IB Tutor near me in Al Safa

Searching for an IB tutor near me in Al Safa usually returns a map pin and a travel radius. That is the wrong filter. What decides a Diploma grade is whether the person teaching your child knows Paper 2 of their exact subject, the criterion letters on their Internal Assessment, and the command terms that separate a two-mark answer from a five-mark one. IB Gram matches Al Safa households to that specialist and teaches one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial lesson.

IB & IGCSE in Al Safa

What the phrase 'near me' hides on an IB search

A parent in Al Safa 1 types a location into Google because location is the only variable they can see. It is also the variable that matters least to an IB grade. The Diploma is assessed against published descriptors by examiners who never meet the student: a marker in Cardiff reading a Chemistry Paper 2 script has no idea whether the candidate lives on Al Wasl Road or in Hamburg. What the marker can see is whether the answer used the right command term, whether the working was shown at the step the mark scheme awards, and whether the Internal Assessment hit the criteria in the order they are written.

That reframes the search. The useful question is not which tutor sits closest to Safa Park, but which tutor has read the current subject guide for your child's course, knows how the weightings fall between papers at that level, and can name the three places in that syllabus where Al Safa students most often drop marks. Geography answers none of that. Subject knowledge answers all of it.

There is a practical reason the distance filter fails here too. A Diploma student in Al Safa is typically taking six courses, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge and an Extended Essay. A single tutor who can cover Maths Analysis and Approaches HL, Chemistry HL and History SL to examination standard is not a person who exists; a generalist who claims all three will teach the first competently and the other two from a textbook. Narrowing to a twenty-minute drive narrows the pool to whoever happens to live nearby and then forces a compromise on the thing that actually matters.

IB Gram works the other way round. We ignore the radius and match on the course code and level, then deliver the lesson over live video so the geography never enters the decision. Online IB tutoring in Al Safa means a student sitting at the family dining table with the tutor's screen shared, working through a past paper question in real time, with the annotated script saved afterwards. We do not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service IB Gram runs only in India. That is a deliberate limit, not an apology, and the rest of this page explains what the limit buys.

What follows is the subject detail a parent needs before paying anybody. The Diploma's assessment architecture, group by group. The command terms that carry different mark tariffs. The Internal Assessment criteria and the word limits attached to them. Where marks are lost, by subject area. How to use a past paper so it teaches something rather than just producing a score. And the one boundary a tutor must not cross on assessed coursework, because crossing it ends a Diploma rather than improving it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Safa families arrive at the Diploma by three routes: through an IB Middle Years Programme at a school like Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, through IGCSE at a British school and then across to DP1, or from a different system entirely after a move to Dubai. The programme notes below cover what each route leaves to fix.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, drawn one from each of five groups plus a sixth free choice. Each subject is graded 1-7 from external papers plus one internally assessed task. The core adds Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. The total sits at 45 points: 42 from subjects and up to three from the TOK and EE grade matrix. A diploma requires 24 points and clears a list of failing conditions on top.

In Dubai the Diploma is a minority route by headcount. Of the 387,441 pupils in Dubai private schools in 2024-25, International Baccalaureate programmes accounted for seven per cent, against thirty-seven per cent on a UK curriculum. For an Al Safa family that means fewer DP cohorts nearby, smaller subject sets at each school, and a real chance that the Higher Level combination your child wants is taught in a group of four. Thin groups are where one-to-one teaching earns its money.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked 0-8 and converted to a 1-7 grade through published boundaries. There are no public examinations until the optional eProject and on-screen assessments in MYP 5. The programme teaches inquiry and criterion-referenced writing well and leaves a measurable gap in procedural fluency, which is the thing DP1 exposes in the first term.

MYP students in Al Safa typically transfer into DP1 at the same school, so the gap nobody flags is content coverage rather than skill. A student arriving in DP1 Maths from MYP 5 has met trigonometry and quadratics but not binomial expansion, compound angle identities or integration. We treat the first six weeks of DP1 as a repair window and work through those specific topics rather than reviewing MYP material the student already passed.

CPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route combining at least two Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project, a personal and professional skills course, service learning and a language development component. The DP courses inside it are examined on exactly the same papers as the full Diploma, which is the part parents miss.

The Career-related Programme is offered by only a handful of Dubai schools and none in Al Safa itself, so most local enquiries about it come from families considering a move across the city. The tutoring request is almost always for the embedded Diploma courses, which we treat identically to full-Diploma teaching, and for the reflective project, where our role is process coaching against the published criteria and nothing more.

DP CoreAcross DP1 and DP2

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Theory of Knowledge is assessed by a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title and an exhibition of three objects with a 950-word commentary. The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research piece in a subject the student chooses, supervised by a school teacher. Together they contribute up to three points through a published matrix, and a failing grade in either blocks the diploma regardless of subject points.

The core is where Al Safa families most often ask for outside help and where the honesty boundary is tightest. A Theory of Knowledge tutor in Dubai can teach the prescribed title, unpack the knowledge questions and mark a draft against the assessment instrument. Extended Essay supervision in Dubai belongs to the school supervisor by IB rule; what a tutor adds is subject-specific reading guidance and feedback on the student's own argument.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma courses Al Safa households request most, with what each actually assesses and where the marks tend to go. Levels are listed because the paper structure, and therefore the teaching, changes between Standard and Higher Level in every one of them.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

At Higher Level this is three papers plus a 20-mark exploration: Paper 1 without a calculator at thirty per cent, Paper 2 with one at thirty per cent, Paper 3 as two extended problem-solving questions at twenty per cent. Paper 3 is where HL grades are decided, because it rewards structured investigation rather than recall of a method.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and discrete mathematics with calculator use assumed throughout. Standard Level is two papers at forty per cent each plus the exploration. The common failure is treating it as the easier course: the data-handling questions demand precise interpretation of output, and marks go on unjustified conclusions rather than arithmetic.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Under the current subject guide the course is organised around Structure 1-3 and Reactivity 1-3, examined by Paper 1 at thirty-six per cent and Paper 2 at forty-four per cent, with the scientific investigation at twenty per cent. Organic mechanisms and energetics calculations are the two topics Al Safa students most often arrive with half-learned.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 splits into multiple choice and a data-based section; Paper 2 is structured and extended response. Higher Level adds depth in fields, induction and quantum physics rather than extra topics. Marks are lost on unit prefixes, on failing to state which direction is positive, and on describing a graph instead of interpreting its gradient.

Biology

HL and SL

The current guide is built on four themes and two levels of organisation, with unifying concepts running across both. Assessment mirrors the other sciences. The characteristic Diploma error is answering a six-mark question with a list of memorised facts and no causal chain, which the mark scheme does not reward.

Economics

HL and SL

Three papers at Higher Level, two at Standard, plus a portfolio of three commentaries at 800 words each built on published news articles. Diagram accuracy carries real marks: an unlabelled axis or a shift drawn in the wrong direction costs more than a weak paragraph of analysis does.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is guided textual analysis of unseen non-literary texts, Paper 2 a comparative essay on studied works, plus an individual oral and, at Higher Level, a 1,200-1,500 word essay. Students lose marks by summarising content when the task asks for an analysis of authorial choice and its effect.

History

HL and SL

Source-based Paper 1, essay Paper 2 on world history topics, and at Higher Level a regional-depth Paper 3. The Internal Assessment is a 2,200-word historical investigation. Paper 1 question four is the reliable mark-dropper: it needs sources integrated with own knowledge, not a narrative with quotations bolted on.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study examination plus an internally assessed business research project at Higher Level and a written commentary at Standard. Marks go on applying a named tool to the specific firm in the stimulus rather than describing the tool in general terms, which is what most first drafts do.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Paper 1 on core and, at Higher Level, additional topics; Paper 2 on the case study published annually; plus a developed solution as the internal assessment. The solution is where supervision matters most, because the criteria reward documented design decisions as heavily as working code.

Psychology

HL and SL

Biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches, with Higher Level extensions and an experimental study as the internal assessment. Command terms do the damage here: a question asking students to contrast two studies earns nothing for describing them in sequence without a point of comparison.

Arabic and the mandatory UAE subjects

First language and additional language

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies run alongside the Diploma in every Dubai private school under KHDA requirements, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. These are graded on the school's own reporting rather than the IB scale, and families often need support in them on top of Diploma subjects.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Al Safa families use IB Gram, all delivered over live video. Which one fits depends on how far into the Diploma your child is and whether the problem is content, technique or the core.

Weekly one-to-one on a single subject

The standard pattern: one sixty or ninety-minute session a week on one course at one level, running across a term. The tutor works from the school's own scheme of work so the lesson sits ahead of the class rather than repeating it, and sets a short piece of written work between sessions.

  • Same tutor, same slot, so the relationship and the record build
  • Teaching mapped to the school's sequence, not a generic syllabus order
  • Written work marked to the published descriptors before the next session
  • Session notes and annotated scripts kept so progress is auditable

Internal Assessment and core supervision

A shorter, denser block for students working on an exploration, a scientific investigation, a historical investigation or a Theory of Knowledge essay. The tutor reads the student's own draft and marks it against the criteria, returning criterion-level feedback and a list of what the student should change. The student makes every change.

  • Criterion-by-criterion marking against the current assessment instrument
  • Topic feasibility checked before weeks are spent on an unworkable question
  • Word and page limits enforced from the first draft, not the last
  • No tutor will write the IA, draft the Extended Essay or produce the exploration

Examination-term intensive

Two or three sessions a week in the final run-up, built entirely around timed past paper work. Each session is a paper attempted under conditions, then marked live with the student watching the mark scheme being applied. IB past paper practice done this way changes technique; done as homework marked by nobody, it changes almost nothing.

  • Papers attempted to time, then marked against the published scheme in session
  • A running list of the student's own recurring mark-losses, revisited weekly
  • Command-term drilling on the question types that cost the most marks
  • Scheduling that works around school mocks rather than colliding with them

Sibling and multi-subject scheduling

Al Safa households often have two or three children across MYP and DP, or one Diploma student needing two subjects. Each pairing is a separate specialist tutor rather than one person stretched across everything, but the slots are arranged together so the family manages one timetable.

  • A different subject specialist for each course, by design
  • Consecutive slots where possible so the evening is not fragmented
  • One point of contact for scheduling across all of a family's sessions
  • Separate progress records per child, shared only with the parent

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Safa

01

What a search for an IB tutor near me in Al Safa should actually be filtering on

An IB tutor is useful to the exact degree that they know one course at one level. That is the filter. The Diploma publishes a subject guide for every course, revised on a cycle, specifying the syllabus content, the assessment objectives, the paper structure, the durations and the internal assessment criteria. A tutor who has read the current guide for Chemistry HL can tell you in one sentence that Paper 2 carries forty-four per cent and what kind of question sits in it. A tutor who has not will talk about confidence and foundations.

So the three questions worth asking before anybody is paid are these. Which course and level does my child take, exactly as it appears on the school's report? Which subject guide edition is their cohort examined on, and has the tutor taught that edition? And what are the three topics in that syllabus where students most reliably lose marks? A specialist answers all three inside a minute. Anyone who needs to check is not the right match, and finding that out during a free trial lesson costs nothing.

The location filter does something actively harmful here. Restricting to tutors who can reach Al Safa in twenty minutes shrinks the available pool to a geographic accident, then forces the family to accept whichever subject that pool happens to cover. IB Gram does not run that trade. We match on course and level across the whole tutor base and deliver over live video, which is why an Al Safa student can be taught History HL Paper 3 by somebody who specialises in it rather than by the nearest available graduate.

There is a second-order benefit parents notice later. Because the lesson is shared-screen, the past paper the student worked on, the annotations the tutor made and the mark scheme they were held against all survive the session as a file. A whiteboard in a living room does not. Over a two-year Diploma that archive becomes the revision resource the student actually uses in the final term.

The Diploma's assessment architecture, group by group

  • Sciences: Paper 1 at thirty-six per cent, Paper 2 at forty-four, scientific investigation at twenty
  • Mathematics HL: Papers 1 and 2 at thirty per cent each, Paper 3 at twenty, exploration at twenty
  • Mathematics SL: Papers 1 and 2 at forty per cent each, exploration at twenty
  • History HL: three papers plus a 2,200-word historical investigation
  • Economics: three papers at HL plus three commentaries of 800 words each

Every Diploma subject is a split between externally examined papers and one internally assessed task, and the split is not the same across groups. Knowing your child's split tells you where tutoring hours should go. A student two terms from the examinations with an unfinished internal assessment is in a different situation from one whose coursework is banked and whose Paper 1 technique is weak, even if both are sitting on a predicted 4.

The internal component is the part parents systematically underweight. In the sciences it is a single scientific investigation worth twenty per cent of the final grade, marked out of 24 against four criteria of six marks each, with a 3,000-word ceiling. In mathematics it is an exploration worth twenty per cent, marked out of 20 across five criteria. In history it is a 2,200-word investigation; in economics, a portfolio of three commentaries at 800 words each. These are not minor pieces of homework. They are a fifth of the grade, produced under the student's own control, over months, with feedback permitted.

The external papers then divide differently by group. The sciences run two papers under the current guides, with Paper 1 split into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section. Mathematics runs two papers at Standard Level and three at Higher, with the extra Higher paper being extended problem-solving rather than more content. Language A runs a guided analysis paper, a comparative essay paper and an individual oral. Each of those formats needs a different kind of practice, which is why generic revision help produces so little movement.

The practical consequence for an Al Safa family is a planning one. Work out which components are still open, what each is worth, and how long each takes to fix. An internal assessment at criterion level can usually be moved inside a few focused sessions because the criteria are explicit and the student controls the text. Paper technique takes a term, because it is a habit. Content gaps take as long as the content takes. Those three are not interchangeable and should not be bought as a single block of hours.

Command terms: the three-word difference between two marks and five

The IB publishes command terms in every subject guide, grouped by assessment objective, and markers apply them literally. A question that says state wants a single statement with no justification and awards one mark. A question that says explain wants the mechanism or the reason and will not award full marks for a correct statement alone. A question that says evaluate wants weighted judgement with both sides present. Students who read all three as write what you know about this lose marks they have the knowledge to win.

This is the cheapest improvement available in the Diploma and it is almost never taught deliberately. The pattern we see in Al Safa students arriving from a strong MYP background is a habit of discursive writing that scored well under MYP criteria and scores poorly against DP command terms. The student is not weaker. They are answering a different question from the one printed. A term of drilling IB command terms against real past paper questions typically shifts the structured-response marks before any new content is learned.

The drilling has to be done on real questions with the real mark scheme in view, which is why we do it in session rather than setting it as homework. The student attempts the question, the tutor shares the mark scheme, and the student sees that the two marks they missed were available for naming a direction or stating a unit. That moment is worth more than an explanation of the same point, because the student has their own script in front of them.

The terms below are the ones that cost Al Safa students the most, taken from the question types where our tutors see repeated losses. The mark tariffs are indicative rather than fixed: the IB sets marks per question, and the same term can carry different weight in different papers. What is consistent is the kind of answer each term demands.

COMMAND TERMS THAT CARRY DIFFERENT MARK TARIFFS

04

Where Diploma marks actually go missing, by subject area

  • Maths: method marks lost by omitting intermediate steps on multi-step questions
  • Sciences: uncertainty and unit errors in the data-based section of Paper 1
  • Sciences: extended responses written as lists rather than causal chains
  • History: sources quoted alongside own knowledge rather than integrated with it
  • Economics: diagrams unlabelled or shifted in the wrong direction
  • All groups: command term ignored, so the answer type does not match the question

Mark loss in the Diploma is patterned rather than random, and the patterns differ by group. In mathematics the loss is procedural: unsimplified exact forms where the question demanded them, calculator use on the non-calculator paper topics, and method marks forfeited by writing only a final answer. A student who reliably reaches the right number but shows no intermediate step loses marks on every multi-step question in Paper 1, which is thirty per cent of a Higher Level grade.

In the sciences the loss is linguistic and dimensional. Unit prefixes dropped or mis-converted. Graph questions answered by describing the shape rather than extracting and interpreting a gradient or an area. Six-mark extended responses written as a list of true statements with no argument connecting them. The data-based section of Paper 1 punishes imprecision specifically: a tolerance band on a reading, an uncertainty not propagated, a conclusion stated more strongly than the data supports.

In the humanities and languages the loss is structural. History Paper 1 question four requires source material integrated with the student's own knowledge; a narrative with quotations appended reads fluently and scores in the middle band. Language A Paper 1 asks for analysis of authorial choice and its effect; summary of content, however accurate, does not meet the task. Economics punishes diagram errors harshly because the diagram carries explicit marks that prose cannot recover.

What this means operationally is that a diagnosis should come before a teaching plan. Our first full session on a new student is normally a past paper attempted to time and marked in front of them, precisely so the plan addresses their losses rather than the subject's average losses. A student who already shows working does not need working drilled; a student who writes beautifully and never judges needs the evaluate questions, not more content.

05

The Internal Assessment, criterion by criterion, and what a tutor may legitimately do

IB Internal Assessment support in Dubai is sold by a lot of people, and some of what is sold is an academic malpractice risk dressed up as help. The line is drawn clearly in the IB's own academic integrity rules. The work must be the student's own. A supervisor or tutor may discuss the topic, teach the underlying content, comment on a draft and explain what the criteria require. They may not write any part of the text, correct it to completion, or supply a finished piece for the student to submit. A student who submits work that is not their own faces an academic misconduct finding, and the consequence is the loss of the diploma rather than a lower grade.

Inside that line there is a great deal a specialist can do, and most of it is about the criteria rather than the content. The criteria are published, explicit and marked harshly against specific absences. On the sciences investigation, research design carries six marks and fails most commonly because the research question is not focused enough to be answerable with the apparatus described. Data analysis fails on uncertainties not propagated through the calculation. Conclusion fails when it is not compared against accepted values or published literature. Evaluation fails when weaknesses are listed without being linked to their effect on the result.

On the mathematics exploration, the same principle applies with different letters. Presentation rewards a coherent structure a reader can follow without re-reading. Mathematical communication rewards correct notation and defined variables, and is where competent students routinely drop marks for using a symbol they never defined. Personal engagement is not a paragraph about why the student likes the topic; it rewards evidence of independent thinking inside the mathematics. Reflection rewards critical commentary at the points where the work turned, not a summary at the end. Use of mathematics carries the most marks and rewards work at a level commensurate with the course.

Our role on these tasks is therefore specific and bounded. We check the topic is feasible before weeks are spent on it. We teach whatever content the chosen topic requires. We read the student's own draft and return criterion-level feedback saying what each criterion currently earns and what is missing. The student then makes every change themselves, and we mark the next draft the same way. No tutor at IB Gram will write the IA, draft the Extended Essay or produce the exploration on a student's behalf, and we will tell a family plainly when a request has crossed into territory we decline.

SCIENCES SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION: FOUR CRITERIA, SIX MARKS EACH
CriterionMarksWhat earns the top bandMost common reason marks are lost
Research design6A focused question with justified methodology and controlled variablesQuestion too broad to answer with the stated apparatus
Data analysis6Processing shown, uncertainties propagated, graphs correctly constructedUncertainties recorded but never carried through the calculation
Conclusion6Interpretation justified by the data and compared with accepted contextConclusion stated more strongly than the data supports

06

Using past papers so they teach something

  • Attempt to the real duration before marking anything
  • Mark in session with the scheme visible, not alone afterwards
  • Classify every lost mark: content, method, command term or time
  • Track the categories across papers rather than tracking the score
  • Work from school-issued official materials rather than circulated copies

Most Diploma students in Al Safa already have access to past papers through their school, and most are using them in the way that produces the least learning: attempt a paper, check the answers, note the score, move on. The score is the least informative output of the exercise. What matters is which marks were available and not taken, and why, and whether the same reason recurs across papers.

The method we use instead has three steps and takes longer per paper, which is the point. First the paper is attempted to time, with the real duration enforced, because time pressure is itself a skill and a paper done leisurely tests different things. Second the paper is marked with the student watching the mark scheme being applied question by question, so they see where a mark was given for a step they omitted rather than for the answer they got right. Third the losses are classified: content not known, method not shown, command term misread, time ran out. That classification drives the next session.

Over a term the classification becomes the most useful document the student has. A list showing that eleven of their last thirty lost marks were method marks on multi-step questions is actionable in a way that a sequence of percentages is not. It also tells a parent whether tutoring is working, which is otherwise difficult to see: grades move slowly and noisily, but the recurring loss categories shrink visibly.

One caution on materials. We reference and link official syllabus documents, specimen papers and mark schemes on ibo.org and the board sites, and we work from the student's own school-issued copies. We do not reproduce or distribute IB, Cambridge or Pearson papers, mark schemes or subject guides, because those are copyright documents and circulating them is a liability for everybody involved. Your child's subject teacher or IB coordinator is the correct source for them.

07

The core, and the honesty boundary that comes with it

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay carry up to three points between them through a published matrix, and a failing grade in either prevents the award of the diploma whatever the subject points say. That makes the core disproportionately important relative to the attention it gets in a family's tutoring budget. A student sitting on 36 points who loses the core entirely does not get 36 points. They get no diploma.

Theory of Knowledge is teachable and is most often taught badly. The essay responds to one of six prescribed titles set by the IB for each session and is capped at 1,600 words. Students who treat it as a philosophy essay write abstractly and score poorly; the assessment instrument rewards engagement with knowledge questions grounded in specific areas of knowledge, with real examples carrying the argument. The exhibition requires three objects and a 950-word commentary linking each to a selected prompt, and marks are lost most often on objects chosen for their symbolism rather than their usefulness as evidence.

The Extended Essay is supervised by a teacher at the school by IB requirement, and that is not a formality a tutor can take over. The supervisor signs off on the authenticity of the work and conducts the reflection sessions that feed the assessment. What a subject specialist adds, legitimately, is reading guidance in the subject, help narrowing a research question to something answerable in 4,000 words, and feedback on the student's own draft against the published criteria. Extended Essay supervision in Dubai is not something IB Gram provides in place of the school; we work alongside it.

The boundary is worth stating plainly because the UAE market for this is not clean. There are operations selling completed Internal Assessments and Extended Essays to IB students in this city, at prices that suggest the demand is real. Buying one is academic misconduct, it is detectable, and the penalty falls on the student. We teach, we review, we give criterion-level feedback, and we decline the rest. A family that wants the other thing should know we are not the provider for it.

Al Safa's school mix, the regulator, and what an inspection report tells you

  • KHDA inspects annually and publishes reports on a six-band scale
  • Read subject-level attainment, not only the headline band
  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies are required alongside any licensed curriculum
  • Separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students are mandatory in those subjects
  • Fees in Dubai private schools are frozen for 2026-27 under a KHDA announcement of 22 May 2026

Dubai's private schools are regulated by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Its annual inspections rate schools on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak, and the reports are published. For a parent choosing between schools in Al Safa and Jumeirah, the report is the only comparable evidence available, and it is more useful read for its subject-level detail than for its headline band.

The market context is worth having. In 2024-25 Dubai had 387,441 pupils across 227 private schools offering seventeen different curricula, with UK provision at thirty-seven per cent of enrolment, Indian at twenty-six, American at fourteen and International Baccalaureate at seven. Seven new private schools are opening for 2026-27, four of them UK curriculum and three IB, creating 16,846 new places, and enrolment grew by six per cent in 2025-26. KHDA also confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion.

Alongside whatever curriculum a school is licensed to teach, KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in every Dubai private school. Schools must organise separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for both groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, and schools are advised to keep any mandatory-subject lesson to at least 25 minutes. These subjects sit on a Diploma student's timetable in addition to their six IB courses, which is a workload fact families moving to Dubai consistently underestimate.

What an Al Safa parent should take from a KHDA report is narrower than the band. Look at the attainment and progress judgements in the specific subjects your child takes, at the sixth-form or post-16 section if the school runs the Diploma, and at the identified areas for improvement, which are written specifically enough to be actionable. A school rated Very Good overall can have a weak judgement in one science, and that is the judgement that affects your child.

What tutoring costs in this market, and what a permit check costs you

Three of the six ranking pages for this search publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars. So here is the market in the currency Al Safa parents actually transact in, attributed to who publishes it. A budget online tutor, usually a university student, is advertised from AED 45 to 65 by EdFlik and from roughly AED 33 to 52 by Tutopiya. A qualified subject tutor working online sits around AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. An in-home one-to-one visit, travel included, is quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent home tutors. An IB or IGCSE specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. At the top, BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Monthly packages advertised in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Those are market figures with sources attached, not IB Gram's price list. What they show is a structural point: the in-home band sits above the equivalent online band by roughly AED 100 to 200 an hour, and that gap is travel. It buys a tutor in the room. It does not buy a better-matched specialist, and on a Higher Level subject in a thin local pool it frequently buys a worse-matched one. For an Al Safa family the decision is therefore not online versus in-home on price alone; it is whether the premium is better spent on travel or on getting the person who actually teaches Paper 3.

The other thing that costs nothing and is worth doing is checking the tutor is permitted to work. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service is listed as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, with a two working day completion time. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted at you.

One further point specific to UAE families. ADEK's professional ethics rules for Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. This is press-reported rather than quoted from the current policy document, so verify it against ADEK before relying on it. The direction of travel is clear enough: an offer to arrange your child's own classroom teacher privately is an offer to put that teacher in breach.

When Al Safa does not have the specialist, and what we do about it

Availability is the thing nobody in this market discloses, so here it is. For common Diploma courses at Standard Level, a matched tutor is usually available in the same week. For Higher Level sciences and Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL, the pool is narrower and a match can take longer, particularly in the weeks before the May session when the specialists who teach those courses are already full. For the smaller group 3 and group 6 subjects, and for languages beyond the common set, there may be no UAE-based tutor at all in a given term.

What happens then is the part that should be written down before a family pays anything. We say so. If no specialist in that course and level is free, we tell you that rather than offering a generalist and calling it a match, and we will either hold the request until one is or decline it. An IB HL tutor in Dubai who does not teach your child's course is not a partial solution; they are a term of wasted sessions and a student who concludes that tutoring does not work.

Where we can solve it, we often solve it by ignoring geography entirely. Because teaching is over live video and timed to Gulf Standard Time, the tutor pool for an Al Safa student is not the set of people who can drive to Al Wasl Road. A Higher Level History specialist teaching at 5pm Gulf Standard Time can be anywhere that makes 5pm workable, and that widening is the single largest practical advantage of the online format. It is also why IB Gram does not sell home visits in the UAE at all: the radius that in-home delivery imposes is the constraint we are trying to remove.

For an Al Safa family planning ahead, the implication is to request early for anything Higher Level and anything unusual. A family that asks in September for Physics HL support in the spring gets a choice of specialists. A family that asks in March gets whoever is left. That is not a pressure tactic; it is just how a thin specialist pool behaves in a city where the Diploma cohort is seven per cent of the school population.

Nearby areas we cover around Al Safa

Al Safa sits between Sheikh Zayed Road and Jumeirah Beach Road, with Safa Park on its northern edge. The notes below are about Diploma teaching specifically: which programmes the surrounding communities feed into, and what the local school mix means for subject availability.

Al Safa 1

Villa streets running off Al Wasl Road, within walking distance of several British secondaries. Most Diploma enquiries from here are DP1 students who crossed from IGCSE in the same school group and need maths and science bridging.

Al Safa 2

The quieter half, bordering Al Quoz 1 across Sheikh Zayed Road. Families here commonly split children across a British primary and an IB secondary, which produces the awkward MYP-to-DP transition requests we see most.

Al Wasl

Directly inland from Al Safa along Al Wasl Road. Shares the same school catchment entirely, so a tutoring pattern that works for an Al Wasl Diploma student works unchanged for an Al Safa one.

Jumeirah 3

Coastal, immediately north-west, feeding the Jumeirah secondaries. Higher Level science combinations are the recurring request, often because a school runs Physics HL in a single small group.

Umm Suqeim

Further along the coast towards Burj Al Arab, with a mix of British and IB provision. Diploma students here frequently take an Extended Essay in a subject their school does not teach, which is where supervision gaps appear.

Al Manara

Inland of Umm Suqeim and a short run from Al Safa. Smaller villa community with children spread across several school groups, so sibling requests here usually span two curricula at once.

Al Quoz 1

Across Sheikh Zayed Road, closer than the map suggests at off-peak hours and considerably further at 3pm. Several schools on its edges take Al Safa children, including IB provision.

City Walk and Al Safa Park surrounds

Apartment living with a younger demographic, so more MYP than DP. Requests here tilt towards criterion-referenced writing and the MYP personal project rather than examination technique.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Safa

IB and British secondaries in and around Al Safa

Students we support attend these schools. The mix matters for Diploma planning: a British-curriculum school in Al Safa may run A Level rather than DP after IGCSE, so a family wanting the Diploma sometimes moves a child at sixteen, which is its own academic disruption to manage.

  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Jumeirah College, Al Safa
  • Horizon English School, Al Safa
  • Safa British School, Al Safa
  • Latifa School for Girls, Al Safa
  • Jumeirah Primary School, Al Safa

Within a short drive of Al Safa

Where Al Safa Diploma students go when the local subject set does not cover their Higher Level choices. Naming these is useful because a thin HL group at one school is often a full class at another two kilometres away, and that difference changes what tutoring has to do.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Jumeirah
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Dubai College, Al Sufouh
  • Kings' School Dubai, Umm Suqeim

Schools are named as local context only. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any school, school group or regulator mentioned on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the course and the level, not the postcode

The useful information is the exact course name as it appears on your child's school report, the level, the school, and the year of their examination session. Al Safa as a location tells us almost nothing about what the teaching needs to do. The course code tells us everything.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson with the proposed specialist

One lesson, no charge, no card details taken, one per student. Use it as an interview: ask the tutor which paper carries the most marks and what the internal assessment criteria are. A specialist answers immediately. If the match is wrong, say so and we propose a different tutor rather than arguing.

  3. 03

A diagnostic past paper, marked in front of the student

The first full session is usually a paper attempted to time then marked live against the published scheme. This produces a list of the student's own recurring mark-losses, classified by cause. Everything after this is planned against that list rather than against the subject's average weaknesses.

  4. 04

Weekly teaching mapped to the school's sequence

The tutor works from your child's own scheme of work so lessons run slightly ahead of the class rather than repeating it. Written work is set between sessions and marked to the published descriptors, and the annotated scripts are kept so the progress record is something you can actually inspect.

  5. 05

Reassessment each half term, in writing

Every half term we report what has moved: which loss categories have shrunk, which topics are now secure, what the next six weeks target. If nothing has moved, we say that too and change the approach or the tutor. A report that only describes effort is not a report.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on course and level, never on distance

The whole tutor base is available to an Al Safa student because the lesson is over live video. That removes the compromise every in-home arrangement forces, where the family accepts the nearest tutor and hopes the subject fit is adequate. For a Higher Level course in a thin local pool, that compromise is the whole problem.

Teaching against published criteria, not against a feeling

Every piece of work we mark is marked against the IB's own descriptors, with the criterion and the mark named. Parents get feedback that says which criterion currently earns what and what is missing from it. That is checkable in a way that a comment about improving confidence is not.

A stated boundary on assessed coursework

We teach the content, review the student's own draft and give criterion-level feedback. We do not write, complete or produce assessed work, and we say so to families who ask. In a market where completed Internal Assessments are openly sold to IB students, a written boundary is a service rather than a disclaimer.

Sourced figures, including the ones that are inconvenient

Every AED band on this page is attributed to the provider that published it, with October 2026 as the date read. Where a fact is not verified, we say it is not verified rather than publishing it anyway. No IB examination or results date appears on this page for exactly that reason.

Availability disclosed before you pay

If no specialist for your child's course and level is free, we tell you and we wait or decline. Substituting a generalist for a Higher Level specialist produces a term of sessions that change nothing, and the family finds out in March. Saying no in September is the more useful answer.

Scheduling built around a Dubai school week

Sessions are timed in Gulf Standard Time around the school day, mocks and the local calendar, including shifted timings during Ramadan. Because nobody is travelling, a 5pm slot is a 5pm slot rather than a 4:20pm departure from somewhere on Al Wasl Road in school-run traffic.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Safa: your questions answered

Does an IB tutor near me in Al Safa actually need to be near me?+

No, and insisting on it narrows the choice to a geographic accident. The Diploma is examined against published descriptors by markers who never meet your child, so what matters is whether the tutor knows that course at that level. IB Gram teaches Al Safa students one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, which means the tutor pool is the whole base rather than whoever can reach Al Wasl Road by five. We do not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run only in India.

What should I ask a prospective IB tutor before the first paid session?+

Four questions. Which paper carries the most marks in this course, and what percentage is it? How is the internal assessment marked, and what are the criteria called? What is the word or page limit on that task? And which three topics in this syllabus cost students the most marks? A genuine specialist answers all four without checking. Anyone who talks about confidence and foundations instead has not read the current subject guide. The free trial lesson is the right place to ask.

How much of my child's IB grade comes from coursework rather than exams?+

Typically twenty per cent per subject, which parents consistently underweight. In the sciences it is a single scientific investigation marked out of 24 across four criteria, capped at 3,000 words. In mathematics it is an exploration marked out of 20 across five criteria. History uses a 2,200-word investigation; economics, three commentaries of 800 words each. Because the student controls the text and feedback is permitted, these marks are the most coachable in the Diploma, and they are usually the fastest place to gain ground.

Can an Al Safa tutor help with the Internal Assessment without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within a clear line. A tutor may discuss the topic, teach the content it needs, explain what each criterion requires and comment on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not write any part of the text, edit it to completion or supply a finished piece. No tutor at IB Gram will write the IA, draft the Extended Essay or produce the exploration for a student. Submitting work that is not the student's own is academic misconduct and costs the diploma, not a grade.

Why do IB command terms matter so much to the mark?+

Because markers apply them literally and they carry different mark tariffs. State wants one fact with no reasoning. Explain wants a causal chain and will not award full marks for a correct statement. Evaluate wants weighted judgement with a conclusion. Students who read all three as write what you know lose marks they have the knowledge to win. Drilling command terms against real past paper questions usually shifts structured-response marks before any new content is taught, which makes it the cheapest available gain.

My child came through MYP and is struggling in DP1. What is the gap?+

Usually content coverage rather than skill. MYP teaches criterion-referenced writing and inquiry well, and leaves specific procedural gaps that DP1 exposes in the first term. In mathematics a student arriving from MYP 5 has met quadratics and trigonometry but not binomial expansion, compound angle identities or integration. We treat the first six weeks of DP1 as a repair window and work through those named topics rather than revisiting MYP material the student already passed.

How should past papers be used so they actually teach something?+

Attempt the paper to its real duration, then mark it with the student watching the scheme being applied question by question, then classify every lost mark as content, method, command term or time. The score is the least useful output. The classification is the useful one: a student who learns that eleven of their last thirty lost marks were method marks on multi-step questions has something to fix. We do this in session rather than setting it as homework for exactly that reason.

Which Higher Level subjects are hardest to find a tutor for in Dubai?+

Higher Level sciences and Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL have the narrowest pools and book out earliest, particularly in the weeks before the May session. Smaller group 3 and group 6 subjects, and languages outside the common set, may have no UAE-based specialist in a given term. We disclose that before you pay: if nobody suitable is free we hold the request or decline it rather than substituting a generalist and letting you discover the mismatch in March.

What permit should an Al Safa family ask a private tutor to show?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE lists the service as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through its app, website or e-services, with a two working day completion time. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

Is it a problem to hire my child's own schoolteacher privately?+

It can put the teacher in breach. ADEK's professional ethics rules for Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. This is press-reported rather than quoted from the live policy, so verify it with the school or the regulator. Either way, it is not an arrangement worth the risk to a teacher's position.

What do Arabic and Islamic Education mean for a Diploma student's workload?+

They are additional. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in every Dubai private school whatever curriculum it is licensed to teach, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and combined classes prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. For a Diploma student that means those subjects sit on the timetable alongside six IB courses, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, which families relocating to Dubai routinely underestimate.

Can you supervise the Extended Essay instead of the school?+

No, and nobody legitimately can. The IB requires a supervisor at the school, who signs off on authenticity and runs the reflection sessions that feed the assessment. What a subject specialist adds alongside that is reading guidance, help narrowing a research question to something answerable in 4,000 words, and criterion-level feedback on the student's own draft. We work alongside the school supervisor rather than replacing them, and we say so when a family asks us to take the role over.

How quickly can an Al Safa family start, and what does the trial involve?+

For a common Standard Level course, usually within the same week. The first lesson is free, one per student, with no card details taken, and it runs with the specialist we are actually proposing rather than a sales call. Treat it as an interview and ask the subject questions. If the match is wrong, tell us and we propose someone else. If it is right, the next session is normally a diagnostic past paper marked in front of your child.

What should we be able to measure after six weeks of sessions?+

By watching the loss categories rather than the grades. Grades move slowly and noisily over a Diploma, so a percentage after six weeks tells you very little. What moves visibly is the count of marks lost for a given reason: method marks not shown, command terms misread, uncertainties not propagated. We report those each half term in writing, with what the next six weeks target. If nothing has moved we say so and change the plan or the tutor.

Do you provide past papers, mark schemes or subject guides?+

We reference and link the official sources and we work from your child's school-issued copies, but we do not reproduce or distribute IB, Cambridge or Pearson papers, mark schemes or subject guides. Those are copyright documents and circulating them exposes everyone involved, including the student. Your child's subject teacher or IB coordinator is the correct source. For dates and current specifications, ibo.org and the board sites are authoritative and we point you there rather than restating figures that get revised.

Which exam session should we plan around, and can you confirm the dates?+

UAE IB schools sit the May session, with November available as a retake route. We do not publish specific IB examination or results dates on this page, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unverified date is worse than no date when a family acts on it. Confirm the exact window with your child's IB coordinator or on ibo.org. For planning purposes, work backwards from internal coursework deadlines, which usually bite months before the papers do.

Start with the course, not the catchment

If your child takes Chemistry HL at a school in Al Safa, the useful next step is a free trial lesson with a Chemistry HL specialist who can name the paper weightings and the investigation criteria without looking them up. Tell us the course, the level, the school and the examination year. We propose a specialist, run one lesson at no charge with no card details taken, and if the match is wrong we propose someone else. If no specialist for that course is free, we will tell you that instead of selling you a generalist. Everything is taught one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses.
