IB IGCSE Tutor for Swiss International Scientific School Students in Dubai

Families looking for an IB IGCSE tutor for Swiss International Scientific School students in Dubai usually have a bilingual question wrapped inside a cost question. Two languages A, a subject taught in French or German, and a tutoring market that prices language work differently from mathematics. This page sets out both, with every AED figure sourced. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, never at your address.

  • Bilingual Diploma routes set out, with the requirement explained
  • Language tutoring priced separately from subject tutoring, with sources
  • Boarding and weekly-commute logistics planned rather than improvised
  • Free trial lesson before a price is agreed or anything is paid

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Bilingual study changes the tutoring question and the price of it

Swiss International Scientific School Dubai sits at Al Jaddaf and runs the International Baccalaureate as a continuum with bilingual streams, which produces a tutoring problem no monolingual school generates. A student may be studying a science in a second language, taking two languages at A level of the programme rather than one, or carrying a language acquisition course that is well below or well above where their actual fluency sits. None of those is a difficulty with the subject. They are structural, they are diagnosable, and the market prices them very differently from mathematics.

That is the first thing worth saying about cost. Subject tutoring in Dubai has deep supply and therefore competitive pricing: published rates read in October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour. Language work inside a bilingual programme has thinner supply, because the pool is not people who speak French or German but people who have taught a Diploma language A course or a Diploma science in that language. That narrows the field sharply, and scarcity shows up as a longer wait more often than as a surcharge.

The second thing is that the bilingual route has a real academic prize attached and families often do not know what it requires. A Bilingual Diploma can be awarded on more than one basis, and the routes involve either two languages studied at A level of the programme, or a group three or group four subject completed in a language other than the student's language A. The exact current requirements should be confirmed with the school's coordinator, because they are specific and they decide whether a subject choice made in Year 11 produces the award or not.

IB Gram supports SISD families with one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time. It does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service that exists only in India, and that statement appears on every country page this site publishes. Dubai's in-home market publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour. For a boarding student or a weekly commuter the comparison barely applies, which is one of the reasons this page treats boarding as its own section rather than a footnote.

Two absences, both deliberate. No statement about the UAE VAT treatment of tuition fees, because making one responsibly requires a Federal Tax Authority citation and there is none here; ask any provider in writing whether a figure is inclusive. And no IB session or results date, because none could be verified from the International Baccalaureate's own site for this project. Diploma candidates in the UAE sit the May session; take every date from the school rather than from any tutoring page, this one included.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A continuum school with bilingual streams produces four distinct tutoring situations. The price and the availability differ across all four, which is why naming the situation precisely matters before anything is booked.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-school to Year 6

Primary Years Programme, bilingual

Transdisciplinary inquiry with no external examinations, ending in the Exhibition. In a bilingual stream a child is building literacy in two languages simultaneously, which is a strength over time and produces temporary asymmetries that look like weakness in one of them.

Tutoring here is the cheapest in the whole arc and the most often skipped. The useful work is literacy in the weaker language and the ability to explain an answer in writing, because inquiry-based assessment rewards justification in prose. A gap left here reappears in the Middle Years criteria on communication and later in a Diploma language A course.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme, bilingual

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked out of eight and converted to a 1-7 grade, with a Personal Project in the final year marked out of 24. Language acquisition is assessed by phase rather than by year group, across listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Phase placement is the single most common fixable problem in a bilingual Middle Years programme. A student placed below their fluency coasts and learns little; one placed above it loses marks that have nothing to do with ability. Ask the school which phase your child is in and why, before concluding that anything needs tutoring at all.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme, with the bilingual option

Six subjects, three Higher and three Standard, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, scored out of 45 with 24 as the diploma minimum. A Bilingual Diploma is available on specific bases involving either two languages at A level of the programme or a subject completed in another language.

The decision that produces or forecloses the bilingual award is made on the subject form at the end of Year 11, and families frequently sign it without knowing the requirement. Ask the coordinator to confirm the current basis in writing before the form goes back, because reversing a subject choice after the first term is disruptive and sometimes not possible.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE, for students crossing in or out

Terminal written papers with tiering, and a board-dependent practical arrangement in the sciences. Nothing in it resembles criterion-based marking or phase-based language assessment, so a crossing in either direction is a genuine adjustment rather than a change of timetable.

Dubai's sector is large enough that families move between systems regularly: 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen curricula in 2024-25. A bilingual continuum student moving into IGCSE needs timed paper technique urgently and may also need to choose between a first-language and a foreign-language entry in their second language, which are separate qualifications.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below, the subjects a bilingual household most often asks about, each with the structural note that determines what tutoring should do and how easily it can be staffed.

Language A: Literature

HL and SL, in English, French or German

Studied as a first language, assessed through written papers and an oral component. A student taking two language A courses carries two sets of set texts and two oral components, which is a workload fact that families underestimate when the bilingual award is the goal.

Language A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Standard Level runs Paper 1 at thirty-five per cent, Paper 2 at thirty-five and the Individual Oral at thirty; Higher Level adds the HL Essay at twenty. The dominant Paper 1 loss is identifying a technique rather than analysing its effect, which is a sentence-level fix.

Language acquisition: French B, German B, Arabic B

HL, SL and ab initio

Assessed across receptive, productive and interactive skills. Placement is the first thing to check: ab initio, B at Standard and B at Higher are different courses, and being in the wrong one is a common and fixable cause of apparent underperformance.

Sciences taught in a second language

HL and SL

The content is the standard Diploma science — Paper 1 at thirty-six per cent, Paper 2 at forty-four, the investigation at twenty with a 3,000-word cap. The difficulty is usually vocabulary and command terms in the second language rather than the science, and that distinction changes the tutor you need.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Standard Level two papers at forty per cent each plus the Exploration at twenty; Higher Level three papers at thirty, thirty and twenty plus the Exploration at twenty. Paper 3 at Higher Level is the least practised component in the Diploma.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Same weighting structure, with modelling and statistics in place of the heavier pure content. Modelling answers require a written interpretation in context, which is harder in a second language and is where bilingual students lose avoidable marks.

Chemistry and Physics

HL and SL

Energetics, organic mechanisms and sign conventions carry the Higher Level losses. Where these are taught in a second language the first diagnostic should separate vocabulary failures from conceptual ones, because the two have completely different remedies.

Biology

HL and SL

The heaviest content load in the group, so most of the gain comes from systematic retrieval rather than explanation. Command-term compliance is the largest single avoidable loss, and it is harder for a student working in their second language.

Economics and Business Management

HL and SL

Economics portfolios are three commentaries of no more than 800 words each on real published articles; Business Management adds a pre-released case at Higher Level. Both reward precise technical vocabulary, which makes them demanding second-language subjects.

MYP Language Acquisition by phase

Phases 1-6

Assessed in four skills, each out of eight, with phase rather than year group setting expectations. A student can look broadly competent while one skill carrying a quarter of the grade sits well below the others, and speaking is usually that skill.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, all delivered online and one-to-one. In a bilingual household the choice turns on whether the problem is the subject, the language, or the interaction between them.

Subject tutoring in the language of instruction

Standard weekly support in a Diploma or Middle Years subject, delivered in whichever language the subject is taught in. The pool for this is narrower than for a monolingual request, so booking earlier matters and a realistic match timeframe should be stated before payment rather than after.

  • Matched on subject, level and language of instruction
  • A fixed weekday and hour on Gulf Standard Time
  • Work set between sessions and marked in the same language

Language A or language acquisition support

Separate from subject tutoring, because the assessment is different. A language A course has set texts and an oral component; a language acquisition course divides across receptive, productive and interactive skills. The first session should establish whether the problem is fluency, technique or placement.

  • Placement checked before anything else is assumed
  • Oral components rehearsed against the published criteria
  • Set texts and the oral treated as distinct pieces of work

A vocabulary-and-command-terms block

Four to six sessions for a student whose science or mathematics marks are being lost to the second language rather than the content: technical vocabulary, command terms in that language, and how to write a method so the examiner can follow it. Narrow, cheap and frequently the whole problem.

  • Diagnostic first, to separate vocabulary from concept failures
  • Command terms learned in the language of assessment
  • Priced and scoped as a block with a visible finish

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a Bilingual Diploma actually requires, and when the decision is made

The Bilingual Diploma is a real distinction and families at bilingual schools frequently pursue it without knowing the requirement, which means the decision gets made by accident on a subject form. The award can be obtained on more than one basis. One route involves completing two languages studied at A level of the programme. Another involves completing a group three or group four subject — an individuals and societies subject, or a science — in a language other than the student's nominated language A. There is also a route through the Extended Essay in a second language A.

Those are not interchangeable in workload. Two languages A means two sets of set texts, two written paper sets and two oral components, carried alongside four other subjects and the core. Completing a science in a second language means one extra layer of difficulty on an existing subject rather than an extra subject. For some students the first is natural and the second would be punishing; for others it is the reverse. Nothing about this is obvious from the outside, which is why it should be discussed before the form rather than after.

The practical instruction is narrow and important: ask the coordinator to confirm the current basis for the award in writing, and to say which of your child's provisional subject choices would satisfy it. Requirements are specific and they are periodically revised, so a figure or a rule read on a third-party page — including this one — is not a safe planning basis. The school holds the version that governs the cohort.

Where tutoring fits is in making the chosen route survivable. If the route is two languages A, the workload needs managing and the oral components need rehearsing, because they are rehearsable and students rarely do it. If the route is a subject in a second language, the early work is technical vocabulary and command terms in that language, which is a four to six session job rather than a two-year commitment. Both are cheap compared with abandoning the route in Year 13.

02

Why language work is priced and staffed differently from subject work

Dubai's subject tutoring market is deep, and depth means competitive pricing. The emirate had 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen curricula in 2024-25, and a sector that size employs many subject teachers. A qualified online subject tutor sits at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour on published rates read in October 2026, with named IB specialists at roughly AED 200 to 450 or more and a single provider publishing AED 650.

Language work inside a Diploma programme is a different market, and the reason is not prestige. The relevant pool is not people who speak French or German. It is people who have taught a Diploma language A course, or a Diploma science in that language, and who know the assessment: the oral components, the set-text requirements, the criteria. That is a much smaller group than the set of fluent speakers, and it is smaller again for German than for French in this region. Scarcity in a deep market usually shows up as a waiting period rather than a premium, which is a better outcome for a family and a worse one for a deadline.

The implication is that language requests should be made earlier and specified more precisely than subject requests. Say which language, which course and level, and whether the need is the language itself or a subject taught in it. Those three facts determine whether a match exists at all. A vague request for a French tutor produces a fluent speaker; a precise request for somebody who has taught French A: Language and Literature at Standard Level produces either the right person or an honest no.

There is also a cheaper possibility that gets missed. A substantial share of what looks like a language problem in a bilingual science or mathematics class is technical vocabulary and command terms, not fluency. That is a four to six session block with a subject specialist who works in the language, rather than a two-year engagement with a language teacher. The first diagnostic should distinguish the two, and asking for that distinction explicitly is worth doing before any package is bought.

03

Separating a language problem from a subject problem

  • Same question in both languages: the fastest diagnostic available
  • Correct in the stronger language only means the science is intact
  • Wrong command in a correct answer means command-term recognition
  • Two of the three cases are a short block, not a term of teaching

This is the diagnostic that matters most in a bilingual household and it is rarely done. A student losing marks in a science taught in their second language has one of three problems, and they need completely different responses. Either they do not understand the science. Or they understand it and lack the technical vocabulary to express it in the language of assessment. Or they understand it, have the vocabulary, and are misreading command terms in that language, which is a specific and narrow failure.

Distinguishing them takes one session and a marked script. Give the student the same question in both languages. If the answer is correct in the stronger language and wrong in the weaker one, the science is intact and the problem is linguistic. If it is wrong in both, the science is the problem and language is a secondary issue. If the answer is correct in substance but addresses the wrong command — describing where the paper asked for an explanation — then the fault is command-term recognition in that language, which is the cheapest of the three to fix.

That third case is more common than families expect, because command terms are a small closed vocabulary that carries disproportionate weight. Explain, evaluate, analyse, discuss, justify, compare and outline each specify what an answer must do, and the mark scheme is built around that specification. A student who knows the science and misreads the command writes something true and scores a fraction. In a second language that misreading is more likely and equally fixable: an hour sorting past questions by command term in the language of assessment moves marks quickly.

The reason to insist on this diagnostic before buying a package is financial as well as pedagogical. The linguistic and command-term cases are four to six session blocks. The conceptual case is a term of weekly subject teaching. Buying the second when you needed the first is one of the more expensive mistakes available in a bilingual programme, and nobody will stop you making it.

04

Boarding and weekly commuting: what changes and what does not

A boarding student is in a different logistical position from a day student, and in some respects a better one. The hours are structured: boarding houses have study periods, and a fixed online session inside one of them is usually straightforward to arrange with house staff, though it needs asking rather than assuming. Once arranged, that slot is more reliable than any day student's, because nothing depends on an afternoon commute across Dubai.

What boarding changes is the parent's visibility. A day student's parent hears about a bad week; a boarding parent often does not until a report. That makes the written evidence trail more important rather than less: a risk list from the first diagnostic, updated monthly, with each item marked closed, improving or unchanged and the marked work attached. Ask for it monthly and read it, because it replaces the informal signal that a day family gets for free.

Weekly commuting, for families based outside Dubai or travelling between the UAE and elsewhere, changes which days are usable rather than removing them. A student travelling at the start and end of the week has three reliable evenings rather than five, and the slot should sit in the middle of that window rather than at either edge. Travel abroad is handled as a one-off time adjustment rather than a cancelled term, which is the practical advantage of an online arrangement over a travelling tutor.

What does not change in either case is the internal deadline calendar. Internal assessment and core deadlines are set by the school, arrive in clusters, and land hardest in the autumn of the final Diploma year alongside mocks. They do not pause for a travel week or a boarding routine. Ask the coordinator for the whole calendar at the start of the first Diploma year, and agree in advance what sessions will contain during a cluster: process coaching on the piece that is due rather than subject teaching that competes with it.

05

Where a continuum student's language weakness hides

In a bilingual continuum there is no terminal examination until the final two years, which means a language asymmetry can persist for a long time without producing a visible result. It still produces marks, though, and they are visible in the Middle Years criterion breakdown if anybody looks. That document is the early-warning system, and most families never ask for it.

In language acquisition the assessment divides across listening, reading, speaking and writing, each marked out of eight, with phase rather than year group setting expectations. A student can look broadly competent while one skill carrying a quarter of the grade sits well below the others. Speaking is usually that skill, because it is least practised in a classroom and most uncomfortable to practise alone. It is also the most improvable in a short run of focused sessions, which makes it a good first target.

In subject groups taught in a second language the hiding place is criterion communicating, where it exists, or the equivalent descriptor about using appropriate terminology. A student who understands the material and cannot express it in the language of instruction scores well on knowing and understanding and poorly on communicating, which averages to an unremarkable grade and conceals a specific, fixable problem. The remedy is terminology and written structure, not more content.

The first thing to check before any of this, however, is placement. Being in the wrong phase or the wrong course — ab initio rather than B, or B at Standard rather than Higher — is a common and entirely fixable cause of apparent underperformance, and it costs nothing to establish. Ask the school which phase or course your child is in and on what basis, and ask whether a change is possible. That question has resolved more apparent language problems than any amount of tutoring.

06

Market bands, and the five questions that settle a price

  • Does the figure include VAT, in writing
  • Per hour or per session, and the session length
  • What happens if we stop after one month
  • Who marks work between sessions, in which language, and is that time included
  • What happens if the matched tutor becomes unavailable

For completeness, the published bands read in October 2026. Budget online platforms and university-student tutors between roughly AED 45 and 150 an hour, some entry rates quoted from AED 33. A qualified subject tutor online at roughly AED 150 to 300, with one agency publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. A named IB, IGCSE or A Level specialist at roughly AED 200 to 450 or more, with one agency publishing AED 270. In-home one-to-one visits including travel at roughly AED 180 to 500. One provider publishes AED 650 at the premium end. Monthly packages advertised include around AED 799 for eight online sessions and roughly AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Those belong to the providers that published them. Three of the six pages competing for searches like this one publish no price at all and the two that do quote in US dollars, which no Dubai family budgets in. They are reproduced here so that a parent has a reference range, not as an endorsement of anybody. IB Gram's own figure follows the free trial lesson and depends on subject, level, language and frequency, which is why a single number would mislead.

Five questions settle almost any price conversation and should be answered in writing. Does the figure include VAT. Is the rate per hour or per session, and how long is a session. What happens if we stop after one month. Who marks work between sessions, in which language, and is that time inside the rate. And what happens if the matched tutor becomes unavailable, including whether the written risk list hands over.

For a bilingual household add a sixth: in which language will work be marked and feedback given. A tutor marking a French A essay in English is giving feedback the student then has to translate, which loses most of its value. It sounds like a small point and it is the difference between useful marking and decorative marking.

07

What this page will not claim

No statement about the UAE VAT treatment of tuition fees, because making one responsibly requires a Federal Tax Authority citation and there is none here. No fine amount for unpermitted tutoring, because the ministry published no schedule and the figure circulating online could not be verified. No IB points threshold for Ministry of Education equivalency, because no official source for one could be read; the British-track figures are published and the IB one is not. No IB examination or results date, because the organisation's own site could not be checked. No star rating, satisfaction percentage or student count, because none could be produced with a sample size, a date and a method.

On permits, the relevant fact is that the cost is zero. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's own service with a stated two working days to complete. Eligible applicants include school-registered teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

On assessed work the line is authorship and it is not negotiable. A tutor may teach content, explain each criterion in the board's published wording, show how a comparable piece is built, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses, and teach them to fix it themselves. A tutor may not write the internal assessment, draft the Extended Essay, or edit a piece to completion so the words become theirs. The caps are 4,000 words on the Extended Essay, 1,600 on the Theory of Knowledge essay, 950 on the exhibition commentary, 3,000 on the sciences investigation and 800 per Economics commentary.

And position. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International, Pearson, the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Department of Education and Knowledge, the Sharjah Private Education Authority or the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It holds no such relationship, claims none, operates no premises in the UAE, and has no arrangement with any school named on this page.

08

Getting started in a bilingual household

Three pieces of information, all free, make a sensible start possible. The phase or course your child is placed in for each language, and on what basis. The criterion breakdown behind the most recent reported grade in the subject that worries you, not the grade itself. And for a Diploma student, the coordinator's internal deadline calendar plus written confirmation of the current basis for a Bilingual Diploma if that award is the goal.

Then specify the request precisely, because in language work precision is what determines whether a match exists. Which language, which course and level, and whether the need is the language itself or a subject taught in it. A vague request produces a fluent speaker; a precise one produces either the right specialist or an honest statement that nobody is available in the slot you want, which is more useful than a substitution.

Then run the diagnostic that separates the three cases: conceptual, vocabulary, or command-term recognition. Same question in both languages, plus a marked script. Two of the three are a four to six session block rather than a term of weekly teaching, and buying the wrong one is the main way money disappears in a bilingual programme.

The limit, stated once more. No tutor is sent to an Al Jaddaf address or anywhere else in the UAE; lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For a boarding student that is the only practical arrangement anyway, and for a day student in a city with heavy afternoon traffic it means the slot is a start time rather than an arrival window. The reason to choose it here is narrower than convenience: a bilingual Diploma request needs somebody who has taught that course in that language, and that pool is defined by competence rather than by distance.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Communities SISD families live in, noted for the thing that affects tutoring logistics: how long the afternoon takes and whether a boarding or weekly pattern applies.

Al Jaddaf and Dubai Healthcare City

Immediately around the school, with the shortest journey of anywhere on this list. Day students here can realistically start a session at 16:30, which gives the widest usable evening in the catchment.

Dubai Festival City and Ras Al Khor

Across the creek with a short but peak-sensitive run. Teaching sessions from 17:00 are workable, and anything written or timed is better placed on a weekend morning.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Apartment living with a reliable but busy commute. The constraint is a quiet space rather than travel time, which argues for a session before the household's busiest hour rather than after it.

Deira and Bur Dubai

Older districts on the creek side with short distances and heavy congestion. Journey times vary enough day to day that a fixed online slot holds where an arrival time does not.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Established family communities on the eastern side with a longer run. Two school runs are common, which pushes the household's earliest usable hour past 17:00.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Villa communities reached on the Al Khail and Ras Al Khor roads, with a moderate but variable afternoon. Reliability matters more than speed, which suits a protected weekly slot.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

A longer cross-city commute at peak, realistically placing a weekday session at 18:00 or later. Shorter recall-based sessions midweek fit the constraint better than full-length ones.

Boarding on campus

A different logistical situation entirely. Sessions sit inside study periods, which needs arranging with house staff rather than assuming, and the slot is then more reliable than any day student's.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Jaddaf, Healthcare City and the creek side

  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Universal American School
  • Deira International School
  • Dubai Scholars Private School

Mirdif, Nad Al Sheba and the eastern communities

The next ring of commuting on the Ras Al Khor and Al Khail corridors. Dubai private schools are licensed by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Check placement before assuming anything needs tutoring

Which phase or course your child sits in for each language, and on what basis. Ab initio, B at Standard and B at Higher are different courses, and a Middle Years phase is set by capability rather than year group. Wrong placement is common, free to establish and often the whole problem.

  2. 02

Confirm the Bilingual Diploma basis in writing

Ask the coordinator which of your child's provisional subject choices would satisfy the current requirement, before the Year 11 subject form goes back. Requirements are specific and periodically revised, so the school holds the version that governs the cohort rather than any third-party page.

  3. 03

    Specify the language request precisely

Which language, which course, which level, and whether the need is the language itself or a subject taught in it. A vague request produces a fluent speaker. A precise one produces the right specialist or an honest no, and in a narrow pool an honest no is more useful than a substitution.

  4. 04

    Run the three-way diagnostic first

The same question in both languages plus a marked script, to separate a conceptual gap from a vocabulary gap from a command-term misreading. Two of those three are a four to six session block rather than a term of teaching, and buying the wrong one is the expensive mistake here.

  5. 05

Ask in which language work will be marked

A French A essay marked in English gives feedback the student has to translate, which loses most of its value. It sounds minor and it is the difference between useful marking and decorative marking. Add it to the five standard price questions before agreeing anything.

For boarders, insist on the monthly written trail

A boarding parent does not get the informal weekly signal a day parent gets for free, so the risk list from the diagnostic, updated monthly with each item marked closed, improving or unchanged and the marked work attached, is the replacement. Ask for it and read it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Bilingual problems treated as structural, not as weakness

Wrong phase placement, a subject taught in a second language, two language A courses carried at once. None of those is a difficulty with the subject, all are diagnosable, and the first one is free to check and frequently the entire explanation.

The Bilingual Diploma decision flagged before the form

The routes differ enormously in workload: two languages A is the heaviest, a science in a second language is one extra layer. The decision is made on the Year 11 subject form and reversing it later is disruptive, so it deserves a session rather than an assumption.

Language supply described honestly

The pool is people who have taught the course in that language, not fluent speakers, and it is narrower again for German than for French in this region. In a deep market scarcity shows up as a waiting period, which is why language requests need making earlier and specifying better.

The three-way diagnostic before any package

Conceptual, vocabulary, or command-term recognition. Two of the three are short blocks and one is a term of teaching, so the diagnostic determines whether you are spending four sessions or forty. Nobody will stop you buying the wrong one.

Boarding handled as its own logistical case

A session inside a study period is more reliable than any day student's slot once house staff have agreed it, but the parent loses the informal weekly signal. The written monthly trail replaces it, and asking for it matters more for a boarder than for anybody else.

Sourced figures only, and the absences stated

No VAT assertion, no fine amount, no IB equivalency threshold, no IB examination date, no star rating. Each is absent because it could not be sourced, and on a page that quotes money the absences are the most informative part.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does a Bilingual Diploma require at a school like SISD?+

The award can be obtained on more than one basis: completing two languages studied at A level of the programme, completing a group three or group four subject in a language other than the nominated language A, or in some cases through an Extended Essay in a second language A. The routes differ enormously in workload. Ask the coordinator to confirm the current basis in writing and to say which of your child's provisional subject choices would satisfy it, before the Year 11 form goes back.

Is it harder to find a tutor for a Diploma subject taught in French or German?+

Yes, and not because of prestige. The relevant pool is not fluent speakers but people who have taught that Diploma course in that language and know its assessment, which is a much smaller group, and smaller again for German than for French in this region. In a market as deep as Dubai's, that scarcity usually appears as a waiting period rather than a premium. Specify the language, course and level precisely, and expect either the right person or an honest no.

Does a tutor come to homes in Al Jaddaf?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service that exists only in India. Lessons are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Dubai's in-home market publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. For a boarding student the comparison barely applies, and for a day student the online slot is a start time rather than an arrival window.

How do I tell whether my child's problem is the science or the language?+

Give them the same question in both languages and look at a marked script. Correct in the stronger language and wrong in the weaker one means the science is intact and the problem is linguistic. Wrong in both means the science is the issue. Correct in substance but answering the wrong command — describing where the paper asked for an explanation — means command-term recognition in that language, which is the cheapest of the three to fix.

What is the cheapest fix for a bilingual student losing marks in a science?+

Usually a four to six session block on technical vocabulary and command terms in the language of assessment, delivered by a subject specialist who works in that language. Command terms are a small closed vocabulary carrying disproportionate weight: explain, evaluate, analyse, discuss, justify, compare and outline each specify what an answer must do, and the mark scheme is built around that. Sorting past questions by command term in that language moves marks quickly and cheaply.

Why should I check my child's language phase first?+

Because wrong placement is common, free to establish and frequently the entire explanation for apparent underperformance. Middle Years language acquisition is assessed by phase rather than by year group, and in the Diploma ab initio, B at Standard and B at Higher are different courses. A student placed below their fluency coasts and learns little; one placed above it loses marks that have nothing to do with ability. Ask the school which placement applies and on what basis.

Which language skill is usually weakest in a bilingual programme?+

Speaking, in most cases. Language acquisition divides across listening, reading, speaking and writing, each marked out of eight, so a student can look broadly competent while one skill carrying a quarter of the grade sits well below the others. Speaking is least practised in a classroom and most uncomfortable to practise alone, which is exactly why it is also the most improvable in a short run of focused sessions against the published criteria.

How does tutoring work for a boarding student at SISD?+

Sessions sit inside study periods, which needs arranging with house staff rather than assuming, and once agreed the slot is more reliable than any day student's because nothing depends on an afternoon commute. What changes is the parent's visibility: a boarding parent does not get the informal weekly signal. The replacement is the written trail — a risk list from the first diagnostic, updated monthly with each item marked closed, improving or unchanged, and the marked work attached.

In which language should work between sessions be marked?+

The language of assessment, and it is worth making explicit before agreeing anything. A French A essay marked in English gives feedback the student then has to translate, which loses most of its value, and the same applies to a science taught in German. It sounds like a small administrative point and it is the difference between marking that changes a script and marking that decorates it. Add the question to the standard five about price.

Is carrying two languages A as well as four other subjects realistic?+

For some students yes, and for others it is punishing, and the difference is not simply ability. Two languages A means two sets of set texts, two written paper sets and two oral components alongside four other subjects, the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. A student who manages deadlines well may find it stimulating; one who does not will find the combination unmanageable in the final year. It is worth one session of honest comparison before the subject form.

What does subject tutoring cost for a Dubai bilingual household?+

Published market rates read in October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, named IB specialists at roughly AED 200 to 450 or more, in-home visits at roughly AED 180 to 500, and budget platforms between AED 45 and 150, with one provider publishing AED 650. Those belong to the providers that published them. Language work inside a Diploma sits in the specialist band, where availability rather than price is usually the constraint.

Do internal deadlines change for a travelling or boarding family?+

No, and that is the point worth planning around. Internal assessment and core deadlines are set by the school, arrive in clusters, and land hardest in the autumn of the final Diploma year alongside mock examinations. They do not pause for a travel week or a boarding routine. Ask the coordinator for the whole internal calendar at the start of the first Diploma year, and agree in advance that sessions during a cluster will coach the piece that is due rather than teach competing content.

Can a bilingual student's Extended Essay be written in their second language?+

In some circumstances it can, and it is one of the routes associated with bilingual recognition, but the current requirement should be confirmed with the coordinator rather than assumed from any third-party page. What tutoring can legitimately do either way is narrow: explain the criteria in the board's published wording, help turn a broad question into one the available sources support, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses. The 4,000-word cap applies regardless of language.

What should I ask for after a month of bilingual support?+

Which of the three problems was being worked on — concept, vocabulary or command-term recognition — what the baseline was, and two marked pieces from different weeks in the language of assessment so the change is visible in the text. If the target was a command-term misreading or vocabulary, something should have moved inside two to three weeks. A conceptual gap moves at roughly two to four weeks per topic, so expect less and ask which topics closed.

Check the placement, confirm the route, then run the diagnostic

For a bilingual household the order saves money. Establish which phase or course your child sits in for each language and on what basis, because wrong placement is common and free to check. If the Bilingual Diploma is the goal, get the current basis confirmed in writing before the Year 11 subject form goes back. Then run the three-way diagnostic that separates a conceptual gap from a vocabulary gap from a command-term misreading, because two of those three are a short block rather than a term. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; nobody is sent to an Al Jaddaf address.
