IB Tutor near me in Mudon

Typing IB tutor near me in Mudon is a question about distance, but the thing that moves a Diploma grade is subject depth: knowing that Physics Paper 3 carries the data-analysis questions, that a Maths exploration is marked on reflection as well as mathematics, that an Economics diagram earns nothing until it is applied. This page is written about the syllabus rather than the postcode. Lessons reach Mudon one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses.

  • Tutors matched by subject and level, not by driving distance
  • Paper weightings and command terms worked explicitly in session

IB & IGCSE in Mudon

Distance is the wrong search term for a Diploma subject

A Diploma grade is decided by a small number of specific things. In Physics, by whether a student states the assumption behind a calculation in an extended response. In Chemistry, by whether curly arrows start from the right place. In Maths Analysis and Approaches, by whether Paper 1 arithmetic survives three lines without a calculator. In Economics, by whether a diagram is applied to the named market rather than described. None of those depend on where the tutor sits.

Mudon makes the point sharply. The community sits off Al Qudra Road in Dubailand with no secondary school inside its boundary, so students travel outward: to Jumeirah English Speaking School in Arabian Ranches, GEMS International School Al Khail, Nord Anglia in Al Barsha South, or Fairgreen International in The Sustainable City. A tutor within twenty minutes of Al Salam or Naseem is drawn from whoever happens to live in Motor City or Dubai Sports City, which is a pool of generalists covering several subjects at two levels.

That is adequate for Standard Level support where the task is pace-keeping. It is not adequate for Higher Level sciences and mathematics, where the marks sit in the detail of how an answer is constructed. A tutor who has taught Chemistry HL across several cohorts knows which three topics eat the most marks in Paper 2 and what the mark scheme accepts for a mechanism; a generalist knows the content. The gap between those two states is the grade.

So this page is organised by syllabus rather than by geography. It sets out the assessment structure of the subjects Dubailand families request most, the weightings per paper at each level, the command terms that cause the most avoidable losses, what the Internal Assessment criteria actually reward letter by letter, and how a past-paper session is run so that it produces a diagnosis rather than a score.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time so a session can sit at 4.15pm for a student home early or after 8pm for a household where both parents commute. Home visits are a service IB Gram runs only in India. Nothing on this page should be read as an offer to arrive at a Mudon door, and the comparison tables further down make the case for the online route on its own terms.

One more reason the postcode is the wrong filter: a Diploma cohort in this belt is small and spread across several schools, so the subject a family needs help with is rarely the subject the nearest available tutor teaches best. Families discover this after a term of polite, unproductive sessions. Starting from the syllabus avoids it, and the sections below are ordered the way a subject teacher would order them rather than the way a directory listing would.

At a glance

  • Every Diploma subject carries an Internal Assessment worth 20 to 30 per cent of the grade
  • Paper weightings differ between Higher and Standard Level, and so does the content ceiling
  • Command-term misreading is the most common avoidable loss across every subject group
  • Mudon's local tutor pool is generalist; Higher Level sciences need a specialist
  • Market rates for a qualified online subject tutor in Dubai run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour (Unitors)
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mudon students meet the IB at different points, and the subject work looks different in each. These are the three programmes families in this belt actually ask about.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. External papers carry most of the grade but every subject has an internally assessed component. Higher Level adds content and, in several subjects, an extra paper rather than simply harder questions.

Diploma students from Mudon generally travel to Arabian Ranches, Al Khail or The Sustainable City. The practical effect on subject work is that the evening is short, so sessions earn more when they run on timed questions than on content lectures that duplicate the school day.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria labelled A to D and marked out of eight, converted to a 1 to 7 grade through published boundaries. The Personal Project runs in the final year. Because there is no external paper until the optional eAssessments, the criteria are the whole of the assessment language.

In this belt the MYP is usually met at Year 7 after a British primary, and the subject work that helps most is translating criterion descriptors into what a piece of work has to show. That is a conversation about wording, and it works well on a shared screen with the student's own marked task in front of both parties.

DP COREAges 16-19 · Across Years 12-13

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

The core components: a 1,600-word Theory of Knowledge exhibition and a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title, plus a 4,000-word Extended Essay in a chosen subject. Together they carry points on top of the subject grades and they are the components students most often leave until they are expensive to fix.

The Extended Essay subject choice is where Mudon students most often go wrong, picking a topic they find interesting rather than one with accessible sources and a research question that can be answered in 4,000 words. That decision is worth one session well before any writing starts.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is subject detail rather than a list: what each component tests, where the marks are usually lost, and what a session therefore practises.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Paper 1 is non-calculator, so an early algebraic slip propagates and follow-through marks only partly rescue it. Paper 2 rewards using the graphing calculator to confirm reasoning rather than to search. HL adds Maclaurin series, three-dimensional vectors and harder differential equations, and Paper 3 is an extended investigation.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and interpretation. The habitual loss is producing correct mathematics and omitting the sentence that interprets it in context, which is where the mark scheme puts the credit. HL adds matrices, graph theory and complex numbers, with Paper 3 as a modelling investigation.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 multiple choice, Paper 2 short and extended response, Paper 3 covering experimental work and the option. Extended responses lose marks when assumptions go unstated. The HL extension in fields and electromagnetic induction is where grade boundaries separate students who know the content.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Stoichiometry, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox and organic. Organic mechanisms are the most requested topic in this belt, and the fix is curly-arrow discipline practised under time rather than re-reading notes. Paper 3 rewards data handling and uncertainty treatment.

Biology

HL and SL

Data-based questions reward careful reading of axes, units and scale before any biology is applied. Students lose marks giving descriptive answers where the command term asked them to explain or to evaluate, and in HL on the biochemical detail Standard Level never reaches.

Economics

HL and SL

Three commentaries form the Internal Assessment, and diagram accuracy carries real marks: an unlabelled axis, a curve shifted without explanation, or a diagram that is described rather than applied to the named market all cost more than a thin evaluation paragraph.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 guided analysis of unseen texts, Paper 2 comparative essay, the Individual Oral on a global issue with two extracts, and at HL the HL Essay. Paper 2 answers that treat the texts in sequence rather than in conversation lose on the comparison criterion.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study and stimulus papers where tools earn marks only when applied to the named organisation. At HL the research project adds a primary-research element that needs a workable question, which is the part students underestimate.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition of three objects against an internal assessment prompt, and a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title. Essays that answer the title in general terms, without areas of knowledge structuring the argument, are capped however fluent the writing.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways a subject-led plan runs, all over live video, chosen by what the student's marked work shows rather than by preference.

Weekly subject session

One hour a week on a single subject at a single level, following the school's topic order and assessment calendar. The default for a student whose grade has drifted a band below where their work suggests it should sit.

  • Same tutor and same subject each week
  • Work set from the student's own syllabus and session papers
  • Notes to the parent naming the topic and the next target
  • Slot moves within the evening when school runs late

Past-paper diagnosis block

Sessions built around timed questions, marked against the published scheme, with the annotated script returned. Used where the content is broadly known and the losses are in construction, timing or command-term reading.

  • Timed section in every session
  • Marks reconciled against the scheme line by line
  • Error pattern named explicitly and tracked week to week
  • Topic repair chosen from the scripts, not from a checklist

Coursework criterion coaching

Work on an Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay, handled as teaching and feedback on the student's own draft against the published criteria. The writing and the decisions stay with the student.

  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own text
  • Research question narrowing and method critique
  • Referencing practice and academic-honesty boundaries
  • No drafting, rewriting or supply of assessed work

The profiles below name subjects and levels rather than areas, because that is the match that matters. A request for Chemistry HL organic mechanisms goes to someone who has taught Chemistry HL, whether they sit in Dubai or elsewhere, and the lesson arrives in Mudon over video either way.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Mudon

01

What a Diploma paper actually asks for

Students who are stuck at a 4 or 5 usually know more content than their grade suggests. What they have not learned is the form of answer each paper rewards. A Physics Paper 2 extended response is not a longer short answer; it is a structured argument in which the physics has to be named, the assumption stated and the arithmetic shown. A Chemistry Paper 2 mechanism question wants arrows from lone pairs or bonds, not a description of what happens.

Weightings matter because they tell you where the available marks are. In most Diploma sciences the Internal Assessment accounts for around a fifth of the grade and the external papers the rest, with Paper 2 carrying the largest single share. In Mathematics the two or three papers split the external marks and the exploration carries the internal portion. A student who treats every component as equally important spends hours in the wrong place.

The practical move is to look up the current subject guide weightings with the school's subject teacher, write them on the front of the folder, and plan the term against them. Exact percentages change between subject guide cycles, so the figures should come from the school or the IB's own published guide rather than from a tutoring page, including this one.

What a session can do is convert those weightings into a working order: the component with the most available marks and the largest current loss goes first.

Maths Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation

This is the choice that causes the most retrospective regret in this belt, and it is made in Year 11 before anyone has seen a Diploma paper. Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic, proof-oriented route with calculus at its centre. Applications and Interpretation is the modelling and statistics route, with technology assumed throughout. Both exist at Higher and Standard Level, and both are respectable; they simply lead different places.

The admissions question is the one worth checking first. Engineering, physics, mathematics and many economics courses at competitive universities expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, and a student who takes Applications may find a shortlist shortens after offers are published. Business, design, psychology and several social-science routes are comfortable with Applications. Requirements vary by university and change, so the check belongs with the school's careers office and the university's own published entry profile rather than with a tutor.

The difficulty question is separate and more often misunderstood. Applications at Higher Level is not an easy option; its Paper 3 modelling investigation and its statistical content defeat plenty of students who assumed otherwise. The honest framing is fit: a student who enjoys proof and manipulation will do better in Analysis, and one who prefers interpreting real data will do better in Applications.

Where a student is already placed and struggling, the tutoring question is not the route but the paper. Analysis students usually need non-calculator fluency. Applications students usually need the interpretation sentence.

Command terms: the cheapest marks a Diploma student throws away

The IB publishes command terms per subject and defines each one precisely. Students read them as synonyms. Describe, explain, evaluate, justify, outline, deduce, suggest and compare demand different answers, and a perfectly good piece of subject knowledge written against the wrong command term earns a fraction of the marks available.

The pattern is visible in any marked script. A question asking a student to explain why a rate of reaction increases receives a description of what happens. A question asking for evaluation receives two advantages and no judgement. A question asking the student to deduce receives a stated conclusion with no reasoning line. None of those are knowledge failures, which is why more content revision does not fix them.

The drill is mechanical and it works. Take ten past-paper questions from the student's own subject, cover the stems, and have the student state only what each command term obliges them to produce before writing anything. Within a few weeks the reading becomes automatic. It is the highest-return fortnight available to a student at a 4 or 5 in almost any subject group.

The table lists the terms that cause the most avoidable loss and what each one actually requires.

Two cautions. The definitions differ slightly between subject guides, so the list a student works from should be the one in their own subject's guide rather than a general version. And command terms interact with marks available: a two-mark explain question wants one causal link, not a paragraph, and writing four costs time that the extended response at the end of the paper needed.

COMMAND TERMS AND WHAT THEY OBLIGE

Internal Assessment criteria, read letter by letter

  • Science investigations: design and evaluation carry marks a strong result alone does not
  • Mathematical exploration: presentation, personal engagement and reflection are separately credited
  • Economics commentaries: article choice is part of the assessment
  • Theory of Knowledge essay: areas of knowledge must structure the argument
  • Extended Essay: the research question decides the ceiling before any writing starts

Every Diploma subject marks its internal component against lettered criteria with published descriptors, and the marks are not distributed the way students assume. In the sciences the investigation is assessed on the design and the analysis and the conclusion and the evaluation, which means a technically modest experiment, well designed and honestly evaluated, outscores an ambitious one written up loosely.

The mathematical exploration is the clearest example. Students pour effort into the mathematics and lose marks on presentation, personal engagement and reflection, which are separately credited. A reflection that says the topic was interesting earns little; one that identifies a limitation in the model and considers what would change if an assumption were relaxed earns properly. The mathematics does not have to be exotic to score well; it has to be correct, communicated and owned.

In Economics the three commentaries are assessed on diagrams, terminology, application, analysis and evaluation against a published article. Students regularly lose marks because the article is too old, too long or does not contain the economics they want to apply. Choosing the article is part of the assessment and deserves a session of its own.

What a tutor does here is explain each descriptor, ask the questions the descriptor implies, and mark the student's own draft against it. The draft stays the student's work, which is both the rule and, in practice, the only way the student learns what the criteria mean.

A last point on timing. Criteria reward process, and process has to exist before it can be written up. A student who runs the experiment, then reads the criteria, has already lost the design marks. Reading the descriptors before the practical, and keeping a dated log while it happens, is worth more than any amount of polishing afterwards, and it is the one piece of advice that costs nothing to follow.

05

How a past-paper session is actually run

  • Timed section first, under conditions, with the clock visible
  • Mark-scheme reconciliation line by line, done by the student
  • The error pattern stated in one sentence by the student
  • The next fortnight planned against that sentence and retested

A session that opens with a past paper and closes with a mark is a wasted hour. The paper is the instrument, not the purpose. The sequence that produces something useful is narrower: a timed section under conditions, immediate reconciliation against the mark scheme line by line, and then a named pattern the student can state back in one sentence.

The reconciliation step is the one most students have never done. Reading a mark scheme properly is a skill: understanding that a mark is awarded for a specific statement, that alternatives in brackets are acceptable, that consequential marks can rescue a wrong early value, and that a correct answer without the required working does not always score. Students who learn to mark their own work stop guessing what examiners want.

Then the pattern. The point of the exercise is a sentence like: I lose marks in extended response because I calculate and never state the assumption. Once a student can say that, the next fortnight has an obvious plan, and the plan is testable at the next timed section. Without that sentence, every session restarts from zero.

Across a block, the scripts accumulate into evidence. That is what the session notes record, and what a review conversation every few weeks is actually about: which pattern closed, which is still open, and which component the remaining marks sit in.

One practical note on logistics. The paper should be the real thing from the student's own subject and board, printed or on screen with a clock running, not a worksheet of selected questions. Selected questions remove the choice of where to spend time, and choosing where to spend time is half of what a Diploma paper tests.

06

Where Mudon students study the Diploma, and what that changes

  • Two students at different schools may study different options within the same subject
  • The school sets the scheme of work, the mock window and the internal deadlines
  • Science Internal Assessments depend on the school's own equipment and practical scheme
  • Name the school in the first message; it changes the plan more than the postcode does

Subject menus differ between Diploma schools, and a tutoring plan should start from the school's actual offer. Jumeirah English Speaking School in Arabian Ranches is the nearest Diploma provision to Mudon and the one most families in this belt name. Further along Al Khail Road, GEMS International School Al Khail and Nord Anglia International School Dubai run IB routes, and Fairgreen International School in The Sustainable City runs the continuum from Primary Years upward.

What that means practically is that two Mudon students described as doing the IB may be sitting different subject combinations with different internal deadlines and different option topics in Physics or Biology. A tutor who asks which school before asking which topic is not being nosy; the school decides the scheme of work, the mock timing and in some subjects the option studied.

It also decides the laboratory. Internal Assessments in the sciences depend on the equipment a school has and the practical scheme it runs, and online tutoring prepares the design, the data treatment and the evaluation around whatever the school can actually provide. Pretending otherwise would be dishonest about what a video lesson can do.

Schools are named here as market context. IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them and claims no endorsement from any of them.

There is a second-order effect worth naming. Because Diploma students in Dubailand are drawn from several schools into a handful of sixth forms, a Mudon student's classmates are often new to them, and the informal revision network that carries a cohort through Year 13 takes time to form. A weekly session with a subject specialist partly compensates for that, which is a reason some families start in the first term rather than waiting for a disappointing report.

07

Honesty rules for subject coursework

  • Model answers belong to practice papers, never to assessed coursework
  • Permitted: content teaching, criterion explanation, method critique, marking the student's own draft
  • Prohibited: drafting, rewriting, editing to completion, supplying data or a worked exploration
  • Official board material is linked, not redistributed

Subject tutoring and coursework tutoring are the same job with a different boundary. On a past paper, a tutor can show a model answer, because the paper is practice. On an Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay, the work is assessed and must be the student's own, authenticated by the teacher. A malpractice finding does not reduce a mark; it can remove the Diploma.

So the permitted actions are specific. Teaching the subject content behind the investigation. Explaining what a criterion rewards and asking the questions it implies. Interrogating a research question until it is answerable within the word limit. Critiquing a method, including saying that it will not produce usable data. Marking a draft the student wrote against the descriptors and saying where it falls short. All of that is teaching.

The prohibited actions are equally specific: drafting any part of the text, rewriting a paragraph, editing to completion, supplying a worked exploration to adapt, or providing data the student did not collect. One provider competing for these searches sells completed Internal Assessments outright. That is the service to refuse, and it is worth telling a teenager explicitly why, because the offer will reach them even if it does not reach you.

Board material carries its own rule. IB, Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables stay with their publishers; sessions reference and link to the official pages rather than circulating copies.

What subject tuition costs in Dubai, with the sources named

  • Specialist band: AED 200 to 450 and above (TutorChase 270; Bestimate 200-450+)
  • Qualified online band: AED 150 to 300 (Unitors IB from 200)
  • In-home visits: AED 180 to 500 with travel inside the quote
  • Monthly specialist exam-year band: AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more (Bestimate)

Look at this from the specialist end rather than the budget end, because that is where a Higher Level subject request lands. Named IB and IGCSE specialists in this market publish AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's table giving AED 200 to 450 or more. Premium examiner-led provision runs AED 500 to 650, with BartyED publishing AED 650. Those are the rates attached to the kind of subject depth this page argues for.

Below that, a qualified subject tutor working online sits at roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Budget online and university-student tutors advertise from around AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik at AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya at AED 33 to 52. In-home visits are quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included, Bestimate's range being AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors advertising AED 200 to 500.

Monthly, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts one weekly hour at AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Packages seen in the market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. For context on household budgets, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27.

These are market rates with their sources named rather than IB Gram prices. What this page does offer is a free trial lesson and a consultation before any payment is taken.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Mudon

Students receiving lessons in Mudon share schools and roads with these neighbouring communities, and the subject requests from each are noticeably different.

Arabian Ranches 3

Diploma requests here skew towards Maths Analysis and Approaches and Physics, reflecting the sixth-form choices at the schools this community feeds.

Remraam

More IGCSE than Diploma, with South View School on its edge. Where Diploma requests do come, they are usually Standard Level sciences and Business Management.

Arabian Ranches 2

Jumeirah English Speaking School runs the Diploma here, so this is the cluster that generates most of the belt's Higher Level science and Extended Essay queries.

DAMAC Hills

Jebel Ali School takes students through IGCSE, so Diploma families in this community have usually moved a child to another school for sixth form.

Motor City

GEMS Metropole and a dense apartment population. Most freelance tutors advertising for Mudon work are based here, and most cover several subjects rather than one at Higher Level.

Dubai Hills Estate

GEMS International School Al Khail and Kings' School Dubai Hills. The nearest IB continuum provision for much of Dubailand and the source of most MYP criterion questions.

The Sustainable City

Fairgreen International School runs the full IB continuum, which makes it the reference point when Mudon families compare a continuum route against a British-then-Diploma one.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say the subject, the level and the school

Chemistry HL at Jumeirah English Speaking School and Chemistry HL at Fairgreen are not the same request, because the scheme of work, the option studied and the internal deadlines differ. Naming the school in the first message saves a session of discovery and sets the calendar the tutor works to.

  2. 02

    Attach one marked script

A marked Paper 2, a returned exploration draft or a mock script tells us whether the losses are content, construction, timing or command-term reading. That diagnosis is the whole value of the first hour, and it is much better made from evidence than from a description.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the subject tutor

The trial runs over live video at no cost and before any payment, with the student rather than the parent doing most of the talking. If the match is wrong, say so and a different tutor is proposed. Nothing is owed for the trial itself whichever way it goes.

  4. 04

Fix a slot that survives the school run

Sessions are scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. A 4.15pm start suits a student home early from Arabian Ranches; after 8pm suits households where both parents commute. Because no travel is involved, a slot can move within the evening or shift after Iftar during Ramadan at no cost.

  5. 05

Review against the components every few weeks

Session notes name the topic, the error pattern and the next target. Every four to six weeks the plan is checked against the school's deadlines and the component the remaining marks sit in, so the hour follows the available marks rather than running through a syllabus in order.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on subject and level, not on distance

A search for a tutor near Mudon returns generalists based around Motor City and Dubai Sports City. A search by subject returns people who have taught Physics HL or Chemistry HL repeatedly. At Higher Level that difference is the one the grade responds to.

Mark schemes are read, not described

Students mark their own work against the published scheme in session, which is how they stop guessing what an examiner wants. Learning to read a mark scheme is a transferable skill that keeps paying after the tutoring stops.

Command terms are drilled explicitly

Describe, explain, evaluate, deduce and justify demand different answers, and a fortnight of mechanical practice converts that from knowledge into reflex. It is the highest-return short intervention available to a student sitting at a 4 or 5.

Coursework support stays inside IB rules

Criterion explanation, method critique and feedback on the student's own draft are teaching. Drafting, rewriting and supplying text are not, and no tutor here will do them. The boundary is stated because the alternative risks the student's Diploma.

Every figure carries a source

AED bands are attributed to the providers and the cost table that published them. Regulatory facts carry their government sources. Nothing on this page is a statistic about our own students, because no such figure could be verified by a reader.

Thin coverage is disclosed

Some combinations, including Further Mathematics at Higher Level and the less-taught languages, have limited availability. Where that is the case you are told, with a timescale or an alternative, rather than being matched with a generalist and left to discover it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Mudon: your questions answered

Does it matter that an IB tutor is not physically near Mudon?+

For the work that moves a Diploma grade, no. Extended-response construction, mechanism drawing, mark-scheme reading, exploration criteria and command-term discipline all happen on a shared screen, and the student keeps the annotated script. What proximity would buy is a physical presence, and from Mudon it would also narrow the choice to tutors living around Motor City and Dubai Sports City, who tend to cover several subjects at two levels. At Higher Level in the sciences and mathematics, choosing by subject rather than by distance is the trade that actually helps.

Which Diploma component should we attack first?+

The one where the largest share of available marks meets the largest current loss. In most sciences that is Paper 2, which carries the biggest single external share and is where extended-response technique lives. In Mathematics it depends on the paper pattern and on whether the exploration is still open. The Internal Assessment is worth attacking early because it is the only component with a deadline you can still influence. Look up the current weightings with the school's subject teacher, write them down, and plan against them rather than against a syllabus order.

My daughter understands Chemistry but scores 4s. What is going on?+

Almost certainly answer construction rather than content. The pattern in marked Higher Level scripts is consistent: the calculation is right and the assumption behind it is never stated; the mechanism is broadly correct and the arrows start in the wrong place; an evaluate question receives two advantages and no judgement. None of that is fixed by more revision. It is fixed by marking her own work against the published scheme until she can state her own error pattern in one sentence, then drilling that pattern on timed questions for a fortnight and retesting.

Should my son take Maths Analysis or Applications at Higher Level?+

Start from where he wants to apply, not from which looks easier. Engineering, physics, mathematics and many competitive economics courses expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level; business, design and several social sciences accept Applications. Requirements vary by university and change, so check the university's own published entry profile with the school's careers office. On difficulty, Applications at Higher Level is not a soft option; its modelling investigation and statistical content defeat students who assumed it was. Fit matters: proof and manipulation suit Analysis, interpreting real data suits Applications.

How long is the Maths exploration meant to be, and what scores well?+

The exploration is a short piece of personal mathematical writing rather than a long report, and schools publish the current page guidance from the subject guide. What scores well is rarely exotic mathematics. It is a focused question, correct and clearly communicated mathematics, genuine personal engagement, and reflection that identifies a limitation in the model and considers what relaxing an assumption would change. Students lose marks on presentation, engagement and reflection while pouring effort into the mathematics itself. Those three criteria are separately credited, which is where a session is best spent.

Can a tutor look at my son's Physics Internal Assessment draft?+

Yes, as teaching and feedback on his own writing. A tutor can explain what each criterion rewards, question whether the method will produce usable data, point out that an uncertainty has been ignored, say that a graph choice hides the relationship, and mark his draft against the published descriptors. What a tutor must not do is draft or rewrite any part of it, edit it to completion, or supply data he did not collect. The work is authenticated by his teacher, and a malpractice finding can cost the Diploma rather than just the marks.

Why do command terms cost a Mudon student so many marks?+

They are the instruction words the IB defines precisely for each subject: describe, explain, evaluate, justify, deduce, outline, suggest, compare and contrast. Students read them as synonyms and answer the wrong question with good knowledge. A question asking for explanation receives a description; one asking for evaluation receives two lists and no judgement. The repair is mechanical: take ten past-paper questions, cover the stems, and have the student state only what each term obliges before writing. Within a fortnight the reading becomes automatic, which is unusually fast for anything in the Diploma.

Is the Extended Essay worth paying for tutoring on?+

One or two sessions at the right moment are worth more than ten later. The decision that sets the ceiling is the research question, and it is made before any writing: a question that can actually be answered in 4,000 words, in a subject where accessible sources exist, with a method the student can carry out. Most weak Extended Essays are not badly written; they are answering an unanswerable question. A tutor can interrogate the question, critique the method and mark drafts against criteria. The essay itself must be entirely the student's work.

How many sessions a week does a Higher Level science need?+

One a week through the term is the usual starting point, moving to two in the eight to twelve weeks before a session if the marked scripts justify it. More than two a week rarely helps during term, because the limiting factor is the student's own practice time between sessions rather than input. The exception is a holiday block, where three or four sessions in a week can close a content gap that term time cannot absorb. The marked work decides this, which is why we ask for a script before proposing a frequency.

Do your tutors know which option topic my child's school teaches?+

Not until you tell us, and it matters. Schools choose option topics and schemes of work, so two Diploma students in Dubai nominally studying the same subject can be sitting different content with different internal deadlines. Naming the school in the first message, alongside the subject and level, means the tutor sets past-paper questions from the right option and works to the right deadlines. It also tells us what laboratory equipment is available, which shapes what can realistically be proposed for a science investigation.

What does a specialist Diploma tutor cost per hour in this market?+

Named IB and IGCSE specialists publish roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai cost table giving AED 200 to 450 or more. Premium examiner-led provision reaches AED 500 to 650, with BartyED publishing AED 650. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. These are market figures with their sources named rather than IB Gram prices, and a free trial lesson comes before any payment either way.

Can online lessons prepare a science investigation without a laboratory?+

They prepare everything around the practical, which is where most of the marks are. The experiment belongs to the school and its equipment; the design, the variable control, the uncertainty treatment, the graph choice, the analysis and the evaluation belong to the write-up, and those are what the criteria reward. A session can rehearse the design before the student goes into the laboratory and interrogate the data afterwards. Any page claiming video lessons replace school practical work would be overselling, which is why this one does not.

My child is in MYP Year 9 and the criterion marks make no sense to us. Can that be explained?+

Yes, and it is one of the most useful single sessions a Middle Years family can buy. Each subject group is assessed against four criteria labelled A to D, marked out of eight, and converted to a 1 to 7 grade through published boundaries. A criterion mark is not a percentage and not a measure of effort; it describes what a piece of work demonstrated against a descriptor. Reading the descriptors next to the student's own marked task usually makes the gap obvious, and it is normally about what the work shows rather than about knowledge.

What if no specialist is free for the subject we need?+

You are told, with a timescale or an alternative, rather than matched with a generalist. Common combinations such as Biology SL, Maths Applications SL and English A are usually covered within a few days. Narrower ones, including Further Mathematics at Higher Level, some of the less-taught languages and certain option topics, can take a week or more, and occasionally the honest answer is that we cannot cover it well. Saying so costs a booking and avoids a wasted term, which is the trade we would rather make.

Start from the subject, not the postcode

The useful message from Mudon names three things: the subject, the level, and the school whose scheme of work the tutor has to follow. Attach one marked script and the first session becomes diagnosis rather than introduction. A free trial lesson over live video is arranged before any payment is taken, and if the match is wrong you say so and a different tutor is proposed. Lessons are delivered online on Gulf Standard Time; home visits are a service IB Gram runs in India only, and no accreditation we do not hold will be claimed anywhere on this site.
