IB Physics Tutor in Al Quoz

An IB physics tutor in Al Quoz is usually wanted because a student who understands the physics is not being paid for it. The marks in this subject sit in places students do not look: uncertainty treatment, gradients with units, and explanations that apply a named law rather than describing what happens. This page names those traps one by one. Lessons are delivered live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Syllabus themes and paper demands set out explicitly
  • Mark-scheme traps named, with what the scheme actually wanted
  • Uncertainty and graph work treated as a taught skill

IB & IGCSE in Al Quoz

Understanding the physics is not the same as being paid for it

The characteristic IB Physics problem is not ignorance. It is a student who can explain a phenomenon correctly in conversation, writes something true in the examination, and scores two marks out of five. Parents read the grade as a knowledge gap and buy content teaching. The marked script usually says something else entirely: the answer described rather than explained, the gradient was used without units, the uncertainty was ignored, or the named law that the question was testing never appeared.

That is why this page is built around the mark scheme rather than around the topic list. You will find the syllabus themes with what each is actually tested on, the demands of each paper, a table of the specific traps that recur in marked Al Quoz scripts with what the scheme wanted instead, a proper treatment of uncertainty and graph work, and the internal investigation criteria with an honest account of what a tutor may do with a draft.

Physics also has an unusually sharp divide between Standard and Higher Level, and it is not simply more content. Higher Level questions require longer chains of reasoning held together under time pressure, and a student who copes at Standard Level by answering each part independently finds that strategy fails. The fix is not more topics; it is practice at sustaining an argument across a multi-part question, which is a trainable skill nobody teaches explicitly.

Confirm specifics against the subject guide your child's school holds. The IB revises its guides, the current Physics course differs from its predecessor in how practical and data work is assessed, and we do not reproduce or supply IB documents because they are the organisation's copyright. What this page gives you is the shape of the assessment and the failures that recur within it, both of which outlast any particular revision.

One practical note about Al Quoz before the physics. The district holds its housing in Al Quoz 1, 2 and 3 between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, with the rest given over to warehouses, workshops, showrooms and the Alserkal Avenue arts spaces. Children travel outwards to school in several directions, so a weekday session realistically starts between 5pm and 5.30pm. That is long enough for one full data question and the marking of it, which is the natural unit of a physics session.

The premise, stated plainly: IB Gram delivers one-to-one physics tuition into Al Quoz homes as live online video sessions on Gulf Standard Time, with working shared and annotated on screen. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-person home visits are a service we run in India only. For physics this is a practical advantage, because a data question with a graph and three columns of uncertainties is far easier to work through on a shared screen than on a single printed page between two people.

At a glance

  • The internal scientific investigation carries 20 per cent of the subject grade
  • Uncertainty treatment and graph gradients with units are where data marks go
  • Describe and explain are different command terms with different mark allocations
  • Higher Level demands sustained reasoning across multi-part questions, not just more content
  • UAE IB schools sit the May session; confirm any date with the school's IB coordinator
  • Al Quoz weekday sessions realistically begin between 5pm and 5.30pm

Physics support in Al Quoz is requested at four points, and each needs a different plan. Below, each stage is described by what the assessment demands rather than by the content covered.

DP SLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics, Standard Level

Covers the same thematic structure as Higher Level at reduced depth, assessed by written papers including a data-analysis section, plus the internal scientific investigation at 20 per cent of the grade. Standard Level students can often survive by answering each part of a question independently, which is exactly the habit that caps them in the low sixes.

A common Al Quoz pattern is a student taking Physics at Standard Level as a sixth subject while carrying two heavier Higher Levels, and then giving it the least preparation time. Four well-aimed sessions on command terms and data technique usually move it more than a term of content revision would.

DP HLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics, Higher Level

Additional depth across the themes and markedly longer reasoning chains in extended response work. The internal investigation carries the same proportional weight. The characteristic Higher Level failure is an answer that is correct for the first two steps and then stops, because the student never practised holding an argument across five marks.

Higher Level Physics is the hardest specialism to staff locally in Dubai at a specific hour, which is the practical argument for online delivery. In the weeks before the May session the early-evening slots for this subject are the first to fill across the whole corridor around Al Quoz.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Sciences

Assessed against four criteria including inquiring and designing, and processing and evaluating, which are the direct ancestors of the Diploma investigation. A student who learns in Year 10 to state a hypothesis with a reason, control variables deliberately and quantify uncertainty writes a far stronger investigation two years later.

This is the cheapest physics intervention available to an Al Quoz family and almost nobody books it, because in MYP nothing is yet at stake. The schools in the Al Barsha and central corridor clusters run MYP on different Personal Project and assessment calendars, so the pressure points vary.

BRIDGEAges 15-17 · Years 11-12

IGCSE to Diploma physics transition

IGCSE physics rewards recall of a correct statement and a correct substitution. Diploma physics rewards the application of a named principle, the justification of a step and the quantification of uncertainty. The content gap is modest; the assessment gap is large, and it is the assessment gap that produces the DP1 grade drop.

A summer block of four to six sessions between Year 11 and DP1, spent on command terms, uncertainty arithmetic and graph conventions, prevents the first-term fall that families then spend a year repairing. It is the single best use of a holiday for a prospective Higher Level physics student.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics is best organised by what is assessed rather than by chapter. Below are the content areas and components Al Quoz students most often need, each with the specific failure that recurs in marked work.

Motion, forces and momentum

SL and HL

Kinematics, Newton's laws, momentum and impulse. The recurring failure is an answer that states what happens to an object rather than naming the law that makes it happen, which forfeits the explanation marks even when the physics is understood.

Work, energy and power

SL and HL

Energy transfer, efficiency and power calculations. Students lose marks by writing an energy statement without specifying which store the energy moved from and to, and by treating efficiency as a ratio without stating what was wasted.

Thermal physics

SL and HL

Specific heat capacity, latent heat and the gas laws. Characteristic errors are temperature units left in Celsius where kelvin is required, and heat and temperature used interchangeably in written answers, which the scheme treats as a physics error rather than a wording one.

Waves, oscillations and resonance

SL and HL, deeper at HL

Simple harmonic motion, superposition, standing waves and resonance. Phase relationships are where marks go, together with diagrams that are drawn without the labelled features the question specified.

Electricity and magnetism

SL and HL

Circuits, fields, induction and electromagnetic effects. This is the area Al Quoz students most often name as the problem, and the underlying issue is usually circuit reasoning rather than formula recall: an inability to say what happens to current and potential difference when one component changes.

Fields and gravitation

SL and HL, substantially extended at HL

Gravitational and electric fields, potential and energy. Higher Level demands longer derivations, and the marks are lost in the middle of them, where a student who knows the start and the end omits the two steps that were being tested.

Nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL

Radioactive decay, nuclear energy and quantum phenomena. Answers go wrong on conservation statements written loosely, and on explanations that assert a result without reference to the quantisation that makes it necessary.

Data analysis and uncertainties

SL and HL, assessed in a written paper

Absolute and percentage uncertainties, propagation, error bars, lines of best and worst fit and gradient interpretation. Marks here are the most reliably recoverable in the whole subject because the technique is finite and almost always taught in a hurry.

Extended response technique

SL and HL

Holding a chain of reasoning across four or five marks without losing the thread. This is the Higher Level discriminator and it is trainable: the student learns to answer the question asked, in sequence, with each step justified rather than assumed.

The scientific investigation

SL and HL, 20 per cent of the grade

Internally assessed individual work marked against lettered criteria and moderated. The commonest structural failure is a research question whose variables cannot be controlled or measured precisely enough with school equipment, which caps the analysis before any data is collected.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns, selected by what the marked script shows. All are live one-to-one video sessions with shared annotation, and none involves a tutor travelling to a UAE address.

Mark-scheme technique block

Four to six sessions aimed entirely at the gap between what the student knows and what the scheme pays for. Command terms, explanation structure, uncertainty arithmetic and gradient reporting. This is the highest-return physics intervention available and it does not involve teaching any new content.

  • Student marks their own scripts against scheme wording
  • Describe, explain, determine and deduce separated and practised
  • Uncertainty and graph conventions drilled until automatic
  • Ends when the student can predict the mark before it is given

Investigation process coaching

Milestone sessions around the internal scientific investigation, which carries 20 per cent of the grade. The tutor interrogates the research question for measurability, teaches what each criterion rewards, and gives feedback on the student's own drafts. Nothing is written for the student, because the work must be their own.

  • Research question tested against the equipment actually available
  • Uncertainty plan agreed before data collection, not after
  • Criterion-level feedback on the student's own draft
  • Checkpoints set against the school's deadlines

Higher Level extended response block

Two sessions a week across a defined block, working on sustained reasoning across multi-part questions, which is the Higher Level discriminator. Built from timed past-paper extended response questions marked against the scheme, with the chain of reasoning written out and then compressed.

  • Long questions attempted whole, never part by part
  • Each step justified rather than assumed
  • Timed conditions from the second session onwards
  • Error log by command term as well as by topic

Al Quoz families are matched with physics teachers who can read a marked script and say which specific mark-scheme requirement the student missed, rather than concluding that the topic needs revising. That distinction is the difference between four sessions and a term.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Quoz

01

What an IB physics tutor in Al Quoz should establish in the first hour

  • Two marked scripts read before any teaching is planned
  • Content, command terms, data technique and reasoning length separated
  • Level confirmed, because the Higher Level failure mode is distinct
  • Live online delivery with shared working; no tutor at a UAE address

An IB physics tutor in Al Quoz means one-to-one Diploma physics teaching at home on a weekday evening. IB Gram delivers that as a live online session into Al Quoz homes on Gulf Standard Time, with working shared and annotated on screen. No tutor is sent to a UAE address, because in-person home visits are a service we run only in India.

The first hour should not be teaching. It should be reading two marked scripts and separating four possibilities, because they produce the same grade and need completely different plans. One: the student does not know the content. Two: the student knows it and answers the wrong command term. Three: the student knows it and loses the data marks on uncertainty and gradients. Four: the student knows it and cannot sustain reasoning across a five-mark question.

Only the first of those is a content problem, and in practice it is the least common among Al Quoz students who were strong at IGCSE. The other three are technique, they are finite, and they are the reason a student can revise diligently for six weeks and move half a grade. A tutor who starts by re-teaching topics without reading the scripts is treating the most likely diagnosis as the least likely one.

The second thing to establish is the level, because the Higher Level failure mode is specific: reasoning that is correct for two steps and then stops. That is not solved by content and it is not solved by more practice questions attempted in parts. It is solved by attempting long questions whole, writing the chain out in full, and then compressing it.

02

The syllabus as it is actually assessed

Physics content lists are easy to find and not very useful, because they say what is covered and not what is tested. The table below reorganises the same material around the second question: for each area, what is the examiner actually looking for, and what does a student typically write instead.

Two patterns run through the whole table. The first is that explanation marks require a named principle. An answer that says the object slows down is a description; an answer that says the resultant force opposes the motion, so by Newton's second law the acceleration is negative, is an explanation. Students who are confident in physics often write the first kind because the second feels laboured, and the scheme pays only for the second.

The second pattern is units and specification. Gradients reported without units, temperatures left in Celsius where kelvin is required, energy statements that do not say which store the energy left, diagrams drawn without the features the question named. Each is a single mark. Across a paper they add up to more than any topic.

Confirm the current content and assessment structure against the subject guide your child's school holds. The IB revises its science guides, and the current Physics course differs from the previous one in how practical and data work is assessed. We do not reproduce or supply those documents because they are the IB's copyright, so the subject teacher remains the authority on what this year's cohort sits.

03

The papers, and what each one rewards

The written assessment separates two quite different skills, and students who are good at one are frequently weak at the other without realising the distinction exists. One paper tests breadth and speed: recognition, quick application and a data-analysis section built on an unfamiliar experiment. The other tests depth: structured questions and extended response work where a chain of reasoning has to hold.

The data-analysis work deserves naming separately because it is the most recoverable block of marks in the subject. It is finite: absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, error bars, lines of best and worst fit, gradient with units, and an interpretation sentence. That list is short enough to be taught properly in three or four sessions, and it is almost always taught in a rush because it sits alongside everything else.

Extended response is the opposite: not finite, and only improvable by practice with marking. The method that works is unglamorous. Attempt the whole question, write the reasoning out in full including the steps that feel obvious, mark it against the scheme, then rewrite it compressed. Students resist the full write-out because it feels slow, and it is the only thing that reliably stops the two-step collapse.

There is one more distinction worth drawing, because it changes how a block is planned. The multiple-choice work is improved by volume and an error log; the extended response work is improved by depth and rewriting. A student given more multiple choice because it is easy to set will get faster at something they were already adequate at, while the component actually costing them marks goes untouched. Match the practice to the failure rather than to convenience.

Confirm the current paper structure, durations and weightings with your child's subject teacher, since the structure of IB science assessment changed with the recent guide revision and the school holds the authoritative version for this cohort.

04

The mark-scheme traps, named

These are the specific failures that appear again and again in marked physics scripts from Dubai schools. None of them is a gap in physics. Every one of them is a gap between what the student wrote and what the scheme required, which means every one of them can be closed without learning any new content.

The most expensive is describe offered where explain was asked. The command terms are not stylistic; they define the mark allocation. Describe asks what happens, explain asks why, determine asks for a value with working, and deduce asks for a conclusion reached from given information. A student who answers the wrong one can write a paragraph of correct physics and score nothing, which feels so unjust that students argue with it instead of adapting, and the argument costs them the next paper too.

The second most expensive is a gradient or intercept used without units or without saying what it represents physically. A graph question frequently carries marks for the gradient value, the units and the physical interpretation as three separate things, and students routinely collect one of the three. The fix is a habit rather than a lesson: every gradient gets a value, a unit and a sentence.

The rest are listed in the table. Work through them with marked scripts rather than in the abstract, because the point is not to recognise the trap in a list but to see where your own child walked into it last month.

05

Uncertainties and graphs, done properly

  • Absolute and percentage uncertainty, converted fluently in both directions
  • Propagation through products, quotients and powers, practised to automaticity
  • Error bars that reflect the measurement, with best and worst fit lines drawn
  • Gradient reported with value, unit and physical meaning, every time
  • Significant figures justified by the least precise measurement

This is the most recoverable block of marks in IB Physics and the one most often left to accident. The technique is finite, which is unusual and extremely useful: there is a list, the list is short, and a student who can execute the list reliably stops losing those marks entirely.

The list runs roughly as follows. Distinguish absolute from percentage uncertainty and convert between them without hesitating. Propagate correctly through addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and powers. Decide how many significant figures the data actually supports. Plot with error bars that reflect the uncertainty rather than decorating the graph. Draw lines of best and worst fit and use the difference to estimate the uncertainty in the gradient. Report the gradient with its unit and say what it represents physically.

That is three or four sessions of work for most students, and it transfers directly to the internal investigation, where the same skills are assessed against the criteria and carry a share of 20 per cent of the grade. A student who learns uncertainty properly in DP1 collects those marks twice, in the investigation and in every data question thereafter.

The reason it goes untaught is structural rather than anyone's fault. It sits alongside the content in a crowded two-year course, it feels like arithmetic rather than physics, and students who are confident in physics find it tedious. That combination is exactly why it is reliably available as a source of recovered marks for anyone willing to spend three sessions on it.

06

The internal investigation, and what a tutor may touch

The internal scientific investigation carries 20 per cent of the physics grade, is marked by the school against lettered criteria and is moderated by the IB. Across the competitor pages researched for Dubai IB queries, not one names a single criterion, which is a remarkable omission for a fifth of a grade.

The structural failure is almost always in the research question rather than in the execution. A question whose variables cannot be controlled or measured precisely enough with the equipment actually available in a school laboratory caps the analysis and evaluation criteria before any data exists. This is fixable in an afternoon at the design stage and unfixable three weeks later, which is why the first session on an investigation should be interrogation rather than encouragement.

The second common failure is uncertainty planned after the fact. A student who collects a single run per condition cannot subsequently produce an uncertainty analysis, and no amount of writing rescues it. The uncertainty plan belongs in the method, before the laboratory session, and that single piece of sequencing is worth more than any later polishing.

On the boundary: a tutor may teach what each criterion rewards, press on the research question until it is measurable, demonstrate uncertainty technique on unrelated practice data, read the student's own draft and say which criterion it currently fails and why, and teach the skill the draft reveals is missing. A tutor may not write, rewrite or complete any part of the investigation. One operator researched for these pages sells completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750; that is an academic honesty breach and the consequence falls on the student. The test after any session is whether your child could explain and defend every change in their own words.

07

Past-paper work that actually produces marks

  • Whole questions, under time, never part by part
  • Marked against the scheme's wording rather than against memory
  • Failures logged by category, not by topic, so patterns appear
  • Two failed answers rewritten to scheme wording each session
  • Board materials cited and linked, never supplied as downloads

Most students do past papers and most students do them in a way that produces very little. They attempt a paper, check the answers, feel reassured by the questions they got right, and move on. That process tells them what they already knew and does not change anything.

The method that works has four steps and students dislike all of them. Attempt the question whole and under time. Mark it yourself against the scheme's own wording, not against your memory of the physics. Log the failure by category, not by topic, so that describe-for-explain across eight questions registers as one pattern rather than eight unrelated slips. Then rewrite two of the failed answers to scheme wording from scratch.

The logging step is the one that matters and the one that gets skipped. A student logging by topic concludes they are weak at waves and circuits. The same student logging by category discovers they lose marks whenever a question says explain, in every topic, which is a four-session fix rather than two months of content revision. The category log is also what makes progress visible to a parent.

On materials: we do not publish or supply IB past papers, mark schemes, grade boundary tables or subject guides as downloads, because they are the IB's copyright and unreleased material carries a malpractice exposure. We reference them, cite the official source and work from what your child's school legitimately provides. A provider advertising those files as a feature is distributing someone else's property.

08

What physics support costs, and what to refuse to pay for

The market figures first, attributed and dated October 2026, because a parent should be able to judge any quote against something. A qualified subject tutor online runs roughly AED 150 to 300 per hour. IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED at AED 650 at the premium end. In-home visits run AED 180 to 500 including travel per Bestimate's 2026 Dubai cost table. Budget online provision starts at Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. None of these is an IB Gram price list; ours is set after the free trial.

What is worth paying a specialist rate for is diagnosis and technique. Reading two marked scripts and identifying that a student loses marks on command terms rather than on content is worth more than twenty hours of content revision, and only someone who knows the scheme can do it. Uncertainty technique, extended response structure and investigation design are the other three places where expertise changes the outcome rather than the atmosphere.

What to refuse is equally clear. General weekly physics support bought with no diagnosis, because it has no target. Content re-teaching of topics the marked script shows the student already knows. Any offer to help with the investigation beyond teaching and feedback. Any provider quoting in a currency you do not pay in, or claiming approval from KHDA, ADEK, the IB or Cambridge, since an independent tutoring platform holds none and we hold none either.

For household context, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in Dubai private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year. Tutoring is the variable line in an education budget, which is the argument for buying defined blocks with review dates rather than an open arrangement that nobody examines until the session has happened.

Starting from Al Quoz, and the limits we disclose

  • Send level, school and the last two marked scripts or the investigation draft
  • Free trial lesson used as a diagnosis, before any payment
  • Honest disclosure when Higher Level cover is unavailable in your slot
  • No grade promises, no claimed approvals, no invented statistics

Send four things: the level, the school, and the last two marked physics scripts or the current investigation draft. A specialist reading those will usually name the failing category in a sentence, and the free trial lesson exists to produce that diagnosis before any payment is made.

What will not be claimed on the call. No grade promise, because nobody can honestly make one. No suggestion that tutoring is required for equivalency, university admission or school progression, which would be a false claim about a regulatory process. No regulator or board approval: IB Gram holds no permit, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and operates no UAE office or centre. No satisfaction statistics, because a figure without its sample, date and method is decoration.

The disclosed limit matters more in physics than in most subjects. Higher Level physics is the hardest specialism to cover at a specific early-evening hour, and in the weeks before the May session those slots fill first across the whole corridor around Al Quoz. When nothing is available you are told, offered the nearest workable alternative and given a realistic view of when the slot opens. Nobody general is substituted for a specialist you asked for.

One last fact worth carrying into any conversation with any provider. Individuals offering private tuition in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, and those operating without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount appears here or anywhere else on this site.

Where we tutor

Al Quoz and the surrounding districts, for scheduling physics

Physics sessions often need an unbroken hour for a data question or a derivation, so the realistic start time matters. Here is what each nearby district does to the weekly slot.

Al Quoz 1, 2 and 3

Housing inside a largely industrial district, with school runs heading out in several directions. A weekday session realistically starts at 5pm to 5.30pm, which is enough for one full data question plus marking.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

Several schools in the district and a 4.30pm start, which suits Higher Level students needing two sessions a week in DP2 without using the weekend.

Business Bay

Towers with no school inside the district and a long run both ways. The practical weekday start is about 6pm, so longer derivation work tends to move to a weekend morning.

Al Jaddaf and Culture Village

Short school runs on the creek side with an IB continuum school nearby. A 5pm weekday session works, with the second weekly slot usually falling at the weekend.

Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Villa communities with nearby schools, giving 4.30pm to 5pm. The extra half hour matters most in the eight weeks before the May session, when two sessions a week becomes the pattern.

Sobha Hartland

Schools inside the community and heavy Higher Level science demand, which means early-evening physics slots here fill first across the whole corridor. Booking the pattern early matters more than the rate.

Downtown Dubai

Long runs in both directions and the latest practical weekday start of this group. Weekend mornings carry investigation work, which benefits from a longer and quieter session.

Al Quoz Industrial 1 to 4

Warehouses, workshops, showrooms and arts spaces rather than housing. Named because a proximity search for a physics tutor in Al Quoz returns results shaped by land use rather than by families.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Quoz

Content gaps, command term errors, data technique and reasoning collapse all produce the same grade and need four different plans of four different lengths. Two marked scripts usually separate them within the first session, and photographs are entirely adequate.

  2. 02

    Separate the four failure categories

The first session reads the scripts and categorises the losses: content, command term, uncertainty and graphs, or sustained reasoning. Three of those four are finite technique problems that respond to three or four sessions without any new physics being taught.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson as a diagnosis

One live session with shared working and annotation. By the end you should have the failing category named, the likely block length, and a straight answer where the honest estimate is shorter than you expected to buy.

  4. 04

    Protect the weekly slot

Physics sessions often need an unbroken hour for a data question or a derivation. Al Quoz families usually hold a 5pm to 5.30pm weekday slot, adding a weekend morning when a Higher Level block needs two sessions and the evenings cannot take them.

  5. 05

    Review against the next paper

The block ends at a stated point and is reviewed against the next timed paper or mock. If the logged category has stopped appearing, stopping is the right recommendation and will be made rather than avoided.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The scheme, not the syllabus, sets the plan

Most IB physics marks are lost between what a student knows and what the scheme pays for. Naming that gap by category, then closing it, usually moves a grade faster than any amount of content revision does.

Uncertainty treated as a finite teachable list

Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation, significant figures, error bars, best and worst fit lines, gradient with units and interpretation. Three or four sessions, and the marks transfer straight into the internal investigation.

Higher Level reasoning trained deliberately

The two-step collapse on a five-mark question is the Higher Level discriminator, and it responds to whole questions written out in full and then compressed. Attempting long questions part by part reinforces exactly the habit that causes it.

Investigation design interrogated before data

A research question that cannot be measured with school equipment caps the analysis criteria before a single reading is taken. That is fixable in one session at the design stage and not fixable afterwards, which is why the sequencing matters more than the polishing.

Clear line on coursework and copyright

Tutors teach criteria and give feedback on the student's own drafts; nobody writes any part of an investigation. Board papers, mark schemes and subject guides are cited and linked rather than supplied, because they are the boards' property.

Rates and limits both stated

AED bands attributed to the providers who published them and dated October 2026, and an honest warning that Higher Level physics is the hardest slot to fill at peak hours before the May session.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Quoz: your questions answered

My child understands physics but scores badly. What is going wrong?+

Usually one of three technique failures rather than a content gap. Describe offered where the question said explain, which can score nothing on a correct paragraph of physics. A gradient reported without its unit or physical meaning, where three separate marks were available. Or uncertainty ignored in a data question. All three are visible in a marked script within minutes and all three are three or four session fixes, which is why the first hour should be reading scripts rather than re-teaching topics.

Does an IB physics tutor come to our Al Quoz home?+

Not through IB Gram. Physics is taught one-to-one into Al Quoz homes over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with working shared and annotated on screen, and we send no tutors to UAE addresses; in-person home visits are an India-only service for us. For physics specifically the shared screen helps, because a data question with a graph and three columns of uncertainties is far easier to work through when both people can annotate the same thing at once.

What is the physics internal investigation worth?+

Twenty per cent of the subject grade, marked by the school against lettered criteria and moderated by the IB. The marks are concentrated in design, data processing, analysis and evaluation rather than in presentation, which is why the research question decides the ceiling. A question whose variables cannot be controlled or measured precisely with school equipment caps the analysis before any data exists, and that is fixable at the design stage and essentially unfixable afterwards.

How is IB physics different from IGCSE physics?+

The content gap is modest and the assessment gap is large. IGCSE rewards a correct statement and a correct substitution. The Diploma rewards application of a named principle, justification of each step, and quantified uncertainty. A student who was comfortable at IGCSE arrives in DP1 with a strategy that quietly stops paying, and the grade falls before anyone identifies the cause. Four to six sessions in the summer between Year 11 and DP1 on command terms and uncertainty prevents most of that fall.

Why does my child lose marks on graph questions?+

Because a graph question typically carries separate marks for the gradient value, its units and its physical meaning, and most students collect one of the three. Error bars are a second source: bars drawn decoratively rather than from the actual measurement uncertainty, with no best and worst fit lines and therefore no gradient uncertainty. It is the most recoverable block of marks in the subject, because the technique list is short and finite, and three sessions usually closes it.

At what stage of the investigation is a tutor actually useful?+

Almost entirely at the start, before any data is collected. A tutor may interrogate the research question until it is measurable with the equipment actually available, teach what each criterion rewards, demonstrate uncertainty technique on unrelated practice data, and read the student's own draft and say which criterion it fails and why. A tutor may not write, rewrite or complete any part of it. After a session your child should be able to explain and defend every change in their own words.

Is electricity really the hardest topic, or does it just feel that way?+

It is genuinely the one Al Quoz students name most, and the underlying difficulty is usually reasoning rather than recall. Circuit questions ask what happens to current and potential difference when one component changes, which requires holding the whole circuit in mind rather than applying a formula. Students who have memorised the relationships can still fail that question. The fix is structured circuit reasoning practice, not more formulae, and it generally takes three or four sessions to become reliable.

What is the two-step collapse in Higher Level answers?+

A student starts a five-mark question correctly, completes two steps, and then stops, having lost the thread of the argument. It is the characteristic Higher Level failure and it is invisible in short-answer practice, which is why students who drill short questions keep meeting it. The remedy is to attempt long questions whole, write the reasoning out in full including the steps that feel obvious, mark against the scheme, then rewrite it compressed. Six to eight sessions of this changes the pattern.

How should my child be using past papers?+

Not the way most students do. Attempt the question whole and under time, mark it yourself against the scheme's own wording rather than against your memory of the physics, then log the failure by category rather than by topic. That last step is the one that matters: logging by topic produces the conclusion that waves and circuits are weak, while logging by category reveals that explain questions lose marks in every topic, which is a four-session fix rather than months of revision.

Do you provide IB past papers and mark schemes?+

No, and you should be cautious about any provider that offers them as a feature. IB past papers, mark schemes, grade boundary tables and subject guides are the organisation's copyright, and unreleased material carries a malpractice exposure as well. We reference them, cite the official source, link to it, and work from what your child's school legitimately provides. The school holds proper access and the subject teacher is the authority on what this cohort actually sits.

Is Standard Level physics worth tutoring if it is a sixth subject?+

Often yes, and usually only briefly. The common Al Quoz pattern is a Standard Level physics student carrying two heavier Higher Levels who gives physics the least preparation time and then loses points on technique rather than content. Four sessions on command terms and data technique typically moves it further than a term of content revision would, because the content was never the problem. The question is whether those points matter to the offer being chased.

What does physics support cost in Dubai at the moment?+

The market, attributed and dated October 2026: a qualified subject tutor online runs roughly AED 150 to 300 per hour, with specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED at AED 650. Budget online provision starts at AED 33 to 65, which suits practice supervision rather than diagnosis. In-home visits run AED 180 to 500 including travel. Ours is set after the free trial, because the block length depends entirely on what the marked scripts show.

How far ahead should we book Higher Level physics support?+

Earlier than feels necessary, because this is the hardest specialism to cover at a specific hour. In the weeks before the May session the early-evening Higher Level physics slots fill first across the whole corridor around Al Quoz, since every DP2 household wants the same time. If you know a block is coming after mocks, agreeing the pattern in advance costs nothing and secures the slot. When nothing is available we say so and give a realistic date rather than substituting someone general.

Can the same tutor take physics and maths?+

Sometimes, and the overlap is genuine, because algebraic fluency pays in both and a student who cannot rearrange an equation under pressure struggles twice. The test is still component-level competence in each subject separately, including the physics investigation and the mathematics exploration, which are different pieces of work with different criteria. If a tutor is strong on Analysis and Approaches but vague about physics uncertainty conventions, two specialists serve your child better than one diary.

Read the script before buying the lessons

IB Physics rewards diagnosis more than almost any other Diploma subject, because a content gap, a command term habit, weak uncertainty technique and a two-step reasoning collapse all produce the same grade and need four different plans. Three of the four are finite and take three or four sessions. Send the level, the school and the last two marked scripts or the current investigation draft, and take the free trial lesson, which exists to categorise the problem rather than to sell you a term. Lessons run live online into your Al Quoz home on Gulf Standard Time.
