IB MYP Tutor in Al Twar

Finding an IB MYP tutor in Al Twar is hard for a structural reason: the people who know the IB in this part of Dubai mostly know the Diploma. The Middle Years Programme marks differently, phrases its tasks differently, assesses interdisciplinary work separately and places language students by phase rather than by year. A Diploma specialist can miss all of that. This page sets out what MYP teaching actually requires. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Al Twar

Why is an MYP tutor harder to find in Al Twar than an IB tutor?

Because most of the IB knowledge in this part of Dubai is Diploma knowledge, and the two programmes are not variants of each other. Al Twar sits beside a large British and Indian curriculum market with IB continuum provision concentrated in a small number of schools, which means the local tutoring supply has had limited reason to learn how the Middle Years Programme works. A tutor can build a successful practice here on Diploma, IGCSE and CBSE work without ever reading an MYP task sheet.

The gap shows in specific places. MYP tasks are written in command terms arranged by cognitive demand, so a strand that asks a student to state something is asking for a different response from one that asks them to evaluate it, and the marks follow the verb. Language acquisition places students in one of six phases rather than by year group, so two children in the same class can be working to different expectations. Interdisciplinary units are assessed against their own criteria, not against the criteria of the two subjects they combine. None of that is intuitive, and none of it is in a Diploma teacher's working knowledge.

There is a further difference that matters more than it sounds. In the Diploma an examiner marks a student's script against a mark scheme. In the MYP a teacher judges a body of work against descriptors, taking into account what the student has demonstrated across tasks. That changes what useful tutoring looks like: less drilling of answer formats, more teaching a student to read a descriptor and recognise which band their own work sits in. A student who can self-assess against a descriptor has acquired something that keeps paying for the rest of the programme.

For an Al Twar family this produces a practical problem and a practical answer. The problem is that the nearby pool of genuinely MYP-literate tutors is small, and a tutor's IB experience is not a reliable proxy for it. The answer is to test rather than assume: ask what interdisciplinary units are assessed on, ask what a phase means in language acquisition, and ask how a command term changes an expected response. Those three questions separate MYP experience from Diploma experience in about two minutes.

One thing to state plainly. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. MYP tuition for an Al Twar family is delivered one-to-one over live video, with a shared screen for worked problems, annotated drafts and the task sheet open beside the descriptor. Given how thinly MYP-literate tutors are spread across this part of Dubai, that is how the matching problem is solved rather than worked around.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP is five years long and the job changes substantially across them. These are the stages an Al Twar student passes through, and what each one needs.

MYPAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

MYP 1 to MYP 3

Eight subject groups, criterion-based assessment, interdisciplinary units and approaches to learning skills running throughout. Mathematics and sciences are usually taught as single subjects at this stage, with separation into disciplines coming later in most schools.

The useful tutoring in these years is rarely content. It is teaching a student to read a task sheet properly: to notice which command term is used, to see which strand of which criterion is being assessed, and to produce the kind of response the descriptor actually describes.

MYPAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

MYP 4 and MYP 5

Subject groups separate into disciplines in many schools, mathematics splits into standard and extended routes, and the final year carries the Personal Project. Some schools enter students for on-screen eAssessment leading to the IB MYP Certificate and many do not.

This is where Al Twar families start buying tutoring, and where the Diploma-versus-MYP mismatch does most damage, because a Diploma-trained tutor will teach towards examination technique the student does not yet need and skip the criterion work they do.

PYPAges 3-12 · Years 1-6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led primary education organised around transdisciplinary themes, with the exhibition at the end. There are no criterion marks of the MYP kind, so MYP 1 feels like a change in how work is judged rather than in how much of it there is.

A student moving from PYP into MYP 1 in this cluster usually arrives confident at inquiry and unfamiliar with being measured against a published descriptor. The first useful job is translation, and it is cheaper done in MYP 1 than explained in MYP 4.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme after MYP

Six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and creativity, activity, service, with assessment returning to timed written papers and an internal assessment component in most subjects.

Al Twar has Diploma provision locally and in Al Garhoud. The students who move most smoothly are those who practised timed written answers during MYP 5 alongside their criterion work, which almost nobody does unless somebody suggests it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP tutoring is requested subject by subject in this district, and the criteria and failure modes change with the subject group. These are the ones families here ask for.

MYP Sciences

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Criterion B asks for inquiring and designing and criterion C for processing and evaluating, so three of the four criteria concern how an investigation is handled rather than what is known. Content teaching alone touches one.

MYP Mathematics

Standard and extended routes

Criterion B, investigating patterns, is where marks go missing: students find the pattern and stop without generalising or justifying. Criterion D asks for mathematics applied in a real-life context, rewarding judgement over calculation.

MYP Language and Literature

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Analysing, organising, producing text and using language. The commonest loss is retelling a text rather than explaining how a writer's choice creates an effect, which is a habit rather than a knowledge gap.

MYP Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Placed by phase, not by year group, with criteria covering listening, reading, speaking and writing. A student can sit in different phases across skills, which parents find counter-intuitive and schools rarely explain.

MYP Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Investigating with sources evaluated for reliability and purpose, not merely cited. Marks are lost by listing evidence without judging it, and by conclusions the sources do not actually support.

MYP Design

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution and evaluating. The process journal carries most of the marks, so an excellent product with thin documented iteration scores poorly.

MYP Arts

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding. Evidence of process is assessed, so the most useful help is often teaching a student to document their own thinking.

MYP Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Includes written planning and reflection components that surprise families expecting a practical-only subject. The written strands can be supported exactly as any other reflective writing.

Interdisciplinary units

All MYP years

Assessed against their own criteria, requiring disciplinary grounding, synthesis across two subject groups and reflection on the process. Students treat them as double homework; the marks are for the synthesis.

Personal Project

Final MYP year

An independent project assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal as evidence. A goal too vague to evaluate against is the usual cause of a disappointing mark.

Arabic

First and additional language

Mandatory in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA requiring separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and Standard Arabic as the language of instruction for first-language Arabic.

Approaches to learning

Across all subjects

Communication, social, self-management, research and thinking skills. Not graded as a subject, and the reason two students with the same knowledge receive different criterion marks on the same task.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Al Twar families use MYP support, all delivered over live video and all built around task sheets rather than past papers.

Task-sheet coaching

Working from the actual task the school has set, with the criterion strands and command terms open beside it, so the student learns to decode what is being asked before writing anything. The single most transferable skill available in the programme.

  • The command term identified and translated into a required response
  • The strands being assessed named explicitly
  • The student's draft measured against the descriptor, not a model answer
  • Repeated until the student can do it unaided

Subject-specific criterion work

Weekly sessions in one subject group targeting the criterion where the student is a band behind their others, which is usually criterion B or C rather than the knowledge criterion families assume.

  • One criterion per block rather than all four at once
  • Real tasks from the school, not generic exercises
  • Written notes so the student can self-mark next time
  • Reviewed against the next reported criterion marks

Personal Project and MYP 5 support

Structure through the project year and, where it is wanted, preparation for the move to the Diploma. Supervision is questioning and feedback on the student's own work; we will not produce any part of it.

  • A goal narrowed until it can be evaluated against the criteria
  • Process journal habits established early, not reconstructed late
  • Timed written practice for students heading to the Diploma
  • The academic-honesty boundary stated at the first session

01

Command terms on an MYP task sheet, and why they decide the mark

Every MYP task sheet is written in command terms, and the terms are arranged by cognitive demand. A strand that asks a student to state or outline something wants a short, accurate response and nothing more. One that asks them to explain wants reasons. One that asks them to analyse wants the thing broken into parts with relationships identified. One that asks them to evaluate or justify wants a judgement supported by evidence. The descriptor bands are written to match, so a student who explains where the task said analyse cannot reach the top band no matter how much they know.

This is the most common and most fixable cause of a disappointing criterion mark in MYP, and it is almost never what a family is told. A report that says a student needs to develop their analysis is accurate and unhelpful. What the student needs is to notice the word analyse on the task sheet, know what response shape it calls for, and produce that shape. That is teachable in a handful of sessions and it transfers to every subject group at once, which makes it the best-value intervention in the programme.

A Diploma-trained tutor will often miss this, not through carelessness but because the Diploma habit is different. Diploma command terms are drilled against past papers and mark schemes, where the reward is a specific answer format. MYP command terms are drilled against task sheets and descriptors, where the reward is a kind of thinking demonstrated across a piece of work. The vocabulary overlaps and the method does not.

The practical step for a parent is simple and costs nothing: look at the next task sheet your child brings home and find the command terms. They are usually in bold or in the strand wording. Then ask your child what each one is asking them to produce. If they cannot say, you have found the problem and you now know precisely what to buy.

02

Interdisciplinary units: assessed separately, understood by almost nobody

Interdisciplinary units are a required part of the MYP and they are assessed against their own criteria rather than against the criteria of the subjects they combine. That single fact explains most of the disappointment they generate. A unit joining sciences and individuals and societies is not asking for a science answer plus a humanities answer; it asks the student to bring grounding from both disciplines together into something neither would produce alone, and then to reflect on what the combination made possible.

Students treat them as double homework and write twice as much, which scores badly. The marks sit in the synthesis: the point at which a scientific mechanism and a social or historical context are used together to say something that needed both. A tutor who has taught interdisciplinary units knows to spend the session on that junction rather than on either subject, which is a different lesson plan from anything a single-subject tutor would produce.

The reflection element is the second place marks go missing. Students narrate: first we researched, then we made a poster. The criterion wants a judgement on what the interdisciplinary approach allowed them to understand that a single discipline would not have, and what its limitations were. That is an unfamiliar kind of writing for a fourteen-year-old, and it is coachable in two or three sessions once somebody names what is wanted.

If your child's school runs these units, ask for the unit's own assessment criteria rather than assuming the subject criteria apply. Teachers provide them readily. A tutor who asks for that document before the session is one who has done this before; a tutor who proposes to help with the science half and the history half separately has told you they have not.

03

Language acquisition runs in phases, not year groups

This is the part of the MYP that confuses Al Twar parents most, and reasonably so. In language acquisition students are placed in one of six phases according to their proficiency, not according to their age or year group. A capable MYP 4 student who began French two years ago may sit in an early phase, and an MYP 2 student who speaks the language at home may sit in a later one. The phases describe a continuum of proficiency; the year group describes nothing about it.

Two consequences follow. First, comparing your child's language grade with a classmate's is meaningless unless they are in the same phase, because the descriptors differ. A 6 in phase 2 and a 6 in phase 4 are not the same achievement and were never intended to be read as such. Second, progress in this subject can look flat on a report while the student is in fact moving towards the next phase, which is a conversation worth having with the teacher rather than a reason to buy tutoring.

The criteria cover listening, reading, speaking and writing, and students are frequently uneven across them. A child who reads well and freezes in the interactive task needs speaking practice, not vocabulary lists, and the two are not interchangeable. This is where a tutor who knows the programme is worth paying for: the diagnosis is which criterion is trailing, and the response differs completely by criterion.

For Arabic specifically there is a UAE dimension. Arabic is mandatory in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA requires schools to organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes for both groups strictly prohibited because of the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. KHDA also requires Standard Arabic as the main language of instruction for first-language Arabic. Ask the school which stream your child is in before arranging support, because the expectations differ.

04

MYP mathematics: standard or extended, and what the choice means

By the final MYP years most schools separate mathematics into a standard and an extended route, and the choice matters for what comes next. The extended route covers additional content and pitches tasks at greater demand; the standard route covers the core of the same framework. Both are assessed against the same four criteria, so the criterion profile remains the diagnostic tool in either case, and the route is the school's decision based on evidence it will share if asked.

The consequence shows up at the Diploma transition. A student heading towards Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, or towards a science Higher Level, benefits substantially from the extended route, because the Diploma assumes an algebraic fluency the standard route is less likely to have built. A student heading elsewhere loses nothing by the standard route and gains time in a week that has eight subject groups in it.

Where tutoring genuinely helps is criterion B rather than content. Investigating patterns is the strand where MYP mathematics marks reliably go missing, on both routes, because students find the pattern, state it and consider the work complete. The criterion asks them to generalise it, express the generalisation correctly and justify why it holds. That final step is rarely taught explicitly in a crowded maths lesson and is worth a meaningful share of the subject's marks.

Criterion D, applying mathematics in real-life contexts, is the second underserved strand. It rewards judgement: choosing a model, stating its assumptions, and saying what the answer means in the situation described. Students who are strong calculators often score poorly here because they compute and stop. Both of these are teachable, and together they are where an MYP maths tutor earns their fee rather than in re-explaining topics the student already understands.

05

The Personal Project and service as action: what is assessed and what is not

Two parts of the MYP generate a lot of family anxiety and are frequently misunderstood in opposite directions. The Personal Project, completed in the final MYP year, is assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal as the evidence base. Service as action is a requirement of the programme that students document and reflect on, and it is not a graded subject. Families often over-prepare the second and under-plan the first.

For the Personal Project, the highest-value intervention is early and takes a single session: narrowing a goal until it can actually be evaluated against the criteria. A student who intends to raise awareness about something has nothing assessable; a student who intends to design, test and revise a specific thing, documenting each decision, has a project with marks attached. Catching that in week two rather than month four changes the entire outcome, and it is the cheapest useful hour in the MYP.

The second intervention is the process journal, which students complete retrospectively as paperwork and thereby destroy as evidence. Teaching a student to log a decision and the reason for it, in five minutes, on the day it happens, is a habit that carries the project. The third is the reflection, where the criterion wants a judgement on what was learned and what would be done differently, not a narrative of what happened.

What a tutor may not do is produce any part of it. We will not write, draft, restructure to completion or supply content for a Personal Project, and any service that offers to is handing your child a malpractice risk rather than a shortcut. We say that to students at the first project session rather than leaving it implied, because a fifteen-year-old under deadline pressure deserves a clear line. Legitimate support is questioning the goal, teaching journal discipline and giving feedback on the student's own writing.

06

Why two students with the same knowledge get different criterion marks

  • Five ATL categories: communication, social, self-management, research, thinking
  • A low criterion mark is often an ATL problem with a subject label
  • Research skills lift marks across several subject groups at once
  • Task staging and deadlines are coachable without subject knowledge

The answer is approaches to learning, the five skill categories that run across every MYP subject: communication, social, self-management, research and thinking. They are not graded as a subject and they are the reason two students who know the same content produce work that sits in different bands. A student who cannot plan a multi-stage task will submit something incomplete; a student who cannot evaluate a source will cite a weak one confidently; a student with poor self-management will produce good work late.

This matters for how a parent reads a report. A criterion mark that is lower than the student's knowledge warrants is often an approaches-to-learning problem wearing a subject label. Research skills explain a surprising share of individuals and societies marks. Self-management explains a surprising share of design and arts marks, where documented process is assessed. Thinking skills explain the gap between a student who can explain and one who can evaluate.

It also matters for what tutoring should do. Teaching research skills properly, which means source evaluation, note organisation and knowing when enough has been gathered, improves marks in several subject groups at once. So does teaching a student to break a task into stages with its own deadlines. These are unglamorous sessions and they have the broadest effect of anything available, which is why we often propose them when a family came asking for content help.

For an Al Twar family there is a practical note. These skills are precisely the ones a parent can reinforce without any subject knowledge: asking a child which stage of the task they are on, whether the source they are using would persuade someone who disagreed, and what they would change if they started again. That costs nothing and it is the kind of support that compounds across the whole programme.

07

What MYP support costs, and where coverage runs thin

Price in this market does not track MYP competence, which is the most useful thing to know before comparing quotes. The published bands, read in October 2026 and attributed to their publishers, are: Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end; qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200; IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 survey agreeing; in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 per Bestimate and up to AED 500 independently; and BartyED advertising AED 650 at the premium end.

What matters for MYP is that the premium end of that ladder is priced for Diploma work. A tutor at AED 650 an hour may never have read an MYP task sheet, while a mid-band tutor at AED 200 may have marked them weekly for years. For an MYP 3 or MYP 4 student the mid band with genuine MYP experience is the better purchase, and we would rather say so than sell the more expensive hour. The exception is MYP 5 preparation for the Diploma transition, where Diploma experience is exactly what the block needs.

Monthly, which is how households decide, Bestimate's survey puts a weekly one-hour session at roughly AED 240 to 600 for budget work, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more at specialist level, with advertised packages at around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. None of these figures is an IB Gram price; we publish a free trial lesson and a consultation instead.

On coverage, our position is stated rather than concealed. MYP sciences and mathematics are reasonably covered by UAE-based tutors. MYP Design, Arts, the less common language acquisition phases and interdisciplinary unit support are thinner, and a Personal Project supervisor with real MYP experience is scarcer still. Where no UAE-based specialist is free we say so before you book and offer a wider-pool tutor working Gulf Standard Time at the same band, rather than placing a Diploma tutor and letting the mismatch emerge in week three.

What an Al Twar parent can establish for nothing

Four things, none of which costs anything, and together they improve the purchase more than comparing tutoring websites does. The first is the criterion profile. Ask the MYP coordinator or subject teacher for the four criterion marks on recent tasks rather than the reported grade. A profile with one criterion a band behind the others is a precise instruction about what to buy; a grade on a report conceals it entirely.

The second is the task sheet. Look at the next one your child brings home, find the command terms, and ask your child what each is asking them to produce. If the answer is vague you have found the problem yourself, free, and you can buy a short block aimed at exactly that rather than a term of general subject help. For interdisciplinary units, ask the school for the unit's own assessment criteria, which teachers provide readily.

The third is the stream and route. For Arabic, ask which stream your child is placed in, since KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and prohibits combined classes for both groups because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. For mathematics in MYP 4 and 5, ask whether your child is on the standard or extended route and what evidence placed them there.

The fourth is the permit, which is free and therefore a clean honesty test. The UAE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's own private tutor licensing service, which lists a two-working-day completion time. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so disregard any figure quoted at you. Note also that IB Gram holds no accreditation, approval or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or the IB, and occupies no UAE premises.

Where we tutor

Al Twar and where MYP students here come from

MYP candidates in this part of Dubai are drawn from a wide ring of districts into a small number of continuum schools, which is why the cohort is thin on any one street.

Al Twar 1, 2 and 3

Villa housing with IB continuum provision locally, which makes Al Twar one of the few points of real MYP density in this half of Dubai.

Al Qusais

Immediately north, with dense school provision that is mostly not IB. An MYP student here is often the only one in their building, so peer comparison is unhelpful.

Al Nahda

North-east on the Sharjah boundary, apartment-dense, sharing Al Twar's school cluster. Al Nahda and Al Twar MYP students are frequently in the same class.

Mirdif

South-east with its own schools, mostly British curriculum. Families here often consider the Al Twar continuum provision specifically for the MYP route.

Al Khawaneej

East and lower density, with long bus routes that push the first usable evening session past six for most households.

Al Garhoud

West past the airport, with Diploma provision and the destination for a good share of this area's MYP 5 students once the programme ends.

Muhaisnah

North-east along the Sharjah road, and a frequent source of mid-year transfers into and out of MYP, which creates specific and urgent catch-up needs.

Dubai Festival City

West towards the creek, with international provision on term patterns that may differ from the local cluster's by a week.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the criterion marks and a task sheet

Four numbers per subject from recent tasks, plus a photograph of a real task sheet. Those two tell us more than any description of the problem, because they show both where the profile dips and whether the command terms are being decoded.

  2. 02

We test for MYP experience, not IB experience

Tutors are matched on having marked MYP work against descriptors in your child's subject group. Diploma experience is not a proxy for it, and we would rather tell you a match will take a few extra days than place a Diploma tutor.

  3. 03

    Free trial lesson

A full session at no cost and no card details. Use it to ask what interdisciplinary units are assessed on and what a phase means in language acquisition, and watch the tutor work from the task sheet rather than from a textbook.

    One criterion, one block

Blocks target a single criterion rather than a whole subject, because that is how the marks move. Personal Project work is dated against the school's own internal deadlines, which you get from the coordinator.

Review against the next reported marks

We review on the criterion profile rather than on impressions. Sometimes the honest answer is that the gap is an approaches-to-learning problem, a different subject, or a conversation with the school rather than more hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

MYP literacy is treated as the scarce skill

In this part of Dubai most IB knowledge is Diploma knowledge. We match on having marked MYP tasks against descriptors, because task sheets, phases and interdisciplinary criteria are not in a Diploma teacher's working knowledge.

Command terms taught as the mechanism

MYP command terms are arranged by cognitive demand and the descriptor bands match them, so a student who explains where the task said analyse is capped. Teaching that decoding transfers to every subject group at once.

Interdisciplinary units handled properly

They are assessed against their own criteria, and the marks sit in the synthesis rather than in either subject. We ask the school for the unit's criteria before the session, which is itself the test of whether a tutor has done this before.

Phases explained rather than assumed

Language acquisition places students by proficiency, not year group, so comparing grades across phases is meaningless. The diagnosis is which of the four criteria is trailing, and the response differs completely by criterion.

Mid band recommended where it is better

A premium tutor priced for Diploma work may never have read an MYP task sheet. For MYP years we will recommend a mid-band tutor with real MYP experience, which costs you less and works better.

Coverage limits stated and no regulator claims

Design, Arts, later language phases and Personal Project supervision are thinner in the UAE-based pool, and we say so before you book. IB Gram holds no accreditation from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or the IB, and runs no UAE premises.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Twar: your questions answered

Is a Diploma tutor able to teach my MYP child?+

Sometimes, and it is not safe to assume it. The Diploma and the MYP assess differently: Diploma technique is drilled against past papers and mark schemes, while MYP work is judged against descriptors using command terms arranged by cognitive demand. A Diploma specialist may never have read an MYP task sheet, may not know that interdisciplinary units carry their own criteria, and may not know that language acquisition places students by phase. Test for MYP experience specifically rather than taking IB experience as a proxy.

What are command terms and why do they decide my son's mark?+

They are the verbs on an MYP task sheet, arranged by cognitive demand, and the descriptor bands are written to match them. A strand asking a student to state wants a short accurate answer; explain wants reasons; analyse wants the parts and the relationships between them; evaluate or justify wants a judgement with evidence and limitations. A student who explains where the task said analyse cannot reach the top band however much they know. Decoding those verbs is teachable in a few sessions and transfers to every subject.

Does IB Gram send an MYP tutor to our villa in Al Twar?+

No. IB Gram provides no home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. MYP tuition for an Al Twar family is delivered one-to-one over live video, with a shared screen for worked problems, annotated drafts and the task sheet open beside the descriptor. Given how thinly MYP-literate tutors are spread across this part of Dubai, that is how the matching problem gets solved: the tutor is chosen for having marked MYP work rather than for living nearby.

How are interdisciplinary units assessed?+

Against their own criteria, not against the criteria of the two subjects they combine, which is the fact that causes most of the disappointment. The marks sit in the synthesis: using grounding from both disciplines together to say something neither would produce alone, explaining why the integration was worth doing, and then judging what the approach allowed and limited. Students typically write two separate answers side by side and narrate the activities. Ask the school for the unit's own criteria; teachers provide them readily.

Why is my daughter in a different language phase from her classmates?+

Because language acquisition places students by proficiency rather than by year group, across six phases. A capable older student who started the language recently may sit in an early phase, while a younger student who hears it at home may sit in a later one. The phases describe a continuum and the year group says nothing about it. One consequence is that comparing grades across phases is meaningless, since a 6 in an early phase and a 6 in a later one are deliberately different achievements.

My child reads well in French but freezes when speaking. What helps?+

Targeted work on the specific criterion that is trailing, which here is the oral and interactive one rather than vocabulary. Language acquisition assesses listening, reading, speaking and writing separately, and students are frequently uneven across them. Buying general language tutoring for an uneven profile spreads the hours over three skills that are already fine. Ask which criterion is lowest, then buy practice in that one: unprepared speaking, with a tutor who will not fill the silences, is what changes it.

Do Arab and non-Arab students study Arabic in the same class?+

No, and that is a requirement rather than a preference. Arabic is mandatory in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes for both groups strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. KHDA also requires Standard Arabic as the main language of instruction for first-language Arabic. The stream decides what the expectations are, so establish it before arranging any support.

Should my child take standard or extended MYP mathematics?+

It depends on where they are heading and the school decides it on its own evidence, which it will share if asked. The extended route covers additional content at greater demand and is better preparation for an analytical Higher Level route in the Diploma or for a science Higher Level. The standard route covers the core of the same framework and loses nothing for most other destinations, while giving back time in a week that already holds eight subject groups. Raise the question in MYP 4 rather than MYP 5.

Where do MYP maths marks actually go missing?+

Mostly in criterion B, investigating patterns, on both routes. Students find the pattern, state it, and consider the task finished. The criterion asks them to generalise it, express the generalisation correctly and justify why it holds, and that final step is rarely taught explicitly in a crowded lesson. Criterion D, applying mathematics in real-life contexts, is the second underserved strand: it rewards choosing a model, stating assumptions and saying what the answer means, and strong calculators often compute and stop.

Does a polished final product carry the Personal Project mark?+

No. It is marked on criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal providing the evidence, rather than on the quality of the finished object alone. That misconception is behind most of the disappointment this component causes. A student can build something impressive and score modestly because the documented process is thin, and a student can produce something modest and score well because the planning and reflection are rigorous. Confirm the version of the criteria in force with your child's coordinator.

How early should the Personal Project be started?+

Earlier than the school's deadline implies, because the slowest and most valuable stage is narrowing the goal. A student intending to raise awareness about something has nothing assessable; one intending to design, test and revise a specific thing while documenting each decision has a project with marks attached. Settle that in the first weeks, establish the journal habit of logging a decision and its reason on the day it happens, and the rest of the project becomes considerably easier to supervise honestly.

Is service as action graded?+

No. It is a requirement of the programme that students engage with and document, reflecting on what they did and what it meant, rather than a graded subject with criterion marks. Families frequently over-prepare it and under-plan the Personal Project, which is assessed. The useful parental contribution is to make sure the documentation actually happens as the activity happens, rather than being reconstructed later, and then to leave it alone. Tutoring is rarely the right purchase here.

Why do two students with the same knowledge get different marks?+

Approaches to learning, the five skill categories running across every MYP subject: communication, social, self-management, research and thinking. They are not graded as a subject and they explain most of the gap. A student who cannot stage a multi-part task submits something incomplete; one who cannot evaluate a source cites a weak one confidently; one with weak self-management produces good work late. A low criterion mark is frequently an approaches-to-learning problem wearing a subject label.

Is an expensive tutor better for MYP work?+

Usually not, and this is one place where paying more reliably buys less. The premium end of the Dubai market, with BartyED advertising AED 650 an hour, is priced for Diploma work, and Diploma expertise does not include having marked MYP tasks against descriptors. For an MYP 3 or MYP 4 student a mid-band tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 with real MYP experience is the better purchase. The exception is an MYP 5 block preparing for the Diploma transition, where Diploma experience is the point.

What should I ask an MYP tutor in the first conversation?+

Three questions that separate MYP experience from Diploma experience in about two minutes. What are interdisciplinary units assessed on? What does a phase mean in language acquisition, and how does it differ from a year group? And how does a command term change the response a strand expects? Precise answers to those indicate somebody who has worked inside the programme. General enthusiasm about holistic education, or an answer that reaches for past papers and mark schemes, indicates somebody who has not.

How can I help without knowing the subjects?+

More than you would expect, because the broadest-effect skills need no subject knowledge. Ask your child which stage of the task they are currently on, and whether the stages have their own deadlines. Ask whether the source they are using would persuade somebody who disagreed with them. Ask what they would change if they started again. Those three questions reinforce self-management, research and reflection, which between them explain a large share of criterion marks across every subject group, and they cost nothing.

Test for the programme, not for the brand

If you are looking for an IB MYP tutor in Al Twar, two free steps will tell you most of what you need. Ask the coordinator or subject teacher for the four criterion marks on recent tasks rather than the reported grade, and look at the next task sheet your child brings home to see whether they can tell you what each command term is asking for. Then put the three MYP questions on this page to any tutor you consider, including ours. The trial lesson costs nothing, needs no card details, and should be run from your child's own task sheet. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
