IGCSE Home Tutor in Al Satwa

Most searches for an IGCSE home tutor in Al Satwa are really one question: is there anybody nearby who actually knows this syllabus? The honest answer is that proximity is the wrong filter. What matters is whether the tutor has taught your child's exact code, 0580 or 4MA1, 0620 or 4CH1. IB Gram matches on that and teaches one-to-one over live video.

  • Matched on the syllabus code your child is entered for
  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE both covered
  • Coverage and waiting time disclosed before any booking
  • Free trial lesson with the matched tutor, not a sales call

IB & IGCSE in Al Satwa

Proximity is the wrong filter for an IGCSE tutor

A parent in Al Satwa typing IGCSE home tutor into a search box is almost never looking for a particular pedagogy. They are looking for reassurance that somewhere within reach is a person who has taught this exact course before. That instinct is correct and the geographic version of it is self-defeating, because the IGCSE is not one qualification. It is two awarding bodies, dozens of syllabus codes, two tiers in most subjects, and two separate examination series, and a tutor who knows one combination well may know the next one barely at all.

Here is the specific trap. A family hires a competent maths graduate who lives fifteen minutes away. The child is entered for Pearson Edexcel Mathematics A, code 4MA1, where calculators are permitted in both papers and the tiering is Foundation and Higher. The tutor has taught Cambridge 0580, where the tiering is Core and Extended and the current syllabus includes a component sat without a calculator. Everything they teach is mathematically correct and a meaningful share of it is aimed at the wrong examination. The parent discovers this at the mock, not at the start.

So this page answers the question in the order that helps. First, how to establish which board and code your child is actually entered for, which is printed on the statement of entry and not always what the school says in conversation. Second, what the structural differences between the boards mean for revision. Third, the five questions that reveal whether a tutor knows a syllabus or merely knows the subject. Then the permit position, the coverage position, how practical science is assessed when lessons are online, and the Ministry of Education equivalency rule that one ranking competitor publishes incorrectly.

Al Satwa's own circumstances make the specialist question sharper than it would be in Jumeirah or Al Barsha. There is almost no international school inside the area, so children commute outward and the local pool of available tutors is not selected for anything except willingness to travel. Narrow that pool further by demanding a specific syllabus code and a specific tier and you are left with very few people, which is precisely why the honest answer to the search is to stop filtering by distance.

On delivery, plainly: IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. That service exists only in India, and it is stated the same way on every country page we publish. Al Satwa students are taught one-to-one over live video with a shared screen, which is how a past paper gets annotated in front of both parties and how a mark scheme gets read line by line. The trade is a tutor you cannot shake hands with in exchange for a tutor who has taught your child's code.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Al Satwa family's IGCSE question usually sits inside a longer route, and what comes next changes what the two years should prioritise. Below are the stages either side of the IGSCE itself.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE, Years 10 and 11

Two years of subject courses, each with a published syllabus code, assessed by terminal examination in a June or November series. Most candidates take eight to ten subjects. Tiering decisions, made at school in Year 10, cap or release the grade available, and they are reversible early and expensive later. This is where almost all Al Satwa tutoring demand sits.

The British curriculum accounts for the largest share of enrolment in Dubai's private schools, which is why IGCSE provision in and around Al Satwa is dense and why two neighbouring schools may use different awarding bodies for the same subject. KHDA inspects these schools annually, and the inspection report names curriculum and assessment quality but not the board in use, so the statement of entry remains the reference.

A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level and AS Level

Two or three subjects studied in depth after the IGCSE, examined linearly in most subjects. The step up is in volume of independent work rather than in conceptual difficulty, and students who coasted through IGCSE on recall find the first term hard. Subject choice is constrained by IGCSE tier and grade, which is why the Year 10 tiering decision reaches further than families expect.

For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, students must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, alongside the IGCSE requirement. That is the published rule, and the official channel is the authority's own page rather than any tutoring provider.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma after IGCSE

The other common route out of Year 11 in Dubai, taking six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. IGCSE students arrive with strong content recall and little experience of extended independent research, which is the reverse of what students arriving from the Middle Years Programme bring.

Several schools within the Al Satwa commute run the Diploma, so a Year 11 student here can realistically choose between a British sixth form and an IB continuum campus without changing their journey much. The decision is better made on which demands suit the student than on which qualification sounds stronger, and IGCSE grades constrain it either way.

MYPAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Arriving into IGCSE from the Middle Years Programme

Some Dubai schools run the Middle Years Programme to Year 9 and then enter students for IGCSE. Those students have strong investigation and documentation habits and predictable content gaps, because the Middle Years Programme does not cover a syllabus content list in order. Mapping the gaps in a first session is quicker than reteaching the whole course.

This route is common in Al Satwa because the area's families sit between IB continuum campuses to the west and British-curriculum schools in several directions, and move between them for reasons of fees, siblings or inspection outcome. A mid-stage transfer into Year 10 IGCSE is the single most common reason an Al Satwa family books tutoring at all.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the subjects Al Satwa families ask for most often, with the codes that matter. Where Cambridge and Pearson differ structurally, the difference is named, because that is the detail a general tutor misses.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core and Extended · Pearson 4MA1 Foundation and Higher

The highest-demand subject in this area. Current Cambridge 0580 syllabuses include a component sat without a calculator; Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator in both papers. A student revising for the wrong board arrives at the mock with the wrong arithmetic habits.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

Cambridge candidates sit either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper as a separate component. Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers instead. Revision for experimental questions therefore looks different between the boards, and most tutoring time goes on exactly that.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

Marks go missing on state symbols, significant figures, and explanations that describe what happens without saying why. Organic chemistry and moles calculations are the two topics that separate grades, and both respond to short frequent practice rather than long sessions.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1

Heavy recall combined with data interpretation and experimental evaluation. Students who revise by rereading notes plateau quickly; the gain comes from answering past-paper questions against the mark scheme and learning which command term demands which structure.

Co-ordinated and Combined Sciences

Cambridge 0654 and 0653 · Pearson 4SD0 Double Award

Awarded as two grades or one depending on the route, with content drawn from all three sciences at reduced depth. Families frequently do not know which route their child is on, and it changes how much content there is to cover by a substantial margin.

English Language

Cambridge 0500 and 0510 · Pearson 4EA1

First Language and Second Language are different qualifications with different demands, and placement in the wrong one is a recurring issue in Dubai's mixed cohorts. Marks turn on structuring a response to the question asked rather than on vocabulary.

English Literature

Cambridge 0475 · Pearson 4ET1

Set texts differ by school and by series, so a tutor must work from your school's chosen texts rather than a standard list. The assessed skill is argument built on quotation, and students who narrate the plot cap in the middle bands regardless of how well they know the book.

Economics and Business

Cambridge 0455 and 0450 · Pearson 4EC1 and 4BS1

Diagram accuracy and evaluation under time pressure decide these grades. The commonest loss is description where the command term asked for analysis or evaluation, which is a trainable habit rather than a knowledge gap.

Computer Science and ICT

Cambridge 0478 and 0417 · Pearson 4IT1

Two very different subjects that families often conflate. Computer Science examines algorithms, data representation and programming logic; ICT examines applied use of software and data handling. Tutoring one in place of the other wastes a term.

Geography and History

Cambridge 0460 and 0470 · Pearson 4GE1 and 4HI1

Both reward source handling and structured argument with specific case study detail. Students lose marks by writing generally about a topic where the question demanded a named example, and the fix is building a short, usable case study bank.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to work, chosen by what the student is short of rather than by budget. A content gap, an examination-technique gap and a tiering problem each need a different format.

Weekly one-to-one by syllabus code

One subject, one code, one tier, with the current syllabus and recent past papers open on a shared screen. The tutor works from your school's scheme of work where the school shares one, and from the published syllabus content list where it does not. This is the default arrangement for Year 10 and Year 11.

  • Matched to Cambridge or Pearson specifically, not to the subject
  • Past papers worked live and marked against the official scheme
  • Written note naming the syllabus sections covered

Gap-mapping block for mid-route transfers

For a student entering IGCSE from another system in Year 10 or part-way through Year 11. Two or three longer sessions to establish what the syllabus requires that the student has never been taught, producing a written list the family can see, before any regular schedule is agreed.

  • Syllabus content list checked topic by topic
  • Written gap list produced before hours are committed
  • Common for students arriving from the Middle Years Programme or another country

Pre-series intensive, June or November

Short-term concentrated sessions in the eight to ten weeks before a series, built entirely around past papers and mark schemes. Suitable for a student whose content is broadly in place and whose marks are being lost to command terms, timing or presentation rather than to knowledge.

  • Past papers under timed conditions, then marked together
  • Command-term discipline practised question type by question type
  • Available before either the June or the November series

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Al Satwa

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Satwa

01

The real question behind an IGCSE home tutor search in Al Satwa

  • Two awarding bodies, dozens of codes, two tiers, two series
  • Knowing the subject is not the same as knowing the syllabus
  • Al Satwa's local tutor pool is selected by travel willingness
  • Match on the code and then decide the format

Strip the search down and it asks something reasonable: is there anybody near me who actually knows this course? The problem is that the IGCSE is not one course. Two awarding bodies operate in Dubai, Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel, each with its own syllabus codes, its own tier names, its own paper structures and its own rules on calculators and practical assessment. Knowing the subject is a lower bar than knowing the syllabus, and the gap between the two is where a term of tutoring gets wasted.

In Al Satwa the geographic version of the question is particularly unhelpful. The area holds almost no international schooling, so children travel outward each morning and the pool of tutors available locally is selected by willingness to drive rather than by what they have taught. Add a requirement for a specific code and a specific tier and that pool becomes very small. The families who get the best outcome here are the ones who abandon distance as the filter and use the syllabus code instead.

The honest reframing is this. Ask not who is nearby but who has taught 4MA1 Higher, or 0620 Extended, or 4ET1 with your child's set texts. Then ask how they will deliver it. IB Gram answers the first question by matching on board and code, and the second by teaching one-to-one over live video with a shared screen. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; that service runs only in India, and that limit is published rather than discovered during a booking call.

02

First, establish which board and code your child is entered for

The document that settles this is the statement of entry, issued by the school ahead of the series. It lists the awarding body, the syllabus code and the components the candidate will sit. Ask for it, or ask the examinations officer directly, and do it before hiring anybody. Parents frequently rely on what a subject teacher said in a parents' evening, and subject teachers sometimes name the board the department used two years ago.

The table below pairs the codes for the subjects Al Satwa families ask about most, with the structural difference that actually changes revision. Mathematics is the clearest example: a current Cambridge 0580 syllabus includes a component sat without a calculator, while Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator in both papers. A student who has spent a year doing mental arithmetic drills for the wrong board has lost that year's marginal gain, and one who has never done them for the right board will feel it in the examination hall.

Science is the second place the boards diverge in a way that matters. Cambridge candidates sit a separate practical component, either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper, which is a distinct examination with its own technique. Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers instead. Preparing for one and sitting the other is not fatal, but it costs marks on exactly the questions that separate the upper grades. Always read the current syllabus on the awarding body's own site rather than a summary, because components are revised.

03

Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher: the ceiling nobody mentions

  • The tier caps the grade before the examination is sat
  • Year 10 is the window to revisit a tier; Year 11 rarely is
  • Evidence changes a tiering decision; argument does not
  • A lower-tier maths grade constrains A Level options afterwards

Tiering is the decision with the longest reach and the least discussion. In most IGCSE subjects a candidate is entered for one of two tiers, and the tier caps the grade available. A student entered for the lower tier cannot reach the top grades however well they perform, and a student entered for the higher tier who is not ready risks a result well below what the lower tier would have delivered. The school decides, usually during Year 10, on evidence that is often a single internal assessment.

The practical point for an Al Satwa family is that the decision is cheap to revisit in Year 10 and expensive in Year 11. If a child is capable of the higher tier and has been placed lower because of one bad test, the window to change that is the first two terms of Year 10, and it requires evidence rather than argument. Equally, a child drowning on the higher tier late in Year 11 is usually better served by a confident lower-tier entry than by an ambitious one, and that is a conversation to have with the school in writing.

Tiering also interacts with what comes next. A lower-tier mathematics grade can close A Level Mathematics and some science routes, and it affects what a sixth form will accept even when the published grade requirement is nominally met. Ask the school directly what tier each subject is entered at, ask what the grade ceiling is for that tier in the current syllabus, and ask what evidence would change the decision. Those three questions take one email and settle most of the anxiety behind a tutoring search.

04

Five questions that reveal whether a tutor knows the syllabus

  • Which code and which tier have you taught?
  • What are the components for that code and what does each carry?
  • What is the commonest mark loss on a named topic?
  • How are practical skills assessed on this syllabus?
  • Which series is my child entered for, and may I show you the statement of entry?

A first conversation with a prospective tutor can be made genuinely diagnostic in about four minutes, and the questions below are the ones that work. Ask which code they have taught and which tier. A tutor who knows the course answers with a number, not with the subject name. Ask what the component structure is for that code, and listen for whether they name the papers and what each carries. Vagueness here is the single most reliable warning sign available to a parent.

Ask what the commonest mark loss is on a named topic in that syllabus. A tutor who has marked work will give a specific answer, such as state symbols omitted in ionic equations or a general rule stated without notation. Ask how practical skills are assessed on that code, because the answer differs between the boards and a tutor who has only taught the other one will get it wrong. And ask which series the student is entered for, which should prompt them to ask you for the statement of entry rather than guess.

Two things that are not diagnostic, despite being what the market advertises: a general degree classification, and a claim about examiner status. A first-class degree in physics says nothing about whether somebody has taught 4PH1. Examiner status should be treated carefully in this market, because current status is hard to verify and because it is often used to imply access to marking or boundaries, which no tutor has. What is verifiable is whether the person can describe your child's examination accurately, and that is the test worth applying.

05

Is your tutor legally permitted to teach in the UAE?

This is the question almost nobody in the market addresses, and the answer is public. Private tutoring in the UAE is permit-regulated. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and it is granted free of charge for two years. Anybody quoting a permit fee is mistaken. The route is MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service, available through its smart app, website and e-services system, with a stated completion time of two working days.

The eligible categories are broader than families expect and are set out in the table below. What matters alongside eligibility is the consequence of not holding one: individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any specific figure circulating online should be treated as unverified. A tutoring operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal again, requiring a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is not something an individual tutor holds.

One boundary is worth holding firmly. In Abu Dhabi, professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from giving paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the holder's own school. That is press-reported rather than quoted from the live policy, so verify it with ADEK before relying on it. The reason to know it is that families in Dubai sometimes ask for their child's own classroom teacher privately, and that is the one arrangement to steer away from.

Coverage and fallback: what happens when nobody teaches it

Every tutoring provider in this market implies unlimited coverage and none of them has it. Publishing the limits is more useful than concealing them, because a family that waits two weeks for the right specialist does better than one that starts next Tuesday with a generalist. The table below sets out the realistic position by subject and level, including what we do when no suitable tutor is free.

The pattern is consistent. Mainstream mathematics and science at either tier is well covered and matches quickly. Narrower components take longer: Further Pure Mathematics, Computer Science programming paper work, and English Literature where the set texts are unusual. Where a UAE-based specialist is not available, our fallback is a specialist based elsewhere teaching in Gulf Standard Time, which is disclosed before booking rather than afterwards, and which is the real reason online delivery exists for a place like Al Satwa.

What we will not do is substitute. A general mathematics tutor placed into a 4PM1 Further Pure request produces a term of competent, irrelevant teaching, and the family discovers it at the mock. If the honest answer is a wait, or a different band in the week, or that we cannot cover it at all, that is what you will be told before a trial lesson is arranged. Families reading this page should apply the same question to any provider: what is your coverage on this exact code, and what happens if you do not have it?

How science practicals are assessed when lessons are online

  • Practical skills are examined on paper in both boards' structures
  • Most Dubai candidates sit the alternative-to-practical route in Cambridge sciences
  • Apparatus handling is the school's laboratory work, not a tutor's
  • Past alternative-to-practical papers are the highest-yield revision in science

This is the reasonable objection to online science tutoring, and it deserves a direct answer. The practical skills in an IGCSE science are examined on paper, not in a laboratory. Cambridge candidates sit either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper as a separate component, and the overwhelming majority of Dubai school candidates sit the alternative-to-practical version. Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers. In both cases the examination asks a student to read apparatus diagrams, identify variables, spot sources of error, process a results table and evaluate a method.

All of that is examinable work that happens on paper, with a mark scheme, and all of it is teachable over a shared screen. What cannot be taught online is the physical handling of equipment, and that is the school's job and happens in the school's laboratory. The honest division of labour is that the school supplies the hands and the tutor supplies the examination technique, and the component that carries the marks is the second one.

The practical technique that gains the most marks is reading a results table for what the examiner has planted in it: an anomalous value, an uncontrolled variable, a scale that invites a wrong gradient. Students are rarely taught to look for those deliberately. Working through the alternative-to-practical papers of past series, annotating what each question is testing and then marking the student's own answers against the published scheme, is the single highest-yield use of a tutoring hour in IGCSE science, and it needs a screen rather than a bench.

08

Ministry of Education equivalency, and the rule a competitor publishes wrongly

  • Five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3
  • Plus one A Level at E, or two AS Levels at E
  • Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from the five
  • Verify on the Ministry's own page; no provider performs equivalency

Families in Dubai eventually meet equivalency, the process by which the Ministry of Education recognises a foreign secondary certificate for use in the UAE. For the British track the published requirement is specific: a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and must also submit proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade.

The detail that catches people out is what does not count. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE count. One provider currently ranking for these searches states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which is not what the published rule says. Getting this right matters because families make subject-dropping decisions in Year 10 on the strength of what they read, and a wrong subject count either wastes a year of study or leaves a shortfall discovered too late.

Two cautions. Equivalency is a regulatory process run by the authority, not something a tutoring provider performs, guarantees or accelerates, and the official channel is the authority's own page. And no IB points threshold for equivalency should be relied on from any source other than the Ministry's own publication, because the British-track figures are published and the IB figure is not. Tutoring is also not a requirement for equivalency, university admission or school progression, and anyone implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency around a regulatory process.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Satwa

Al Satwa's neighbours share its roads and its schools. The notes below are about where the IGCSE cohorts actually sit and how quickly a tutor can be reached from each community, which is the practical question rather than property or amenity.

Al Hudaiba

West of Al Satwa with the same access to Al Mina Road. Children here are mostly in British-curriculum schools along the Jumeirah strip, so Cambridge and Pearson provision are both in play within one street.

Al Bada'a

Closer to the Al Safa and Jumeirah school cluster, which shortens the afternoon run. Families here are the most likely in the group to be entered with a mixed board profile, maths with one board and sciences with another.

Jumeirah 1 and 2

The coastal strip where several of the IGCSE cohorts Al Satwa families belong to actually sit. Set texts in English Literature vary noticeably between these schools, so a tutor must work from the school's own list.

Al Mankhool and Bur Dubai

Across old Dubai, holding a wider spread of curricula including schools where students move into IGCSE from another system in Year 10. Content gap mapping matters more here than examination technique.

Oud Metha and Al Jafiliya

North-east along the commute, with long-established schools running IGCSE alongside other curricula. Several enter candidates in the November series as a resit route, which changes the revision calendar substantially.

Trade Centre and Za'abeel

Apartment living south-east of Al Satwa with no school inside the community. Every family commutes, and the available local tutor pool is correspondingly thin, which is the circumstance this page is written for.

Al Wasl and Al Safa

A short drive south-west with IB continuum campuses alongside British-curriculum schools, so some Year 10 students here are arriving into IGCSE from the Middle Years Programme with predictable gaps.

Al Quoz and Umm Al Sheif

Further out, reached slowly at pick-up hour. Families commuting this far are the clearest case for online delivery, because an in-home tutor's travel window and the school run overlap almost exactly.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Satwa

Jumeirah, Al Safa and Al Jafiliya

The westward commute from Al Satwa, holding most of the British-curriculum IGCSE cohorts these families belong to. Awarding bodies differ between campuses and sometimes between departments inside one campus, which is why the statement of entry rather than the school name settles the question.

  • Horizon English School
  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School

Oud Metha, Bur Dubai and Al Qusais

The eastward commute, with a wider curriculum mix and more students entering IGCSE part-way through a school career. Several schools in this cluster use the November series as a resit route, which shifts the useful revision window by six months.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Find the statement of entry

Before anything else, get the document that names the awarding body, the syllabus code and the components your child will sit. The school's examinations officer will supply it. Everything in a sensible tutoring arrangement follows from that one piece of paper rather than from a subject name.

  2. 02

Tell us the code, not just the subject

Mathematics is not a request. Mathematics 4MA1 Higher, or 0580 Extended, is a request. We match on board, code and tier, which is the only way to put a tutor in front of your child who has taught the examination they are actually sitting.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the matched tutor

Sixty minutes on work your child is doing this week, with a past paper from the right board open on the shared screen. Ask the five diagnostic questions yourself during or after it. If the match is wrong, we change the tutor rather than the subject.

  4. 04

Agree the gap list before the hours

For a student who has transferred into IGCSE part-way through, the first job is a written list of what the syllabus requires that they have never been taught. You see that list before committing to a schedule, so the hours are spent on gaps rather than on a sweep of the whole course.

  5. 05

Work past papers against the mark scheme

Once content is in place, sessions move to timed past papers marked together against the official scheme. That is where command-term discipline, presentation and timing are built, and it is the part of the work that separates a solid grade from the one above it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by code and tier

A Cambridge 0620 specialist and a Pearson 4CH1 specialist are not interchangeable, and we do not treat them as if they were. The request we work from is the syllabus code on the statement of entry, which is the only version of the question that produces the right tutor.

Coverage limits published

The coverage table on this page is honest, including the components where availability is thin and the wait is two weeks or more. Where we cannot cover something, you are told before a trial lesson is arranged rather than after a term of generalist teaching.

Online, and the limit stated

Lessons run one-to-one over live video with a shared screen for past papers and mark schemes. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. Al Satwa families get that in writing on this page instead of on a booking call.

Permit position explained, not implied

We set out what the MoHRE private tutor permit is, that it is free and valid for two years, and what the categories are, so a parent can ask the right question of anybody they hire. We make no claim to regulator approval, because IB Gram holds none.

Practical science handled honestly

Apparatus handling belongs in the school laboratory. What a tutor can teach is the examined practical technique on paper: variables, error sources, results tables and evaluation. We say which is which rather than implying a screen can replace a bench.

A clear line on assessed work

We teach, question and mark the student's own answers. We do not supply coursework, and for the subjects that carry it the student's work must be their own for the entry to stand. That line is part of the service rather than a caveat on it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Satwa: your questions answered

How do I find out which IGCSE board my child in Al Satwa is actually entered for?+

Ask the school's examinations officer for the statement of entry. It names the awarding body, the syllabus code and the components the candidate will sit, and it is the only reliable source. Parents often rely on what a subject teacher mentioned at a parents' evening, and departments change board between cohorts, so that information goes stale. Do this before hiring anybody. The difference between Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 changes calculator rules, tier names and paper structure, and a tutor preparing for the wrong one will be teaching correct mathematics towards the wrong examination.

Are Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE qualifications the same thing?+

They are comparable qualifications from different awarding bodies, and they are not interchangeable in preparation. Tier names differ, with Cambridge using Core and Extended and Pearson using Foundation and Higher. Calculator rules differ in mathematics. Practical science assessment differs structurally, Cambridge using a separate practical or alternative-to-practical component while Pearson assesses practical skills within the written papers. Content lists overlap heavily but not entirely. Universities and the UAE Ministry of Education treat both as accredited, so the choice is the school's; the difference matters for revision rather than recognition.

What does Core and Extended mean, and does it limit my child's grade?+

They are the two tiers of entry in most Cambridge IGCSE subjects, and yes, the tier sets a ceiling on the grade available before the examination is sat. Pearson's equivalent is Foundation and Higher. Schools usually decide during Year 10, sometimes on a single internal assessment. The decision is realistically revisable in the first two terms of Year 10 with evidence, and rarely revisable in Year 11. Ask the school which tier each subject is entered at, what the ceiling is under the current syllabus, and what evidence would change it.

Can a tutor who has taught GCSE in the UK teach my child's IGCSE in Dubai?+

Often yes, and it depends on the subject and how much they have read. The IGCSE and the English GCSE share a great deal of content but differ in paper structure, tiering, practical assessment and series timing. A tutor who has taught English GCSE Mathematics will know the mathematics; whether they know that current Cambridge 0580 includes a non-calculator component, or how Pearson 4MA1 distributes marks across two papers, is a separate question. Ask them which international code they have taught, and treat a vague answer as a warning.

When are IGCSE exams held for a candidate in Dubai?+

UAE candidates sit the June series and the November series. Cambridge runs its IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October; the February and March series is offered to India only, so no UAE family should be planning around it. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE examinations are available in May and June and in November. Every centre is allocated to one of six Cambridge administrative zones, and using the wrong zone timetable is a real risk, so work from the school's own confirmed timetable.

Which five IGCSE subjects count for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

The published British-track rule requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five. One provider currently ranking for these searches states six subjects are required, which does not match the published rule. Verify the current requirement on the Ministry's own page, since equivalency is a regulatory process no tutoring provider performs or guarantees.

Do you provide a tutor who comes to our building in Al Satwa?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Local independent tutors and agencies do offer them, at published market rates of roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour including travel, against AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. In Al Satwa the travel premium buys a tutor's unbillable hour in pick-up traffic and a candidate pool narrowed to whoever will make the trip, which is the opposite of what a specific syllabus code requires.

How is IGCSE practical science examined if my child never does experiments with the tutor?+

Because the practical marks are earned on paper. Cambridge candidates sit either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper, and most Dubai school candidates sit the alternative. Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers. Both ask students to read apparatus diagrams, identify variables, spot error sources, process results tables and evaluate methods, all of which is teachable on a shared screen with past papers and mark schemes. Physical apparatus handling happens in the school laboratory, which is where it belongs; the examined technique is what a tutor adds.

What should I ask a prospective IGCSE tutor in the first phone call?+

Five things. Which syllabus code and tier have you taught? What are the components for that code and what does each carry? What is the commonest mark loss on a named topic in it? How are practical skills assessed on this syllabus? And which series is my child entered for, which should prompt them to ask for the statement of entry. A tutor who knows the course answers with numbers and paper names. Degree classification and claimed examiner status are not diagnostic, and the latter is difficult to verify in this market.

My child joined Year 10 IGCSE from a different curriculum. Where do we start?+

With a written gap list rather than a schedule. Two or three longer sessions checking the published syllabus content list topic by topic will establish what the course requires that your child has never been taught, which is almost never the whole course and is rarely what the family assumed. Students arriving from the Middle Years Programme typically have strong investigation habits and specific content holes. Students arriving from another country's system often have the content in a different order. Map it first, then commit hours.

Is the November series a realistic route if a June grade disappoints?+

Yes, and it is used routinely in Dubai, particularly in mathematics and the sciences. The practical consideration is the entry deadline, which sits months before the examination, so the decision has to be made soon after results rather than at leisure. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE results from the November 2025 series reached students on 22 January 2026, which gives a sense of the turnaround. Work from the school's confirmed timetable and the awarding body's live timetable page rather than from any restated dates, because provisional timetables are revised.

We are behind in four IGCSE subjects. Should we book a tutor for all of them?+

One, in most cases, and two at the outside. Families under pressure in Year 11 ask for four and then discover that four weekly hours plus school plus revision leaves no time to actually practise anything. The better pattern is to identify the subject where the grade is furthest from where it needs to be, work that one properly for a term, and reassess. Tutoring produces movement by changing how a student works, and that change has to be absorbed in the hours between sessions rather than during them.

If my two children sit different IGCSE boards, can the same tutor take both?+

Technically yes, and usually it is a false economy. A tutor matched to Cambridge 0620 Extended for one child and asked to cover Pearson 4MA1 Higher for the other is a specialist in one of those two things. Where both children need the same board, the same subject and a similar stage, a shared arrangement can work. Where they do not, two specialists each working one slot deliver more than one tutor working two, and the cost difference is smaller than families expect once wasted sessions are counted.

What happens if you cannot find a tutor for my child's subject?+

We say so before a trial lesson is booked. Mainstream mathematics and science at either tier match within a few days. Narrower components take longer: Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1, Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science programming work and English Literature with unusual set texts can take two weeks or more. Where no UAE-based specialist is free, the fallback is a specialist elsewhere teaching in Gulf Standard Time, disclosed in advance. What we will not do is put a general tutor into a specialist request and let you find out at the mock.

Bring the code, and the rest becomes straightforward

The most useful five minutes an Al Satwa family can spend is emailing the school's examinations officer for the statement of entry. Once you know the board, the code and the tier, the search stops being about who lives nearby and becomes a question with a clean answer. Send us the code and we will match a tutor who has taught that examination, tell you honestly what the wait is, and arrange a free trial lesson on work your child is doing this week. Sessions run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. If we cannot cover the code, we will say that instead.
