IB IGCSE Tutor for Dubai English Speaking College Students in Dubai

An IB IGCSE tutor for Dubai English Speaking College students in Dubai is usually wanted for one reason: a science tier decision that has gone quiet. Core or Extended in Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610 decides a grade ceiling two years before the paper is sat. This page maps the papers, the weightings and the marks that leak at each tier. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Every subject worked from its Cambridge specification code and tier
  • Paper-by-paper weightings, not vague talk of difficulty
  • One-to-one live video delivery; no visits to UAE addresses

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Tier is the decision; everything else is detail

Parents at a British-curriculum school in Dubai often arrive at tutoring through a side door. Nobody says 'my child needs Extended-tier Physics support.' They say the grades have slipped, or the science reports have gone from encouraging to careful. Underneath that, nine times out of ten, sits a tiering question: is this pupil being entered for Core or Extended in each science, and does the entry match what the pupil can actually do under timing?

The question matters because tier is a ceiling, not a difficulty setting. A Cambridge IGCSE science entered at Core tier cannot reach the top grades however well the papers are answered. Entered at Extended tier, the full range is available, and the papers contain questions a Core candidate never sees. The decision therefore sets the maximum outcome of two years' work, and it is usually made by a department in Year 10 on the evidence of internal assessments. If that evidence is unrepresentative, the ceiling is set wrongly and nobody notices until results.

The second thing worth understanding is where the marks actually sit. In the Cambridge IGCSE sciences the theory paper is the heavy component, typically half the grade, with the multiple-choice paper at around thirty per cent and the practical or alternative-to-practical component at around twenty. Always check the current syllabus for your child's entry, because Cambridge revises specifications and the live document is the only authority. But the shape tells you something immediately: a pupil losing marks on the twenty-per-cent practical paper and the fifty-per-cent theory paper has two different problems, and they are fixed by two different kinds of session.

This page therefore works subject by subject and paper by paper. It sets out what Core and Extended differ on in Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610, where each one leaks marks, what the Alternative to Practical paper really assesses, how the Cambridge route compares with the Pearson Edexcel equivalents, and which Cambridge command terms decide an answer's mark. It also counts the tier decision backwards from the June series, because a tier change has a deadline and a family that discovers the question in April has discovered it too late.

Delivery is stated once and plainly: tuition for Dubai families is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai, and home visits are a service offered only in India. For a science tier problem that turns out to be an advantage rather than a compromise, because the work is reading a pupil's own marked script together on screen, annotating it, and re-answering the question properly. That is a shared-screen task rather than a kitchen-table one, and it is why the format suits this particular problem so well in practice.

At a glance

  • Core tier caps the grade; Extended tier opens the full range and sets harder questions
  • Cambridge IGCSE sciences typically weight theory at 50%, multiple choice at 30%, practical at 20%
  • The Alternative to Practical paper tests method writing and data handling, not laboratory dexterity
  • Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1 are different papers with different structures
  • Command terms decide mark allocation more often than content knowledge does
  • UAE centres sit the June and November series; the February/March series is India-only
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages matter for a tiering decision, and the useful work in each one is different. Below is what each stage assesses and what a session should be doing at that point.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 science

The three years in which tier allocation is effectively decided. Year 9 internal assessments in physics, chemistry and biology inform the set a pupil is placed into, and a set placement in Year 9 frequently becomes a tier entry in Year 11. The content is not demanding; the habits of showing working and answering the question asked are what carry forward.

Dubai schools stream science from Year 9 in many cases, and a pupil who moves schools within the emirate mid-Key Stage 3 can arrive in a set chosen on another school's evidence. Reconciling that is a short, defined piece of work, and doing it in Year 9 costs a fraction of what recovering a grade ceiling costs in Year 11.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

Two years, a terminal series, and a tier entry per subject. Cambridge offers Core and Extended tiers in the sciences and in mathematics; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A runs Foundation and Higher. The practical or alternative-to-practical component is examined, not coursework-assessed, which changes how it can be prepared for.

UAE candidates sit June and November. The June series is the main entry for a Dubai Year 11; November is the resit route and works perfectly well for a single science. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, and your child's school knows which zone its timetable comes from.

A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

International A Level sciences

Sixth-form science departments publish IGCSE entry grades, and they apply them. An Extended-tier grade 6 in Chemistry 0620 where a department wants a 7 closes A Level Chemistry, which in turn closes several degree routes. The tier decision made in Year 10 is therefore an admissions decision with a two-year fuse.

Dubai sixth forms are competitive and publish subject-specific thresholds. Checking those thresholds while your child is in Year 10 turns the tier question into a concrete one: which sciences need Extended entry to keep a sixth-form door open, and what would it take to get there.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below is given with its Cambridge specification code, the tiers available, and the component where marks most reliably leak. The code matters: Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1 Physics are not the same examination.

Physics (Cambridge IGCSE 0625)

Core and Extended

Theory paper at around half the grade, multiple choice at around thirty per cent, practical component at twenty. Extended-tier marks leak hardest in extended-response explanation questions and in anything requiring a rearranged equation with units carried through correctly.

Chemistry (Cambridge IGCSE 0620)

Core and Extended

Moles and organic chemistry decide the Extended-tier grade. A pupil who has not secured mole calculations by the end of Year 10 carries the deficit into every later topic, because titration, yield and electrolysis questions all assume them.

Biology (Cambridge IGCSE 0610)

Core and Extended

High content volume, low conceptual difficulty, which makes it the most self-remediable of the three. Marks go to imprecise terminology and to command-term mismatches far more often than to misunderstanding.

Combined Science (Cambridge IGCSE 0653)

Core and Extended

One grade covering all three sciences, with reduced content from each. A sensible entry for a pupil whose strengths are elsewhere, and a constraint on A Level science options, so it is worth checking sixth-form entry rules before the choice is locked.

Mathematics (Cambridge IGCSE 0580)

Core and Extended

Non-calculator and calculator papers at each tier. Method marks lost in non-calculator working are the commonest avoidable loss, and they respond to a short block of timed practice rather than to re-teaching content.

Physics (Pearson Edexcel 4PH1)

Single tier

Two written papers with no tiering, so the Core and Extended question does not arise. Pupils transferring between Dubai schools sometimes change board mid-course, and reconciling the two specifications is a defined piece of work rather than a vague worry.

English Language (Cambridge 0500 and 0990)

IGCSE and IGCSE 9-1

Reading response and directed writing. The gap is almost always structure under timing rather than vocabulary, and three or four marked scripts with specific rewrite tasks move more than a term of discussion.

Geography (Cambridge IGCSE 0460)

IGCSE

Case-study recall plus skills questions on maps, graphs and photographs. The skills paper is trainable quickly; the case studies are the pupil's own revision work and a tutor's job is to test them, not to supply them.

Computer Science (Cambridge IGCSE 0478)

IGCSE

Algorithm tracing and Cambridge pseudocode conventions decide the paper. Pupils who program confidently in Python often lose marks because the examination wants pseudocode written the Cambridge way.

Arabic as an Additional Language

IGCSE and school-stream

Sits alongside the Arabic provision every Dubai private school must deliver under KHDA's mandatory-subject requirements, regardless of the licensed curriculum. Script accuracy and reading fluency are the measurable targets.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, chosen by what the pupil's marked script says rather than by what feels reassuring. A tiering problem and a technique problem need different arrangements.

A tier diagnostic, two or three sessions

The pupil sits Extended-tier questions from the relevant Cambridge paper under timing, and the script is marked against the real mark scheme. The output is a judgement: the pupil can access Extended-tier questions, or cannot yet, or can with a named topic repaired. That judgement is what the school conversation needs.

  • Extended-tier theory questions attempted under examination timing
  • Marks broken down by content, method, command term and timing
  • A written note you can take to the head of science
  • No term commitment attached

Weekly one-to-one in one science

One hour a week on the science that is costing the most marks, pegged to the school's own scheme of work rather than to a syllabus order. The session is built round a piece of the pupil's own written work, which is marked between sessions and re-answered in the next one.

  • Session content set by the next school assessment
  • One piece of the pupil's own work marked each week
  • Extended-response questions rewritten, not just discussed
  • Pause without penalty during school holidays and study leave

A paper-skills block before the series

Short, concentrated work on one component rather than one subject: the Alternative to Practical paper across all three sciences, or non-calculator method marks in Maths 0580. A component block often moves more marks than a subject block, because the same skill is being paid for three times at once.

  • Six to ten sessions on a single examined component
  • Full past papers under timing, marked and returned with rewrite tasks
  • Scheduled round the school's mock and study-leave calendar
  • Shifted to post-Iftar slots when revision falls inside Ramadan

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What Core and Extended actually change on a Cambridge science paper

Core and Extended are not easy and hard versions of the same examination. They are different question papers with different grade ranges, and a pupil sits one or the other. The Core route gives access to the lower part of the grade scale; the Extended route gives access to the whole of it. Once the entry is made, the ceiling is fixed regardless of how well the pupil performs.

The paper structure follows the same logic. In the Cambridge IGCSE sciences, a Core candidate sits the Core multiple-choice paper and the Core theory paper. An Extended candidate sits the Extended versions of both, which contain questions requiring the supplement content and longer written explanation. Both routes sit the same practical or alternative-to-practical component. Always confirm the arrangement on the live syllabus for your child's series, because Cambridge revises specifications and a tutoring page is not the authority on an exam entry.

Where this bites is in the middle of the ability range. A pupil who is comfortable with Core content and shaky on the supplement sits in a genuinely difficult position: Extended entry risks a weaker grade than a strong Core performance, and Core entry closes the top of the scale and often a sixth-form door with it. That decision deserves evidence rather than instinct, and the evidence is a marked Extended-tier script sat under timing. Everything else is an opinion about a child.

One further point parents rarely hear. A department proposing Core entry is usually doing so protectively, on the evidence it has, and it is not wrong to do that. The evidence it has, though, is internal assessment written under classroom conditions, which is not the same instrument as a timed Extended-tier paper. Producing the second instrument costs one or two sessions and gives everyone a better conversation, whichever way it resolves.

Physics 0625: the paper map and where the marks actually go

Physics is the science where understanding and marks diverge most. A pupil can explain to you at the dinner table exactly why a transformer works and still score four out of seven on the question about it, because the mark scheme wants particular physics stated in a particular order with the quantities named. That is a writing problem wearing a physics costume, and it is the single most common thing an Extended-tier Physics tutor is actually paid to fix.

The second recurring loss is equation handling. Extended-tier questions routinely require a formula to be rearranged, a value substituted in non-standard units, and an answer given to a sensible precision with the unit attached. Each of those is a separate opportunity to drop a mark, and a pupil who loses one mark per calculation across a theory paper has lost a grade without getting anything conceptually wrong. Practising this is dull and it works, which is why it tends not to happen without someone insisting.

The third is the practical component. Around a fifth of the grade sits in a paper that asks the candidate to describe a method, identify variables, read instruments, plot and interpret data, and suggest improvements. None of that is about laboratory dexterity, which is why it can be prepared for perfectly well over live video with a shared script on screen. The table below maps the components and names the loss pattern for each.

Reading the table alongside a real script is what makes it useful. Take the pupil's last marked Physics paper, put each lost mark into one of the rows, and the correct purchase becomes obvious rather than arguable. A script with marks scattered across explanation questions needs rewriting practice. A script with marks lost only in the final section needs timed practice. The two look identical on a report and cost very different amounts to fix.

Chemistry 0620: moles and organic decide the Extended grade

  • Test moles with three calculations before buying a term of general chemistry support
  • A pupil who writes the balanced equation first has secured the topic
  • Organic chemistry rewards patterns, not memorised examples
  • Both topics are cheaper to repair in Year 10 than in the term before the series

Chemistry has a load-bearing topic, and it is the mole. Once a pupil can convert confidently between mass, moles and concentration, a long list of later questions becomes routine: titration calculations, reacting masses, percentage yield, electrolysis quantities. Until they can, every one of those topics has to be guessed at, and the guesses are indistinguishable from a conceptual problem on a report.

The diagnostic is quick. Give the pupil three calculations from an Extended-tier paper and watch what happens in the first thirty seconds. A pupil who starts by writing a balanced equation and identifying what they have been given has secured it. A pupil who starts multiplying numbers has not, and the fix is a short block of work rather than a term of general chemistry support. This is one of the few places where tutoring has a genuinely defined end point.

Organic chemistry is the other. It rewards systematic learning of functional groups, reaction types and naming conventions, and it punishes pupils who have learned examples instead of patterns. The useful session here is not more content delivery; it is making the pupil produce the reaction they have not been shown, from the pattern they have. Both topics, worked properly in Year 10, remove most of the Extended-tier risk in Year 11 and reduce the final-term spend substantially.

Everything else in Chemistry 0620 is more forgiving than its reputation suggests. Bonding, rates of reaction, acids and bases and the periodic table all reward ordinary revision, and a pupil who has moles and organic secured can usually handle them without paid help. Which is why the correct chemistry purchase is narrow and short rather than broad and long: two named topics, a defined number of sessions, and a test at the end that either passes or does not. A chemistry arrangement that runs for four terms without a stated end point has stopped being a repair and become a subscription.

04

Biology 0610: volume is not the same as difficulty

Biology is the science families most often over-buy. It has the largest content load of the three and the lowest conceptual difficulty, which means a diligent pupil can usually close a biology gap with a revision guide and a schedule. Paying specialist rates for content delivery in biology is one of the commonest ways a tutoring budget is wasted.

What does need another person is precision. Biology mark schemes are unforgiving about terminology: diffusion is not osmosis, a stimulus is not a response, and an answer that says 'the plant grows better' where the mark scheme wants 'the rate of photosynthesis increases' scores nothing despite being broadly right. A pupil cannot usually see this in their own writing, which is exactly what marking is for.

The second thing worth paying for is the command-term discipline shared across all three sciences. 'State' wants a fact and nothing else. 'Describe' wants what happens without explanation. 'Explain' wants a reason, usually with a 'because'. 'Compare' wants both sides in the same sentence. A pupil who writes an explanation for a 'describe' question has written more and scored less, and once that pattern is named it tends to stop within a few weeks. That makes biology the subject where the fewest paid hours produce the most visible movement.

There is one exception worth naming. Biology at Extended tier includes a handful of genuinely demanding areas - genetics problems, the detail of transport in plants, and the quantitative parts of ecology - where a pupil can be diligent and still stuck. Those are legitimate topic purchases of three or four sessions each. The test is whether the pupil can explain the idea back without the book open; if they can, the remaining gap is terminology and timing, and that is marking work rather than teaching work.

05

The Alternative to Practical paper, and what can be done about it online

Families assume the practical component is the one thing online tuition cannot touch. The opposite is true. The examined paper does not test whether a pupil can set up apparatus; it tests whether they can describe a method precisely, identify independent, dependent and control variables, read a scale to the right precision, tabulate and plot data, draw a line of best fit, interpret it, and suggest a specific improvement. Every one of those is a written skill assessed on paper.

That makes it ideal shared-screen work. A past-paper question is opened on screen, the pupil writes their method, and the tutor marks it live against the mark scheme, showing which clause earned a mark and which was too vague to earn one. 'Measure the temperature' earns nothing; 'measure the temperature of the water every thirty seconds with a thermometer reading to 0.5 degrees Celsius' earns the mark. A pupil typically needs that shown four or five times before it becomes automatic.

Because the component is common to both tiers and all three sciences, a block of work on it is the best-value purchase in the whole science programme. Six to eight sessions on practical paper technique raises marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology simultaneously, which no amount of single-subject content work can do. The table sets out which skills are examined and how each is trained without a laboratory.

There is one thing the format genuinely cannot replace, and it should be said rather than glossed over. A pupil who has never handled a burette or watched a thermometer settle has a weaker intuition for what a method feels like, and that intuition helps. School laboratory time supplies it, and the tutoring job is to convert that experience into mark-scheme language rather than to substitute for it. Where a school has run a practical, the best session that week is the one that turns it into a written method under timing.

Cambridge against Pearson Edexcel for the same science

Pupils move between Dubai schools, and the schools do not all use the same board. A pupil who has done a year of Cambridge 0625 Physics and transfers to a school entering Pearson 4PH1 has not lost their physics, but they have changed examination. The paper structures differ, the tiering position differs, and revision built round one board's past papers is partly misdirected.

The most consequential difference is tiering. Cambridge offers Core and Extended routes in the sciences; the Pearson International GCSE sciences are single-tier, which removes the ceiling question entirely and raises a different one about whether the pupil can access the whole paper. In mathematics the position reverses in presentation: Cambridge 0580 runs Core and Extended, Pearson 4MA1 runs Foundation and Higher, and the calculator rules are not the same across the two.

The practical answer for a transferring pupil is a short reconciliation exercise rather than a general tutoring arrangement. Establish which board and code the pupil is actually entered for, obtain the right past papers from the official board site, and work through the specification differences topic by topic. That is usually three or four sessions of defined work, and it prevents a term of revision aimed at the wrong examination.

Two practical cautions follow. First, do not trust a subject name alone: a school's prospectus may say 'IGCSE Physics' without naming the board, and the entry form is the only reliable source. Ask the examinations officer for the code. Second, do not buy past papers or specification files from anyone; Cambridge and Pearson publish them on their own sites, and a provider handing over copyrighted material has told you something about how they handle rules generally. Both boards also publish provisional timetables ahead of each series, so the live official document is always the one to work from.

Where a pupil has genuinely studied both boards, there is a small upside nobody mentions. They have seen two question styles on the same physics, and that tends to make the underlying content more robust rather than less. The work is narrowing the practice to the board they will actually sit, not unlearning the other one.

The tier decision, counted backwards from the June series

A tier change has a deadline, and it sits a long way before the paper. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. The February/March series is offered in India only, so a Dubai family planning round it is planning for a different country. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the centre's zone, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after the wrong zone timetable was used. Ask your child's school which zone it sits in, and work from the live official timetable rather than from any date restated elsewhere. As a guide to how far ahead the machinery runs, the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE November 2026 timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, with results reaching students in January; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, and June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026.

Read backwards from the paper, the tier sequence is unforgiving. The evidence that justifies a tier change has to exist before the entry closes, which means the diagnostic needs to happen in the autumn term of Year 11 at the very latest, and ideally in Year 10. By the spring term the entry is made and the only remaining question is how to maximise the grade within the tier already chosen.

What a tutor may and may not do with science written work

  • Marking the pupil's own answer against the mark scheme: legitimate and the core of the work
  • Supplying a method, paragraph or write-up the pupil submits: never, at any price
  • Handing over syllabus, past-paper or mark-scheme files: no; the official page is linked instead
  • Claiming regulator or exam-board approval: no such approval exists

The honesty line in the sciences is easier to see than in coursework-heavy subjects, and it is worth stating because one page ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright. A tutor teaches, questions, models and marks. A tutor does not produce the pupil's work, supply paragraphs, or write a method the pupil then submits as their own.

In practice that means the useful session looks like this. The pupil writes an answer. The tutor marks it against the mark scheme and says which clause earned a mark and which did not. The pupil rewrites it. The tutor marks it again. Nothing in that loop requires the tutor to write anything the pupil submits, and the pupil ends up with a skill rather than a product. Where a school practical write-up is assessed internally, the same rule applies with more force: feedback on the pupil's draft is legitimate; supplying the content is not.

The same restraint applies to material. Cambridge and Pearson own their syllabuses, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables, and the right behaviour is to link the official page rather than hand over files. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, Cambridge, Pearson or IB approval, accreditation or partnership and makes no such claim. It is an online matching platform with no premises in the UAE, and anyone describing tutors as approved by a UAE regulator is describing something that does not exist.

Worth adding, because it cuts the other way: holding this line is a service rather than a restriction. A pupil who submits work a tutor wrote has exposed their whole qualification to a malpractice finding, and the risk sits with the candidate, not the provider who took the fee. Parents are entitled to ask a prospective tutor, plainly, what they would do if asked to write a paragraph. The answer tells you more than any qualification on a profile.

09

Coverage, scheduling and the first session

Extended-tier Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics are the best-covered subjects in this set, and a match is usually quick. Minority combinations are thinner. A pupil needing Extended-tier Computer Science 0478 with Cambridge pseudocode conventions, Arabic as a first language, or a specific Pearson science code mid-transfer may wait longer, and in a given week the honest answer may be that nobody suitable is free.

Three outcomes are possible and a family should be told which applies. The subject is covered and a trial lesson is scheduled within a few days. The subject is covered by a specialist working into Gulf Standard Time from outside the UAE, which is disclosed rather than concealed behind a local-looking telephone number. Or the subject is not currently covered at the tier required, in which case saying so is better than placing a generalist and invoicing for the gap.

Scheduling is the practical constraint for a Dubai family rather than geography. Pupils in Silicon Oasis are home by four; pupils in Mudon or Nad Al Sheba are not home until well after five. A slot fifteen minutes after your child actually walks in survives the term; a slot fifteen minutes after the bell does not. The first session is free, is one session, and requires no card details, which exists so a tiering judgement can be tested before anything is spent.

Two more scheduling notes specific to a Dubai school year. Revision for the June series runs through the spring term, which in some years overlaps Ramadan; moving sessions to a post-Iftar slot keeps the most valuable quarter of the two-year course intact, where pausing for six weeks does not. And the summer gap is long. A pupil going into Year 11 with a known topic gap is better served by four sessions in August than by twelve in February, because the content is still available to be fixed rather than merely revised.

Where we tutor

The communities a DESC-area science pupil commutes from

Pupils at a school on the Academic City side of Dubai come from a wide arc of eastern and central communities. These notes are about when a science session can realistically start on a school night, which is the only logistical fact that changes a tutoring plan.

Mirdif

A short hop at midday and a slow one at four in the afternoon. Families here typically settle on a 5pm start, which works for a one-hour online session followed by homework rather than instead of it.

Al Warqa

Villa communities with large household sizes, so a science session often competes with two other children's schedules. A fixed weekly slot that nobody negotiates each week is what keeps a tiering plan alive.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Newer villa developments with a long run across to the Academic City corridor. Pupils here are home late enough that 6pm sessions are routine, and no travelling tutor is involved to make that awkward.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Dense, apartment-heavy and close to Academic City, so pupils are often home within twenty minutes. The practical consequence is that a 4.30pm start is genuinely feasible here, which suits a pupil who fades after seven.

The Villa and Mudon

Dubailand communities with a thirty-five-minute drive each way at the wrong hour. The published in-home band of AED 180-500 reflects journeys like this one; removing the car removes most of the premium.

Mirdif Hills and Al Khawaneej

Spread out, with school-run congestion concentrated on a few arterials. Weekend morning sessions are popular here for timed paper practice, which needs a quiet ninety minutes rather than an hour squeezed before dinner.

International City and Warsan

A tighter education budget on average, which is where the AED 45-150 budget online band finds its market. At Extended tier in the sciences, the gap between a budget tutor and a specialist shows up in the extended-response marks.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

The Academic City and Mirdif corridor

British-curriculum secondary schools running IGCSE at 16 before splitting into A Level or the IB Diploma. Pupils move between them, which is how a pupil ends up on a Pearson specification in one school and a Cambridge one in the next.

  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Uptown International School
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • GEMS Royal Dubai School
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Dubai Scholars Private School

The Nad Al Sheba, Meydan and Dubailand belt

A newer set of schools whose secondary phases are still filling, so an Extended-tier science set can be small. A pupil at a minority tier sometimes has no classmate working at the same level, which is precisely when one-to-one work earns its cost.

  • Kings' School Nad Al Sheba
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Hartland International School
  • GEMS Metropole School
  • Dubai Heights Academy

Schools are named here as context for the communities this page serves. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any named school or school group.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Establish the code and the tier

Find out exactly which specification each science is being taught to and which tier the pupil is provisionally entered for. Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1 are different examinations, and Core and Extended are different papers. A tutor working from the wrong one is wasting your money politely and consistently.

  2. 02

Get a timed Extended-tier script marked

Have the pupil sit Extended-tier questions under examination timing and have the script marked against the real mark scheme. This is the only evidence that answers the tier question. Internal assessment grades tell you a position; a marked script tells you whether the pupil can reach the supplement content.

  3. 03

Separate the content gap from the writing gap

Sort the lost marks into content not known, method not shown, command term misread and time run out. Each has a different cost and a different fix. A pupil losing explanation marks needs rewriting practice, not re-teaching, and the two are frequently confused at the point of purchase.

  4. 04

Buy the practical component once, for all three sciences

Six to eight sessions on practical paper technique raises marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the same time, because the same skills are examined in each. It is the best-value block in the programme and it is routinely skipped in favour of single-subject content work.

  5. 05

Fix a slot that survives the commute

Choose a start time fifteen minutes after your child is actually home, not after the bell. Silicon Oasis pupils can do 4.30pm; Mudon and Nad Al Sheba pupils realistically cannot. Online delivery means the late slot costs no travel surcharge and carries no traffic cancellation risk.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Specification codes, not subject names

Matching starts from the code and tier printed on your child's exam entry: 0625 or 4PH1, Core or Extended, 0580 or 4MA1. Every session is then built from the school's own scheme of work, so the pupil is never revising content their class has not reached or has already left behind.

Marks explained, not difficulty discussed

The work is reading your child's own marked script and naming where the marks went: content, method, command term or timing. Those four categories have different costs and different fixes, and a page that only talks about subjects being hard cannot help you choose between them.

The practical paper taken seriously

Around a fifth of each Cambridge science grade sits in a component that tests written method, variables and data handling rather than laboratory skill. It is fully trainable on a shared screen and it pays across all three sciences at once, which makes it the most under-bought block in the market.

Tier evidence a school can read

A tier conversation goes better with a timed, marked Extended-tier script than with a parent's concern. The output of a diagnostic is a written note naming the topics, the mark categories and the realistic ceiling, in a form a head of science can act on.

Delivery and coverage stated plainly

Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are an India-only service. Where a minority subject or tier has no specialist free, that is disclosed rather than filled with a generalist.

No claim that cannot be evidenced

No grade promises, no satisfaction percentages, no self-asserted ratings, and no suggestion that KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB has approved, accredited or partnered with IB Gram. Board documents are linked at source rather than reproduced.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What do Core and Extended tier actually mean for a Dubai English Speaking College science pupil?+

They are two different question papers with two different grade ranges, not an easy and a hard version of one examination. A Core entry gives access to the lower part of the grade scale and cannot reach the top grades however well the pupil performs. An Extended entry opens the whole scale and includes supplement content and longer written explanation questions. Both routes sit the same practical or alternative-to-practical component. The entry is usually proposed by the science department during Year 10, which makes Year 10 the point at which a marginal case is worth evidencing properly.

Can a pupil move from Core to Extended tier partway through Year 11?+

Sometimes, and the deadline is earlier than most families expect. The entry is made by the centre months before the paper is sat, so any evidence that justifies a change has to exist before that point. In practice the useful window is the autumn term of Year 11 at the latest. What persuades a department is not a parent's concern but a timed Extended-tier script marked against the real mark scheme, showing the pupil reaching supplement content. Ask the school directly what evidence it wants and when its internal deadline falls.

Which of the three Cambridge sciences leaks the most marks at Extended tier?+

Physics, by a clear margin, and usually for a writing reason rather than a physics one. Extended-tier theory papers ask for explanation in a particular order with quantities named, and a pupil who can explain a transformer out loud can still score four out of seven for it. Equation handling is the second loss: rearranging, substituting in non-standard units, and giving a sensible precision with the unit attached are three separate chances to drop a mark. Both are trainable by rewriting the pupil's own answers against the mark scheme rather than by more content teaching.

How is the Alternative to Practical paper marked, and can it be practised over video?+

It is marked on written precision, not laboratory skill. The paper asks the candidate to describe a method with quantities, instruments and intervals stated, identify independent, dependent and control variables, read scales to the correct precision, tabulate and plot data, interpret a trend, and suggest a specific improvement. All of that is written work on paper, which makes it ideal shared-screen practice: the pupil writes, the tutor marks it live against the mark scheme, and the pupil rewrites. 'Measure the temperature' earns nothing; the version with a thermometer, a precision and an interval earns the mark.

My child understands circuits but cannot write a six-mark explanation. Is that fixable?+

Yes, and relatively quickly, because it is a writing problem rather than a physics one. The mark scheme for an extended-response question allocates a mark per idea, in a sequence, with the relevant quantities named. A pupil who writes a fluent paragraph that mentions four of the six ideas scores four. The fix is mechanical: the pupil writes the answer, the tutor marks it clause by clause showing which earned a mark, the pupil rewrites it, and the loop repeats. Most pupils internalise the shape after four or five questions handled that way.

What changes if my child transfers from Cambridge 0625 Physics to Pearson 4PH1?+

The physics travels with them; the examination does not. The Cambridge IGCSE sciences run Core and Extended tiers, while the Pearson International GCSE sciences are single-tier, so the ceiling question disappears and a different one appears about accessing the whole paper. Paper structures and question styles differ, and revision built round the wrong board's past papers is partly misdirected. The sensible response is a short reconciliation exercise of three or four sessions: confirm the code on the entry, get the right official past papers, and work the specification differences topic by topic.

How much of Chemistry 0620 actually depends on getting moles right?+

More than any other single topic. Once mole calculations are secure, titrations, reacting masses, percentage yield and electrolysis quantities all become routine; until they are, every one of those has to be guessed at, and on a report that looks like a general chemistry weakness. The diagnostic takes two minutes: give three Extended-tier calculations and watch the first thirty seconds. A pupil who writes the balanced equation first has secured it. A pupil who starts multiplying numbers has not, and the fix is a short defined block rather than a term of broad support.

Does Biology 0610 need fewer paid hours than Physics or Chemistry?+

Usually, yes, and families routinely over-buy it. Biology has the largest content load of the three sciences and the lowest conceptual difficulty, so a diligent pupil can often close a content gap with a revision guide and a schedule rather than with a specialist. What does need another reader is terminology precision: diffusion is not osmosis, and 'the plant grows better' scores nothing where the mark scheme wants 'the rate of photosynthesis increases'. Pupils cannot see that in their own writing, which is what marking is for, and it moves quickly once named.

What do the Cambridge command terms state, describe and explain each require?+

They are instructions about how much to write, and ignoring them costs marks while writing more. 'State' wants a fact and nothing else, so an added reason earns nothing and uses time. 'Describe' wants what happens, with no causal account. 'Explain' wants a reason, usually signalled by 'because'. 'Compare' wants both sides addressed in the same answer rather than two separate paragraphs. 'Suggest' invites applying known science to an unfamiliar context. A pupil who writes explanations for describe questions is working harder for fewer marks, and naming the pattern usually stops it within weeks.

Can a tutor help with a school science practical write-up?+

A tutor can give feedback on the pupil's own draft and teach the skills the write-up needs. A tutor cannot write it, supply paragraphs for it, or edit it to completion, and no price makes that acceptable. Where a write-up contributes to an internally assessed mark, the rule tightens rather than loosens, because the mark has to represent the pupil's own work. The legitimate loop is simple: the pupil writes, the tutor marks against the criteria and names what is missing, the pupil rewrites. One page in this market sells finished coursework outright, which is a malpractice risk rather than a service.

When is the latest useful point to start science tutoring before the June series?+

For technique work, eight to twelve weeks before the paper is still a genuinely productive window, because timed practice with marking and re-answering moves marks right up to study leave. For a content gap spanning a third of the specification, that window is too late and the honest advice is to protect the subjects that can still move. For a tier question it is far too late, because the entry closed months earlier. The ordering matters: tier decisions belong in Year 10, content repair in the autumn of Year 11, technique in the final quarter.

Does the November series work as a resit route for a single science?+

Yes, and it is a normal plan rather than a failure plan. Cambridge runs IGCSE examinations in a June series and a November series, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. The February/March series is offered in India only and is irrelevant to a UAE candidate. As a guide to the timing, the Pearson November 2026 timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026 with results reaching students in January; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Entries go through the centre, so start with your child's examinations officer.

Do you send tutors to Academic City, Mirdif or Al Warqa addresses?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family's address is a service offered only in India. Tutoring for Dubai families is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. For a science tier problem that is an advantage rather than a compromise: the work is reading a marked script together on screen, annotating it and re-answering the question, which is shared-screen work. It also means the tutor is chosen for the specification and tier rather than for living within driving distance of your community.

How many sessions does a single science topic gap usually take?+

It depends which of four things is wrong, and the diagnostic is worth doing before buying a term. A timing gap, where the content is known and the paper is not finished, typically closes in four or five sessions of timed practice. A technique gap, where marks are lost to command terms or missing method, takes six to ten. A genuine topic gap, such as moles never secured, takes about a term. A foundation gap, where the pupil cannot access the tier at all, is a school conversation about entry before anyone is paid anything.

Start with the code, the tier and one marked script

Find out which specification code and which tier each science is entered at, then have your child sit Extended-tier questions under timing and get the script marked against the real mark scheme. That single piece of evidence answers the tier question, tells you whether the problem is content or writing, and gives the head of science something to act on. A free trial lesson is one session with no card details required, so the judgement can be tested before anything is spent. Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and any subject or tier not currently covered will be named rather than filled with a generalist.
