IGCSE Science Tutor in Karama

Booking an IGCSE science tutor in Karama starts with a question most families cannot answer from the school report: which science qualification is your child actually sitting? Separate biology, chemistry and physics, co-ordinated sciences, combined science or a double award are four different examinations with different papers. IB Gram matches the syllabus code on the entry, teaches one to one live online on Gulf Standard Time, and begins with a free trial lesson needing no card.

IB & IGCSE in Karama

Four different qualifications all called science

Ask ten Karama parents what their child is studying for science at IGCSE and most will say science. Ask the school and the answer will be one of four quite different things. Three separate subjects, each with its own syllabus code and its own papers. A co-ordinated sciences course that covers all three disciplines in one qualification worth a single grade. A combined science course covering less content for a single grade. Or a double award covering all three for two grades. These are not interchangeable, the papers differ, and revision material for the wrong one is money spent on confusion.

The board matters as much as the route. Cambridge biology is 0610, chemistry 0620 and physics 0625, with co-ordinated sciences at 0654 and combined science at 0653. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 for the separate subjects and a double award option. The content overlaps substantially between the boards, but the paper structures, the formulae supplied and the way practical skills are assessed differ, which is exactly where marks are won and lost. A tutor who does not ask for the code is planning from guesswork.

Then there is the tier. Cambridge separates Core and Extended; Pearson's separate sciences are untiered while other routes differ. The lower tier caps the attainable grade, and in this belt a student is sometimes sitting Core because a class was split in Year 9 and nobody revisited the decision. If a tier change is still possible, that is the most consequential conversation available to a family this term, and it has an administrative deadline attached rather than an academic one.

The fourth variable is the practical component, and it is the one parents understand least. Cambridge assesses practical skills either by a practical test or by an alternative-to-practical written paper, and schools choose. That choice changes revision completely: the alternative-to-practical paper is a written examination about experiments, rewarding precise language about variables, apparatus and sources of error rather than laboratory dexterity. Students who are strong in the laboratory and weak at writing about it lose marks there routinely.

Once those four facts are settled, the teaching is specific rather than general. Biology marks are lost to command words and imprecise terminology. Chemistry marks are lost to moles, state symbols and significant figures. Physics marks are lost to rearrangement, units and graph gradients. Each science fails in its own way, and a tutor covering all three for a co-ordinated candidate has to teach three different sets of habits rather than one general approach to science.

What follows is the detail: the routes compared, the papers, the practical component, the command words, and the specific traps in each discipline. Lessons are delivered one to one, live online. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India.

Science at IGCSE in this belt is entered in several different ways, and students arrive from several different places. These are the stages a science tutor works across around Karama.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Separate sciences: biology, chemistry and physics

Three qualifications, three grades. Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625; Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. Each has its own content, its own papers and its own practical assessment arrangement. This is the route schools use for students heading towards A Level or Diploma sciences, and it carries the most content of the four routes by a considerable margin.

Separate sciences take three option slots, which in a nine-subject timetable squeezes everything else. Families in this belt sometimes discover in Year 11 that the workload is unsustainable alongside additional mathematics. Reviewing the subject count at the end of Year 10, with marked evidence, is more useful than reviewing it in March.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Co-ordinated sciences

Cambridge 0654: all three disciplines in one qualification worth a single grade, covering roughly two thirds of the separate-science content. It occupies two option slots rather than three and remains acceptable for many post-16 science routes, though the receiving school's own entry requirement decides that. Papers assess all three disciplines, so a weakness in one pulls the single grade down.

The hidden risk in co-ordinated sciences is a student who is strong in biology and weak in physics. One grade means the weak discipline drags the whole result, and schools report progress by discipline rarely enough that parents sometimes do not see it coming. Ask for discipline-level marks from the last internal assessment.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Combined science and double award routes

Cambridge 0653 combined science covers all three disciplines for a single grade with less content again, taking one option slot. Pearson offers a double award covering all three for two grades. Both suit students whose strengths sit elsewhere, and both can restrict post-16 science options, so the decision needs checking against where the student intends to go.

Before choosing a reduced-content route, ask the post-16 destination for its own published entry requirement for A Level or Diploma sciences. Guidance varies noticeably between Dubai schools even within the same curriculum, and a route that is acceptable at one is not always acceptable at the next.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

MYP sciences, as the alternative route to sixteen

The IB continuum alternative, assessed on four criteria out of eight each rather than by terminal examination. Students transferring from MYP into an IGCSE science cohort usually bring strong investigation skills and weaker timed-paper technique, because MYP assessment is not built around an examination at the end.

A mid-course transfer into Year 11 IGCSE science from MYP needs a fast audit of specific content the student has never met, particularly on the Extended tier. In chemistry the usual gap is quantitative work; in physics it is rearrangement and electrical circuits.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Science at IGCSE is three disciplines plus the practical component, and students in this belt usually need help in one or two rather than all three. These are the subjects our IGCSE specialists cover.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1

Content-heavy and terminology-sensitive. Marks are lost to command words and to imprecise language: a student who writes that something gets bigger where the scheme wants increases in surface area loses marks they understood the biology for.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

Moles, concentration, titration arithmetic, electrolysis and organic families. The recoverable marks sit in state symbols, significant figures and applying a ratio from the balanced equation to the right species rather than the convenient one.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

Forces, electricity, waves, thermal physics and magnetism. Marks go to rearrangement done correctly, units stated, and gradients read from a best-fit line rather than from two adjacent data points.

Co-ordinated Sciences

Cambridge 0654

All three disciplines in one grade. Tutoring here has to be triaged by discipline, because the single grade is pulled down by whichever discipline is weakest and that is usually visible in marked work long before it shows in a report.

Combined Science

Cambridge 0653

Reduced content across all three disciplines for one grade. The right objective is usually securing every accessible mark rather than stretch work, because most of the paper's marks sit in straightforward recall and simple calculation.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 · Pearson 4MA1

The hidden prerequisite for science marks. Rearranging formulae, standard form, ratio and percentage work and graph skills are all examined inside science papers, so weak mathematics costs marks twice.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge 0606 / school-dependent

Taken by some students heading for A Level sciences. It introduces calculus and more advanced trigonometry early, and its workload needs sequencing against three separate sciences rather than stacked on top of them.

Computer Science

Cambridge 0478 · Pearson 4CP0

Binary, logic gates and pseudocode tracing. Students who enjoy the systematic side of physics often take it well, and the data-representation content overlaps with number work in mathematics.

Geography

Cambridge 0460 · Pearson 4GE1

Data response and graph interpretation marked much as the science data questions are, so graph skills built for science transfer here. Case-study specificity is what separates grades.

English Language

Cambridge 0500 / 0990 · Pearson 4EA1

The transferable skill with science is reading what was actually asked and allocating time by marks available. Students who over-write cheap questions in English do the same thing in a science paper.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways science support is bought in this belt, chosen by what the marked work shows. All of it runs one to one, live online.

Single-discipline repair

The most common request here, and usually the right one. A co-ordinated or separate-science student is losing marks in one discipline and holding the others. Tutoring targets that discipline only, with its specific habits: terminology in biology, mole reasoning in chemistry, rearrangement in physics. Work is set and marked between sessions so the movement is visible in marks.

  • One discipline at a time, chosen from marked evidence
  • Discipline-specific habits drilled, not general study skills
  • Past-paper questions from the correct board and tier
  • Reassessed after six weeks before adding a second discipline

All-three triage for co-ordinated candidates

For students sitting one grade across biology, chemistry and physics, where the single grade is being pulled down by whichever discipline is weakest. The block starts with a full paper marked by discipline, then allocates session time in proportion to marks available rather than evenly across the three.

  • Diagnostic paper marked and split by discipline
  • Time allocated by marks on offer, not by subject count
  • The weakest discipline front-loaded
  • Progress tracked per discipline, not as a single grade

Practical and alternative-to-practical preparation

A short block on the practical component, which is written rather than laboratory-based where a school enters students for the alternative paper. Variables, apparatus choice, sources of error, precision of measurement and how to write a method someone else could follow. This is a bounded body of technique with a predictable question style and it responds very quickly.

  • Independent, dependent and control variables named precisely
  • Apparatus selection justified by the precision required
  • Sources of error separated from mistakes
  • Methods written to be repeatable, not merely descriptive

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Karama

01

Which science qualification is your child actually sitting?

This is the first question and it decides everything downstream. A school can enter a student for separate sciences, giving three grades from three syllabuses; for Cambridge co-ordinated sciences 0654, giving one grade across all three disciplines at roughly two thirds of the separate content; for Cambridge combined science 0653, giving one grade with less content again; or for a double award covering all three disciplines for two grades. Each route has a different paper structure and a different content load.

The differences have consequences beyond revision. Separate sciences occupy three option slots, which in a nine-subject timetable is a significant commitment and is the usual reason a Year 11 workload becomes unmanageable. Co-ordinated sciences occupy two and remain acceptable for many post-16 science routes, though that is decided by the receiving school's published entry requirement rather than by a general rule. Combined science occupies one and can close doors that a family did not know were open.

The risk specific to the single-grade routes is concentration. With one grade covering three disciplines, a student who is strong in biology and weak in physics has their whole science result pulled down by the weak discipline, and schools report by discipline rarely enough that this can arrive as a surprise in a mock result. The remedy is simple and worth doing this term: ask for discipline-level marks from the last internal assessment rather than an overall science grade.

For a tutor the practical consequence is that session time cannot be split evenly. A co-ordinated candidate losing forty marks in physics and eight in biology should not be having one session each. Our tutors start with a full past paper from the correct syllabus, marked and broken down by discipline, then allocate the block in proportion to the marks actually available. That sounds obvious and it is the opposite of how all-three science tutoring is usually sold.

The papers, the tiers, and the practical component schools choose

Cambridge science syllabuses are tiered into Core and Extended, with the Core tier capping the attainable grade. Pearson's separate sciences are structured differently. A student entered for Core cannot reach the top grades, and in this belt that entry is sometimes a leftover from a Year 9 class split rather than a current judgement. If a tier change is still administratively possible, that conversation beats any amount of revision planning, and it has a school deadline attached that usually falls earlier than the board's.

The practical component is the part families understand least and it changes revision completely. Cambridge assesses practical skills either through a practical test or through an alternative-to-practical written paper, and the school chooses which. Where the alternative paper applies, the examination is written: it asks about variables, apparatus, measurement precision, sources of error and how to describe a method someone else could repeat. Laboratory confidence is not what is being tested; precise written description is.

That distinction produces a specific and common failure. A student who is competent and confident in the laboratory, who gets good results and enjoys practical work, can score poorly on the alternative-to-practical paper because they have never been taught to write about an experiment in the language the scheme rewards. Naming the independent, dependent and control variables precisely, justifying an apparatus choice by the precision it offers, and distinguishing a source of error from a mistake are all taught skills with predictable question styles.

Because they are bounded and predictable, these are among the best-value tutoring sessions available in IGCSE science. A student who cannot touch these questions at the start of a short block will usually answer them competently after three or four focused sessions on real past papers. The same is not true of a genuine content gap across a whole discipline, which is why our tutors front-load the practical component in a run-in and tackle content gaps in order of marks available afterwards.

03

Command words: the single cheapest source of recovered marks in science

  • State, describe, explain, suggest, compare, calculate — six different answer shapes
  • Describe answers given to explain questions is the costliest single error
  • Suggest questions reward reasoning from the information given
  • Comparisons need both sides in the same sentence
  • Biology marks are tied to specific vocabulary, not to general accuracy

Science papers are written around command words, and a student who answers in the wrong shape loses marks on content they knew. State wants a bare fact with no reasoning. Describe wants what happens, in order, with no causes. Explain wants causes, with the word because doing real work. Suggest wants a plausible answer applied to an unfamiliar context, and is marked generously provided the science is sound. Compare wants both sides in the same sentence. Calculate wants the working shown.

The commonest expensive error is describing where the scheme asked for an explanation. A student writes a fluent paragraph about what the graph does and earns no marks, because every mark on offer was for why. The second commonest is answering suggest questions as though they were recall questions, which produces a blank where a reasoned guess from the given information would have scored. The third is giving one side of a comparison.

This is drillable in two sessions and it does not require any new science. Take twenty real past-paper stems from the correct board, identify the command word in each, write the required shape of answer without doing the science, then check against the published scheme. Students find it tedious and the marks move faster than they do for any content work, which is why our tutors do it early in a block rather than saving it for revision.

Terminology sits alongside command words, particularly in biology. Mark schemes award specific words: diffusion rather than moves, surface area rather than size, enzyme rather than chemical. A student who understands the biology perfectly and writes it in everyday language loses marks steadily across a whole paper, and the fix is a vocabulary discipline built through marked practice rather than a reading list.

Three disciplines, three different failure modes

Treating science as one subject is the mistake that wastes tutoring hours. Biology, chemistry and physics fail differently at IGCSE, and a tutor who teaches all three for a co-ordinated candidate has to switch habits as well as content between them.

Biology fails on language and volume. The content is large, mostly recall, and marked against specific terminology, so the student who loses marks here is usually not confused about the biology but imprecise in writing it. Alongside that sits the data-handling element: graph reading, table interpretation and drawing a conclusion that the data actually supports. Both are fixed by marked practice rather than by rereading notes, and rereading notes is what most students default to because it feels like revision.

Chemistry fails on quantitative work. Moles, concentration, titration arithmetic, percentage yield and empirical formulae are where the available marks concentrate, and the errors are specific: a ratio taken from an unbalanced equation, moles applied to the wrong species, state symbols omitted, significant figures carried wrongly, a unit left off a concentration. Each of those is a habit. A student who fixes the habits usually recovers more marks than one who rereads the periodic table trends.

Physics fails on mathematics. Rearranging an equation where the subject is not already isolated, converting between units and prefixes, reading a gradient from a best-fit line rather than from two adjacent points, and stating a unit with every numerical answer. Students who relied on a formula triangle at Year 9 hit this wall in Year 11, and it reads as a physics problem while being an algebra problem. Diagnosing which of the three disciplines is actually costing the marks, and why, is the work of the first session rather than the tenth.

Graphs, tables and calculations: the skills shared across all three sciences

  • Best-fit lines, not point-to-point joins
  • Both axes labelled with quantity and unit, every time
  • Gradients from widely separated points on the line
  • Substitution written before the answer; unit always stated
  • Full precision carried through, rounded once at the end

A cluster of skills appears in every science paper regardless of discipline, and improving them moves marks in biology, chemistry and physics at once. That makes them the most efficient thing to teach a co-ordinated or separate-science candidate who is short of time, and they are routinely compressed out of a crowded school year.

Graph work comes first. Plotting points accurately, choosing a scale that uses the grid, drawing a line that fits the data rather than connecting the first and last points, labelling both axes with quantity and unit, and reading a gradient from two widely separated points on the line. Each of those carries marks and each is mechanically checkable. A student who loses a mark per graph question across three sciences is losing more than most content gaps cost them.

Table and data interpretation comes second. Reading a value correctly from a table with mixed units, spotting a trend and stating it in the direction the question asked, identifying an anomalous result and saying why it is anomalous rather than simply that it is. The discipline here is to answer the question asked rather than the question the student expected, which in data questions is a frequent and expensive divergence.

Calculation discipline comes third and overlaps with mathematics. Show the substitution before the answer. Carry full precision through intermediate steps and round once at the end. State the unit. Use an appropriate number of significant figures rather than everything the calculator displayed. Convert prefixes carefully, especially between milli, micro and kilo. None of this is science, all of it is marked in science papers, and all of it can be fixed in a handful of sessions with marked practice.

06

The series, the deadlines and what a short run-in can realistically do

UAE candidates sit IGCSE sciences in two series: June and November. Cambridge runs a June series and a November series for international candidates and allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, stating plainly that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone's timetable. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE examinations are available in May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026.

Results arrive long after the papers, and that gap drives the resit decision. Pearson's June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Because the window between a result and the next entry deadline is short, a November resit has to be considered before the June result lands rather than after it. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series and revises them, so every date should be checked against the board's live official timetable rather than a saved copy.

With a short run-in — six to ten weeks — a science plan has to be built backwards from the papers. Week one is a full past paper from the correct syllabus and tier, marked and split by discipline, producing a breakdown of marks lost to content, to command words, to calculation and to the practical component. Those four categories have four different remedies, and the proportions decide everything that follows.

What a short block can do is recover accessible marks: command-word technique, calculation discipline, graph skills and the practical paper's written language. What it cannot do is teach a discipline from scratch, which is why a co-ordinated candidate who has effectively not learned physics is a different proposition from one who has learned it and keeps losing marks. We will say which case we think yours is after the diagnostic rather than before it.

What IGCSE science tutoring costs around Karama, counted three ways

Science is where the per-subject arithmetic bites, because a family helping with all three disciplines is buying three times as much tutoring as a family helping with one. Published Dubai rates divide by tier. Budget online tutoring runs from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, with EdFlik publishing AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya quoting from AED 33 to AED 52. Qualified subject tutors working online are quoted at AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. IGCSE and IB specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, TutorChase listing AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table giving AED 200 to AED 450 and upwards.

Counted monthly, Bestimate's estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-band and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist examination-year work. Packages advertised in Dubai include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. In-home one-to-one is quoted separately at AED 180 to AED 350 by Bestimate, with independent home tutors advertising AED 200 to AED 500, because travel is priced inside the hour.

Counted by discipline, the sensible approach for most Karama families is narrower than three tutors. Start with the discipline the marked work identifies as weakest, run six weeks, measure, and only then decide whether a second is needed. A family paying mid-band rates for one discipline for twelve weeks usually gets more movement than one paying budget rates for three disciplines for four weeks, because single-discipline work can go deep enough to change habits rather than merely covering ground.

What a parent can check for themselves is the useful filter. Ask which syllabus code and tier the tutor has taught and when. Ask them to mark one data question or one calculation from your child's last paper and explain where each mark went. Ask whether the school enters students for the practical test or the alternative paper, and whether the tutor has prepared candidates for that specific component. A tutor who answers those three well is worth the mid-band rate. For IB Gram's own arrangements, start with the free trial lesson and the consultation.

Why a science tutor does not need to be in the room, even without a laboratory

The objection families raise about online science tutoring is the laboratory, and it is worth answering directly. A private tutor does not provide laboratory access in any delivery model. A visiting tutor in a Karama flat has no fume cupboard, no data logger and no supply of standard solutions either. The practical component is prepared by the school in its own laboratory, and where the school enters students for the alternative-to-practical paper, the examination itself is written rather than practical.

That reframes the comparison. What science tutoring actually needs is a shared surface where graphs can be drawn and corrected, a way to send a script for marking and get it back annotated, and the ability to work through a past paper question by question with the mark scheme alongside. A tablet and a shared whiteboard do all three better than two people over one exercise book, and the annotated work is retained rather than lost in a margin.

The pool argument applies here as strongly as anywhere. A Karama family hiring someone who can attend is choosing from tutors living nearby and free at the student's hour. For Extended-tier physics on a specific Pearson specification, prepared for the alternative-to-practical paper, that is a narrow requirement and the local pool may contain nobody who meets it. Online changes the constraint from postcode to diary. The in-home band is also higher, at AED 180 to AED 500 against AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online tutor, and in this neighbourhood that premium buys a short drive.

The honest exception is a younger or very distractible student, where someone physically present helps in a way video does not replicate. For a Year 10 or Year 11 candidate working to a fixed series date it rarely decides anything. IB Gram does not offer in-home visits anywhere in the UAE — home tutoring is a service we provide only in India — so where a child genuinely needs a person in the room, we will say so rather than sell an online session as a substitute.

Permits, materials and the limits we work inside

Private tutoring in the UAE is lawful and regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students. Applications go through MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, via the smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals tutoring without a permit face fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so any specific amount quoted is unverified.

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which on the UAE government's own description is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA also requires Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies in all private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, organised in separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, with instructional time calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit and a recommendation that no mandatory-subject lesson runs shorter than twenty-five minutes. For a science tutoring plan this is timetable arithmetic: the free hours in a Year 11 week are fewer than a subject list suggests.

No permit or regulator is an endorsement of anybody. IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific authorisation for training institutes operating premises in Dubai, which we neither hold nor claim. We do not describe tutors as examiners without evidence of current status, and examiner status gives nobody access to marking decisions, boundaries or unseen papers.

On materials and outcomes the limits are firm. We will not supply Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads, because they belong to the boards; a tutor references them, teaches from them in a session and points you at the official source. We will not predict a grade, though a specialist will tell you which of the four mark-loss categories is currently costing most and what looks reachable. And we will not complete any assessed work for a student.

Where we tutor

Where our Karama science students come from

Karama sits in a dense belt of old Dubai neighbourhoods that share schools and school-day timings. These are the areas we work with and the practical details that differ between them for science tutoring specifically.

Al Karama

Apartments and short school runs. The constraint on science tutoring is desk space for a periodic table, a calculator and a graph at the same time, which a shared dining table at 7pm is not.

Oud Metha

The adjacent school cluster, with early finishing times. A 3:30pm slot is genuinely available, which matters for a subject where calculation errors multiply in a tired student.

Al Mankhool

Mixed British and Indian-board families. Science requests here peak after Year 11 mocks, when a co-ordinated sciences grade turns out to have been dragged down by one discipline.

Bur Dubai

Older blocks, larger households and frequent sibling bookings. Two students sitting sciences in the same series work better in staggered short sessions than in one shared slot.

Al Jafiliya

Metro access widens school choice, so we see more variety in entry routes here, including students on Pearson double award alongside neighbours sitting Cambridge separates.

Al Satwa

Dense and low-rise with a short hop to Jumeirah-side schools. Requests lean towards Core-tier accuracy work and the alternative-to-practical paper.

Al Garhoud

Low-rise near the airport and Deira International School. More full-continuum IB students, so MYP sciences requests feature more than in Karama itself.

Al Nahda

On the Sharjah edge of the belt, where cross-border commuting makes weekdays long. Weekend sessions carry more of the plan for these families.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Karama

Schools within the Karama and Oud Metha radius

These schools run Cambridge or Pearson sciences to sixteen, and the entry route differs between them and sometimes between cohorts inside one of them. That is why the first question is which syllabus code is on the entry rather than which school the student attends.

  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Dubai English Speaking School
  • The Indian High School, Oud Metha
  • Pakistan Education Academy
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Jumeira

Where science students from this belt go after Year 11

Post-16 destinations determine whether a reduced-content science route is viable, because each school publishes its own entry requirement. These are the destinations families in this belt most often name.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Deira International School
  • Dubai International Academy, Al Barsha
  • GEMS Wellington Academy, Al Khail

Schools are named as context for the local education market. IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school named, and the students we support attend a wide range of schools across Dubai.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the syllabus codes from the school

Which route, which codes, which tier, which series, and whether the school enters students for the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper. Those five facts shape the whole plan, and families frequently arrive with at least two of them wrong.

  2. 02

    Sit one diagnostic paper

A full past paper from the correct syllabus and tier, marked and split by discipline. The output is a breakdown of marks lost to content, command words, calculation and the practical component, which tells us where the hours should go.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, no card needed

A full session with the matched specialist in a slot that uses the early finish in this belt, at no charge and with no payment details taken beforehand. A written note follows with the diagnostic breakdown and the first six weeks' targets.

  4. 04

    Start with one discipline

We would rather run six weeks deep on the weakest discipline than spread four weeks thinly across three. Habits change with depth, and a second discipline gets added only when the first has moved in marks.

  5. 05

    Measure, then adjust or stop

Raw marks on comparable questions with the discipline split alongside. If the marks are not moving by the midpoint we change the plan or the tutor, and if nobody suitable is free at your hour we say so rather than substitute.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the code, not to 'science'

Separate, co-ordinated, combined and double award are four different examinations across two boards. We match the syllabus code and tier on the entry confirmation, because past papers and mark schemes are only useful if they are the right ones.

Diagnosis split by discipline

A single science grade can be dragged down by one discipline while the other two are fine. We mark a full paper and break it down before allocating any session time, so the hours go where the marks are.

The practical paper taken seriously

Where a school enters students for the alternative-to-practical paper, the examination is written. Variables, apparatus justification and error language are taught skills, bounded and predictable, and they move marks quickly.

Command words drilled early

Describing where the scheme wanted an explanation is the most expensive habit in IGCSE science. Two sessions on real past-paper stems recover marks faster than any content work, so we do it near the start of a block.

Honest about what a short block can do

Technique, calculation discipline and the practical paper respond quickly. Teaching a discipline from scratch in six weeks does not. We say which case we think yours is after the diagnostic, not before.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Karama: your questions answered

How do I find out which IGCSE science route my child is on?+

Ask the school for the entry confirmation with syllabus codes, not for a subject list. Cambridge separate sciences are 0610 biology, 0620 chemistry and 0625 physics; co-ordinated sciences is 0654 and combined science 0653. Pearson separate sciences are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, with a double award option. Also ask for the tier and whether the school enters students for the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper. Those details decide which past papers are useful, and revision material bought for the wrong route is money spent on confusion.

Co-ordinated Sciences versus separate sciences: which one is my Karama child taking?+

Co-ordinated sciences, Cambridge 0654, covers all three disciplines in one qualification worth a single grade, at roughly two thirds of the separate-science content, and occupies two option slots. Separate sciences give three grades from three syllabuses and occupy three slots with considerably more content. Co-ordinated remains acceptable for many post-16 science routes, but the receiving school's own published entry requirement decides that rather than any general rule, so ask the destination directly before treating it as equivalent.

My child is strong in biology and weak in physics. Does that matter on one grade?+

A great deal, and it is the specific risk of the single-grade routes. With one grade covering all three disciplines, the weakest discipline pulls the whole result down, and schools report by discipline rarely enough that this sometimes first appears in a mock result. Ask for discipline-level marks from the last internal assessment rather than an overall science grade. Tutoring should then be weighted towards the weak discipline in proportion to the marks actually being lost, not split evenly across three subjects.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper and how is it revised?+

It is a written examination about experiments, used where a school chooses it instead of a practical test. It asks about independent, dependent and control variables, apparatus choice and the precision it offers, sources of error as distinct from mistakes, and how to describe a method another person could repeat. Laboratory confidence is not what is tested; precise written description is, which is why students who enjoy practical work sometimes score poorly. It is a bounded body of technique with predictable question styles and it responds quickly to focused practice.

Which command word costs IGCSE science students the most marks?+

Explain, because students answer it as though it said describe. A fluent paragraph about what a graph does earns nothing when every mark on offer was for why it does it. Suggest is a close second: students leave it blank because the answer was not in their notes, when the question rewards reasoning from the information given. Comparisons lose half their marks when only one side is given. Drilling twenty real past-paper stems for the command word, without doing the science, moves marks faster than content revision.

Why does my child lose marks in chemistry calculations they say they understand?+

Usually one of five specific habits. Taking a ratio from an equation that was not balanced. Calculating moles correctly then applying them to the wrong species. Omitting state symbols. Carrying significant figures wrongly from a titration. Leaving the unit off a concentration. Each of those is a habit rather than a knowledge gap, and each is found by marking the student's own script against the published scheme rather than by revising the topic. Rebuilding mole reasoning from limiting-reagent problems, rather than from a memorised formula, fixes most of them.

Is physics actually a maths problem for most IGCSE students?+

For a large share of lost marks, yes. Rearranging an equation where the subject is not already isolated, converting between prefixes, reading a gradient from a best-fit line rather than two adjacent points, and stating a unit with every answer are mathematics skills marked inside a physics paper. Students who relied on a formula triangle in Year 9 hit this in Year 11, and it presents as weakness in physics. Twenty equations rearranged for every variable, drilled over two or three sessions, removes most of the friction.

Should we hire one tutor for all three sciences or one at a time?+

Start with one, chosen from marked evidence. Six weeks deep on the weakest discipline usually moves more marks than four weeks spread thinly across three, because the failures are discipline-specific habits and habits only change with depth. It is also cheaper: three disciplines at once simply triples the hourly figure, and nothing about that arithmetic is a discount. Add a second discipline when the first has moved in raw marks, and treat all-three triage as a decision for a co-ordinated candidate with a genuinely even spread of weakness.

Which IGCSE science series will my child in Karama sit?+

June or November. Cambridge runs a June series and a November series for international candidates and allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, with the zone deciding which version of the timetable applies; Cambridge states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone's timetable. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is available in May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026. The February series some providers mention is offered to India only.

When do IGCSE science results arrive and is a resit worth planning early?+

Plan it before the result arrives. Pearson's June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. The window between a result and the next entry deadline is short, so a resit decision made after results has already lost time. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series and revises them, so confirm every date against the board's live official timetable rather than a copy saved from a previous year.

What does IGCSE science tutoring cost in Dubai per hour?+

Published rates divide by tier rather than by neighbourhood. Budget online tutoring is advertised from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, with EdFlik at AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. Qualified subject tutors online are quoted at AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, TutorChase listing AED 270. In-home work sits at AED 180 to AED 500 because travel is priced in. Those are other providers' published figures.

Can online science tutoring work without a laboratory?+

Yes, because no private tutor provides laboratory access in any delivery model. A visiting tutor in a Karama flat has no fume cupboard or data logger either. Practical work belongs to the school, and where the school enters students for the alternative-to-practical paper the examination itself is written. What tutoring needs is a shared surface for graphs, annotated script marking between sessions and the ability to work through a past paper with the scheme alongside, all of which online delivery does well and retains afterwards.

Is it too late to start science tutoring eight weeks before the papers?+

No, with the plan built backwards from the examination. Week one is a full past paper from the correct syllabus and tier, marked and split by discipline, giving a breakdown of marks lost to content, command words, calculation and the practical component. Weeks two to five address those in order of marks available; weeks six to eight are full timed papers with review focused only on marks lost. What eight weeks cannot do is teach a discipline from scratch, so the realistic target is recovering accessible marks rather than moving the ceiling.

Does our tutor need a MoHRE permit for private science lessons?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Applications go through MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service. Ask any tutor directly whether they hold it. Tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, although no fine schedule has been published.

Will you send us past papers and mark schemes to work from?+

No, and nor should anyone. Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the boards, and distributing them as downloads is someone else's copyright handed to you. A tutor references them, works from them inside a session and points you at the official source so you can obtain them properly. We also will not predict a grade, though a specialist will tell you which mark-loss category is currently costing most, and we will not complete any assessed work for a student.

Start with the syllabus code and one marked paper

Ask the school for the entry confirmation with codes, the tier, the series, and whether your child sits the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper. Send us that and one recent science paper with the marks on it. A specialist in that exact syllabus marks it, splits the lost marks by discipline, and teaches a free trial lesson in an afternoon slot this belt can genuinely use, with no card required to book. A written note follows setting out where the hours should go. Lessons run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.
