IGCSE Science Tutor in Al Satwa

Looking for an IGCSE science tutor in Al Satwa is harder than it sounds, because IGCSE science is not one qualification. It is at least six, across two boards, with different papers, different practical arrangements and different certificates at the end. This page tells you which one your child is sitting, how to check in a single email, and how to test whether a tutor knows that exact variant. One-to-one, live online, free trial first.

  • Matched to 0620, 0625, 0610, 0653, 0654, 4SD0 or 4SC0 by code
  • Four questions that test any tutor's grasp of your variant
  • Alternative-to-practical paper taught as its own skill
  • Free diagnostic lesson before any block is booked

IB & IGCSE in Al Satwa

Which IGCSE science is your child actually sitting?

A parent searching for an IGCSE science tutor assumes they are shopping for one thing. They are not. Within Cambridge alone, a Dubai school can enter a student for separate Chemistry (0620), Physics (0625) and Biology (0610), or for Co-ordinated Sciences as a double award (0654), or for Combined Science as a single award (0653). Pearson Edexcel runs its own separate sciences — 4CH1, 4PH1, 4BI1 — plus Science Double Award (4SD0) and Science Single Award (4SC0). Those routes have different paper structures, different content depth, and they produce different certificates.

That matters immediately, because a tutor prepared on separate-science resources for a Combined Science candidate will spend part of every session on content outside the student's syllabus. The student will not know. The parent will not know. It will show up as slow progress and be attributed to effort. This is the most common quiet failure in IGCSE science tutoring and it is entirely avoidable with one email to the school office.

The email asks three things: which science route is my child entered for, which syllabus codes, and which tier where tiering applies. The answer is on the statement of entry the school issues. Three lines, and the matching problem disappears. Send those lines with your first enquiry and the first session can be spent on diagnosis rather than on working out what is being taught.

The second thing a Satwa family needs to understand is the practical arrangement, because it varies and because it carries marks. Cambridge includes an alternative-to-practical paper for candidates not sitting a laboratory examination, and answering it well is a distinct taught skill: reading a scale correctly, identifying a control variable, explaining an anomaly, describing a method in procedural rather than narrative language. Students who know the science fluently lose marks on this paper because nobody taught the paper. A tutor who treats it as a by-product of content knowledge has misunderstood where those marks sit.

Geography adds a third factor. Al Satwa has almost no private schools inside it; children travel out to Oud Metha, Al Mankhool, Jumeirah, Al Safa, Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim. Across those clusters, different schools make different science entry choices, which is why a neighbour's recommendation is a poor guide. The tutor who was excellent for the child next door may have been excellent at a different qualification.

Lessons from IB Gram are one-to-one and delivered live online to Al Satwa on Gulf Standard Time, with the first one free so the diagnosis costs nothing. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. The trade is stated plainly: no person in the room, and a tutor matched to the exact syllabus code rather than to whoever teaches science within a short drive of Satwa.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Science support looks different at each stage, and the questions worth asking a tutor change with it. Below is what a Satwa family is dealing with before, during and after the IGCSE science years.

LSAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary Science

Three years assessed internally, with optional Checkpoint tests at the end of Year 9. Nothing appears on a certificate, which makes it the cheapest point at which to build the two things IGCSE science actually rewards: quantitative confidence and the discipline of writing a method as a procedure rather than as a story.

The Year 9 science pathway conversation decides whether a child takes three separate sciences or a combined route, and it happens earlier than most parents expect. One or two sessions before it gives a Satwa parent something specific to discuss with the school.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson International GCSE Sciences

Two years to a June or November series across one of several routes: three separate sciences, a double award, or a single award. Cambridge tiers several of them into Core and Extended. The entry is made by the school ahead of the series deadline and is printed on the statement of entry.

On the British track, Ministry of Education equivalency requires five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the five. A double award counts differently from three separate sciences, which is worth checking against the authority's own guidance before assuming.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

AS and A Level Sciences

Where the science route choice shows its consequence. Students arriving at AS Chemistry or Physics from a combined or single-award route generally have further to travel than those arriving from the separate sciences, and the gap appears first in quantitative work rather than in content recall.

Several schools within reach of Al Satwa expect separate sciences at IGCSE for entry to the corresponding A Level. Confirm the requirement with the specific sixth form before Year 10 entries are made, because the remedy afterwards is a resit series.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Sciences

The alternative post-16 route, offered by several schools Satwa families travel to. Diploma sciences carry an internally assessed investigation worth 20% of the grade, so the experimental and uncertainty skills built at IGCSE pay forward directly rather than being left behind.

Dubai's International Baccalaureate cohort is about 7% of private enrolment against 37% on the UK curriculum, so a Satwa student moving IGCSE science to Diploma science joins the smaller stream — and specialist supply there is thinner, which rewards booking earlier.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The grid below is organised by what a tutor actually has to be good at, across the three sciences and the practical paper. A tutor who is strong in one science and thin in the other two is a common and expensive mismatch for a double-award candidate.

Chemistry: moles and stoichiometry

0620, 4CH1, and within 0653 / 0654

The calculation spine of the subject at every route. Students who can define molar mass and cannot complete a three-stage calculation involving a limiting reagent lose marks across the whole paper. Depth of mole work differs sharply between separate and combined routes, which is exactly why the code matters.

Chemistry: organic and qualitative analysis

0620, 4CH1, reduced in 0653 / 0654

Reaction pathways and the observation language a qualitative test demands. Marks go on precise wording — white precipitate, soluble in excess — and students who describe loosely lose them. The combined routes carry a reduced version, so practising on separate-science questions wastes time.

Physics: electricity and circuits

0625, 4PH1, and within 0653 / 0654

The highest single source of lost marks in IGCSE physics. The difficulty is explaining why a reading changes when a component is altered, which requires a chain of reasoning rather than a calculation. Series and parallel reasoning rewards drawing before calculating.

Physics: forces, moments and motion

0625, 4PH1, and within 0653 / 0654

Moments questions are lost in the arithmetic of distances from a pivot rather than in the principle. Graph interpretation — distance-time against velocity-time — is a recurring examiner favourite and a recurring student confusion that one focused session usually settles.

Biology: enzymes, transport and osmosis

0610, 4BI1, and within 0653 / 0654

Explanation-heavy topics where Extended-tier questions demand reasoning rather than description. Students who describe what a graph shows and never say why lose the upper band consistently. Osmosis answers need the water-potential logic written out, not implied.

Biology: genetics and inheritance

0610, 4BI1, reduced in combined routes

Genetic crosses are procedural and therefore quick to repair once the layout is drilled. The common loss is inconsistent notation rather than misunderstanding, and that is a half-session fix with a disproportionate return on a paper.

Co-ordinated and Combined Science routes

Cambridge 0654 double, 0653 single

Two distinct routes that look alike on a timetable and are not alike on a paper. Content depth is reduced relative to separate sciences and the paper structure differs. A tutor using separate-science past papers for these candidates is preparing for a harder exam than the one being sat.

Pearson Science Double and Single Award

4SD0 and 4SC0

Pearson's equivalents of the combined routes, with their own specification and paper arrangement. Formula and data provision differs from Cambridge, which changes what has to be memorised. Always work from the actual specification rather than from a generic revision list.

Practical skills and the alternative-to-practical paper

Cambridge routes

Reading a scale to the right precision, identifying independent, dependent and control variables, explaining an anomaly, and writing a method as a numbered procedure. This is examinable technique and it is the most reliably neglected part of IGCSE science support.

Command words and mark-scheme language

All routes

State, describe, explain, suggest and compare each demand a different response shape, and the mark scheme awards accordingly. Students who answer every question in the same register leave marks on every paper. A short repeated drill shifts grades faster than more content.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Science support is bought in three shapes, and the right one depends on the route rather than on preference. A double-award candidate has different needs from a triple-science candidate, and the arrangement should reflect that.

One tutor across a combined or double-award route

For 0653, 0654, 4SD0 or 4SC0 candidates, a single tutor covering all three science strands at the reduced depth those routes require is usually the right arrangement. It keeps the content coherent, avoids three separate scheduling problems, and matches the way the papers are actually structured.

  • Matched to the double or single award code, not to separate sciences
  • Past papers drawn from the correct route from session one
  • One slot to schedule around the Satwa school run
  • Practical-paper technique taught across all three strands

Separate specialists for triple science

For students entered for 0620, 0625 and 0610 separately, or the Pearson equivalents, one tutor rarely has equal depth in all three. The honest arrangement is a specialist for the subject in trouble rather than a generalist for all three, which also keeps the cost proportionate to the diagnosis.

  • One science at a time, chosen by the diagnosis
  • Avoids paying for coverage of subjects already secure
  • Specialist depth where the marks are actually going
  • Rotate rather than run three weekly slots at once

Practical-paper technique block

A short, self-contained run on the alternative-to-practical skills: scale reading, variable identification, anomaly explanation and method written as procedure. It applies across all three sciences at once, which makes it unusually efficient, and it is the part of IGCSE science most reliably left untaught.

  • Four to six sessions, applying to all three strands
  • Technique drilled on real past-paper questions
  • Useful regardless of which route the student is on
  • Outcome is checkable at the end of the block

Mandatory UAE subject support alongside science

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies run in all Dubai private schools alongside the licensed curriculum and compete for the same evenings as science. KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, and for these subjects the use of different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is prohibited.

  • Taught to the school's own stream and materials
  • Shorter session, separate evening from science
  • Outside the five subjects counted for British-track equivalency
  • Scheduled deliberately rather than squeezed in

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Satwa

01

IGCSE science is at least six qualifications

There is no such thing as the IGCSE science syllabus. There are separate sciences, a double award and a single award, in each of two boards, and a Dubai school may use any of them. Each has its own code, its own paper structure and its own content depth, and the certificate at the end says something different. A family that does not know which one applies is not in a position to buy the right help.

The practical consequence is sharp. Content depth in Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences (0654) and Combined Science (0653) is reduced relative to the separate sciences, and the paper structure differs. A tutor working from 0620 chemistry past papers with a 0653 candidate is drilling harder questions on a wider syllabus than the student will sit. Some of that is harmless, much of it is wasted time, and some of it actively damages confidence for no examinable return.

The reverse error is just as common and more costly. A triple-science candidate given combined-route material arrives at the real paper under-prepared on depth. Because the topics are recognisable, nobody notices until a mock. By then a term has gone.

The table below lists the routes a Dubai school realistically enters students for. Take it to the school office with one question — which of these is my child on — and write the answer down. Then check that the tutor's past papers match it in the first session, which takes thirty seconds and is the single highest-value check available to a parent in this subject.

Four questions that test whether a tutor knows your variant

You do not need to understand the science to test a science tutor. You need four questions whose answers depend on knowing the specific route your child is on, and a sense of what a real answer sounds like. Ask them in the free trial lesson, where they cost nothing, and judge the specificity rather than the confidence.

The first question is simply which code the tutor thinks they are teaching. A specialist asks you before you ask them, because they know the answer changes what they prepare. Somebody who says 'IGCSE science is all much the same' has told you they do not plan to check.

The second and third probe depth: what content is in the separate sciences and not in the combined route, and how the practical skills are assessed on your child's papers. A tutor who can describe what drops out of the combined routes has taught both. A tutor who describes the alternative-to-practical paper as 'just the theory of experiments' has not taught it, because the paper has a distinct question grammar that has to be drilled.

The fourth is about your school specifically: what has the class covered so far, and when is the next assessment? A tutor who wants that information will teach against the school's sequence rather than against a generic plan. A tutor who proposes starting at the beginning of the syllabus in February is about to spend your money repeating October.

03

The practical paper nobody teaches

  • Scale reading to the correct precision, including between marks
  • Independent, dependent and control variables named correctly
  • Anomalies explained by mechanism, not by blaming the experimenter
  • Improvements that address the stated weakness in the method
  • Methods written as numbered procedures with quantities and repeats

Cambridge includes an alternative-to-practical paper for candidates not sitting a laboratory examination, and it is the most reliably neglected component in IGCSE science. Students who can recite the content lose marks here because the paper examines a separate set of skills, and those skills are taught by drilling the question types rather than by knowing more science.

What the paper actually asks for is narrow and learnable. Read a scale to the correct precision, including judging where a needle or meniscus sits between marks. Identify the independent, dependent and control variables in a described experiment, which students confuse with astonishing consistency. Explain an anomalous result, which requires naming a plausible mechanism rather than saying the student made a mistake. Suggest an improvement that addresses the actual weakness in the method described. And write a method as a numbered procedure with quantities and repeats, not as a narrative.

Each of those is a pattern with a mark-scheme preference, and each is practised rather than understood. Four to six sessions on the question types will usually move a student from losing most of these marks to collecting most of them, and the block applies across chemistry, physics and biology simultaneously — which makes it the most efficient block available on a combined or double-award route.

One thing a tutor cannot replace is the laboratory itself. Practical work belongs to the school, and nobody should imply otherwise. What support can do is prepare a student for the laboratory session — the variables, the precision, the repeats — and then work with the data the student actually collected, which is both honest and where the assessed marks sit.

04

Where the marks go in each of the three sciences

Each science loses marks in its own characteristic way, and a tutor who cannot name the pattern for your child's subject after reading one marked script is not worth a weekly slot. In chemistry the losses concentrate in calculation: limiting-reagent work abandoned part way, mole arithmetic attempted without a plan, and qualitative analysis answers written in loose language where the mark scheme wants precise observation terms.

In physics the dominant loss is electricity, and specifically the explanation questions. Marks are awarded for a chain of reasoning — this increases, so this decreases, so the reading falls — and students who know the answer write the conclusion and skip the chain. Moments and graph interpretation follow close behind, and both are arithmetic and convention problems rather than conceptual ones.

In biology the loss is in the gap between describing and explaining. Extended-tier questions ask why, and students answer what. Osmosis, enzyme graphs and transport in plants all reward a written logic that most students carry in their heads and never put on paper. Genetics is the exception: it is procedural, and once the cross layout is drilled, the marks come reliably.

Across all three, command words account for a quiet and substantial loss. State, describe, explain, suggest and compare each require a different response shape, and a student who answers every question in the same register leaves marks on every paper. It is the cheapest drill in the subject and it is almost never taught deliberately.

05

Cambridge against Pearson for the same science

Parents often assume the board is interchangeable because the subject name is the same. It is not, and the differences are practical. Formula and data provision differs, which changes what has to be memorised. Paper structures differ. Some Pearson subjects operate modular assessment where units can be sat across series, which changes when support is best concentrated. Cambridge tiers several sciences into Core and Extended; Pearson's arrangement differs by subject.

The board is chosen by the school, not by the family, so this is not a decision to agonise over. It is a fact to establish and then respect. The question to ask is simply which board and which code, and then to confirm that the tutor's practice material matches. A tutor who shrugs at the board question is going to hand your child the wrong past papers.

The modular point deserves emphasis because it changes the shape of a plan. Where a route allows units to be sat across series, support concentrated in the weeks before each unit outperforms an even spread across two years. Where assessment is terminal, the opposite is true and a steady build with a pre-series intensive is better. Getting this wrong wastes months of effort on a correct-sounding schedule.

On materials: syllabus documents, specifications, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson. The right behaviour for any tutor or platform is to reference them and link the official source rather than hosting copies, which is why this page points to cambridgeinternational.org and qualifications.pearson.com instead of offering downloads.

What science support costs, and whether one tutor can cover three

Market rates in Dubai, as of October 2026, run from roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour at the budget online end — Tutopiya from about AED 33 to 52, EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. A qualified subject tutor working online sits between AED 150 and 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase listing AED 270. In-home one-to-one is quoted at AED 180 to 500 including travel, Bestimate putting the usual range at AED 180 to 350. The premium named tier begins near AED 500, with BartyED at AED 650. Those figures belong to the providers named, not to IB Gram.

The three-sciences question is where families lose money, and the answer depends entirely on the route. On a combined or double-award route, one tutor covering all three strands at the reduced depth those routes require is the right and cheaper arrangement. On a triple separate-science route, one tutor with equal depth in chemistry, physics and biology is uncommon, and paying a single generalist to cover all three is usually worse value than paying a specialist for the one subject in trouble.

That distinction has a direct budget consequence. A family with a triple-science candidate who funds three weekly slots is spending at specialist rates on coverage rather than on diagnosis, and two of the three subjects are often not where the marks are going. Rotating a single slot by diagnosis — chemistry this term, physics next — costs a third as much and addresses the actual problem.

The practical-paper block is the exception that applies to everyone. Because the skills it teaches cut across all three sciences at once, four to six sessions there serve the whole entry regardless of route. For a double-award candidate in particular it is the most efficient science spend available.

The June and November series, and the resit decision

Science entries are made months before the exams, and the decisions that matter are locked by those deadlines. Working backwards from a series produces a plan; working forwards from the current report card produces a reaction. For a Satwa family the useful milestones are the entry deadline, the mock window, the point eight to twelve weeks out, and the results release.

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series. Every exam centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. One question to the school office — which zone is our centre in — removes a real and avoidable risk.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. For the June 2026 series, results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so read the live official timetable rather than any restatement, including this one.

The resit decision is the one that catches families out. A November entry has to be made shortly after June results arrive, which is exactly when a household is least organised. Drafting the resit plan before results day — which subject, at which tier, and on what evidence — turns a scramble into a decision. It costs nothing to prepare and it is the difference between a planned retake and a missed deadline.

Permits, approvals and what nobody can promise

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and a parent is entitled to ask about it. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount appears on this page, and any site quoting one is quoting something it cannot source.

On regulators: in Dubai, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate; in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain it is ADEK; in Sharjah the Sharjah Private Education Authority; in Ras Al Khaimah the Department of Knowledge; and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. KHDA inspects schools and issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises. It does not accredit individual tutors, so there is no such thing as a KHDA-approved science tutor. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge accreditation, claims none, and has no UAE office.

Two final things nobody should be telling you. No tutor can promise a grade, a number of marks or an improvement in an externally assessed examination. And tutoring is not required for Ministry of Education equivalency, for university admission or for school progression — the British-track equivalency rule is five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the five, and nothing about that process requires a tutor.

09

Starting, and the coverage limit stated honestly

Getting started is three lines and one free lesson. The three lines are the school and year group, the science route with its codes and tier from the statement of entry, and what the last piece of marked work looked like. With those, the free session goes on diagnosis instead of on introductions, and you end it with named topics you can plan against.

Cover is not uniform and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Separate-science specialists at Extended tier are the widest pool. Double and single award routes are narrower, because fewer tutors have deliberately taught the reduced-depth specifications and many simply teach separate-science content at them, which is the mismatch this whole page is about. A specific subject combined with a fixed weekday hour is narrower still.

The honest options when the right person is not free are a short wait, which is usually weeks and almost always better than the wrong match; a different weekly slot, because a different hour is a different market; or a tutor outside the UAE working on Gulf Standard Time for the same code. What should not happen is a separate-science tutor taking a 0653 candidate without adjusting the material, which is invisible for about six weeks and costs a term.

One last note on coursework and assessed work, which applies even though most IGCSE science routes have no written coursework component. A tutor may teach content, explain assessment criteria in the board's own words, model a method on a different example, and give feedback on work the student wrote. A tutor may not write, complete, rewrite or edit assessed work to completion. One operator visible in this market sells finished Internal Assessments; the consequence of that lands on the student, not on the seller.

The nearest established secondary cluster, with a mix of British and Indian curriculum provision. Science routes vary school by school here, including both separate and combined entries, so confirm the code rather than assuming.

Al Mankhool

Short commute from Satwa with long-established British provision. Worth asking specifically whether triple separate sciences are offered to all students or only to a set, because that is a common restriction.

Jumeirah 1

Coastal and one of the earlier afternoon returns in the district, which makes a 16:30 science slot sustainable where it is not further inland. Provision is mixed between boards.

Al Safa

Across Sheikh Zayed Road, holding both British IGCSE and IB Diploma schools. Families choosing here for post-16 reasons should check the IGCSE science route the school uses as a feeder.

Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

A large concentration of secondary provision and the commute that most reliably pushes a weekday session to 18:00. Both Cambridge and Pearson science entries appear across these schools.

Umm Suqeim

Several larger international schools, and the longest of the common Satwa school runs. Plan an evening slot from the outset rather than discovering it in the second month.

Al Garhoud and Deira

Across the creek, used by a smaller number of Satwa families. Creek crossings make the afternoon return the least predictable element of any schedule here.

Al Hudaiba and Al Bada'a

Adjacent to Satwa with the same housing and commute patterns, so planning assumptions carry across without adjustment.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Satwa

Oud Metha, Al Mankhool and Bur Dubai

The closest secondary cluster to Al Satwa and the one with the widest spread of science entry routes — separate sciences at some schools, double award at others. This is the cluster where checking the code before buying hours saves the most money.

  • GEMS Winchester School, Oud Metha
  • St Mary's Catholic High School, Oud Metha
  • Dubai Gem Private School, Oud Metha
  • Ambassador School, Al Mankhool
  • The Indian High School, Oud Metha

Jumeirah, Al Safa and Al Wasl

The coastal run, with earlier finishes in parts of Jumeirah offset by the Sheikh Zayed Road crossing for Al Safa. Several schools here feed directly into A Level sciences, which makes the IGCSE route choice consequential.

  • Jumeirah College, Al Safa
  • Safa British School, Al Safa
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Jumeira
  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

The long commute and the largest cohorts. Both boards appear across these schools, and triple separate sciences are often set-restricted rather than universally available, which is a question worth asking in Year 9.

  • GEMS Wellington International School, Al Sufouh
  • Dubai American Academy, Al Barsha
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Barsha
  • Raffles World Academy, Umm Suqeim

Schools are named as local context for families searching from this district; IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Email the school for the route and the codes

Three lines back: which science route, which syllabus codes, and which tier where tiering applies. It is on the statement of entry. This single email is the highest-value thing a parent can do in this subject, because it is what stops a tutor preparing for a different exam.

  2. 02

Check the past papers in the first session

Ask the tutor to show you which past paper they are working from and confirm the code on it matches your child's. Thirty seconds, and it catches the most common and most expensive mismatch in IGCSE science tutoring before any money is spent.

  3. 03

Use the free lesson for a diagnosis

Bring a marked script. The session should end with named topics: the mole calculations are the gap, the command words are costing a mark per question, the practical paper has never been practised. That list is the plan. Enthusiasm with no named topics is not.

  4. 04

    Buy the practical-paper block early

Four to six sessions on scale reading, variables, anomalies and method writing. It applies across all three sciences at once, which makes it the most efficient block on any route, and it is the part schools most often leave to assumption.

  5. 05

Draft the resit plan before results day

Which subject, at which tier, and on what evidence. A November entry has to be made shortly after June results arrive, and families who decide in advance make a decision while families who do not make a scramble.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the route, not the word 'science'

0620, 0625, 0610, 0653, 0654, 4CH1, 4PH1, 4BI1, 4SD0 and 4SC0 are different qualifications with different depth and different papers. The match is built from the code on the statement of entry.

You get the verification questions

Four questions published on this page that test whether a tutor knows your child's variant, with the strong and weak answers written out. They cost nothing to ask inside a free lesson, of any tutor in this market including ours.

The practical paper is taught as a skill

Scale precision, variable identification, anomaly explanation and method as procedure, drilled on real question types. It is examinable, it cuts across all three sciences, and it is the most reliably neglected part of IGCSE science support.

Honest advice on three sciences or one

On a combined route, one tutor across all three strands is right and cheaper. On triple separate sciences, a specialist for the subject in trouble beats a generalist for all three. Funding three weekly slots is usually paying for coverage rather than diagnosis.

Market rates published with their sources

Every AED band here is attributed to the provider that published it, with a date. Three of the six most visible competitors in this market publish no price and two quote US dollars.

The delivery limit is stated upfront

Lessons are one-to-one and online on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are offered only in India. If presence in the room is the requirement, this is not the right service.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Satwa: your questions answered

How can an Al Satwa parent check which IGCSE science route their child is sitting?+

Email the school office and ask three things: which science route, which syllabus codes, and which tier where tiering applies. The answer is printed on the statement of entry issued for the series. You are likely to hear one of Cambridge separate sciences (0620, 0625, 0610), Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences double award (0654), Cambridge Combined Science single award (0653), or the Pearson equivalents — 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4BI1 separately, 4SD0 double or 4SC0 single. Write the answer down; it determines which past papers are the right practice material.

Co-ordinated Sciences or three separate sciences - what actually changes for my child?+

Content depth and the number of grades. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences (0654) is a double award covering all three sciences at reduced depth relative to the separate syllabuses, and the paper structure differs accordingly. Separate sciences (0620, 0625, 0610) go deeper in each subject and produce three distinct grades. Neither is better in the abstract; what matters is which one the school entered your child for, because a tutor drilling separate-science questions with a double-award candidate is preparing for a harder and wider exam than the one being sat.

Can one tutor really cover chemistry, physics and biology?+

On a combined or double-award route, yes, and it is the right arrangement — the content is reduced and coherent across the strands, and it is one slot to schedule rather than three. On a triple separate-science route, equal depth in all three is uncommon, and paying one generalist to cover all three is usually worse value than paying a specialist for the subject the diagnosis names. Rotating a single slot by diagnosis — chemistry this term, physics next — costs far less than three weekly commitments and addresses the actual gap.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper and why does it cost so many marks?+

Cambridge includes it for candidates not sitting a laboratory examination, and it tests a distinct set of skills rather than content: reading a scale to the right precision, naming independent, dependent and control variables, explaining an anomaly by mechanism, suggesting an improvement that addresses the stated weakness, and writing a method as a numbered procedure. Students who know the science fluently lose marks here because nobody taught the paper. Four to six sessions on the question types usually flips it, and the block applies across all three sciences at once.

My son knows the biology and still gets 5s. What is he doing wrong?+

Most likely answering 'what' when the question asks 'why'. Extended-tier biology awards marks for a written chain of reasoning, and students who describe what a graph shows without explaining the mechanism lose the upper band consistently. Osmosis, enzyme activity and transport in plants all reward logic put on paper rather than held in the head. The second common cause is command words: state, describe, explain, suggest and compare each need a different response shape, and a student who answers every question in the same register leaves marks on every paper.

Which topic loses the most marks in IGCSE physics?+

Electricity, and specifically the explanation questions rather than the calculations. Marks are awarded for a chain of reasoning — the resistance rises, so the current falls, so the reading on the ammeter drops — and students who know the outcome write the conclusion and skip the chain the mark scheme is paying for. Series and parallel questions reward drawing the circuit before calculating anything. Moments and the distinction between distance-time and velocity-time graphs follow close behind, and both are convention and arithmetic problems rather than conceptual ones.

Does it matter whether my daughter's school uses Cambridge or Pearson for science?+

It matters for practice material, not for quality. Formula and data provision differs between the boards, which changes what has to be memorised. Paper structures differ. Some Pearson subjects operate modular assessment where units can be sat across series, which changes whether support should be spread or concentrated before each unit. The board is chosen by the school rather than by you, so the task is simply to establish which it is and confirm the tutor's past papers match. A tutor who shrugs at the board question will hand your child the wrong papers.

How much does an IGCSE science tutor cost in Dubai right now?+

Market figures as of October 2026: budget online runs about AED 33 to 65 an hour, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. A qualified online subject tutor sits at AED 150 to 300, Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase listing AED 270. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 including travel. Those belong to the providers named, not to IB Gram; here the first lesson is free, so the diagnosis costs nothing before anything is priced.

Is there any point tutoring science online when the practicals happen at school?+

The laboratory belongs to the school and nobody should suggest otherwise. What online support does is handle the part that carries the marks: preparing the student for the session — variables, precision, repeats — and then working with the data the student actually collected. For Cambridge candidates it also covers the alternative-to-practical paper, which is examinable technique rather than hands-on work and which is the single largest neglected mark pool in IGCSE science. A shared screen with a past-paper question on it is genuinely the right tool for that.

Does IB Gram send a science tutor to a home in Al Satwa?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. Sessions for Al Satwa families are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared screen so diagrams, calculations and past-paper questions are visible and annotated. The trade is explicit: you lose a person in the room and gain a tutor matched to your child's exact syllabus code. Given how many distinct science routes exist, that match matters more in this subject than in most.

What time can a science lesson start for a Satwa family?+

Around 17:00 for the Oud Metha, Al Mankhool and Jumeirah runs, and 18:00 for Al Safa, Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim. Al Satwa has almost no secondary schools inside it, so every child commutes, and looping bus routes regularly turn a 15:00 finish into a 16:15 arrival. Set the slot at least forty-five minutes after the latest arrival you have actually seen in the past fortnight. A time chosen from the published school finish slips by fifteen minutes a week and disappears by the third month.

When should we decide about a November resit in science?+

Before June results arrive, not after. A November entry has to be made shortly after results day, which is exactly when a household is least organised, so the decision gets made under time pressure or missed entirely. Draft it in advance: which subject, at which tier, and on what evidence from the mocks and the school's own assessments. Pearson's November 2026 timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, so a resit shifts the whole timeline into the following year.

What is a Cambridge exam zone and does it affect science papers?+

It affects every Cambridge paper, science included. Cambridge allocates each exam centre to one of six administrative zones and the timetable differs by zone. Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. That is a serious, entirely avoidable risk sitting behind one question to the school office. Ask which zone the centre is in, write it down, and read that zone's timetable rather than the first one a search returns.

Do science grades count towards UAE equivalency, and how many do I need?+

On the British track, Ministry of Education equivalency requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. Sciences can sit inside that count, but how a double award is treated against three separate grades should be checked against the authority's own guidance rather than assumed. One ranking competitor publishes a six-subject requirement; the sourced rule is five. Equivalency is an official process, not something a tutoring provider performs or guarantees.

Should I be looking for a KHDA-approved science tutor?+

No, because that credential does not exist for individuals. KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai: it inspects schools and issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises. It does not accredit individual private tutors, so the phrase should make you cautious about whoever used it. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge accreditation and claims none. What does exist is the MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is free for two years and which you can ask to see.

What if no tutor is available for my child's exact science route?+

You should be told, not quietly matched. Separate-science specialists at Extended tier are the widest pool; double and single award routes are narrower, because fewer tutors have deliberately taught the reduced-depth specifications rather than simply delivering separate-science content at them. The honest choices are a short wait for the right person, a different weekly slot that opens a wider pool, or a tutor outside the UAE working on Gulf Standard Time for the same code. A mismatch on route is invisible for six weeks and costs a term.

Get the code first, then get the tutor

One email to the school office decides whether science tutoring works for your child or quietly wastes a term. Ask which route, which codes and which tier, and write the answer down. Then take the free first lesson, bring a marked script, and ask the tutor to show you the past paper they are working from so you can check the code on it matches. That thirty-second check catches the most common and most expensive mismatch in IGCSE science support. Lessons for Al Satwa families are one-to-one and delivered live online on Gulf Standard Time. Market rates quoted here belong to the providers named beside them.
