IGCSE Home Tutor in Al Safa

Hiring an IGCSE home tutor in Al Safa usually starts with a subject name and should start with a syllabus code. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are both called IGCSE Maths, and they are examined differently enough that a year of the wrong past papers is a year wasted. This page works subject by subject and code by code for the schools around Al Safa. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Al Safa

The code on the entry decides almost everything else

Two children in neighbouring villas in Al Safa can both be in Year 11 studying IGCSE Mathematics and be sitting genuinely different qualifications. One is entered for Cambridge 0580, tiered into Core and Extended, with a grade ceiling attached to the Core route. The other is entered for Pearson Edexcel 4MA1, untiered, with Foundation and Higher papers that work on a different model and a formula sheet positioned differently. The textbook on the shelf may be right for one of them and wrong for the other.

This is the single most common correctable error we find in Al Safa households. A family buys revision guides on the strength of the subject name, the student works through hundreds of questions in the wrong style, and the mock result is read as weakness in the subject. It is not weakness in the subject; it is a year of practice calibrated to somebody else's examination. Checking the code with the school's exams officer takes one email and it is the first thing we ask for.

Beyond the code, the differences that matter are tiering, paper count, grading scale and where the formula information sits. Cambridge tiers many subjects into Core and Extended, with Core capped below the top grades. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE subjects are generally untiered, which removes an entry decision and replaces it with a requirement to match past-paper practice to the right board. Grading also varies: some subjects report on 9 to 1 and others on A* to G, and the two scales are not interchangeable when a sixth form states an entry requirement.

The second theme of this page is where marks actually go, subject by subject. In Mathematics it is method marks lost to unwritten working and misread command words. In English Language it is answering the question the student would have preferred to a question that was asked. In the sciences it is the practical component, assessed in most UAE centres through a written alternative-to-practical paper, which rewards method writing rather than laboratory time. These are diagnosable in a single session from a marked script.

On delivery there is no ambiguity. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and the Dubai in-home market is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel by other providers if a family wants that. Our Al Safa tuition runs one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the past paper and the official mark scheme visible to both people at once.

The pages next to this one in Al Safa cover the Diploma, the Middle Years Programme and individual subjects in depth. This one is about the boards and the codes, because for an IGCSE family in Al Safa that is the thing most likely to be going quietly wrong.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Al Safa family usually meets IGCSE across three stages, and each one needs a different kind of help. Naming the stage is the quickest way to avoid buying the wrong thing.

LOWER-SECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Years 7 to 9, before the syllabus starts

Three years of general curriculum in which the habits that decide IGCSE grades are formed or not formed: showing working, converting units, writing a conclusion that refers to evidence, reading a question twice. Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests sit in March, May and October where a school uses them. Content gaps at this stage are shallow and cheap to close.

In Al Safa this is the stage families almost never book and the stage at which a weekly session pays for itself most clearly. The schools are close enough that a 4.30pm slot is easy, and a child of twelve concentrates better then than at seven in the evening.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE, Years 10 and 11

Two years ending in terminal papers, with the entry decided partway through: board, subject set and, for Cambridge, tier. Most subjects are examined by two or three written papers, with science adding a practical or alternative-to-practical component. The entry deadline sits months before the exam, which is what makes a tier conversation in March too late to matter.

The bulk of our Al Safa IGCSE work sits here, and the shape of the enquiry is consistent: a January mock that disappointed, four months of usable time, and a parent unsure whether the problem is the subject or the preparation. Reading the marked script usually answers that inside one session.

POST16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

After IGCSE: A Level or the IB Diploma

Some schools in the Al Safa cluster run A Level after IGCSE and others run the IB Diploma, with a few offering both. The choice changes the next two years substantially: three or four subjects examined linearly, against six subjects plus an Internal Assessment in each and the Extended Essay. IGCSE grades are the main evidence a sixth form uses when setting entry conditions.

An Al Safa family sometimes has to move a child at sixteen to reach the route they want, because the school that suited a British primary does not always run the post-16 programme they prefer. Knowing that in Year 10 rather than Year 11 is worth more than any amount of late tutoring.

MOEAll year groups in Dubai private schools

Mandatory UAE subjects alongside IGCSE

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum. KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and calculates instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit, advising at least 25 minutes for any mandatory subject lesson.

The consequence for an Al Safa household is a fuller week than the IGCSE subject list implies, and fewer genuinely free evening hours. It is also why these subjects do not count towards the five required for Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, which surprises families every year.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the IGCSE subjects Al Safa families ask for most often, named by code where the code matters. Use this list to say something more specific than the subject name when you enquire; it changes which tutor we put forward.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended

Tiered, with Core capped below the top grades. Most lost marks are method marks that were never written down, plus algebraic manipulation that is accurate but slow. Extended candidates lose ground on functions, transformations of graphs and multi-step problems where the first step is not obvious.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics 4MA1

Foundation and Higher papers

Two papers, with the formula provision and question style differing from Cambridge enough to matter. Students moving between resources find the Pearson questions longer in setup, which rewards reading carefully before calculating anything.

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language 0510 and 0511

Core and Extended

Reading, writing, listening and speaking, with the writing tasks marked for purpose and audience as much as accuracy. The commonest loss is a student writing a competent piece that does not do the task set, which is a planning failure rather than a language one.

Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500

Single tier

Directed writing and composition plus reading response. Strong readers lose marks summarising a passage when the question asks how the writer achieves an effect, and the timing is tight enough that an unplanned composition rarely recovers.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610

Core and Extended

Content-dense rather than conceptually hard, which misleads students into thinking reading counts as revision. Genetics problems need a fixed layout, and extended responses need the command term answered rather than the topic described.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core and Extended

Mole and concentration calculations under time pressure are the reliable difficulty, alongside organic chemistry naming and reaction conditions. Qualitative analysis tests are predictable in form and therefore high-yield revision.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625

Core and Extended

Electricity and electromagnetism cost Extended candidates most, usually because circuit reasoning was never secured. Graph work, units and the difference between a definition and a derivation account for a large share of avoidable marks.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1

Single tier

Untiered, two papers each, with practical understanding examined inside the written papers rather than in a separate component. Question phrasing differs from Cambridge, so past-paper practice has to come from Pearson or the calibration is wrong.

Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450

Single tier

Case-study driven, with marks for application to the specific business in the stimulus. Students who learn definitions and apply them generically plateau, because the mark scheme rewards using the given numbers and the given context.

Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455

Single tier

Diagram accuracy and evaluation decide the grade. A correct diagram drawn without labelled axes earns less than a student expects, and extended answers that explain without judging lose the evaluation marks entirely.

Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478

Single tier

Theory plus algorithm design and pseudocode. The practical difficulty is writing pseudocode that a marker can follow, and trace tables, which students treat as mechanical and then make arithmetic errors in under pressure.

Cambridge IGCSE Arabic as a first language and as a foreign language

Varies by syllabus

Mandatory alongside the licensed curriculum in Dubai private schools, with KHDA requiring separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language. Not counted among the five required subjects for Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

IGCSE support divides by what the marked script shows. A broad content gap, a narrow topic, a technique problem or a board mismatch each need a different shape of block.

Weekly one-to-one across a term

A 60-minute session each week on one subject, paced against the school's own scheme of work and the correct board's past papers. This suits a Year 10 student or an early Year 11 with real runway, and it is the format where content can genuinely be taught rather than patched.

  • Fixed weekday slot, usually from 4.30pm for Al Safa households
  • Past papers from the student's own board from the first month
  • Paced against the school's scheme of work, not a generic order
  • Session recordings available before class tests

Board-correction block

For the student who has been practising the wrong board. Four to six sessions resetting the past-paper diet, learning the question style of the correct code, and re-sitting familiar topics in the unfamiliar format. The content is usually fine; the calibration is not.

  • Starts by confirming the code with the school's exams officer
  • Rebuilds practice entirely from the correct board's papers
  • Focuses on question setup and phrasing rather than content
  • Short and finishable, with a stated endpoint

Single-topic repair

Two to four sessions on one diagnosed weakness: electricity in 0625, moles in 0620, functions in 0580, evaluation marks in 0455. Scoped from the actual mock script rather than from a general impression, and much cheaper than a term bought out of worry.

  • Scoped from the marked paper, not from a conversation
  • Two to four sessions with a stated finish point
  • Closes with a timed set of questions on that topic alone
  • No rolling commitment after the topic is secure

Pre-series intensive

Two sessions a week for six to eight weeks before the papers, planned backwards from the first exam. Opens with a timed paper marked against the official scheme, allocates each fortnight to named topics, and stops teaching new content in the final fortnight by design.

  • Diagnostic paper first, marked with the student present
  • Named topics per fortnight, agreed in writing
  • Final fortnight is timed practice and mark-scheme reading only
  • Weekend slots available when weekday evenings are full

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Safa

01

What parents in Al Safa mean by an IGCSE home tutor

  • IB Gram does not provide home visits in the UAE; UAE lessons are online and one-to-one
  • The Dubai in-home market exists and publishes AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel
  • Teaching the right syllabus code matters more than living nearby
  • Accountability comes from written diagnosis, named targets and recordings

The search phrase is about the home, but the need usually is not. What families want is somebody who knows the schools here, who can be held to something, and who will turn up. Those are fair expectations and they deserve a direct answer rather than a redirection into marketing.

The direct answer on format: IB Gram does not sell home visits in the UAE. Home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Al Safa tuition is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. The in-home market in Dubai is genuine and is published at AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel by Bestimate and by independent home tutors, so a family who specifically wants somebody in the room has somewhere to go, and this page will not pretend they do not.

The direct answer on what actually matters: whether the tutor teaches the right code. An Al Safa student entered for Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 needs a tutor who works from Pearson papers and knows where the formula provision sits. A tutor living four streets away who works from Cambridge 0580 resources is a worse match than a specialist who happens to be elsewhere, and no amount of proximity changes that.

The direct answer on accountability: it comes from documents rather than presence. A written diagnosis after the first session, a named topic list by fortnight, a halfway review on comparable questions, and a session recording a parent can watch. That is more checkable than a tutor at a kitchen table, and it does not depend on who lives nearby.

02

Cambridge against Pearson Edexcel for the same subject

The two boards most Al Safa schools use are Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel, and they differ in ways that change how a student should prepare. Cambridge tiers many subjects into Core and Extended, with the Core route capped below the top grades. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE subjects are generally untiered. That single difference removes an entry decision on one board and creates a significant one on the other.

Exam series differ in their practical detail too. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sits in May/June and November, and the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026; June 2026 results reached students on 20 August 2026 and November 2025 results reached them on 22 January 2026.

Cambridge adds an administrative layer families often miss. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. Ask your child's exams officer which zone the school sits in and read paper times off that version only.

A caution on the February and March series, which has misled UAE families before. That series is offered to India only. UAE candidates sit June and November. Any revision plan or deadline built around a February or March Cambridge window is wrong for a child sitting exams in Dubai, and the correction is worth making immediately if a household has been working to one.

Grading scales, and why a sixth-form requirement can be misread

IGCSE results do not all arrive on one scale. Depending on the subject and the board, a grade may be reported on 9 to 1 or on A* to G. Both are in current use, and the two are not directly interchangeable. A sixth form stating an entry requirement of grade 6 and a family holding a certificate showing a B have to do a translation, and getting it wrong in either direction causes avoidable distress.

The practical rule is to ask the receiving school to state the requirement in both scales, in writing, for the specific subject. Al Safa students regularly apply to schools that use a different convention from the one their own school reports in, particularly when moving between a Cambridge-heavy and a Pearson-heavy school. The admissions office will have an answer; it just is not usually on the website.

The second thing families misread is what a grade boundary means. Boundaries are set per series, after the papers have been sat, and they move. A student who scored a particular raw mark in one series cannot assume the same mark yields the same grade in the next. That is one reason we do not publish boundary tables: they belong to the boards, they change, and reproducing them would be both a copyright problem and a disservice.

What follows for a revision plan is modest and useful. Work from how many marks a student is losing and where, not from how close a grade looks. Marks are the currency the examiner deals in; grades are the output of an arithmetic a family does not control. A tutor who can point at four specific recoverable marks on a script is more useful than one who discusses a target grade.

What you are looking atWhat it actually tells youWhat to do with it

04

Where IGCSE marks go missing, by subject

  • Maths: method marks lost to unwritten working, recoverable within weeks
  • English: tasks answered to the wrong purpose or audience, fixed by two minutes of planning
  • Sciences: command terms and the alternative-to-practical paper, both coachable
  • Business and economics: application to the given stimulus, plus evaluation marks

Marked scripts are far more informative than reports, and the patterns repeat across subjects. In Mathematics the largest recoverable category is method marks that were never written down. A multi-step question awards marks for the relationship and the substitution as well as the answer, and a student who works mentally and writes one number collects nothing when that number is wrong. Making working visible is a habit, not knowledge, and it is worth several marks a paper.

In English the dominant loss is answering a different question. A student reads about a passage, recognises the topic, and writes what they know rather than what was asked. The directed writing tasks are marked for purpose and audience, so a competent piece aimed at the wrong reader scores poorly. Planning for two minutes before writing is the intervention, and students resist it until they see the mark difference on a timed comparison.

In the sciences it splits three ways. Content gaps are real but smaller than parents expect. Command-term failure is large: describe answers given to explain questions, and no comparative word in a comparison. And the practical component, assessed in most UAE centres through a written alternative-to-practical paper, is neglected because revising it does not feel like revising science, even though it tests clearly specified and coachable skills.

In the humanities and business subjects the losses concentrate in application and evaluation. Business Studies 0450 and Economics 0455 both reward using the specific stimulus provided rather than reciting a framework, and both award evaluation marks that a student who only explains will never earn. That is a writing structure, and it can be taught in a handful of sessions once the pattern is visible on a script.

05

The practical science question when lessons are online

This is the reasonable objection and it deserves a straight answer. A tutor over live video cannot run an experiment alongside your child. What the tutor can do is prepare the component that is examined, which in most UAE centres for Cambridge science is a written alternative-to-practical paper rather than a laboratory assessment. Confirm the component with the exams officer, because it varies by code and centre.

That paper tests a narrow and specific set of skills. Identifying independent, dependent and control variables. Describing a method in a sequence somebody else could follow. Reading an instrument to the correct precision. Plotting and interpreting a graph. Spotting an anomalous result and saying why it is anomalous. Suggesting an improvement that addresses the actual source of error rather than repeating a generic line about repeating the experiment. Every one of those is a writing and reasoning task.

For Pearson Edexcel sciences the practical understanding is examined inside the two written papers rather than in a separate component, which changes the preparation rather than removing it. Students still have to describe methods and interpret data, and they still lose marks for sequence and precision. The difference is that the questions arrive mixed in with theory rather than grouped.

The hands-on work belongs to the school and should. Where a tutored hour adds value is translation: a student who has done the experiment and still cannot describe it in the examiner's language is losing marks on something they already understand. Sitting with the official mark scheme and rewriting their own method until it earns the marks is the highest-return hour available in the month before a series.

06

What the travel premium actually buys an Al Safa family

Set the comparison up as a price difference rather than a philosophy. Published in-home one-to-one rates in Dubai run AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, per Bestimate's 2026 table and independent home-tutor listings. Published qualified online subject tutor rates run AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150. The spread between those two bands is roughly AED 100 to 200 an hour, and the honest description of what it purchases is a car journey.

For Al Safa the journey is short in distance and awkward in timing. The neighbourhood sits inside its own school catchment, so a tutor living in Al Safa or Al Wasl has a quick run, while anyone else is crossing Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Wasl Road at pick-up. That shrinks the in-home pool to whoever is both nearby and free at 4.30pm, and being nearby and free is not the same as teaching Pearson 4CH1 well.

Below both bands sits the budget end, which deserves a fair hearing rather than dismissal. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65; the budget online band overall is AED 45 to 150. For a Year 8 student who needs structure and someone to check that homework has been attempted properly, that band can be enough. For a Year 11 student eight weeks from a series who needs mark-scheme-level diagnosis, it generally is not.

Above both sits the specialist band at AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate AED 200 to 450 plus, and the premium band at AED 500 to 650, where BartyED publishes AED 650. Monthly, Bestimate estimates weekly one-hour sessions at AED 240 to 600 budget, AED 600 to 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work, against advertised packages of AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. Every figure here belongs to the named provider; none is ours.

MoE equivalency, and the five subjects that count

Al Safa families planning a UAE university route meet equivalency eventually, and meeting it in Year 10 is better than meeting it in Year 13. For the British track the Ministry of Education requires a pass in five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level with the same grade.

The detail that matters for subject selection is this: Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE or IGCSE count. A student taking exactly five subjects of which two are Arabic and Islamic Education does not have five that count. One ranking competitor in this market publishes a six-subject requirement for UAE candidates, which is not what the sourced clarification states, so it is worth reading the rule rather than a summary of it.

For the American track the same clarification sets English proficiency at a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, with mathematics requiring at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. No IB points threshold appears in that source, so no IB equivalency figure should be published or trusted without a moe.gov.ae page behind it.

Two boundaries. Equivalency and attestation are processes the Ministry and the emirate authorities run; IB Gram does not perform them, speed them up or guarantee an outcome, and we point parents to the official channel. And tutoring is not required for equivalency, for university admission or for school progression. What IGCSE tutoring can do is affect the grades that feed the subject count, which is a narrower and more honest claim than the one some pages make.

KHDA, the regulator map and the mandatory subjects

Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects schools annually. For an Al Safa parent the useful habit is to read the current published band on KHDA's own listing rather than a rating quoted on a third-party page, which may be two inspection cycles old.

Elsewhere in the country the map differs, which matters on relocation. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge does the same there, and both approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. The Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. ADEK is named by almost none of the competitor pages in this market.

On mandatory subjects, the federal position is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, while adhering to the Ministry's general regulations. In Dubai, KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and prohibits combined classes for the two groups. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit.

KHDA also sets the language of instruction for these subjects and requires schools to ensure that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval to teach them, which is a credential a parent can ask a school about directly. For the mandatory subjects, using different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is strictly prohibited, which constrains how any Arabic or Islamic Education tutoring material can be described.

09

Permits, honesty and what we do not claim

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit and a parent may reasonably ask about it. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students.

MoHRE's service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, listing no fees and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so any figure circulating online is unverified until found on an official source.

An operation with premises and staff in Dubai is legally different from an individual tutor: it requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. IB Gram holds no such permit and occupies no UAE premises, and no page of ours should suggest that a regulator or an examination board has approved or accredited us, because none has.

The academic-honesty boundary belongs in the same section because it is the same kind of promise. A tutor teaches, questions, reviews and gives feedback on work the student has produced. A tutor does not write, complete or dictate coursework or any assessed work. One seller in this market advertises completed Internal Assessments at a published price; that is an academic-integrity breach and the consequence falls on the student. We also reference syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes at their official source rather than reproducing them.

Where we tutor

Al Safa and the communities that share its catchment

An IGCSE session gets booked around when the student gets home. These are the areas around Al Safa we are asked about, with what the school run actually permits in each.

Al Safa 1

Villa streets off Al Wasl Road with several British secondaries within walking distance. Early arrival home means a 4.30pm IGCSE slot is reliable, and a 4pm start works for students at the nearest schools.

Al Safa 2

Bordering Al Quoz 1 across Sheikh Zayed Road. Slightly longer runs, and a higher proportion of households that end up taking Saturday morning sessions because weekday evenings fill with activities.

Al Wasl

Inland along Al Wasl Road, sharing the Al Safa catchment almost completely. A slot that works for one works for the other, which helps where two families want consecutive sessions with the same tutor.

Jumeirah 2

Coastal and school-dense. Beach Road congestion at pick-up pushes the first reliable slot to 5pm in the cooler months, and mock-week rescheduling is more common from here.

Jumeirah 3

Towards Umm Suqeim, feeding the Jumeirah secondaries. Longer school runs, so Year 11 students here more often take one weekday evening plus one weekend morning rather than two weekday slots.

Umm Suqeim

Along the coast towards Burj Al Arab with mixed British and IB provision. In the ten weeks before a series, families here commonly move sessions to Friday afternoon rather than fight the evening run.

Al Manara

Inland of Umm Suqeim near Al Khail Road. Smaller villa community with children spread across school groups, so sibling bookings often span two different boards at once.

Al Quoz 1

Across Sheikh Zayed Road, closer than it looks off-peak and much further at 3pm. Several schools on its edges take Al Safa children, and returning buses from here are the latest arrivals.

City Walk

Apartment living with a younger demographic. For an IGCSE student the practical issue is a quiet space for a 90-minute timed paper rather than connection quality, which is usually fine.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Safa

British-curriculum secondaries serving Al Safa

Students we support attend these schools. The detail worth checking before buying any revision material is which board each school enters for each subject, because a school can run Cambridge for the sciences and Pearson Edexcel for mathematics in the same year group.

  • Jumeirah College, Al Safa
  • Horizon English School, Al Safa
  • Safa British School, Al Safa
  • Latifa School for Girls, Al Safa
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Jumeirah
  • Jumeirah Primary School, Al Safa

Schools within a short drive Al Safa families also use

The wider set, including IB continuum provision, for families weighing the post-16 route. KHDA inspects Dubai private schools annually and publishes a band for each on a six-point scale; the current band on KHDA's own listing is the one to read.

  • Dubai College, Al Sufouh
  • Kings' School Dubai, Umm Suqeim
  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Raffles World Academy, Umm Suqeim
  • Safa Community School, Al Quoz 1

Named schools appear as context for the Al Safa education market only; IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the syllabus code from the exams officer

One email to the school settles the most consequential question: which board and which code, per subject. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 need different past papers and different practice, and a family can be a year into the wrong one without anybody noticing.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson on a past-paper question

The trial runs on a real question from the correct board rather than as an introductory chat, so you can see whether the tutor's explanation lands with your child. No payment and no card are needed, and if the fit is wrong we will try a different tutor.

  3. 03

A diagnostic from the marked script

Send the most recent marked paper. The first session sorts lost marks by cause rather than by topic: method marks not written, command terms missed, content genuinely absent, or time run out. Those four need completely different work.

  4. 04

A written topic plan by fortnight

You get the block mapped out: which topics in which fortnight, when new teaching stops, and which papers your child sits between sessions. A visible plan makes a cancelled session's cost visible too, which tends to protect the slots.

  5. 05

Fixed slots on Gulf Standard Time

Sessions are booked on GST around the Al Safa school run, usually from 4.30pm on weekdays with weekend mornings available. Ramadan slots shift later, including post-Iftar timings, and that is agreed in advance rather than improvised each week.

  6. 06

    Halfway check on comparable questions

Midway through the block the same question types come back and the marks are compared. If they have not moved on the targeted cause, the plan changes or the tutor does, rather than the block continuing because it was already booked.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We ask for the code before the subject

Matching on Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 rather than on the word chemistry is the difference between useful practice and a year of wrongly calibrated questions. It is the first question we ask and it costs a parent one email to answer.

The February and March series warning, in writing

Cambridge's February and March series is offered to India only; UAE candidates sit June and November. Plans built around a February window are wrong for a child in Dubai, and we say so because that error has reached UAE parents before.

Rates published with their sources

Every AED figure carries the provider or table that published it so a parent can verify it. Three of the strongest pages in this market publish no price at all and two quote USD, a currency UAE families do not transact in.

The equivalency rule, correctly stated

Five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count. A ranking competitor publishes a six-subject requirement; we publish the sourced rule and tell you to verify it on moe.gov.ae.

Coverage limits stated before payment

If no suitable specialist is free for a narrow code in your window we say so rather than putting a generalist in the slot, and we tell you where the tutor is based. No competitor page we examined discloses a coverage limit at all.

No badges we do not hold

IB Gram holds no regulator or examination board approval, accreditation, licence or partnership, operates no UAE premises, and does not perform Ministry of Education equivalency. Every one of those claims appears somewhere in this market and none of them is ours.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Safa: your questions answered

How do I find out which IGCSE board and code my child is entered for?+

Email the school's exams officer and ask for the board and syllabus code for each subject. It is a one-line answer and it is the most useful information a parent in Al Safa can hold. Cambridge codes look like 0580, 0610, 0620 and 0625; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE codes look like 4MA1, 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. Schools sometimes use different boards for different subjects in the same year group, so ask subject by subject rather than assuming one answer covers everything your child sits.

Are Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE the same qualification?+

They are comparable qualifications examined differently, and the differences matter for preparation. Cambridge tiers many subjects into Core and Extended, with Core capped below the top grades; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE subjects are generally untiered. Question style and setup differ, the formula provision in maths and physics sits differently, and Cambridge science commonly uses a written alternative-to-practical component. Universities treat both as international GCSEs. The practical consequence for a family is simply that past-paper practice has to come from the board your child is actually entered for.

What does Core and Extended mean for a student in Al Safa?+

In Cambridge tiered subjects they are two separate entries with different papers. Extended covers the core syllabus plus supplementary content and keeps the full grade range available; Core covers less and is capped below the top grades however well a student performs. The decision is made by the school, usually in Year 11, and it closes at the entry deadline. The honest way to settle it is one timed Extended past paper marked strictly against the official mark scheme, which turns an impression into evidence in a single session.

Does IB Gram send an IGCSE tutor to our villa in Al Safa?+

No. IB Gram does not provide in-home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Al Safa lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the past paper and official mark scheme on a shared screen and a recording available afterwards. We target the home-tutor search because that is the phrase parents use, then answer it honestly rather than implying a service we do not sell. The Dubai in-home market exists and publishes AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel.

How much does an IGCSE tutor in Al Safa cost per hour?+

Market bands, each attributed to its publisher: budget online and student tutors AED 45 to 150, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. Qualified online subject tutors AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. In-home visits AED 180 to 500 including travel, Bestimate quoting AED 180 to 350. IGCSE specialists AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase at AED 270. None of these is an IB Gram price. We quote against a plan after the free trial rather than publishing a rate card on a landing page.

When do UAE students sit IGCSE exams?+

UAE candidates sit the June and November series. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sits in May/June and November; the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. The February and March Cambridge series is offered to India only and should be ignored entirely by a family in Dubai. Always read the live official timetable, and for Cambridge the correct zone version.

Why does my child lose marks in maths when the answers are right?+

Usually because the method is not on the page. Multi-step questions award marks for the relationship written down and for the substitution as well as for the final answer, so a student who works mentally and writes one number collects nothing when that number is slightly wrong. This is a habit rather than a knowledge gap, which is why it is one of the fastest things to repair. Two or three sessions of writing every step on familiar questions, marked against the official scheme, usually changes the pattern permanently.

How many IGCSE subjects does an Al Safa student need for UAE equivalency?+

The sourced Ministry of Education requirement for the British track is a pass in five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited A Level at no less than E or two AS Levels at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five. That matters for subject selection, because a student taking five subjects of which two are Arabic and Islamic Education does not hold five that count. Verify the current rule on moe.gov.ae before acting on it.

How are IGCSE science practicals assessed if my child studies online?+

In most UAE centres Cambridge science practical skills are examined through a written alternative-to-practical paper rather than a laboratory assessment, though the component varies by code and centre, so confirm with the exams officer. Pearson Edexcel examines practical understanding inside the two written papers. Either way the assessed skills are writing and reasoning: variables, method sequencing, instrument precision, graph interpretation, anomalies and genuine improvements. Those can be prepared properly with the question on a shared screen. The hands-on work belongs to the school, and that is where it should stay.

My child's mock was disappointing and there are four months left. What now?+

Start with the marked script rather than the grade, and sort the lost marks into four causes: method not written, command term not answered, content genuinely absent, and time run out. Those need entirely different work, and most students have one dominant cause rather than four. Then plan backwards from the first paper in fortnights, with content teaching finishing well before the end and the final fortnight reserved for timed papers and mark-scheme reading. Four months is a comfortable amount of runway if it is planned and very little if it is not.

Which IGCSE subjects do students around Al Safa struggle with most?+

Across the Al Safa and Jumeirah cluster the recurring requests are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, with English as a Second Language close behind for students who are academically strong but writing to the wrong purpose. In maths the difficulty is usually algebraic fluency rather than topic knowledge. In physics it is electricity and circuit reasoning. In chemistry it is mole calculations under time pressure. In the business and economics subjects it is application to the stimulus and the evaluation marks, which are a writing structure rather than content.

Can one tutor cover two or three IGCSE subjects for my child?+

Sometimes, and it depends on the stage and the pattern. For Years 7 to 9, and for a student whose problem is technique rather than content, one tutor working across subjects is efficient and cheaper: method writing, command terms and timed practice are the same skills everywhere. For separate Extended entries in Year 11 where one subject is genuinely weak, a specialist in that subject is better value than a generalist covering three. The marked scripts usually make the right answer obvious.

Is a 9 to 1 grade the same as an A* to G grade?+

No, and they should not be mapped casually. Both scales are in current use depending on subject and board, and a sixth form stating a requirement in one while a certificate reports in the other creates a translation a family has to get right. Ask the receiving school to state the requirement for the specific subject in both scales, in writing. Separately, grade boundaries are set per series after the papers are sat and they move, so an old boundary cannot be used to predict what a raw mark will be worth.

Can a tutor help with IGCSE coursework where a subject has it?+

Only within clear limits. A tutor may teach the skills the task requires, explain what the assessment criteria ask for, question a student's plan, and read work the student has written and say where it falls short. A tutor may not write, rewrite to completion or dictate any part of work submitted for assessment. We also reference syllabus documents and mark schemes at their official source rather than reproducing them. Any provider offering to produce coursework is offering something whose consequences fall on your child, not on them.

What time can an IGCSE session start for a family in Al Safa?+

Al Safa sits inside its own school catchment, so arrival home is earlier than in most Dubai communities and a 4.30pm start is reliable on most weekdays, with 4pm workable for students at the nearest schools. From Jumeirah 2 and Jumeirah 3 the first realistic slot is 5pm because of Beach Road congestion at pick-up. Saturday mornings are widely used where weekday evenings are full. Slots are booked on Gulf Standard Time and move later during Ramadan, including post-Iftar timings, agreed in advance.

Do I need to check that a private tutor in Dubai holds a permit?+

It is a fair question to ask. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers school-registered teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, listing no fees and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published.

Confirm the code, then book the trial

The highest-value thing you can do today costs one email. Ask the exams officer for the board and syllabus code for each of your child's IGCSE subjects, and check that the revision material on the shelf matches. If it does not, that alone explains a good deal of what has been going wrong. Then send the most recent marked script and book a free trial lesson on a question from the correct board, so you can watch the tutor explain the gap between your child's answer and the mark scheme rather than talk about ambitions. Lessons run online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, around the Al Safa school run.
