IB Physics IA Help in Dubai

IB physics IA help in Dubai, one-to-one over live video, worked through on the student's own data. The scientific investigation runs to about 3,000 words, carries roughly a fifth of the Physics grade, and is marked on four criteria of six marks each. Most of the lost marks in Dubai drafts are uncertainties recorded carefully and then never carried into the final result.

  • Uncertainty propagated from instrument to gradient to answer
  • Linearisation planned before the data is collected
  • Research design checked for range, repeats and real controls
  • The student does the physics; we question and mark the draft

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

A Physics investigation is marked on what the data can support

Every Diploma Physics student, standard or higher level, submits one scientific investigation of up to about 3,000 words. It is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The school teacher marks it and the IB moderates a sample. It is worth roughly a fifth of the Physics grade, and in a subject where the papers are unforgiving, that fifth is the most controllable part of the course.

What distinguishes Physics from the other two sciences in this task is uncertainty. A Biology investigation lives or dies on statistical treatment; a Chemistry investigation on control of chemically significant variables; a Physics investigation on whether the numbers the student reports are supported by the precision of the instruments they used. Dubai school laboratories are generally well equipped, so students collect good raw data, write instrument uncertainties correctly into the table, and then compute a gradient as though those uncertainties had disappeared.

That single fault cascades through three of the four criteria. Data analysis loses marks because the processing is incomplete without propagated uncertainty. The conclusion loses marks because a result quoted to four significant figures from data supporting two is a claim the evidence does not justify. Evaluation loses marks because the limitations discussion has no quantitative handle on what each weakness did to the answer. One missing step, three criteria affected, and it is a step that can be taught in a single session.

The second pattern is linearisation. A great many Physics investigations examine a relationship that is not linear, and the analysis that earns marks plots a transformed pair of variables so the relationship becomes a straight line whose gradient means something physical. Students who plot the raw variables and fit a curve by eye have produced a graph that looks like data and supports no quantitative conclusion. Deciding what to plot against what belongs in the planning stage, before the laboratory session, not afterwards.

Our role is narrow and technical. We check a proposed investigation will yield analysable data, teach uncertainty propagation and linearisation, read the student's own draft once per criterion and state the band each sits in, and name the next job. The student performs the experiment, processes the data and writes the report. Nothing is calculated for them and no passage is written for them, because the investigation carries an academic honesty declaration that the student signs.

Sessions run online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared screen. A Physics IA session is a spreadsheet, a graph with error bars and a propagation calculation on the same screen, annotated live, with the file staying with the student. It also means a family in Dubai gets a tutor who has supervised Physics investigations rather than whichever science tutor can reach their community by seven in the evening.

At a glance

  • Four criteria of six marks each, twenty-four in total
  • Roughly a fifth of the Physics grade at both levels
  • Uncertainty must be propagated into the gradient and the result
  • Linearisation should be decided before the laboratory session
  • Evaluation needs the effect of each limitation, not a list of them
  • About 3,000 words, teacher-marked and externally moderated
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics is assessed differently at each stage of the IB continuum, and Dubai students arrive at the Diploma investigation from several different starting points. Here is what each stage asks for.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Physics at standard or higher level, with the same scientific investigation required at both. The four criteria are identical across Physics, Chemistry and Biology, which means a family with two children in different sciences is dealing with one mark scheme. Higher level adds syllabus content and additional paper material rather than a different investigation.

Dubai Physics higher level groups are often small, sometimes four or five students, and may be taught alongside standard level for part of the timetable. The practical consequence is limited peer benchmarking on what a strong investigation looks like, and limited laboratory technician time for individual experimental setups.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences is assessed against four criteria including inquiring and designing and processing and evaluating, which rehearse the Diploma investigation closely. A student who has written MYP science investigations already understands variables, controls and the idea that an evaluation must say something specific.

Continuum schools in Dubai give students five years of criterion-marked science investigations before the Diploma, and it shows. Students arriving at Year 12 from an IGCSE Physics course have usually done practical work assessed by an examination paper rather than by writing, and the gap is in reporting rather than in physics.

CPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme

CP students taking Diploma Physics submit the same scientific investigation against the same four criteria. The difference is in the core, where a reflective project replaces TOK and the Extended Essay, and in the career-related study that sits alongside the subject courses.

The CP is a minority route in Dubai and Physics is not a common component of CP packages. Families considering it should confirm with the school which science courses are available and at which level, because the internally assessed requirement does not reduce.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Investigation topics come from the syllabus, and some areas produce analysable data far more reliably than others in a school laboratory. These are the areas Dubai Physics students use most, with what each delivers.

Simple harmonic motion

SL and HL

Pendulums and mass-spring systems give clean, repeatable timing data and a relationship that linearises neatly. The risk is that the experiment is so standard that research design marks depend entirely on the quality of the student's own refinements.

Resistivity and electrical circuits

SL and HL

Reliable data from accessible equipment, with instrument uncertainties that are easy to state and propagate. Students lose marks by ignoring heating effects, which change the quantity being measured during the measurement.

Thermal physics and specific heat capacity

SL and HL

Accessible but leaky: heat losses dominate and must be quantified rather than mentioned. An investigation that models the loss, or measures it separately, moves from a mid band to a strong one on evaluation.

Projectile and rotational motion

SL and HL

Video analysis makes this far more tractable than it once was, and frame-rate uncertainty becomes the interesting measurement problem. Needs care because repeated launches are rarely identical and that variability has to be reported honestly.

Optics, refraction and diffraction

SL and HL

Angle measurements carry large percentage uncertainties at small angles, which makes propagation genuinely consequential. A student who understands why their uncertainty blows up near zero has material for a strong evaluation.

Waves on strings and in air columns

SL and HL

Resonance experiments produce a linear relationship once the right variables are chosen, and end corrections provide a real systematic error to identify. Strong topic for demonstrating a systematic rather than random limitation.

Magnetism and induction

SL and HL

Good higher level ground with equipment most Dubai schools hold. Data tends to be noisy, which is useful: noisy data handled with proper repeats and error bars evidences better practice than clean data handled casually.

Fluid viscosity and terminal velocity

SL and HL

Sphere-drop experiments are cheap to run and give strongly non-linear relationships that reward correct linearisation. Temperature control is the hidden variable and is where control-of-variables marks are won.

Radioactivity and inverse square behaviour

SL and HL

Depends entirely on school equipment and source permissions, which vary across Dubai schools. Where available, counting statistics give a genuine reason to discuss random uncertainty quantitatively rather than qualitatively.

Solar and photovoltaic output

SL and HL

Locally relevant and well suited to Dubai conditions, with irradiance, temperature and angle all available as variables. The challenge is isolating one variable in an outdoor environment where several change at once.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Physics investigation support splits into work that has to happen before the laboratory session and work that can only happen once there is data. Getting the order wrong is what makes a block expensive.

Design and feasibility session

Before any laboratory booking. We establish the independent variable and its range, the number of repeats, the controlled variables that actually matter physically, and what will be plotted against what. Most investigations that produce unanalysable data were designed in an afternoon without those four decisions being made explicitly.

  • Independent variable range chosen to span a detectable effect
  • Repeats planned so random uncertainty can be estimated
  • Controlled variables limited to those that physically matter
  • The linearising plot decided before data collection

Uncertainty and processing session

The technical heart of the task. Instrument uncertainties, absolute and percentage conversions, propagation through sums, products and powers, uncertainty in a gradient from maximum and minimum lines, and significant figures that match the precision the data supports. One session, taught once, fixes problems across three criteria.

  • Absolute and percentage uncertainty used consistently
  • Propagation rules applied through the actual calculation
  • Gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum gradient lines
  • Significant figures reported to match the propagated uncertainty

Criterion review of the student's draft

The student submits what they wrote. We read it once per criterion, report the band each of research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation sits in, and name the single job for the next version. Errors are flagged for the student to find. Nothing is recalculated for them and no section is rewritten.

  • A band position and reason for each of the four criteria
  • Graphs checked for error bars, labels and appropriate fit
  • Conclusion checked against what the data can support
  • Written notes the student revises from alone

Evaluation rebuild

Evaluation is six marks and is the criterion most often written as a list. A short session converts a list of limitations into a quantified account of what each one did to the result and in which direction, which is what the band descriptors ask for and almost nobody supplies.

  • Each limitation given a magnitude and a direction
  • Systematic errors separated from random ones
  • Improvements that address the dominant error, not every error
  • Comparison with an accepted value, where one exists

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The four criteria and what each six marks is for

The scientific investigation is marked out of twenty-four, split evenly across four criteria. That even split is informative: a student cannot compensate for a weak conclusion with an excellent method, because each criterion is capped at six. The strategic reading is that the cheapest marks are wherever the current draft is weakest, and for Physics that is almost always data analysis or evaluation rather than research design.

Research design rewards a focused question with a justified methodology, a sensible range for the independent variable, enough repeats to estimate random uncertainty, and controls over the variables that physically matter. Data analysis rewards processing that is correct, complete and carries uncertainty. Conclusion rewards an interpretation the data supports, compared against theory or an accepted value. Evaluation rewards limitations with their actual effects and improvements that address the dominant source of error.

The word that recurs across the top bands is specific. A specific range justified by the physics rather than by convenience. A specific propagated uncertainty rather than a note that uncertainties exist. A specific comparison with a published value including percentage difference. A specific statement that heat loss reduced the measured capacity by roughly a stated proportion, rather than an observation that heat was lost.

Treat the structure below as the planning frame and confirm the current criteria and mark allocations in the Physics subject guide your child's teacher is working from. The IB publishes the authoritative version and revises it on a cycle, and where this page differs from the guide, the guide governs.

02

Propagating uncertainty so the final answer means something

This is the single most valuable technical session in Physics IA work and the one Dubai drafts most often need. The sequence is mechanical once learnt. Record each instrument's uncertainty, usually half the smallest division or the manufacturer's stated figure. Convert to percentage where the calculation involves products, quotients or powers. Combine percentages by addition for products and quotients, multiplying by the power where a quantity is raised. Convert back to an absolute uncertainty on the final answer. Then round the answer so its last digit sits where the uncertainty does.

The step students skip is the gradient. Most Physics investigations extract a physical quantity from the slope of a graph, and that gradient carries an uncertainty derived from the spread of the data, conventionally by drawing maximum and minimum gradient lines through the error bars and taking half their difference. A gradient quoted without that uncertainty cannot support a comparison with an accepted value, which is exactly what the conclusion criterion asks for.

Once the propagation is in place, three criteria improve at once. Data analysis becomes complete. The conclusion can state whether the accepted value lies inside the experimental range, which is a far stronger statement than noting that the two numbers are close. Evaluation gains a quantitative basis, because the student can say which measurement dominated the uncertainty and therefore which improvement would actually matter.

The table below sets out the common Physics measurements, their typical uncertainty sources and what propagation does to them. It is a working reference rather than a substitute for the subject guide or the school's own practical guidance.

PROPAGATING UNCERTAINTY THROUGH A TYPICAL PHYSICS INVESTIGATION
MeasurementUsual uncertainty sourceHow it propagatesWhat it changes in the write-up
Length with a metre ruleHalf the smallest division, at both endsAbsolute uncertainties add for a differenceOften the dominant term in a short-distance measurement
Time with a stopwatchHuman reaction, estimated from repeat spreadStandard deviation of repeats, not instrument resolutionJustifies timing multiple oscillations rather than one
Mass on a balanceManufacturer's stated resolutionPercentage uncertainty, usually smallRarely dominant; says so explicitly in the evaluation
Voltage and currentMeter resolution plus temperature driftPercentages add when resistance is calculatedExplains why a resistance value cannot be quoted tightly
Angle with a protractorHalf a degree, worse at small anglesPercentage grows sharply as the angle shrinksDrives the choice of angle range in the design
Gradient of a best-fit lineSpread of points relative to error barsHalf the difference of maximum and minimum gradientsMakes a comparison with an accepted value possible
03

Linearising: deciding what to plot before the laboratory session

Physics relationships are often not linear, and a curve fitted by eye supports no quantitative claim. The move that earns marks is to transform the variables so the relationship becomes a straight line, then extract the physical quantity from the gradient or the intercept. A student who decides this in the planning stage collects the right data; a student who decides it afterwards frequently discovers they measured over the wrong range or took too few points to resolve the line.

The decision is usually simple algebra. If theory predicts that a period depends on the square root of a length, plot the period squared against the length and the gradient carries the constant of interest. If a relationship is an inverse square, plot against the reciprocal of the squared distance. If the dependence is exponential, plot a logarithm and the gradient gives the exponent. Each of these turns an unconvincing curve into a line whose gradient can be compared with a theoretical prediction.

Linearising also improves evaluation, because a straight-line plot makes systematic error visible. A non-zero intercept where theory predicts the origin is direct evidence of a systematic offset, such as an end correction in a resonance tube or a zero error on an instrument. A student who can point at the intercept and name the physical cause has written a specific evaluation rather than a general one.

Students sometimes resist on the grounds that the raw graph looks more natural. Both can appear: the raw relationship as evidence of the shape, the linearised plot as the basis of the analysis. What cannot appear is a curved plot with a hand-drawn trend and a conclusion that depends on it.

LINEARISING COMMON PHYSICS RELATIONSHIPS

04

Conclusion and evaluation: the two criteria that need the same arithmetic

  • State the measured value with its propagated uncertainty
  • Say whether the accepted value falls inside that range
  • Give a percentage difference rather than a verbal impression
  • Separate random scatter from systematic offset explicitly
  • Three quantified limitations beat eight unquantified ones

A conclusion earns marks by stating what the data shows, comparing it with theory or an accepted value, and being honest about the agreement. The sentence that scores is the one that says the gradient gives a value of a stated quantity with a stated uncertainty, that the accepted value does or does not lie within that range, and what the percentage difference is. The sentence that does not score is the one that says the results support the hypothesis.

Evaluation then builds on exactly that arithmetic. If propagation has shown that one measurement contributed most of the uncertainty, the evaluation has a dominant limitation to discuss and a targeted improvement to propose. If the intercept was non-zero where theory predicted the origin, there is a systematic error to name. If the repeats scattered widely, there is a random contribution to quantify. Without the arithmetic, evaluation collapses into a list of things that could have gone better, which is the single most common weak section in Dubai Physics drafts.

Two distinctions matter and are frequently blurred. Random uncertainty shows up as scatter and is reduced by more repeats; systematic error shifts every reading in the same direction and is not reduced by repeating anything. A student who proposes more repeats as the fix for a systematic offset has misdiagnosed the problem, and the band descriptors notice. The second distinction is between a limitation and a mistake: a procedural error the student made is not a limitation of the method, and claiming it as one costs credibility.

The best evaluations are short and quantitative. Three limitations, each with an estimated magnitude and a direction of effect, and one improvement that addresses the largest, outperform a page listing eight weaknesses with no numbers. Length is not what the criterion rewards.

05

Where Dubai Physics candidates lose marks

  • Uncertainties recorded in the table and missing from the result
  • Controlled variables listed without physical justification
  • Too few data points over too narrow a range
  • A standard experiment copied with no refinement of the student's own
  • Evaluation written as a list rather than as quantified effects

Uncertainty abandonment is first and largest, for the reasons set out above. It is also the easiest to spot: a results table with a column headed uncertainty, and a conclusion with a bare number. Any family can check for that in two minutes without understanding the physics, and if it is present, the draft is leaking marks in three of the four criteria simultaneously.

Second is a research design where the controlled variables are listed but not justified. Writing that temperature was kept constant earns little; writing that temperature was kept constant because resistivity varies measurably with temperature over the range used, and stating how it was held, earns the band. Dubai laboratories are air-conditioned to a reasonably stable temperature, which is worth stating as part of the control rather than assuming.

Third is too narrow a range or too few points. Five points across a narrow span cannot establish a relationship, and no amount of careful analysis repairs that. Eight to ten well-spread values with three repeats each is the usual working minimum for a Physics investigation, and that is a design decision, made before the laboratory booking, not something to be regretted afterwards.

Fourth, and specific to this market, is topic imitation driven by thin exemplar bases. Small higher level sets and young Diploma departments mean students look online for topics, and the same four experiments recirculate. The physics is fine; the problem is that research design marks reward the student's own refinements, and a standard experiment copied wholesale gives them nothing to refine. Keeping the standard experiment and adding one genuine methodological improvement is the cheapest fix available.

06

When the school laboratory cannot support the experiment

  • Ask early what apparatus can actually be booked
  • Video analysis, thermal and electrical work need little specialist kit
  • Solar and irradiance investigations suit local conditions
  • Home-collected data is acceptable if conditions are reported fully
  • Criteria reward design and analysis, not expensive equipment

This is a real constraint in Dubai and it is rarely discussed honestly. Laboratory time for individual investigations competes with timetabled practicals, technician availability varies, and specialist apparatus such as radioactive sources or precision optics is held by some schools and not others. A student whose chosen investigation needs equipment the school does not have will discover it late unless somebody asks early.

The productive response is to design around what is available rather than to abandon rigour. Video analysis of motion requires only a phone and free software and produces data with genuinely interesting frame-rate uncertainty. Thermal experiments need no specialist kit and provide a real systematic error to model. Electrical investigations use standard laboratory supplies. Solar output work suits Dubai conditions and needs an irradiance proxy and a multimeter. None of these is a compromise in criterion terms, because the criteria reward the quality of the design and the analysis rather than the sophistication of the apparatus.

Where measurements are taken at home rather than in a school laboratory, the honest reporting of conditions becomes part of research design. Ambient temperature, surface, lighting and the exact instrument used all belong in the method. A student who reports those carefully is demonstrating better practice than one who implies laboratory conditions that did not exist.

Ask the Physics teacher two questions early in the planning: what apparatus can be booked for individual investigation work, and how many laboratory sessions a student can expect. The answers shape the topic more than interest does, and getting them in writing at the start saves a wasted month.

What Physics IA support costs in Dubai, and why it runs online

Published Dubai market rates, read in October 2026, begin at AED 33-52 at Tutopiya and AED 45-65 at EdFlik at the budget online end, rise through Unitors at AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB, TutorChase at AED 270, and Bestimate's AED 200-450 and above for specialist IB and IGCSE support, reaching AED 650 at BartyED for premium examiner-branded provision. Bestimate puts in-home visits at AED 180-350, with independent home tutors up to AED 500 once travel is priced in. These are the market's figures rather than an IB Gram price list.

Physics investigation support sits at the specialist end of that range for a specific reason: the pool of tutors who can propagate uncertainty into a gradient and judge whether an evaluation is quantitative is much smaller than the pool who can teach the Physics syllabus. Scarcity prices everywhere, and this is a genuinely scarce skill rather than a marketing distinction.

The shape of the spend is a project rather than a subscription. Four to six sessions covers most investigations: one on design and feasibility, one on uncertainty and processing, one or two criterion reviews of the student's own draft, and one evaluation rebuild. Against Bestimate's AED 1,000-2,000 a month for specialist exam-year weekly tutoring, that is a smaller and more defined commitment, and it buys marks in the component the student controls most.

IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family's address is a service we run only in India. For this task the online format is the better one on its merits. The work is a spreadsheet, a graph and a propagation calculation on a shared screen, and the annotated file stays with the student for revision. It also removes the constraint that matters most in a small higher level Physics set, which is that the person who can supervise the investigation properly may not live anywhere near your community.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Physics IA support is booked from across Dubai, and the limiting factor is usually laboratory access and higher level group size rather than the neighbourhood. These are the areas we hear from.

Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

The densest IB cluster in the emirate, with well-equipped laboratories and reasonable technician support. Requests here concentrate on uncertainty propagation and linearisation rather than on experimental design.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Established IB provision alongside British schools. Transition students from IGCSE Physics are common, and their need is learning to report an experiment rather than to perform one.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Large continuum schools with sizeable science cohorts. Laboratory time for individual investigations is the constraint families mention, which pushes students towards experiments needing minimal specialist apparatus.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Continuum schools with small higher level Physics groups. With four or five students in a set, nobody has seen a range of investigations, so external calibration on what a strong draft looks like matters more.

Dubai Hills Estate and Sobha Hartland

Newer Diploma cohorts and newer laboratories. Equipment is often good and the exemplar base is thin, so topic choice tends to come from online lists rather than from previous cohorts.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Mixed British and IB provision along the coast. Evening sessions dominate here, and data processing work suits that slot better than conceptual teaching does.

Arabian Ranches and Motor City

Villa communities feeding established Diploma schools. Outdoor investigations, including solar output work, are more practical for students with space at home than for apartment-based families.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Al Sheif

Dubai's thickest concentration of IB World Schools, generally with strong science facilities. Investigations from this cluster are usually well designed and most often need work on propagation and on quantified evaluation.

  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • GEMS Wellington International School

Nad Al Sheba, Mirdif, Dubai Hills and Festival City

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the research question and the stage

The proposed question, whether any data has been collected, and the school's internal deadline. If there is a results table or a draft, send it. Those three things determine whether the first session should be about design, about processing, or about reading a draft against the criteria.

  2. 02

We match a tutor who has supervised Physics investigations

Not a general science tutor. The first session usually involves judging whether a proposed design will yield analysable data and how the uncertainties will propagate, which is a specific skill. Where nobody suitable is free at your preferred hour we will say so and offer the next slot rather than substituting.

  3. 03

A free trial on the student's own investigation

The first session uses the real question or the real data. It ends with a clear statement of whether the design can produce a defensible result, or where the current draft sits on each of the four criteria. If that hour produces nothing the family did not already know, there is no reason to book a second.

  4. 04

    A short defined block

Four to six sessions covers most Physics investigations. We will say when the block is done rather than extending it. If the underlying issue is that the student cannot yet handle the physics the investigation needs, we will recommend a short subject block first and explain why that order is cheaper.

  5. 05

Criterion notes the student works from alone

After a draft review the student gets written notes organised by criterion, with the band and the reason for each. Calculation errors are flagged rather than corrected, so the student finds and fixes them. The report submitted to school is the one the student wrote and the honesty declaration they sign is accurate.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Uncertainty is taught once and fixes three criteria

Propagation from instrument to gradient to final answer improves data analysis, makes the conclusion defensible and gives evaluation a quantitative basis. One session on the arithmetic does more for a Physics IA mark than three on the physics.

Linearisation is planned, not improvised

Deciding what to plot against what before the laboratory session determines whether the right data gets collected. Students who leave it until after discover they measured over the wrong range, and that is not repairable in the write-up.

We design around the laboratory that exists

Dubai schools differ in apparatus and in technician time. We will ask what can actually be booked and steer towards investigations that produce analysable data with available equipment rather than towards impressive ones that stall.

Evaluation gets rebuilt, not lengthened

Six marks reward limitations with magnitudes and directions. Three quantified limitations with one targeted improvement beats a page of unquantified weaknesses, and we will cut rather than add.

AED figures with a source and a date

Every rate on this page is attributed to the provider that published it and read in October 2026, and presented as the market rather than as our price. A parent should be able to verify a page like this.

Specialists, not the nearest science tutor

Because delivery is online, the tutor is chosen for having supervised Physics investigations rather than for living near your community. In a small higher level set that is often the difference between real supervision and none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How long should the IB Physics investigation be?+

The upper limit is about 3,000 words, and strong investigations are frequently shorter. Tables, graphs, captions and calculations carry much of the content, and a report that reaches the limit through extended prose has usually padded the introduction or the evaluation. The useful discipline is to write the method, processing and evaluation as tightly as possible and let the data occupy the space. Confirm the current limit in the Physics subject guide your child's teacher is working from, since guides are revised on a cycle.

Why does my child's Physics IA need uncertainties propagated?+

Because three of the four criteria depend on it. Data analysis is incomplete without it, the conclusion cannot honestly compare a measured value with an accepted one without a range, and evaluation has no quantitative basis for ranking limitations. The sequence is mechanical: record instrument uncertainties, convert to percentages where quantities multiply or divide, combine them, find the gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum gradient lines, and round the answer so its last digit matches the uncertainty.

What does linearising a graph mean in a Physics IA?+

It means transforming the variables so a non-linear relationship becomes a straight line, then extracting the physical quantity from the gradient or intercept. If a period depends on the square root of a length, plot period squared against length. If intensity falls as an inverse square, plot against one over distance squared. Decide this before collecting data, because it determines the range and the number of points needed. A hand-drawn curve through raw points supports no quantitative conclusion.

How many data points and repeats does a Physics investigation need?+

As a working minimum, eight to ten well-spread values of the independent variable with three repeats at each. Fewer points cannot establish a relationship convincingly, and without repeats there is no basis for estimating random uncertainty, which costs marks in data analysis. The range matters as much as the count: points clustered over a narrow span produce a gradient with a large uncertainty regardless of how carefully each measurement was made. These are design decisions, taken before the laboratory booking.

What is the difference between a systematic error and a random uncertainty?+

Random uncertainty shows up as scatter between repeats and is reduced by taking more repeats. Systematic error shifts every reading in the same direction, from a zero error, an end correction or a consistently mis-set instrument, and is not reduced by repeating anything. The practical consequence for the write-up is that proposing more repeats as the fix for a systematic offset misdiagnoses the problem, and band descriptors reward the student who separates the two and names the physical cause of the systematic part.

Can a tutor help my child with their Physics IA without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within clear limits. A tutor may teach uncertainty propagation and linearisation, discuss whether a proposed design will produce analysable data, flag that a calculation contains an error for the student to find, explain what each criterion rewards, and report where a draft sits against the bands. A tutor may not perform the calculations, process the data, produce the graphs or write any part of the report. The student signs an academic honesty declaration and it must be accurate.

What if my child's school laboratory does not have the right equipment?+

Design around what is available, which costs nothing in criterion terms because the criteria reward design and analysis rather than apparatus. Video analysis of motion needs only a phone and free software and produces interesting frame-rate uncertainty. Thermal experiments need no specialist kit and supply a real systematic error. Electrical work uses standard supplies. Ask the Physics teacher early what can be booked for individual investigations and how many sessions are realistic, because the answer shapes the topic more than interest does.

Which Physics topics make the strongest investigations?+

Topics where the relationship is known from theory, the data is repeatable, and the uncertainties are large enough to be interesting but small enough to permit a conclusion. Simple harmonic motion, resistivity, thermal capacity with heat loss modelled, resonance in air columns and sphere-drop viscosity all meet those tests with ordinary equipment. Topics to be careful with are those needing apparatus the school may not hold, and those where several variables change at once outdoors unless the student can genuinely isolate one.

How much does the Physics IA count towards the final grade?+

Roughly a fifth of the Physics grade at both standard and higher level. It is marked out of twenty-four by the school teacher across four criteria of six marks each, and the IB moderates a sample of each school's marking, so the mark needs to be defensible against the band descriptors rather than simply generous. Confirm the exact weighting in the current subject guide, since the IB revises guides on a rolling cycle and the guide your child's teacher uses is the authority.

Why did a careful Physics investigation score in the middle?+

Most often because the uncertainties stopped at the results table. A report can describe a meticulous method, present clean data and still lose marks in data analysis, conclusion and evaluation simultaneously if nothing is propagated through to the final answer. The second common reason is an evaluation written as a list of weaknesses with no magnitudes attached, which the band descriptors cannot credit. Both are fixable in one or two sessions and neither reflects the quality of the practical work.

Should my child compare their result with an accepted value?+

Where one exists, yes, and the comparison should be quantitative. State the measured value with its propagated uncertainty, say whether the accepted value lies within that range, and give the percentage difference. That is a far stronger conclusion than observing that the values are similar. Where no accepted value exists, compare against the theoretical form instead: does the gradient have the sign and order of magnitude theory predicts, and does the intercept sit where theory says it should?

When should a Dubai Physics student start their investigation?+

Design work should begin at least five to seven months before the school's internal deadline, because laboratory access has to be booked and repeat data collection cannot be compressed. In practice that means starting in the first Diploma year for most Dubai schools. The long summer break is a particular hazard: school laboratories are generally unavailable, so any experiment needing school apparatus has to finish its practical work before term ends. Ask the teacher for the internal deadline list early.

What does Physics IA coaching cost for a family in Dubai?+

Published market rates read in October 2026 run from about AED 33-65 an hour at budget online platforms to AED 650 for premium examiner-branded providers, with Unitors listing IB from AED 200, TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate putting specialist IB and IGCSE support at AED 200-450 and above. Physics investigation work sits at the specialist end because the ability to propagate uncertainty into a gradient is genuinely scarce. Four to six sessions is the usual block, so budget it as a project rather than monthly.

Can my child use data collected at home rather than in the laboratory?+

Yes, provided the conditions are reported honestly and completely. Ambient temperature, the exact instrument used, the surface, the lighting and anything else that could affect the measurement belong in the method. A student who documents home conditions carefully demonstrates better scientific practice than one who implies laboratory conditions that did not apply. What is not acceptable is presenting home-collected data as though it came from controlled laboratory apparatus, which is a misrepresentation rather than a limitation.

Send the results table

For a Physics investigation the fastest useful diagnosis comes from the data rather than the prose. Send the results table and any graph, and the first session will say whether the uncertainties can be propagated to a defensible answer, whether the relationship needs linearising, and where each of the four criteria currently sits. If no data has been collected yet, that session is better still: design decisions made before the laboratory booking are the ones that determine what the write-up can claim. Sessions run over live video on Gulf Standard Time and the student keeps the annotated file.
