Al Quoz Industrial 1 to 4

Warehouses, workshops, showrooms and arts spaces rather than housing. Named because a proximity search for a maths tutor in Al Quoz returns a list shaped by land use rather than by the families who live there.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Quoz

Al Quoz, Al Safa and Al Barsha

The British and Indian curriculum cluster generating almost all IGCSE mathematics demand in this district. Board choice varies between schools and sometimes between departments, which is why the code matters more than the catchment.

  • Safa Community School
  • GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail
  • Delhi Private School Dubai
  • GEMS Our Own Indian School, Al Quoz
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Repton School Al Barsha
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park

The central corridor and creek side

Schools across Al Khail Road running British and IB routes, several offering both post-16 pathways. Their mock windows differ from the Al Barsha cluster, so a tier conversation can be due six weeks earlier or later than a neighbour's.

  • Hartland International School
  • Kent College Dubai
  • GEMS Modern Academy, Nad Al Sheba
  • Deira International School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai

Schools are named purely as context for the Al Quoz education market. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any of them, and none is a client.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the code and the tier

Cambridge 0580 Core or Extended, or Edexcel 4MA1 Foundation or Higher. These are four different practice sets and getting it wrong wastes the block. The school's assessment paperwork states it, and the subject teacher will confirm in one line.

  2. 02

    Send two marked papers

A grade of 5 can come from weak algebra, one catastrophic topic, method marks lost everywhere, or timing. Those are four plans of four different lengths. Two marked scripts usually separate them in minutes, and photographs are perfectly adequate.

  3. 03

Run the two-paper timing test at home

Give the same past paper once under strict timing and once untimed. A large gap means pacing, not content, and that single evening of work at home can redirect the whole plan before any money is spent.

  4. 04

Free trial lesson as a diagnosis

One live session with shared working. By the end you should have the failing pattern named in a sentence and an honest block estimate, including the cases where the honest answer is three sessions rather than a term.

  5. 05

    Review against the next assessment

The block ends at a stated point and is reviewed against the next school assessment or mock. If the topic has stopped appearing in the error log, stopping is the right recommendation and it will be made rather than avoided.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Board-specific practice from the first session

Cambridge 0580 and Edexcel 4MA1 practice sets are kept separate, because the papers differ in structure, mark allocation and tier vocabulary even where the mathematics is the same. One syllabus code appeared across an entire seven-page competitor cluster researched for this market.

The tier decision treated as a post-16 decision

A capped entry removes A Level Mathematics and Higher Level Analysis and Approaches whatever grade is achieved within it. That consequence is stated plainly here so a family can raise it before the school's confirmation deadline rather than in Year 12.

Topic-level diagnosis before purchase

Omitted working, premature rounding, histograms, conditional probability, angular mode and timing are six separate problems that look identical in a grade. Four of the six are three to four session fixes, and the free trial exists to find out which one you have.

Costs compared including the extras

Minimum blocks, cancellation windows, travel surcharges, materials charges, class sizes and peak-season rate changes, alongside the published AED bands attributed to their sources and dated October 2026.

The equivalency rule stated correctly

Five GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3 excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one A Level or two AS Levels at E, and SAT Math 450 on the American track. A ranking competitor publishes six subjects, which is wrong.

Copyright and permit positions held honestly

Board papers and mark schemes are cited and linked rather than supplied, the MoHRE permit requirement is stated with its resolution number, and no fine amount is quoted because the ministry published no schedule.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Quoz: your questions answered

Does it matter whether my child's maths tutor knows 0580 or 4MA1?+

In Year 11 it matters a great deal. The mathematics overlaps heavily but the examinations do not: paper structure, mark allocation conventions, topic weighting and even tier vocabulary differ, with Cambridge setting Core and Extended while Edexcel sets Foundation and Higher. A tutor practising the wrong board's papers is giving diligent, well-organised preparation for a format your child will never sit, and neither of them can see the mistake until results day. Ask which code they teach.

Will a maths tutor come to our home in Al Quoz?+

Not through IB Gram. We teach IGCSE mathematics one-to-one into Al Quoz homes over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with working shared and annotated on screen, and send no tutors to UAE addresses; in-person home visits are an India-only service for us. Other Dubai providers do visit homes at roughly AED 180 to 500 per hour with travel included, per Bestimate's 2026 cost table. For mathematics the shared screen is generally a better working surface than one sheet of paper.

Should my child be entered for Core or Extended maths?+

Settle it with a timed paper from the harder tier, taken now with no notes and marked honestly. Mid-range or above and the conversation is over. Near the bottom of the range and you have a genuine decision about whether a block of work closes the gap. What should not decide it is which tier feels more comfortable in class, because comfort and capability separate under examination timing. The confirmation deadline belongs to the school, so ask the subject teacher when it falls.

Does a capped maths tier really affect university options?+

It affects post-16 options, which then affect university ones. A Core or Foundation mathematics entry does not position a student for A Level Mathematics or for Higher Level Analysis and Approaches in the IB Diploma, whatever grade they achieve inside the cap. Several schools in this part of Dubai offer both post-16 routes, so the Year 10 form can quietly close a Year 12 door. Raise it explicitly in the tier conversation, because it is frequently presented as an administrative matter.

My child understands the maths but keeps losing marks. Why?+

Most often method marks forfeited by omitted working. The scheme pays for the steps, and a student who can see the answer writes only the answer, collecting one mark where four were available. Across a paper this usually costs more than any single weak topic. The fix is mechanical: have them mark their own scripts against the published scheme wording until they can predict the mark before it is given. That is typically four sessions, not a term.

Which IGCSE maths topics cause the most trouble in Dubai schools?+

Histograms with unequal class widths come first, because frequency density gets treated as optional and the topic is often taught in a hurry. Conditional probability without replacement is second, where the second branch is not adjusted. Three-dimensional trigonometry is third, compounded by calculators left in the wrong angular mode. Vector reasoning is fourth, where the marks sit in the intermediate statements rather than the final vector. Each is a three to five session fix once identified from a marked script.

How do we know if the problem is timing rather than knowledge?+

Test it at home in one evening. Give your child the same past paper twice, once under strict examination timing and once with unlimited time and no notes. If the untimed score is substantially higher, the problem is pacing, and the plan becomes a per-question time budget practised under pressure rather than more teaching. If both scores are low, the marked script will show whether it is content or technique. This single test prevents a term of tutoring aimed at the wrong thing.

What extra charges should we ask about before booking a tutor?+

Six, and ask all of them before the first session. Minimum block commitments that convert a trial into a term. Cancellation windows, which decide who pays when your child is kept at school. Travel surcharges on in-home visits outside a stated radius, which matters in a district bordered by two motorways. Materials charges where a provider sells its own workbooks. Class size, if a group is involved. And whether rates change in the weeks before a series, which is when switching is hardest.

Is a tuition centre in Al Safa a reasonable alternative?+

For broad syllabus coverage, yes. For repairing one topic, it is poor value, because a group class teaching a fixed sequence cannot stop for your child's specific error, which is usually the entire problem. Add two car journeys per session from Al Quoz and the real cost in time exceeds the headline. If the marked script points at histograms and conditional probability, three one-to-one sessions will get further than a term of general class work.

Which formulae does my child have to memorise?+

Fewer than they assume, and the exact provision differs between boards and tiers. It is stated in the current syllabus documents your child's school holds, which we do not reproduce because they are the boards' copyright. The practical step is to ask the subject teacher for the formula provision for the specific paper and tier, then build the memorisation list from what is not given. Students routinely over-memorise and under-practise, which is the wrong way round.

Can we start maths support in the middle of Year 11?+

Yes, and most families do, though earlier is cheaper. Mid-Year 11 work has to be targeted rather than broad: pick one component or topic from marked scripts, fix it, verify it on a timed paper, then decide whether a second block is justified. What mid-year starting cannot do is rebuild two years of algebraic fluency, so if the diagnosis points there, the honest plan is to secure the achievable grade rather than to chase the one that needed starting in Year 10.

Does my child need separate tutors for Maths and Additional Maths?+

Usually not, because 0606 Additional Mathematics is a direct extension of the algebra and functions work in 0580 Extended and the same tutor can hold both. The thing to check is that the tutor has taught 0606 specifically, since it introduces calculus and more formal function work that a general IGCSE tutor may not have covered. A student comfortable in Extended but struggling in 0606 usually has a fluency and speed gap rather than a conceptual one.

How many sessions a week during the eight weeks before the series?+

Two, and no more. The student needs days between sessions to attempt timed papers independently, because that attempt is where the gain is produced and the session is where it is diagnosed. Three or four sessions a week leaves no room for the practice and produces a tired student with the same error log. If two subjects both need work, one session each beats two in whichever feels most alarming this week.

Is the November series a realistic option if June goes badly?+

Yes. Both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel run a November series, and for a candidate in Dubai that is the resit route; the February and March series is offered to India only. Planning a November attempt is actually easier than first-attempt work, because you have the real script and the real grade, so the two or three topics that cost it can be identified precisely. Entry is arranged by the school's exams officer and should be discussed as soon as results arrive.

The code, the tier, the topic

If you came here comparing Al Quoz with Al Barsha or Al Safa, the comparison that matters is not between districts. It is between Cambridge 0580 and Edexcel 4MA1, between the capped tier and the full one, and between the four or five specific errors that produce the same grade for completely different reasons. Send the code, the tier, the school and the last two marked papers, and run the two-paper timing test at home before you call anyone. Lessons run live online into your Al Quoz home on Gulf Standard Time, from the right board's papers and with a block that ends.
