IB IGCSE Tutor for Dubai American Academy Students in Dubai

A family searching for an IB IGCSE tutor for Dubai American Academy students in Dubai is usually holding two assessment systems at once: a high-school transcript with a grade point average, and an IB Diploma scored out of 45. They measure different things and reward different behaviour. This page sets both out, with the equivalency rules the American track actually has to satisfy. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

A transcript and a 45-point score are not the same measurement

Dubai American Academy runs an American high-school programme with the International Baccalaureate Diploma available alongside it, which means many households here are tracking two assessment systems in parallel. One produces a transcript: course grades accumulated semester by semester, weighted into a grade point average, with Advanced Placement examinations sitting on top as separate single-subject results scored from one to five. The other produces a single number out of 45, built from six subject grades of one to seven plus up to three bonus points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge matrix.

Those two machines reward different behaviour, and that is the practical point rather than a philosophical one. A grade point average rewards consistency across every semester: a weak month in a single course leaves a permanent mark on the transcript, because grades accumulate rather than being superseded. The IB Diploma rewards performance at the end: a weak term in Year 12 is largely invisible if the final papers and internal assessments go well. A student who is strong but erratic does better in the second system; one who is steady but peaks poorly under examination pressure does better in the first.

That difference should shape where tutoring goes. On the American track the highest-value intervention is often early and preventive, because a semester grade once recorded cannot be improved, only averaged down by the next one. On the IB track the highest-value intervention is usually a component with a published weighting, because the final score is assembled from identifiable pieces and the untimed criteria-marked ones move fastest. Families routinely apply the logic of one system to the other and wonder why the hours produced less than expected.

IB Gram supports Dubai American Academy families with one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time. It does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service that exists only in India, and that statement appears on every country page this site publishes. Dubai's in-home market publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, read in October 2026. For a course-specific problem, the question that matters is whether the tutor has taught that course, which is narrower than who will drive to Al Barsha.

Two cautions. No IB session or results date appears here, because none could be verified from the International Baccalaureate's own site for this project; Diploma candidates in the UAE sit the May session and dates should come from the school. And the equivalency figures below are quoted only where a published source exists: the American-track and British-track numbers are sourced, and no IB points threshold is published anywhere this project could verify, so none appears.

At a glance

  • A grade point average accumulates; an IB score is assembled at the end

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four tracks a household at this school might be managing. Each is assessed differently enough that a tutor matched to the wrong one will teach the right content in the wrong shape.

HSAges 14-18 · Grades 9-12

American high-school diploma courses

Credit-bearing courses graded per semester and accumulated into a transcript with a weighted grade point average. Assessment is continuous: tests, projects, participation and finals, with the balance set by the course rather than by an external board.

Because grades accumulate, the cheapest and most effective tutoring on this track is early and preventive within a semester, not remedial after it. A grade once recorded stays on the transcript, so the useful question in week four of a semester is not whether the student is struggling but whether anything is drifting.

APAges 15-18 · Grades 10-12

Advanced Placement examinations

Single-subject external examinations scored from one to five, sat in May, independent of the transcript grade for the same course. A student can hold a strong course grade and a weak examination score, or the reverse, because the two measure different things.

That independence is the planning fact families miss. Preparation for the examination is a separate activity from doing well in the class, and it is largely a question of past-paper technique and the specific rubric of the free-response sections. A short targeted block before May is usually better value than a year of general support.

DPAges 16-19 · Grades 11-12

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three Higher and three Standard, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, scored out of 45 with 24 as the diploma minimum. Internal assessment carries real weight in every subject, typically twenty to thirty per cent.

A student arriving from an American middle school has usually never been marked against published criteria or written an independent research piece to a word cap. Those are the gaps, not content. The first term of support should therefore be weighted towards criteria and research process rather than towards subject coverage.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE, for students crossing from a British school

Terminal written papers with tiering into Core and Extended on Cambridge or Foundation and Higher on Pearson Edexcel, and a board-dependent practical arrangement in the sciences. A different system again from both the transcript and the Diploma.

Dubai had 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen curricula in 2024-25, with the UK curriculum at thirty-seven per cent of enrolment and American at fourteen, so crossings between the two are common. A student moving from IGCSE into an American high school meets continuous assessment for the first time and often underestimates how much a weak early semester costs.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below, the courses this catchment most often asks about, each with the note that explains where the marks actually go in that system.

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Standard Level two papers at forty per cent each plus the Exploration at twenty; Higher Level three papers at thirty, thirty and twenty plus the Exploration at twenty. Paper 3 at Higher Level is an extended-response problem paper and the least practised component in the Diploma.

IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Same weighting structure with modelling and statistics replacing the heavier pure content. Students from an American background often find this the more natural transition, because statistical reasoning features earlier in a US middle-school sequence.

IB Physics and Chemistry

HL and SL

Paper 1 at thirty-six per cent including a data-analysis section, Paper 2 at forty-four, and the investigation at twenty with a 3,000-word cap marked across four criteria at six marks each. The independent investigation is usually the genuinely new demand.

IB Biology

HL and SL

The heaviest content load in the group. The largest single avoidable loss is answering describe where the question asked explain, which is a notation habit rather than a knowledge gap and is countable on a marked script.

IB Economics and Business Management

HL and SL

Economics portfolios are three commentaries of no more than 800 words each on real published articles; Business Management adds a pre-released case at Higher Level that can be worked months ahead. Diagram accuracy decides more Economics marks than the prose around it.

IB English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Standard Level Paper 1 at thirty-five per cent, Paper 2 at thirty-five, Individual Oral at thirty; Higher Level adds the HL Essay at twenty. Paper 1 losses come from naming a technique rather than analysing its effect on a reader.

AP Calculus AB and BC

Advanced Placement

Multiple-choice and free-response sections, scored one to five, independent of the course grade. The free-response rubric awards marks for stated reasoning and correct notation, so a student who writes only answers loses points they had effectively earned.

AP sciences and AP Statistics

Advanced Placement

Free-response sections reward experimental reasoning and justified conclusions rather than recall alone, which is where class-strong students lose points. Past-paper work against the published rubric is the dependable preparation and is distinct from classroom study.

High-school mathematics and sciences

Grades 9-12

Graded continuously across a semester, so the marks that matter accumulate from week three onwards. Preventive support inside a semester is worth more here than remedial support after it, because a recorded grade cannot be improved, only averaged.

SAT preparation, Math and Reading and Writing

Grades 10-12

A separate skill from coursework: pacing, question-type recognition and strategic omission. Relevant to equivalency as well as admissions, since the American track cites SAT Math 450 and an English route through SAT reading and writing 450 among its options.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, all online and one-to-one, chosen by which measurement system is in play rather than by the subject's name.

Preventive support inside a semester

For transcript courses, where grades accumulate and a recorded semester cannot be improved. One session a week from the start of the semester rather than after the first disappointing report, because the whole value here is keeping a grade from being set rather than recovering from one that has been.

  • Starts in week one or two of a semester, not week eight
  • A fixed weekday and hour on Gulf Standard Time
  • Work set between sessions and marked before the next one

An examination block before May

For Advanced Placement, where the score is independent of the course grade and the preparation is a different activity from classroom study. Six to eight sessions on past papers against the published rubric, with the free-response sections treated as the priority because that is where class-strong students lose points.

  • Opens with a full timed paper to establish a baseline
  • Free-response rubric worked through explicitly
  • Scoped and priced as a block with a visible finish

Component-targeted IB support

For Diploma subjects, aimed at a named component with a published weighting rather than at the subject in general. The untimed criteria-marked components move fastest, because the criteria state what is wanted and there is no clock adding a second variable.

  • A named component chosen from the published weightings
  • Criteria and word caps named before drafting begins
  • Feedback on the student's own text, never a rewrite

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Advanced Placement and the IB Diploma, compared assessment by assessment

The comparison usually happens on reputation and should happen on structure. Advanced Placement is a set of independent single-subject examinations, sat in May and scored from one to five, with no compulsory core and no requirement to take a particular combination. A student takes as many as they wish, in whatever mix suits them, and each result stands alone. The IB Diploma is a package: six subjects across six groups, three Higher and three Standard, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, assembled into one score out of 45 with 24 as the minimum for the award.

That structural difference produces three practical consequences. First, flexibility. A student with one very strong area and several weak ones can take three Advanced Placement examinations in that area and nothing else; the Diploma requires breadth by design. Second, the core. Advanced Placement has no equivalent of an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge course or a CAS requirement, which means it generates far fewer internally set deadlines and demands much less project management. Third, internal assessment: Diploma subjects carry it, typically at twenty to thirty per cent, so a portion of every grade is produced away from the examination hall.

For tutoring this means the work differs rather than the difficulty. Advanced Placement preparation is almost entirely external-examination technique: past papers, the free-response rubric, pacing, and the recognition that a strong course grade does not predict a strong score because the two measure different things. Diploma support is split across timed papers and criteria-marked internal assessment, and the second usually offers faster returns because the criteria are published and there is no clock.

Neither route is harder. A student who misses deadlines will find the Diploma core punishing in a way that no amount of subject tutoring repairs, and that is the strongest single signal against it. A student who needs breadth imposed on them, or who wants the single score and the core on a university application, has a strong argument for it. The table sets the structures side by side so the choice can be made on something checkable.

02

Grade point average and 45 points: two different machines

A grade point average is cumulative. Semester grades are recorded, weighted and averaged, and once a semester closes its grade is permanent: it can be diluted by later semesters but never replaced. That gives the transcript a particular property that families underestimate. The cost of a bad month in Grade 10 is not that term's report; it is a small permanent reduction in the number a university eventually reads, and the only remedy is a larger volume of good semesters afterwards.

An IB score is assembled at the end. Six subject grades of one to seven, produced by a mix of timed papers and internal assessment, plus up to three bonus points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge matrix, totalling a maximum of 45 with 24 required for the award. Nothing about a weak term in the first Diploma year appears in that number, provided the final components go well. The system is forgiving of a bad patch and unforgiving of a bad fortnight in May.

The behavioural implication runs in both directions. On the transcript track the discipline that pays is consistency: homework submitted, tests prepared for, nothing drifting for three weeks unnoticed. On the Diploma track the discipline that pays is deadline management on internal assessment plus examination performance at the end. Students are rarely equally good at both, and knowing which one your child is better at is more useful than any comparison of the two systems' prestige.

Where tutoring fits therefore differs. On the transcript, support bought in week two of a semester prevents a grade from being set; support bought in week twelve can only influence the final assessment of a grade that is largely already determined. On the Diploma, support can usefully arrive later, because the components that produce the score are still ahead. Families routinely buy transcript support late and Diploma support early, which is precisely backwards.

Ministry of Education equivalency on the American track

Equivalency is the process by which a school certificate earned on an international curriculum is recognised in the UAE, and it is absent from most of this search result: four of the ten query clusters researched for this market contain no mention of it, and one page that does mention it publishes an incorrect figure. For a family on the American track it matters because the requirements are different in kind from the British ones, and they involve test scores rather than a subject count.

On the American track the sourced position is specific. English proficiency is shown through a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. Mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. That is a testing requirement, and it means a student can hold a perfectly respectable transcript and still have a documentation gap if no qualifying test score exists. The article this was read from names no EmSAT requirement and states no IB points threshold.

By contrast the British track is a subject count: five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education specifically excluded from those five, plus proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. One ranking competitor states six IGCSE subjects. Five is what the published clarification reported.

For the IB there is no figure on this page, deliberately. No official source for an IB points threshold could be verified for this project, and publishing an invented number would be worse than publishing nothing because a family might plan around it. Two things follow. Describe the process, cite the authority, and go to the Ministry of Education's own channel for your own case. And treat any claim that tutoring is required for equivalency as a false-urgency pitch about a regulatory process; it is a documentation matter, not an academic hurdle a tutor clears.

04

Moving from an American middle school into the IB Diploma

  • Published criteria replace a classroom rubric; good work can satisfy neither
  • Research design cannot be repaired after data collection
  • The step to 4,000 words is project management, not writing ability
  • Timed sections from the first term, marked against the official scheme

A student making this move inside one school changes assessment system without changing building, which is exactly why it gets under-planned. The content overlap is usually reasonable; what is missing is specific and consistent. Three things: being marked against published criteria rather than a teacher's rubric, producing an independent research piece to a hard word cap, and sitting long papers in which a full subject's worth of material can appear in any order.

The criteria point is the one that bites first. A Diploma internal assessment is marked against named criteria with published descriptors, and a student used to a classroom rubric often writes something good that satisfies none of them. In the sciences the investigation is capped at 3,000 words and marked out of twenty-four across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each. Research design covers the question and the controlled variables, and it cannot be repaired once the data has been collected, which makes a planning session before any practical work the single highest-value hour available.

The independent research point follows. The Extended Essay is 4,000 words, the Theory of Knowledge essay 1,600 and the exhibition commentary 950. For a student whose longest previous piece was a class paper of a few pages, the step is in project management rather than writing ability: choosing a question the available sources can actually support, keeping a process record, and working to internally set deadlines that arrive in clusters in the autumn of the final year.

The examination point is the slowest to fix and the easiest to start on. Diploma papers are longer than most high-school finals, draw on a whole course rather than a unit, and reward sustained multi-step explanation. Timed sections from the first term, marked against the official scheme with losses attributed to causes rather than topics, closes that gap faster than additional content teaching. For a student coming from a continuous-assessment background it is the most important single piece of preparation.

05

Where standardised-test preparation actually fits

SAT preparation sits oddly in a tutoring plan because it is not a subject. It is a set of techniques: recognising question types quickly, pacing across a timed section, deciding what to skip, and handling an adaptive format where the test responds to performance. Those are learnable and they are separate from coursework ability. A student with strong mathematics grades can lose points to pacing, and a student with modest grades can gain points from technique alone.

It also has a second relevance in the UAE that families outside the region do not have to think about. The sourced equivalency requirements on the American track cite at least 450 in the SAT Math test, and allow 450 in the reading and writing section as one of three routes to the English requirement alongside IELTS 5 and TOEFL iBT 61. That makes a qualifying score a documentation matter as well as an admissions one, and it is worth checking early rather than in the final semester of Grade 12.

On timing, the practical constraint in this catchment is a full-length sitting. Practice has to include complete timed papers, and a three-hour sitting after a Dubai afternoon commute measures fatigue rather than ability. Weekend mornings are the right home for them for almost every community on this page except those immediately around the school. Midweek sessions then handle technique, review and question-type work, which are short-format activities that survive a late arrival.

One thing this page will not do is promise a score. No tutor can guarantee a specific result on any examination, and anybody who offers a target score as a commitment is making a claim they cannot support. What is honest is that technique and pacing are teachable, that practice under genuine timing produces the only reliable evidence of where points are going, and that a block of focused work before a sitting is better value than a year of general support.

06

Materials, authorship and what a tutor should refuse

Subject guides, specifications, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson and the examination bodies that publish them. A provider distributing them as downloads is reproducing copyrighted material, and for unreleased papers it is a malpractice exposure as well. Reference and link so that a parent reads the authoritative document rather than somebody's summary of it. Everything factual on this page should be confirmed that way through the school.

On assessed work the line is authorship and it is not a matter of degree. A tutor may teach content, explain each criterion in the board's published wording, show how a comparable piece is built, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses, and teach them to fix it themselves. A tutor may not write the internal assessment, draft the Extended Essay, or edit a piece to completion so that the words become theirs. On the transcript track the same applies to coursework, projects and lab reports that carry a grade.

A page in this search result sells completed internal assessment work at a fixed price. Submitting work that is not the candidate's own is malpractice under the board's rules, and the consequence lands on the student's qualification rather than the seller's business. A useful test for anybody offering coursework help is to ask what they would do if your child requested one written paragraph. A refusal with a description of the alternative is the right answer.

On permits, the relevant fact is that the cost is zero. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's own service with a stated two working days to complete. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's school.

07

Getting started, and the position of this site

Three pieces of information make a sensible start possible, and all are free. Which track the problem sits on: a transcript course, an Advanced Placement examination, or an IB Diploma subject. For the Diploma, the level and which component is carrying the lowest marks. And for a transcript course, how the semester grade is composed, because the balance between tests, projects and finals varies by course and determines whether intervention now can still change anything.

Then test the tutor on the track rather than the subject. Ask what the free-response rubric rewards in an Advanced Placement paper, or which Diploma investigation criterion cannot be repaired after data collection, or how a semester grade is weighted in the course your child is taking. A specialist answers in a sentence. Somebody whose experience sits in a different system will answer in general terms, which is itself the information.

Run the trial lesson in the slot you actually intend to use rather than a convenient demonstration hour, because a Dubai afternoon commute is the real constraint on whether an arrangement survives a term. Then insist on a diagnostic in the first fortnight — a timed paper or a marked draft, returned with losses attributed by cause — and a written risk list reviewed monthly with the marked work attached.

And position, stated plainly. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International, Pearson, the College Board, the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Department of Education and Knowledge, the Sharjah Private Education Authority or the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It holds no such relationship, claims none, operates no premises in the UAE, has no arrangement with any school named on this page, publishes no star rating, promises no examination score, and quotes no statistic without its source and date.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Communities in this catchment, noted for the one thing that affects planning here: whether a student can realistically sit a timed practice paper on a weekday or whether that belongs at the weekend.

Al Barsha 1, 2 and 3

Close enough that a weekday timed paper is viable, which matters on a track where Advanced Placement and SAT practice both need full-length sittings. Sessions at 16:30 are achievable on most days.

Barsha Heights

Apartment towers with the shortest journey in the catchment. Full-length practice at the weekend still works better, but midweek teaching sessions can start early enough to be genuinely useful rather than token.

Al Quoz

Short in distance with unpredictable traffic on the Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail approaches. Timed sittings belong at the weekend; midweek evenings suit shorter technique and review work instead.

Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah

Coastal communities with a moderate but peak-sensitive run. Families here tend to settle on one weekday teaching session plus a weekend morning reserved for anything requiring a full sitting.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Triangle

Dense apartment communities with heavy peak queuing. The usable weekday window is narrow, which makes weekend mornings the only realistic home for full-length practice papers.

Dubai Hills Estate

A short drive through one of the heavier corridors. Teaching from 17:30 is workable; a three-hour practice sitting after that commute measures fatigue rather than ability.

Dubai Marina and JLT

A long peak commute, realistically placing weekday sessions at 18:00 or later. Everything full-length belongs at the weekend, and midweek work should be short and technique-focused.

Arjan and Dubai Science Park

Mid-ring communities with journeys that vary widely day to day. A fixed online slot absorbs the variation, and a protected weekend morning carries the practice sittings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say which track the problem sits on

A transcript course, an Advanced Placement examination, or an IB Diploma subject. They are assessed so differently that a tutor matched to the wrong track will teach the right content in the wrong shape, and naming it removes two sessions of discovery from the start.

  2. 02

For a transcript course, ask how the grade is composed

The balance between tests, projects, participation and finals varies by course and determines whether intervention now can still change anything. A semester already two-thirds assessed is largely set, and that is worth knowing before buying twelve weeks of support for it.

  3. 03

Buy transcript support early and AP support in a block

A recorded semester grade cannot be improved, only averaged, so preventive support in weeks one to four is where the value is. An Advanced Placement score is independent of the course grade, so a six to eight week block of past-paper work before May is better value than a year of general help.

  4. 04

Test the tutor on the track, not the subject

Ask what the free-response rubric rewards, or which Diploma investigation criterion cannot be repaired after data collection, or how the semester grade is weighted. A specialist answers in a sentence; an answer in general terms tells you their experience sits in a different system.

  5. 05

    Check the equivalency documentation early

The American track cites at least 450 in SAT Math and English through IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT reading and writing 450. A strong transcript with no qualifying test score is a documentation gap. Verify your own case through the Ministry of Education's own channel rather than any tutoring site.

  6. 06

Keep full-length practice at the weekend

A three-hour sitting after a Dubai afternoon commute measures fatigue rather than ability. Midweek sessions handle technique, review and question-type work; weekend mornings carry the full timed papers that produce the only reliable evidence of where points are going.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Two measurement systems explained as different machines

A grade point average accumulates and cannot be unwound; an IB score is assembled at the end from identifiable components. That single difference decides when tutoring should arrive, and most families get it backwards by buying transcript support late and Diploma support early.

AP and IB compared on structure

Independent single-subject examinations against a package with a compulsory core and internal assessment in every subject. Neither is harder; they suit different students, and a student who misses deadlines will find the Diploma core punishing in a way subject tutoring cannot fix.

The American-track equivalency rules published

SAT Math 450, and English via IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT reading and writing 450. A respectable transcript with no qualifying test score is a documentation gap, and four of the ten query clusters researched for this market do not mention equivalency at all.

No IB equivalency figure, because none could be sourced

The British-track and American-track numbers are published and appear here. No IB points threshold could be verified from any official source, so none is printed, even though a competitor page publishes one and another states the wrong IGCSE subject count.

The crossing into the Diploma named precisely

Published criteria instead of a classroom rubric, an independent research piece to a hard word cap, and long papers drawing on a whole course. Those are the three gaps, and research design in the sciences investigation cannot be repaired once data has been collected.

No score promised, ever

Technique and pacing are teachable and practice under genuine timing produces real evidence, but no tutor can guarantee a specific result on any examination. Anybody offering a target score as a commitment is making a claim they cannot support.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How does a grade point average differ from an IB score out of 45?+

A grade point average accumulates: semester grades are recorded, weighted and averaged, and once a semester closes its grade is permanent and can only be diluted by later ones. An IB score is assembled at the end from six subject grades of one to seven plus up to three core points, with 24 the minimum for the diploma. The transcript rewards consistency across years; the Diploma rewards end performance plus deadline management on internal assessment.

Does a strong class grade predict a strong Advanced Placement score?+

Not reliably, because the two measure different things. The Advanced Placement score comes from a single external examination in May, reported from one to five, and is independent of the transcript grade for the same course. A student can hold a strong course grade and a weak score, or the reverse. Preparation for the examination is a separate activity from doing well in class, centred on past papers and the free-response rubric rather than on classroom study.

Does a tutor visit homes in Al Barsha?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service that exists only in India. Lessons are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Dubai's in-home market publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, read in October 2026. For a course-specific problem the relevant question is whether the tutor has taught that course.

When is the best time to buy support for a transcript course?+

Weeks one to four of a semester, before a grade is substantially set. Because semester grades accumulate and cannot be improved once recorded, the value here is preventive rather than remedial: a bad month in Grade 10 produces a small permanent reduction in the number a university eventually reads. Support bought in week twelve can only influence whatever assessment remains, which is usually a minority of the grade.

What do UAE equivalency rules require on the American track?+

The sourced position cites English proficiency through a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics through at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. That is a testing requirement rather than a subject count, so a strong transcript with no qualifying test score is a documentation gap. Verify your own case through the Ministry of Education's own channel.

Where can a Dubai American Academy family get the IB equivalency threshold?+

Because no official source for one could be verified for this project. The published clarification that was read states requirements for the British and American tracks and names no IB points threshold, and the International Baccalaureate's own site returns an error to automated checking. Publishing an invented figure would be worse than publishing nothing, because a family might plan around it. One competitor page already publishes an incorrect IGCSE subject count.

What does a student from an American middle school find hardest in the IB Diploma?+

Three things, and none is content. Being marked against published criteria with named descriptors rather than a classroom rubric, so good work can satisfy none of them. Producing an independent research piece to a hard word cap, which is project management rather than writing ability. And sitting long papers drawing on a whole course in any order, which rewards sustained multi-step explanation and is the slowest of the three to fix.

Which IB internal assessment criterion is most urgent?+

Research design in the sciences investigation, because it is the only one of the four that cannot be repaired once the data has been collected. It covers the research question, the controlled variables and whether enough data was planned. The investigation is capped at 3,000 words and marked out of twenty-four, with research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation each carrying six marks. A planning session before any practical work is the highest-value hour in the subject.

Is Advanced Placement or the IB Diploma better for a Dubai American Academy student?+

Neither is harder; they suit different students. Advanced Placement lets a student concentrate on their strongest area with no breadth requirement and no core, and each result stands alone. The Diploma requires six subjects, an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, and produces one number out of 45. A student who misses deadlines will find the Diploma core punishing in a way that subject tutoring cannot repair, and that is the strongest single signal.

Where does SAT preparation belong in a tutoring plan?+

As a separate block rather than inside subject support, because it is technique rather than content: question-type recognition, pacing, strategic omission and handling the format. It has a second relevance in the UAE, since the sourced equivalency requirements cite at least 450 in SAT Math and allow 450 in reading and writing as one route to the English requirement. Full-length timed practice belongs at the weekend, not after a Dubai afternoon commute.

Can a tutor guarantee an Advanced Placement or SAT score?+

No, and anybody offering a target score as a commitment is making a claim they cannot support. What is honest is that technique and pacing are teachable, that practice under genuine timing is the only reliable way to find where points are going, and that a focused block before a sitting generally produces more than a year of unfocused support. Ask for the baseline from a full timed paper and the comparison after four weeks instead of a promise.

How many full practice papers should my child sit before May?+

Fewer than families imagine, used properly. One paper sat under genuine timing, marked against the published rubric and analysed for where points went is worth more than several worked through casually, because the casual version produces familiarity rather than improvement. In the final six to eight weeks, one full timed paper a week with the losses compared against the previous week is a realistic and effective pattern, with nothing new added in the last fortnight.

My child is moving from an IGCSE school into an American high school. What changes?+

Continuous assessment, for the first time. At IGCSE almost everything is decided by terminal papers, so a weak autumn can be recovered. On a transcript, grades accumulate from week three of every semester and a recorded grade is permanent. Students from a British background routinely underestimate how much an early weak semester costs, because nothing in their previous system behaved that way. Preventive support from the start of a semester is the appropriate response.

Do tutors working with Dubai students need a UAE permit?+

Yes, and it costs nothing. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's own service with a stated two working days to complete. Eligible applicants include school-registered teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one brings fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

Name the track, then pick the moment

For a Dubai American Academy family the useful first step is naming which measurement is in play. A transcript course, where grades accumulate and support belongs in week two rather than week twelve. An Advanced Placement examination, where the score is independent of the class grade and a block before May is the efficient purchase. Or an IB Diploma subject, where a named component with a published weighting is the target. Then test the tutor on that track specifically and insist on a diagnostic in the first fortnight. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
