IB IGCSE Tutor for Jumeirah College Students in Dubai

An IB IGCSE tutor for Jumeirah College students in Dubai should be able to say which paper carries which percentage before suggesting a plan. This page sets out the science award routes, the maths options above the standard syllabus, and the component weightings that decide where revision hours are worth spending in Al Safa. Lessons are one-to-one, live online, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Science award routes compared: triple, combined and the grade consequences

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Which paper, and what is it worth

The most useful sentence a tutor can say in a first conversation is something like: Paper 4 carries the extended-response questions and most of your lost marks are method marks the examiner could not award. The least useful is that they will cover the syllabus. The difference is not presentation. One statement implies that somebody has read the student's work against a published scheme and knows the component weightings; the other implies nobody has.

At a selective British-curriculum school like Jumeirah College the question is sharper than usual, because the problems are rarely about ability. A student in a strong cohort can be working hard, understanding the content and still sitting two boundaries below where they should be, because the losses are concentrated in a component nobody has looked at. In that situation a general revision plan is almost the worst response available: it spends the hours uniformly across material the student mostly knows.

This page is therefore organised around the structure of the qualifications rather than around reassurance. It sets out the science award routes, because whether a student is entered for three separate science IGCSEs or a combined award changes both the grade outcome and the revision load. It compares the maths options above the standard syllabus, because Additional Mathematics is a different animal from the main course and is often taken by exactly the students who need the least help with it. And it names what each paper tests and roughly what it is worth, because that is what decides where an hour should go.

There is a second reason to be specific. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel both offer International GCSEs in the same subjects with different codes, different paper structures and different tiering rules, and a revision guide bought for the wrong board teaches content that will not be examined in that form. The school's exams officer can confirm every code in a single email, which is the cheapest piece of diligence available and the one most families skip.

What this page will not do is state component weightings as though they were fixed forever. Specifications are revised, and the authoritative figures live on the board's own site for the exact syllabus year the student is entered for. The percentages here are the shape of the assessment and the right way to think about priority; the precise numbers should be read from the live specification rather than from any tutoring site, this one included.

Delivery, once: tutoring for UAE families is one-to-one, live, over video, in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For a component-level plan that is an advantage, because the tutor is chosen for the specific paper rather than for proximity to Al Safa at five o'clock.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Jumeirah College families need subject-level work at three points: the Year 9 options decision, the IGCSE years themselves, and the step into A Level where the assessment changes character.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 and the options decision

The options choice at the end of Year 9 sets the shape of two years and, through it, sixth form. The decisions that matter are the science route, whether to take a second language, and whether Additional Mathematics is on offer. Each has a consequence that is hard to reverse once entries are made.

In a strong Dubai cohort there is pressure to take the most demanding version of everything, which suits some students and quietly damages others. The useful evidence is a timed paper at the level under consideration rather than a current grade, because performance on the actual assessment is what the decision should rest on.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

Terminal papers graded 9-1 or A*-G, marked against a published scheme with marks attached to individual questions. The components differ in what they reward: a calculation paper, an extended-response paper and a written practical-method paper demand three distinct skills, and a student can be strong in one and weak in another within the same subject.

Dubai candidates sit the June series as the main window and November as the resit route. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones and the correct zone timetable must be used; Cambridge states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong version.

A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel A Level

Three or four subjects in depth, with assessment that expects a student to link topics without prompting and to argue rather than organise. The IGCSE habits that produced strong grades, particularly answering the question type a topic announces, stop being sufficient.

University requirements in the UAE and abroad name specific subjects and sometimes specific mathematics routes, and A Level choices made at sixteen close courses two years later. Each institution's published entry requirements are the place to check, before the choice is locked rather than after.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What each subject's components actually test, and which one usually holds the lost marks. These are the courses most often brought by families around Al Safa and Jumeirah.

Biology (Cambridge IGCSE 0610)

Core and Extended

Content volume is high and the losses are usually command words rather than knowledge. Describe, explain, compare and suggest each demand a different answer shape, and accurate biology in the wrong shape earns nothing. Transport in plants and human physiology repay drawing and labelling over re-reading.

Chemistry (Cambridge IGCSE 0620)

Core and Extended

Moles and stoichiometry hold the widest mark spread at Extended, followed by organic reaction pathways. Units and significant figures are assessed alongside the arithmetic. Qualitative analysis tables are recall and are free marks for a student who drills them.

Physics (Cambridge IGCSE 0625)

Core and Extended

Electricity and magnetism produce the widest spread. Circuit questions fail when a series-parallel diagram cannot be read quickly under pressure. Calculations lose marks to missing units as often as to method, which is a cheap fix once identified.

Combined and Coordinated Science

IGCSE

A single or double award covering all three sciences in less depth, with its own paper structure rather than a reduced version of the separate papers. Revision material written for the separate sciences overshoots, which wastes hours on content outside the syllabus.

Mathematics (Cambridge IGCSE 0580)

Core and Extended

Extended Paper 2 and Paper 4 reward written method, and the commonest loss at the top of the cohort is a correct answer with no visible working. Setting out working in labelled lines is a habit worth four to six sessions and real marks.

Additional Mathematics (Cambridge IGCSE 0606)

A separate qualification

Covers calculus, trigonometric identities and series beyond the main syllabus, and functions as preparation for A Level Mathematics. It is a separate grade and a separate paper load, and it is usually a poor choice for a student who is not already secure on Extended algebra.

English Language (IGCSE 0500 and 0990)

First Language

The summary task is marked on selection, not on fluency, so a student who writes well and selects badly plateaus. Directed writing rewards register, audience and form before content. Both are identifiable from one marked paper.

English Literature

IGCSE and A Level

Marks follow close reading and frequent writing, which makes this a subject where a short block on essay structure helps and a long weekly arrangement rarely does. Quotation used as evidence rather than decoration is the measurable difference.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

For students moving to an IB Diploma sixth form elsewhere in Dubai. Higher Level assumes algebraic manipulation is automatic so calculus and proof have room, and Paper 3 is an extended investigation marked on written reasoning rather than on speed.

Arabic as an Additional Language

KHDA mandatory stream

Required in every Dubai private school whatever the licensed curriculum. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ, so the stream must be confirmed before any plan is written.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes, chosen by which component is failing. All are one-to-one live video with a named tutor in Gulf Standard Time; none involves travel to a UAE address.

Single-component block

Four to six sessions aimed at one named paper: the extended-response paper, the alternative-to-practical paper, or the summary task. The narrowest and most effective purchase available, and the one that requires a marked script to identify.

  • Opens with that component sat under timed conditions
  • Marked against the published scheme for the correct syllabus code
  • Works only on that paper's demands, not on the whole subject
  • Closes on a fresh version of the same component

Options and award-route advice block

Two or three sessions before the Year 9 options decision or before an Additional Mathematics entry, using timed papers at the level under consideration to produce evidence rather than an opinion.

  • A paper at the level being considered, marked honestly
  • A written summary of what the evidence shows
  • No recommendation dressed as a prediction
  • Taken before entries, since the decision is hard to reverse

Weekly one-to-one across a term

For a genuine content gap rather than a technique problem. One subject, one hour, same slot, working through the specification in the order the gap requires rather than the order the textbook uses.

  • Planned against the live specification, with codes named
  • Each session opens on the previous week's marked question
  • Pauses during the school's own mock weeks
  • Reviewed at six weeks against a fresh paper

Triple award, combined or coordinated: what the science route decides

The science decision taken at the end of Year 9 is one of the most consequential on a British-curriculum timetable and one of the least discussed with parents. Separate sciences produce three distinct IGCSE grades, one each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with three full syllabuses and three sets of papers. Combined or coordinated award routes cover all three disciplines in less depth and produce fewer grades, with their own paper structure rather than a shortened version of the separate papers.

That last point matters practically and is routinely missed. A student on a combined award who revises from separate-science material is studying content outside their syllabus, which wastes hours and produces anxiety about topics that will never be examined. Equally, a student on separate sciences using combined-award resources is under-prepared on depth. The first question any tutor should ask about a science plan is which award route, and the second is which syllabus code.

The route also has a sixth-form consequence. Separate sciences are the conventional preparation for science A Levels and for IB Higher Level science courses, and some sixth forms expect them for entry to those subjects. A combined award does not close every door, but it narrows the conversation, and a family should ask the school directly what its own sixth form and its typical destinations require before the options form is signed.

Where tutoring contributes is evidence rather than persuasion. A timed paper from the separate-science syllabus, marked honestly against the published scheme, tells a family whether a student is collecting marks at that depth. If they are, the case for separate sciences makes itself. If they are not, the family is choosing on information rather than on the general feeling that the harder route is better.

02

What each science component tests, and where the marks go

Within a science subject the components are not three versions of the same examination. A multiple-choice or short-answer paper tests breadth of recall under time pressure. A structured or extended-response paper tests the ability to build an argument across several marks and to show reasoning. The alternative-to-practical paper tests experimental method in writing: identifying variables, describing how a reading was taken, naming sources of error and explaining how a result could be made more reliable.

A student can be strong on one and weak on another, which is why a subject-level grade hides the diagnosis. The commonest pattern in a strong Dubai cohort is solid recall with weak extended response, because the student knows the content and has never been taught to construct a six-mark answer. The second commonest is a weak practical-method paper, because it is the component that feels least like the subject and is therefore least revised.

The practical-method paper is the most tutorable component in school science, and it is almost entirely neglected. Its marks go to a specific written vocabulary that can be learned in four sessions: control variables described rather than named, uncertainty discussed rather than mentioned, improvements that address the actual source of error rather than generic suggestions about repeating the experiment. Because the assessment is written rather than laboratory-based in most centres, online delivery costs nothing on this component.

Exact weightings belong to the live specification for the student's syllabus year, and that is where they should be read, because specifications are revised. The shape, however, is stable enough to plan from: the extended-response paper usually carries the largest single share, and the practical-method paper carries enough that neglecting it entirely costs a grade boundary on its own.

The mathematics options above the standard syllabus

In a strong cohort there is usually a route above the main mathematics syllabus, and families are often unsure what it is for. Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics, syllabus 0606, is a separate qualification covering calculus, trigonometric identities, series and functions beyond the Extended syllabus, and it exists largely as preparation for A Level Mathematics. It produces its own grade and its own paper load.

It is the right choice for a specific student: one who is already secure on Extended algebra, finds the main syllabus comfortable, and intends to take mathematics further. It is the wrong choice for a student who is working hard to hold a grade 7 on the main syllabus, because the additional course assumes the algebra underneath is automatic and will expose any weakness there while consuming hours the main grade needs.

The decision is often made on the wrong signal. A student with a strong current grade in a well-taught set may be scoring on familiar question types rather than on transferable fluency, and those two profiles look identical on a report. The distinguishing evidence is performance on unfamiliar algebraic manipulation under time pressure, which a timed paper shows and a grade does not.

There is a related consideration for students heading to an IB Diploma sixth form elsewhere in Dubai rather than staying for A Levels. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level assumes algebraic manipulation is automatic so that calculus and proof have room, which is the same underlying requirement Additional Mathematics develops. A student who found the additional course manageable is generally well placed for that route; one who struggled with it should take the signal seriously.

Where the marks actually go in English and the humanities

  • The IGCSE summary task is marked on selection, not on expression
  • Directed writing rewards register, audience and form before content
  • In the humanities, buy technique and leave recall to the student's revision
  • English Literature repays a short structure block and rarely a two-year slot

In English Language the single most useful fact is that the summary task is marked on selection rather than on expression. A student who writes elegantly and selects the wrong points plateaus around a middle grade and cannot understand why, because every piece of feedback they receive praises their writing. The fix is mechanical: identify the required content points first, then write. It takes two or three sessions and lifts a component that otherwise resists effort.

Directed writing rewards register, audience and form before content. A letter that reads like an essay loses marks that have nothing to do with the quality of the argument. This is highly teachable and routinely untaught, because it feels like a formality rather than a skill. Composition, by contrast, improves mostly through volume of reading and writing, which is work the student has to do and not something an hourly rate can substitute for.

In the humanities the split is between recall and technique. Case-study content and chronology are the student's own revision work. Source handling, data response and the structure of an evaluative answer are teachable and carry their own marks. Most families buy the reverse, paying an hourly rate for content coverage that a textbook delivers adequately and leaving the technique untaught.

English Literature deserves a blunt note. Essay quality follows from close reading of the set texts and from writing often with feedback, and an hour of weekly discussion does not substitute for either. A short block on essay structure and on using quotation as evidence rather than decoration is worth having before mocks. A two-year weekly arrangement generally is not, and saying so costs bookings.

05

Boards, codes and why the specification is the only authority

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel both offer International GCSEs in the same subjects, with different codes, different paper structures and different tiering vocabulary. Cambridge Mathematics is 0580 with Core and Extended tiers; Pearson's equivalent is 4MA1 with Foundation and Higher. Cambridge Physics is 0625, Chemistry 0620, Biology 0610, Computer Science 0478, English First Language 0500 or 0990. Those codes are what identify the specification a student is actually being examined against.

A revision guide bought for the wrong board teaches content in a structure that will not appear, and past papers from the wrong board train the wrong instincts. This is the commonest unforced error in Dubai household revision and it is prevented by one email to the exams officer asking for the board, the syllabus codes and the tiers. The reply is also what lets a parent read the official specification themselves rather than relying on any tutoring site.

On weightings specifically: this page gives the shape of each assessment and declines to publish precise percentages, because specifications are revised and a stale number on a page a family plans around is worse than none. The live document on the board's own site, for the student's syllabus year, is the only authority. The same applies to past papers and mark schemes, which should be read at source rather than received as a folder from a tutor; reproducing board material is a copyright matter and unreleased material is a malpractice exposure.

One administrative point sits alongside. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. The zone comes from the exams officer in writing, not from a search result.

The examination calendar counted backwards

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. The February and March series is offered to India only, so a Dubai candidate sits June or November, and any page quoting a March window to a UAE parent is giving them a date they cannot act on.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November. Verifiable past dates: the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. For a future series, read the live official timetable on the board's own site rather than any restated date, because provisional timetables are revised.

Counted backwards, the decisions that matter sit far earlier than families expect. Tier and award-route decisions are taken on internal evidence around two terms before the papers. Final entry deadlines sit months ahead. That means the evidence informing them has to be generated earlier still, which is why a timed paper in Year 10 is worth more than three in the spring of Year 11.

For a student heading into an IB Diploma sixth form, UAE schools sit the May session. No IB examination or results date appears on this page, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and an unverified date on a page a family plans around is worse than silence. Confirm each one with the receiving school's Diploma coordinator.

Equivalency, the regulator and claims to distrust

  • The MoE counts five accredited IGCSE subjects at grade E or 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education
  • Separate sciences produce three counted grades; a combined award produces fewer
  • KHDA inspects schools; it does not endorse tutoring providers
  • Examiner status must be evidenced and never implies access to marking or boundaries

For a student applying to a UAE university, the Ministry of Education's published British-track requirement is passes in five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic Education are not counted among the five. One page currently ranking in this market states six, which the Ministry's own clarification does not support.

That has a bearing on the subject and award decisions above. A student taking separate sciences produces three of the five counted subjects in one discipline area, which is comfortable; a combined award produces fewer grades and the arithmetic should be checked rather than assumed. Equivalency is a Ministry process in any case: no tutoring provider performs it, guarantees it or accelerates it, and tutoring is not a requirement for it.

Dubai private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which inspects annually across six bands from Outstanding to Very Weak. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall under ADEK, Sharjah under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah under its Department of Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah under the federal Ministry of Education. Alongside any licensed curriculum, KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies, with separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs and combined classes strictly prohibited.

Two claims should be distrusted on sight. One is regulator approval: a tutoring operation with premises in Dubai requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit issued to training institutes, and IB Gram holds none, operates no UAE centre and describes no tutor as KHDA-approved. The other is examiner status used to imply access to marking, boundaries or paper content, which no provider should assert and no parent should pay a premium for without evidence.

08

What a tutor may do with coursework and what they may not

  • Teaching, criterion explanation and examiner-style questioning are legitimate
  • Supplied text, chosen questions or provided data are malpractice exposure
  • Board material is linked at source, never redistributed as downloads
  • The test: could the feedback be shown to the head of department?

Most IGCSE subjects are now assessed by terminal papers, but coursework and controlled assessment survive in some subjects and in the IB Diploma, and the boundary matters in both. At least one provider competing for these searches sells completed Internal Assessments. The fee is real and the mechanism is a risk transfer: the academic-honesty finding, if it comes, attaches to the student's record while the seller keeps the money.

A tutor may teach the subject content an assessment rests on, explain what each published criterion rewards, assign an honest indicative score to a draft and quote the descriptor that justifies it, help narrow a research question until it is answerable within the word limit, confirm a method is viable, read the student's own draft and ask the questions an examiner would ask, and teach referencing conventions properly.

A tutor may not write, rewrite, restructure or supply text for submission, choose the research question, provide data the student did not collect, or edit a draft until the sentences stop being the student's. Nor should a tutor distribute syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads. Those are cited and linked at source.

A useful test for a parent is whether the feedback could be handed to the student's head of department without anybody being uncomfortable. Annotated criterion feedback passes it easily. A returned draft with new paragraphs in it does not. Ask a prospective tutor where their line sits before the first session, and treat an accommodating answer as the answer.

09

Getting the right specialist, and what happens when there is not one

  • Ask whether the tutor teaches this subject at this level every week
  • Ask what they took from the marked script before agreeing a plan
  • Scarce components are named rather than covered by a generalist
  • The free trial is one session with the actual specialist, no card required

A component-level plan needs a component-level specialist, and the supply is narrower than the demand. The scarcest combinations are predictable: Additional Mathematics 0606, A Level Further Mathematics, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches Higher Level Paper 3, Computer Science pseudocode to the specification style, and a less commonly taught language. No provider in this market publishes a coverage limit, which is worth noticing when every enquiry receives an immediate yes.

The question that most reliably sorts a specialist from a generalist is whether they teach that subject at that level every week, followed by what they made of the marked script you sent. A generalist can answer the first question vaguely and cannot answer the second at all. Four sessions spent reading the specification is several hundred dirhams of no teaching and is the commonest way tutoring money disappears.

Here a family is told the realistic timescale and the alternatives rather than being matched to whoever is free. Where a UAE-based specialist is unavailable, the tutor may be based elsewhere and working to Gulf Standard Time, and that is disclosed before booking rather than left to be inferred from a contact number. For an online lesson it makes no practical difference, but it should be said.

The free trial is one session, free with no card required, with the specialist who would actually teach. It exists so a mismatch costs an hour rather than a term. If the fit is wrong, say so and a different specialist is proposed; if nobody suitable exists for the component, that is said plainly. Lessons are one-to-one online in Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram offers no home visits anywhere in the UAE.

Where we tutor

Al Safa, Jumeirah and the coastal communities

Jumeirah College sits in the Al Safa area, drawing from the established coastal villa communities. School runs are short here by Dubai standards, which makes earlier session times possible than almost anywhere in the city.

Al Safa 1 and 2

The school's own area, low-rise villas with very short journeys. A 4.15pm session is realistic, which is early enough that a student is still alert and the evening stays intact.

Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3

Established villa streets with the city's densest concentration of British and IB provision. Families compare subject options across nearby schools constantly, which makes the options conversation a live one.

Umm Suqeim

Older villa plots near the coast. Students here often carry heavy sporting commitments, so a protected weekly slot matters more than session length and weekend blocks are common.

Al Wasl and Al Manara

A quiet residential belt between Al Wasl Road and Sheikh Zayed Road with easy access to the school and few resident tutors, so the online pool is the practical route to a specialist.

Al Quoz 1 and 3

Mixed residential and light industrial, close by but with almost no local tuition supply. Scarce components such as Additional Mathematics have essentially no in-home option here.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Apartment towers with growing school-age numbers. The afternoon drive out is slow, so families here hold later slots and value a schedule that can move at short notice.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Safa, Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the board, the codes and the award route

One email to the exams officer asking for the board, the syllabus codes, the tiers and whether the sciences are separate or combined. Those four facts determine which specification a tutor should be planning against and which past papers are the right ones, and getting them wrong wastes a term of household revision.

  2. 02

Sit the specific component, not a general paper

If the suspicion is extended response, sit that paper. If it is the written practical-method component, sit that one. Marked against the published scheme for the correct code, it shows whether the suspicion was right. A general assessment averages across components and hides the thing you are looking for.

  3. 03

Read the diagnosis against the weightings

A written diagnosis naming the component, the topics and the command words, read alongside the component weightings in the live specification. Ten marks recoverable in a heavily weighted paper is worth more than twenty in a lightly weighted one, and that comparison is what sets the priority.

Take the free trial with the component specialist

One free session, no card required, with the person who would actually teach. Ask what they made of the marked component and listen for specifics: a command word, a mark-scheme point, a named topic. Encouragement without a mark-scheme reference is the signal to keep looking.

    Re-sit the component and compare

At the close of the block, the same component again, unseen, under the same conditions. Either the marks moved on that paper or they did not. Comparing a specific component before and after is far more informative than comparing subject grades, which move for many reasons.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Plans named by paper, not by subject

A plan that says Paper 4 extended response and names the topics is checkable against the specification and against the marked script. A plan that says it will cover the syllabus cannot be checked at all, which is why the first kind takes longer to write and is worth more.

Award routes treated as a real decision

Whether a student sits separate sciences or a combined award changes the grades produced, the revision load and the sixth-form conversation. It is decided at the end of Year 9 and is hard to reverse, and it deserves a timed paper as evidence rather than a general preference for the harder route.

The practical-method paper taken seriously

The written alternative-to-practical component is the most tutorable part of school science and the least revised, because it feels least like the subject. Its marks go to a specific vocabulary that can be learned in four sessions, and neglecting it entirely can cost a grade boundary.

Weightings read from the live specification

This page gives the shape of each assessment and declines to publish exact percentages, because specifications are revised and a stale figure is worse than none. The board's own document for the student's syllabus year is the only authority, and a family can read it themselves.

Honest about where tutoring helps least

English Literature and content recall repay a long weekly arrangement poorly, because the work that moves those grades is reading, writing and memorising the student must do. Naming that costs bookings and is the reason the rest of the advice on this page can be trusted.

Delivery and coverage stated plainly

One-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. Where a UAE-based specialist is unavailable the tutor's location is disclosed, and there is no UAE office or centre.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Should a Jumeirah College student take separate sciences or a combined award?+

Decide on evidence rather than on a general preference for the harder route. Separate sciences produce three distinct IGCSE grades with three full syllabuses and are the conventional preparation for science A Levels and IB Higher Level courses. A combined or coordinated award covers all three disciplines in less depth with its own paper structure and frees an option slot. Sit a timed separate-science paper, marked honestly against the published scheme, and see whether the student is collecting marks at that depth. Also ask the school directly what its sixth form expects, before the options form is signed.

Can revision material for separate sciences be used for a combined award?+

No, and this is one of the commonest wasted-effort errors in Dubai households. A combined or coordinated award has its own syllabus and its own paper structure; it is not a shortened version of the separate-science papers. A student revising from separate-science material is studying content that will not be examined and generating anxiety about topics outside their course. Confirm the award route and the syllabus code with the exams officer, then buy resources that match that code exactly. The same applies in reverse: combined-award material under-prepares a separate-science candidate on depth.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper and how is it tutored?+

In most Dubai centres the science practical component is assessed by a written paper rather than a laboratory examination. It is marked on experimental method: identifying independent and controlled variables, describing how a reading was taken, naming sources of error, and explaining how a result could be made more reliable. The marks go to a specific written vocabulary, which is learnable in about four sessions and is almost always the least revised component in the subject. Because it is a written assessment, online delivery costs nothing here. Confirm with the school which component your child is entered for.

Is Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics worth taking?+

For the right student, yes. Syllabus 0606 covers calculus, trigonometric identities, series and functions beyond the Extended syllabus and serves as preparation for A Level Mathematics, producing its own grade and its own paper load. It suits a student already secure on Extended algebra who finds the main syllabus comfortable and intends to continue with mathematics. It is a poor choice for a student working hard to hold a strong grade on the main syllabus, because it assumes the underlying algebra is automatic and will consume hours that grade needs.

How do I tell whether my child is ready for Additional Mathematics?+

Not from the current grade, which in a well-taught set can reflect scoring on familiar question types rather than transferable fluency. The distinguishing evidence is performance on unfamiliar algebraic manipulation under time pressure, which a timed paper shows and a report does not. A student who handles rearrangement, fractional and negative indices and multi-step substitution without slowing down is ready. One who understands each step but works slowly through it will find the additional course consumes the time the main syllabus needs. Two timed papers settle the question cheaply.

Why does my child write good answers and still lose marks in English Language?+

Most often because the summary task is marked on selection rather than on expression. A student who writes elegantly and identifies the wrong content points plateaus around a middle grade while receiving feedback that praises their writing, which is both accurate and unhelpful. The fix is mechanical and takes two or three sessions: identify the required content points first, then write. Directed writing has a parallel issue, where marks go to register, audience and form before content, so a letter that reads like an essay loses marks unrelated to the quality of its argument.

Which component usually holds the lost marks in a strong cohort?+

The extended-response paper, followed by the written practical-method component. In a strong Dubai cohort the pattern is consistent: recall is solid because the content has been well taught and revised, and the losses concentrate where a student has to construct a multi-mark argument or write about experimental method. Both are skills rather than knowledge, which is why they resist more revision and respond quickly to targeted work. Identifying which of the two is the problem needs the marked script rather than the subject grade, since the grade averages across the components.

Why will you not publish exact paper weightings on this page?+

Because specifications are revised and a stale percentage on a page a family plans around is worse than no figure at all. What is stable enough to plan from is the shape: the extended-response paper usually carries the largest single share, and the written practical-method component carries enough that ignoring it can cost a grade boundary. The authoritative numbers live in the live specification on the board's own site for the exact syllabus year your child is entered for, and a parent can read that document directly once they have the code from the exams officer.

How do I find out which board and syllabus codes my child sits?+

Ask the exams officer and request the codes rather than the board name alone. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel both offer International GCSEs in the same subjects with different paper structures and different tier vocabulary, so a revision guide bought for the wrong board teaches content in a form that will not appear. The reply should give you something like 0580 for Cambridge Mathematics or 4MA1 for Pearson. While you are asking, request the tiers, the science award route and the centre's Cambridge administrative zone, since all four affect planning.

Does a strong school cohort mean tutoring is unnecessary?+

Not necessarily, but it does change what tutoring should be for. In a strong cohort the content is usually well taught and the losses are concentrated in a component nobody has examined: the extended-response paper, the written practical method, the summary task's selection. A general revision plan is close to the worst response, because it spreads hours across material the student already holds. The right purchase is narrow, identified from a marked script, and often only four to six sessions. A standing weekly slot booked out of caution is the expensive alternative.

What changes between IGCSE and A Level in the same subject?+

The expectation that a student links topics without being prompted, and in the essay subjects the shift from an organised answer to an argued one. IGCSE questions tend to announce which topic they are testing; A Level questions frequently do not, and a student who scored well by recognising question types finds that skill stops working. The efficient response is a short diagnostic block early in Year 12 aimed at that specific gap, rather than a standing weekly slot covering content the school is already teaching well.

Do tutors visit homes in Al Safa or Umm Suqeim?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Lessons for Dubai families are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. For a component-level plan this is an advantage: the tutor is chosen for the specific paper rather than for proximity to Al Safa at five o'clock, which matters most for the scarcest components such as Additional Mathematics 0606 or specification-style pseudocode. There is also no UAE office or centre to attend.

How many IGCSE grades does UAE equivalency actually require?+

Five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the count, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. One page currently ranking in this market states six, which the Ministry's own clarification does not support. This bears on the science award decision, since separate sciences produce three counted grades and a combined award produces fewer. Verify with the Ministry before planning entries around it.

What should we have in hand after the first paid hour?+

A document rather than a lesson: the specific component sat under timed conditions, marked against the published scheme for the correct syllabus code, and a written diagnosis naming the topics and command words costing marks. Read alongside the component weightings in the live specification, that tells you where an hour is worth spending, because ten recoverable marks on a heavily weighted paper outrank twenty on a lightly weighted one. A first session that produces only a pleasant impression of the subject has told you nothing a plan can be built on.

Name the paper before planning the term

For a family at Jumeirah College, the useful first step is narrow: get the board, the syllabus codes and the science award route from the exams officer, then have the student sit the specific component you suspect under timed conditions and have it marked against the published scheme. Read the diagnosis against the component weightings in the live specification, because recoverable marks in a heavily weighted paper are worth more than the same number elsewhere. From there a four to six session block on that one component is usually enough. Book the free trial with the specialist who teaches it; lessons run one-to-one online in Gulf Standard Time.
