IB Physics Tutor in Al Furjan

Finding an IB physics tutor in Al Furjan means finding someone who teaches the current syllabus, not a remembered version of it. IB Physics is now organised into five themes, Paper 1 splits into multiple choice and a data-based section, and the Scientific Investigation carries twenty per cent on its own. IB Gram matches by subject and level, then teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Tutors working to the current five-theme Physics syllabus
  • Separate work on Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 demands
  • Scientific Investigation support on the student's own work only

IB & IGCSE in Al Furjan

The syllabus a physics tutor needs to be teaching

Physics is the Diploma subject where an out-of-date tutor is hardest to spot. The content looks familiar from any era of physics teaching, so a tutor who learned the previous syllabus can talk confidently through mechanics and electricity while missing the structure the current course is built on. IB Physics is organised into five themes, and the assessment splits Paper 1 into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section that is effectively a separate skill.

The second thing a parent needs to know is where the marks are. The Scientific Investigation, the internally assessed report, carries twenty per cent of the final grade on its own, with a word limit of three thousand words. A student can know the physics well and lose a fifth of the grade on a report written in a fortnight. Across a cohort, that single component moves more grades than any topic.

The third is that physics marks are lost mathematically rather than conceptually. Uncertainty propagation, gradient interpretation, unit handling and logarithmic treatment of data account for more lost marks than any individual theme. These are teachable in a handful of sessions and they appear in every paper, which makes them the highest-return work available in the subject and the work most often skipped in favour of revisiting topics that feel difficult.

Al Furjan complicates the supply side. The community is residential, sitting between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Yalayis Road, and Dubai's Diploma physics teachers work near the schools that run the programme. In the Jebel Ali and Dubai South corridor those schools are fewer than in Al Barsha, Al Khail or Jumeirah, so the pool of people who will drive into the villa districts for a 17:00 session is small, and Physics Higher Level narrows it further.

IB Gram removes the drive. Every UAE lesson runs one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time between 15:30 and 21:30, and no tutor attends a UAE address; home visiting is a service we offer only in India. For a subject where the required specialism is this narrow, that trade favours the wider pool heavily: a Masakin family gets a Higher Level physics specialist rather than whoever is twenty minutes away.

On dates: UAE schools sit the Diploma in the May session. We do not publish specific IB exam or results dates anywhere on this site, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unverified date in front of a parent who acts on it is worse than no date. Your child's Diploma coordinator holds the school's internal deadlines, including the Scientific Investigation submission, and that calendar is the one to ask for in September. Cambridge and Pearson publish their own timetables and those are used elsewhere on this site with sources attached, which is the difference between a date we can stand behind and one we cannot.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics arrives in stages, and the handovers are where confidence breaks. These are the stages an Al Furjan family passes through on the way to the Diploma.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme sciences

Sciences are assessed against criteria A to D on an eight-point scale, with criterion D on reflecting on the impacts of science and criterion C on processing and evaluating being the two that consistently cost marks. Physics content at this stage is thin compared with what the Diploma expects, so the preparation that matters is graph work, uncertainty language and writing a method with controlled variables named.

Middle Years students in Al Furjan are home between 15:40 and 16:30 depending on the route, so a 17:00 session fits. The useful work at this stage is not more physics content but the processing skills the Diploma assumes: plotting properly, reading gradients from a line rather than from points, and stating uncertainty. Those skills transfer to every science the student later takes.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Physics

Five themes covering motion, the particulate nature of matter, wave behaviour, fields, and nuclear and quantum physics, with Higher Level going deeper across all of them rather than adding separate topics. Assessment is Paper 1, split into multiple choice and data-based sections, Paper 2 with short and extended response, and the Scientific Investigation at twenty per cent.

Diploma students from Al Furjan travel to the Al Barsha or Al Khail corridor for school, so they are home closer to 17:00 and book 18:00 or 19:00 physics sessions. Higher Level Physics is one of the scarcer specialisms in this part of Dubai, which is the main practical reason families here end up with a tutor one level below the one their child sits.

IADiploma 1 into Diploma 2

The Scientific Investigation

A single independent investigation reported in up to three thousand words, assessed against four criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. It is worth twenty per cent of the grade at both levels. The research question and the quality of the data collected decide most of the mark, and both are fixed long before the report is written.

This is where Al Furjan families most often ask for help late. A weak research question cannot be rescued by good writing, so the highest-value session is the earliest one. Tutors read the criteria with the student, question the design, teach the uncertainty and graphing treatment the data needs, and give written feedback on the student's own drafts. No part of the report is written by the tutor.

BRIDGESummer after Year 11

From IGCSE Physics into the Diploma

IGCSE Physics builds recall and single-step calculation. Diploma Physics expects algebraic rearrangement under pressure, uncertainty propagation, logarithmic data treatment and extended written explanation. The gap is mathematical and procedural rather than conceptual, which means it closes quickly with targeted work and slowly with general revision.

Families in this corridor usually change schools for the Diploma, since full Diploma provision nearby is limited. Arriving with the mathematics already fluent removes one of the three things a student is otherwise juggling in the first term. Four to six summer sessions on rearrangement, graphs and uncertainty is the normal size of this block and the best value in the sequence.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics shares its demands with several other Diploma subjects, and families in this corridor often need more than one covered. These are the components and neighbouring subjects we are asked about most.

Physics HL

Higher Level

The five themes at greater depth, with the additional demand being sustained quantitative reasoning rather than extra topics. Extended response questions in Paper 2 reward explanation built from a named principle, and students who describe what happens without naming the physics that causes it score consistently below their understanding.

Physics SL

Standard Level

The same five themes with reduced depth and the same Scientific Investigation at twenty per cent. The commonest problem at Standard Level is treating it as a lighter subject: the data-based and uncertainty demands are identical in kind, and they are where most Standard Level marks are lost.

Paper 1A: multiple choice

SL and HL

Rewards speed and recognition, and punishes a student who works every question algebraically. The skill is knowing which questions to reason through and which to eliminate, and that is practised by doing timed sets rather than by learning more content.

Paper 1B: data-based questions

SL and HL

Effectively a separate examination of experimental skill: reading instruments, processing data, plotting, interpreting gradients and intercepts, and handling uncertainty. Students revise themes and neglect this section, which is why it is the most reliably recoverable set of marks in the subject.

Paper 2: short and extended response

SL and HL

Carries the larger share of the written marks and rewards structured explanation. Command terms decide the shape of the answer: describe, explain, outline and discuss each require something different, and a well-informed answer to the wrong command earns little.

The Scientific Investigation

SL and HL

Up to three thousand words, twenty per cent of the grade, assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The research question and the data decide the mark. Evaluation is the criterion students treat as a list of apologies rather than a critical assessment of the method's limits.

Uncertainties and error analysis

SL and HL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through calculations, and uncertainty bars on graphs. It appears in Paper 1B, in Paper 2 and throughout the investigation, which makes it the single highest-return topic in the subject and one many students never systematically learn.

Graph and gradient work

SL and HL

Linearising a relationship, choosing axes that make a gradient meaningful, reading gradients from a line of best fit rather than from plotted points, and interpreting intercepts physically. Taught properly in two sessions and worth marks in every component.

Mathematics for Physics

Supporting both levels

Rearrangement, indices, logarithms, small-angle approximations and trigonometry. Students who understand physics but are slow algebraically often need mathematics support rather than more physics, and diagnosing which of the two is the actual problem takes one session with a marked paper.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Frequently taken alongside Physics and sharing the same investigation structure and uncertainty demands. Families often arrange both, and where one tutor genuinely covers both to the level needed that is efficient; where they do not, two specialists beat one generalist.

Extended Essay in Physics

Core

Four thousand words of supervised independent research. Physics essays fail on feasibility more than on ambition: a question requiring equipment the student cannot access produces a literature review rather than an investigation. That is diagnosable in one early session.

Theory of Knowledge and the natural sciences

Core

Students taking Higher Level Physics are often asked to write about scientific knowledge, and generic claims about the scientific method score poorly. A physics tutor's useful contribution is supplying real examples from the course that can carry a knowledge argument.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Physics support divides cleanly by what is being fixed. These are the three patterns Al Furjan families use, and the thing each one is for.

Weekly session on the current theme

One sixty-minute session a week working on the theme the school is teaching, with ten minutes of uncertainty or graph work in every session regardless of topic. The constant processing work is deliberate: those skills are examined in every component, and a student who meets them only during the investigation meets them too late.

  • Matched to Higher or Standard Level, confirmed before the trial
  • Built around the school's own set work and marked assessments
  • Uncertainty and graph practice in every session
  • Written note after each lesson naming what to practise

Component drilling before mocks

Two shorter sessions a week from the mock window, with Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 treated as three separate preparations. Timed multiple-choice sets for 1A, data-processing work for 1B, and structured extended responses marked against command terms for Paper 2. Mixing them in one revision block is why generic revision underperforms.

  • Paper 1A practised as timed sets, not worked algebraically
  • Paper 1B treated as experimental skill, not theme revision
  • Paper 2 answers marked against the command term used
  • Defined block of weeks with an end date

Scientific Investigation block

Four to six sessions attached to the investigation, starting with the research question and the design rather than the write-up. The tutor reads the four criteria with the student, questions the method, teaches the uncertainty and graphical treatment the data needs, and gives written feedback on the student's own drafts. Nothing is written by the tutor.

  • Research question interrogated before any data is collected
  • Criteria read against the student's own draft, strand by strand
  • Feedback given in writing so the school can see the support
  • No drafting, rewriting or supplied analysis at any stage

Summer bridge from IGCSE Physics

Four to six sessions between Year 11 and Diploma 1 on the mathematical and procedural gap: rearrangement under pressure, uncertainty propagation, linearising a relationship, and writing an explanation that names the principle. Particularly useful for students also changing school for the Diploma, which most in this corridor do.

  • Starts from the student's actual IGCSE paper performance
  • Mathematical fluency first, physics content second
  • Runs over the UAE summer when availability is widest
  • Removes one variable from a difficult first term

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Furjan

01

The five themes, and what Higher Level actually adds

The current IB Physics syllabus is organised into five themes rather than a numbered topic list, and the organisation matters because it changes how the course is taught and revised. The themes cover space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. A tutor who talks about topic numbers from an older guide is working from a structure the school no longer uses, which makes their revision planning unreliable.

Higher Level does not bolt on a separate list of extra topics. It goes deeper within the same five themes, and the additional demand is sustained quantitative reasoning: longer chains of algebra, more unfamiliar contexts, and extended written explanations that have to be built from a named principle rather than described. That is why a Standard Level specialist stretched to Higher Level often teaches the content adequately and the assessment poorly.

The practical consequence for revision is that cross-theme skills matter more than theme coverage. Energy appears in every theme. Field concepts recur. Graphical relationships and proportionality run throughout. A revision plan built theme by theme in isolation produces a student who can answer a question about waves and cannot answer a question that uses wave behaviour inside a different context, which is what the papers actually do.

A useful test of a physics tutor is to ask them to name the themes and then ask what Higher Level adds. Someone teaching the current course answers immediately and talks about depth rather than extra content. Someone working from memory of a previous syllabus will describe additional higher-level topics, which is the wrong shape for this course.

Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 are three different examinations

Physics revision usually treats the written papers as one thing with a shared body of knowledge. The assessment does not work that way. Paper 1 splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, and those two sections test entirely different competencies. Paper 2 then tests structured written explanation. A student can be strong in one and weak in another, and a plan that does not separate them cannot address that.

The multiple-choice section rewards speed and recognition. A student who works every question through algebraically runs out of time, and the fix is practice in timed sets with explicit attention to elimination and estimation. It is also the section where a reliably strong student can lose marks to carelessness rather than ignorance, which is a different intervention from learning more physics.

The data-based section is, in effect, a written practical examination. It asks for instrument reading, data processing, plotting, gradient and intercept interpretation, and uncertainty handling. Students revise the five themes and leave this section to chance, which is why it is the most recoverable set of marks in the subject. Four sessions of pure data work typically moves more marks than four sessions on any theme.

Paper 2 is where command terms decide the outcome. Describe, explain, outline, discuss and compare each require a different answer shape, and a knowledgeable answer to the wrong command earns little. The practical remedy is writing answers and having them marked against the command used, which is slower work than going through content and the reason many tutors avoid it.

Uncertainties and graphs: the marks almost nobody drills

  • Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, and propagation rules
  • Significant figures justified by the uncertainty, not by habit
  • Gradients read from the line of best fit, never from plotted points
  • Axes chosen to linearise, with intercepts interpreted physically

If a family in Al Furjan could buy only four physics sessions, uncertainties and graph work would be the right purchase. The reasoning is straightforward: these skills are examined in the data-based section, reappear in Paper 2, and carry a substantial share of the Scientific Investigation's analysis and evaluation marks. No individual theme has that reach, and no individual theme is as quickly fixable.

The specific competencies are narrow. Distinguishing absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty. Propagating uncertainty through addition, multiplication and powers. Deciding how many significant figures a result can honestly carry. Drawing uncertainty bars and using them to judge whether a relationship is supported. Each of those is a rule with a worked example behind it, not a concept requiring insight.

Graph work is similar. Choosing axes that linearise a relationship so a gradient means something. Reading a gradient from a line of best fit rather than from two plotted points, which is the single most common graph error across every science. Interpreting an intercept physically rather than as a number. Recognising when a log plot is the honest way to display data. All teachable, all examined, all frequently skipped.

Why it gets skipped is worth saying. These skills do not feel like physics to a student, and they do not produce the satisfying sensation of understanding a hard topic. A tutor who works from a marked paper rather than from the student's sense of difficulty will prioritise them, which is one of the clearest differences between a specialist and a generalist in this subject.

04

The Scientific Investigation, criterion by criterion

The Scientific Investigation is a single report of up to three thousand words, worth twenty per cent of the Physics grade at both levels, assessed against four criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Its share of the grade is larger than most families realise and its outcome is decided earlier than most students realise, because the research question and the quality of the data collected constrain everything that follows.

Research design is where marks are won or lost before any writing. The question needs a measurable dependent variable, a controllable independent variable, a realistic range of values, and enough repeats to say something. Questions that fail are usually too broad, or depend on equipment the student cannot access, or produce data with so much scatter that no relationship can be claimed. One early session on the design prevents all three.

Data analysis is where the uncertainty and graph work from the previous section pays for itself directly. Processing raw data correctly, propagating uncertainty, plotting with uncertainty bars, and extracting a gradient that answers the research question is the whole of this criterion. Conclusion then asks for an answer to the question, justified by the data and compared with accepted physics, which is a different task from restating the results.

Evaluation is the criterion students treat as a confession. A list of apologies about imprecise equipment scores poorly. What the criterion asks for is a critical assessment of the method's limitations, with specific improvements that would address specific weaknesses, and an honest statement of what the data can and cannot support. That shift in framing is worth several marks and takes one session to explain.

How much of a physics problem is actually a maths problem

  • Rearrangement, indices, logs and trigonometry are routine physics demands
  • One session with a marked paper separates maths from physics problems
  • Analysis and Approaches students arrive with the fluency assumed
  • Treating an algebra problem with more physics teaching wastes months

A regular diagnosis in this subject is that the student understands the physics and cannot execute the mathematics fast enough. Rearranging a relationship with the unknown in the denominator, handling indices and standard form under time pressure, using logarithms to linearise, applying small-angle approximations, and manipulating trigonometric expressions are all routine demands in Diploma Physics, and all of them are mathematics rather than physics.

Distinguishing the two takes one session with a marked paper. If the student can explain what is happening physically and then stalls on the algebra, the intervention is mathematical. If the algebra is fluent and the explanation is vague, the intervention is conceptual. Treating a mathematical problem with more physics teaching is a common and expensive error, because the student keeps being taught things they already understand.

This is where the IB mathematics course choice interacts with physics. Students taking Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches meet the algebraic and calculus demands in their maths lessons and arrive at physics with the fluency assumed. Students taking Applications and Interpretation may be excellent mathematicians in a different register and need the manipulation practised separately. Neither is wrong; they are different support needs.

The practical answer for an Al Furjan family is to ask which problem they are buying help for. Where one tutor genuinely covers both physics and the required mathematics to the level needed, that is efficient and we will say so. Where they do not, two specialists outperform one generalist, and pretending otherwise to keep a single booking would be dishonest.

06

Is there a Higher Level physics specialist near Al Furjan?

  • A small local pool means taking the available tutor, not the right level
  • Higher Level gaps show up first on extended response and uncertainties
  • Matching is by subject and level, confirmed before the trial
  • January and February are the tightest weeks for evening slots

The honest answer is that there may be and you should not plan around it. Al Furjan is residential, and Dubai's Diploma physics teachers work near the schools that run the programme, which in the Jebel Ali and Dubai South corridor are fewer than further north. Add the requirement of Higher Level specifically, in a fixed evening slot, within a reasonable drive, and the pool reduces to a handful of people who are generally already committed.

What happens next is predictable. A family takes the nearest competent science tutor and hopes the level difference does not matter. At Standard Level it sometimes does not. At Higher Level it shows within two sessions, usually on extended response marking or on uncertainty propagation, because teaching those well requires having taught them before to this assessment rather than knowing the physics.

Online matching replaces the map with a calendar, and that is the entire argument on a page like this one. IB Gram matches by subject and level and delivers one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time between 15:30 and 21:30. No tutor attends a UAE address, since home visiting is an India-only service. For a specialism this narrow, the wider pool wins by a distance.

Where we cannot cover a request we say so. Physics at both levels is reasonably well covered across the UAE set and usually matched within a few days, though availability tightens in January and February when every Diploma 2 family in Dubai is looking for the same evening slots. The free trial is the test: bring a marked Paper 2 and ask what pattern connects the lost marks.

07

Academic honesty in a subject with an internally assessed report

  • A tutor questions the design and teaches technique; the student does the work
  • No writing, rewriting, data processing or supplied analysis
  • Feedback in writing so the school can see the nature of the support
  • Official documents cited and linked, never reproduced

Twenty per cent of the Physics grade sits in a document the student produces at home, which makes the boundary on help more than a formality. At least one provider in this market advertises completed internal assessments at a fixed price. If a student submits a report they did not produce, the IB treats it as malpractice and the Diploma is what is at risk, not the seller's revenue. That asymmetry is the reason to be explicit.

The legitimate territory is wide and worth using. A tutor may read the four criteria with the student and explain what each rewards, question the research question and the method design until they are workable, teach the uncertainty and graphical techniques the data requires, show how a published paper structures an analysis, and give written feedback on the student's own drafts against each criterion. Most of the recoverable marks are inside that list.

What a tutor may not do is write or rewrite the report, process the student's data for them, supply the analysis, or outline the document for the student to fill in. IB Gram tutors state that boundary at the first session of any investigation block and give feedback in writing, so a school asking what support was received gets an answer that stands up. Parents should expect that from any tutor in this subject.

Two related limits. We do not reproduce or distribute IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; they are cited and linked, and sessions work from what the school has issued. And we do not describe tutors as IB examiners without evidence of current status, nor use examiner status to imply access to marking, boundaries or paper content, because it gives no such access.

Where we tutor

Al Furjan and the corridor its physics students travel

These communities share Al Furjan's school routes and its thin local supply of Diploma physics specialists. Session times quoted here apply across the corridor.

Al Furjan

Villa and townhouse districts with two Route 2020 metro stations. Diploma students travel north for school, so physics sessions here usually start at 18:00 or later on weekdays.

Discovery Gardens

Apartments immediately north on the same routes. Physics works well online from a shared space, since a session needs a screen for graphs and shared working rather than a quiet room for discussion.

Dubai Investments Park

Holds several schools Al Furjan children attend, including IB continuum provision. Students here have the shortest run and the earliest workable physics session in the corridor.

Jebel Ali

Established schools south of Al Furjan. Free zone working hours push sessions to 19:00, a slot no visiting tutor will reliably take after crossing Dubai in evening traffic.

Dubai South and Emaar South

The newest districts, furthest from the city's specialist supply and with the longest bus runs. Higher Level physics demand here outpaces the local pool noticeably.

Green Community

Inside Dubai Investments Park, minutes from school, with the earliest practical start at around 15:50. Useful for Middle Years science work before dinner.

Dubai Production City

Townhouses and apartments along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, closer to the Al Barsha corridor where several full Diploma schools sit, so travel home is shorter.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level and the component

Physics Higher Level, Diploma 2, losing marks on Paper 2 extended response and on uncertainty propagation, investigation due in February. Add the earliest time your child is at the desk after the Al Furjan bus, since that decides which specialists are genuinely available.

  2. 02

We match by level and name the tutor

You are told who will teach, whether they work to the current five-theme syllabus, and whether they have marked Scientific Investigations before. If we cannot match Higher Level we say so rather than offering a Standard Level tutor and letting you discover the gap.

  3. 03

Free trial with a marked paper on screen

Bring a marked Paper 1B or Paper 2 and ask what pattern connects the lost marks. A specialist names behaviours: describing instead of naming the principle, gradients read from points, uncertainty omitted. A topic answer tells you nothing useful. No payment is taken for the trial.

  4. 04

Set the weekly slot and the processing routine

Agree a slot that survives a late bus and a fixture, usually 18:00 or later for Diploma students here. Then build ten minutes of uncertainty or graph work into every session from week one, rather than meeting those skills for the first time during the investigation.

  5. 05

    Schedule the investigation block early

If the Scientific Investigation is coming, the design session belongs months before the deadline, because a weak research question cannot be rescued by good writing. Four to six sessions covers criteria, design, technique and written feedback on the student's own drafts.

  6. 06

    Split the components before mocks

From the mock window, Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 are prepared separately: timed multiple-choice sets, pure data work, and written answers marked against command terms. Usually two shorter sessions a week, returning to one afterwards.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Tutors on the current syllabus

IB Physics runs on five themes, with Higher Level adding depth rather than extra topics. A tutor working from an older guide plans revision against a structure the school no longer uses, and that is hard for a parent to detect without asking directly.

The data-based section treated as its own exam

Paper 1B is effectively a written practical: instrument reading, processing, plotting, gradients and uncertainty. It is the most recoverable set of marks in the subject and the part students leave to chance while revising themes.

Twenty per cent protected on time

The Scientific Investigation is worth twenty per cent and is decided by the research question and the data, both fixed long before the writing. We schedule the design session months early rather than arriving for the write-up.

Maths and physics problems told apart

Much of what looks like a physics difficulty is algebraic execution under time pressure. One session with a marked paper distinguishes them, which stops a family paying for physics teaching the student does not need.

A pool wider than the driving radius

Higher Level physics is one of the scarcer specialisms in the Jebel Ali corridor. Online delivery replaces the map with a calendar, so an Al Furjan family is choosing on level and component rather than on who is twenty minutes away.

A stated boundary, in writing

Tutors question the design, teach technique and give written feedback on the student's own drafts. They do not write reports, process data or supply analysis. Where completed internal assessments are sold in this market, that boundary protects the Diploma.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Furjan: your questions answered

How is IB Physics organised now, and why does it matter for choosing a tutor?+

The current syllabus runs on five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level goes deeper within those themes rather than adding a separate topic list. It matters because a tutor working from an older guide plans revision against a structure the school no longer uses. Ask a tutor to name the themes and say what Higher Level adds. Someone teaching the current course answers immediately and talks about depth rather than extra content.

What is Paper 1B and why do students lose marks on it?+

Paper 1 splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, and the data-based section is effectively a written practical examination. It asks for instrument reading, data processing, plotting, gradient and intercept interpretation, and uncertainty handling. Students lose marks there because they revise the five themes and leave experimental skill to chance. That makes it the most recoverable set of marks in the subject: four sessions of pure data work usually moves more marks than four sessions on any single theme.

How much is the IB Physics Scientific Investigation worth?+

Twenty per cent of the final grade at both Standard and Higher Level, reported in up to three thousand words and assessed against four criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Its outcome is largely settled before the writing starts, because the research question and the quality of the data constrain every criterion that follows. A question that is too broad, or that needs equipment the student cannot access, cannot be rescued by good prose in the final fortnight.

What does the Evaluation criterion actually want?+

A critical assessment of the method's limitations, with specific improvements addressing specific weaknesses, and an honest statement of what the data can and cannot support. What students write instead is a list of apologies about imprecise equipment, which scores poorly because it identifies problems without analysing their effect or proposing a real fix. Reframing it from confession to critique is worth several marks and takes about one session to explain properly, which is why it belongs early in an investigation block.

If we could only buy four physics sessions, what should they cover?+

Uncertainties and graph work. Those skills are examined in the data-based section, reappear in Paper 2, and carry a substantial share of the investigation's analysis and evaluation marks, so their reach is wider than any single theme. The specific competencies are narrow and rule-based: absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through calculations, significant figures justified by the uncertainty, uncertainty bars, and reading a gradient from the line of best fit rather than from two plotted points.

Is my child's problem physics or maths?+

One session with a marked paper will tell you. If they can explain what is happening physically and then stall on rearranging the relationship, the problem is mathematical: indices, standard form, logarithms, trigonometry and algebra under time pressure are routine demands in this course. If the algebra is fluent and the explanations are vague, the problem is conceptual. Treating a mathematical difficulty with more physics teaching is common and expensive, because the student keeps being retaught things they already understand.

Why does my child lose Paper 2 marks when the physics is right?+

Because command terms set the shape of the answer and a knowledgeable answer to the wrong command earns little. Describe, explain, outline, discuss and compare each require something different, and the commonest loss is describing what happens without naming the principle that causes it. The remedy is writing answers and having them marked against the command term used, then rewriting once. It is slower work than going through content, which is why many tutors avoid it and why it moves grades.

How hard is Physics Higher Level compared with Standard Level?+

The difference is sustained quantitative reasoning rather than extra topics, since Higher Level deepens the same five themes. Longer chains of algebra, more unfamiliar contexts, and extended explanations built from a named principle are the added demands. A Standard Level specialist stretched to Higher Level often teaches the content adequately and the assessment poorly, and the gap shows within two sessions, usually on extended response marking or on uncertainty propagation rather than on any particular theme.

What should an Al Furjan student do in the summer before Diploma Physics?+

Close the mathematical and procedural gap, not the content gap. IGCSE Physics builds recall and single-step calculation; the Diploma expects rearrangement under pressure, uncertainty propagation, linearising a relationship and extended written explanation. Four to six sessions on those removes one of the three things a student is otherwise juggling in the first term. That matters here because families in this corridor usually change schools for the Diploma, so a new school and a new teaching style arrive at the same time.

Who decides the research question if a tutor is involved in the investigation?+

A tutor can question the design, which is different from producing it. The legitimate work is reading the four criteria with the student, interrogating the research question until it is measurable and feasible, teaching the uncertainty and graphical techniques the data will need, showing how published work structures an analysis, and giving written feedback on the student's own drafts. A tutor may not write the report, process the data, supply the analysis or outline it for the student to complete. That boundary is stated at the first session.

Which physics topics cause the most trouble in Dubai cohorts?+

Fields and wave behaviour, for different reasons. In fields, potential and field strength get used interchangeably, which is a definitional problem rather than a conceptual one and responds to careful definitional work before any problems. In waves, phase difference and path difference are confused, and diagram-first explanations fix it faster than more formulae. Nuclear and quantum physics is usually recalled confidently and handled weakly quantitatively, so it needs calculation practice with exponentials rather than more reading.

When can a physics session start for a Diploma student living in Al Furjan?+

Usually 18:00, and 19:00 on a day with a sports fixture or a CAS commitment. Diploma students from this community mostly travel to the Al Barsha or Al Khail corridor for school, so they are not home before 16:30 and often later. Children at Dubai Investments Park or Green Community schools are home by 15:40 and can start at 15:50, which suits Middle Years science work. Sessions run to 21:30 Gulf Standard Time, and a missed session moves to the next evening rather than the next week.

Are the IB physics exam dates listed anywhere on this site?+

No, and that is deliberate. UAE schools sit the Diploma in the May session and we write about that session, but we do not publish specific IB exam or results dates because the IB's own site blocks automated checking, and an unverified date in front of a parent who acts on it is worse than no date at all. Your child's Diploma coordinator holds the school's internal calendar, including the Scientific Investigation deadline, and that is the document to ask for in September.

Can the same tutor cover physics and chemistry for a Higher Level student?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. The two subjects share an investigation structure and the same uncertainty and graphing demands, so a tutor strong in experimental skill transfers usefully between them. What does not transfer is subject-specific assessment experience: marking a chemistry energetics answer and marking a physics fields answer are different skills. Where one tutor genuinely covers both to the level needed we will say so, and where they do not, two specialists beat one generalist.

My child says physics revision is not working. What is usually wrong?+

The plan is almost always built theme by theme, which produces a student who can answer a question about waves and cannot answer a question that uses wave behaviour inside another context. The papers do the latter. A better plan works across themes on the recurring ideas, energy, proportionality and graphical relationships, and treats Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 as three separate preparations. A tutor working from the marked mock rather than from a syllabus checklist will usually spot this in the first session.

Can you promise my child a 7 in IB Physics?+

No. We do not predict or guarantee grades in any subject, and a provider who does is selling confidence rather than teaching. What can be stated is where the marks sit and how they are typically lost: command-term errors on Paper 2, unpractised data skills on Paper 1B, uncertainty treatment missing throughout, and an investigation worth twenty per cent decided by a research question fixed too late. Working through that list on the evidence of marked work is what actually moves a physics grade.

Send the level, the component and a marked paper

An IB physics tutor in Al Furjan is worth hiring when they teach the current syllabus and the component your child is losing marks on. Send us the level, the paper or criterion in question, and the earliest time your child is at the desk after the bus. We will name a tutor, confirm whether they have marked Scientific Investigations, and run a free trial around a marked paper so you can hear the diagnosis for yourself. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time between 15:30 and 21:30. If the match is wrong after the trial, say so and nothing is owed.
