IB Physics Tutor in Karama

An IB physics tutor in Karama is worth hiring for one reason: physics marks are lost in identifiable places, and almost none of them are places a student can find alone. The command verb, the unit, the graph gradient, the uncertainty, the data booklet page nobody opened. IB Gram matches your child to a Diploma physics specialist, teaches one to one live online on Gulf Standard Time, and begins with a free trial lesson that needs no card to book.

IB & IGCSE in Karama

Physics marks go missing in predictable places

Physics is the Diploma subject where the gap between understanding and marks is widest. A student in Karama can explain projectile motion at the kitchen table and still lose half the marks on a projectile question, because the question asked them to deduce rather than to describe, or because the answer needed a unit, or because the gradient they calculated came from two points they read off a graph instead of from the line of best fit. None of that is a physics problem. All of it is examined.

That is why a physics tutor earns their fee differently from a maths tutor. Much of the work is forensic. A specialist reads your child's last script question by question against the published mark scheme and names where each mark went: content not known, command verb misread, working not shown, unit missing, significant figures wrong, graph read badly, uncertainty ignored. Those seven categories cover the large majority of lost marks in Diploma physics, and five of the seven need no new physics taught at all.

The current IB physics syllabus is organised into five themes rather than the older topic list, which matters practically because revision material bought from the wrong era does not map onto what your child is taught. The themes run from space, time and motion, through the particulate nature of matter, wave behaviour, fields, and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level carries additional content within those themes rather than as a separate block. Ask your child's school for its own copy of the current guide and plan from that, not from a second-hand revision book.

Assessment is two papers plus the scientific investigation. Paper 1 splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, Paper 2 is structured and extended response, and the investigation is internally marked against four criteria and carries twenty per cent of the final grade. The investigation is the component a student controls most and neglects most, and it is where the boundary between coaching and malpractice has to be explicit before any work starts.

The hidden prerequisite is mathematics. Rearranging an equation where the subject appears inside a square root, handling standard form, working in radians when a wave question needs them, reading a logarithmic scale, propagating an uncertainty: these are mathematics skills marked inside a physics paper. A student taking Physics HL alongside Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation often finds this harder than one taking Analysis and Approaches, and it is a fixable gap rather than a verdict.

What follows is the content of that work: the five themes and what each demands, the paper structures, the seven places marks disappear, the data booklet, the investigation criteria by name, and what the Dubai market charges. Lessons are delivered one to one, live online. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics students in the Karama and Oud Metha belt arrive from several different routes, because the schools here run British, Indian and Pakistani curricula alongside the IB. These are the stages a physics tutor works across.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme Physics

Five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level adds depth inside each theme rather than a separate option block. Assessment is Paper 1, with a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, Paper 2 as structured and extended response, and the internally assessed scientific investigation.

Not every school in this belt offers Physics at Higher Level in a workable option block, and some run it only when numbers allow. Where a student needs Physics HL for an engineering or medical application, check the option block before DP1 begins rather than hoping it resolves. Families here regularly discover the clash in the second week of term.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme Sciences

Four criteria marked out of eight each: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The processing and evaluating criterion is the direct ancestor of the Diploma investigation, and students who were taught to handle uncertainty and anomalous data properly at MYP 5 start the DP investigation a long way ahead.

An MYP sciences report does not separate physics from the other disciplines, which can hide a specific weakness. Ask the subject teacher for the physics-only marks from the last two units before assuming a student is ready for Physics HL, because a strong overall science grade can rest entirely on biology.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Physics, as the route in

Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1 in most British-curriculum schools near Karama. The assumed baseline for Diploma physics is the Extended or Higher tier content: forces and motion, electricity, waves, thermal physics, magnetism and basic nuclear physics, together with the practical skills examined through the board's practical or alternative-to-practical route.

The step from IGCSE to Diploma physics is mathematical before it is conceptual. Students who were comfortable with the physics but relied on a formula triangle to rearrange equations hit a wall in DP1, because Diploma questions expect algebraic rearrangement as a matter of course and will not reward a memorised shortcut.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Physics alongside the Diploma core

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and creativity, activity, service run alongside the six subjects. A physics Extended Essay is demanding because a vague research question cannot be rescued by good writing, and because experimental work done at home rarely produces data of a quality the criteria reward. Supervision stays with the school.

Students in this belt often choose a physics Extended Essay because they enjoy the subject, then discover in DP2 that the equipment they needed was never available. Settling the research question and the data source in the first term of DP1 is the single most useful intervention available.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics is this page, but it is rarely taken alone. These are the subjects our Diploma specialists cover alongside it, with the part of each that actually decides the grade.

Physics

HL and SL

The five themes, the data booklet, uncertainty handling and graph work. The recoverable marks sit in command-verb precision, units, significant figures and showing the substitution before the answer rather than after it.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The usual companion to Physics HL. Algebraic rearrangement, calculus and trigonometric identities feed directly into mechanics, waves and fields, so a weakness here costs marks in two subjects at once.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Workable alongside Physics but with a gap to manage: the algebraic manipulation Diploma physics assumes is less drilled in this route. Students taking both usually need a short block of rearrangement and standard-form practice early in DP1.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Shares the quantitative discipline physics rewards: units, significant figures, state symbols and a stated method. Energetics and kinetics questions fail for the same reasons physics calculation questions fail.

Biology

HL and SL

Content-heavy and command-verb sensitive. The data-based questions are marked much like the physics data section, so a student drilled on graph reading and error bars in physics picks up marks here too.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Pseudocode, data structures and algorithmic reasoning. Students who like the modelling side of physics often prefer this to a third science, and the internal assessment rewards project discipline over programming flair.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Materials, structures and the design cycle, with a substantial internally assessed project. The overlap with physics is in mechanics and materials, and the project needs the same early decision about what data is realistically obtainable.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy earns the marks a paragraph cannot. The quantitative HL questions reward the same arithmetic care that physics calculation questions do, including units and sensible rounding.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen analysis under time pressure and an individual oral with a line of argument stated early. For a physics-heavy student this is usually the subject where structure, not content, decides the grade.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and the prescribed-title essay. Physics students often find the demand inverted: TOK rewards holding competing claims open rather than resolving to one answer, and coaching is about structuring the argument.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of physics support, chosen by what the diagnosis shows rather than by preference. Every session runs one to one, live online.

Weekly through-course physics

One session a week across DP1 and DP2, moving with the school's own sequence through the five themes. Each session pairs a teaching block with past-paper questions on the theme just taught, marked before the next session against the published scheme. The written note after each session names which of the seven mark-loss categories is currently costing the most.

  • Theme order follows the school, not a generic plan
  • Past-paper questions marked between every session
  • Data booklet used from the first session onwards
  • Uncertainty and graph work drilled continuously, not as a unit

Investigation coaching block

Three to five sessions around the scientific investigation, timed to the school's internal deadlines. The tutor interrogates the research question, checks whether the proposed method can produce data the criteria will reward, and gives criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft. Nothing is written or rewritten for the student and the school's supervisor remains the supervisor.

  • Research question settled before any data is collected
  • Method tested against what the criteria actually reward
  • Feedback mapped to the four named criteria
  • Academic-honesty boundary put in writing to the parent first

Pre-session technique intensive

A compressed block before the May examinations, built from the paper structure backwards. Multiple-choice technique and the data-based section first, because they are the least practised and the most mechanical; then structured and extended response, where command verbs and shown working decide the marks. No new theme content in the final fortnight.

  • Diagnostic paper marked before the block is planned
  • Command-verb drills on real past-paper stems
  • Data section practised with graphs and error bars every session
  • Timed conditions from the second session onwards

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Karama

01

The five themes, and what each one actually demands

The current IB physics syllabus is built around five themes, and a tutor planning work for a Karama student needs to know which theme the school is in and which themes are still ahead. The themes are space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level content sits inside the themes rather than in a separate block, which is a change from older syllabuses and the reason second-hand revision guides mislead.

Each theme fails in its own way. Space, time and motion is where graph interpretation is established, and students who never learn to read a gradient as a physical quantity carry that weakness through every later theme. The particulate nature of matter is arithmetic-heavy: specific heat capacity, latent heat and gas law calculations, where the marks go to unit conversion and to the substitution being written before the answer. Wave behaviour punishes students who cannot work confidently in radians or handle a phase relationship, and the superposition questions reward a sketch before any algebra.

Fields is the theme most students name as the hardest, partly because gravitational and electric fields are taught in parallel and the analogies invite confusion, and partly because the questions ask for deductions about direction and sign that a memorised formula cannot supply. Nuclear and quantum physics has less mathematics but more precise language, and it is where command-verb errors are most expensive: a question asking a student to explain a decay process will not award marks for a description of it.

The practical consequence is that revision cannot be uniform. A student weak in fields and strong in waves should not be revising in syllabus order, and a student whose graph reading is unreliable needs that fixed before any theme is revisited, because it affects all five. Our tutors audit the themes against marked work, then set the order by marks available. Confirm the current theme structure and content against your child's school's own copy of the subject guide, since the IB revises guides on a cycle.

Paper 1, Paper 2 and the investigation: what each component rewards

  • Paper 1 contains a multiple-choice section and a data-based section
  • Paper 2 is structured and extended response, driven by command verbs
  • The investigation is 20% of the grade and marked on four criteria
  • Gradients must come from the best-fit line, not from data points
  • Verify current weightings on the school's own subject guide

Diploma physics is assessed by two papers and one internally marked investigation. Paper 1 has two sections: a multiple-choice section and a data-based section. Paper 2 is structured and extended response. The investigation carries twenty per cent of the final grade and is marked by the school against four criteria, then moderated. Confirm the current weightings against your school's own copy of the subject guide, because the IB revises them on its publication cycle and an out-of-date figure misdirects revision.

The multiple-choice section is the most mechanical and the most neglected. It rewards elimination, order-of-magnitude checks and a willingness to leave a question and return. Students lose marks here to time rather than to physics: four minutes spent fully solving a question that could have been settled by ruling out two impossible options is four minutes taken from the end of the paper. This is coachable in two sessions and it is almost never taught.

The data-based section is the part that distinguishes prepared candidates. It asks a student to read a table or a graph, process the numbers, consider uncertainty, and comment on whether the data supports a claim. Marks are available for plotting correctly, for drawing a best-fit line that actually fits, for calculating a gradient from widely separated points on that line rather than from data points, for stating units, and for discussing whether an anomaly matters. Each of these is a specific taught skill.

Paper 2 is where command verbs decide everything. State, describe, explain, outline, deduce, determine, show that, compare and discuss each define the shape of a creditable answer, and a student who writes a good paragraph in the wrong shape loses marks they understood the physics for. The remedy is unglamorous: take twenty real past-paper stems, identify the verb, write the required shape of answer without doing the physics, then check against the scheme. Two sessions of that is worth more than a theme revisited.

Seven places physics marks disappear, in order of how much they cost

A diagnostic that names categories is more useful than one that names topics, because five of the seven categories below are fixed without teaching any new physics. Our tutors mark a student's own script and allocate every lost mark to one of these seven, then plan from the proportions. In this belt the pattern is consistent enough to predict before the script arrives.

First, command verbs. A student who describes where the question said explain, or who gives one reason where the mark scheme wanted a comparison, loses marks on content they knew. Second, unshown working. Diploma physics mark schemes award method marks for a correct substitution even where the arithmetic then fails, and a bare answer forfeits them. Third, units. A numerical answer with no unit, or with a unit that does not match the quantity, loses the mark however correct the number. Fourth, significant figures and premature rounding, which accumulate quietly across a paper.

Fifth, graph handling. Reading a gradient from two adjacent data points, drawing a line that passes through the first and last point rather than fitting the data, failing to label axes with quantity and unit, ignoring error bars entirely. Sixth, the data booklet: students who do not know what is in it waste minutes searching or, worse, try to recall a constant they could have read. Seventh, uncertainty, which is the category most often skipped by schools under time pressure and therefore the one most reliably available as a source of recovered marks.

The sequence matters. Fix command verbs and shown working first, because they are quick and affect every question on both papers. Then units and significant figures, which are habits rather than knowledge. Then graphs and uncertainty, which take longer and need repeated practice on real data sets. Content gaps come last in the ordering not because they do not matter, but because a student who fixes the first six categories typically recovers more marks in four weeks than a student who revisits a theme does in eight.

The data booklet and uncertainty: two short skills worth a grade band

  • Know which equations are supplied and which must be recalled
  • Quote the selected relationship before substituting into it
  • Absolute and percentage uncertainty, then propagation through powers
  • Error bars, best-fit line, and maximum and minimum gradient lines
  • Practise on real past-paper data sets, not invented ones

The data booklet is supplied in the examination and most students treat it as a formula sheet they will glance at if stuck. Treated properly it is a working tool, and knowing it well is worth minutes on every paper. A student should be able to find a constant without hunting, know which equations are given and therefore need not be memorised, and know which relationships are not given and therefore must be. That last distinction is the useful one: the memorisation burden in Diploma physics is smaller than students assume, and misplacing effort on recall of supplied equations is a waste.

Using it well also changes how a question is read. If the equation is on the page, the examiner is not testing recall; they are testing whether the student can select the right relationship and substitute correctly, which means the marks are in the selection and the substitution. Teaching a student to find and quote the relationship explicitly before substituting earns method marks and slows them down at exactly the point where speed causes errors.

Uncertainty is the second short skill, and it is the one most often compressed out of a crowded school year. The examinable content is bounded: absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagating uncertainty through sums, products and powers, representing uncertainty with error bars, and drawing maximum and minimum gradient lines to estimate the uncertainty in a gradient. That is a small body of technique with a predictable question style, and it appears reliably in the data-based section.

Because it is bounded and predictable, uncertainty is the best-value tutoring topic in Diploma physics. A student who cannot touch these questions at the start of a block can usually answer them competently after three or four focused sessions with real past-paper data. The same cannot be said of fields. Our tutors therefore front-load uncertainty and graph work in a short run-in, and only then move to whichever theme the diagnosis flagged.

05

The scientific investigation: four criteria, twenty-four marks, and a firm boundary

The internally assessed scientific investigation is a single piece of independent experimental work, written up within a word limit set by the current guide and marked by the school against four criteria before IB moderation. It carries twenty per cent of the final physics grade. For a student who finds examinations difficult, it is the most controllable fifth of the grade available; for a student who leaves it late, it is the fifth most easily thrown away.

The four criteria are research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each carrying six marks. Research design is where most investigations are lost before any data is collected: a question that is too broad, variables that cannot be controlled in a school laboratory, or a method that will not generate enough data points to support a gradient. A tutor can add enormous value in one or two sessions here simply by asking whether the proposed question can be answered with the equipment that actually exists.

Data analysis rewards correct processing, honest treatment of uncertainty and graphs that are genuinely informative. Conclusion rewards an answer to the stated question that is supported by the data and placed in the context of accepted physics, not a restatement of the result. Evaluation rewards specific, physics-based criticism of the method and realistic improvements, and it is where generic sentences about human error cost marks that specific observations about systematic effects would have earned.

The boundary is not negotiable and should be stated in writing before any session. An IB Gram tutor will interrogate the research question, teach the physics involved, check whether the method can produce usable data, explain what a criterion requires and mark a draft against it. An IB Gram tutor will not supply the research question, write any part of the report, rewrite the student's prose or produce the analysis the student then submits. The supervisor at the school remains the supervisor and the authenticity declaration remains the student's.

06

The mathematics inside physics, and why it ambushes students in DP1

Diploma physics assumes a level of algebraic fluency that IGCSE physics does not. At IGCSE a student can often survive with a formula triangle and a calculator. In DP1 the questions expect rearrangement as a routine step, including rearranging for a variable inside a square root or a reciprocal, and they expect it done quickly because the physics is the point of the question rather than the algebra.

The specific skills are nameable. Rearranging an equation where the subject appears in a denominator or under a root. Handling standard form and prefixes, including converting between them under time pressure. Working in radians rather than degrees as the default for wave and circular-motion work. Reading and interpreting a logarithmic scale. Manipulating proportionality statements to predict the effect of doubling one quantity. Propagating percentage uncertainty through a product or a power. None of these is advanced mathematics; all of them are examined inside physics papers.

Which mathematics course a student takes alongside physics changes the size of this gap. A student on Analysis and Approaches is drilled in exactly this kind of manipulation, often to a higher level than physics requires. A student on Applications and Interpretation is drilled in data, modelling and calculator work, and may be a strong mathematician who has simply not practised symbolic rearrangement to the same depth. That combination is entirely viable, but it needs recognising in DP1 rather than in DP2.

The fix is a short, front-loaded block rather than a running theme. Four or five sessions of rearrangement, standard form, radians and proportional reasoning, drilled on physics equations rather than abstract ones, removes most of the friction. It is also the clearest example of why a physics tutor should read a script before teaching anything: a student whose physics looks weak may simply be losing marks to algebra, and the two problems have completely different remedies.

What Diploma physics tutoring costs in this market, and what the travel premium buys

Take the in-home premium first, because it is the figure Karama families question most. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table puts in-home one-to-one tutoring at AED 180 to AED 350 an hour, and independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to AED 500. A qualified subject tutor working online is quoted at AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. The difference between those bands is, in substance, the tutor's travel. In Karama, where the schools and the tutors are both minutes away, that premium buys a short drive rather than better physics teaching.

Below both bands sits budget online tutoring, advertised from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour: EdFlik publishes AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya quotes from AED 33 to AED 52. At that level a tutor can supervise practice and re-explain something already taught. What it does not reliably buy for Diploma physics is someone who can mark a data-based question against the published scheme or tell you whether a proposed investigation question is answerable. Above the mid-band, IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase listing AED 270 and Bestimate AED 200 to AED 450 and upwards; premium named tutors reach AED 650 at BartyED.

Monthly, the same market looks like this: Bestimate estimates a weekly one-hour session at AED 240 to AED 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-band, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist examination-year work. Packages advertised in Dubai include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. All of these are other providers' published figures, not IB Gram's prices.

What a parent can test independently is worth more than any band. Ask a prospective physics tutor to mark one data-based question from your child's last paper and explain where each mark went. Ask which themes they have taught at Higher Level and when. Ask them to name the four investigation criteria without looking them up. A tutor who can do those three things is worth more at the middle of the band than one who cannot at the bottom of it. For IB Gram's own arrangements, start with the free trial lesson and the consultation.

Why a physics specialist is harder to find locally than a maths one

Hiring someone who can physically attend a flat in Karama means hiring from the set of tutors who live within a short drive and are free at the hour your child is free. For IGCSE mathematics that set is large. For Diploma physics at Higher Level, with current-guide theme knowledge and the ability to mark a data-based question properly, it is small, and the overlap between small and free-at-5pm-on-a-Tuesday is smaller still.

This is the structural reason online delivery wins for this subject rather than a marketing preference. Removing geography from the match changes the constraint from postcode to diary, and for a scarce specialism that is the difference between the right tutor and a near-enough one. A near-enough physics tutor is specifically expensive: they will teach the content competently and miss the mark-scheme detail that was costing your child the marks, so the sessions feel productive and the grade does not move.

The practical side favours online too. Physics tutoring needs a shared surface where graphs can be drawn, annotated and kept, a way to send a script for marking and get it back annotated, and the data booklet open on screen alongside the question. A tablet and a shared whiteboard do all of that better than two people and one exercise book. Sessions can also run at 3:45pm, because the schools in the Oud Metha belt finish early, which matters for a subject that needs an alert student.

The honest exception is a much younger or very distractible student, where a person in the room helps in a way video does not. For a DP1 or DP2 physics student it almost never decides anything. IB Gram does not offer in-home visits anywhere in the UAE — home tutoring is a service we provide only in India — so where a family's child genuinely needs someone physically present, we will say so rather than sell an online session as a substitute.

Permits, claims and the lines we will not cross

Private tutoring in the UAE is lawful and regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students. Applications go through MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, via the smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals tutoring without a permit face fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule has been published, any specific amount quoted to you is unverified.

A permit is a legal status rather than a teaching qualification, and it is nobody's endorsement. IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB or Cambridge. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific authorisation issued to training institutes operating premises in Dubai; we do not operate premises in the UAE and make no such claim. Nor are our tutors IB examiners unless an individual's current status can be evidenced, and examiner status in any case gives nobody access to marking decisions, grade boundaries or unseen papers.

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which on the UAE government's own description is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA also requires Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies in all private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes organised for Arab and non-Arab students and instructional time calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit. That matters to a physics tutoring plan mainly as timetable arithmetic: the free hours in your child's week are fewer than the curriculum brochure suggests.

On materials and outcomes the limits are firm. We will not supply IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads, because they belong to the board; a tutor references them, teaches from them in the session and points you at the official source. We will not predict a grade, and nobody should. A specialist can tell you which of the seven mark-loss categories is costing your child marks today and what looks reachable from there, which is a useful statement and a different one from a promise.

Where we tutor

Where our Karama physics students live

Karama is a dense apartment grid in old Dubai, bordered by Oud Metha, Zabeel, Bur Dubai and Al Mankhool. Physics requests from this belt cluster around a few specific streets and a few specific schools, and the practical detail differs across them.

Al Karama

Apartments and short walks, with schools minutes away. For physics the local constraint is a desk with room for a graph, a calculator and a data booklet, which a shared dining table often is not at 7pm.

Oud Metha

The school cluster itself. Early finishes make an afternoon session practical, which suits physics because graph and uncertainty work needs a student who is not already tired.

Al Mankhool

Mixed British and Indian-board families. Physics requests here skew towards the IGCSE to Diploma transition, where rearrangement and standard form are the recurring gap.

Bur Dubai

Older blocks and larger households. Siblings often study different sciences at once, and staggered sessions work better than a shared slot where equipment and quiet are both limited.

Al Jafiliya

Metro access broadens school choice, so we see a wider spread of Diploma option blocks here, including students taking Physics HL with Applications and Interpretation.

Al Garhoud

Low-rise near the airport and Deira International School. More full-continuum IB students, so MYP sciences work features more than in Karama proper.

Al Satwa

Dense and low-rise with a short hop to Jumeirah-side schools. Requests lean towards IGCSE physics rather than Diploma, and towards the practical paper.

Za'abeel

Fewer families and a wider school spread. Session timing here follows parental work hours more than the school bell, so evening slots carry more of the week.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Karama

Schools within the Karama and Oud Metha radius

Most schools a Karama address sits near run British, Indian or Pakistani curricula, so Diploma physics students from this belt usually arrive from IGCSE rather than from MYP. That shapes the first six weeks of tutoring more than anything else.

  • The Indian High School, Oud Metha
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Dubai English Speaking School
  • Pakistan Education Academy
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Jumeira

The nearest schools running the full IB continuum

For families specifically wanting PYP through DP physics in one institution, the options sit a short drive outside the Karama grid. These are the schools where an MYP sciences report and a DP option block come from the same place.

  • Deira International School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Hartland International School
  • Dubai International Academy, Al Barsha
  • Uptown International School

Schools are named only as context for the local education market. IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school named, and the students we support attend a wide range of schools across Dubai.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level and the theme

Physics HL or SL, which of the five themes the school has taught, and which are still ahead. If you also tell us which mathematics course your child takes, we can predict the algebra gap before the first session rather than discovering it in week three.

  2. 02

    Send one marked script

A recent paper with the marks on it, ideally including a data-based question. Our specialist allocates every lost mark to one of the seven categories and arrives at the trial lesson with the proportions, which is what the plan gets built from.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, no card needed

A full session with the matched physics specialist at a time that fits the early finish in this belt, at no charge and with no payment details taken beforehand. A written note follows, naming the categories costing the most marks and what the first six weeks would target.

  4. 04

    Settle the weekly shape

Session frequency, the slot in Gulf Standard Time, what is set between sessions and when it comes back marked. If an investigation block is needed, we fix its dates against the school's internal deadlines before anything else is scheduled.

  5. 05

Review on marks, adjust or stop

At six weeks we compare raw marks on comparable questions, with the category breakdown alongside. If the marks are not moving, we change the plan or the tutor. If no HL specialist is free at your hour, we tell you rather than substitute someone who nearly fits.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marked against the published scheme, not by feel

Every piece of work comes back with the marks allocated to one of seven categories: command verb, shown working, units, significant figures, graphs, data booklet, content. The breakdown is what changes the plan.

Uncertainty and graph work treated as content

Bounded, predictable and reliably examined in the data-based section. These are the highest-value sessions available in Diploma physics, and in a crowded school year they are the first thing compressed out.

The algebra gap diagnosed early

Rearrangement, standard form, radians and proportional reasoning are examined inside physics papers. We check for that gap in the first session, because a student losing marks to algebra does not need more physics.

Investigation coaching with the boundary written down

We interrogate the research question, test whether the method can produce usable data and give criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft. We do not write it, rewrite it or supply the analysis.

Current-guide specialists only

The five-theme structure replaced an older topic list, and revision material from the previous era misleads. We match tutors who teach the current guide and who know which equations the data booklet supplies.

Online, stated plainly up front

Live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared whiteboard for graph work. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE homes; home visits are offered only in India, and we say so here rather than at booking.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Karama: your questions answered

What are the five themes in the current IB physics syllabus?+

Space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level content sits inside those themes rather than in a separate options block, which is a change from older syllabuses. The practical consequence is that second-hand revision guides written for the previous topic list do not map cleanly onto what your child is taught. Ask the school for its own copy of the current subject guide and plan revision against that, confirming the structure and assessment weightings there rather than relying on any figure quoted online.

Which physics theme do Diploma students find hardest?+

Fields, in most cohorts. Gravitational and electric fields are taught in parallel and the analogies between them invite confusion, and the questions ask for deductions about direction and sign that a memorised formula cannot supply. Wave behaviour comes second, usually because students are working in degrees when the physics expects radians, or attempting algebra before drawing a diagram. Neither difficulty is about intelligence; both respond to being taught to reason in words before reaching for an equation, which is a habit rather than a body of knowledge.

How does the data-based section of Paper 1 differ from the rest?+

It asks a student to work with real data rather than recall physics. Marks are available for plotting accurately, drawing a line that genuinely fits the points, calculating a gradient from two widely separated points on that line rather than from raw data points, stating units, handling absolute and percentage uncertainty, and judging whether an anomaly matters. Each of those is a specific taught skill with a predictable question style, which makes this section unusually responsive to tutoring compared with content-heavy parts of the course.

Why does my child's physics answer get part marks when the answer is right?+

Almost always because the method was not written down. Diploma physics mark schemes award marks for a correct relationship quoted and a correct substitution made, independently of whether the final arithmetic succeeds. A bare answer forfeits those marks even when it is correct. The habit to build is mechanical: quote the relationship from the data booklet, write the substitution line with units, then give the answer to a sensible number of significant figures. It takes one session to explain and several weeks of marked practice to become automatic.

How much does the scientific investigation count, and what is it marked on?+

It carries twenty per cent of the final physics grade and is marked by the school against four criteria before IB moderation: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each worth six marks. Most investigations are lost in research design, before any data is collected, because the question is too broad or the variables cannot be controlled with the equipment available. Confirm the current word limit and criterion weightings against your school's own copy of the subject guide, since the IB revises guides on a publication cycle.

Can a tutor help with the physics investigation without breaching IB honesty rules?+

Within clear limits, yes. A tutor can interrogate the research question, teach the physics involved, check whether the proposed method will generate data the criteria reward, explain what a criterion requires and mark the student's own draft against it. A tutor cannot supply the research question, write any section, rewrite the student's prose or produce the analysis. The school's supervisor remains the supervisor and the authenticity declaration remains the student's. Any service offering to produce an investigation is offering malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student.

Is Physics HL much harder than Physics SL, or just longer?+

Both, and the difference is more than volume. Higher Level adds depth inside each theme, so the questions demand reasoning chains rather than single-step application, particularly in fields and in nuclear and quantum physics. The mathematical demand rises alongside: more rearrangement, more proportional reasoning, more work with logarithmic relationships. A student coping comfortably at Standard Level will not automatically cope at Higher, and the usual limiting factor is algebraic fluency rather than physics interest. Audit the Higher Level content specifically before revising anything.

My child takes Applications and Interpretation maths with Physics HL. Is that a problem?+

It is workable, with one gap to manage deliberately. Applications and Interpretation drills data, modelling and calculator work; Diploma physics assumes routine symbolic rearrangement, including rearranging for a variable under a root or in a denominator, plus confident standard form and radians. A strong Applications student may simply not have practised those to the depth physics expects. Four or five front-loaded sessions on rearrangement and proportional reasoning, drilled on real physics equations rather than abstract ones, removes most of the friction in DP1.

How well should a student know the physics data booklet?+

Well enough to find a constant without hunting and to know which equations are supplied and which must be recalled. That second distinction is the useful one, because it shrinks the memorisation burden considerably and students routinely waste effort learning relationships that are printed in the examination. Using it properly also changes how a question is read: if the equation is given, the marks sit in selecting the right relationship and substituting correctly, so quoting the relationship explicitly before substituting earns marks and slows a student down where speed causes errors.

What does Diploma physics tutoring cost around Karama?+

Published Dubai market rates split by tier rather than by neighbourhood. Budget online tutoring is advertised from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, qualified subject tutors online at AED 150 to AED 300, IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, and premium named tutors as high as AED 650. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to AED 500 because travel is inside the rate. Those figures come from EdFlik, Tutopiya, Unitors, TutorChase, Bestimate and BartyED. For IB Gram's own arrangements, begin with the free trial lesson and the consultation.

Why is a Higher Level physics tutor harder to find nearby than a maths tutor?+

Because the pool is genuinely smaller. Plenty of tutors can teach IGCSE mathematics; far fewer can teach current-guide Higher Level fields, mark a data-based question against the published scheme and advise on an investigation's research design. Hiring someone who can attend a Karama flat restricts that already small group to those living nearby and free at your hour. Online removes the geography from the match, which matters most precisely for a scarce specialism, and a near-enough physics tutor is expensive: the sessions feel productive while the grade stays still.

Can one session a week genuinely move a physics grade?+

Yes, if the work between sessions is marked. The session itself is where diagnosis and teaching happen; the marks move because of practice done afterwards and corrected before the next session. One well-used session a week with submitted and annotated work usually outperforms two sessions a week with nothing in between, because the limiting factor is corrected practice rather than contact hours. In a short run-in before the May examinations that changes, and twice weekly with full timed papers becomes the sensible shape.

Does the school's KHDA band tell us anything about its physics department?+

Very little on its own. KHDA inspects Dubai private schools annually and publishes a whole-school band from Outstanding to Very Weak, which can conceal a strong department beside a weak one and cannot reflect a teacher who left in August. More useful questions for physics: whether the school offers Physics at Higher Level every year, how many students sat it last session, whether the same teacher carries it across DP1 and DP2, and what laboratory equipment is actually available for the investigation.

Can physics sessions run in the afternoon given school finishing times here?+

Yes, and this belt is one of the better parts of Dubai for it. Schools around Oud Metha finish early enough that a 3:30pm or 3:45pm slot is genuinely available, which suits physics because graph handling and uncertainty work need an alert student rather than a tired one. Online delivery is what makes that slot usable, since nobody is driving anywhere. During Ramadan the same session usually shifts earlier or moves to a post-Iftar slot, and holiday weeks are often the most productive in a run-in.

Will you tell us if no suitable physics specialist is available?+

Yes, and this is worth asking of anyone. Higher Level physics at a specific hour in Gulf Standard Time is a narrow requirement, and the honest answer is sometimes that nobody suitable is free. We would rather say that than place a tutor who nearly fits, because a term spent with the wrong specialist costs more than a fortnight spent waiting for the right one. Where a child genuinely needs a person physically in the room, we will also say so; IB Gram provides home visits only in India, not in the UAE.
