IB MYP Tutor in Al Sufouh

Parents who ask about an IB MYP tutor in Al Sufouh often start from a strange complaint: the evening looks empty. There is no worksheet, no page of exercises, no obvious homework to check, and a report card of criterion letters that gives no rank and no percentage. This page explains what MYP work actually is, year by year, how much of an evening each year needs, and how to benchmark a child with no external exam to measure against.

IB & IGCSE in Al Sufouh

Why an MYP evening looks empty, and usually is not

A British-curriculum Year 9 parent can tell whether work is happening. There are exercises, a textbook, a set of questions due Thursday, a percentage on a topic test. An MYP parent in Al Sufouh has none of that. Their child is working on a unit, has a summative task in three weeks, and in the meantime appears to be reading, thinking, taking photographs of something for a process journal and occasionally not working at all. The report card, when it comes, contains four numbers out of 8 per subject and no rank, no percentage and no comparison with anyone.

The result is a specific kind of anxiety that produces specific bad decisions. Some families buy a weekly tutor to create visible activity, which fills the evening without touching the criterion that is low. Others buy nothing until MYP 5, when a Personal Project deadline makes the problem suddenly legible. Both responses come from the same cause: no instrument for telling whether a child is on track. This page is mostly an attempt to supply one.

It helps to know what the work actually is. The MYP has eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria marked out of 8 - a raw 32 that the school converts to a 1-7 grade using its own published boundaries. Criteria reward documented process as much as correct answers: a conjecture tested and generalised, a method another person could follow, sources interrogated rather than summarised, a reflection that names a specific decision and its consequence. That work is slower than exercises and far less visible, which is why an MYP evening can be productive and look idle.

Al Sufouh is a useful place to write this from, because the strip between Sheikh Zayed Road and the coast holds full IB continuum campuses alongside Knowledge Park, Internet City and Media City. Families here frequently keep a child in one school from FS1 to Year 13, inside one assessment framework the whole way. That is a real advantage and it has one blind spot, covered later on this page: a continuum student may reach DP1 having never been measured against anybody outside their own school.

On delivery, stated before anything else: IB Gram teaches Al Sufouh students one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer in India only. For MYP work the material is the school's own unit documents and the student's marked tasks, which annotate better on a shared screen than across a table, and the small pool of genuinely MYP-experienced tutors in this city is distributed by where the IB schools are rather than by residential street.

At a glance

  • MYP work is project-shaped, so a productive evening can look idle
  • Four criteria of 8 per subject group, converted to a 1-7 grade by school boundaries
  • No rank, no percentage and no external benchmark until the end of MYP 5 at the earliest
  • A continuum student may reach DP1 never having been measured outside their school
  • Buying visible activity is the commonest MYP tutoring mistake
  • Four practical benchmarking methods are set out on this page
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Sufouh's campuses include full continuum provision, so the MYP here is usually the middle of a long single-system journey. That changes what each stage is for.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary inquiry with descriptive reporting and no external assessment, closing with the Year 6 Exhibition. Children arrive in the MYP able to ask questions and often without the sustained writing volume that criterion-marked tasks will start demanding in Year 7.

Several Al Sufouh and nearby campuses run the PYP as the start of a continuum through to the Diploma. The useful Year 6 intervention for a family here is writing stamina rather than content, since MYP Criterion C in Language and Literature asks for more sustained text than most PYP classrooms require.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 (MYP 1-5)

Middle Years Programme

Five years, eight subject groups, four criteria each marked out of 8. Units are framed by key concepts, related concepts and global contexts, with Approaches to Learning skills taught across subjects. Assessment is internal and teacher-marked, with the Personal Project in MYP 5 and eAssessment at some schools.

The programme in your search, and the longest stretch of the continuum. In Al Sufouh it sits beside British-curriculum schools running IGCSE in the same year groups, which is why MYP parents here receive confident advice about past papers and revision guides that does not apply to their child at all.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, scored out of 45. Assessment becomes largely external for the first time, with Internal Assessments carrying around a fifth of most subject grades.

The point at which a continuum student meets external examiners. The MYP criterion profile predicts this reasonably well: strong investigation and reflection marks travel into Internal Assessment work, while consistently weak reflective criteria predict a struggle with coursework load rather than with content.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

DP courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. Uncommon in Dubai; check the current KHDA school listing rather than an older guide, as provision shifts year to year.

Where it exists within reach of Al Sufouh, the MYP Personal Project is good preparation for the CP reflective project, since both are assessed on documented process. The academic-honesty boundary is identical, and worth agreeing with any tutor before work starts.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The eight MYP subject groups and two cross-cutting components, with a note on what the work looks like at home in each - which is the thing parents in this area most often cannot see.

Mathematics

Standard and Extended, MYP 1-5

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Investigating patterns, C Communicating, D Applying in real-life contexts. At home, B and D look like a child staring at a problem rather than doing exercises, because both require a conjecture, test cases and a generalisation rather than practice questions.

Sciences

Integrated or separate, MYP 1-5

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Inquiring and designing, C Processing and evaluating, D Reflecting on impacts. At home, B and C look like planning and data tables, and D looks like reading about an issue - which parents frequently mistake for not working.

Language and Literature

English, Arabic and other school languages

Criteria A Analysing, B Organizing, C Producing text, D Using language. The visible work is drafting, and the invisible work is planning structure. Strong readers lose B marks precisely because they skip the invisible part and write straight through.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Criteria A Comprehending spoken and visual text, B Comprehending written and visual text, C Communicating, D Using language. Phase placement matters more than year group, and a child advanced too early looks weak on all four criteria when the real issue is placement.

Individuals and Societies

History, Geography, Economics strands

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Investigating, C Communicating, D Thinking critically. Research-heavy, so the evening work is reading and source selection. A pile of printed sources is not progress; a short note on why two were discarded is.

Design

Product and Digital Design

Criteria A Inquiring and analysing, B Developing ideas, C Creating the solution, D Evaluating. The design cycle is the assessment, so the documentation is the subject. Thinly staffed by tutors across Dubai, which is worth knowing before a request is made late.

Arts

Visual Arts, Music, Drama

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Developing skills, C Thinking creatively, D Responding. The process journal is the evidence base for B and C; practice at home without journalling produces improvement that cannot be assessed.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Criteria A Knowing and understanding, B Planning for performance, C Applying and performing, D Reflecting and improving. The written planning and reflection tasks are the ones skipped at home, and they are half the available marks.

Interdisciplinary units

All MYP years

Assessed on synthesis across subject groups against their own criteria. Run very differently school to school, so the task-specific clarification is essential. A tutor's experience at one school transfers poorly here.

Personal Project

MYP 5, Year 11

Criteria A Planning, B Applying skills, C Reflecting, assessed on the process journal and report rather than the product. A tutor may teach project management, questioning and reflective writing; every word of the journal and report must be the student's own.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of working, chosen by MYP year group rather than by subject. All run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

Short early-years block in MYP 1 to MYP 3

Three to six sessions aimed at translation rather than content: showing a younger student what each criterion band actually looks like, using exemplars and their own marked work. Most of the available gain in the early MYP years comes from this and then stops, so the block is deliberately short.

  • Annotated exemplars at two or three bands for the same task
  • The student's own task re-read against the descriptor
  • Designed to end rather than to continue weekly
  • Suits a child whose grades dropped on arrival from another system

Weekly criterion work in MYP 4 and MYP 5

One subject group, one named target criterion, weekly, built from the school's task-specific clarifications and the student's marked summatives. The older MYP years carry enough summative volume to justify a continuing arrangement, which the younger years generally do not.

  • Target criterion named in writing before the first lesson
  • Work built from the school's clarification grid
  • Feedback in descriptor bands, never percentages
  • Paused in the week a major summative is due

MYP 5 project and transition coaching

Personal Project process support and preparation for the Diploma Programme or another route. Covers project management, journalling, reflective writing and the coursework habits DP Internal Assessments will demand. Nothing is written or edited for the student.

  • Journal habits that produce real evidence for Criterion B
  • Reflection prompts that get past general statements
  • Honest reading of the criterion profile against DP coursework
  • Academic-honesty boundaries agreed in session one

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Sufouh

01

What MYP homework actually is, and how to tell whether it is happening

An IB MYP tutor in Al Sufouh spends a surprising amount of the first conversation explaining what the work is, because the absence of exercises reads as the absence of work. MYP tasks are mostly project-shaped: a unit runs for several weeks, builds towards a summative task assessed against two or three criteria, and the preparation is reading, planning, data gathering, drafting and journalling rather than answering questions. There is often nothing to mark on a Tuesday evening, and that is by design rather than by neglect.

The practical problem this creates for a parent is that the usual signals do not work. You cannot check completed exercises. You cannot see a percentage. You cannot ask whether the homework is done, because the honest answer from a conscientious student is often 'sort of'. What you can do is ask three questions that work in this programme: what is the summative task and when is it due, which criteria is it assessed on, and what has been done towards it this week. A student working properly answers all three. A student drifting cannot answer the second.

The second thing worth knowing is where the invisible work is. In Mathematics, Criterion B wants a conjecture, test cases and a generalisation, which looks like a child sitting still. In Sciences, Criterion D wants reflection on the social and ethical dimension of a scientific issue, which looks like reading articles. In Individuals and Societies, Criterion B wants sources selected and evaluated, which looks like browsing. All three are the work. A pile of printed sources is not evidence of progress; a note explaining why two were discarded is.

This is also why buying a weekly tutor to create visible activity is the commonest and most expensive MYP mistake in this area. An hour of worked examples produces something a parent can see and addresses Criterion A, which was usually not the problem. The useful purchase is a diagnosis against the criterion that is actually low, which may well conclude that no weekly arrangement is needed at all.

02

The five MYP years, and how much of an evening each one needs

The MYP is not one programme with five instances. MYP 1 and MYP 5 differ in demand, in what goes wrong, and in how much of an evening they should reasonably occupy. Treating them the same is how a Year 7 student ends up with a weekly tutoring commitment they do not need and a Year 11 student ends up with none when the Personal Project is due.

In the early years the demand is modest and the failure is translation. A child who has never been marked against a descriptor produces competent work, scores 4, and reads that as a judgement. The whole fix is reading exemplars at different bands and annotating them against the criterion wording, which takes a few sessions and then stops being useful. An MYP 1 or MYP 2 student needing a weekly tutor for two years is a rare case, and a provider who proposes one should be asked why.

The middle years are where documented process starts being demanded in earnest, and where most of the genuine tutoring need in the MYP sits. Sciences wants a designed investigation; Mathematics wants investigation and real-world modelling; Individuals and Societies wants sources interrogated. Students who are quick arrive at conclusions and do not show the working that the criterion rewards. This is the point at which a weekly arrangement in one subject group earns its cost.

The final two years add volume and then the Personal Project. MYP 4 is where eight subject groups, their four criteria each and the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies requirements fill the week completely - and where the problem becomes organisational rather than academic. MYP 5 adds the Personal Project, possible eAssessment and the route decision. The table below gives a realistic evening demand for each year, assuming the Al Sufouh commute pattern described earlier.

THE FIVE MYP YEARS: DEMAND, FAILURE MODE AND REALISTIC EVENING LOAD

03

The Al Sufouh continuum advantage and its one blind spot

Families on this strip can often keep a child in one school from FS1 to Year 13, inside a single assessment framework the whole way. The advantages are real and underrated. The child never has to learn a new reporting language. The school knows them across a decade. PYP inquiry habits feed MYP investigation criteria, which feed DP Internal Assessments, and nobody has to translate between systems at a transition. For a parent, learning one framework properly instead of three is a genuine saving of effort.

The blind spot is benchmarking. MYP assessment is internal and teacher-marked against published criteria, with school-set grade boundaries converting a raw total out of 32 into a 1-7 grade. There is no rank, no percentage, no cohort comparison and no external marker until eAssessment at the end of MYP 5 - and not every school enters students for that. A continuum student can therefore arrive in DP1 having never once been measured by anybody outside their own school. If the school's boundaries are generous, or if a particular teacher marks kindly, nobody finds out until external assessment.

This is not an accusation about any school; it is a structural feature of internally assessed programmes, and the IB's moderation processes exist partly to address it. But it has a practical consequence for a parent on this strip: you should not treat a stable 6 across five years as proof of external readiness, and you should not panic about a 4 either, because neither number has been calibrated against anything you can see.

The next section sets out four things a family can do about it. None requires buying tuition, and the most useful of them is free. The reason it belongs on this page is that the single most common MYP tutoring enquiry we receive from this corridor is from a family whose child's grades are fine and who cannot shake the feeling that they do not know what the grades mean. That is a reasonable feeling and it has a reasonable answer.

04

Reading an MYP report card, and benchmarking without an exam

Start by reading the report differently from how it looks. Parents look for a position, a percentage and a trend. The MYP gives criterion marks, a grade from 1 to 7, and often a comment. The table below maps what you are looking for onto what the document actually provides, and what to do with it instead.

Then benchmark with four methods, in order of usefulness. First, ask for the school's grade boundary table - the conversion from a raw 32 to a 1-7 grade. It tells you how far your child is from the next grade, which a criterion profile alone does not. A student on 22 out of 32 might be one mark from a 6 or five marks from it, and those are different situations. Second, ask for exemplars at the band above your child's. Seeing a 7-8 band response to the same task is the most informative document available and schools generally provide it on request.

Third, ask whether the same criterion is low across subject groups. If Criterion D is low in Sciences, Individuals and Societies and Mathematics together, you are looking at one Approaches to Learning skill - critical thinking and reflection - rather than three subject weaknesses, and one intervention addresses all three. Fourth, and only if the first three leave you uncertain, have a specialist read two marked summatives and the clarification grids and give you an external opinion on where the work sits against the descriptors. That is a single session rather than a weekly arrangement, and for most families in this corridor it is the right purchase.

What none of these methods gives you is a national percentile, because the MYP does not produce one. A family that needs that kind of reassurance should know it is not available in this programme and should not buy tutoring in an attempt to manufacture it. What is available is a clear account of which criterion is low, how far from the next grade the student is, and whether the gap is subject knowledge or a transferable skill.

05

What MYP tutoring costs here, measured against what school already buys

A useful comparison nobody makes: you are already paying for teaching hours. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private-school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion, so your school fee is a known and currently fixed quantity. Divide your own annual invoice by the number of taught hours in the school year and you get your actual cost per teaching hour. Most families in this corridor have never done that sum, and doing it reframes every tutoring quote they will receive.

Against that figure, the published tutoring market looks like this. Budget online tuition starts at AED 33-52 an hour from Tutopiya and AED 45-65 from EdFlik. A qualified subject tutor working online runs AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists sit at AED 200-450 and upwards, TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home one-to-one with travel included runs AED 180-500, Bestimate quoting AED 180-350. Premium named or examiner-led tutors reach AED 500-650, BartyED publishing AED 650. Monthly estimates for a weekly hour run AED 240-600 budget, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

For the MYP specifically, two of those bands are poor value and one is actively misleading. The budget band buys supervision and question-bank drilling, and the MYP has no question bank, so what you get is an hour of worked examples addressing Criterion A. The premium band sells examiner credentials, and MYP assessment is internal and teacher-marked, so examiner status is close to irrelevant here. What the MYP needs is criterion literacy, and that lives in the AED 150-300 band.

The structural recommendation follows from the year-by-year table earlier on the page. In MYP 1 to MYP 3, buy a short block rather than a weekly arrangement - the available gain is in translation and it does not need twenty sessions. In MYP 4 and MYP 5, a weekly arrangement in one subject group is defensible. Across all years, a single diagnostic session each term on two marked summatives is often the whole of what a family on this strip actually needs. All figures above are other providers' published rates read during the October 2026 research round, quoted as market context rather than as an IB Gram price list.

06

Academic honesty across the MYP, not only the Personal Project

  • Every MYP summative is internally assessed coursework, so the boundary applies to all of them
  • Teaching, questioning and criterion feedback: legitimate
  • Writing, drafting, restructuring or 'tidying up': not
  • The test: would this sentence exist without the tutor?
  • Agree the boundary in words in the first session, and ask them to state it first

Most discussion of academic honesty in the IB attaches to the Personal Project, the Extended Essay and Internal Assessments, because those are the named pieces of assessed work. In the MYP the boundary applies much more widely than that, and the reason is structural: every summative task is internally assessed coursework. A Sciences investigation, an Individuals and Societies research task, a Language and Literature essay and a Design folder are all work submitted under the student's name and marked against criteria. The same rules apply to all of them.

What that means in a tutoring session is specific. A tutor may teach the skill, explain the criterion, show exemplars, ask why a paragraph is there, and point at where a draft falls short of a descriptor. A tutor may not write, draft, restructure or edit any part of a summative task, a process journal, an investigation write-up or a Personal Project report. The test is simple: if a sentence in the submitted work would not exist without the tutor, the line has been crossed, however gently.

This matters more in the MYP than families realise because the work is produced at home over weeks, often with a parent and a tutor both involved and nobody having agreed what involvement means. A well-meaning tutor who 'tidies up' a draft has done something that in the DP would be malpractice and in the MYP is at best a habit the student will carry into coursework that counts. Agree the boundary explicitly in the first session, in words, and ask the tutor to state it before you ask.

There are operators in this market selling completed assessed work outright, at published prices. That is an academic-integrity breach and an IB malpractice trigger, and the consequence falls on the student rather than on the seller. A family buying 'help with the Personal Project' without asking precisely what help means is buying a risk on their child's behalf. The legitimate version of that help is substantial and worth paying for - criteria explained, research questions stress-tested, reflections questioned until they say something specific - and it leaves every word of the submission the student's own.

07

Starting from Al Sufouh, and what we will not take on

  • Request the clarification grid, unit overview, marked task and boundary table first
  • Send the subject group, MYP year and criterion marks
  • Free full-length trial lesson judged on descriptor language
  • 4:30pm for a local gate; 5:00pm or later for an inland commute
  • We decline weekly arrangements where a short block is the honest answer

Begin with documents rather than a booking. Ask the school for the task-specific clarification covering the most recent summative, the unit overview, the marked task itself and the grade boundary table. Those four make criterion-level teaching possible; without the first one a tutor is guessing, however well they know the subject. Then send us the subject group, the MYP year, the criterion marks from the latest report and whatever the school has provided.

From there: we match on subject group and MYP experience, you take a full-length trial lesson at no cost with your child's own marked task on screen, and you judge whether the tutor works in descriptor language or in topics. Sessions run in Gulf Standard Time - 4:30pm is realistic for a student at an Al Sufouh gate, 5:00pm or later for a commute back from Al Barsha or Emirates Hills. Ramadan timings move to post-Iftar slots, and sessions pause in the week a major summative is due.

What we will decline. A weekly two-year arrangement for an MYP 1 student, because the available gain is a short block and selling more than that is selling activity. A request to produce or improve a summative draft, in any subject group. A request for a national percentile, because the MYP does not generate one and no provider can supply it honestly. And a late request in MYP Design, MYP Arts, several Language Acquisition phases or an interdisciplinary unit where we do not have somebody genuinely experienced - in those cases the answer is a waiting position or a no, not a generalist at specialist rates.

The fixed limits apply throughout. No home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. No claimed approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson - the IB authorises schools rather than tutors, and IB Gram holds nothing from any of them. No reproduction of IB documents; we reference and link the official sources and work from your school's own materials. No grade promises, and no published statistics about our own outcomes, because we cannot show the sample, date and method that would make them mean anything.

Where we tutor

Al Sufouh and the corridor its MYP students travel

These notes describe how much of an evening each area's commute leaves, because the MYP year-by-year table later on this page depends on knowing what time a child is genuinely available.

Al Sufouh

Campuses and Knowledge Park within minutes of each other, with the tram running the corridor. A student at a local gate is often home by 3:20pm, which makes this one of the few Dubai areas where a 4:30pm start is realistic for a younger MYP year group.

Dubai Marina

Dense and vertical along the tram line, with children commuting out to Al Sufouh and Al Barsha gates. Tower lift and parking add a quarter of an hour nobody counts, which matters most for MYP 1 and MYP 2 students whose attention window is shortest.

JBR

Beachside with the same gate pattern. Marina congestion rather than distance sets the arrival time, so an MYP 3 student here is realistically available from about 4:45pm rather than 4:30pm.

JLT

Across Sheikh Zayed Road with its own towers and a mixed school pattern. Parents often work locally in JLT or DMCC, which makes a 5pm session supervised by the household rather than requiring an arrangement.

The Greens and The Views

Low-rise and family-dominated inland of the tram, feeding Al Barsha and Al Sufouh gates. Short on paper, longer in practice at 3:20pm, and the area with the most MYP siblings in different year groups needing different evening shapes.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Established IB provision further inland. The longest return leg in this corridor, so MYP 4 and MYP 5 students here do better with weekend sessions for extended project work than with a tired weekday hour.

The Springs and The Lakes

Villa communities with large middle-school cohorts. A strong informal tutoring culture operates here, and it is predominantly IGCSE-shaped, which is the source of most of the mismatched advice MYP families in this corridor receive.

Bluewaters Island

Offshore with one access route and no school. Any arrangement that depends on travel at school-out time will start late, which is why online delivery is not a preference here so much as the only reliable option.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Sufouh

Al Sufouh, Knowledge Park and Media City

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask three questions at the kitchen table

What is the summative task and when is it due, which criteria is it assessed on, and what has been done towards it this week. A student working properly answers all three. A student drifting cannot answer the second, and that is the diagnosis before anybody is paid.

  2. 02

Request the boundary table and an exemplar

The grade boundary table tells you how many raw marks out of 32 separate your child from the next grade. An exemplar at the band above shows what that difference looks like in practice. Both are free and both are more informative than a first tutoring session.

  3. 03

Check whether one criterion is low across subjects

If the same criterion letter is low in several unrelated subject groups, the gap is an Approaches to Learning skill rather than several subject weaknesses, and one intervention covers all of them. This single check prevents most unnecessary multi-subject spending.

  4. 04

Buy one diagnostic session, not a term

A specialist reading two marked summatives with their clarification grids can tell you where the work sits against the descriptors and what would move it. For many families on this strip that session is the whole purchase, and it should be offered as such.

  5. 05

Review the criterion, with pauses built in

Every six to eight weeks, compare a new summative against the same criterion, and keep the submission-week pauses in the plan. A grade can stay still while a criterion rises. If the criterion has not moved after a block, change the target, the tutor, or stop.

We explain what the work is before selling help with it

MYP tasks are project-shaped, so a productive evening looks idle and anxious parents buy visible activity. An hour of worked examples addresses Criterion A, which is usually not the problem, and that is the most common wasted spend in this programme.

Different advice for MYP 1 and MYP 5

The early years need a short translation block and then nothing; the later years justify a weekly arrangement. Treating the five years as one programme is how a Year 7 ends up over-tutored and a Year 11 under-supported at the Personal Project deadline.

Benchmarking methods you can use for free

The boundary table, an exemplar at the band above, and a check for one criterion low across subjects answer most of what families on this strip are worried about, at no cost. We would rather you used those first than bought a term.

Criterion literacy, not examiner credentials

MYP assessment is internal and teacher-marked, so examiner status is close to irrelevant and the premium band is poor value here. What matters is whether the tutor can read a task-specific clarification, and that lives in the mid band.

The honesty boundary across all summatives

Every MYP summative is internally assessed coursework, so the rule is not limited to the Personal Project. Teaching and questioning yes; writing, restructuring or tidying a draft no, in any subject group, at any point.

Requests we turn down

Weekly two-year arrangements for MYP 1, draft improvement of any kind, a national percentile that does not exist, and late requests in subject groups where we have nobody genuinely experienced. Saying no is what makes the rest of this page worth reading.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Sufouh: your questions answered

My child seems to have no MYP homework. Is something wrong?+

Usually not. MYP tasks are project-shaped rather than exercise-shaped: a unit runs for weeks towards a summative assessed against two or three criteria, and the preparation is reading, planning, data gathering, drafting and journalling. There is often nothing to mark on a given evening. Test it with three questions instead of looking for worksheets: what is the summative task and when is it due, which criteria is it assessed on, and what has been done towards it this week. A student working properly answers all three. One who cannot answer the second is drifting, and that is the real signal.

How can I tell whether my child is on track with no rank or percentage?+

Use three free sources before buying anything. Ask the school for the grade boundary table, which shows how many of the 32 raw marks separate your child from the next grade - a student on 22 might be one mark away or five, and those are different situations. Ask for an exemplar at the band above for the same task, which shows what the difference looks like. Then check whether the same criterion letter is low across several subject groups, because that indicates a transferable skill gap rather than several subject problems. Those three answers cover most of what families worry about.

Does a continuum school from PYP to DP have any downside?+

One, and it is structural rather than a criticism of any school. MYP assessment is internal and teacher-marked with school-set grade boundaries, so there is no rank, no percentage and no external marker until eAssessment at the end of MYP 5 - which not every school enters students for. A child can therefore reach DP1 never having been measured by anybody outside their own school. The practical consequence is that a stable 6 across five years is not proof of external readiness, and a 4 is not proof of a problem, because neither has been calibrated against anything visible to you.

Should an MYP 1 student have a weekly tutor?+

Rarely, and a provider proposing a two-year weekly arrangement for a Year 7 should be asked why. The characteristic MYP 1 problem is translation: a child who has never been marked against a descriptor produces competent work, scores a 4, and reads it as a verdict. The fix is reading exemplars at two or three different bands and annotating them against the criterion wording, which takes a few sessions and then stops being useful. Most students move a band from that exercise alone. Buying twenty sessions to solve a three-session problem is buying visible activity rather than progress.

Which MYP year actually needs the most support?+

MYP 3 and MYP 4, for different reasons. MYP 3 is where designed investigations start being demanded in earnest, and where quick students lose marks because they reach conclusions without documenting the process the criterion rewards. MYP 4 is where eight subject groups at full demand plus the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies requirements fill the week, and the problem becomes organisational - evidence not logged as it happens, journal entries not made. MYP 5 then adds the Personal Project and the route decision. MYP 1 and MYP 2 need short blocks, not sustained arrangements.

What does my school fee work out to per teaching hour?+

Divide your own annual invoice by the number of taught hours in the school year, and you will have a figure almost no family in this corridor has calculated. It is worth doing because it reframes every tutoring quote you will receive. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that Dubai private-school fees would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, so the school side of the equation is currently fixed while tutoring is not. Against your own number, the published tutoring bands of AED 150-300 for a qualified online subject tutor become easier to judge.

Is a premium tutor worth it for MYP work?+

Generally not, and the reason is structural. Premium Dubai rates reach AED 500-650 and upwards, with BartyED publishing AED 650, and what they sell is examiner credentials and reputation. MYP assessment is internal and teacher-marked against criteria, with task-specific clarifications written by the classroom teacher, so there is no external paper for an examiner to have marked. What the MYP needs is someone who can read a clarification grid and work in descriptor language, and that capability sits in the AED 150-300 band. The budget band below it has even less to offer, since there is no question bank to drill.

Does the academic-honesty rule apply to ordinary MYP summatives?+

Yes, to all of them, and this surprises families who think the rule attaches only to the Personal Project. Every MYP summative is internally assessed coursework submitted under the student's name: a Sciences investigation, an Individuals and Societies research task, a Language and Literature essay, a Design folder. A tutor may teach the skill, explain the criterion, show exemplars and point at where a draft falls short. A tutor may not write, draft, restructure or tidy any part of it. The test is whether a sentence in the submitted work would exist without the tutor. If not, the line has been crossed.

What time can an MYP session start for a student at an Al Sufouh gate?+

4:30pm is realistic, which is earlier than most of Dubai. Al Sufouh gates release secondary year groups roughly between 2:50pm and 3:20pm, and a student living in the same district is often home by 3:20pm. Allow for changing and food and the window opens at about 4:30pm. For a younger MYP year group that window is also shorter at the other end - an MYP 1 student is not usefully working at 6:30pm. If your child commutes back from Al Barsha or Emirates Hills, 5:00pm or 5:15pm is the honest start time.

How do I know whether the gap is subject knowledge or a study skill?+

Look for the same criterion letter repeating across unrelated subject groups. The MYP teaches communication, social, self-management, research and thinking skills across subjects and then assesses them inside subject criteria. Low D marks in Sciences, Individuals and Societies and Mathematics together point at critical thinking and reflection rather than three subject weaknesses. Thin process journals in Design, Arts and Physical and Health Education point at self-management. The useful consequence is that one tutor working on the skill inside one subject group usually lifts the others, which costs far less than three subject tutors.

What should a first MYP session actually contain?+

A reading of your child's own marked summative against the task-specific clarification that the teacher marked it with, producing a statement of which criterion is low and what the band above requires. It should not be a diagnostic test, and it should not be a tour of the topic. If the tutor has not asked for the clarification grid and the marked task in advance, the session will be generic by necessity, because without those two documents there is nothing specific to work from in a programme that publishes no past papers.

Can MYP tutoring help with the Diploma decision at the end of MYP 5?+

It can supply evidence, not advice. A five-year criterion profile says something real about coursework readiness: strong investigation and reflection marks travel well into DP Internal Assessments, because both demand a question framed, a method justified, data handled honestly and limitations named. A student carrying consistent 3s and 4s on reflective criteria will find the Diploma's coursework load heavier than its content. A tutor can read that profile and teach the skills that close the gap. The decision itself belongs to the family, the school and the IB coordinator who knows the child.

My child moved from a British-curriculum school into MYP 3. What should we expect?+

A grade drop that is about format rather than ability. A student trained to produce correct answers writes the answer and stops, which scores on Criterion A and nothing else. The MYP's investigation and reflection criteria want the working visible: test cases, a method someone else could follow, a reflection naming a specific decision and its consequence. Content is rarely the problem for a transferring student. The first useful intervention is reading three exemplars at different bands against the descriptors, which frequently moves a band with no content teaching at all.

Which MYP subject groups can you not always cover?+

Design and Arts are thinly staffed by tutors anywhere in Dubai, several Language Acquisition phases are hard to match, and interdisciplinary units are harder again because the assessment varies so much between schools that experience at one transfers poorly to another. Mathematics, Sciences and Language and Literature are the easiest to cover. Where a combination is genuinely hard to staff the honest answers are a waiting position, a tutor in the same subject group who can work on the specific criterion, or no. We would rather say that than place somebody learning the framework alongside your child.

Can you tell me where my child sits nationally?+

No, and nor can anyone else honestly, because the MYP does not generate a percentile. Assessment is internal, teacher-marked against published criteria, with school-set boundaries converting a raw total out of 32 into a 1-7 grade. There is no cohort comparison, no national dataset and no rank. A provider offering one is inventing it. What is genuinely available is a clear account of which criterion is low, how many raw marks separate your child from the next grade, and whether the gap looks like subject knowledge or a transferable skill - and those three answers address most of what the percentile question is really asking.

Diagnose the criterion, then decide whether to buy anything

An MYP evening that looks empty is usually not, and an MYP report that gives no percentage is not hiding one. Ask for the boundary table and an exemplar at the band above, check whether one criterion is low across several subjects, and ask your child the three kitchen-table questions. If that leaves you uncertain, buy one diagnostic session on two marked summatives rather than a term of weekly lessons. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, from 4:30pm for a local Al Sufouh gate.
