IB MYP Tutor in Al Quoz 4

Finding an IB MYP tutor in Al Quoz 4 is harder than finding a Diploma one, because the Middle Years Programme is marked against criteria rather than a syllabus, and most tutors have never seen a criterion descriptor. A Year 9 in Al Quoz 4 is home by three thirty and in a sports club by four fifteen, so the hour has to fit around that too. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, from the early evening.

  • Criteria A to D taught as what they actually reward, descriptor by descriptor
  • Sessions from 16:30 for MYP year groups with earlier school finishes
  • Personal Project coached on process, never written for the student
  • ATL skills built into the work rather than taught as a separate course

IB & IGCSE in Al Quoz 4

Why MYP tutoring in Al Quoz 4 is a timetable problem and a criteria problem

Two things make MYP support different. The first is that the Middle Years Programme has no examinable syllabus in the way IGCSE does. Work is assessed against four published criteria per subject group, each scored nought to eight, and a student can know the content while consistently scoring four because they never address what criterion C actually asks for. A tutor who has not read the descriptors cannot fix that, however strong their subject knowledge is.

The second is the clock, and it runs differently from the Diploma one. MYP students in Dubai are eleven to sixteen, and secondary year groups in this part of the city generally finish between 14:30 and 15:15. Buses into Al Quoz 4 then arrive between about 15:00 and 16:00, earlier than for the Year 13s on the same routes. What fills the gap is activity: swimming, football, music, the after-school clubs that are a real part of the week in Dubai and that parents sensibly refuse to cancel for tuition.

The practical consequence is that MYP sessions here cluster at 16:30 and at 18:00, with very little in between, and that Saturday mornings are more valuable than they are for older students. A tutor with a fixed 17:00 slot and nothing else frequently cannot serve an MYP family at all. We ask about clubs before syllabus, because a plan that collides with a Tuesday swimming squad lasts about three weeks.

On delivery: IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. That is an India-only service. Lessons for Al Quoz 4 families run live online, one-to-one. For MYP specifically this matters twice over. It removes the tutor's drive, which is what makes a 16:30 start possible at all. And it widens the pool to people who have actually taught the criteria, which locally is a small group, because MYP is a minority programme inside a curriculum that accounts for 7% of private enrolment in Dubai.

Al Quoz 4 students attend schools spread from Al Safa to Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim, and the continuum schools among them run MYP straight into the Diploma without an IGCSE year. That route has one well-known weakness. Students arrive in Diploma year one strong on inquiry and investigation and noticeably weaker on quantitative fluency, because MYP asks less drilling of mathematical technique. The best time to address it is MYP 4 and 5, not Diploma year one, and it is the most useful thing a tutor can do for a student on that path.

Parents often come to this page after a report that gave a 5 in sciences without explaining why. MYP reporting is criterion-based, and a 5 can be arrived at from very different patterns: strong knowledge with weak evaluation, or the reverse. The first job of a tutor is to read the actual criterion scores rather than the summary grade, because those four numbers say precisely where the work is being lost.

At a glance

  • MYP is marked against four criteria per subject, each scored 0 to 8
  • Criterion totals out of 32 convert to a 1-7 grade by published boundaries
  • Secondary MYP year groups here finish between 14:30 and 15:15
  • After-school clubs, not homework, decide which slot is available
  • Continuum students need quantitative fluency built before Diploma year one
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP spans five years and then forks. What a tutor should be doing in MYP 2 bears almost no resemblance to MYP 5, and the fork at the end changes the priorities again.

MYPAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

MYP 1 to 3 — the foundation years

Eight subject groups studied each year: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design. Assessment is criterion-based from the start, and the skill being built is how to read a task sheet and answer the criterion in front of you rather than writing everything known about the topic.

In Dubai these year groups finish earliest, around 14:30 to 15:00, which makes a 16:30 session genuinely possible for an Al Quoz 4 family. It is also the cheapest stage to intervene, because habits formed here carry into MYP 5 and then into the Diploma.

MYPAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

MYP 4 and 5 — the bridge years

Content deepens and the Personal Project arrives in MYP 5, alongside optional on-screen eAssessment leading to the IB MYP Certificate. Subject criteria stay the same four per group, but the descriptors demand more independence: evaluating a method, justifying a choice, recognising the limitations of a model rather than listing them.

This is where the MYP-to-Diploma gap either closes or hardens. Al Quoz 4 students heading into Diploma provision in Al Barsha or Umm Suqeim benefit most from quantitative work here, particularly algebraic manipulation and handling of units.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

What MYP leads into

The Diploma assumes investigation skills MYP teaches well and arithmetic fluency MYP drills less. Students who come through MYP generally design better experiments than their IGCSE-educated classmates and solve equations more slowly. Knowing which side of that your child sits determines what a tutor should prioritise in MYP 5.

Several schools serving this neighbourhood run the full continuum, so the transfer is internal and the student stays put. That makes the gap easier to miss, because nobody changes school and nobody flags it.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The alternative fork at sixteen

Some families move from MYP into IGCSE at fourteen, usually when changing school. The adjustment is real: IGCSE rewards content recall and exam technique where MYP rewarded inquiry and reflection, and a student who has never sat a terminal paper needs explicit teaching on timing and command terms.

Because Al Quoz 4 families choose across three school clusters, this switch happens more often here than in neighbourhoods served by a single continuum school. A short transition block before Year 10 handles most of it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP requests from this neighbourhood concentrate in a few subject groups. Each one is listed with what the criteria actually reward, because that is where the marks sit.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Most lost marks sit in processing and evaluating: data presented without analysis, or a conclusion the results do not support.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5 · standard and extended

Knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The investigating-patterns criterion is the one students find alien, because it asks for a general rule and a justification rather than an answer.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Marks are lost on sourcing and on evaluation: describing two viewpoints is not the same as weighing them, and the descriptors are explicit about the difference.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Students write fluently and still score mid-band because they summarise rather than analyse. Coaching targets the move from what the text says to how it achieves its effect.

Language Acquisition

MYP phases 1-6

Comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Phase placement matters more than year group, and a student placed a phase too high struggles in a way that looks like weakness.

Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. The design cycle is marked as a process, so documentation of decisions earns marks that students often skip in favour of the finished product.

Personal Project

MYP 5

Planning, applying skills, and reflecting, supported by a process journal. Coaching covers scope, goal setting and the journal habit. The project itself and all of its writing must be the student's own work.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed against their own criteria: evaluating, synthesising and reflecting across two subject groups. Students treat these as double homework rather than a distinct task, which is where the marks go.

Approaches to Learning

MYP 1-5

Not a subject but a marked expectation inside every subject: research, thinking, communication, social and self-management skills. These are built inside subject work rather than taught separately.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns cover almost every MYP request here. All are delivered live over video, one-to-one.

Early evening weekly slot

Sixty minutes at 16:30 or 18:00, chosen around clubs rather than around the school day. For MYP 1 to 3 the shorter session is the right length; concentration at twelve or thirteen does not extend to ninety minutes of productive one-to-one work however willing the student is.

  • Slot agreed against the activity timetable, not just the bus
  • Sixty minutes for MYP 1-3; ninety only from MYP 4 where needed
  • Criterion scores reviewed each half term rather than overall grades

Criteria clinic before an assessment

A short block before a summative task. The tutor works from the actual task sheet and the criterion descriptors the school issued, so the student learns to read what criterion C wants and answer it. This is the highest-value MYP intervention and it is usually three or four sessions, not a term.

  • Built from the school's own task sheet and rubric
  • Teaches descriptor reading as a transferable skill
  • Finite block with a defined end point

Personal Project process coaching

Sessions through MYP 5 on scope, goal setting, the process journal and the report structure. The tutor questions the plan, flags where a goal is too broad to evidence, and gives feedback on what the student has written. The student makes every decision and writes every word.

  • Goal narrowed to something that can actually be evidenced
  • Process journal habit established early rather than reconstructed later
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, in writing they can show their supervisor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Quoz 4

01

Four criteria, thirty-two marks, one grade: how MYP actually scores

Every MYP subject group is assessed against four criteria, labelled A to D, each scored on a nought-to-eight scale. The four add to a maximum of thirty-two, and that total converts to a final grade from one to seven using published boundaries. A parent reading a report sees the seven-point grade. The useful information is the four numbers behind it, and schools will provide them.

The reason this matters is that identical grades hide opposite problems. Two Year 9 students can both receive a 5 in sciences. One scored seven for knowing and understanding and three for processing and evaluating: they know the content and cannot analyse data. The other scored four across all four criteria: an even, shallow performance needing something different entirely. A tutor who works from the grade rather than the criterion scores will choose wrongly about half the time.

The descriptors themselves are specific and public. Criterion wording distinguishes describing from explaining from evaluating, and it distinguishes applying a method from justifying the choice of method. Students lose marks not because they lack ideas but because they answer the wrong verb. A session spent reading the descriptor aloud with a student and marking their own last piece of work against it frequently moves a criterion by two marks, which is a grade boundary.

What this means practically for an Al Quoz 4 family is that the first request to the school should be for criterion-level data, not a general comment. Ask for the four scores in each subject group, across the last two summatives. With that, a tutor can tell you in one session where the work is leaking and whether it is the same leak in several subjects, which it very often is.

The MYP afternoon in Al Quoz 4, and where a session fits

A Diploma student's evening is shaped by homework. An MYP student's is shaped by activity, and that changes the scheduling question entirely. Middle year groups in the schools serving Al Quoz 4 finish between about 14:30 and 15:15, earlier than the sixth form, and buses deliver students home between roughly 15:00 and 16:00. Then the clubs begin.

Swimming squads, football training, music lessons and the school's own after-school programme occupy most weekday late afternoons for children of this age in Dubai, and they are not negotiable in most households, nor should they be. What that produces is a bimodal slot pattern: a window at about 16:30 for students whose activity is later or on another day, and a window at 18:00 for those who have already finished.

Almost nothing works at 17:00 for this age group in this neighbourhood, which is the exact hour most tutors have free. It is the single most common reason an MYP enquiry does not convert into a lesson, and it is a logistical mismatch rather than a shortage of good tutors. Online delivery helps because a tutor is not spending the gap between 16:30 and 18:00 driving somewhere; two different families can take the two different windows.

Saturday mornings carry more weight here than for older students. A ninety-minute Saturday session suits MYP 4 and 5 work that needs continuity — a mathematics investigation, a Design cycle write-up, a Personal Project planning session — while a short weekday slot handles consolidation. Families who set that pattern in September rarely change it, and families who try to fit everything into a weekday evening usually renegotiate by October.

The Personal Project, and what a tutor may touch

  • Narrow the goal in the first fortnight, not the second term
  • The process journal records decisions, not effort
  • Reflection marks depend on having rejected something and saying why
  • A tutor questions, teaches and gives feedback on the student's own draft
  • No tutor may write or restructure the project or its report

The Personal Project runs through MYP 5 and is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, supported by a process journal the student keeps throughout. It is the first genuinely independent piece of work most students meet, and the failure mode is almost always the same: a goal too broad to evidence, chosen enthusiastically in September and still unfocused in January.

The highest-value coaching happens at the start. A goal like 'learn about marine conservation' cannot be evidenced; 'design and test a three-session workshop on plastic waste for Year 5 students at my school' can. Narrowing the goal is a conversation, and it takes one session. Students who have it in the first fortnight produce projects that write themselves; students who do not spend the spring trying to retrofit a process journal they never kept.

The journal is the second thing. It is not a diary of effort, it is evidence of decisions, and the criteria reward it as such. A student who records why they rejected an approach has something to write about in the reflection; one who records only what they did has to invent a narrative later. Establishing the habit in the first month is worth more than any amount of help at the end.

The boundary is absolute and it is explained to the student in the first session. A tutor may question the goal, teach research and planning skills, ask whether a piece of evidence supports a claim, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not write, draft or restructure the project or its report, and the same applies to any Diploma coursework later. IB academic-honesty rules treat that as malpractice and the consequence falls on the student, not the tutor. Several services in this market sell completed coursework; that is what they are selling and it is worth recognising.

04

The MYP-to-Diploma gap, and closing it in MYP 5

Students who come through MYP arrive in Diploma year one with a recognisable profile. They design investigations well, write reflectively, and handle open-ended tasks with more confidence than classmates arriving from IGCSE. They are also, as a group, slower at algebraic manipulation, less practised at working to the clock, and less drilled on the kind of routine technique a terminal examination rewards.

This is not a criticism of the programme. MYP deliberately prioritises inquiry over drilling, and it produces better investigators for it. But Diploma assessment includes timed papers, and timed papers reward fluency. A student who understands how to find a gradient but takes ninety seconds over the arithmetic will not finish. The fix is practice, and MYP 5 is when there is time for it.

The specific items worth addressing before Diploma year one are consistent across subjects: rearranging formulae with confidence, handling indices and standard form, working with units through a calculation, reading values off a graph accurately, and completing a set of routine questions against a clock. None are conceptually demanding. All are habits, and habits take weeks rather than months.

For Al Quoz 4 families whose child is in a continuum school, nobody will flag this, because the student does not change school at sixteen. The transfer is internal, the teachers are often the same people, and the shift in assessment style arrives without an announcement. Asking a tutor to spend the spring of MYP 5 on fluency rather than content is, in our experience, the highest-return decision available on this route.

ATL skills: marked everywhere, tutored almost nowhere

Approaches to Learning sit underneath every MYP subject group: research, thinking, communication, social and self-management skills. They are not a separate course and there is no ATL examination, which is precisely why they get neglected. They nonetheless show up in criterion scores across every subject, because a student who cannot organise a long task or evaluate a source loses marks in sciences, in individuals and societies, and in the Personal Project simultaneously.

Self-management is the one that matters most at this age and the one parents in Al Quoz 4 most often describe without naming. A Year 9 who does the work but hands it in late, or who starts a two-week task the night before, is losing criterion marks for reasons that have nothing to do with ability. Breaking a task sheet into dated steps is a teachable procedure, and it is taught faster in a one-to-one session than in a classroom of twenty-four.

Research skills are the second. Students of this age search competently and evaluate sources poorly, which is a different problem from the one their parents had. Teaching a student to ask who produced a source and why, and to notice when three results are repeating the same original claim, improves individuals and societies criterion scores directly and helps every subsequent piece of written work.

The way to tutor ATL is inside subject work, never as a module. A session on a sciences investigation is also a session on planning and on evaluating sources, if the tutor is deliberate about naming what is being practised. Students who hear the skill named transfer it; students who only get the content do not. That is most of the difference between a tutor who improves one grade and one who improves several.

06

What MYP tuition costs here, and why it is priced oddly

MYP sits awkwardly in the Dubai tuition market, and the pricing shows it. Budget online tutoring is advertised from around AED 33 to AED 65 an hour, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65, in a band reaching roughly AED 150. A qualified subject tutor online is published at AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors quoting IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialists run AED 200 to AED 450 and beyond, TutorChase publishing AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 at the premium end.

The oddity is that MYP often gets quoted at the lower end on the assumption that younger students need less expertise, when the opposite is closer to true. MYP content is simpler than Diploma content and MYP assessment is less familiar. A tutor who has never read a criterion descriptor will teach the content competently and leave the criterion scores exactly where they were, which is the thing the family wanted changed.

In-home visits are their own band, AED 180 to AED 350 on Bestimate's figures and AED 200 to AED 500 for independent home tutors. For Al Quoz 4, where few tutors live, that premium is largely a journey. Monthly figures matter more at this age than hourly ones, since MYP support is usually a long, low-intensity arrangement rather than an exam sprint: Bestimate's estimate for one weekly hour runs AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market.

None of these are IB Gram prices; they are what the market publishes, cited so a family can check them. What we would say about value at this stage is that a short criteria clinic before a summative often achieves more than months of general support, because it changes how the student reads every task sheet afterwards. That is the cheapest useful purchase in MYP, and it is worth asking for by name.

Regulators, permits and the mandatory subjects on your child's timetable

  • Ask the school for criterion-level scores, not just the 1-7 grade
  • Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies are mandatory in Dubai
  • Mandatory instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid for two years

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described on u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi has ADEK, Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. For an MYP family the KHDA inspection report is the one public document that says anything about how the programme is actually being delivered.

KHDA also requires subjects that sit alongside the licensed international curriculum. Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools whatever curriculum they teach, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Mandatory instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit.

This has a direct effect on MYP, which already asks for eight subject groups. Adding mandatory subjects to eight groups fills a timetable completely, and it is why MYP students in Dubai have less discretionary study time than the programme model assumes. Parents who describe their child as having no time to practise are frequently describing an accurate timetable rather than a motivation problem.

On tutoring itself: the UAE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is administered by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and is granted free of charge for two years, with applications made through MoHRE's app, website or e-services and a two-working-day completion time listed. Tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published schedule of amounts. IB Gram holds no status with KHDA, the IB or any other body, and any platform implying otherwise should be treated carefully.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Quoz 4

What follows is about school finish times and after-school activity, because for this age group those are what decide whether a slot is usable.

Al Quoz 4

Residential pocket with little schooling inside it, so every MYP student is bussed out. Arrivals between about 15:00 and 16:00 for middle year groups, earlier than for Diploma students on the same routes.

Al Safa

Closest school cluster and shortest journeys, so MYP students from here are frequently home by three. A 16:30 slot works, and often a 16:00 one does too.

Al Manara

Short runs to Al Wasl Road schools. Families here most often ask for the earlier slot and then move it later in MYP 4 as homework volume rises.

Umm Al Sheif

Shares bus routes with Al Quoz 4 and has a heavy after-school sports culture, which is why the 18:00 slot is more popular here than the 16:30 one.

Al Barsha South

Longest routes along Al Khail Road. MYP students from this direction arrive closer to 16:00, which removes the early slot from the table entirely.

Al Sufouh

Reached via Sheikh Zayed Road with afternoon congestion around the Mall of the Emirates interchange. Saturday morning sessions are the reliable option for these households.

Dubai Hills Estate

Short internal journeys and schools with their own clubs on site, so students often return later having already done the activity. The 18:00 slot suits them best.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Quoz 4

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

This cluster holds most of the full IB continuum provision reachable from Al Quoz 4, meaning MYP runs straight into the Diploma in the same school. Students on that route change nothing at sixteen, which is convenient and makes the quantitative gap into Diploma year one easy to overlook.

  • Dubai American Academy
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Repton Al Barsha

Al Safa, Al Manara and Jumeirah

A mixed cluster where some schools run MYP and others run a British middle school into IGCSE. For an Al Quoz 4 family it means two children at neighbouring schools can be assessed on entirely different systems in the same year group, one against criteria and one against grade boundaries.

  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Jumeira Baccalaureate School
  • Jumeirah College
  • Horizon English School
  • Safa British School

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the criterion scores

Not the report grade but the four numbers behind it, for the last two summatives in the subject that worries you. Those four say whether the problem is knowledge, inquiry, analysis or reflection, and they frequently show the same weakness repeating across different subjects.

  2. 02

    Tell us the club timetable

Which afternoons are taken by swimming, football, music or the school's own programme. For MYP in Al Quoz 4 the activity schedule decides the slot far more than the bus does, and the 17:00 hour most tutors have free is usually the one hour a family cannot use.

  3. 03

    Bring a real task sheet

The actual summative task and the rubric the school issued. A tutor can then teach your child to read criterion C and answer it, using the document they will be marked against rather than a generic version of it.

  4. 04

Trial in the slot you want

A free one-to-one lesson at the time you intend to keep, so you test both the tutor and the hour. Ask the tutor afterwards which criterion they would target first and why; a specific answer is what you are looking for.

  5. 05

Review by criterion each half term

Progress is checked against movement in the four criterion scores, not against hours delivered. If criterion D has moved from three to five and criterion A was always strong, the plan should change rather than continue.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Tutors who have read the descriptors

MYP is marked against criteria, and a tutor who has never seen the descriptors will improve the content and leave the scores unchanged. Matching here filters on criteria experience first and subject knowledge second, which is the opposite of how most platforms sort.

Slots that fit a twelve-year-old's week

The MYP windows in Al Quoz 4 are around 16:30 and around 18:00, with clubs in between. Because lessons are online, two families can take the two different windows and no tutor is driving across Dubai in the gap.

Personal Project scoped, not written

Coaching concentrates on narrowing the goal and building the process-journal habit in the first month. The project and every word of its report must be the student's own work, and that is stated to the student at the start.

Fluency built before the Diploma

Continuum students arrive in Diploma year one strong on inquiry and slower on routine technique. Spending the spring of MYP 5 on algebraic fluency, units and timed practice is the highest-return work available on that route, and nobody else flags it.

Criteria clinics as finite blocks

Three or four sessions built from the school's own task sheet frequently move a criterion by two marks, which crosses a grade boundary. We would rather sell that than a year of general support, because it changes how the student reads every task afterwards.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Quoz 4: your questions answered

What does an MYP tutor do differently from a normal subject tutor?+

They work from the criterion descriptors. MYP has no examinable syllabus in the IGCSE sense; every subject group is assessed against four criteria scored nought to eight, and students lose marks by answering the wrong verb rather than by not knowing the content. A tutor who has read the descriptors will mark your child's last piece of work against them and show where the gap is. A tutor who has not will teach good subject content and leave the criterion scores where they were.

How does my child's MYP grade out of 7 get calculated?+

Four criteria per subject group, each scored nought to eight, giving a maximum of thirty-two. That total converts to a one-to-seven grade using published boundaries. The seven-point grade is what appears on the report, but the four numbers behind it carry the information. Two students with the same 5 can have opposite problems: one strong on knowledge and weak on analysis, the other evenly mid-band across all four. Ask the school for the criterion-level scores; they will provide them.

What time do MYP lessons usually run for families in Al Quoz 4?+

Around 16:30 or around 18:00, with very little in between. Middle year groups in the schools serving this area finish between about 14:30 and 15:15 and buses arrive home between 15:00 and 16:00, earlier than for sixth formers. The late afternoon then fills with swimming, football, music and school clubs. That produces two usable windows either side of the activity, and 17:00 — the hour most tutors have free — is the one that collides with everything.

Will a tutor travel to our home in Al Quoz 4 for MYP sessions?+

Not through IB Gram. We do not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is an India-only service. MYP lessons for Al Quoz 4 families run live online, one-to-one. For this age group the online format also solves a real scheduling problem, because a tutor who is not driving between appointments can take a 16:30 slot for one family and an 18:00 slot for another, which is exactly the pattern MYP families in this neighbourhood need.

Where exactly can a tutor assist on the MYP 5 Personal Project?+

With the process, yes, and that is where the help is actually needed. A tutor can question whether the goal is narrow enough to evidence, teach planning and research skills, establish the process-journal habit, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor cannot write, draft or restructure the project or its report. The usual failure is a goal chosen too broadly in September — 'learn about marine conservation' rather than something testable — and that is fixed in a single early conversation.

Why did my child's science criterion C score stay low all year?+

Processing and evaluating is the criterion MYP science students most often leave unaddressed, because it asks for analysis of the data and a judgement on the method's validity, and students instead present the data and restate the hypothesis. It reads like a complete answer and scores in the middle band. The remedy is mechanical: take the student's last investigation, read the descriptor aloud, and mark it together. Most students move two marks once they can see what the words are asking for.

Does MYP prepare a student properly for the IB Diploma?+

For investigation and independent work, very well. MYP students generally design better experiments and handle open-ended tasks more confidently than classmates arriving from IGCSE. What they tend to lack is fluency: faster algebraic manipulation, confident handling of units and standard form, and practice working against a clock, because MYP deliberately drills less routine technique. None of that is conceptually hard. It is habit, and the spring of MYP 5 is the right time to build it.

Is the investigating patterns criterion in maths really that different?+

Yes, and it is the one MYP mathematics students find most alien. It asks for a general rule describing a pattern and a justification for why that rule holds, not an answer for the cases tested. Students who are quick at arithmetic often score lowest here, because they finish the computation and stop. The teachable move is to write the rule in algebraic form and then test it against a case not yet used. That single habit lifts the criterion reliably.

What are ATL skills and do they really affect grades?+

Approaches to Learning are the research, thinking, communication, social and self-management skills that sit under every MYP subject group. There is no ATL exam, which is why they get neglected, but they show in criterion scores everywhere. A student who starts a two-week task the night before loses marks in sciences, in individuals and societies and in the Personal Project at once. These are best taught inside subject work, with the skill named explicitly so the student can transfer it.

How much does MYP tuition cost in Dubai compared with Diploma tuition?+

It is frequently quoted lower, on the assumption that younger students need less expertise. Budget online tuition is advertised from AED 33 to AED 65 an hour by Tutopiya and EdFlik, in a band to roughly AED 150; qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. For MYP the band matters less than whether the tutor knows the criteria, because content at this level is simple and the assessment model is not. Pay for criteria experience.

Should we switch from MYP to IGCSE at fourteen?+

It depends on where your child is heading and on whether you are changing school anyway. IGCSE rewards content recall and terminal exam technique; MYP rewards inquiry and reflection. A student moving across needs explicit teaching on timing and command terms, which they will not have met. A student staying in MYP into the Diploma keeps the inquiry advantage and needs fluency work instead. Neither route is better in general; the question is which gap you are prepared to close deliberately.

My child understands the work but hands it in late. Can tutoring help?+

Yes, and the target is self-management rather than content. Breaking a task sheet into dated steps, working backwards from the deadline, and building in a checkpoint before the final write-up are teachable procedures, and they move criterion scores because late or rushed work loses marks for reasons unrelated to ability. One-to-one is a better setting for this than a classroom of twenty-four, since the plan can be built around the actual week your child has, clubs included.

Is it better to book one MYP subject group or three together?+

Usually one, chosen by looking at the criterion scores across all of them. The common finding is that the same criterion is weak in several subjects — evaluation, or analysis — and fixing it in one subject transfers to the others at no extra cost, provided the tutor names the skill rather than only teaching the content. Tutoring three subject groups simultaneously at this age fills the week, costs three times as much, and often addresses one underlying habit three times over.

Do the mandatory UAE subjects leave time for MYP homework?+

Less than parents expect. Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA requiring separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in several of them and calculating instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit. Added to eight MYP subject groups, that fills a timetable. When a student appears not to be practising between sessions, the schedule is often the honest explanation rather than motivation, and a plan should account for it.

Start with four numbers and a club timetable

The two things that make MYP support work are unglamorous. Get the criterion scores for your child's last two summatives, and tell us which afternoons are already taken. With those, we can say whether the weakness repeats across subjects, which criterion to target first, and whether we have a tutor who has actually read the descriptors free in the window your family can keep. A free trial lesson in that slot tests both. If the honest answer is a three-session criteria clinic rather than a year of weekly support, that is what we will recommend.
