IB DP Psychology Home Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Psychology home tutor in Dubai is usually hired after a mock essay comes back with a mark nobody can explain. Psychology is marked against named criteria, so that is answerable: the 22-mark essay has five of them, the short-answer questions have their own markbands, and the experimental report has four. IB Gram teaches the Diploma course one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and every session returns a scored artefact you can read.

  • Essays returned scored against each criterion, not with a single mark
  • Named-study recall tested in writing, not assumed
  • Experimental report feedback that stays inside IB ethics requirements

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Psychology marks are not mysterious. They are allocated by criterion, in writing

The usual trigger for a Psychology enquiry in Dubai is a returned essay with a number on it and no explanation. A student who feels they wrote well receives a 12 out of 22 and cannot see the gap. Parents reasonably conclude that the subject is subjective and that the grade depends on the marker. It does not. The 22-mark essay is scored against five named criteria with published mark allocations, and a tutor who returns a score for each one can show exactly where the twelve came from.

That is the whole method of this page. Psychology is the Diploma subject where a parent can most easily see the evidence, because every component publishes what it rewards. The Paper 1 Section B essay divides its 22 marks across focus on the question, knowledge and understanding, use of research to support the answer, critical thinking, and clarity and organisation. The short-answer questions are marked in bands out of nine. The experimental report is marked across four criteria totalling 22. Confirm the current criteria and mark allocations in the subject guide your child's cohort sits, on ibo.org or through the school.

Once the marks are visible as a set of criteria rather than as a single number, the diagnosis is usually quick and often surprising. A student scoring 12 out of 22 commonly has full or near-full marks for knowledge and understanding, reasonable marks for use of research, and almost nothing for critical thinking. They do not need to learn more psychology. They need to learn to write the paragraph that critical thinking rewards, which is a different and shorter piece of work than another term of content revision.

The second thing a parent can see is named-study recall, and this is where Dubai students most often quietly fail. The subject requires studies to be used in support of an argument, with enough detail to be credible — the researcher, the method, the finding, the limitation. Students who revise by reading notes feel prepared and produce vague references under timed conditions. The test for this is written and immediate: name the study, state the method, state the finding, state one limitation, in two minutes. Weekly, the result of that test is a document a parent can read.

On delivery: tutoring for Dubai families is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; sending a tutor to a residence is part of our India service only. For Psychology the practical consequence is that essays and reports move as scored documents that accumulate across the two years, rather than as paper handed back and lost, which is precisely what makes the evidence approach possible.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Psychology is new to almost every student who takes it, since few school systems teach it before 16. Where a student came from still shapes the first month, mostly through their habits of writing and of handling evidence.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Psychology is a group 3 subject at Standard or Higher Level. All candidates study three core approaches to behaviour — biological, cognitive and sociocultural — and at least one option such as abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, health psychology or the psychology of human relationships. Higher Level adds extensions within each approach, a second option and approaches to research. All candidates complete an experimental report.

Psychology is a popular group 3 choice at Dubai IB schools and is often taught in large classes, which affects how much individual essay feedback a student receives. A teacher marking thirty 22-mark essays cannot return five criterion scores on each, which is the specific gap a tutor fills in this subject rather than a content gap.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

There is no MYP psychology, so the feeders are Individuals and Societies and Sciences. The useful inheritance is criterion-based marking: MYP students are used to being assessed against descriptors and respond well to being shown a mark allocation. The gap is scientific method, since the experimental report requires a hypothesis, an inferential statistical test and a properly handled sample.

Dubai schools running MYP to the end of Year 11 send students into DP1 Psychology with good extended-writing habits and no experience of designing or analysing an experiment. The first report draft usually reads as an essay about a study rather than as a report of one, and that is a structural correction rather than a knowledge problem.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Psychology sits well in the Career-related Programme alongside career studies in health, education or social care. The DP course is assessed identically to the full Diploma version. The workload consideration is that the reflective project and the experimental report both demand independent written work with citations, and schools usually place their deadlines in the same term.

Where a Dubai school offers CP with a health or social-care pathway, students sometimes propose a report topic that overlaps their career study. Each component must be independently produced, so an overlap in subject matter needs the school's explicit guidance before any data is collected.

IGCSE Psychology or arriving new to the subject

Cambridge IGCSE Psychology 0266 exists and gives a genuine head start on research methods and on a handful of classic studies. Most students arrive without it. Those coming from IGCSE Biology or Sociology bring useful habits; those arriving purely from humanities subjects write fluently and under-use evidence, which is the exact behaviour the use-of-research criterion penalises.

With UK-curriculum students at 37% of Dubai private-school enrolment in 2024-25, most Psychology students here arrive from an IGCSE programme that did not include the subject. The predictable consequence is a strong first essay on knowledge and a weak one on research support, and it shows in the criterion scores long before it shows in the grade.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Psychology is the subject of this page. The remaining entries are what Dubai Diploma students most often take with it, described by the specific habit each one adds or undermines.

Psychology

HL and SL

Three core approaches to behaviour, plus option content and an experimental report. Higher Level adds extensions within each approach, an additional option and approaches to research. Assessment includes short-answer questions marked out of nine, a 22-mark essay scored across five criteria, option questions, and the report marked across four criteria. Confirm the current structure in your cohort's subject guide.

Biology

HL and SL

The closest science partner, overlapping the biological approach through neurotransmission, hormones, genetics and brain structure. Biology also trains the handling of data and controls that the experimental report needs. The clash is workload, since both subjects require an independently produced investigation in the same academic year.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Directly useful, because the experimental report requires descriptive statistics and an inferential test. A student comfortable with significance, measures of central tendency and dispersion handles the analysis criterion without extra support, which is a real saving in session terms.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Chosen for university prerequisites rather than for Psychology support. Several psychology degrees require a mathematics qualification and some specify a route, so the named programme's own requirement should be checked before DP1 selection closes rather than inferred.

Biology-adjacent: Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

Overlaps health psychology and the biological approach through physiology, stress and behaviour change. Its own internal investigation shares a method with the Psychology report, which means students doing both often produce a cleaner design but must keep the two pieces of work entirely separate.

Economics

HL and SL

The behavioural material in Economics gives a genuine conceptual overlap around rationality and decision-making. The transferable skill is evaluation under a command term. What does not transfer is structure: an Economics 15-mark answer and a Psychology 22-mark essay reward different paragraph shapes.

Global Politics

HL and SL

Shares the sociocultural ground — identity, conformity, group behaviour — from a different direction, and its engagement activity trains the sourcing and defending of evidence on a self-chosen issue. That habit maps closely onto the use-of-research criterion in Psychology essays.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Helps and occasionally hurts. It trains close reading and clear paragraphing, which supports clarity and organisation. The risk is literary habit: a Psychology essay rewards a stated claim supported by a named study, not an elegantly developed argument that arrives at its evidence late.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

A common group choice for students wanting a science without a heavy quantitative load. Shares with Psychology the demand for evaluation of methodology, and students doing both get repeated practice at criticising a study design, which is the hardest part of the critical thinking criterion.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies

MoE-mandated alongside the Diploma

Dubai private schools must deliver Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies regardless of the licensed international curriculum, under KHDA requirements. These take real timetable space, which is why a Psychology plan is built from the week a student actually has rather than an ideal one.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Dubai families use Psychology support, each generating a different scored artefact. All run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; none involves attendance at a UAE address.

Weekly essay-marking cycle

The format that fits this subject best. The student writes one 22-mark essay between sessions; the tutor returns it with a score against each of the five criteria and written reasons; the live hour is spent on whichever criterion was weakest. Over a term this produces a table of criterion scores that shows precisely which part of the writing is improving and which is not.

  • One timed essay per week, written under realistic conditions
  • Five criterion scores returned in writing, not a single mark
  • The session targets the weakest criterion rather than covering content again
  • A running table of criterion scores across the term

Named-study evidence drills

Short, repeated, written tests of study recall: researcher, method, finding, limitation, in two minutes. Most Dubai Psychology students feel prepared because they have read their notes and then produce vague references under timed conditions. The drill exposes that immediately and fixes it faster than re-teaching the content does.

  • Studies tested in writing, against the clock, not discussed verbally
  • Each approach and option covered to a stated minimum
  • A list of the student's own unreliable studies, updated weekly
  • Recall linked to the argument each study is meant to support

Experimental report supervision

Criterion-level feedback on the student's own report. The tutor checks that the chosen published study can be meaningfully replicated at school scale, tests the hypothesis and design against the ethics requirements, reviews the statistical choice, and scores each draft against the four criteria. The tutor does not write, rewrite or complete any part of the report.

  • Study choice and design tested before any data is collected
  • Ethics requirements checked explicitly, including consent and participant age
  • Statistical test and descriptive statistics reviewed for appropriateness
  • Each draft scored against the criteria, with feedback given as questions

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What this search means, and the four documents that locate a Psychology grade

  • A criterion-scored essay gives five numbers instead of one
  • A timed short-answer attempt tests production, not knowledge
  • A written study-recall test exposes vague evidence immediately
  • A scored report draft locates the loss inside the coursework

An IB DP Psychology home tutor in Dubai, in the market's own use of the phrase, is a specialist working one-to-one with a Diploma Psychology student at a time the family chooses. The conventional version is a tutor who travels to a residence. IB Gram teaches the same course one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; home visits are part of our India service only and are not sold anywhere in the UAE.

What the family searching that phrase almost always wants is an explanation. A mark came back on an essay and nobody can account for it, or a predicted grade sits a band below what the student and their parents expected. Psychology is unusually well suited to answering that, because the subject publishes its criteria and allocations. The number is reconstructable.

Four documents locate a Psychology grade, and between them they cover almost every case. The first is a criterion-scored essay: five scores rather than one mark, which shows whether the loss is in knowledge, in use of research, in critical thinking or in focus. The second is a timed short-answer attempt, which shows whether the student can produce a usable answer in the time the paper allows. The third is a written study-recall test, which shows whether the evidence base is real or remembered vaguely. The fourth is a report draft scored against its four criteria.

A parent who has those four documents knows what to do next without knowing any psychology. Full marks for knowledge and nothing for critical thinking is one intervention. Good critical thinking with vague study references is a different one. A fluent essay that never addresses the question asked is a third. The sections below set out what each component rewards, so that the four documents can be read against something.

02

The 22-mark essay, criterion by criterion

This is the single most important thing for a Psychology parent to understand, and it takes one table. The Paper 1 Section B essay is worth 22 marks and those marks are distributed across five named criteria. They are not weighted equally, and the two that students most often neglect are among the largest.

Knowledge and understanding is where able students are usually strong, and it is also where additional revision has the least marginal effect. Use of research to support the answer rewards named studies deployed in support of a claim, with enough detail to be credible — the researcher, the method, the finding. Critical thinking is the criterion that separates a mid-band essay from a strong one, and it is almost always where a 12 out of 22 lost its marks. Focus on the question and clarity and organisation carry fewer marks each and are the cheapest to secure.

What critical thinking rewards specifically is judgement about the psychology: methodological criticism of the studies used, consideration of alternative explanations, discussion of whether findings generalise across cultures or populations, and attention to the limits of what the evidence supports. It is not a concluding paragraph that says the topic is complex. A student who adds one properly reasoned methodological criticism per study typically gains several marks without writing any more content.

The practical method follows directly. One essay a week, written under timed conditions, returned with five criterion scores and written reasons. The next session targets the lowest-scoring criterion rather than reviewing the topic again. Within four weeks a parent can see which criterion is moving. Confirm the current criteria and allocations in the subject guide your cohort sits, since rubric details are revised between syllabus versions.

03

The nine-mark questions, and why timing beats knowledge

  • Short-answer questions are marked in bands out of nine, not as mini-essays
  • Outline, describe and explain ask for different lengths and shapes
  • The Section B essay carries more marks than the three short answers combined
  • A fixed minute allocation per question is worth marks by itself
  • Record the time taken on every timed attempt, not only the mark

The short-answer questions on Paper 1 Section A are worth nine marks each and are marked in bands rather than by itemised criteria — confirm the current markbands in your cohort's guide. In practice they reward a precise, complete, appropriately short answer that does the one thing the command term asked. They are not miniature essays, and treating them as such is the commonest way to lose both marks and time.

The errors are consistent. A student asked to outline writes an explanation, spending eight minutes to earn what a four-minute answer would have earned. A student asked to describe one study gives two, neither in sufficient detail. A student asked to explain a concept names a study and forgets to explain the concept. Each of these is a reading failure under pressure rather than a knowledge failure, and each is fixable with timed practice and a marked return.

Timing is the hidden constraint. Paper 1 contains three short-answer questions and an essay, and the essay carries more marks than the three short answers combined. A student who overspends in Section A arrives at the essay with insufficient time, which costs more marks than the overspending gained. A plain allocation — a fixed number of minutes per short answer, the rest to the essay — is worth several marks on its own and takes one session to install.

The useful artefact here is a timed attempt with the clock recorded. Not an essay written at leisure, but three short answers under the real allocation, marked and returned with the time taken noted against each. Four of those across a month tell a parent whether the production problem is being solved, and they are a different document from a school mock result because they isolate one behaviour.

04

The named-study problem, and how to evidence it

Psychology rewards evidence, and the use-of-research criterion is explicit about it. A claim supported by a study the student can name, describe and evaluate earns marks; the same claim supported by a vague reference to research having shown something does not. This is the single most testable thing in the subject and the thing students most reliably over-estimate about themselves.

The reason is the revision method. Reading notes produces recognition, not recall. A student rereading a page about a study feels familiar with it and concludes they know it, then under timed conditions produces the researcher's name and nothing usable about the method. The gap between recognition and recall is invisible until it is tested in writing against a clock, which is why it survives to the mock paper.

The drill is simple and unpleasant, which is why few students do it unprompted: name the study, state the method in one sentence, state the finding in one sentence, state one methodological limitation. Two minutes, written, no notes. Any study that cannot survive that is not available to the student in an examination, whatever their sense of it. The output is a list of unreliable studies that shrinks week by week, and that list is the second document in the evidence file.

How many studies are needed is a question with no single answer, and anyone giving a confident number is guessing. What is defensible is a working minimum per approach and per option topic, built so that every likely essay question can be supported by at least two studies the student can produce reliably. The table below sets out how to structure that coverage and how to test it, rather than prescribing a count.

STRUCTURING AND TESTING NAMED-STUDY COVERAGE

05

The experimental report: four criteria, 22 marks, and a word limit

The internal assessment in Psychology is an experimental investigation: the student replicates a simple published study, collects data, analyses it with descriptive statistics and an inferential test, and reports it within a word limit of 2,200 words. It is marked across four criteria — introduction, exploration, analysis and evaluation — totalling 22 marks. Confirm the current criteria, allocations and word limit in your cohort's subject guide before planning anything around them.

The design decision made in the first week determines most of the eventual mark, and it is made with the least information. A study chosen because it sounds interesting but cannot be replicated at school scale produces a report that struggles across every criterion: the introduction cannot justify the replication properly, the exploration cannot describe a defensible design, the analysis has too little usable data, and the evaluation becomes a list of everything that went wrong. Testing the choice against practicality before any data collection is the highest-value hour in the whole component.

The analysis criterion is where mathematics meets psychology and where Dubai students most often need help that their Psychology teacher has limited time to give. It requires appropriate descriptive statistics, a justified inferential test, correct application of it, and a statement of what the result means for the hypothesis. Choosing the wrong test, or choosing the right test and then misstating what significance means, costs marks that have nothing to do with psychological understanding.

The evaluation criterion rewards honesty with structure. A report whose results contradict the original study can score full marks on evaluation if the discussion of why is methodologically sound. Students frequently believe a failed replication is a failed report and write defensively, which costs more than the result ever did. The table below sets out the criteria with the first-draft pattern we see most often in this market.

PSYCHOLOGY EXPERIMENTAL REPORT — CRITERIA AND THE FIRST-DRAFT PATTERN (VERIFY CURRENT CRITERIA AND THE 2,200-WORD LIMIT IN YOUR COHORT'S SUBJECT GUIDE)

06

Ethics in the report: what a Dubai student can and cannot run

  • Read the ethics requirements before choosing a study, not afterwards
  • Consent, right to withdraw, protection from harm, debriefing and age limits all apply
  • Follow the school's own ethics approval process exactly and in writing
  • A culturally diverse Dubai sample is a genuine point for the evaluation criterion
  • Collect only the data the study needs, and keep it anonymised

Psychology is the only Diploma subject whose internal assessment involves human participants, which gives it a set of constraints no other subject has. Studies must meet the ethical requirements set out for the course: informed consent, the right to withdraw, protection from harm or undue stress, appropriate debriefing, and restrictions on participant age and on deception. Read the current requirements in your cohort's subject guide and follow the school's own ethics approval process exactly — they are not optional, and a study that breaches them cannot be submitted.

This bites in practice far more than students expect. A replication that was straightforward in the original published form may be unusable at school scale because it induced stress, used deception, or involved participants outside the permitted age range. Students who design first and read the ethics rules afterwards lose weeks. The sequence that works is the reverse: read the requirements, then choose a study that can be replicated inside them.

There is a Dubai-specific dimension too. A school-based sample drawn from an international student body is culturally diverse in a way the original study's sample almost certainly was not, which is a genuine strength of these reports if it is discussed rather than ignored. The evaluation criterion rewards exactly that kind of methodological observation, and a Dubai student has a real point to make about the generalisability of a finding across a sample drawn from many nationalities.

A note on data protection, because it applies here. A report involving participants collects personal information about young people, and the UAE's Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection sits behind how such data is handled. The practical standard is to collect only what the study needs, keep it anonymised, store it securely, and follow whatever the school's own process requires. It is also a useful thing to write about in the exploration section, where handling of data is part of what the criterion rewards.

07

Critical thinking: the criterion that moves a 4 to a 6

  • Criticise the method of each study you use, specifically
  • Offer an alternative explanation and say what would distinguish them
  • Question generalisation across populations and cultures
  • State the limit of what the evidence supports
  • Where studies disagree, say which is better evidence and why

If a Dubai Psychology student is stuck in the middle bands, the odds are strongly that this criterion is why, and it is worth its own section because it is the one most often misunderstood as a personality trait rather than a technique. Critical thinking in a Psychology essay is a set of specific moves, each of which can be taught and practised, and none of which requires being a naturally sceptical person.

The moves are these. Criticise the method of a study you have just used — sample size, sampling method, artificiality of the task, cultural specificity of the sample, researcher effects, measurement validity. Offer an alternative explanation for a finding and say what would distinguish between them. Question whether a finding generalises to a different population or culture. State the limit of what the evidence supports, as opposed to what the theory claims. And where two studies disagree, say which is better evidence and why.

Each of those is a sentence pattern a student can learn. The reason they appear so rarely in first drafts is that students have been taught that an essay should be fluent and consistent, and criticism feels like undermining their own argument. The opposite is true in this subject: the band descriptors reward exactly that undermining, provided it is reasoned. A student who adds one methodological criticism per study typically gains marks immediately, and the gain shows up on the criterion score rather than being lost inside a single total.

The way to evidence improvement is to track the criterion in isolation. A table of critical-thinking scores across six weekly essays is a far better instrument than a sequence of overall marks, because the overall mark moves slowly while a single criterion can move quickly. It is also the clearest thing a parent can look at, and the quickest way to tell whether a tutoring arrangement is working or merely pleasant.

08

The evidence file: what a parent should be able to read after four weeks

This section is the practical test to apply to any Psychology tutoring arrangement in Dubai, including ours. Four weeks in, there should be documents. Not a sense that things are going better, not a report that the student seems more confident, but a small folder a parent can read in fifteen minutes and draw a conclusion from.

What should be in it is specific. Four criterion-scored essays, each with five numbers rather than one mark. At least two timed short-answer attempts with the minutes recorded. A study-recall list showing which studies the student can produce reliably and which they cannot, updated weekly so the trend is visible. And, if the report is under way, a scored draft of at least one section against its criterion.

What that folder lets a parent see is which criterion is moving. If critical-thinking scores have gone from 1 to 2 to 3 across four essays, the arrangement is working on the thing that matters. If all five criterion scores are flat and the only change is that the student feels better about the subject, that is worth knowing too, and worth acting on. The point of keeping records is to make a decision possible at four weeks rather than at the mock.

A parent does not need to understand the biological approach to read any of this. Five numbers per essay, four essays, one of the numbers rising. The table below sets out what each week should produce and the one question worth asking about it. We run this review with families at the four-week mark and change the plan or the tutor if the trend is flat.

09

Which option your school teaches, and why it changes revision

The option is chosen by the school, not by the student, and it determines a substantial share of what is examinable. A tutor who does not know which option a Dubai school teaches cannot plan revision for the option paper, and at Higher Level, where a second option applies, the effect doubles. This is the first factual question to ask any Psychology tutor, and the answer is testable in the trial session.

The options differ in character more than their titles suggest. Abnormal psychology is definition-heavy and demands precision about classification, diagnosis and treatment evidence. Developmental psychology is longitudinal in its logic and rewards understanding of methodological difficulty in studying change over time. Health psychology is applied, with behaviour change models and prevention. The psychology of human relationships is the most socially intuitive and therefore the one students most often answer from common sense rather than from evidence, which the use-of-research criterion punishes.

That last point is worth drawing out, because it is the characteristic failure in the option paper. An option question invites an opinion, and an opinion is exactly what earns no marks. A student writing about relationships or about health behaviour without named studies will produce something readable and mid-band at best. The same student, taught to anchor every claim in a study they can produce, moves up without learning any new concepts.

There is one more practical consequence. Because the option is selected by the department, a student has no say in whether it suits them, and some genuinely do not. A student who reasons well about method and poorly about social nuance will find abnormal or developmental psychology more rewarding than human relationships. That is not changeable, but it is plannable: knowing which option is harder for a particular student determines where the hours go.

What Psychology support costs in Dubai, by what you are buying

Published market rates in Dubai for 2026 span a wide range: budget online providers advertise from AED 33-52 at Tutopiya and AED 45-65 at EdFlik, Unitors lists IB tuition from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150, Bestimate's rate table puts IB specialists at AED 200-450 and above, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and BartyED quotes AED 650 at the premium end. In-home one-to-one sits at AED 180-350 in Bestimate's table and up to AED 500 from independent tutors. Those are market figures published by those providers, not IB Gram's prices.

For Psychology the more useful way to think about cost is by brief, because the three main briefs consume very different amounts of a tutor's time per session. Teaching content is the cheapest per hour to deliver. Marking essays to five criteria with written reasons takes substantial time outside the session itself. Supervising an experimental report, including testing a design against the ethics requirements and reviewing a statistical choice, is slower again.

This is why a single headline rate is a poor guide in this subject, and why the question to ask any provider is what the rate includes. A rate quoted for teaching will not include weekly essay marking to criterion level, and families discover that in week two. We quote a plan after a free trial lesson — a brief, a session count and what each session returns — rather than publishing an hourly figure that would mean something different for each of the three briefs.

Some context from the emirate. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package. Dubai's private sector carried 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25, with International Baccalaureate students at 7% of enrolment, and seven new private schools including three IB schools are reported for 2026-27, adding 16,846 places. More Diploma students and the same specialist pool is an argument for booking early.

Online or in the room, and the honest case for each

Psychology is a conversational subject and that genuinely favours presence in some cases. A tutor in the room reads hesitation faster, and for a student who shuts down on a video call that advantage decides the question. IB Gram does not sell that format in the UAE — a tutor travelling to a residence is part of our India operation only — so a family who concludes they need somebody present should hire locally and expect the in-home market band, which absorbs a cross-city journey.

What online delivery contributes to this subject specifically is the document trail, and in an evidence-led approach that is not a minor convenience. Essays arrive as files, come back with five criterion scores and comments, and accumulate in one place from DP1 to study leave. Study-recall lists update in a shared document. Report drafts carry version history, which matters when a school asks what feedback was received and when. None of that survives an arrangement conducted on paper at a kitchen table.

The second contribution is marking volume. The core of the evidence method is one essay a week, marked to five criteria with written reasons. That is work done between sessions, and it is easier to sustain in a format where the essay is already a file. An in-home arrangement tends to drift towards discussion in the hour and less marking outside it, which is pleasant and slower.

Scheduling matters in Dubai too. A 90-minute in-home session booked at 17:00 in Dubai Marina can occupy a tutor for nearly three hours once the journey is counted, and that time is inside the rate whether it is itemised or not. Online, the hour is teaching. The honest summary: if presence is the deciding factor, hire locally; if the deciding factor is criterion-level marking volume and a readable record, the online format is built for it.

Academic honesty, and the specific temptation in Psychology coursework

  • Inventing or adjusting data is malpractice, and the sanction falls on the student
  • A failed replication can still score full marks on evaluation
  • Permitted: teaching method, explaining criteria, reviewing statistics, scoring drafts
  • Not permitted: writing, rewriting, processing the data, or editing to completion
  • Official guides, papers and mark schemes are cited and linked, never redistributed

The experimental report carries a temptation the rest of the subject does not, because data can be invented. A student whose replication produced a messy or non-significant result may be tempted to adjust the numbers, and a student short of time may be tempted to generate a plausible dataset rather than run the study. Both are malpractice, and the sanction falls on the candidate — a Diploma can be withheld. Neither is necessary, because the evaluation criterion rewards methodological discussion of an unexpected result rather than a tidy confirmation.

That point deserves emphasis to any Dubai student panicking in DP2: a failed replication is not a failed report. A report whose findings contradict the original study can score full marks on evaluation if the discussion of why is methodologically sound. The marks are for the quality of the reasoning about the design and the data, not for the data agreeing with a published paper. Understanding that removes the entire incentive.

On the tutoring boundary: a tutor may teach research methods and statistics, explain each criterion, test whether a chosen study can be replicated inside the ethics requirements, review a statistical choice, read a draft the student wrote and score it, and ask why a section asserts something without justifying it. A tutor may not write, rewrite or complete any part of the report, supply text for insertion, process the student's data for them, or edit a draft to completion. Services selling finished Internal Assessments exist in this market; one was found during research for this project advertising them openly at a fixed price.

The same boundary covers the Extended Essay and TOK, and it covers materials. Published subject guides, past papers and mark schemes belong to the IB and are referenced and linked to ibo.org rather than reproduced or distributed. Our standard is that feedback is given as criterion scores and questions, and the student does every revision themselves. That is also better teaching: a student who has rewritten their own evaluation section understands the criterion, and one who received a corrected version does not.

Where we tutor

Psychology students across Dubai, and the practical scheduling picture

Psychology cohorts are large in Dubai, so the subject is available almost everywhere. What varies by area is when a session can realistically start and what kind of block a family can sustain.

Al Barsha and Dubai Hills Estate

The largest Psychology cohorts in the city, taught in classes big enough that individual essay feedback is scarce. A 16:30 start is realistic here, which makes a weekly essay-marking cycle easy to sustain through DP1.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lakes Towers

Long northbound commutes push sessions to 18:30 or later. Families here usually prefer essay work set as homework and marked between sessions, so the live hour is spent on the criterion that was weakest.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Later evening slots are the norm, with parents working in the same district. Weekend mornings are used for the experimental report, which needs an uninterrupted block for design and analysis rather than an hour between commitments.

Arabian Ranches and Jumeirah Golf Estates

Schools inside the communities and short commutes. Students here most often start Psychology support in DP1 after a first criterion-marked essay, rather than in DP2 after mock results, which changes what is achievable.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

Served by established IB schools towards Deira, with the Rashidiya interchange shaping the afternoon. An 18:30 start is standard. Enquiries from here tend to concern the option content more than the core approaches.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Palm Jumeirah

Students travel inland to school across several curricula. Friday afternoons are commonly protected by families in this strip, which pushes Psychology sessions onto Sunday through Wednesday evenings.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Dubai Sports City

Heavy school-bus dependence and long routes. A single 90-minute slot works better than two shorter ones, and suits the rhythm of writing one essay and reviewing its criterion scores in the same session.

Nad Al Sheba, Meydan and Dubai Silicon Oasis

Newer communities feeding dual-pathway schools. Students arriving from A Level Psychology appear here most often, with solid content knowledge and no experience of the IB's criterion structure or its experimental report.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Dubai Hills Estate and Emirates Hills

The largest Psychology groups in Dubai. Class sizes mean the realistic amount of criterion-level essay feedback from school is limited, so the tutoring gap here is marking volume rather than teaching, and the evidence file fills quickly.

  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • GEMS Dubai American Academy
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai

Deira, Mirdif and Dubai Festival City

Long-standing IB provision with settled annual deadlines, so report milestones are usually issued in writing early in DP1. Option choices at these schools tend to be stable year on year, which makes planning straightforward.

  • Deira International School
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Universal American School Dubai
  • Uptown International School

Arabian Ranches, Nad Al Sheba and Dubai Sports City

Dual-pathway schools where the Diploma runs alongside A Level. Psychology classes here include students who transferred route in Year 12 and who need the criterion structure and the report brief explained from the beginning.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) Arabian Ranches
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai

Schools are named purely as context for Dubai's IB ecosystem; IB Gram holds no affiliation, partnership, client relationship or endorsement from any school, group or authority mentioned on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one marked essay and the option name

The two most useful things in a first message are a returned 22-mark essay and the name of the option your school teaches. From the essay the criterion losses can usually be identified before the first session; from the option, a revision plan is possible at all.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with a Diploma specialist

A full one-to-one session over live video, free of charge and with no card details taken. The tutor scores a real essay against the five criteria during or after the session and returns the scores in writing, with the lowest criterion named and a specific plan for it.

  3. 03

A plan that names one criterion

Not a plan to improve at Psychology. A plan that names the criterion being targeted — usually critical thinking or use of research — the number of essays, and what will be measurable in four weeks. Content revision is added only where the criterion scores show it is needed.

  4. 04

One essay a week, scored five ways

A fixed slot on Gulf Standard Time, with an essay written between sessions and returned with five criterion scores and written reasons. The live hour targets the weakest criterion. Study-recall drills run alongside, written and timed, with the unreliable list updated weekly.

  5. 05

Read the evidence file at four weeks

Four scored essays, timed attempts with minutes recorded and an updated recall list, read together. If the targeted criterion has moved, continue. If every criterion is flat, the plan changes or the tutor changes. The decision is made from documents rather than from impressions.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Five numbers, not one mark

Every essay comes back scored against each of the five criteria with written reasons, because a single mark cannot tell a parent whether the problem is knowledge, evidence, criticism or focus. The five numbers make the diagnosis obvious and make a four-week trend readable.

Study recall tested, not assumed

Written, timed, two minutes per study: researcher, method, finding, limitation. Reading notes produces recognition rather than recall, and the difference is invisible until it is tested. The output is a shrinking list of unreliable studies that a parent can read directly.

Critical thinking taught as a technique

The criterion that separates mid-band from strong is a set of specific sentence patterns, not a personality trait. We teach the moves — method criticism, alternative explanation, limits of generalisation — and track that one criterion in isolation so the gain is visible.

The report handled ethics-first

Design choices are tested against the course's ethical requirements and the school's approval process before any data is collected, because a study designed first and checked afterwards loses weeks. Statistical choice is reviewed before the analysis is written, not after.

Matched on the option your school teaches

Because delivery is online, the tutor is matched on the specific option your department selected and, at Higher Level, on both. That question is unanswerable for a tutor chosen by driving distance, and the option is a substantial share of the examinable content.

Sources named, and gaps admitted

AED bands on this page carry the provider and the year that published them. Regulatory statements cite u.ae, KHDA or MoHRE. Where nothing could be sourced — IB session dates, an IB equivalency threshold, a required number of studies — the page says so rather than inventing a figure.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Why did my child's Psychology essay get a mark we cannot explain?+

Because a single number hides the diagnosis. The Paper 1 Section B essay is worth 22 marks distributed across five named criteria: focus on the question, knowledge and understanding, use of research to support the answer, critical thinking, and clarity and organisation. A 12 out of 22 usually means near-full marks on knowledge and almost nothing on critical thinking. Ask for the essay to be scored against each criterion separately and the gap becomes obvious. Confirm the current criteria and allocations in the subject guide your child's cohort sits.

What exactly does the critical thinking criterion want?+

A set of specific moves rather than a sceptical disposition. Criticise the method of each study used — sample size, sampling method, artificiality, cultural specificity, measurement validity. Offer an alternative explanation for a finding and say what would distinguish between them. Question whether a result generalises to another population. State the limit of what the evidence supports. Where two studies disagree, say which is better evidence and why. A student who adds one reasoned methodological criticism per study typically gains marks immediately, without learning any new content.

My child knows the content but still writes mid-band essays. What should change?+

Stop revising content. If knowledge and understanding is already scoring five or six out of six, further revision has almost no marginal effect, and the marks are sitting unclaimed in critical thinking and use of research. The change is a weekly timed essay returned with five criterion scores, with the live session spent on the lowest one. Four essays produce a readable trend on each criterion, which is far more useful than four overall marks, because a single criterion can move quickly while the total moves slowly.

How can we tell whether our child really knows the named studies?+

Test it in writing against a clock. Two minutes per study, no notes: researcher, method in one sentence, finding in one sentence, one methodological limitation. Any study that does not survive that is not available in an examination, whatever the student's sense of it. Reading notes produces recognition rather than recall, and the gap is invisible until it is tested, which is why it usually survives until the mock. The output is a list of unreliable studies that should shrink week by week.

How many studies does a Psychology student need to know?+

Nobody can give a defensible single number, and anyone who does is guessing. What is defensible is a working minimum: at least two studies per major topic in each core approach and per named topic in the school's option, which the student can produce reliably under the two-minute written test, with at least one in each area that can be criticised methodologically. At Higher Level add at least one producible study per extension area, plus a short set usable purely as method examples for research-methods questions.

What is the Psychology internal assessment, and how long is it?+

It is an experimental investigation: the student replicates a simple published study, collects data, analyses it with descriptive statistics and an inferential test, and reports it within a word limit of 2,200 words. It is marked across four criteria — introduction, exploration, analysis and evaluation — totalling 22 marks. The design choice made in the first week determines most of the eventual mark, which is why testing that choice for practicality and against the ethics requirements before any data collection is the highest-value hour in the component. Verify current details in your cohort's guide.

What are the ethics rules for the Psychology experiment?+

The course sets requirements that include informed consent, the right to withdraw, protection from harm or undue stress, appropriate debriefing, and restrictions on participant age and on deception, alongside the school's own approval process. Read them in your cohort's subject guide and follow the school process exactly and in writing. The practical consequence is sequencing: a study chosen first and checked against the rules afterwards frequently turns out to be unusable, costing weeks. Choose a study that can be replicated inside the requirements from the start.

Our replication did not produce the expected result. Is the report ruined?+

No, and this is the most important thing to tell a worried DP2 student. The evaluation criterion rewards methodological discussion of the design, the findings and their limits — not agreement with the original paper. A report whose results contradict the published study can score full marks on evaluation if the discussion of why is sound. Students who write defensively about an unexpected result lose more marks than the result ever cost. Treat it as a methodological finding to analyse, and the criterion works in your favour.

Can a tutor help with the Psychology experiment without breaking the rules?+

Yes, inside a clear boundary. A tutor may teach research methods and statistics, explain each criterion, test whether a chosen study can be replicated within the ethics requirements, review whether the statistical test is appropriate, read a draft the student wrote and score it, and ask why a section asserts something without justifying it. A tutor may not write or rewrite any part of the report, supply text, process the student's data, or edit a draft to completion. Inventing or adjusting data is malpractice and the sanction falls on the candidate.

Why do the nine-mark questions cost our child so much time?+

Because they are being written as miniature essays. The short-answer questions are marked in bands out of nine and reward a precise, complete, appropriately short answer that does the single thing the command term asked. Outline, describe and explain want different lengths. A student who explains when asked to outline spends eight minutes earning what four would have earned, then reaches the Section B essay short of time — and the essay carries more marks than the three short answers combined. Install a fixed minute allocation and the loss disappears.

Which Psychology option is my child studying, and does it matter who we hire?+

It matters a great deal, and the option is chosen by the school rather than by the student. It determines a substantial share of the examinable content, and at Higher Level a second option applies. Ask the department which option or options are taught, then ask any prospective tutor which they have taught and put a question from it to them in the trial session. A tutor strong on the three core approaches but unfamiliar with your school's option is a partial fit, which is better known before paying than after.

Does a tutor need to visit our home in Dubai for Psychology lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; a tutor travelling to a residence is part of our India service only. Psychology for Dubai families is taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, which suits an evidence-led approach because essays move as files, come back with five criterion scores and accumulate in one place across two years. If your child genuinely disengages on a video call, presence matters more than any of that and you should hire a local in-home tutor.

What does Psychology tutoring cost in Dubai, and what should the rate include?+

Published 2026 market figures run from AED 33-65 an hour at the budget online end, through a qualified-tutor band where Unitors lists IB tuition from AED 200, to an IB specialist band of AED 200-450 and above in Bestimate's rate table, with premium quotes such as BartyED's AED 650. In-home sits at AED 180-350 and up to AED 500 independently. Those are market rates, not ours. The question to ask any provider is what the rate includes: marking an essay to five criteria is substantial work outside the session, and a teaching rate rarely covers it.

What should we expect to see after four weeks of Psychology tutoring?+

A folder you can read in fifteen minutes: four essays each scored against the five criteria, at least two timed short-answer attempts with the minutes recorded, and a study-recall list showing which studies are producible and which are not, updated weekly. If the targeted criterion has risen across those four essays, the arrangement is working on the thing that matters. If every criterion is flat and the only change is that your child feels better about the subject, that is worth knowing and worth acting on.

Can Psychology sessions work around Dubai school timings and Ramadan?+

Yes, and the pattern varies by area. Communities with schools inside them take 16:30 slots; Marina and JLT families with long northbound commutes usually want 18:30 or later, and often prefer the essay to be written between sessions so the live hour targets one criterion. During Ramadan the UAE school day shortens and sessions move to post-Iftar timing rather than pausing. Weekend mornings suit the experimental report, which needs an uninterrupted block for design and analysis.

Send one essay and we will show you where the marks went

If you are looking for an IB DP Psychology home tutor in Dubai, send one marked 22-mark essay and the name of the option your school teaches. Those two things are usually enough to identify which of the five criteria is costing your child marks before the first session begins. The free trial is a full one-to-one lesson over live video with a Diploma Psychology specialist, free of charge, no card details taken and no automatic enrolment, and it ends with the essay scored against each criterion in writing and the lowest one named. Four weeks later you will have a folder to read rather than an impression to trust.
