IB Physics Tutor in Al Safa

Families looking for an IB physics tutor in Al Safa are usually comparing something: physics against the other two sciences their child could have taken, Higher Level against Standard, or a tuition centre against one-to-one help. This page makes those comparisons with the detail attached, because physics is the Diploma science where the wrong comparison costs the most. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Maths load diagnosed before any physics content is taught
  • Investigation feedback given as questions on the student's own draft

IB & IGCSE in Al Safa

Physics is not a harder version of the other sciences

Parents in Al Safa frequently arrive with a reasonable but misleading model: that chemistry, biology and physics are three versions of the same task at different difficulty levels, and that a student struggling in physics is struggling with science. The three subjects actually fail differently, and physics fails in a way that is specific enough to be worth describing, because the remedy is different from what the model would suggest.

Biology punishes imprecision in language and rewards volume of accurate recall. Chemistry punishes unstated assumptions and dropped signs, and rewards disciplined calculation. Physics does something else: it punishes students who describe what happens when the question asked why, and it makes a student's mathematics visible in a way no other science does. A physics question about a circuit is frequently an algebra question wearing a circuit diagram, and a student whose rearranging is slow will fail it while understanding the physics perfectly.

That has an immediate consequence for how a physics tutor should start. Before any content is taught, the question is what the student's maths course and level are, and how comfortable they are with rearranging, with proportional reasoning and with handling powers of ten. A Higher Level Physics student taking Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level is carrying a structural mismatch that will appear in every paper, and knowing that in Diploma 1 rather than in Diploma 2 changes what can be done about it.

This page therefore compares the things that matter. Physics against chemistry and biology on what each one examines and where each loses marks. Higher Level against Standard Level, including where the extension lands. The two maths courses against the physics content that depends on them. The three ways a family can buy help, with the published rates. And the IGCSE practical a student has just left against the Diploma investigation they are about to meet, because the habits do not transfer.

Al Safa itself is relevant for one reason worth naming. It holds an unusual concentration of secondary provision, with Jumeirah College, Horizon English School, Safa British School and Latifa School for Girls in or beside it and Jumeirah Baccalaureate School alongside. That proximity makes a general tutor easy to find locally and a Higher Level Physics specialist hard, because Higher Level Physics cohorts are spread thin across several schools rather than pooled in one. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses in any case; home visits are a service we provide in India only, and physics here is taught one-to-one over live video in a shared workspace where both people can draw. For a subject built on circuit diagrams, free-body diagrams and graphs, that shared drawing space is the part of the format that matters most.

Diploma Physics at Higher and Standard Level

A group four science assessed through two written papers and a scientific investigation. Higher Level carries additional content and longer papers. Both levels provide a data booklet, and both depend substantially on algebraic fluency, proportional reasoning and confident handling of standard form.

Al Safa students take Physics at Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Emirates International School Jumeirah or Raffles World Academy in Umm Suqeim. With International Baccalaureate students around seven per cent of Dubai private enrolment in the 2024-25 KHDA figures, Higher Level Physics cohorts at any single school here are small.

Choosing Physics, and choosing the level

Physics at Higher Level is commonly specified or preferred for engineering, physics and several technology degrees, which means it is often chosen for destination. The decision interacts with the maths choice more than any other subject pairing in the Diploma, and the two should be made together.

Because the Al Safa schools include both A Level and Diploma providers within minutes of each other, families here often decide route and subject in the same fortnight. Taking Higher Level Physics with Standard Level Applications and Interpretation is a combination worth examining carefully before confirming.

MYPAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

MYP Sciences, the route in

Criterion-assessed science across the three disciplines, strong on investigation design and lighter on quantitative work than the Diploma assumes. MYP students generally handle the Diploma investigation comfortably and find the algebra and the standard-form arithmetic harder than expected.

MYP sciences are taught at the IB continuum schools in and near Al Safa. The most useful preparation for Diploma Physics from this route is quantitative rather than conceptual: rearranging, proportional reasoning and powers of ten, practised over the summer before Diploma 1.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Physics, the other route in

Cambridge 0625 or Pearson Edexcel 4PH1 at the Jumeirah-side secondaries. Students arriving from here have good structured-question technique and have usually never designed an investigation, and they meet explanation questions that demand a mechanism rather than a recalled statement.

An Extended-tier IGCSE Physics grade with comfortable algebra is the realistic preparation for Higher Level Diploma Physics. Students who scraped through IGCSE Physics on recall rather than on calculation find Diploma 1 unexpectedly steep, and that is identifiable in the first month.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The physics topics that produce the most work in this cluster, with the specific error in each. Note how many of the errors are mathematical rather than physical.

Kinematics and dynamics

HL and SL

Resolving forces and sign conventions on vector quantities. Most lost marks are a sign chosen inconsistently between two lines of working rather than a misunderstanding of the physics involved.

Work, energy and power

HL and SL

Energy accounting questions where one transfer is omitted. Students conserve energy correctly and forget the term that was dissipated, which the mark scheme treats as an incomplete answer.

Momentum and impulse

HL and SL

Collisions in two dimensions, where the momentum components must be handled separately. The physics is usually understood and the component algebra collapses halfway through.

Thermal physics

HL and SL

Specific heat capacity and latent heat problems with multiple stages. Marks go on students combining stages into one calculation rather than treating them separately, and on temperature units.

Waves and superposition

HL and SL

Path difference and phase relationships. Diagrams are the actual task in many of these questions, and students who answer without drawing lose marks that drawing would have secured.

Electricity and circuits

HL and SL

The single largest source of lost marks across both levels. Potential dividers and internal resistance questions are algebra problems in a circuit diagram, and slow rearranging is fatal under time pressure.

Fields: gravitational, electric and magnetic

HL more deeply

Proportional reasoning: what happens to a field quantity when a distance doubles. Students who can quote the inverse-square law still answer these wrongly because they compute rather than reason proportionally.

Electromagnetic induction

HL mainly

A Higher Level favourite and a reliable source of explanation-question losses. Answers describe the flux changing rather than explaining why an electromotive force results, which is the mark.

Circular motion and oscillations

HL more deeply

Simple harmonic motion at Higher Level, with phase, energy and the defining relationship. Losses come from treating it as a formula set rather than as a condition that either holds or does not.

Atomic, nuclear and particle physics

HL and SL

Mass defect and binding energy, where unit conversion between electronvolts and joules costs more marks than the physics. Decay equations lose marks for unbalanced nucleon or charge numbers.

Uncertainties and data analysis

HL and SL

Propagating uncertainty, significant figures and gradient-based analysis. These marks appear in both papers and in the investigation, and they are among the most recoverable in the subject.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

A student-designed investigation marked against criteria. In physics the commonest failures are a research question with no measurable relationship in it and an evaluation that lists equipment limitations without connecting them to the conclusion.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of Physics support, all delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time in a shared workspace where both people can draw diagrams and work through algebra.

Weekly work with a maths audit first

One tutor, one weekly slot, beginning with an explicit check of the mathematics the physics depends on. Rearranging, proportional reasoning and standard form are diagnosed before any content is taught, because a physics session spent on algebra the student cannot do is a physics session wasted.

  • Maths dependency audited in the first session
  • Aligned to the school's own sequence and laboratory schedule
  • Diagrams drawn by the student, not supplied to them
  • Written notes after each session

Investigation coaching

A short block around the scientific investigation: finding a research question with a genuinely measurable relationship in it, checking the apparatus can resolve the effect, and feedback on the student's own draft given as questions. The tutor does not write, rewrite or complete any part of it.

  • Research question tested for a measurable relationship
  • Equipment resolution checked against the expected effect
  • Uncertainty treatment questioned, not supplied
  • Deadlines mapped to the school's internal calendar

Paper programme before the May session

Full papers to time, marked against the published scheme, with explanation questions assessed specifically for whether a mechanism was given. In physics that one distinction accounts for a large share of recoverable marks and is almost never taught explicitly.

  • Explanation answers marked for mechanism, not content
  • Unit and significant-figure discipline tracked separately
  • Error log by cause, reviewed weekly
  • Fixed session count ending with the series

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Safa

01

Physics against chemistry and biology

The three Diploma sciences are often chosen on reputation and dropped on experience, which is an expensive way to find out how they differ. They examine different things and they fail in different ways, and a student who is strong in one is not automatically suited to another. For a family in Al Safa still deciding, or reviewing a choice early in Diploma 1, the comparison is worth having properly.

Biology is content-dense and language-precise. The volume of material is the main difficulty and the marks go to named structures, named processes and definitions reproduced accurately. Near-synonyms score nothing. Chemistry is calculation-disciplined: assumptions have to be stated, signs have to be right, units carried, significant figures consistent. Its content volume is lower and its procedural demand is higher.

Physics has the lowest content volume of the three and the highest mathematical dependency. A student can know the whole syllabus and still perform poorly if their algebra is slow, because questions about circuits, fields and oscillations are algebra problems with physical context attached. It also has the sharpest distinction between description and explanation: a physics explanation question wants a mechanism, and an answer that restates the phenomenon in different words earns very little.

The practical implication is that the diagnostic question differs by subject. For biology, is the student learning precisely enough. For chemistry, is the student disciplined enough in calculation. For physics, is the student's mathematics fast enough, and do they know what an explanation is. The table sets this out, and it is also a useful document for a Year 11 student still choosing.

02

Higher Level against Standard Level in Physics

The level decision in Physics is more consequential than in most subjects, because the extension is not simply more of the same material. It adds topics with their own mathematical demands, particularly electromagnetic induction, simple harmonic motion handled properly and fields treated with more rigour. Those are also where the difference between a 5 and a 7 at Higher Level is decided.

A student considering Higher Level Physics should check three things honestly. Whether a university course on their shortlist actually requires it, since engineering and physics degrees commonly specify it and many other courses do not. Whether their mathematics course and level support it, because Higher Level Physics with a Standard Level maths course that avoids algebraic work is a structural mismatch. And whether the total Higher Level load is survivable, since Physics plus two other demanding Higher Levels is a heavy combination that a Year 11 student rarely has the information to judge.

Standard Level Physics is a serious qualification and is accepted by a wide range of courses. A student who takes Standard Level and performs strongly is usually better placed than one who takes Higher Level and cannot handle the extension, and that is worth saying because the cultural pressure in a competitive school cluster runs the other way.

Where a student has already started Higher Level and is struggling, the first question is still diagnostic rather than administrative. Losses concentrated in the Higher Level extension topics indicate a content gap that can be closed with direct teaching. Losses spread across all topics including the Standard Level core usually indicate the mathematical dependency is the real issue, and that needs addressing in maths before it is addressed in physics.

03

The maths pairing that decides how physics feels

  • Rearranging with the unknown in a denominator
  • Proportional reasoning without computing
  • Powers of ten in multiplication and division by hand
  • Gradients read from a graph, with units attached
  • A weakness in any of these shows up in every physics topic

Of all the subject combinations in the Diploma, the one that most determines a student's experience is Physics with their maths course. This is rarely discussed at the point the choices are made, and it produces a predictable pattern of difficulty in Diploma 2 that families then attribute to the physics teaching.

Analysis and Approaches builds exactly the algebraic fluency physics requires: rearranging confidently, handling functions, and in the Higher Level version the calculus that makes several physics relationships make sense rather than merely be memorised. Applications and Interpretation is technology-permitted and statistically weighted, which is valuable in its own right and does not build the same by-hand algebraic speed. Neither course is wrong; the mismatch is specific.

A Higher Level Physics student taking Applications and Interpretation can succeed, and will have to do explicit algebraic work that their maths course is not going to provide. The useful move is to recognise that in the first term and schedule for it, rather than to discover it in a Diploma 2 mock and conclude that physics is the problem. A tutor who audits the maths dependency in the first session is doing the single most useful thing available.

The specific skills to audit are short enough to list. Rearranging a formula with the unknown in a denominator. Proportional reasoning: what happens to a quantity when another doubles, without computing. Handling powers of ten in multiplication and division without a calculator. Reading a gradient from a graph and attaching units to it. A student fluent in those four finds physics calculations straightforward; a student slow in any of them loses marks across every topic in the subject.

04

Description against explanation, and where the marks go

If there is one sentence worth taking from this page it is that a physics explanation question wants a mechanism. Students answer them with a restatement of the phenomenon, often fluently, and score a fraction of the available marks. This is the dominant loss in Diploma Physics and it has nothing to do with how well the student understands the subject.

A worked example. Asked to explain why an electromotive force is induced when a magnet moves through a coil, a typical answer says that the magnetic flux through the coil changes as the magnet moves. That is a description of the situation the question just described. The mark scheme wants the chain: the flux linkage changes, a changing flux linkage induces an electromotive force, and the magnitude depends on the rate of change. Three steps, each creditable, and the first answer supplied none of them.

The pattern repeats across the syllabus. Asked why the current falls when a resistor is added, students say the resistance is higher. Asked why a satellite stays in orbit, they describe the orbit. Asked why the amplitude decays, they say energy is lost without naming where it went. In each case the student knows the physics and does not know that the question is asking for causation in steps.

The fix is mechanical and quick, which makes it one of the best uses of early sessions. Identify the command term. If it is explain, write a chain with at least one because in it. Count the marks and produce that many distinct steps. Students who adopt this habit gain marks across both papers without learning any new physics, and the gain is usually visible within three or four weeks.

05

The data booklet, and the equations that are not in it

A data booklet is provided in every Diploma Physics examination, and it contains most of the relationships a student needs plus the constants. Two things follow. There is no value in memorising what the booklet provides, and students waste real hours doing so. And there is substantial value in knowing precisely what it does not provide, because those are the things that must be learned and the list is short enough to be learned properly.

Beyond memorisation, the booklet is a speed skill. Finding the right relationship among several similar ones under time pressure takes seconds for a practised student and a minute for an unpractised one, and a minute a question across a paper is a grade. Practising the search is as legitimate a use of a session as practising the physics, and it is almost never done.

There is a subtler point about selection. Several topics have two or three related expressions in the booklet, and choosing the wrong one produces an answer that looks plausible and is wrong. Knowing which expression applies under which conditions is physics rather than administration, and it is exactly the kind of thing a specialist teaches in a sentence and a textbook takes a page to obscure.

In an online session this is straightforward to practise, since both people can look at the same page and the same question simultaneously. A tutor can watch the student search, time it, and correct the habit. That is a place where a shared screen is at least as good as sitting beside someone, because the search becomes observable rather than invisible.

06

The Diploma investigation against the IGCSE practical

A student arriving in Diploma Physics from Cambridge 0625 or Edexcel 4PH1 has spent two years doing practical work from a method sheet and answering questions about experiments somebody else designed. The Diploma investigation asks them to design one, which is a different activity requiring a different kind of thinking, and it is where the switchers in this cluster most often struggle.

In physics specifically, the commonest design failure is a research question with no clearly measurable relationship in it. A question that asks how one thing affects another needs a quantity that can be varied, a quantity that can be measured, and an effect large enough for the available apparatus to resolve. Students propose investigations where the predicted effect is smaller than the uncertainty in their measuring instrument, which guarantees inconclusive data however carefully the work is done.

Checking that before the practical rather than after is the highest-value hour a tutor spends on a physics investigation. It is also a legitimate kind of help: asking whether the apparatus can resolve the expected effect is teaching experimental reasoning, not writing the report. The same applies to questioning whether a control is actually controlling anything, which is a question students rarely ask of their own method.

On the evaluation criterion, the pattern matches the other sciences. Students list equipment limitations generically. The descriptor wants a specific limitation connected to the specific conclusion drawn, with a realistic improvement. One sentence of that form outperforms a page of generic regret. And the boundary is firm: a tutor may explain criteria, model an unrelated investigation, question a draft and point at gaps. A tutor may not write, rewrite or edit any part of it, and buying a completed internal assessment, which some operators in this market sell, risks the Diploma itself.

Three ways to buy physics help, compared

A family in Al Safa has three realistic options, and they are not interchangeable. The school's own physics provision, which frequently includes a clinic or a revision session at no cost and which a surprising number of households have never asked about. A tuition centre group class, cheaper per hour. And one-to-one work, online or in-home. The right answer depends on the diagnosis rather than on the budget.

Here are the published rates, so any quote has a context. A qualified online subject tutor in Dubai sits at AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors listing IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. Specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level work is quoted at AED 270 by TutorChase, with Bestimate's specialist band at AED 200-450 and above and BartyED publishing AED 650. Budget online runs AED 33-150, with Tutopiya from AED 33-52 and EdFlik from AED 45-65. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180-350 by Bestimate and AED 200-500 by independent home tutors, travel included. Monthly, Bestimate estimates AED 240-600, AED 600-1,200 and AED 1,000-2,000 or more across the three tiers, with packages advertised at around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. All of those are other providers' own published figures.

For physics the scarcity point is sharper than the price point. Higher Level Physics cohorts are spread thinly across the several schools in and around Al Safa rather than pooled, so the local population of people who teach it to examiner depth is very small. Requiring a tutor to be both qualified in it and willing to come to an Al Safa address on a weekday evening removes nearly all of them, and the nearness that Al Safa offers in other respects does not help here.

Our position: no in-home visits anywhere in the UAE, a free trial lesson first, and a fee discussed after the level and the problem are established. If a trial shows that the real bottleneck is maths rather than physics, we will say so, and the right next step may be a maths tutor and the school's own physics clinic rather than anything we sell.

Physics without a laboratory: what online can and cannot do

This objection deserves a straight answer. Laboratory work stays at school, where the apparatus and supervision are. No tutoring arrangement, in-home or online, substitutes for a school physics laboratory, and a provider implying otherwise is overselling something they cannot deliver.

What a tutor works on is the examined part of practical physics, and it is substantial. Variable control and why a particular control matters for a particular measurement. Uncertainty propagation through a calculation. Reading a gradient and attaching units to it. Distinguishing a trend from noise in a results table. Identifying which source of error actually affected the conclusion rather than listing every one that could have. Judging whether apparatus could resolve the effect being investigated. All of those are written skills assessed in both papers and in the investigation.

In practice that is where a large share of recoverable marks sits, because practical reasoning is taught less explicitly than content and students arrive at it with habits formed by prescribed IGCSE practicals. A student who has performed an experiment and cannot write about its limitations precisely is losing marks that have nothing to do with manual skill.

There is also a documentation point that applies to every laboratory session a student attends. Raw data with uncertainties noted rather than rounded values. The apparatus actually used and its precision. Anything that behaved unexpectedly, because that is the raw material of a good evaluation. Any deviation from the planned method. Agreeing in advance what to record converts a laboratory hour into usable evidence, and that conversation is among the most valuable a physics tutor can have.

Nearby areas we cover around Al Safa

Al Safa and the communities around it, with what each means for a weekly physics session. Specialist availability is national rather than local, for reasons the notes explain.

Al Safa 1 and 2

Villa communities with Jumeirah College, Horizon English School, Safa British School and Jumeirah Baccalaureate School in or beside them. Short journeys home make an earlier session feasible, which helps for a quantitative subject.

Al Wasl

The strip running north towards Jumeirah 1, sharing almost the same school set. Pick-up lands between roughly 3.30pm and 4.15pm and Al Wasl Road is slowest from four to six.

Jumeirah 3

Seaward neighbour feeding the same secondaries. Beach Road congestion at pick-up pushes weekday slots later, which matters because calculation work degrades with tiredness.

Al Manara

To the south, feeding both the Al Safa schools and Kings' School Dubai and Raffles World Academy in Umm Suqeim. Longer journeys each way and more variance in arrival time.

Umm Suqeim

Larger sixth forms and IB continuum provision at Raffles World Academy. Diploma physics cohorts here are among the larger in the cluster and still small in absolute terms.

City Walk and Al Bada'a

Inland and apartment-dense, with more children at central Dubai schools where A Level Physics is the more common post-16 route. Different qualification, the same mathematical bottleneck.

Pearl Jumeira and La Mer

Coastal developments at the northern edge of the cluster, with longer journeys to the Jumeirah and Al Safa schools. Travel time is the main constraint on an early weekday slot.

Al Quoz 1

Across Sheikh Zayed Road and the working edge of the cluster. Higher Level Physics specialists are no more available here than anywhere else in Dubai, because cohort size is the constraint.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the level and the maths course

Higher or Standard Physics, and which maths course at which level. Those two together predict most of what a first session will find, because Higher Level Physics alongside a maths course that avoids by-hand algebra is a structural mismatch rather than a teaching problem.

  2. 02

    Send a marked paper

A marked script shows whether the losses are explanation questions answered with descriptions, unit and significant-figure slips, algebra collapsing mid-answer, or genuinely absent content. Those four need different work, and no report card distinguishes between them.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson with a maths audit in it

One full session online at no cost, no card, in a shared workspace where both people draw. It includes an explicit check of rearranging, proportional reasoning and powers of ten, because a physics hour spent on algebra the student cannot do is a wasted physics hour.

  4. 04

Sequence against the laboratory and deadline calendar

The investigation has school deadlines, laboratory access is scheduled, and the May session is fixed. Work follows that order, with a short conversation before each practical about exactly what data and observations to record.

  5. 05

Weekly notes and an error log by cause

A short note after each session, and once paper work begins a running log of lost marks sorted into causes, with explanation-question losses tracked separately because they are the largest single category and the fastest to shift.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The maths checked before the physics

Physics makes a student's mathematics visible more than any other science. Auditing rearranging, proportional reasoning and standard form in the first session identifies a bottleneck that would otherwise be misdiagnosed as a physics problem for a whole term.

Explanation taught as a mechanism

The dominant loss in Diploma Physics is an explanation question answered with a description. Teaching the chain, with a because in it and one creditable step per mark, gains marks across both papers without any new content and usually shows within a month.

Level-matched specialists, reachable

Higher Level Physics cohorts are spread thin across the several schools around Al Safa, so the local specialist pool is tiny. Online delivery means the match is made on subject and level rather than on who will drive to Al Safa on a Tuesday.

The data booklet practised, not memorised around

It is provided in every paper. We establish what it contains, learn only what it omits, and practise the search under time pressure, including which of several related expressions applies under which conditions.

Honest about the laboratory

Practical work stays at school and we do not pretend otherwise. What we teach is the examined practical reasoning: controls, uncertainties, gradients, resolution and evaluation, which is where most of the recoverable practical marks actually are.

Clear about limits and status

No UAE home visits, no Dubai office, no approval claimed from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education, no grade promised, and no IB past papers or data booklets supplied. Home visits are an India-only service.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Safa: your questions answered

My child is fine in chemistry and struggling in physics. Why?+

Most often because physics has the highest mathematical dependency of the three sciences and chemistry does not. Questions about circuits, fields and oscillations are algebra problems with physical context attached, so a student whose rearranging is slow or who is uncertain with powers of ten loses marks across every topic while understanding the physics perfectly well. The other common cause is the explanation habit: physics asks why and students answer what. Both are identifiable from a marked script in about twenty minutes.

What does an explanation question actually want in IB Physics?+

A mechanism in steps, with at least one because in it. Asked why an electromotive force is induced when a magnet moves through a coil, a typical answer says the flux through the coil changes, which simply restates the situation the question described. The scheme wants the chain: flux linkage changes, a changing flux linkage induces an electromotive force, and the magnitude depends on the rate of change. Count the marks and produce that many distinct steps. Students who adopt this habit gain marks within weeks.

Does my child's maths course affect how hard physics will be?+

Substantially, and it is rarely discussed when the choices are made. Analysis and Approaches builds the by-hand algebraic fluency physics requires, and at Higher Level the calculus that makes several physics relationships comprehensible rather than memorised. Applications and Interpretation is technology-permitted and statistically weighted, which is valuable and does not build the same algebraic speed. Higher Level Physics with Applications and Interpretation can work, and it requires explicit algebra practice the maths course will not provide.

Which is harder, Higher Level Physics or Higher Level Chemistry?+

They are hard in different places, which is more useful than a ranking. Chemistry has more content and a higher procedural demand: stated assumptions, correct signs, units carried, consistent significant figures. Physics has less content and a much higher mathematical demand, with the explanation-versus-description distinction sharper than anywhere else in the sciences. A student with strong algebra and a taste for mechanism usually finds physics the better fit; a student who likes thorough procedure often prefers chemistry.

Is Standard Level Physics a problem for engineering applications?+

Frequently yes, and it should be checked rather than assumed. Engineering and physics degrees commonly specify Higher Level Physics, often alongside a Higher Level maths requirement, while many other courses accept Standard Level or do not require physics at all. The reliable method is to build the university shortlist and read each course's own stated entry requirements, including at UAE universities. Do that in Year 11 while the level choice is still open rather than discovering a requirement in Year 13.

Which physics topics cost Al Safa students the most marks?+

Electricity and circuits lead comfortably at both levels, because potential dividers and internal resistance questions are algebra problems in a circuit diagram and slow rearranging is fatal under time pressure. Fields follow, where proportional reasoning is required and students compute instead. Electromagnetic induction is a Higher Level favourite and a reliable source of explanation-question losses. Underneath all of them sits unit and significant-figure discipline, which costs marks in every topic and is among the easiest to recover.

How much of the physics data booklet does my child need to memorise?+

Nothing that is in it, which is more liberating than students expect. The booklet provides most relationships and the constants, so the learning list is only what it omits, and that list is short enough to learn properly. What does need practising is the search: finding the right expression among several similar ones takes seconds for a practised student and a minute for an unpractised one, and knowing which of two related expressions applies under which conditions is physics rather than administration.

Will a physics tutor come to our villa in Al Safa?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we provide in India only. Physics sessions here are one-to-one over live video in a shared workspace where both people can draw circuit diagrams, free-body diagrams and graphs. Watching a student search the data booklet on a shared screen is also genuinely useful, because the search becomes observable and correctable in a way it is not when somebody is leafing through a booklet beside you.

How are physics practicals handled if the tutoring is online?+

The laboratory work stays at school, where the apparatus and supervision are, and no tutoring replaces that. What a tutor works on is the examined part: variable control and why a specific control matters, uncertainty propagation, reading a gradient with units attached, distinguishing trend from noise, identifying which error actually affected the conclusion, and judging whether apparatus can resolve the effect under investigation. Those are written skills assessed in both papers and in the investigation, and most recoverable practical marks sit in them.

What makes a good physics investigation question?+

Three things, and the third is the one students miss. A quantity that can be varied, a quantity that can be measured, and an effect large enough for the available apparatus to resolve. Students regularly propose investigations where the predicted effect is smaller than the uncertainty in their instrument, which guarantees inconclusive data however carefully the work is done. Checking resolution before the practical rather than after is the most valuable hour a tutor can spend on a physics investigation.

What should my child record during a school physics practical?+

More than most students do. Raw data with uncertainties noted rather than rounded values. The apparatus actually used and its precision, since the evaluation depends on it. Anything that behaved unexpectedly, because that is the raw material of a specific rather than generic evaluation. Any deviation from the planned method. Students frequently come back from a laboratory session with data too thin to process properly, and agreeing in advance what to write down turns a laboratory hour into usable evidence.

Is a group physics class at a tuition centre worth considering?+

For broad revision across a cohort moving at a similar pace, sometimes. For the common case it is poor value, because the single most frequent bottleneck in Diploma Physics is one student's mathematics, and a group class cannot address that. Before paying for anything, ask whether your child's school runs a physics clinic. Several schools in and near Al Safa do, it costs nothing, and it is widely underused, which makes it the first thing to try rather than the last.

My child is moving from IGCSE Physics into the Diploma. What is the gap?+

Two things, both predictable. Explanation questions now demand a mechanism rather than a recalled statement, which is a different kind of writing from the structured recall IGCSE rewards. And the investigation is self-designed rather than worked from a method sheet, so the student has to pose a measurable question for the first time. Both are addressable in the first term if they are identified then. A student who passed IGCSE Physics mainly on recall rather than calculation finds Diploma 1 steeper than expected.

How many physics sessions a week do families in this area start with?+

One is usual, rising to two in the final term or when the investigation and paper practice both need attention. The constraint is the student's capacity to do the work between sessions rather than the budget: a full paper takes well over an hour to sit and roughly as long again to review properly. A student booked three times a week has no space to produce the evidence those sessions exist to diagnose, and past that point extra contact hours reduce progress rather than adding to it.

What time of day suits a physics session best?+

Earlier than most families assume, because quantitative work degrades with tiredness faster than discussion does. Schools in and around Al Safa finish between roughly 2.30pm and 3.15pm and journeys home are short for many students here, so a 4.30pm start is often workable where it would not be further out. For anything calculation-heavy a weekend morning beats a 7pm weekday slot, and online delivery means no tutor's journey needs accommodating in either case.

What happens if no Higher Level Physics specialist is available?+

We tell you plainly rather than assigning a general science tutor. Higher Level Physics is among the thinner categories, and it tightens further in exam terms when specialists are fully committed. You get a clear statement that we do not currently have the right person, a realistic estimate of how long a match might take, and a suggestion for the interim, which is sometimes the school's own department or, if the real bottleneck is algebra, a maths tutor instead.

Name the level, the maths course, and send a script

Those three things predict most of what a first session will find. The level decides which specialist fits, the maths course predicts whether the bottleneck is algebra rather than physics, and the marked script shows whether the losses are explanation questions answered with descriptions, unit and significant-figure slips, or genuinely absent content. A free trial lesson costs nothing and includes an explicit maths audit. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time in a shared workspace where both people draw, scheduled around the short Al Safa school run and the laboratory timetable rather than around a drive.
