Experienced IGCSE Tutor in Dubai

Every profile in this market says experienced. An experienced IGCSE tutor in Dubai is a claim you can test, and this page sets out how: which series they have taught, which specifications, what their marking looks like on paper, and what a twelve-week evidence trail should contain. Lessons are delivered online over live video, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time. What follows is the evidence to ask for, not a reassurance to accept.

  • Experience stated as series taught and specifications marked, not years
  • Written work returned with mark-scheme annotations you can read
  • A twelve-week log with a named decision point at week six
  • Delivered online over live video, one student and one specification

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Experience is a claim, not a credential

Nobody advertises an inexperienced tutor. The word appears on every profile in this market, attached to nothing checkable, which makes it the least useful filter a Dubai parent has. Years of teaching correlate only loosely with the thing you need, which is whether this person can look at your child's written answer, say precisely which marks were available and why they were not awarded, and then teach the difference. Some tutors acquire that in two years. Some never acquire it at all and have been teaching for fifteen.

There is a version of experience that is specific enough to verify. Which specification: Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1, Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher tier. How many series: Cambridge runs March, June and November, so a tutor working steadily sees three cohorts a year rather than one. Which papers: a Physics tutor who has repeatedly marked Paper 6 practical questions knows things about where candidates lose marks that a tutor who has only taught theory does not. Which boundary cases: Core-to-Extended moves, private candidates, mid-year arrivals from CBSE or an American curriculum.

This page is built around evidence rather than reassurance, because the brief for it was evidence. It sets out the questions that separate a real track record from a long one, what marked work should look like when it comes back, how a twelve-week record should read, and the points at which you should expect a tutor to tell you their own analysis was wrong. IB Gram is an independent IB and IGCSE tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to Cambridge International, Pearson, or any Dubai school named here.

Delivery matters to the evidence question in one specific way. Tuition for families in the UAE runs online, one-to-one, over live video; IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and home visiting is a service offered only in India. Because the match is not limited by who will drive to your community, the experience you are selecting for can be narrow: not a science tutor, but someone who has taught Cambridge Chemistry 0620 Extended across several series and knows what the mole questions do to a grade 5 candidate.

One caution before the detail. Examiner status is the most commonly asserted and least commonly evidenced claim in this market. IB Gram does not describe tutors as Cambridge or Pearson examiners, because current examiner status is not something a platform can verify on a parent's behalf, and because examiner status would not grant access to marking, boundaries or paper content in any case. Where a tutor's background includes examining, the right response is to ask for the series and the board and to treat the answer as you would any other claim.

At a glance

  • Ask for specification codes and series taught, not years in teaching
  • Ask to see a marked piece of written work with its annotations
  • Expect a named review point in week six, with a decision attached
  • Treat examiner claims as claims: ask which board and which series
  • Online delivery means the match can be specification-specific, not radius-specific
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Experience is worth different amounts at different points in a British-curriculum school career in Dubai. The further into the IGCSE course a child is, the more the specific specification and paper experience matters relative to general teaching ability.

KS3Ages 12-14 · Years 8-9

Years 8-9, before the IGCSE course

At this stage general teaching quality outweighs specification experience. The work is building algebraic fluency, scientific vocabulary and written accuracy that the IGCSE course will assume and not re-teach. A good tutor at this stage needs to diagnose a missing foundation, which is a teaching skill rather than a board-specific one.

Dubai schools take in new arrivals across the year, so Year 9 classes hold children who have come from CBSE, from an American curriculum, or from a different British scheme of work. The gaps are rarely general weakness; they are specific topics that nobody taught in that sequence. Ask a tutor how they would find those gaps in one hour, and listen for a diagnostic method rather than a syllabus overview.

IGCSE-Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, first teaching of the IGCSE course

This is the year the tier decision gets made and where specification experience starts to pay. A tutor who has taught the specification across several series knows which Year 10 topics quietly determine the Year 11 grade, and which ones look hard but carry few marks. Weekly work that tracks the school's sequence costs fewer hours than catching up later.

Because Dubai entries are submitted months before the papers, the Core-or-Extended conversation has to happen in the autumn term of Year 10 or it stops being a real choice. An experienced tutor should be willing to give you an evidenced opinion on that in writing after a handful of sessions, and to say what the Extended content would cost in hours from where your child currently is.

IGCSE-Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11, the examination year

In the exam year, paper-specific experience outweighs almost everything else. The useful tutor is the one who knows the mark distribution of each paper, which command terms recur, and where a given grade band leaks marks. Progress is measurable weekly from marked timed work, which means the twelve-week evidence trail this page describes is available to you from the first fortnight.

Dubai centres enter candidates across Cambridge's March, June and November series and Pearson's May/June and November series, so two children in the same Dubai year group can be working to deadlines months apart. A tutor should ask which series your child is entered for before anything else, because it changes the entire plan and the entry deadline sits well ahead of the papers.

POST16Ages 16-17 · Year 12

Post-IGCSE transition at 16

The experience that matters here is of the gap itself: what A Level or the IB Diploma assumes that IGCSE did not teach. A tutor who has taken students across that transition several times can name the specific prerequisites, rather than discovering them in November of Year 12 when the first assessment comes back.

Dubai sixth forms publish their own subject entry requirements rather than working to a national threshold, and because many campuses run both A Level and the Diploma, the same IGCSE grade can be sufficient for one route and short for the other. Ask your child's school for its published per-subject requirements, then ask a tutor what the gap to that threshold looks like in hours.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The experience worth asking about is subject-specific and paper-specific. For each of these, there is a particular place marks go missing, and a tutor who has taught the specification across several series will name it before you do.

Mathematics (0580 / 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

Ask which board and tier. The question to test experience: where do Extended candidates at grade 5 most reliably lose method marks? A specific answer names unwritten working and multi-step problems rather than a topic list.

Physics (0625 / 4PH1)

Core and Extended

The useful experience is on the practical component. A tutor who has marked Paper 6 answers knows that candidates lose marks on graph axes, significant figures and describing a control rather than naming one, which is not knowledge you acquire from teaching theory.

Chemistry (0620 / 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Experience shows in how fast a tutor locates mole weakness. A grade 5 Chemistry candidate is usually not weak at Chemistry; they are unable to move between mass, moles and concentration without prompting, and that single gap spreads its losses across several papers.

Biology (0610 / 4BI1)

Core and Extended

Biology is marked strictly against command terms, and an experienced tutor spends more time on the difference between describe, explain and suggest than on content. Ask how they would teach a student who knows the material and still writes answers that score half marks.

English Language (0500 / 0510 / 4EA1)

First language and second language routes

Specification experience matters here more than parents assume, because 0500, 0510 and the Pearson equivalents reward different things. Ask which route your child is entered for and what that route's reading-response marks actually require.

Economics (0455) and Business Studies (0450)

Core and Extended

Both are lost on the long questions, where candidates define terms correctly and then fail to apply them to the stimulus material. An experienced tutor can show you, on a marked script, where the evaluation marks were available and went unclaimed.

Computer Science (0478)

Extended only

The experience test is pseudocode. A tutor who programs well is not the same as one who has taught Paper 2 answers to the published conventions, and students fluent in Python routinely lose marks for writing Python where pseudocode was required.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Extended only

A scarce specification and the clearest case for asking about series rather than years. The syllabus assumes fluency that 0580 only introduces, so a tutor whose experience is entirely 0580 will be teaching 0606 for the first time on your child.

Geography (0460) and History (0470)

Core and Extended

Source-and-skills subjects dressed as content subjects. Experienced tutors talk about case-study specificity and arguing from the source; inexperienced ones talk about covering the syllabus, which is the wrong unit of work for these papers.

Arabic as a First Language (0508) and Foreign Language (0544)

Both routes

Mandatory alongside the international curriculum in Dubai private schools under KHDA requirements, and the two routes are different courses with different demands. Children are sometimes placed by nationality rather than competence, and an experienced tutor will raise that before teaching anything.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Each of these session shapes produces a different kind of evidence, and it is worth choosing the one whose evidence answers your actual question. A family unsure whether tuition is the right spend needs a diagnostic block, not a year's commitment.

Weekly one-to-one with marked work between sessions

One subject, one specification, the same weekly slot, with a timed question set marked against the published criteria before each session. This is the shape that generates a readable record: twelve sessions, twelve marked sets, a visible trend. It is also the cheapest route per grade moved, because the tutor is fixing this week's lesson while the homework is still open.

  • A timed set marked and annotated before every session
  • A short written note after each session naming what changed
  • A review session with a decision at week six
  • Pauses for school trips and study leave without losing the slot

A four-to-six session diagnostic block

Bought to answer one question: what is actually wrong, and how many hours would fix it. Session one is a marked timed paper rather than an interview. The block ends with a named list of causes, an estimated hour count and a written recommendation, including the recommendation not to continue if that is the honest answer.

  • Session one is a timed paper under exam conditions
  • Findings specific enough to be re-tested in a fortnight
  • Ends with an hour estimate you can budget against
  • No obligation to continue when the block finishes

Exam-term intensive built on past papers

Two or three shorter sessions a week in the eight to ten weeks before the papers, every one built on a timed question set marked beforehand. The evidence here is the mark trend on comparable papers, which is the only measure that means anything at that stage, and the tutor should be naming which topics they are choosing not to cover.

  • Comparable timed papers so the trend is readable
  • Explicit triage: what is being left out and why
  • Scheduling around Ramadan timings and school study leave
  • Booked a series ahead where a named specialist is needed

01

What experienced should mean on an IGCSE tutor's profile

  • Specification code and tier, not just subject
  • Number of series or cohorts taught, not years in employment
  • Which papers they have most often marked
  • Whether their experience is on your child's board

Experience becomes checkable the moment it is stated as a number of series and a specification code rather than a number of years. Which board, which code, which tier, how many cohorts, which papers most often. A tutor who answers Cambridge 0620 Extended, eleven cohorts, mostly Paper 2 and Paper 4, some Paper 6 has told you something you can test in a session. A tutor who answers over ten years of experience in science has told you nothing that distinguishes them from anyone else on the page.

Years are a weak proxy because the IGCSE cycle is fast. Cambridge runs three series a year, in March, June and November, and Pearson runs May/June and November, so a tutor working steadily sees several cohorts a year rather than one. Two years of continuous IGCSE teaching across those series can involve more marked scripts than a decade of occasional work, and specification content is revised periodically, which means older experience can be experience of a version your child is not sitting.

The table below is the audit. It is not a hostile list of demands; most good tutors answer all of it in a few minutes and are pleased to be asked, because the alternative is competing on adjectives. What it is designed to surface is the difference between someone who has taught this specification repeatedly and someone whose experience is adjacent to it: a Maths teacher who has never taught 0606, a Physics graduate who has never marked a Paper 6 answer, a tutor whose track record is on a different board's version of the same subject.

The twelve-week evidence trail

Tuition that is working produces a record whether anyone intends it to or not. Twelve weekly sessions generate twelve marked question sets, and if those sets are comparable, the trend in them is the only honest measure of whether the money is doing anything. What makes them comparable is deliberate: timed, from past papers, at consistent difficulty, marked against the published criteria rather than impressionistically. A tutor who sets easier work as the term goes on produces a rising line that means nothing.

The schedule below is the shape a readable trail takes. The important feature is week six, which carries a decision rather than a report. By session six there has been enough marked work to know whether the original diagnosis was right, and the professional response to a flat line at that point is to say the analysis was wrong and change it, or to say tuition is not the intervention this child needs. Families in Dubai most often lose money not to bad tutors but to arrangements with no review point, which run for terms because nobody ever set a date to ask.

Parents do not need to read mark schemes to use this. Three questions cover it. Is the work the same difficulty as it was in week two? What was the mark then and what is it now? And what did the tutor say would happen by now at week one? If a tutor cannot produce comparable scripts, the trail does not exist, and reported progress is a recollection rather than a measurement.

03

Mark-scheme literacy is the skill that separates experience from longevity

  • Ask a tutor to read one of your child's returned scripts and say where marks went
  • Expect a specific answer in a minute or two, not a general comment
  • Command-term errors are a rule problem, not a revision problem
  • Method marks are published structure, not opinion about presentation

IGCSE papers are marked to published criteria, and those criteria are specific enough that a tutor who knows them can usually predict where a particular child will leak marks before they sit the paper. That predictive ability is what experience should have bought, and it is the one thing worth testing directly. Ask a prospective tutor to look at a piece of your child's returned work and tell you where the marks went. A confident, specific answer within a minute or two is a strong signal. A general comment about needing to show more working is not.

Command terms are the clearest example. On Biology and Chemistry papers, describe, explain and suggest demand different things, and a student who answers all three as if they said describe loses application and evaluation marks consistently across every paper they sit. That is not a content weakness and no amount of revision fixes it, because the child believes they answered the question. An experienced tutor recognises the pattern from the script rather than from a conversation, and treats it as a teachable rule rather than carelessness.

The same literacy shows up in method marks. Extended Mathematics awards marks for working, and candidates who do arithmetic mentally and write only the result lose marks on answers that were substantially correct. Physics awards marks for stating the formula used before substituting into it. These are not insights; they are the published structure of the papers. What distinguishes experience is noticing which of them is costing this particular child the most, and teaching that one first rather than all of them at once.

04

Reading a marked script as a parent

Most of what a parent needs from marked work is in the annotations rather than the total. The total tells you where the child is; the annotations tell you why, and whether the tutor is diagnosing or decorating. Work that comes back with a number and the word good is not feedback. Work that comes back with a specific note at the point of loss, in language the student can act on, is the product you are paying for.

The table below translates the annotations that recur most often on IGCSE scripts. None of them require subject knowledge to interpret, which is the point: a parent who can read them can hold a sensible conversation about their child's work without having studied the subject. They also let you check consistency over weeks. The same annotation appearing in week two and week ten means something has not been taught, and that is a question for the tutor rather than for the child.

One warning about volume. A script covered in ink is not necessarily better marked than one carrying four precise notes. Students act on a small number of corrections and ignore a page of them, so selective marking is a professional judgement rather than a shortcut. An experienced tutor marks the two or three losses that recur, names which of them the student is changing this week, and leaves the rest alone until those are fixed. That is why the short written note after a session matters as much as the ink on the script itself: the note is where the week's instruction actually lives, and it is the part a parent can read in thirty seconds.

What an experienced tutor does in the first three sessions

  • Session one measures; it does not interview
  • Session two teaches one named cause, not a topic tour
  • Session three tests whether the fix survives unprompted
  • By session three you should hold causes, an hour estimate and a review date

The first three sessions are where experience is most visible, because an inexperienced tutor spends them being pleasant and an experienced one spends them narrowing. Session one should put timed written work in front of the student and read the working rather than the answers. Session two should teach exactly one of the causes identified, not a tour of the topic. Session three should test whether that fix survives when nobody is prompting, which is the only way to know whether anything was learned.

What should not happen in those three sessions is content coverage. A tutor who opens by working through the syllabus from the beginning has decided, without evidence, that the problem is coverage. Sometimes it is, but in most cases a child achieving grade 5 in Chemistry has met every topic on the specification and has a specific recurring failure that no amount of re-teaching the content will touch. Starting from a diagnosis rather than from chapter one is the difference between fourteen hours and forty.

By the end of session three a parent should hold three things in writing: the named causes, an hour estimate, and a review date. None of these is a promise about a grade, and an experienced tutor will say so explicitly. What they are is an account of a professional judgement that can later be shown to have been right or wrong, which is exactly what you want from someone charging by the hour.

06

Red flags on a Dubai tutor profile

Some claims in this market are not merely vague; they are signals of a problem. A promised grade is the clearest, because no tutor controls the paper, the marking or the boundaries, and the only honest way to offer such a promise is to publish refund terms that are actually honoured. A self-asserted star rating is another: one provider in this market publishes its own aggregate rating of 4.9, which is a structured-data policy problem as well as a trust one, and two providers show different review counts on the same page.

Offers to help with coursework deserve particular attention. A tutor teaches, reviews and gives feedback on work the student produced. Any offer to supply text for a submission, or to edit a piece to completion on the student's behalf, is an academic-integrity breach, and the consequence lands on the child rather than on the provider. One operation in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright. The boundary is not a nuance, and a tutor who is vague about it has told you where they stand.

The last category is misrepresented location and status. Several pages ranking for UAE tutoring queries route parents to Indian phone numbers without saying so, one shows a Dubai footer address on an Abu Dhabi page, and claimed regulator approval is common. IB Gram does not hold or claim approval from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge International or Pearson, does not operate a UAE office, and states plainly that UAE delivery is online. Where a provider is vague about any of those three things, ask directly.

Examiner claims and what they can honestly mean

  • Examining confers familiarity with criteria, not access to papers or boundaries
  • Status changes between series and cannot be verified by a platform for you
  • Ask which board, which component, which series
  • Test the underlying skill on a real script instead of weighing the label

Examiner status is the most asserted and least evidenced claim in this market, and it is worth being precise about what it could do for your child even if true. An examiner marks scripts to a published scheme during a marking window. That work gives a person real familiarity with how candidates lose marks and how the criteria are applied in practice. It does not give access to future papers, to grade boundaries before they are set, or to any material a teacher cannot otherwise obtain.

IB Gram does not describe tutors as Cambridge or Pearson examiners. The reason is practical rather than modest: current examiner status is a contractual relationship between an individual and a board, it changes between series, and a platform cannot verify it on a parent's behalf in a way that would be honest to publish. Where a tutor's own background includes examining, the right response is the same as for any other claim: ask which board, which component and which series, and weigh the specificity of the answer.

What you can test directly is the thing examining is supposed to confer. Put a marked script in front of the tutor and ask them to say where the criteria would and would not award a mark. Someone who has marked a lot of scripts answers that quickly and specifically, whatever their formal status has been. Someone who has not will generalise. That test is available to you in the trial lesson and costs nothing, which makes it more useful than the claim itself.

08

Where specification experience is worth paying for, and where it is not

Specification-specific experience carries a premium in this market, and it is not always worth paying. For a Year 8 child building algebraic fluency, a strong general maths teacher is entirely sufficient and often better, because the work is foundational rather than board-shaped. For a Year 11 candidate eight weeks from a Cambridge Paper 4, the premium is the whole point: the tutor's value is almost entirely in knowing that paper's mark distribution and the predictable losses on it.

Between those two poles, the test is whether the problem is content or assessment. Content problems respond to good teaching regardless of board. Assessment problems, which is what most grade-5-to-grade-7 situations turn out to be, respond only to someone who knows how the specific papers award marks. Families often buy the expensive version for a content problem and the cheap version for an assessment problem, which is the wrong way round and explains a good deal of disappointment.

Scarcity is the other half of the calculation. For Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 pseudocode work, Arabic as a first language 0508 and private-candidate entries, the question is not what experience costs but whether anyone within reach has it. That is the situation online delivery addresses directly: the pool becomes everyone teaching that specification at an hour that works in Gulf Standard Time, rather than everyone willing to drive to your community after the school run. In those cases the premium is not really a premium at all, because there is no cheaper local option being declined; the choice is between the specialist and nobody, and the honest answer when nobody suitable is free is to say so rather than to substitute a generalist and hope.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Because sessions run online, the area a family lives in changes when a session can start rather than who is available to teach it. That matters to the evidence question: a tutoring plan evaluated at week six needs six weeks of sessions that actually happened at a workable hour.

Dubai Marina, JBR and Bluewaters

Apartment living with a school bus arriving late in the afternoon, so a realistic start is from 17:00 and a 90-minute session in exam term needs the earlier of two possible slots. High relocation turnover means mid-year starts, and mid-year starts need a sharper diagnostic.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Mizhar

Villa communities with schools close by and children home early, so 16:00 starts hold. Large IGCSE cohorts here and strong demand for Maths and the sciences, which means the evidence trail is usually built around marked timed papers from week two.

Dubai Hills Estate and Arabian Ranches

Long internal distances and school runs feeding the Al Qudra and Umm Suqeim corridors. Families here often book two subjects in one evening, which makes the week-six review easier to read because both subjects have the same number of sessions behind them.

Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3

The shortest school runs in the city and the earliest feasible session starts, often competing with established swimming and music commitments. Where the evening is already full, the evidence trail works better on two shorter sessions than on one long one.

Jumeirah Village Circle, Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

School runs crossing Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, where an afternoon journey doubles. Sessions here usually start from 17:30, and the main threat to a twelve-week record is cancelled sessions rather than ineffective ones.

Business Bay, Downtown and DIFC

Tower living where quiet study space is the binding constraint. An evidence-led plan depends on written work being attempted properly between sessions, which in a shared room means agreeing when and where that happens as part of the plan.

Deira, Bur Dubai and Al Qusais

Older districts with British and Indian-curriculum schools side by side and heavy demand for IGCSE Maths and sciences. Session timing is usually built around Maghrib and family dinner, which shapes the slot more than traffic does.

Mudon, Town Square and Dubai South

Outlying communities where the local tutor pool is thinnest, so specification-specific experience is hard to find within driving distance. These are the areas where an online match changes what experience is actually available to a family.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

British-curriculum schools serving Marina, Al Barsha and Tecom

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the specification code, the tier and the series

Cambridge 0620 Extended for June is a different request from Pearson 4CH1 in November, and the right tutor is not the same person. The code is on your child's statement of entry and the school's exams officer can confirm it. Sending it first removes a week of guesswork.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson, used as a test

One session before any payment, with no card details taken. Use it for the script test: hand the tutor a piece of your child's returned work and ask where the marks went. The specificity of that answer in the first few minutes tells you more than any profile.

  3. 03

A diagnostic that produces causes, hours and a date

The first working session is timed written work, not a conversation. You should receive three named causes specific enough to be re-tested in a fortnight, an estimated hour count, and a review date in week six. Ask for all three in writing before agreeing to a block.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions with comparable marked work

A timed set at consistent difficulty, marked against the published criteria before each session, plus a short note saying what changed. Consistent difficulty is the part that matters: easier work later in the term produces a rising mark that measures nothing.

  5. 05

    The week-six decision

At the review session the marks on comparable work either moved or they did not. If they did not, the diagnosis was wrong and the plan changes, or tuition is not the right intervention and we say so. That date exists so the question gets asked by someone other than you.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Experience stated as series and specifications

Tutors are described by which specification codes they have taught and how many cohorts, because that is checkable and years are not. Cambridge runs three series a year, so a steady IGCSE tutor accumulates cohorts faster than a calendar suggests.

Marked work you can actually read

Written work comes back annotated at the point of loss, in language a student can act on, with two named things to change rather than a page of ink. A parent who can read four annotations can hold a sensible conversation about the subject without having studied it.

A review date set before the first paid session

Week six carries a decision rather than a report. If comparable marked work has not moved, the analysis was wrong and the plan changes. Arrangements without a review point are how families end up terms into a payment with no evidence either way.

No examiner labels we cannot stand behind

Tutors are not described as Cambridge or Pearson examiners, because current status is a contractual matter between a person and a board that changes between series and cannot be verified for you. The underlying skill is testable on a real script instead.

Stated limits on assessed work

A tutor teaches, reviews and gives feedback on work the student has produced. No text is supplied for a submission and no piece is edited to completion on a student's behalf. Parts of this market sell exactly that, and the consequence falls on the child.

An independent platform with no claimed approval

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It does not hold or claim approval from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge International or Pearson, operates no UAE office, and delivers UAE tuition online rather than at an address.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How do I check that an experienced IGCSE tutor in Dubai is actually experienced?+

Convert the claim into numbers you can test. Ask which specification codes they have taught, which tier, how many cohorts, and which papers they have most often marked. Cambridge 0620 Extended, nine cohorts, mostly Paper 4 is an answer; many years across the main boards is not. Then test the skill directly in the trial lesson: hand them a piece of your child's returned work and ask where the marks went. A specific answer inside two minutes is the signal you want. Years of employment correlate only loosely with the ability to read a script and name the loss.

Why are years of teaching a weak measure for an IGCSE tutor?+

Because the IGCSE cycle is fast and specifications change. Cambridge runs March, June and November series and Pearson runs May/June and November, so two years of continuous teaching can involve more marked scripts than a decade of occasional work. Specification content is also revised periodically, which means older experience may be experience of a version your child is not sitting. The useful unit is cohorts of a named code, not calendar years, and it is a question most good tutors are pleased to be asked because the alternative is competing on adjectives.

What should twelve weeks of IGCSE tuition produce that I can actually inspect?+

Twelve marked question sets at consistent difficulty, a short written note after each session, and a review at week six with a decision attached. The consistency is what makes it readable: a tutor who sets easier work as the term goes on produces a rising mark that measures nothing. Three questions cover your side of it. Is this work the same difficulty as week two? What was the mark then and now? And what did the tutor say at week one would have happened by now? If comparable scripts do not exist, the record does not either.

What happens at the week-six review if my child's marks have not moved?+

The honest options are that the diagnosis was wrong, the plan was right but too slow, or tuition is not the intervention this child needs. All three are things a tutor should be willing to say out loud, and the third is the one families almost never hear. What should not happen is a report that describes effort and attitude instead of marks. Set that date before the first paid session and put it in your own calendar, because the single most expensive failure in this market is an arrangement that runs for terms with no point at which the question gets asked.

Can a tutor really predict where my child will lose marks before the exam?+

To a useful degree, yes, because IGCSE papers are marked to published criteria and individual candidates lose marks in patterned ways. A child who answers every explain command as if it said describe will do so again in May. A child who does arithmetic mentally and writes only the result will lose method marks on every multi-step question. Those patterns are visible in a few marked scripts. What cannot be predicted is a grade, because that depends on the paper, the marking and the boundaries, none of which any tutor controls.

Should I pay more for a tutor who has taught my child's exact specification?+

It depends on the problem. For Year 8 and 9 foundations, a strong general teacher is sufficient and sometimes better, because the work is pre-specification. For a Year 11 candidate weeks from a specific paper, the premium is the whole point: the value is in knowing that paper's mark distribution and its predictable losses. The practical test is whether the issue is content or assessment. Content problems respond to good teaching on any board; assessment problems respond only to someone who knows how these particular papers award marks.

How should I interpret a tutor who says they are an examiner?+

Treat it as a claim and ask which board, which component and which series. Examining means marking scripts to a published scheme during a marking window; it confers real familiarity with how criteria are applied, and it confers no access to future papers or to boundaries before they are set. IB Gram does not label tutors as Cambridge or Pearson examiners, because current status is contractual, changes between series, and cannot be verified on a parent's behalf. The underlying skill is testable on one of your child's own scripts in a trial lesson, which is better evidence than the label.

What does good marking on a returned IGCSE script look like?+

A small number of precise notes at the point of loss, in language the student can act on, plus two named things to change this week. Not a total and the word good, and not a page covered in ink: students act on three corrections and ignore thirty. Useful annotations are readable without subject knowledge, which is the point. No working shown, describe not explain, formula not stated and not applied to the data each name a different fixable habit, and the same note appearing in week two and week ten is a question for the tutor.

Our tutor is pleasant and my child likes the sessions, but nothing has changed. What now?+

Ask for the comparable scripts. Rapport is necessary and insufficient, and a session that is forty-five minutes of a tutor explaining and ten of a child nodding feels productive while producing nothing. The diagnostic question is whether the child attempts work unaided during the session and whether anything is marked between sessions. If the answer to both is no, the format's advantage has been given away. Raise it as a change of method rather than a complaint, and set a four-week point at which comparable marked work either moved or it did not.

Does an experienced tutor need to follow our Dubai school's scheme of work?+

In term time, yes, for a practical reason: the value of weekly one-to-one is fixing this week's lesson while the homework is still open and the content is fresh. A tutor running a parallel syllabus at their own pace creates a second set of deadlines and leaves the school's work untouched. Ask them to work from the scheme of work, the specification code on the statement of entry and the school's assessment calendar. The exception is the exam term, when the sequence should follow the mark distribution of the papers rather than the school's teaching order.

How many sessions before I can tell whether an IGCSE tutor is any good?+

Three for the tutor, six for the plan. By session three you should hold three named causes specific enough to be re-tested, an estimated hour count and a review date, all in writing. That tells you whether the tutor is diagnosing or coasting. Whether the plan works is a different question and needs comparable marked work at week six against a week-one baseline. Judging a tutor on week one is unfair; waiting a whole term to judge the plan is expensive. Three and six are the useful checkpoints.

Which IGCSE subjects most often need a specialist rather than a good general tutor?+

Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 where the published pseudocode conventions decide marks, Arabic as a first language 0508, and any subject for a private candidate without a school sequencing the work. The practical sciences also reward specialists at paper level: a tutor who has marked Physics Paper 6 answers knows the graph, significant-figure and control losses that a theory-only teacher does not. Extended Mathematics, Biology and English have a deep enough pool in Dubai that a strong general teacher is often the right choice.

Is an experienced tutor available to visit our villa in Dubai?+

Not through IB Gram. Tuition for UAE families is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, and in-home visiting is offered only in India. The in-home market in Dubai exists and charges roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel inside the fee. What online delivery changes is which experience is available to you: the pool becomes everyone who teaches your child's specification at an hour that works in Gulf Standard Time, rather than everyone willing to drive to your community after the school run.

Do tutors working with Dubai families need a MoHRE permit?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE are covered by the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and those operating without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you. MoHRE's own service page is the route to verify an application.

What should an experienced tutor refuse to do with my child's written work?+

Produce any part of a submission. A tutor explains why the criteria would or would not award a mark, gives feedback on what the student has already written, and coaches planning and redrafting. They do not supply text for an assessed piece or edit one to completion on a student's behalf. That boundary matters because the consequence of crossing it falls on the child rather than the tutor, and because parts of this market sell precisely that. Ask the question directly and listen for a clear answer rather than a reassuring one.

Ask for the evidence before you agree to the block

Three requests settle most of what this page covers. Ask which specification codes and how many cohorts, so experience becomes a number. Ask the tutor to read one of your child's returned scripts in the trial lesson and say where the marks went, so the claim is tested rather than accepted. And ask for a hour estimate and a week-six review date in writing, so there is a point at which the plan is judged on comparable marked work. A free trial lesson comes first, with no card details and no commitment, and the answers you get in it are the evidence.
