IB November Session Exam Preparation in Dubai

IB November session exam preparation in Dubai is a different job from May preparation, and the main reason is that there is usually no school teaching behind it. Most November candidates here are retaking one or two subjects, with the content already covered, the coursework mark often carried forward, and the loss sitting in the paper rather than in the knowledge. This page is about what that paper actually assesses and where the marks went. Sessions run online.

  • Built for candidates with no school teaching behind them
  • Retake arithmetic worked out before entries, not after results
  • Carried-forward coursework rules checked with the coordinator, not guessed
  • No IB examination or results date published here unverified

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Nobody is teaching this course any more

A November candidate in Dubai is usually in one of three situations, and they need completely different things. The largest group is retaking one or two subjects after a May result, with school finished, no lessons, no classmates and a deadline six months out. A second group attends a school on a southern-hemisphere academic calendar, for whom November is simply their normal session and the two-year programme runs on a different cycle. A third group is making a single targeted attempt at one component to lift a point total for a conditional offer.

What unites the first and third groups is the absence of teaching. There is no class moving through the syllabus, no teacher setting work, no mock timetable and no cohort. That changes the nature of preparation entirely. For a May candidate a tutor is supplementing a school; for a retake candidate a tutor is the entire structure, and the thing being bought is as much the schedule and the accountability as the subject knowledge.

It also changes where the marks are. A retake candidate has already been taught the whole syllabus, which means the content is largely present and the loss was usually in the paper. Marks go on misread command terms, method not written down, time running out in the final third, units and significant figures, and extended responses that describe without judging. That is good news, because paper losses respond faster than content gaps, and it is why a focused retake plan can be shorter than families fear.

The second major difference is arithmetic. A retake is a decision with a cost and an upside that can be estimated before entries close, and almost nobody does the estimate. How many marks were actually lost, in which components, and how many of those are recoverable in six months without new teaching? A marked script answers that. An opinion does not, and an opinion is what most families decide on.

Coursework is the part that catches people. Internal Assessment, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge marks may be carried forward in defined circumstances and for a limited number of sessions, under rules the IB sets. Those rules are not reproduced on this page, because they have not been verified from the IB's own site for it and because they apply case by case. Your former school's Diploma coordinator is the right first call, and a wrong assumption here can mean a retake that cannot reach the target at all.

Sessions are delivered online, one to one, over live video. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai, since that is an India-only service, and for retake candidates the online format solves a real problem: many are travelling, working, or no longer living where they sat the Diploma, and a plan that survives a change of city is worth more than one tied to a drive.

At a glance

  • Most retake marks are paper marks, not content marks
  • The retake decision is arithmetic, done from marked scripts
  • Carried-forward coursework rules come from the coordinator, not from us
  • Registration as a later-session candidate has to be arranged early
  • Delivered online, one to one; no home visits anywhere in the UAE
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three candidate types sit this session and they are not variations of one another. The entries below set out what each is actually preparing for.

RetakePost Diploma

Retake candidate, one or two subjects

No new teaching, a narrow component list, and coursework usually carried forward. Preparation is almost entirely paper technique on components that were already taught, which makes the plan shorter and more measurable than a full course. The constraint is motivation and structure rather than hours in the week.

In Dubai the practical obstacle is registration. A candidate needs an IB World School willing to act as their centre, and their former school may or may not do it. Ask before building a plan, because a plan with no centre behind it is not a plan.

November cohortAges 17-19

Southern-hemisphere calendar candidate

For these students November is the normal session, with the two-year programme shifted so the final year ends in the second half of the calendar year. Internal deadlines, mocks and university applications all sit at different points from a May candidate's, and generic advice written for May candidates misleads them systematically.

A handful of schools in the region run on this calendar, and their candidates are frequently handed May-session revision timetables by well-meaning tutors. The first job with this group is to rebuild the calendar around their actual internal deadlines rather than around the city's dominant cycle.

Single componentPost Diploma

Targeted single-component attempt

One paper, or occasionally one subject, attempted to move a point total across a specific threshold. The work is narrow and heavily technique-led, and the useful first question is whether the threshold is actually reachable from the marks lost last time. Sometimes it is not, and that answer saves a wasted six months.

Dubai families in this position are usually holding a conditional offer that names points or a specific subject grade. The arithmetic of which component to attack should follow the offer's wording rather than the subject that feels worst.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Retake candidates come back for a small set of subjects, and each has a characteristic place where marks were lost. The grid below names that place rather than restating the syllabus, because no retake plan has room to cover a whole course again.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Retake losses cluster in the non-calculator paper and in multi-step algebra abandoned halfway. Higher Level Paper 3 is the component most often never practised. Six months with three marked attempts at each paper is usually enough to find and close the pattern.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The recurring loss is commentary: output obtained, meaning never stated, assumptions never named. It reads as a modelling weakness and is a writing weakness. Marks move quickly because the mathematics is already secure.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Calculation steps omitted and organic mechanisms missing conditions, reagents or intermediates. A retake candidate who already knows the content can recover a substantial share of a paper by changing how answers are written, with no new learning at all.

Physics

HL and SL

Units, significant figures and the explicit statement of the principle in use. Retake scripts commonly show the correct physics scoring below half on a question. This is the clearest example of a paper loss rather than a knowledge loss.

Biology

HL and SL

Data-based questions and the mark scheme's accepted terminology. A student who has already sat the course usually knows the biology and loses marks to loose wording, which is fixable by marking rather than by re-reading.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram labelling and the missing evaluation at the end of extended responses, together with Higher Level paper calculations left without working. All three are structural habits and all three respond inside a handful of marked questions.

Business Management

HL and SL

Application to the stimulus rather than to a memorised framework, and judgement at the end of longer answers. Retake candidates often return with better content than they had first time and the same two habits intact.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Timed structure rather than reading. The guided analysis is a pattern that can be rehearsed, and the comparative essay fails when two works are handled in two separate halves. Both are visible between a candidate's own first and third timed attempts.

Language B: French, Spanish, Arabic

HL and SL

Text type conventions, register and word limits rather than vocabulary. A candidate retaking a Language B after a year away usually needs listening practice restarted early, because that component decays faster than the others.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats for a later sitting, chosen by how much structure the candidate needs rather than by subject. All are delivered online.

Retake diagnosis and decision block

Two or three sessions before any entry is made. The candidate sits one past paper per target component under timing, the tutor marks it and classifies the losses, and the output is an estimate of how many marks are realistically recoverable in the time available. Some candidates use this block and decide not to retake, which is a legitimate result.

  • One timed paper per target component, marked to the scheme
  • Losses classified as content, command term, method or time
  • A written estimate of recoverable marks and the time needed
  • An explicit statement when the target is not reachable

Structured six-month plan with weekly accountability

The format for a candidate with no school behind them. A fixed weekly slot, work set and marked between sessions, and a monthly comparison of raw marks on comparable papers. The accountability is a large part of what is being bought, because a six-month gap with no external structure is where most retakes quietly fail.

  • A fixed weekly slot held for the whole plan
  • Work set and marked between sessions, not discussed
  • Monthly raw-mark comparison on comparable papers
  • A plan with a stated end point, reviewed at the halfway mark

Single-component sprint

Eight to ten sessions aimed at one paper, used where a conditional offer depends on a specific grade and the loss last time was narrow. High intensity, narrow scope, and honest about the ceiling: a component sprint cannot repair a subject, only a component.

  • One component, eight to ten sessions, fixed end date
  • Every session produces a marked timed attempt
  • Habits tracked on a single page, revisited each week
  • Stops when the marks plateau, rather than running on

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Who actually sits this session, and why it matters for the plan

Pages about the November session tend to describe it as though it were May with a different month, which misleads almost everyone who reads them. In this market the session has three distinct populations. Retake candidates, who have finished school and are returning for one or two subjects. Candidates at schools on a southern-hemisphere academic calendar, for whom this is the normal session and the whole two-year programme is shifted. And candidates making a single targeted attempt to move a point total for a conditional offer.

The retake group has no teaching behind it, which is the defining feature. There is no class, no teacher setting work, no mock timetable and no cohort to measure against. Everything that a school normally supplies has to be rebuilt by the candidate and whoever is helping them, and the thing most often missing is not knowledge but structure. A plan for this group has to be a calendar before it is a syllabus.

The calendar group has the opposite problem. They have a full school structure and are routinely handed advice written for the dominant cycle, including revision timetables pegged to a May sitting and internal deadline assumptions that do not match their school's. The first useful act with these candidates is to throw away the generic timetable and rebuild it from their own coordinator's deadline list.

The single-component group needs arithmetic more than teaching. The question is whether the specific threshold in a conditional offer is reachable from the marks lost last time, in the components that can be re-sat, within the months available. Sometimes the answer is yes with a narrow plan. Sometimes it is no, and hearing that in week one rather than week twenty is the most valuable thing a tutor can provide.

02

What changes between the two sessions

The papers themselves are set for the session, so a candidate is not sitting a recycled May paper, and past papers from either session are useful practice because the syllabus and the mark scheme conventions are shared. What differs is everything around the paper: the cohort size, the availability of teaching, the position in the university calendar, and the consequences of the result arriving when it does.

Cohort size matters more than it sounds. A smaller session means fewer classmates to compare against and, for some subjects, fewer tutors who have recently worked on that component. For Dubai families the practical effect is that specialist availability for a later session is thinner than for the dominant one, and booking late is riskier rather than merely inconvenient.

The results timing is the consequential difference. A result from a later session arrives after most university cycles have moved on, which means a candidate may be holding a deferred place, a gap year, or an offer that has already lapsed. This is not an argument against retaking; it is an argument for finding out from the university, in writing, what it will accept and by when, before committing to an entry.

The table sets the two sessions against each other on the points that change a plan. Note that no date appears in it. The IB publishes its own dates and they could not be verified from the IB's site for this page, so the shape is given and the dates belong to your coordinator.

Retake arithmetic: what can move and what cannot

A retake is a purchase with an estimable return, and the estimate takes one afternoon. Start from the component marks, not the grade. A subject grade is built from papers and coursework with published weightings, so the first question is which components carried the loss. A candidate who lost most of their marks on a single paper has a far better case than one who lost a few marks on every component, even if both ended with the same grade.

The second question is whether those marks are of a recoverable type. Marks lost to misread command terms, unwritten method, missing units or abandoned final questions are habit losses, and six months without new teaching is more than enough to change a habit. Marks lost because a whole topic was never understood are content losses, and those take longer and need actual teaching, which a retake candidate does not have access to at school.

The third question is the coursework. Where an Internal Assessment mark is carried forward it cannot be improved, which puts a ceiling on the subject grade regardless of how well the papers go. That ceiling is calculable from the published weightings, and calculating it before entering is the difference between a retake that can reach the target and one that cannot. The rules on what may be carried forward, and for how long, come from the IB and your coordinator rather than from this page.

The table works through the decision in order. A candidate who can answer all five rows has a real basis for entering or not entering, and either answer is a good outcome compared with six months spent on an unreachable target.

04

Where a retake candidate's marks actually went

  • Final-third losses: pacing, fixed by full timed rehearsals
  • Command terms: answered by instinct, at the wrong depth
  • Method and presentation: nothing to learn, marks to reclaim
  • Absent topics: real teaching needed, and time has to be allocated for it

The pattern across retake scripts is consistent enough to predict. The largest single category is the final third of the paper: questions left blank, attempted in two lines, or answered out of order after time ran short. That is not a knowledge failure. It is pacing, and it moves with three full timed rehearsals because the candidate learns what six minutes of writing feels like.

The second category is command terms. A candidate who has sat the course once has usually never been shown the published command term list and has answered by instinct. Instinct produces competent prose at the wrong depth: a description where a judgement was wanted, a paragraph where a single exact point was wanted. Fixing this is a matter of reading the term before the stem, and it transfers across every subject the candidate is retaking.

The third category is method and presentation. Unwritten steps in mathematics and chemistry calculations, missing units and significant figures in physics, unlabelled axes in economics diagrams, accepted terminology not used in biology. These are the marks that make a strong student's script score like a weak one, and they are the fastest of all to recover because nothing has to be learned.

The fourth category is the one that genuinely needs teaching: topics never understood. These are visible on a script as whole questions with nothing usable in them, as opposed to questions with the right idea written badly. A retake plan should state honestly how many of these there are and how much of the available time they will consume, because they compete directly with the habit work that pays faster.

05

Six months with no school: what the plan has to supply

A retake candidate has roughly six months and no external structure, which is a harder problem than a crowded school timetable. The failure mode is well known and entirely predictable: a strong first month, a quiet second and third, panic in the fifth. A plan that does not design against that pattern will reproduce it, and no amount of subject expertise compensates.

What works is a small number of fixed, non-negotiable commitments. One weekly session at the same time, held even in a week where little was done. Work set between sessions that is marked rather than discussed, because marked work cannot be quietly skipped. A monthly raw-mark comparison that makes drift visible in week eight rather than week twenty. And a stated end point, so the plan can be judged rather than extended indefinitely.

The other half of the problem is that the candidate's life has changed. Many are working, interning, starting a foundation course, or living in a different country from the one they sat the Diploma in. A plan that assumes a student at home with empty days will fail. The honest version asks how many hours a week genuinely exist, then designs for that number rather than for the number everybody would prefer.

The table lays out a six-month shape in blocks rather than dates, with what each block should produce. Shift the boundaries to suit the candidate's actual availability; the order and the artefacts are the parts that matter.

A SIX-MONTH LATER-SESSION PLAN, IN BLOCKS
BlockThe jobHours a week, realisticallyWhat it should produce
Month 1Diagnosis, decision, registration and calendar2 to 3Marked papers per component, a recoverable-marks estimate, a confirmed centre
Month 2Absent topics taught, in the order the script exposed3 to 4Topic list with items cleared, short marked question sets
Month 3Habit work: command terms, method, units, presentation3 to 4A one-page habit list and two marked timed components
Month 4First full paper rehearsals under real timing4Raw marks logged and compared with the month-one baseline
Month 5Pacing and the final third of the paper4Three comparable raw marks showing the pacing change
Month 6Rehearsal, timetable check, nothing new started3A closed plan, a short habit list, no new content
06

Coursework carried forward, and the ceiling it creates

This is the part of a retake that most often goes wrong, and it goes wrong before any studying happens. Internal Assessment, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge marks may be carried forward in defined circumstances and within a limited number of sessions, under rules set by the IB. Those rules are specific, they apply case by case, and they are not reproduced here because they could not be verified from the IB's own site for this page.

The reason it matters is arithmetic. If an Internal Assessment mark is carried forward, it is fixed, and the subject grade is then capped by what the papers alone can contribute at their published weighting. A candidate aiming for a particular subject grade needs to know whether that grade is even arithmetically available with the carried-forward mark in place. Working that out takes ten minutes with the weightings and prevents a six-month plan aimed at an impossible target.

The opposite case also exists. Where coursework can be resubmitted or is not carried forward, a candidate has a component they can improve with written work rather than under examination conditions, which is often the most reliable marks available to them. Knowing which of the two situations applies changes the whole plan, and the answer comes from the coordinator.

A tutor's role on coursework remains what it is everywhere else on this site. A tutor may explain criteria, question a method, narrow a research question and comment on a draft by naming the criterion and the band. A tutor may not write, rewrite or complete any part of an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge essay. A retake candidate under time pressure is exactly the person most likely to be offered that service by somebody, and exactly the person with the most to lose from accepting it.

07

Results timing, universities, and the case for not retaking

A result from a later session arrives after most of the admissions cycle has moved on. For a Dubai family that usually means one of three positions: a deferred place already secured, a gap year in progress, or an offer that has lapsed and will need to be reapplied for. Each has different implications, and all of them need confirming with the institution in writing rather than inferring from a website.

The question to put to a university is narrow and answerable: will you accept a result from this session for this intake, and by what date do you need it. Admissions offices answer that question routinely. Families who ask it before entering make better decisions, and occasionally discover that the retake cannot help the application it was intended for, which is worth knowing in advance.

There is also an honest case for not retaking, and it deserves stating on a page that sells preparation. If the losses were spread evenly across every component, if several topics were genuinely never understood, if the coursework ceiling caps the achievable grade below the target, and if the candidate has started something else they care about, then six months of solitary preparation is a poor investment. Foundation routes, alternative courses and reapplication with the existing grades all exist.

Where the case for retaking is strong, it is usually strong for a specific reason: a single component carried the loss, the losses were habit-shaped, the coursework mark is decent and carried forward, and the target is one or two points away. That combination responds very well to a narrow six-month plan. This page carries no success rate or average improvement figure, because none could be produced with a sample size, a date and a method, and no tutor can promise a grade on an externally marked paper.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Retake candidates are not tied to a school day, so the usual Dubai scheduling constraints do not apply in the same way. The notes below describe the real pattern instead: candidates who are travelling, working, or between cities.

Dubai Marina and JLT

A high share of candidates in shared or family apartments who have started an internship or a foundation course alongside the retake. Daytime weekday slots are often available here, which is unusual and worth using for timed papers.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Families whose student has stayed at home for the retake year. The risk here is a day with no structure at all, which is why a fixed slot and a weekly artefact matter more than the number of hours.

Downtown and Business Bay

Candidates combining a retake with work experience in the city. Evening sessions after 20:00 are common and perfectly workable, provided timed papers are placed at the weekend rather than at the end of a working day.

Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills

Students often travelling between Dubai and a university city while a conditional offer is pending. A plan that survives two time zones is the requirement, and online delivery is the only version that does.

Mirdif and Al Qusais

Candidates frequently registered at a centre some distance from home, which makes the practical arrangements for the sitting itself worth confirming months ahead rather than weeks.

Outside Dubai entirely

A significant number of retake candidates have left the UAE since their first sitting and are preparing from India, the United Kingdom or elsewhere in the Gulf. Online sessions on Gulf Standard Time or a shifted slot handle that without changing the plan.

School ecosystem

Dubai IB World Schools that register candidates

A retake candidate needs an IB World School to act as their centre, and policies differ. The schools below run the Diploma in Dubai; whether any will register an external candidate is a question to ask each one directly rather than to assume from its programme list.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the component marks, not just the grade

A subject grade hides where the loss happened. Component-level marks show whether one paper carried it or whether the loss was spread, and that single distinction decides whether a retake is a narrow fix or a long rebuild. Your former school or the IB's own candidate channels are where those figures come from.

  2. 02

Confirm the centre and the coursework rule

Find an IB World School willing to register the candidate, and ask the coordinator in writing which coursework marks carry forward and for how many sessions. Both answers are prerequisites rather than details. A plan built before these are settled can turn out to be aimed at a grade that is not arithmetically available.

  3. 03

Sit one timed paper per target component

Under full timing, no notes, in one sitting, then self-marked against the published scheme. The tutor re-marks independently and classifies every lost mark as content, command term, method or time. That classification is the whole basis of the estimate that follows.

  4. 04

Take the written estimate, then decide

The output of the diagnosis block is a short written note: recoverable marks by category, hours needed, and whether the target is reachable. Candidates who read that and choose not to retake have had good value from it. A provider unwilling to write that note is not offering a plan.

  5. 05

Hold a fixed weekly slot for six months

The common failure in a retake is not difficulty but drift, and drift is designed against rather than talked about. One slot at the same time every week, marked work between sessions, a monthly raw-mark comparison, and a stated end date. Attendance in a quiet week matters more than intensity in a good one.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Built for candidates with no school behind them

A retake plan has to supply the structure a school normally provides: a fixed slot, work that is marked rather than suggested, and a monthly measurement. That is a different product from supplementing a school timetable, and pretending otherwise is why most solitary retakes drift.

The decision comes before the teaching

Two or three diagnosis sessions produce a written estimate of recoverable marks and an explicit answer on whether the target is reachable. Candidates who use that block and decide not to enter have been well served, which is the test of whether the advice was honest.

Coursework ceilings calculated, not assumed

Where an Internal Assessment mark is carried forward it is fixed, and the achievable subject grade is capped by what the papers can contribute. Ten minutes with the published weightings settles whether a target grade exists, and that calculation happens before entries rather than after.

Paper losses first, because they move fastest

A candidate who has already sat the course usually knows the content. Pacing, command terms, method and presentation are where the marks went, and those respond inside three timed rehearsals with no new learning required.

No unverified dates and no promised grades

No IB examination or results date is published here, because none could be verified from the IB's own site for this page; your coordinator holds them. No success rate or average improvement appears either, since neither could be produced with a sample size and a method.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Who actually sits the IB November session?+

Three different groups. Retake candidates returning for one or two subjects after a May result, with school finished and no teaching behind them. Candidates at schools on a southern-hemisphere academic calendar, for whom this is simply their normal session and the whole two-year programme is shifted. And candidates making a single targeted attempt at one component to move a point total for a conditional offer. The three need different plans, and most published advice about this session is written as though only the second group existed.

Can my child retake just one or two subjects rather than the whole Diploma?+

Retaking a subset of subjects in a later session is the normal pattern, and it is what most Dubai retake candidates do. The important preliminary is not whether it is possible but whether it is useful: which components carried the loss, whether those losses were habit-shaped or content-shaped, and what the coursework position is. A subject where one paper carried the loss and the coursework mark is decent is a strong retake candidate. A subject with marks lost evenly across every component is a much weaker one.

Will the Internal Assessment mark carry forward to a later sitting?+

Coursework marks may be carried forward in defined circumstances and within a limited number of sessions under rules the IB sets, and those rules apply case by case. They are not reproduced here because they could not be verified from the IB's own site for this page, and a wrong assumption has real consequences. Ask the Diploma coordinator in writing. The answer matters for arithmetic rather than for convenience: a carried-forward mark is fixed, so it caps the achievable subject grade at whatever the papers can add.

How do we register as a retake candidate in Dubai?+

A candidate needs an IB World School willing to act as their centre, and policies differ between schools. A former school may do it and may not, and a school that has never met the candidate is under no obligation. Treat this as the first task rather than an administrative detail, because a plan with no confirmed centre behind it is not a plan. Ask in writing, confirm the entry deadline the centre works to, and get the arrangement settled before any preparation schedule is built.

When do later-session results arrive relative to university offers?+

After most of the admissions cycle has moved on, which is the central practical problem with a retake. In Dubai that usually means holding a deferred place, being mid gap year, or needing to reapply with a lapsed offer. The question to put to the institution is narrow: will you accept a result from this session for this intake, and by what date do you need it. Admissions offices answer that routinely, and asking before entering occasionally reveals that the retake cannot help the application it was meant for.

Is a retake worth doing for one point?+

It depends entirely on whether that point is load-bearing. If a conditional offer names a points total and the candidate is one short, and the shortfall sits in a component where the loss was pacing or command terms, then a narrow plan has a good case. If the point is wanted for its own sake, six months of solitary preparation is an expensive way to get it. Read the offer's exact wording first, because offers that specify a subject grade and offers that specify a total point to completely different plans.

How many marks can a retake realistically move without new teaching?+

No honest number can be given in general, and any site quoting one is inventing it. What can be estimated, from a marked paper, is the size of each loss category. Marks lost to pacing, command terms, method and presentation are recoverable in six months with no new learning. Marks lost because a topic was never understood need teaching time that competes with the habit work. The estimate is specific to the script, which is why the diagnosis block comes before any commitment.

What does a six-month plan look like when nobody is teaching the course?+

Month one is diagnosis, registration and calendar. Month two teaches the absent topics the script exposed, in that order. Month three is habit work on command terms, method and presentation. Month four begins full timed rehearsals. Month five attacks pacing and the final third of the paper. Month six closes the plan with nothing new started. Across all six, the non-negotiables are a fixed weekly slot, work that is marked rather than discussed, and a monthly comparison of raw marks on comparable papers.

Do universities treat a later-session result differently from a May one?+

The qualification is the same and the grades mean the same thing, so the difference is practical rather than academic: the result arrives later in the cycle. Some institutions and some intakes accommodate that easily, others do not, and a few require the result by a date that a later session cannot meet. There is no general rule worth relying on, which is why the only sound approach is to ask the specific institution about the specific intake in writing and keep the reply.

Does the paper itself differ between sessions?+

Each session has its own papers, so a candidate is not sitting a recycled version of an earlier one. The syllabus and the mark scheme conventions are shared, which means past papers from either session are legitimate and useful practice. What differs around the paper is more consequential than the paper: cohort size, availability of teaching, the depth of specialist tutors for a given component, and where the result lands in the university calendar. Plan around those rather than around any imagined difference in difficulty.

Do you come to our home in Dubai for retake sessions?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE, since that is an India-only service, and all sessions are delivered online over live video. For retake candidates this resolves a genuine problem rather than creating one. Many have left the city or the country since their first sitting, or are working or studying alongside the retake, and a plan that survives a change of address and a change of time zone is worth considerably more than one built around a weekly drive to a fixed address.

What does retake preparation cost in Dubai?+

Published Dubai rates run from roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour at the budget end, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, and AED 200 to 450 and above for IB specialist work, with TutorChase quoting AED 270 and a premium named tier reaching AED 650 at BartyED. A retake is usually fewer total hours than a full year of support, because the scope is two or three components rather than six subjects. Ask any provider for the number of sessions and whether marking between them is included.

Can a retake candidate improve a Theory of Knowledge or Extended Essay grade?+

Whether a core component can be resubmitted or is carried forward is governed by the IB's rules and depends on the case, so the coordinator is the right source rather than a tutoring page. The arithmetic consequence is what matters: core points contribute to the total, so a fixed core grade changes which totals are reachable from the subjects being retaken. Where resubmission is permitted, written work done without examination pressure is often the most reliable improvement available to a retake candidate.

My child's school runs a different academic year, so is this their normal session?+

For schools on a southern-hemisphere academic calendar, yes, and those candidates are not retakers. The practical risk for this group is being handed advice written for the dominant cycle: revision timetables pegged to a different sitting, and internal deadline assumptions that do not match their school. The first thing to do is rebuild the plan from their own coordinator's deadline list, which will place Internal Assessment deadlines, mocks and university applications at different points from the ones most Dubai advice assumes.

What is the honest case for not retaking at all?+

If the losses were spread evenly across every component rather than concentrated, if several topics were genuinely never understood, if a carried-forward coursework mark caps the achievable grade below the target, and if the candidate has already started something they care about, then six months of solitary preparation is a poor investment. Foundation routes, alternative courses and reapplying with the existing grades are all real options. A diagnosis block that ends in that conclusion has done its job, even though it ends the sale.

Diagnose before you enter

The most valuable work in a retake happens before any entry is submitted. Get the component marks rather than the subject grade, ask the coordinator in writing which coursework marks carry forward, confirm an IB World School will register the candidate, and have one timed paper per target component marked and classified by cause of loss. Book the free trial lesson and spend it on that script. The output should be a written estimate of recoverable marks and a straight answer on whether the target is reachable in the months available. Either answer is worth having, and the second one saves a great deal more than it costs.
