IB Chemistry Tutor in Karama

Parents comparing an IB chemistry tutor in Karama with one advertised in Oud Metha, Bur Dubai or out in Dubai Marina are comparing the wrong variable. The thing that differs between those listings is the drive, not the chemistry. What actually changes a Diploma chemistry grade is whether the tutor knows the current guide and can mark a script against the published scheme. IB Gram teaches one to one live online on Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial lesson that needs no card.

IB & IGCSE in Karama

The postcode on the advert is the one thing that does not matter

A family in Karama looking for Diploma chemistry help will find listings that name Karama, listings that name Oud Metha, listings that name Bur Dubai, and glossier listings that name Dubai Marina and Jumeirah at higher rates. It is a natural assumption that these represent different levels of service. For chemistry they mostly do not. They represent different travel radii and different marketing budgets. The chemistry a student needs taught is identical in Al Mankhool and in Emirates Hills, and the quality difference between tutors has nothing to do with which side of the creek they live on.

What does differ between neighbourhoods is logistics, and it differs in ways that favour old Dubai. Schools around Oud Metha finish earlier than many of the newer-build schools out along Sheikh Zayed Road, so an afternoon session is genuinely available here. Karama is dense and walkable, so a local tutor could reach a flat quickly. Dubai Marina families, by contrast, often cannot start before six because of the drive. If anything the scheduling advantage sits with this belt, and it is wasted by families who assume the better tutors are elsewhere.

The variable that does decide a chemistry grade is syllabus currency. The current IB chemistry guide is organised into two broad themes, Structure and Reactivity, each with three strands, and it replaced an older topic-and-options structure. A tutor working from the previous architecture will teach competent chemistry that does not map onto what your child's school is teaching or what the papers now ask. Revision guides from the previous era mislead in the same way. This is a real quality difference, it is checkable in one question, and it has nothing to do with location.

The second variable is whether the tutor can mark. Chemistry marks are lost in specific, nameable places: state symbols omitted, significant figures wrong, moles calculated correctly then applied to the wrong species, a mechanism drawn with arrows starting from the wrong place, a command verb asking for an explanation and receiving a description. A tutor who marks a student's own script against the published scheme and names where each mark went is doing something a tutor who simply re-teaches a topic is not, and that distinction is worth far more than a short drive.

The third is the investigation. The internally assessed scientific investigation carries twenty per cent of the final chemistry grade and is marked against four criteria before moderation. It is the component a student controls most completely, the one most often left late, and the one where the boundary between legitimate coaching and academic malpractice has to be stated in writing before any session happens. Nothing about that boundary changes with the neighbourhood either.

So the honest comparison below is between delivery models rather than between postcodes, and the answer comes out the same whether you are in Karama, Oud Metha or on the Palm. Lessons here are delivered one to one, live online. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Karama and Oud Metha belt runs several curricula side by side, so chemistry students arrive here from different places. These are the stages a Diploma chemistry tutor works across.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme Chemistry

Organised into Structure and Reactivity. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much, how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Higher Level adds depth within the strands. Assessment is Paper 1, including a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, Paper 2, and the internally assessed investigation.

Some schools in this belt sequence Reactivity before Structure and others the reverse, which matters because a tutor working to a generic order will reach organic mechanisms either months before or months after the class does. Ask for the school's own scheme of work, and confirm all weightings on its copy of the current subject guide.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme Sciences

Four criteria out of eight each, covering knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Chemistry is taught inside an integrated sciences course for most of MYP, with separation increasing in MYP 4 and 5. The processing and evaluating criterion is the ancestor of the Diploma investigation.

An MYP sciences grade can conceal a chemistry-specific weakness, because a strong overall mark may rest on biology units. Ask the subject teacher for the chemistry-only marks from the last two units before deciding whether a student is ready for Chemistry HL in DP1.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry, as the route in

Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 in most British-curriculum schools near Karama. The assumed Diploma baseline is the Extended or Higher tier: moles and stoichiometry, bonding, rates, energetics, acids and bases, electrolysis, the periodic table and introductory organic chemistry, together with the practical skills the board examines.

The hardest step from IGCSE to Diploma chemistry is quantitative rather than conceptual. Students who passed IGCSE by recalling that moles equal mass over molar mass, without ever reasoning through a limiting reagent, hit trouble in the first Reactivity topics, and that gap is worth closing over a summer rather than in DP1.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Chemistry alongside the Diploma core

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and creativity, activity, service run beside the six subjects. A chemistry Extended Essay is attractive and risky: the research question needs narrowing hard, and school laboratory access limits what data a student can realistically obtain. Supervision stays with the school.

Students in this belt often propose a chemistry Extended Essay that would need equipment their school does not have. Settling the research question and confirming equipment availability in the first term of DP1 avoids a rescue operation in DP2, and it is one of the most useful single conversations a tutor can have.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry is this page, but it sits in an option block. These are the Diploma subjects our specialists cover alongside it, with the part of each that moves the grade.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Structure and Reactivity across both levels, with HL depth inside each strand. Recoverable marks sit in state symbols, significant figures, mole reasoning applied to the right species, and mechanisms drawn with arrows originating correctly.

Biology

HL and SL

The usual partner for a medical or life-sciences application. Content-heavy and command-verb sensitive, with a data-based section marked much like chemistry's, so graph and uncertainty work transfers directly between the two.

Physics

HL and SL

Shares chemistry's quantitative discipline: units, significant figures, substitution written before the answer. Students taking both benefit from one tutor establishing those habits once rather than two tutors establishing them twice.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The algebra behind equilibrium constants, pH calculations and rate expressions. Logarithms in particular appear in chemistry before many students are fully comfortable with them, and that overlap is worth drilling deliberately.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Workable with Chemistry HL, with one gap: the symbolic rearrangement chemistry calculations assume is less drilled on this route. A short front-loaded block on rearrangement and logarithms removes most of the friction.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen analysis under time pressure plus an individual oral needing a line of argument stated early. For science-heavy students this is usually where structure rather than content decides the grade.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy earns marks a paragraph cannot, and the HL quantitative questions reward the same arithmetic care that chemistry calculations do, including units and sensible rounding.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL

Chosen by some students as an interdisciplinary alternative to a second science. Data-handling questions overlap with chemistry's data-based section, and the internal assessment rewards the same early decision about obtainable data.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and the prescribed-title essay. Chemistry students often find the demand inverted, because TOK rewards holding competing claims open rather than resolving to one answer; coaching is about structuring the argument.

Extended Essay

Core

Four thousand words on a self-chosen question, supervised at the school. A chemistry essay is unforgiving of a vague question and of unobtainable data; tutoring is question-shaping and criterion feedback on the student's own drafts.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of chemistry support, and the circumstances in which each is the right purchase. Every session is one to one, live online.

Weekly through-course chemistry

One session a week across DP1 and DP2, following the school's own sequence through the Structure and Reactivity strands rather than a generic order. Each session pairs teaching with past-paper questions on the strand just covered, marked before the next session. The written note names the specific mark-loss category currently costing the most.

  • Strand order taken from the school's scheme of work
  • Questions marked between every session, not summarised
  • Periodic table and data booklet open from session one
  • Mole reasoning rechecked whenever a new strand begins

Investigation coaching block

Three to five sessions around the scientific investigation, timed to the school's internal deadlines. The tutor interrogates the research question, checks whether the chemistry can be done with the equipment the school actually has, and gives criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft. Nothing is written or rewritten and the school's supervisor remains the supervisor.

  • Equipment availability confirmed before the method is finalised
  • Research question narrowed until it is answerable
  • Feedback mapped to the four named criteria
  • The honesty boundary put in writing to parents first

Organic and mechanisms block

A focused run for students who are coping with the quantitative strands and losing marks in organic chemistry. Functional groups, reaction types, and mechanisms drawn with curly arrows starting from the correct lone pair or bond. This is the single most requested chemistry block in this belt and it responds quickly because the failure is usually notational rather than conceptual.

  • Arrow conventions drilled until they are automatic
  • Reaction types sorted by what changes, not by memorised lists
  • Past-paper mechanism questions marked against the scheme
  • Named reagents and conditions tested every session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Karama

01

Karama against the next neighbourhood over: what genuinely differs

Start with the comparison families actually make. A tutor advertising in Oud Metha, one advertising in Bur Dubai and one advertising in Al Mankhool are, for a Karama family, interchangeable on every dimension except how long they would take to arrive. The schools these neighbourhoods feed overlap almost completely. The traffic patterns are similar. The school day ends at similar times. There is no chemistry taught in one of them that is not taught in the others.

Where real differences appear, they are about the school day rather than the tutor. Schools in the Oud Metha cluster tend to finish earlier than the newer-build schools along Sheikh Zayed Road and out towards Dubai Marina, which means a family in this belt can realistically use a 3:30pm or 3:45pm slot while a family in Marina often cannot start before six. For a calculation-heavy subject like chemistry, where arithmetic errors multiply when a student is tired, that is a genuine advantage and it belongs to old Dubai.

The second real difference is household space. Karama and Bur Dubai are apartment neighbourhoods, often with several people home in the evening, while Al Garhoud and the villa communities further out have more rooms to spare. This cuts against an in-home tutor and in favour of an online session that needs a corner rather than a room, and it is the opposite of how the market is usually marketed to these families.

The third is school curriculum mix, which changes what tutoring is asked for rather than how good it is. Karama, Al Mankhool and Bur Dubai feed a high proportion of Indian and Pakistani-curriculum schools alongside British ones, so the Diploma chemistry students from here more often arrive from IGCSE than from MYP. Al Garhoud and the newer communities feed more full-continuum IB schools, so MYP sciences work is proportionally higher there. Neither pattern makes a tutor better; both change the first six weeks of the plan.

02

Karama against Dubai Marina: does the premium postcode buy better chemistry?

The comparison families find hardest to dismiss is with the glossier end of the market. Listings naming Dubai Marina, Jumeirah or Emirates Hills are often presented at higher rates, with more polished websites, and it is reasonable to wonder whether something better is on offer. For Diploma chemistry the answer is that the published rate bands in Dubai divide by tier and not by neighbourhood, and the rate a tutor can charge in Marina reflects what Marina households will pay rather than what the tutor knows.

There is one way in which the premium postcodes genuinely have an advantage, and it is worth being honest about: the density of experienced international-curriculum teachers living in those communities is higher, because that is where several of the large school groups house staff. A family hiring strictly within a short drive in Emirates Hills is choosing from a slightly better-stocked local pool than a family doing the same in Karama. That is a real asymmetry in the in-home market.

It is also exactly the asymmetry online delivery erases. If the match is not geographic, the pool is the same for a family in Karama as for a family on the Palm, and it is larger than either local pool. This is the specific reason the comparison ends in the same place regardless of where you start: the Marina family's advantage only exists inside a delivery model that makes everyone's choice smaller, and the moment you leave that model the advantage disappears.

Against that, the Karama family keeps its own advantage. The school day here ends earlier, so the best afternoon slots are available, and the household does not need to free a room for a visitor. A Marina family paying a premium for an in-home tutor at 6:30pm after a long school run is buying a tired student and a drive. A Karama family paying the online mid-band rate at 3:45pm is buying an alert student and a specialist. The second arrangement is both cheaper and better, which is not how the market advertises itself.

Structure and Reactivity: how the current chemistry guide is actually built

The current IB chemistry syllabus is organised under two themes. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Higher Level content sits inside those strands rather than in a separate options block. Assessment is Paper 1, containing a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, Paper 2, and the internally assessed investigation; confirm the current weightings on your school's own copy of the guide.

This architecture matters practically because it cuts across the order chemistry was traditionally taught in. Schools sequence the strands differently from one another, and a tutor working to a generic order will be teaching organic mechanisms either long before or long after the class reaches them. The first question a chemistry tutor should ask is not how the student is finding chemistry; it is which strand the school is currently in and what it covered last term.

It also changes what a student should be revising when. Because the strands are conceptual rather than topical, the same idea reappears in different clothing: the bonding model built in Structure explains the reaction mechanisms in Reactivity, and a student with a shaky bonding model will struggle in organic chemistry for reasons that look like organic chemistry and are not. Diagnosing that requires looking back a strand rather than drilling the one the student is failing.

For Higher Level the extra depth concentrates in a few predictable places: the quantitative treatment of equilibrium and acids and bases, the energetics of lattice and solution processes, and the mechanisms strand where reaction pathways are examined in more detail. A student coping at Standard Level does not automatically cope at Higher, and the usual limiting factor is comfort with logarithms and with multi-step quantitative reasoning rather than interest in chemistry.

04

Where chemistry marks disappear, and why re-teaching the topic often misses them

  • State symbols and units treated as compulsory, not optional
  • Mole reasoning rebuilt from limiting reagents, not from a formula
  • Titration arithmetic drilled with uncertainty carried through
  • Curly-arrow convention made automatic before mechanisms are revised
  • Command verbs identified before the answer is written

Chemistry is a subject where a student can know the content and still lose a substantial number of marks, and the categories are specific enough to list. State symbols left out of an equation. Significant figures carried wrongly from a titration calculation. Moles computed correctly then applied to the wrong species in the balanced equation. A mechanism drawn with the curly arrow starting from the atom rather than the lone pair or the bond. A command verb asking for an explanation and receiving a description. Units omitted from an enthalpy value.

Each of those is a habit rather than a knowledge gap, and each is fixed by marking rather than by teaching. This is why the most useful first session with a chemistry tutor involves the student's own script rather than a textbook. A specialist reading a paper against the published scheme can tell a parent within an hour whether their child needs chemistry taught or chemistry marked, and the two cost the same and produce very different results.

The quantitative failures deserve separate attention because they are the largest single category in this belt, where most Diploma chemistry students arrive from IGCSE. At IGCSE a student can survive by recalling that moles equal mass divided by molar mass. Diploma questions require reasoning through a limiting reagent, tracking a ratio from a balanced equation, converting between concentration and amount in a titration, and carrying uncertainty through the result. A student who never built that reasoning has a gap that looks like weakness across the whole subject and is in fact one skill.

Organic chemistry is the other large category and it is usually notational. Students who cannot keep mechanisms straight are frequently not confused about the chemistry; they are drawing arrows inconsistently, which makes their own notes unreadable to them a week later. Drilling the convention — arrows from a lone pair or a bond to where the electrons go, with the charge balance checked — tends to resolve a fortnight of apparent confusion in two sessions.

05

The chemistry investigation: four criteria and a boundary that does not move

The internally assessed scientific investigation carries twenty per cent of the final chemistry grade. It is a single piece of independent experimental work, written within the word limit the current guide sets, marked by the school against four criteria and then moderated by the IB. For a student whose examination technique is shaky it is the most controllable fifth of the grade available; for a student who starts it in the last available week it is the fifth most easily lost.

The criteria are research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each carrying six marks. In chemistry, research design fails most often on equipment: a student proposes a question requiring a spectrophotometer or a controlled-temperature bath the school does not have, and the method quietly degrades until the data cannot support any conclusion. One session spent confirming what apparatus the laboratory actually holds, before the question is finalised, is the highest-value intervention available in the whole component.

Data analysis rewards correct processing, honest uncertainty treatment and graphs that show something. Conclusion rewards an answer to the stated question, supported by the data and compared against accepted values or literature where relevant. Evaluation rewards specific chemical criticism of the method — heat loss to the surroundings, incomplete reaction, an assumption about purity — and loses marks for generic statements about human error that could have been written about any experiment in any subject.

The boundary is firm and should be in writing before any session. An IB Gram tutor will interrogate the research question, teach the chemistry involved, check whether the method can produce usable data, explain what a criterion requires and mark the student's own draft against it. An IB Gram tutor will not supply the research question, write any part of the report, rewrite the student's prose or produce the analysis the student submits. The school's supervisor remains the supervisor and the authenticity declaration remains your child's.

What chemistry tutoring costs across these neighbourhoods, and what the tiers mean

Published Dubai rates divide by tier, and the same bands apply in Karama, Oud Metha and Dubai Marina alike. Qualified subject tutors working online are quoted at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above; TutorChase lists AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table gives AED 200 to AED 450 and upwards. Budget online tutoring runs from roughly AED 45 to AED 150, with EdFlik publishing AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya quoting from AED 33 to AED 52. Premium named tutors reach AED 650 at BartyED.

In-home visits form a separate band because travel is priced inside the hour. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to AED 500. Monthly packages circulating in this market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-band and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist examination-year work. All of these are other providers' figures.

Set against those bands, a tutoring budget sits inside a wider picture of school costs. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. That freeze does not change tutoring rates, but it does mean a family planning a two-year Diploma budget is working from a stable school-fee figure rather than an escalating one.

The useful comparison for a Karama family is therefore not between neighbourhoods but between what each band delivers. At the budget end a tutor can supervise practice and re-explain a topic. In the mid-band you should expect current-guide teaching and marked work returned. At the specialist end you should expect script marking against the published scheme, investigation feedback and the ability to say which strand the problem actually lives in. Ask for the second and third of those explicitly, because they are what moves a chemistry grade. For IB Gram's own arrangements, start with the free trial lesson and the consultation.

The in-home question, answered the same way from either side of the creek

Put the two neighbourhoods side by side on the in-home decision and the conclusion matches. A Karama family hiring someone who can attend chooses from tutors living in old Dubai and free at the student's hour. A Dubai Marina family hiring someone who can attend chooses from tutors living along the Marina and Jumeirah Lakes Towers corridor and free at the student's hour. Both pools are smaller than the online pool, and for Higher Level chemistry — current guide, able to mark a data-based question, able to advise on an investigation method — both are small in absolute terms.

The cost comparison also lands the same way. The in-home band sits at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour against AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online tutor. In Karama the premium pays for a ten-minute drive. In Marina it pays for a longer one. Neither premium buys better chemistry teaching, and in a two-year Diploma that difference compounds into a figure worth noticing.

Where the neighbourhoods diverge is on the practical details, and Karama wins more of them than families expect. The afternoon slot is available here and often not in Marina. The flat does not need a spare room for an online session, which matters more in an apartment neighbourhood than in a villa community. And an online arrangement survives a tutor relocating within Dubai, which in a city with this much household turnover is a real consideration across two DP years rather than a theoretical one.

The honest exception is unchanged by postcode: a much younger or very distractible student benefits from a person in the room in a way video does not replicate. For a DP1 or DP2 chemistry student it almost never decides anything. IB Gram does not offer in-home visits anywhere in the UAE — home tutoring is a service we provide only in India — so where a child genuinely needs someone physically present, we will tell you rather than sell the online version as an equivalent.

Regulators, permits and the claims nobody in this market should make

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which on the UAE government's own description is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi has ADEK, Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. In 2024-25 Dubai's private sector held 387,441 students across 227 schools offering seventeen curricula, with UK curriculum at 37 per cent of enrolment, Indian at 26, US at 14 and the IB at 7.

Private tutoring is permitted and regulated through MoHRE. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is open to teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students. Applications go through MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service. Tutoring without a permit carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so any specific amount quoted to you is unverified. Separately, Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, which is press-reported and worth checking against the current ADEK policy document.

None of that is an endorsement of anybody. IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB or Cambridge, and a KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific authorisation for training institutes operating premises in Dubai, which we do not hold and do not claim. We do not describe tutors as IB examiners without evidence of current status, and examiner status gives nobody access to marking decisions, grade boundaries or unseen papers.

The practical limits follow. We will not supply IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads, because they belong to the board; a tutor references them, teaches from them in the session and points you at the official source. We will not predict a grade or promise an improvement. And we will not write, complete or produce any assessed work, including the investigation, the Extended Essay and the TOK essay. A tutor who offers to is offering your child an expulsion risk dressed up as a service.

Karama sits inside a belt of old Dubai neighbourhoods that share schools, traffic patterns and school-day timings. These are the areas families compare against each other when they search for a tutor, and what genuinely differs between them.

Dense mid-rise flats, walkable streets and schools minutes away. The limiting factor for a chemistry session is a desk with room for a periodic table and a calculator, not travel.

Oud Metha

The school cluster itself, with early finishing times. The genuine local advantage is a 3:30pm slot, which matters for calculation-heavy subjects where a tired student makes arithmetic errors.

Al Mankhool

Mixed British and Indian-board families. Chemistry requests from here skew towards the IGCSE to Diploma transition, where mole reasoning rather than recall is the recurring gap.

Bur Dubai

Older buildings and larger households, often with two children sitting science examinations in the same series. Staggered short sessions work better here than one shared slot.

Al Jafiliya

Metro access widens school choice, so option blocks vary more. We see more students pairing Chemistry HL with Applications and Interpretation maths from this area.

Al Garhoud

Low-rise near the airport and Deira International School, with more full-continuum IB students. MYP sciences work features more heavily than in Karama itself.

Al Satwa

Dense, low-rise, a short hop to Jumeirah-side schools. Requests lean towards IGCSE chemistry and the practical component rather than Diploma work.

Al Quoz

Mixed residential and industrial, with a longer school run than the rest of this belt. Session timing here resembles the newer communities more than it resembles Karama.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Karama

The Karama, Oud Metha and Bur Dubai schools

This cluster is mostly British, Indian and Pakistani curriculum, which is why Diploma chemistry students from here usually arrive from IGCSE. The first six weeks of tutoring are shaped by that route more than by anything else.

  • The Indian High School, Oud Metha
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Dubai English Speaking School
  • Pakistan Education Academy
  • Our Own English High School, Al Warqa

The comparison cluster: newer-build IB schools further out

These are the schools Karama families name when they ask whether tutors out in the newer communities are better. The chemistry is the same; the school day is longer and the drive is worse, which is why online delivery suits those families as much as it suits this belt.

  • Deira International School
  • Dubai International Academy, Al Barsha
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Hartland International School
  • GEMS Wellington Academy, Al Khail

Schools are named purely as context for the local education market. IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school named, and the students we support attend a wide range of schools across Dubai.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the strand, not just the subject

Chemistry HL or SL, and which of the Structure and Reactivity strands the school has covered. Schools sequence these differently, and a tutor working to a generic order teaches organic mechanisms at the wrong time. The school's scheme of work settles it in one email.

  2. 02

Send a script, ideally with a calculation on it

A recent paper with the marks shown. Our specialist allocates every lost mark — state symbols, significant figures, mole reasoning, mechanisms, command verbs — and tells you whether your child needs chemistry taught or chemistry marked.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, no card required

A full session with the matched chemistry specialist in a slot that uses the early finish in this belt, at no charge and with no payment details taken first. A written note follows naming the categories costing marks and the first six weeks' targets.

  4. 04

    Confirm the investigation timeline

If the scientific investigation is live, we fix the coaching block against the school's internal deadlines and confirm what apparatus the laboratory actually holds before the research question is finalised. That order matters more than anything else in the component.

  5. 05

Review in marks and change if needed

At six weeks, raw marks on comparable questions with the category breakdown alongside. If nothing is moving we change the plan or the tutor. If no HL specialist is free at your hour, we say so rather than place someone who nearly fits.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The same specialist from any Dubai address

Because the match is not geographic, a family in Karama chooses from exactly the pool a family in Emirates Hills chooses from, and it is larger than either local pool. That is the whole of the neighbourhood comparison, resolved.

Current-guide teaching, checked

Structure and Reactivity replaced an older topic-and-options architecture. We match tutors teaching the current guide, and we plan from the school's own sequence rather than from a generic textbook order.

Marking, not just explaining

Chemistry marks vanish into state symbols, significant figures, mole reasoning and arrow conventions. Those are found by marking a student's own script against the published scheme, which is a different service from re-teaching a topic.

The afternoon slot used

Schools in this belt finish early. We schedule into 3:30pm and 3:45pm deliberately, because calculation-heavy chemistry goes badly with a student who has already been awake for eleven hours.

Investigation help with the boundary written down

Research question interrogated, apparatus checked, criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft. Nothing written, nothing rewritten, nothing supplied for submission, and that stated to parents before the block begins.

Online delivery, said in advance

Live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE homes; home visits are a service offered only in India, and that appears here rather than surfacing at the point of booking.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Karama: your questions answered

Are chemistry tutors in Dubai Marina better than ones advertising in Karama?+

Not in any way that affects the chemistry. Published Dubai rate bands divide by tier rather than by neighbourhood, and a higher advertised rate in a premium community reflects what those households pay rather than what the tutor knows. There is one real asymmetry: more experienced international-curriculum teachers live in the newer communities, so a family hiring strictly within a short drive there has a slightly better-stocked local pool. Online delivery removes that asymmetry entirely, because the pool stops being geographic and becomes the same for both families.

What does the current IB chemistry guide actually cover?+

Two themes with three strands each. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Higher Level content sits inside those strands rather than in a separate options block, which is a change from older syllabuses. Revision guides written for the previous architecture do not map cleanly, so plan from your school's own copy of the current subject guide.

Why does my child's chemistry grade not move when we revise the topic they are failing?+

Often because the failure lives a strand earlier. The bonding model built in Structure explains the mechanisms examined in Reactivity, so a student with a shaky bonding model struggles in organic chemistry for reasons that look like organic chemistry. The other common explanation is that the marks are being lost to habits rather than knowledge: omitted state symbols, wrong significant figures, moles applied to the wrong species, arrows drawn from the wrong origin. Those are found by marking a script, not by revising a chapter.

My child finds organic chemistry impossible. Is that actually fixable?+

Usually, and faster than expected, because the problem is often notational rather than conceptual. Students who cannot keep mechanisms straight are frequently drawing curly arrows inconsistently, which makes their own notes unreadable to them a week later. Drilling the convention until it is automatic — arrows originating from a lone pair or a bond, going to where the electrons end up, with charge balance checked each time — tends to resolve a fortnight of apparent confusion in about two sessions. Sorting reactions by what changes rather than by memorised lists does the rest.

How much of the chemistry grade comes from the investigation?+

Twenty per cent. It is a single piece of independent experimental work, written within the word limit the current guide sets, marked by the school against four criteria — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each worth six marks — and then moderated by the IB. Confirm the current weighting and word limit on your school's own copy of the guide. For a student whose examination technique is unreliable it is the most controllable fifth of the grade; for one who starts it late it is the easiest fifth to lose.

What is the most common mistake in a chemistry investigation?+

Choosing a research question the school's laboratory cannot support. A student proposes work needing a spectrophotometer or a temperature-controlled bath that does not exist, the method quietly degrades to fit what is available, and the data then cannot support any conclusion the criteria would reward. One session spent confirming the actual apparatus before the question is finalised is the highest-value intervention in the whole component. Evaluation is the second weak point, where generic statements about human error replace specific chemical criticism such as heat loss or incomplete reaction.

Is Chemistry HL a big step up from SL for a student coming out of IGCSE?+

Yes, and the limiting factor is usually quantitative confidence rather than interest. Higher Level depth concentrates in the quantitative treatment of equilibrium and acids and bases, the energetics of lattice and solution processes, and the mechanisms strand. Logarithms in particular appear in pH and equilibrium work before many students are entirely comfortable with them. A student who passed IGCSE by recalling that moles equal mass over molar mass, without reasoning through a limiting reagent, needs that gap closed before HL content lands rather than during it.

Which maths course pairs best with Chemistry HL?+

Analysis and Approaches gives the smoothest ride, because the symbolic rearrangement and logarithmic work chemistry calculations assume are drilled on that route. Applications and Interpretation is entirely workable but leaves one gap to manage deliberately: rearrangement and logarithms are less practised there, and chemistry examines both inside its own papers. A short front-loaded block early in DP1, drilling those skills on chemistry quantities rather than abstract ones, removes most of the friction. The combination is common and nothing about it should discourage a student.

What should we expect for our money at each rate band in Dubai?+

At the budget band, roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour from EdFlik and Tutopiya's published figures, expect supervised practice and re-explanation of content already taught. In the AED 150 to AED 300 band, where Unitors publishes IB from AED 200, expect current-guide teaching with work marked and returned. At AED 200 to AED 450 and above, where TutorChase lists AED 270, expect script marking against the published scheme and investigation feedback. Ask explicitly for the last two, because they are what moves a chemistry grade.

Does the in-home premium make sense anywhere in Dubai for Diploma chemistry?+

Rarely, and the arithmetic is the same from any address. The published in-home band is AED 180 to AED 500 an hour against AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online tutor, and that difference buys travel rather than better teaching. In Karama it buys a ten-minute drive; in Marina a longer one. It also shrinks the choice of tutor to those living nearby and free at your hour, which bites hardest on Higher Level specialisms. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India.

Do schools in this part of Dubai finish early enough for an afternoon session?+

Yes, and it is the clearest practical advantage this belt has. Schools around Oud Metha and Karama generally finish earlier than newer-build schools along Sheikh Zayed Road, so a 3:30pm or 3:45pm slot is genuinely usable. That matters more for chemistry than for an essay subject, because titration arithmetic and multi-step mole reasoning go badly with a tired student. Families further out often cannot start before six after the drive home, which is one reason online delivery suits them as much as it suits families here.

Do private school fees in Dubai affect what we should budget for tutoring?+

Indirectly, in that the school-fee side of the budget is currently stable. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. That freeze does not change tutoring rates, which are set by the market, but it does mean a family planning a two-year Diploma budget is working from a fixed fee figure rather than an escalating one.

Does our tutor need a permit, and what should we ask to see?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Applications go through MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service. Ask any tutor directly whether they hold it. Also note that Abu Dhabi's ethics rules bar school staff from tutoring students enrolled at their own school, so never seek your child's own teacher privately.

Can a tutor give feedback on a chemistry Extended Essay draft?+

Feedback on the student's own draft, yes; writing or rewriting it, no. A tutor can help narrow a research question until it is answerable, point out that the data available cannot support the argument being attempted, teach the chemistry involved and explain what each criterion requires. The supervisor at your child's school remains the supervisor of record and the authenticity declaration remains your child's. We will not supply a research question, draft a section or produce analysis for submission, and any service offering that is offering a malpractice risk.

What happens if no Higher Level chemistry specialist is free at our time?+

We tell you, and we would rather do that than fill the slot. Current-guide Higher Level chemistry at a specific hour in Gulf Standard Time is a narrow requirement, and a near-enough tutor is specifically expensive in this subject: the sessions feel productive, the content gets re-explained, and the mark-scheme detail that was actually costing the marks goes unaddressed for a term. Where waiting a fortnight for the right specialist is the better option, we will say so, and where a child genuinely needs a person in the room we will say that too.

One script, one trial lesson, and the comparison settles itself

Tell us whether it is Chemistry HL or SL, which Structure and Reactivity strands the school has taught, and send one recent paper with the marks on it. A Diploma chemistry specialist marks it against the published scheme and names where each mark went, then teaches a free trial lesson in an afternoon slot this belt can actually use, with no card needed to book. You will have a written note afterwards and a clear view of whether your child needs chemistry taught or chemistry marked. Lessons run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.
