Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 Home Tutor in Dubai

Hiring a Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 home tutor in Dubai is usually an act of faith: somebody turns up, says the sessions are going well, and you find out in August whether that was true. This page describes the alternative. Every piece of work your child produces is marked against the published scheme, logged in an error ledger by cause and by topic, and sent to you in a fortnightly pack you can read in five minutes and take to the school.

  • An error ledger by cause and topic, updated from every marked script
  • A fortnightly document pack, readable in five minutes
  • Lessons run live online over video, never as a visit to a UAE address
  • First session is free, and the marked diagnostic is yours regardless

Chemistry tutoring you can audit

There is a particular frustration Dubai parents describe about science tutoring, and it is not about price or availability. It is that nothing is checkable. A tutor arrives, an hour passes behind a closed door, the report is that your son is getting there, and in August a grade arrives that either justifies the year or does not. No marked work, no record of what was attempted, nothing that could be compared with what the school says. By the time the evidence exists, the series is over.

The alternative is not complicated, it is just rarely offered: write everything down in a form that survives the week. In practice that means three documents. An error ledger, which lists every lost mark from every marked script by cause and by topic area, with a running total. A fortnightly pack, which is the ledger plus the marked script plus two lines on what the next fortnight will do. And a termly review, which sets the first ledger against the current one so a term's work can be judged rather than believed. None of that requires new technology. It requires that somebody marks the work and keeps the record.

For chemistry specifically, the record matters more than in most subjects, because 0620 hides its causes well. Twelve topic areas sit in the syllabus and one of them, stoichiometry, is the machinery that at least six of the others run on. A student insecure in moles will lose marks in acids and bases, in electrochemistry, in energetics, in the metals questions and in the analysis questions, and the school's own data will show a general chemistry weakness. The ledger shows something different: the same cause appearing in five different topics. That is a four to six session repair presenting itself as a syllabus-wide problem, and only the record tells the two apart.

The honest position on delivery, stated before you read any further. The URL says home tutor because that is what Dubai families type, and the question behind it is a fair one. IB Gram does not send tutors to houses, villas or apartments anywhere in the UAE; visiting tuition is something we run only in India. Chemistry lessons for Dubai students are delivered live online, one to one, over video, with a shared screen for equations and mechanisms. One consequence is directly relevant to this page: when the work happens on a shared screen, the evidence trail is automatic. Every annotated equation and every marked script already exists as a file, which is why the documentation is routine rather than an extra service.

What follows is the detail. How the ledger is built in the first fortnight, what the twelve topics usually reveal, what each document is for, why a mark gain often does not move a grade, how the formats compare on what you can actually verify, how to read your centre's own mock history, and where the boundaries sit on what a tutor may touch.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four points on the Cambridge and International Baccalaureate ladders where Dubai chemistry students sit, described by what evidence is available at each stage. The amount of marked work a family can actually see varies enormously between them, which changes what a tutor needs to generate.

LOWER SECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary Science

Three years of combined science before the IGCSE option choice, with Checkpoint tests at the end of Year 9 in March, May and October windows. Assessment is largely internal and descriptive, so there is very little marked external-standard work for a parent to look at, and almost no calculation.

In Dubai this is the stage where a numerical weakness becomes invisible rather than absent. A student can finish Year 9 with good science reports and no experience of a quantitative chemistry question. An early diagnostic in Year 9 is the cheapest evidence a family can buy, because it reveals the gap before the 0620 content starts arriving.

0620Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry

Twelve topic areas, no coursework, examined through a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical component. Core candidates cap at grade C; Extended candidates reach A*. Every mark is examined externally, which means there is an enormous amount of past material against which a student's work can be marked honestly.

This is the stage where the ledger approach earns its keep in Dubai, because schools vary widely in how much marked work they return. Some send every assessment home annotated; others report a percentage. Where the school returns little, a tutor's marked scripts are the only external-standard evidence a family has.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme Sciences

Criterion-based assessment against four strands rather than paper weightings, with investigation and reflection tasks carrying real weight. Students receive criterion levels rather than marks, which is informative about skills and unhelpful for predicting performance on a timed written paper.

Several Dubai schools run MYP to Year 11 and enter students for external IGCSE papers alongside it, or move them into a Cambridge pathway at Year 10. Those students need marked timed papers specifically, because criterion levels do not tell a family how a ninety-minute written chemistry paper will go.

ASAges 16-17 · Year 12

Cambridge International AS Level Chemistry

Where 0620 leads for Dubai students continuing the subject. AS Chemistry treats mole calculations as reflex background, adds organic mechanisms with electron movement shown, quantitative equilibrium and a formal practical skills assessment. The step is largest for students who reached a strong IGCSE grade through worked-example recall.

Entry commonly requires a grade A or B at Extended 0620 at Dubai schools, and chemistry is a prerequisite for medicine and many engineering routes. Where that threshold is live, the ledger becomes a planning document: it shows whether the gap to the threshold is one cause or several.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The subjects Dubai families most often ask about alongside Chemistry 0620, described by what a marked script in each one actually reveals. The evidence looks different in each case, and that changes what is worth tracking.

Chemistry (0620)

Core and Extended

A marked 0620 script separates cleanly into calculation losses, equation-writing losses, description losses and practical-skills losses. That separation is what makes the subject unusually diagnosable: the same script shows whether the problem is arithmetic, chemical language or exam technique.

Biology (0610)

Core and Extended

A marked biology script shows language precision above all. Lost marks cluster on answers that are nearly right in everyday terms and wrong in the mark scheme's terms, which is why a biology ledger tracks wording rather than topics in its first column.

Physics (0625)

Core and Extended

A marked physics script reveals unit and prefix handling faster than any other subject, because the errors are visible as answers out by factors of a thousand. Shares the practical component's skills with chemistry closely enough that one repair covers both.

Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

The script that most often explains a chemistry ledger. Where chemistry losses trace to ratio, proportion, rearrangement or standard form, the same errors appear in the maths paper in undisguised form, and the cheaper intervention is usually there.

Co-ordinated Sciences (0654)

Double award

Combined papers mean a marked script shows recall switching between disciplines as a separate skill. Students lose marks at the seams, where a question moves from a chemical idea to a biological one, and that pattern only shows up on a full paper rather than on topic exercises.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Extended only

A marked 0606 script is a useful control. A student secure here whose chemistry calculations still fail is not having an arithmetic problem, which narrows the chemistry diagnosis to chemical reasoning and saves weeks of misdirected work.

English as a Second Language (0510)

Core and Extended

Relevant because multi-clause chemistry question stems are a reading problem before they are a chemistry one. A marked ESL script showing comprehension losses often predicts chemistry marks lost on questions the student could otherwise answer.

Geography (0460)

Core and Extended

Its data-response questions test the same skills as the chemistry practical paper: describe a trend, quote figures with units, identify an anomaly and suggest a cause. A strong geography data script is evidence that practical-paper losses are conventions rather than reasoning.

Business Studies (0450)

Core and Extended

Frequently taken alongside chemistry by Dubai students keeping two routes open. Its marked scripts show command-term discipline clearly, and a student who separates explain from describe in business usually can in chemistry once the convention is named.

Computer Science (0478)

Core and Extended

Marked scripts here show method-shown-versus-answer-asserted habits more starkly than any other subject, because partially correct algorithms earn partial marks only when written out. The same habit transfers directly to chemistry calculation layout.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways the documented approach runs, differing in how often evidence is generated rather than in teaching style. All are delivered live online, one to one, over video with a shared annotated screen.

Diagnostic and ledger build

Two to three sessions that exist to produce evidence rather than to teach. Your child sits paper sections unaided under timing, the work is marked against the published scheme, and the first ledger is built. Families frequently stop here, take the ledger to the school, and decide afterwards.

  • Paper sections across the twelve topic areas, sat unaided
  • Every lost mark logged by cause and by topic
  • First ledger delivered as a one-page document
  • No commitment to further sessions attached

Weekly sessions with a fortnightly pack

The standard arrangement across a term or a year. One session a week on the cause the ledger ranks first, with a marked timed section every second week so the ledger stays current. The pack lands on a fixed day so you know when to expect it.

  • Fixed weekly hour on Gulf Standard Time
  • Marked script every fortnight, with scheme wording quoted
  • Ledger reissued with each pack, totals updated
  • Termly review setting the first ledger beside the current one

Practical-component block

A self-contained run on the practical paper, which carries a fifth of the grade and generates the clearest evidence in the subject because its mark scheme is so consistent. Progress here is visible within two sessions, which makes it a useful place to start when a family is unsure about tutoring at all.

  • Four to six sessions, independent of the theory work
  • Tables and graphs marked to convention before any chemistry
  • Error and improvement phrasing rehearsed against the scheme
  • Before-and-after marked questions on the same skills

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a Dubai family is really asking for with cambridge IGCSE chemistry 0620 home tutor in Dubai

  • Dubai in-home market rate: roughly AED 180-500 per hour with travel included
  • What is usually missing is a record, not a qualification
  • Online delivery makes the evidence trail automatic rather than extra
  • No tutor is placed in a UAE home; that is an India-only service

The search is for somebody competent, nearby and accountable. The market answers the first two and almost never the third. Agencies in Dubai will place a qualified adult in your sitting room for somewhere between AED 180 and AED 500 an hour with travel inside the figure, from a pool limited to whoever can reach your community before the session starts. Marketplaces will list independent tutors by neighbourhood with no verification. In both cases what you get back at the end of an hour is a verbal impression.

The accountability gap is the one worth closing, and it is not a function of where the tutor sits. A tutor in your kitchen can keep no records at all; a tutor on a screen can keep every one. What matters is whether the work gets marked to the standard the examination will use, and whether the result is written down somewhere you can read it. So the honest framing of the choice is not online against in-home, it is documented against undocumented, and the formats differ only in which one makes documentation automatic.

On the in-home question directly, because you asked it by searching: IB Gram does not arrange home visits in Dubai, and tutors are not sent to any UAE address. That service exists only in India. For a student who needs an adult physically present in order to work at all, an in-home arrangement has a real advantage that a screen does not match, and we will say so on a call rather than take a booking we think will fail. For everything else, the case for online is that the specialist pool is not limited by driving distance and the evidence trail already exists as files.

02

The first fortnight: building the chemistry error ledger

The ledger is a single page with one row per lost mark, collapsed into classes. Your child sits sections of a recent paper at the right tier, unaided, under timing. Each lost mark is then assigned a cause and a topic area, and the causes total up. The output is not a percentage but a sentence of the form: fourteen marks lost to mole-ratio setup across four topics, seven to unbalanced equations, five to describe-versus-explain, three to significant figures.

That sentence is what makes the plan arguable rather than assumed. A family looking at fourteen marks concentrated in one cause can see why four sessions on stoichiometry comes before any revision of organic chemistry, even though organic chemistry is what the school is teaching this month. Without the ledger, that sequencing decision looks like a tutor's preference. With it, the sequencing is arithmetic, and you can disagree with it on the evidence if you want to.

The error classes in chemistry are stable enough to tabulate. Mole-ratio setup, equation balancing, state symbols and formulae, observation versus explanation, particle-level reasoning, significant figures and units, and practical conventions account for the overwhelming majority of lost marks on 0620 scripts we mark from Dubai schools. Each has a recognisable look on the page and a different repair length, which is the information in the table below. The point of naming them is that each repair is far shorter than reteaching a topic, and several transfer across the whole syllabus.

0620 ERROR CLASSES — HOW EACH ONE LOOKS ON A MARKED SCRIPT

Practical conventionsInconsistent decimal places, poor scale choice, vague improvementExperimental techniques and chemical analysisFour to six sessions
03

Twelve topics, one tally: where the evidence usually points

The second column of the ledger is topic, and it behaves differently from the cause column. Causes concentrate; topics spread. A single insecure cause will light up five topics, which is exactly why a topic-only reading of a script sends families towards a general chemistry rescue when a specific repair would do. Reading the two columns together is the whole technique.

Across the 0620 scripts we mark from Dubai schools, the first diagnosis lands in recognisable places. Stoichiometry is the most common and the most consequential, because it is upstream of so much else. Acids, bases and salts is the most common presenting complaint, because it is where the mole problem first becomes visible to a student. Electrochemistry produces the most confident wrong answers, because students learn the anode and cathode rules as labels rather than as electron destinations. Organic chemistry generates the most anxiety and often the fewest actual lost marks, since its questions are more predictable than their reputation.

The table sets out what a first diagnosis most often finds in each area. It is not a prediction about your child; it is a description of the pattern, which tells you what kind of finding to expect and what evidence it rests on. Where your child's ledger disagrees with it, the ledger is right and the pattern is irrelevant. That is the point of keeping one rather than working from a general impression of what Year 11 students find hard.

What arrives in your inbox, and what each document decides

Documentation only helps if it is short and if each piece supports a specific decision. Four documents do the work, and none of them takes more than five minutes to read. Sending a parent a twelve-page report every month is not transparency; it is a way of being unreadable while appearing thorough.

The marked script is the raw evidence: your child's own handwriting, annotated with the mark-scheme wording that earned or missed each mark. The ledger is the summary, one page, causes and topics with running totals. The fortnight note is two lines saying what the next two weeks will target and why, which is where you can push back. The termly review puts the first ledger beside the current one, and it is the only document that can honestly answer whether the term worked.

What this is for, beyond reassurance, is leverage. Dubai schools respond to specifics. A parent who writes to a head of science saying my daughter seems to be struggling in chemistry receives a sympathetic reply. A parent who writes saying her last two marked papers show nineteen marks lost to mole-ratio setup across four topics, and we would like to discuss whether the Extended entry is still right, receives a meeting. Families use these documents most often for exactly that conversation, and for tier and set decisions where evidence beats advocacy. The pack is also portable: it belongs to you, it survives a change of tutor or of school, and nothing in it depends on our continued involvement to remain readable.

Why marks move before grades do

  • Grade boundaries are set per series, not fixed at a percentage
  • A nine-mark gain is real whether or not it crosses a boundary that year
  • No provider controls the paper, the cohort or the boundary
  • Any published improvement statistic without sample, date and method is unverifiable

The most common disappointment in a documented approach is a term where the ledger improves and the grade does not. It is worth understanding why that happens, because the instinct is to conclude the tutoring failed when the evidence usually says the opposite.

Grades are awarded against boundaries, and boundaries are not fixed percentages. They are set after each series in light of how the cohort performed and how demanding the paper proved to be. So a student who gains nine marks across a paper may cross a boundary or may land just below the same one they were below before. Nine marks is nine marks either way, and in the next series with a slightly different paper those nine marks are what moves the grade. A ledger showing nineteen lost marks reduced to ten is unambiguous progress regardless of the letter it produced on one occasion.

This is also the reason no honest provider promises a grade. Nobody controls the paper, the cohort or the boundary. What can be stated is what the evidence shows: which causes have reduced, by how many marks, and which remain. We will not publish a figure for typical improvement either, because any such number without a stated sample, date and method is unverifiable, and this market is full of them. The claim we will make is narrower and checkable: you will hold the marked work, so the question of whether progress happened is yours to answer rather than ours to assert.

06

In-home or online, judged on what you can actually verify

Most comparisons of these two formats argue about atmosphere. The more useful comparison asks what a parent can check afterwards, because that is the thing that determines whether a term's spend was worthwhile and the thing both formats are usually silent about.

The differences are concrete. In-home work happens on paper that stays in the house or leaves with the tutor; online work happens on a board that is saved as a file. In-home marking depends entirely on whether the tutor chooses to do it and keep it; online marking lands in your inbox because the script was already digital. An in-home session leaves a memory; a recorded session leaves a recording your child can re-watch the week before a mock. None of this makes an in-home tutor worse at chemistry. It makes the in-home arrangement harder to audit, and auditing is what this page is about.

The honest entries in the table are the ones where in-home wins. Physical presence for a student who needs supervision. Reading a teenager's body language, which is harder on a screen. Writing equations by hand side by side, which some students genuinely find easier than a tablet. Those are real, and they are why we tell some Dubai families that the online format is the wrong purchase for their child. The rest of the comparison favours the documented, online arrangement, and the reason is mechanical rather than philosophical: work that is already a file gets marked, stored and sent without anyone having to decide to do it.

Mock to final: reading your centre's own history

  • Ask how mocks have mapped to final grades at your centre recently
  • Check which paper the mock came from and at which tier
  • A mock drawn from material taught in class measures recall of the lesson
  • Where school data and unseen marked scripts disagree, that is the finding

One piece of evidence costs nothing and almost no Dubai family asks for it: how mock grades at your child's school have mapped onto final grades in recent series. Schools hold this. Heads of science generally know it. It changes how a mock result should be read, and therefore whether a panic in December is warranted.

Some centres mark mocks deliberately harshly, using boundaries a grade stricter than the real ones, on the view that a shock in December produces work in January. At those schools a grade five mock is routinely a grade six or seven in June, and a family that spends the Christmas holiday in crisis has misread a deliberate signal. Other centres set mocks on generous internal boundaries or on a paper the class has partly seen, and at those schools a comfortable mock is not evidence of anything. Knowing which kind of school you are in is the single most valuable piece of context for interpreting your child's marks.

Alongside that, ask two further questions. Which paper was the mock drawn from, and was it at the right tier? A Core-tier mock tells you nothing about Extended readiness, and a mock built from a paper the class worked through in lessons measures recall of that lesson rather than chemistry. The ledger approach handles this by marking unseen past-paper sections at the correct tier, which is a different measurement from the school's and is meant to be compared with it rather than to replace it. Where the two disagree sharply, that disagreement is itself the finding worth taking to the school.

08

Ramadan, half terms and planning evidence around a Dubai year

  • Move sessions to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan rather than cancelling
  • Use half terms for the self-contained practical-component block
  • Keep the weeks around a mock for timed unseen papers
  • Summer stoichiometry work before Year 11 is the highest-leverage block in 0620

A documented approach depends on regular marked work, and the Dubai academic year does not run evenly. Half terms, National Day, Ramadan with its shortened school days and shifted family routines, Eid, and the long summer all interrupt the fortnightly rhythm. A plan built as though the year were uniform collapses at the first interruption and then quietly stops producing evidence at all.

The practical answer is to plan the interruptions in rather than around. During Ramadan, sessions commonly move to post-Iftar timing, and families frequently reduce frequency for the month rather than cancelling, which keeps the ledger alive at a lower intensity. Half terms are the best windows in the year for a practical-component block, because it is self-contained and does not depend on the school's teaching sequence continuing. The weeks either side of a mock are for timed papers rather than new content, since that is when a marked unseen paper is most informative.

The summer is the most misused period. Students who finish Year 10 with an unsecured mole concept arrive in Year 11 in September and have the remaining syllabus taught on top of a gap, and that is the single most common way a 0620 grade ends up below potential. Six to eight sessions across July and August on stoichiometry alone, documented in a ledger, is the highest-leverage block available in this subject, and it is also the easiest to schedule because nothing competes with it. Where families travel over the summer, the online format follows the timezone rather than ending the arrangement.

09

What a tutor may do to a piece of chemistry work

  • 0620 carries no coursework: every mark is examined at the centre
  • At Diploma level a tutor may give feedback on a draft and never produce it
  • Official papers and schemes are cited, not redistributed
  • The MoHRE permit is free for two years under Resolution 710 of 2023

A documented approach raises an obvious question: if a tutor is marking and annotating your child's work, where is the line? For Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry the answer is clean, because 0620 carries no coursework. Every mark comes from a paper sat under supervision at the centre, so there is no assessed artefact a tutor could improperly influence. Marking practice papers is marking practice, not marking an assessment.

The line matters more at the next stage, and it is worth knowing now because many Dubai students move into an International Baccalaureate Diploma where chemistry carries an internally assessed investigation. There the rule is strict and does not change with the price paid: a tutor may teach the method, discuss the plan, explain the assessment criteria and give feedback on a student's own draft, and may never write, complete or redraft the work. Providers selling finished internal assessments exist in this market and the student carries the consequence, which under academic-honesty rules can be severe.

Two further boundaries apply regardless of stage. Syllabus documents, question papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the board's copyright property, so a tutor cites them and points to the official source rather than distributing a folder of files. And diagnostic work has to be the student's own or it diagnoses nothing, which is why the trial session has your child writing rather than watching. On permits: private tutoring in the UAE is permitted and regulated, with the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued through MoHRE and granted free of charge for two years. Individuals tutoring in the UAE without it are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so any specific figure quoted elsewhere is unsourced.

Where we tutor

Where our 0620 students study, and when the evidence arrives

Sessions reach every Dubai community over video, so these notes are not about distance. They describe when the school clusters in each area generate marked work, because the assessment calendar decides when a ledger can first be built from real evidence rather than from a diagnostic.

Al Safa and Al Wasl

Long-established British school catchments with autumn assessment cycles that return annotated work. Families here often arrive with a folder of marked papers already, which means the first session can skip the diagnostic and go straight to the ledger.

Jumeirah 1 to 3

A dense cluster of secondary schools with early mock calendars, often in late November. That makes the autumn half term the natural point to start, so a ledger exists before the mock rather than being built from it.

Emirates Hills and The Lakes

Smaller sets at higher-fee schools, with detailed written reporting as standard. The useful work here is comparison: setting the school's own assessment data beside externally marked scripts to see whether the two agree.

Green Community and Dubai Investment Park

Schools serving a spread-out catchment with assessment weeks that fall later in each term. Diagnostic papers matter more in this area because less marked work comes home before February.

Remraam and Dubailand Residences

Newer communities with large year groups and percentage-based reporting rather than annotated scripts. Almost every family here starts with a diagnostic paper, since there is no external-standard marked work to read.

Al Mizhar and Al Twar

Mixed curriculum intakes where some students sit IGCSE alongside another qualification. The ledger separates the two workloads, which is often the first time a family sees which subject is actually absorbing the study time.

Al Sufouh and Knowledge Village

International schools with International Baccalaureate and Cambridge pathways side by side. Students moving between criterion-based and marks-based assessment need timed marked papers early, because criterion levels do not predict paper performance.

Schools with early autumn assessment cycles

These schools generate marked work before December, so a ledger can be built from the school's own evidence rather than from a diagnostic. Students we support from this group typically arrive in October with a mock already behind them.

Photographs of annotated papers, assessment sheets, even a scribbled teacher comment. If nothing has come home, say so, because that tells us the first sessions need to generate evidence rather than read it. Either way the first conversation starts from paper.

  2. 02

    Sit a short unaided diagnostic

Sections spread across the twelve topic areas, at the tier your child is entered for, under timing and without help. This runs as the free trial session with no card details requested, and the marked result is yours whether or not anything follows.

  3. 03

    Receive the first ledger

One page: lost marks by cause, by topic, with totals. It arrives before any teaching plan is proposed, so the plan can be argued about on evidence. Several families take this document to the school and come back later, which is a legitimate use of it.

  4. 04

Agree the first two causes and the order

The ledger usually points at two causes rather than twelve topics. Those two, in a stated order, become the block. Everything else is explicitly parked, so later you can check whether the stated plan is the plan that actually ran.

  5. 05

    Fortnightly packs, termly review

A marked script, an updated ledger and a two-line note every fortnight in term time. Once a term the first ledger goes beside the current one, and that comparison decides whether to continue, change the frequency or stop.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Everything is written down

Marked scripts, a causes ledger with running totals, a two-line plan note and a termly comparison. The question of whether a term of chemistry tutoring worked becomes something you can answer from documents rather than something you have to take on trust.

Causes are tracked separately from topics

One insecure cause lights up five topic areas and looks like a syllabus-wide problem. Keeping the two columns apart is what turns a term of general chemistry rescue into a four to six session repair, and it only works if somebody keeps the record.

The evidence is yours to keep

Packs, scripts and ledgers belong to you, including after the arrangement ends. Families most often use them for tier and set conversations with a Dubai head of science, where specific mark counts carry more weight than a parent's impression.

No improvement statistics, because none would be verifiable

You will not find a percentage of students who improved on this page. A statistic without a sample, a date and a method is unverifiable, and this market is full of them. What is offered instead is your own child's marked work, fortnight by fortnight.

Direct about the format and its limits

Lessons are live online over video; no tutor is placed in a UAE home. Where a student needs physical supervision more than a chemistry specialist, an in-home arrangement is genuinely better and we will say that on the call instead of taking the booking.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What exactly do I receive after a fortnight of chemistry sessions?+

Three things, none longer than a page. Your child's marked script, annotated with the mark-scheme wording that earned or missed each mark. The error ledger, listing lost marks by cause and by topic area with running totals carried from the previous pack. And a two-line note saying what the next fortnight will target and why. The whole pack takes about five minutes to read. A twelve-page monthly report is not transparency; it is a way of being thorough and unreadable at the same time.

My daughter's marks went up eight but her grade did not change. Is that progress?+

Yes, and the ledger is the reason you can tell. Grade boundaries are set after each series according to how the cohort performed and how demanding the paper was, so eight marks may cross a boundary or land just below the same one. The marks themselves are the durable gain: in the next series, with a different paper, those eight are what moves the letter. A ledger showing nineteen lost marks reduced to eleven is unambiguous whatever grade the single occasion produced.

Can I see the mark scheme wording you used on my son's script?+

It is written on the script. Where a mark was missed, the annotation quotes what the published scheme accepts, next to what your son wrote. That comparison is usually the most useful thing in the pack, because the gap is often small and specific: the current increases rather than the current gets bigger, bond breaking is endothermic rather than energy is needed. We work from and cite the official Cambridge documents rather than distributing them, since they are the board's copyright material.

Do you keep a record I can show my child's school?+

That is one of the main uses families make of it. The ledger is a one-page document with mark counts by cause and topic, and Dubai heads of science respond to that in a way they do not respond to a general concern. Parents most often use it for tier conversations, set placement and questions about whether an Extended entry is still appropriate. The pack belongs to you, including after the arrangement ends, and nothing in it depends on our continued involvement.

How do I tell whether a chemistry tutor is diagnosing or just teaching?+

Ask for the first session's output in writing before the second session. A tutor who is diagnosing can tell you which causes the lost marks fell into and roughly how many marks each cause cost. A tutor who is teaching will describe topics covered. Both can be good teachers, but only the first can explain why they are spending four weeks on moles while the school teaches organic chemistry. If the answer to why this order is because it is the next chapter, you are buying coverage rather than repair.

Which 0620 topic does the first diagnosis most often land on?+

Stoichiometry, by a wide margin, and usually presenting as something else. Acids and bases is the most common complaint because that is where a mole weakness first becomes visible to a student, but the cause sits upstream. Electrochemistry produces the most confident wrong answers, since anode and cathode get learned as labels rather than as electron destinations. Organic chemistry generates the most anxiety and often the fewest real losses, because its question styles are more predictable than their reputation suggests.

My son's school does not return marked papers. What can we use instead?+

Unseen past-paper sections at the correct tier, sat under timing in the first sessions. That is less convenient than reading the school's own marking and in one way better, because it is a measurement nobody has coached. Where a school reports percentages only, this is the sole external-standard evidence a family has. We mark it to the published scheme and build the ledger from it, then compare with whatever the school does report. Sharp disagreement between the two is itself worth raising with the head of science.

Do you send a tutor to our villa in Dubai for chemistry lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not arrange home visits anywhere in the UAE; visiting tuition is a service we run only in India. Chemistry lessons for Dubai students are delivered live online, one to one, over video, with a shared screen for equations and mechanisms. If your child needs an adult physically in the room to sit down and work, an in-home arrangement is genuinely the better purchase and we will say so on the call. Market rates for that in Dubai run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the figure.

How do Ramadan timings change the session plan?+

Sessions commonly move to post-Iftar slots, and most families reduce frequency for the month rather than stopping, which keeps the ledger alive at lower intensity. School days are shortened, routines shift, and a plan that assumes an unbroken fortnightly rhythm simply breaks. Planning the month in advance works better than renegotiating it weekly. The documentation adapts too: a single marked script for the month rather than two, with the note saying explicitly that the pace was reduced by agreement rather than by drift.

What happens if the evidence says the tutoring is not working?+

The termly review is designed to surface exactly that, by setting the first ledger beside the current one. If the targeted causes have not reduced, the sequence changes or the arrangement ends. Continuing unchanged while the record shows no movement is the failure mode a documented approach exists to prevent. Sometimes the finding is that the real problem lies elsewhere, most often in mathematics or in supervision, and in both cases the honest recommendation is to spend the money there instead.

How many marks is a realistic gain over a term in 0620?+

We will not publish a number, and you should be wary of any page that does. A figure without a stated sample, date and method is unverifiable, and this market contains plenty of them. What can be said structurally is that the transferable causes, significant figures, equation balancing and command-term discipline, are each worth marks on every paper once fixed, and that a concentrated cause like mole-ratio setup can account for well over ten marks on a single Extended paper. Your own ledger will give you the real figure.

Does a mock grade at a Dubai school predict the final grade?+

It depends entirely on the centre, which is why the question to ask the head of science is how mocks have mapped onto finals in recent series. Some Dubai schools mark mocks deliberately a grade harsh to produce work in January, and at those schools a December shock is a designed signal rather than news. Others set generous internal boundaries or use a paper the class has partly seen, where a comfortable result means little. Also check the tier: a Core mock tells you nothing about Extended readiness.

Can my child's own notes be used as evidence instead of a paper?+

Notes show effort and organisation, not performance, so they are useful context and poor evidence. What a ledger needs is work produced under the conditions the examination will impose: unaided, timed, on unseen questions at the right tier. A beautifully kept notebook sits alongside a weak paper often enough that treating notes as a proxy is actively misleading. Where a student has a strong notebook and weak marks, that combination is itself a finding, and it usually points at exam technique rather than at content.

What does an error ledger look like after eight weeks?+

A single page with the same cause rows as week one and different totals. Typically two or three causes have dropped substantially, one has barely moved, and one or two new ones have appeared because repairing the first problem exposed the next. The topic tally alongside it shows which of the twelve areas have been assessed and which have not been touched. The useful read is the direction of each row rather than the headline total, and that is also what the termly review discusses.

Do you mark the practical paper questions too?+

Yes, and it is often where the first visible gain appears. The practical component carries a fifth of the grade and has the most consistent mark scheme in the syllabus, so before-and-after marking on the same skills shows movement within two sessions: consistent decimal places in a results table, a scale that fills the grid, a specific source of imprecision rather than a general one, an improvement that changes the method. Ask your head of science which practical route the centre enters, because the timing work differs even though the skills overlap.

Ask for the ledger first

If your child is sitting Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 at a Dubai school, send whatever marked work exists and we will build the first error ledger from it, or from an unaided diagnostic if nothing has come home. That runs as a free trial session with no card details requested, and the marked work is yours whether anything follows or not. Lessons are delivered live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time. What you should expect from any tutor, including us, is evidence you can read.
