IB & IGCSE in Al Satwa

Is there anyone who actually knows this syllabus?

That is the real question behind the search, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. Diploma physics is a narrow specialism. The population of people in Dubai who can teach it well is much smaller than the population of people who will accept a booking for it, and the gap between those two groups is where families lose a term. A parent in Al Satwa has no obvious way to tell them apart from a profile page, because every profile says the same words.

So this page hands you the test instead. There are six questions that reliably separate someone who teaches Diploma physics from someone who teaches science and has read the subject guide. They take four minutes to ask, they can be asked in a free trial lesson, and you do not need to know physics yourself to judge the answers — you only need to know what a real answer sounds like, which is what the table further down gives you.

Why it matters so much in this subject: physics at Diploma level is three different competences wearing one name. There is the physics itself — fields, momentum, thermodynamics, quantum ideas. There is the mathematics inside the physics, which is where most capable students actually fail, because they understand the concept and cannot execute the algebra under time pressure. And there is the experimental half: uncertainties, graph linearisation, the language of a method, the scientific investigation that carries a fifth of the grade. A tutor strong in one and weak in the other two will produce a student who sounds knowledgeable and scores a 4.

The second thing a Satwa family needs to know is that the optional and higher-level content differs by school. Schools make choices about what they teach and in what order, and a tutor who is working from a generic course plan rather than from your child's school's sequence will spend February teaching something the class covered in October. Asking which topics the school has already covered, and in what order, is a legitimate first-session question — and a tutor who does not ask it is telling you something.

Al Satwa itself has almost no private schools inside it. Children here travel to Al Safa, Jumeirah, Oud Metha, Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim, and only a subset of those schools runs the IB Diploma at all, since the International Baccalaureate accounts for roughly 7% of Dubai's private school enrolment against 37% on the UK curriculum. That makes the local pool of Diploma physics specialists thinner still, and it is the practical reason online delivery matters here rather than a marketing reason.

Lessons from IB Gram are one-to-one and delivered live online to Al Satwa on Gulf Standard Time, with the first one free so the verification costs you nothing. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. The trade is explicit — no person in the room, and a tutor selected for the subject and level rather than for who lives within a twenty-minute drive of Satwa.

  • Six questions in this page will test any tutor's claim to know Diploma physics
  • The internal assessment carries 20% of the physics grade at both levels
  • Ask which optional and higher-level topics your child's school has covered, and when
  • Examiner status means nothing unless it can be evidenced, and grants no access to marking
  • Dubai's IB cohort is about 7% of private enrolment, so specialist pools are thin
  • Three of the seven new schools in Dubai's 2026-27 intake are International Baccalaureate
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics does not begin at Diploma level, and a verification conversation is different at each stage. Below is what a tutor should be able to speak about precisely for each programme a Satwa family might be dealing with.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme Sciences

Assessed against criteria rather than by examination, with the sciences marked on knowledge and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. A tutor who can name those criteria and describe what distinguishes a top band from a middle one is working from the actual assessment; one who talks about topics alone is not.

MYP students in this district typically travel to Al Safa, Umm Suqeim or Al Barsha. The jump from MYP sciences into Diploma physics is where most of the difficulty appears, because criterion-based marking rewards process while the Diploma rewards precision under timed conditions.

DP SLAges 16-19 · DP1-DP2

IB Diploma Physics, Standard Level

Two years to the May session, assessed by written papers plus an internal assessment worth 20% of the grade. Standard Level covers the common core without the higher-level extensions. The frequent misdiagnosis here is treating a mathematics problem as a physics problem; many SL students who stall are stalling on algebra and unit handling.

Confirm every IB date with your child's IB coordinator or on ibo.org. No IB session or results date is published on this page, because none has been confirmed from the IB itself for this project.

DP HLAges 16-19 · DP1-DP2

IB Diploma Physics, Higher Level

The same core plus substantial additional higher-level content and a further written paper. Higher Level is where the mathematics becomes genuinely demanding and where a tutor's depth is tested rather than their breadth. A specialist should be able to tell you, without looking it up, which parts of the course exist only at Higher Level.

Higher Level physics is a common prerequisite for engineering and physical-science degrees. For UAE university routes, Ministry of Education equivalency should be checked on the authority's own page; no IB points threshold is published here because none has been read on a Ministry of Education source.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE Physics

The usual route into Diploma physics in this part of Dubai, taken as Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1. Cambridge includes an alternative-to-practical paper for candidates not sitting a laboratory exam, and answering it well is a taught skill rather than a by-product of knowing the physics.

Students arriving at Diploma physics from the Extended tier of 0625 are generally better prepared than those arriving from Core, and the gap shows first in algebraic confidence rather than in content knowledge. A single diagnostic session at the start of DP1 is worth more than a term of remediation in DP2.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A verification conversation needs something concrete to be about. These are the areas of Diploma physics where a specialist's depth either shows or does not, written as the thing a tutor should be able to discuss without preparation.

Kinematics and dynamics

SL and HL

The part students assume they already know from IGCSE and then lose marks on. The difficulty is not the equations; it is resolving forces correctly on an inclined plane and keeping sign conventions consistent through a multi-stage problem. A tutor should be able to name the two or three places candidates habitually drop a negative.

Momentum, impulse and collisions

SL and HL

Conservation arguments are easy to state and hard to apply when a graph of force against time replaces a number. Impulse as the area under a curve is a standard examinable step that students meet unprepared because it sits across physics and graph-reading.

Circular motion and gravitation

SL and HL

Orbital problems combine two equations and one piece of algebra, and that algebra is where most of the loss occurs. Candidates who can state the condition for a circular orbit still fail to derive a period, because the rearrangement was never practised separately.

Thermal physics and the gas laws

SL and HL

Specific heat capacity, latent heat and the ideal gas relationships. Marks go missing in unit conversion — kelvin against celsius, grams against kilograms — far more often than in concept. A tutor who drills the conversions explicitly is addressing the actual failure mode.

Waves, interference and standing waves

SL and HL

Path difference and phase arguments require a diagram drawn correctly before any calculation. Students who go straight to a formula get the arithmetic right and the physics wrong. Standing waves on strings and in pipes reward a disciplined approach to boundary conditions.

Fields: gravitational, electric and magnetic

SL and HL

The conceptual heart of the course and the place where Higher Level separates from Standard. Potential against field strength, and the sign conventions that follow, are routinely confused. This is the single best topic on which to test a tutor's depth in a trial lesson.

Electricity and circuits

SL and HL

Internal resistance, potential dividers and the behaviour of real cells. Candidates lose marks explaining why a reading changes when a component is altered, because the explanation requires a chain of reasoning rather than a calculation.

Atomic, nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL

Decay, binding energy and the photoelectric effect. Students handle the ideas and lose marks on the orders of magnitude and the unit prefixes. Working in electronvolts and converting correctly is a drill, and it is one of the fastest marks to recover.

Uncertainties, errors and graph work

SL and HL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty; propagating them through a calculation; linearising a relationship to produce a straight-line graph; and reading a gradient with its uncertainty. This is examinable, teachable, and the area where general science tutors are weakest.

The scientific investigation

SL and HL

The internally assessed report, worth 20% of the grade at both levels. A tutor may teach the method, explain the assessment criteria in the IB's own words, discuss whether a research question is answerable, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write, complete or rewrite any part of it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy Diploma physics support, distinguished by what the diagnosis says rather than by convenience. Verification should happen before any of them is chosen, which is why the trial lesson comes first.

Verification trial, then weekly one-to-one

The standard route. A free first lesson used to ask the six questions on this page and to put one real problem in front of the tutor, followed by a fixed weekly hour if the answers hold up. For a Satwa family the slot depends on the school run — 17:15 for the Al Safa cluster, 18:00 for Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim.

  • Verification questions asked and answered in the free hour
  • One real past-paper question worked through live
  • Written note after each session naming what was covered
  • Slot set against the latest realistic school return

Uncertainty and graph-work block

A short, separate run of sessions on the experimental half of the course: absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation, linearisation and reading a gradient with its uncertainty. This is the most reliably neglected part of Diploma physics and the one where general science tutors are weakest, so it is worth buying as its own block rather than hoping it gets covered.

  • Four to six sessions, self-contained
  • Directly useful for both written papers and the investigation
  • Taught as technique, drilled on real data
  • Diagnoses whether the problem is physics or arithmetic

Investigation process coaching

Support around the internally assessed scientific investigation, which carries 20% of the grade. The tutor explains the criteria in the IB's own words, discusses whether a research question is answerable with the equipment available, models an analysis on different data, and gives feedback on the student's own draft. Nothing is written for the student.

  • Criteria explained from the official guide, not paraphrased loosely
  • Research question tested for answerability before work starts
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, in writing
  • No drafting, rewriting or editing to completion, ever

Mandatory UAE subject support alongside physics

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies run in all Dubai private schools alongside the licensed curriculum, and they compete with physics for the same evening. KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, and for these subjects the use of different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is prohibited.

  • Taught to the school's own stream and materials
  • A shorter session, on a different evening from physics
  • Does not count towards the equivalency five subjects
  • Planned into the week rather than squeezed around it

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Satwa

01

Six questions that separate a physics teacher from a science tutor

Ask these six questions in the free trial lesson. You do not need to know physics to judge the answers; the table gives you what a real answer sounds like and what a weak one sounds like. Four minutes of this will tell you more than any profile page, any review count and any claim about years of experience.

The reason they work is that each one requires knowledge that cannot be acquired by skimming a subject guide. Which content exists only at Higher Level, how the internal assessment criteria are actually worded, what percentage uncertainty does when two quantities are multiplied, which optional topic a school has chosen — these are things a person knows from having taught the course through a full cycle, or does not know at all. Vague confidence is the tell.

The sixth question is the one most parents never think to ask: what has my child's school already covered, and in what order? A tutor who does not want to know this will teach a generic sequence and will eventually spend a session on something the class did two months ago. A tutor who asks it before you do has told you they have worked with Dubai schools and understands that the sequencing varies.

One further note. A tutor may answer a question with an honest 'I would need to check the current guide' and still be excellent, because subject guides are revised and nobody should be confidently quoting a version from three years ago. The distinction to watch for is between somebody who knows where to check and somebody who does not know that there is something to check.

02

How Diploma physics is actually assessed

Diploma physics is assessed by written papers plus an internal assessment carrying 20% of the grade at both Standard and Higher Level. Higher Level candidates sit an additional written paper and additional content. The exact component weightings should be confirmed against the current subject guide through your child's IB coordinator, because guides are revised and a stale figure quoted confidently is worse than one checked.

What matters for tutoring is the shape rather than the decimal places. A fifth of the grade is earned before the exam period in a piece of coursework the student produces themselves, which means a fifth of the grade is available to a well-organised student regardless of exam-day nerves. Families who treat the investigation as an administrative chore rather than as a graded component are leaving the most controllable marks on the table.

The written papers split broadly into short-answer and data-analysis work on one side and extended problem-solving on the other. The data-analysis element is why uncertainties and graph work are not an optional extra: they appear in the papers directly and they underpin the investigation as well. A tutor who treats them as a side topic has misread where the marks are.

On dates: UAE schools sit the May session, and this page publishes no specific IB exam or results date because none has been confirmed from the IB itself for this project. Secondary sources circulate windows that do not always agree. Confirm every date with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org before planning around it.

The three ways capable physics students actually fail

  • Mathematical execution: right physics, lost in the algebra
  • Explanation: the conclusion written without the chain of reasoning
  • Experimental technique: uncertainty, linearisation and method language
  • Ask the tutor which of the three it is, and what the evidence was

A student losing marks in Diploma physics is usually failing in one of three distinct ways, and the remedies are different enough that misdiagnosis wastes a term. The first is mathematical execution. The student understands the physics, states the right relationship, and then loses the question in the algebra — a rearrangement with the unknown in a denominator, a square root taken too early, a sign dropped on an inclined plane. This is the most common failure among students who sound knowledgeable in conversation.

The second is explanation. Physics marks are often awarded for a chain of reasoning: this increases, therefore this decreases, therefore the reading falls. Students who know the answer write the conclusion and skip the chain, and the mark scheme awards the chain. This shows up most in circuits, in thermal physics and in anything involving a changing field. It is a writing problem with a physics subject, and it responds to being shown two or three model answers and then being made to produce the structure repeatedly.

The third is the experimental half. Uncertainties, propagation, linearisation, reading a gradient and stating it with its uncertainty, and the precise language of a method. This is examinable in the written papers and it underpins the internally assessed investigation, so weakness here costs twice. It is also the area where a general science tutor is least likely to be strong, because it is a technique set rather than a body of knowledge.

A good trial lesson should tell you which of the three your child is in. Ask the tutor at the end: which of those three is the problem here, and what is the evidence? A tutor who answers with a specific observation from the hour — the student set up the physics correctly and lost it rearranging, or wrote the right conclusion with no reasoning — has diagnosed. A tutor who says the student needs to practise more has not.

04

Uncertainties and graph work: the half nobody tutors

If a family buys only one block of physics support, this is often the one that moves the most marks, and it is the block almost nobody sells. Uncertainty handling appears directly in the data-analysis paper and it underpins the internally assessed investigation, so a student who is weak here loses marks in two places. It is also entirely teachable as technique, which means it improves quickly once addressed.

The content of the block is small and specific. Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, and the difference between them. What happens to uncertainty when quantities are added, multiplied, divided or raised to a power. How to choose what to plot so that a relationship becomes a straight line, which is the single most useful analytical move in the whole course. How to draw a line of best fit with maximum and minimum gradients and state the gradient with its uncertainty. How to say, in the mark scheme's language, why a result is or is not consistent with a theoretical value.

Most students arrive at Diploma physics having met none of this properly. IGCSE physics touches error and anomaly but not propagation, and a school's Diploma teaching has to cover a large syllabus in two years, so this part tends to be delivered once and assumed. The consequence is predictable: strong students who can solve a dynamics problem and cannot say whether their own experimental result agrees with the prediction.

Four to six focused sessions will usually complete the set. It is self-contained, which makes it the easiest physics support to buy honestly — the outcome is checkable, because the student either can or cannot propagate an uncertainty through a three-step calculation by the end of it.

05

The scientific investigation, and the line a tutor does not cross

  • Criteria explained from the official guide, in the IB's own words
  • Research question tested for answerability before data collection
  • Analysis technique modelled on different data, never on the student's own
  • Written feedback on a draft the student wrote, and nothing more

The investigation is worth 20% of the physics grade and it is the student's own work. That second sentence is not a disclaimer; it is the whole structure of the thing. IB academic-honesty rules make submitted work that is not the candidate's own a malpractice matter, and the consequence lands on the student rather than on whoever helped. One operator visible in this market sells completed Internal Assessments. A Satwa family should treat that as a reason to walk away rather than as a convenience.

Here is what a tutor may legitimately do. Explain the assessment criteria in the IB's own words. Discuss whether a proposed research question is actually answerable with the equipment the school has, which is where most weak investigations are lost before any data is collected. Model an analysis technique on a completely different dataset. Teach uncertainty propagation and linearisation as technique. Read a draft the student has written and say where the reasoning does not follow, where the uncertainty treatment is thin, and where the conclusion claims more than the data supports.

Here is what a tutor may not do: write any part of it, rewrite any part of it, edit it to completion, supply a research question to be adopted wholesale, or produce the analysis. The distinction is between teaching a student to do the work and doing the work. A tutor who offers the second is offering to put your child at risk.

Nor should anyone supply you with board materials. Subject guides, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, and the correct behaviour is to reference and link the official source rather than host copies. If a provider offers you a folder of IB documents, that tells you how they handle rules generally.

06

What verified physics support costs in this market

Three of the six most visible tutoring sites in Dubai publish no price, and the two that do quote US dollars. Here are the AED market bands with the providers who published them, as of October 2026. Budget online tutoring runs roughly AED 33 to 150 an hour, with Tutopiya from about AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. A qualified subject tutor online sits between AED 150 and 300, Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. Specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase listing AED 270. In-home one-to-one is quoted at AED 180 to 500 including travel, Bestimate putting the usual range at AED 180 to 350. The premium named tier starts around AED 500, with BartyED at AED 650.

Diploma physics sits at the upper end of that structure for a straightforward reason: the pool of people who can teach it well is small, and small pools price higher. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session are AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support, which is the realistic band for Higher Level physics in DP2. Market packages include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, though eight sessions at that price is unlikely to be specialist cover.

What the verification questions do is tell you whether you are paying the specialist rate for specialist teaching. That is the actual financial risk in this subject — not overpaying in absolute terms, but paying AED 270 an hour for somebody who knows the topics and cannot teach uncertainty propagation. The questions cost nothing and they can be asked in a free lesson, which makes them the cheapest due diligence available.

A note about the top of the market. Premium rates are sometimes justified by describing a tutor as an examiner. Examiner status means nothing unless it can be evidenced, and it grants no access to marking, grade boundaries or unreleased paper content. Nobody should be implying otherwise, and a family paying at that level should be able to see what the premium buys in teaching terms.

Permits, examiner claims and what a parent can check

Verification has a regulatory half as well as an academic one, and it is cheap to do. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students.

MoHRE's service page is 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', which lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount appears here, and a site quoting one should be read carefully.

The regulator question is separate. In Dubai, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate; in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain it is ADEK; in Sharjah the Sharjah Private Education Authority; in Ras Al Khaimah the Department of Knowledge; and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. KHDA inspects schools. It does not accredit individual tutors, and 'KHDA-approved physics tutor' is not a real credential. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge accreditation, claims none, and has no UAE office.

One more thing a Satwa parent should know. ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar Abu Dhabi school staff from paid private tutoring of students at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. So an arrangement with your child's own physics teacher, privately, is not something to pursue — treat that as press-reported and check the current policy document before relying on the exact wording.

If nobody covers the level or topic you need

This is the disclosure no competitor in this market makes, and it is the one a Satwa family most needs. Specialist physics cover is not uniform. Higher Level is thinner than Standard Level. The extension content is thinner than the core. A specific optional topic combined with a specific weekday slot can be thinner still. Pretending otherwise is how a family ends up with a biology graduate teaching Higher Level fields.

The honest options, in order of preference, are these. Wait a short time for the right specialist, which is usually a matter of weeks rather than months and is almost always better than starting with the wrong person. Move the weekly slot, because a different hour opens a different pool and an 18:30 Thursday is not the same market as a 17:00 Monday. Or take a tutor outside the UAE working on Gulf Standard Time for the same subject and level, which is how online delivery turns a thin local pool into a workable one.

What should not happen is substitution without disclosure. A general science tutor taking a Higher Level physics student because the calendar had a gap is the single most common quiet failure in this market, and it is invisible for about six weeks — long enough for a term to be lost. The verification questions in the first section of this page exist precisely to catch it, and they work whether the tutor comes from here or from anywhere else.

Two final things nobody should be telling you. No tutor can promise a grade, a number of points or an improvement in an externally assessed examination, and a provider claiming it is describing their marketing. And tutoring is not required for Ministry of Education equivalency, for university admission, or for school progression. Any suggestion otherwise is manufactured urgency about a regulatory process.

Making an online physics lesson work from a Satwa apartment

Physics over video works when the writing is visible, and fails when it is not. The subject is conducted in diagrams, derivations and graphs, so a session where the tutor talks and the student listens is a session where nobody can see the sign error. The setup that works is a shared whiteboard the student writes on, or a second camera or phone angled at paper, so that working appears in real time and can be annotated.

In the housing stock typical of Al Satwa — apartments, shared rooms, family life happening in the next room — a few practical choices make a large difference. A wired connection or a position near the router, because a dropped frame during a derivation costs the thread. Headphones, so the room's noise stops mattering. A surface large enough for A4 paper and a calculator, which sounds trivial and is the most common reason a student works on their lap and writes nothing down. And a fixed place, so the setup is not rebuilt every week.

There is an advantage to this format that is specific to physics rather than general. Every annotated derivation and every marked graph is capturable, so the student finishes the year with a growing record of their own corrected work rather than with a memory of a conversation. For a subject where the same algebraic slip recurs across different topics, being able to look back at the last four times it happened is genuinely useful.

Practical work remains the school's to deliver, and nobody should suggest otherwise. What a tutor can do is prepare a student for the laboratory — the method language, the control of variables, the uncertainty estimate before the data is collected — and then work with the data the student actually gathered. That division is honest and it is also where most of the assessed marks sit.

Where we tutor

Where Al Satwa students actually study the Diploma

The IB is the smaller stream in Dubai, so a Satwa family's choice of Diploma school is a choice between a handful of districts rather than a long list. Each entry below is written from the point of view of availability: what runs there, and what that means for finding a physics specialist.

Al Safa

Holds Diploma provision within a short crossing of Sheikh Zayed Road from Satwa, which makes it the most common IB choice for families in this district. Physics cohorts here are small, so a school's own subject support is stretched.

Jumeirah

A mix of British-curriculum and international provision along the coast, with Diploma physics running at some schools and not others. Worth confirming directly rather than assuming from the school's international branding.

Umm Suqeim

Several of the larger IB schools sit here, which is why Satwa families accept the long commute for the Diploma. The trade is a longer afternoon return and a 18:00 realistic lesson start.

Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

The densest concentration of Diploma physics cohorts within reach of Satwa. Also the commute that most reliably pushes a weekday lesson into the evening.

Oud Metha and Al Garhoud

Mostly British and Indian curriculum provision with Diploma available at a small number of schools. The nearest cluster geographically and the thinnest for IB physics specifically.

Al Mankhool and Bur Dubai

Short commute, limited Diploma provision. Families here who want Higher Level physics usually end up travelling further than their postcode suggests.

Al Wasl and Al Bada'a

Immediately adjacent to Satwa with the same housing stock and commute. No secondary Diploma provision inside either, so planning is identical to Satwa itself.

Dubai Festival City and Al Garhoud

Across the creek, taken by a smaller number of Satwa families. Creek crossings make the afternoon return the least predictable of the district's options.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Satwa

Al Safa, Jumeirah and Al Wasl

The nearest cluster with International Baccalaureate provision to Al Satwa, and the one where a weekday evening lesson is most practical. Physics cohorts in individual schools here are small, which means a student with a specific gap often cannot get it addressed inside the school day.

  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Jumeira
  • Safa British School, Al Safa
  • Jumeirah College, Al Safa

Umm Suqeim, Al Sufouh and Al Barsha

Where most Satwa Diploma students actually travel. Larger cohorts, more subject choice, and the longest afternoon return in the district — which is why families on this run should plan an 18:00 physics slot from the start.

  • Raffles World Academy, Umm Suqeim
  • GEMS Wellington International School, Al Sufouh
  • Dubai American Academy, Al Barsha
  • Dubai International Academy, Al Barsha
  • Kings' School Dubai, Umm Suqeim

Oud Metha, Al Garhoud and Bur Dubai

The closest secondary cluster to Satwa, strong on British and Indian curricula and thin on Diploma physics. Listed because many families start here and then discover the Higher Level option they want is not available locally.

  • St Mary's Catholic High School, Oud Metha
  • Deira International School, Al Garhoud
  • Dubai Scholars Private School, Al Garhoud
  • GEMS Winchester School, Oud Metha
  • Ambassador School, Al Mankhool

Schools appear here as local context for families searching from this district; IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and the school's sequence

School, year group, Standard or Higher Level, and if you can get it, the last three topics the class covered plus the next assessment date. The school office or the subject teacher will supply the sequence. It is what stops a tutor teaching in February something the class finished in October.

  2. 02

Use the free lesson to run the verification questions

Ask all six from the first table and put one real past-paper question in front of the tutor. The lesson costs nothing, which is exactly why this is the right use of it. You are buying information about the tutor, not an hour of teaching.

  3. 03

Ask for the diagnosis in three words

At the end, ask which of the three failure modes applies — mathematical execution, explanation, or experimental technique — and what the evidence from the hour was. A specific answer is a diagnosis. 'Needs more practice' is not, and you have spent nothing to learn that.

  4. 04

Set a slot against the real school return

From Al Satwa that means roughly 17:15 for the Al Safa and Jumeirah clusters and 18:00 for Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim. Choose against the latest arrival you have actually seen in the past fortnight, and agree in advance what happens when the bus runs late.

  5. 05

    Buy the uncertainty block separately

Four to six self-contained sessions on uncertainty, propagation, linearisation and gradient work. It is the most neglected part of the course, it pays into both the written papers and the investigation, and the outcome is checkable at the end of it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

You get the test, not a reassurance

Six verification questions, the strong answers and the weak ones, published on the page. You can ask them of any tutor anywhere, including this one, and they cost nothing to ask inside a free lesson.

Matched by level and by the school's sequence

Standard Level, Higher Level and the extension content are different teaching jobs, and Dubai schools sequence the course differently. The match uses the level and the school's own order of topics rather than the phrase IB Physics.

The experimental half is taught, not assumed

Uncertainty, propagation, linearisation and gradient uncertainty as an explicit technique block. It appears in the written papers and it underpins the investigation, and it is where general science tutors are weakest.

Investigation help stays on the right side of IB rules

Criteria explained in the IB's own words, research questions tested for answerability, analysis modelled on other data, written feedback on the student's own draft. No drafting, rewriting or editing to completion.

Coverage limits are disclosed

Higher Level and specific extension topics are thinner pools than Standard Level core. If the right specialist is not free in the hour you want, you are told, and given the honest options rather than a substitute.

No claimed approvals and no promised grades

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge accreditation and claims none. Nobody here will tell you a grade is assured, and no IB exam date is published that has not been confirmed from the IB.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Satwa: your questions answered

How can I tell whether a tutor really knows Diploma physics or just says so?+

Ask six things in the free trial lesson. Which parts of the course exist only at Higher Level. How the internal assessment criteria are worded. What happens to uncertainty when two measured quantities are multiplied. What weighting the internal assessment carries. Which optional or extension topic your child's school teaches. And what the class has covered so far, in what order. A specialist answers the first four without hesitating, asks you the fifth and sixth, and says honestly when they want to check the current guide. Vague confidence on all six is the tell, and it takes four minutes to find.

Is Higher Level physics a different teaching job from Standard Level?+

Yes, and treating them as the same thing is a common and expensive mistake. Higher Level carries substantial additional content and an extra written paper, and the mathematics becomes genuinely demanding rather than merely fiddly. A tutor comfortable with the Standard Level core may be out of their depth on the extension material, and that will not be visible for several weeks. Ask specifically which content exists only at Higher Level; a specialist names it immediately, and somebody working from a skim of the subject guide talks about depth in general terms.

My son understands the physics and still gets 4s. What is going wrong?+

Almost always one of two things. Either he is losing questions in the algebra — a rearrangement with the unknown in a denominator, a dropped sign on an inclined plane, a square root taken a step too early — or he is writing conclusions without the chain of reasoning the mark scheme awards. Both are invisible in conversation, because a student who can explain a concept out loud sounds secure. Both are also fast to fix once named. Ask a tutor at the end of a trial lesson which of the two it is and what the evidence from that hour was.

Why does everyone skip uncertainties, and does it actually cost marks?+

It costs marks twice, which is why it matters. Uncertainty handling appears directly in the data-analysis paper and it underpins the internally assessed investigation worth 20% of the grade. It gets skipped because it is technique rather than content: a school with a large syllabus and two years delivers it once and assumes it. Most students arrive from IGCSE having met anomalies and error but never propagation or linearisation. Four to six focused sessions usually complete the whole set, and the result is checkable — either the student can propagate through a three-step calculation or cannot.

What does linearising a relationship mean and why do tutors go on about it?+

It means choosing what to plot so that a curved relationship becomes a straight line, which turns a hard analysis into a gradient and an intercept. It is the single most useful analytical move in Diploma physics, it appears in the data-analysis paper, and it is usually what separates a strong investigation from a middling one. Students who have not been taught it plot the raw quantities, get a curve, and then have nothing to say about it. It is a short topic with a disproportionate return, and it is squarely in the technique block rather than in the content.

Where does academic honesty draw the line on scientific investigation support?+

The limits are clear once they are written down. A tutor may explain the assessment criteria in the IB's own words, discuss whether a research question is answerable with the equipment the school has, model an analysis technique on a completely different dataset, teach uncertainty propagation, and give written feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write, rewrite, edit to completion, supply a research question to be adopted wholesale, or produce the analysis. Submitted work that is not the candidate's own is a malpractice matter and the consequence falls on the student.

Which part of the investigation goes wrong most often?+

The research question, chosen before any data exists. A question that cannot be answered with the equipment available, or that has no measurable independent variable, or that produces three data points, has already capped the grade before the student walks into the laboratory. That is the cheapest thing in the whole component to get right and the thing least often discussed. A single session testing the question for answerability, before data collection begins, is worth more than several sessions tidying up an analysis built on unusable measurements.

Does an IB physics tutor need to be a current examiner?+

No, and the claim should be treated carefully. Examiner status is only meaningful if it can be evidenced, and it confers no access to marking, grade boundaries or unreleased paper content. Nobody should be implying it does. What actually predicts good teaching is depth in the course and the ability to diagnose: naming the extension content, knowing the criteria, teaching uncertainty propagation, and identifying from one hour of work whether a student's problem is algebraic, explanatory or experimental. Ask for that instead, because it can be demonstrated in front of you.

How much should we expect to pay for Higher Level physics support in Dubai?+

Market figures as of October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200, and specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase listing AED 270. Bestimate's monthly estimate for specialist exam-year support at one hour weekly is AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above. Higher Level physics sits at the upper end because the pool of people who teach it well is small. Those figures belong to the providers named; here the first lesson is free, so verification costs nothing before anything is priced.

Does IB Gram send a physics tutor to a home in Al Satwa?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. Sessions for Satwa families are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared whiteboard so derivations and graphs are visible and annotated as they are written. The honest trade-off is that you lose a person in the room and gain a tutor chosen for the level and extension content rather than for who is willing to drive into Satwa at five in the afternoon. In a subject with a pool this thin, that trade is usually worth making.

How do I make an online physics lesson work in a Satwa apartment?+

Three things carry most of it. A fixed place with a surface big enough for A4 paper and a calculator, because a student working on their lap writes nothing down and writing is the whole subject. Headphones, so household noise stops mattering. And either a shared whiteboard the student writes on or a phone angled at the paper, so the tutor sees the working rather than hearing a description of it. A wired connection or a seat near the router helps, because a dropped frame in the middle of a derivation costs the thread.

What time can a physics session start if my child travels to Al Barsha?+

Plan 18:00 and you will keep the slot. Al Satwa has almost no secondary schools inside it, and the Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim runs commonly put a child through the door after 16:30, sometimes after 17:00 on a bad day. A lesson set at 17:00 for that commute slips fifteen minutes one week and half an hour the next, and is abandoned by the third month. For the Al Safa and Jumeirah clusters, 17:15 is realistic. Set it against the latest arrival you have actually seen.

Do private physics tutors in Dubai need a permit, and can I see it?+

Yes, and you can ask. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and the private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. It costs a family nothing. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so disregard any amount quoted to you.

Should I look for a KHDA-approved physics tutor?+

There is no such thing, and the phrase should make you cautious about whoever used it. KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai: it inspects schools and issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises. It does not accredit individual private tutors. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge accreditation, claims none, and has no UAE office. The credential that does exist for an individual is the MoHRE private tuition work permit, and you can ask to see it.

When are the IB physics exams, and why will nobody tell me a date?+

UAE schools sit the May session, and this page deliberately publishes no specific IB exam or results date. The reason is that none has been confirmed from the IB itself for this project — ibo.org blocks automated checking, and secondary sources circulate windows that do not always agree. A date a parent plans around is a date worth getting from the source, so confirm it with your child's IB coordinator or on ibo.org. Any site stating an IB session date confidently without naming where it read it is guessing in public.

What if no Higher Level physics specialist is free when we need one?+

You get told, and you get the honest options. Higher Level is a thinner pool than Standard Level, the extension content thinner again, and a specific topic combined with a fixed weekday hour is the thinnest combination of all. The choices are a short wait, which is usually weeks rather than months and almost always better than the wrong person; a different weekly slot, because a different hour is a different market; or a specialist outside the UAE working on Gulf Standard Time. What should not happen is a general science tutor taking the booking because the calendar had a gap.

Ask the six questions before you pay anybody

The hardest part of finding Diploma physics support in Al Satwa is not price and it is not scheduling. It is telling a specialist apart from somebody who has read the subject guide, because both profiles say the same words. The six questions in the first section of this page are the test, they take four minutes, and they can be asked inside a free trial lesson of any tutor in this market including ours. Send your child's level and the school's recent topic order, take the free lesson, ask all six, and ask for the diagnosis in specific terms before you commit to anything. Lessons are one-to-one, live online, on Gulf Standard Time.
