IB Chemistry Tutor in Tilal Al Ghaf

An IB chemistry tutor in Tilal Al Ghaf should be able to say which mechanism your child cannot draw, which calculation step they lose, and which sign convention they get wrong. Chemistry is the Diploma science where the diagnosis is most specific, and this page is built from the syllabus rather than around reassurance. IB Gram teaches one-to-one, live over video, at Gulf Standard Time.

Chemistry fails in specific, nameable places

Chemistry is the Diploma science where a parent can be told exactly what is wrong. The subject is built from a small number of recurring operations — a mole calculation, a mechanism, an energy cycle, a titration curve, a structure deduced from spectra — and a student either executes each one reliably or does not. So a marked paper does not have to produce the vague verdict that chemistry is difficult. It can produce a sentence like: the mole calculations are secure, the organic mechanisms are memorised rather than reasoned, and every energetics question with a negative enthalpy lost its sign.

That sentence is what the first session should deliver, and it is the difference between a plan and a programme of general support. A student whose organic chemistry is memorised performs well on familiar molecules and collapses on unfamiliar ones, which is precisely what the Higher Level paper presents. A student whose mole work is shaky fails in titration, yield, gas volume and equilibrium questions, and the report will list four weak topics rather than one weak operation.

So this page works through the syllabus operations where marks actually go: the calculation types and the trap in each, the energetics sign conventions, the mechanism types and what a mark scheme wants drawn, the strength-and-concentration confusion that survives into Higher Level, and the systematic method for deducing a structure from mass spectrometry, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance together. It is deliberately specific, because the pages currently ranking for this search between them name almost no syllabus content at all.

Tilal Al Ghaf contributes one practical advantage worth using. The community has a British-curriculum school inside its boundary and DAMAC Hills and Dubai Sports City next door have their own provision, so pupils are frequently home before four. Chemistry is precision work — a rounding decision at step one survives to the final answer — and a student at four-thirty makes arithmetic errors at a far lower rate than the same student at seven. That is a scheduling advantage with a mark consequence.

The scientific investigation carries 20% of the chemistry grade and is marked out of 24 across four criteria. In chemistry the characteristic trap is a reaction whose measurable change is too small or too fast for school apparatus, which means the mark is largely decided before any solution is made up. It is the earliest real deadline in the subject and the point where a tutor can most legitimately help.

IB Gram delivers chemistry tuition to Tilal Al Ghaf as live one-to-one lessons over video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Chemistry teaching is a shared screen with every line of a calculation visible, a marked mechanism and a conversation about an investigation design, none of which needs anyone in the room.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry reaches a Tilal Al Ghaf student by different routes, and each leaves a different operation unpractised. These are the four stages.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE chemistry, the usual local route

Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 students arrive with solid coverage of bonding, moles and qualitative analysis and a short-answer habit. The gap is depth: Diploma organic chemistry demands mechanism reasoning rather than product recall, and energetics becomes quantitative where IGCSE left it descriptive.

Provision in and around Tilal Al Ghaf is predominantly British curriculum, so this is how most local students arrive. Whether they sat separate sciences at the higher tier rather than a combined award matters more to their first Diploma term than the grade they achieved.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme sciences

Four criteria per subject, each out of eight, including processing and evaluating. Students from this route reach Diploma chemistry comfortable with experimental thinking and light on quantitative volume, because the programme rarely drills calculation at the rate the Diploma assumes.

IB continuum schools sit a short drive out towards Al Barsha South, Dubai Hills Estate and the Sustainable City. A student arriving from that route will find the investigation familiar and the three-step mole calculation considerably less so.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Chemistry

Two written papers at each level plus the scientific investigation at 20%. Higher Level deepens the treatment of most topics rather than appending separate ones, and adds transition metals, buffers, cell potentials and extended organic mechanisms. Confirm current weightings with your child's teacher.

UAE schools overwhelmingly enter candidates for the May session. No IB exam or results dates appear on this page, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and publishing an unverified date that a parent acts on is worse than publishing none. Confirm every one with the school's Diploma coordinator.

Chemistry as a university prerequisite

Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science and chemical engineering routes commonly require Higher Level chemistry, often with a minimum grade. Requirements are published by each institution and vary by course and year, so read them on the university's own course pages rather than inferring them.

For a UAE university application the Ministry of Education's equivalency requirements apply alongside the university's own. The British-track figures are published and sourced; no IB points threshold should be relied on unless read on the Ministry's own channel. IB Gram neither performs nor guarantees equivalency.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the chemistry operations Tilal Al Ghaf families ask about, each with the specific trap attached. Read this list against a marked paper and the diagnosis is usually obvious.

The mole concept

HL and SL

Amount of substance, molar mass, concentration and gas volumes. The load-bearing operation: titration, yield, limiting reagent and equilibrium questions all rest on it. The trap is units — moles per cubic decimetre against moles per cubic centimetre — which costs more across a paper than any conceptual gap.

Stoichiometry and limiting reagents

HL and SL

Reacting masses, percentage yield and atom economy. The trap is identifying the limiting reagent before calculating anything else; students who work from the wrong reactant produce an internally consistent answer that is entirely wrong and lose the whole question.

Atomic structure and periodicity

HL and SL, extended at HL

Electron configuration, ionisation energy trends and periodic behaviour, with transition metal chemistry at Higher Level. Marks go to students who explain trends from shielding and effective nuclear charge rather than reciting them. Transition metals are self-contained and respond well to focused work.

Bonding, structure and shape

HL and SL, extended at HL

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces and molecular geometry, with hybridisation and formal charge at Higher Level. Shape and polarity questions are lost by students who know the theory and do not count lone pairs before deciding the geometry.

Energetics and thermochemistry

HL and SL, extended at HL

Enthalpy changes, Hess cycles, bond enthalpies and, at Higher Level, entropy and Gibbs free energy. Sign convention decides the marks: a correct magnitude with the wrong sign scores nothing. Drawing the Hess cycle before calculating almost eliminates the error.

Kinetics

HL and SL, extended at HL

Rate, collision theory, activation energy and, at Higher Level, rate laws, orders of reaction and the Arrhenius treatment. Determining order from data is a procedure teachable in one session and then permanent, which makes it good value late in the course.

Equilibrium

HL and SL, extended at HL

Dynamic equilibrium, Le Chatelier reasoning and, at Higher Level, equilibrium constant calculations. Written answers lose marks by saying the equilibrium shifts without naming the change driving it; calculations lose marks to assumptions that are never stated.

Acids, bases and buffers

HL and SL, substantially extended at HL

Strength against concentration, pH scales and, at Higher Level, weak acid calculations, buffers and titration curves. The strength-and-concentration confusion is the most persistent conceptual error in the course and survives into Higher Level unless addressed directly.

Redox and electrochemistry

HL and SL, extended at HL

Oxidation states, half-equations, electrochemical cells and, at Higher Level, cell potentials and electrolysis calculations. Balancing half-equations in acidic or basic conditions is a procedure rather than an insight and is reliably learnable in a session or two.

Organic chemistry and mechanisms

HL and SL, substantially extended at HL

Functional groups, reaction pathways and, at Higher Level, nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic addition mechanisms. The commonest Dubai request and the commonest failure: memorising products instead of reasoning from electron movement, which fails on any unfamiliar molecule.

Spectroscopy and structure determination

HL and SL

Mass spectrometry, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance used together to deduce a structure. Systematic and therefore highly learnable, and reliably skipped in revision because students treat it as an add-on rather than as a method with a fixed order.

Uncertainty and data processing

HL and SL, examined and internally assessed

Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, and consistent significant figures. Examined in the data section of the written papers and central to the investigation, so time spent here is paid for twice and is almost always under-taught.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Tilal Al Ghaf families run IB chemistry with us, all live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time. Chemistry work divides cleanly into operations, so blocks tend to be short and specific.

Operation-specific blocks

Chemistry divides into recurring operations, each with its own trap, and most of them can be repaired in one to three sessions. A mole block. A mechanism block. An energetics sign block. A spectroscopy block. The diagnostic names which, and the block has a length and a target rather than running indefinitely.

  • Diagnosis by operation, not by topic heading
  • Most operations repair in one to three sessions
  • Working enforced so method marks survive
  • Written note the same evening after each lesson

Weekly one-to-one, early slot

One tutor, one protected slot, tracking the school's topic order. The early start this community allows matters in chemistry specifically, because a tired student makes arithmetic errors rather than conceptual ones and a multi-step calculation compounds whatever happens at step one.

  • Four-thirty starts are realistic in this community
  • Topic order follows the school's own scheme
  • Problem set between sessions, marked in the next
  • Calculation-heavy work placed in the earliest slot

Investigation coaching across a term

The investigation is 20% of the grade and the mark is largely set at the design stage. Coaching runs across a term: whether the chosen change is measurable with school apparatus, then uncertainty treatment, then structured feedback on the student's own drafts against the four criteria.

  • Design tested for measurability before any solution is made
  • Uncertainty propagation taught properly, once
  • Feedback against the four criteria by mark allocation
  • Nothing written by the tutor at any stage

Holiday blocks for quantitative fluency

Four or five sessions a week in a Dubai school break, aimed at the mole concept and multi-step calculation. Fluency comes from volume rather than explanation, and chemistry punishes a weak quantitative foundation more than the other sciences because so many topics sit downstream of it.

  • Four to five sessions a week in school breaks
  • Aimed at moles, stoichiometry and energetics volume
  • Post-Iftar scheduling available in Ramadan
  • Shorter sessions in preference to skipped weeks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Tilal Al Ghaf

01

The calculation types, and the trap in each

Chemistry calculations are not a single skill. They are a handful of distinct operations, each with a characteristic failure, and a student is usually reliable in some and not others. A diagnosis that says 'struggles with calculations' is therefore almost useless; one that says 'secure on molar mass, loses limiting reagent questions, and drops units in titration work' is a three-session plan.

The unit problem deserves naming first because it is the largest single source of lost marks in the subject. Concentration appears as moles per cubic decimetre in most of the syllabus and volumes are routinely given in cubic centimetres, so every solution question contains a conversion. Students who hold the conversion in their heads lose marks they would keep if they wrote it down, and the fix is procedural rather than conceptual: write the conversion as a line of working, every time, until it is automatic.

The second is compounding. Mark schemes credit the steps, so a multi-step calculation with no visible working loses everything when an early rounding decision propagates, whereas the same error with full working loses one mark and keeps the rest. Students who calculate quickly in their heads are the most affected, and they are usually surprised to learn that a strength they have been praised for since primary school is costing them marks.

The third is the limiting reagent, which fails differently. A student who works from the wrong reactant produces a clean, internally consistent answer that is entirely wrong, and because the arithmetic is correct they often cannot see what happened. The fix is a habit: identify and state the limiting reagent as a separate step before any mass or volume is calculated. The table below sets out the operations with the trap attached to each.

Energetics: the sign conventions that decide the marks

Energetics is the topic where students most often produce correct chemistry and score nothing. The reason is narrow and fixable: the sign carries the meaning, and a correctly calculated magnitude with the wrong sign is a wrong answer rather than a partially right one. Exothermic changes are negative, endothermic positive, and every operation in the topic either preserves or reverses that.

The commonest error is sign reversal in a Hess cycle. When a step is used in the opposite direction to the way it was given, its enthalpy change reverses, and a student working algebraically without a diagram will reverse some and not others. Students who draw the cycle before doing any arithmetic almost never make the error, because the arrows make the direction visible. That is a procedural change achievable in one or two sessions and permanent afterwards.

The second is bond enthalpy calculations, where the convention runs the opposite way to intuition: breaking bonds is endothermic and forming them exothermic, so the arithmetic is bonds broken minus bonds formed. Students who memorise the formula without the reasoning invert it under pressure. The third is calorimetry, where the mass used is the mass of the solution being heated rather than the mass of the solute reacting, and the sign has to be applied to the enthalpy change rather than to the temperature change.

At Higher Level the same discipline extends to entropy and Gibbs free energy, where a spontaneity conclusion depends entirely on getting signs right across two quantities and a temperature. A student who is unreliable on signs at Standard Level will be unreliable on spontaneity at Higher Level, which is why this block is worth doing properly early rather than patching later. It is also why energetics questions are a good diagnostic: a student's sign discipline is visible in a single question.

03

Organic chemistry: mechanisms, not product lists

  • Five questions in order handle any unfamiliar molecule
  • Curly arrows must start at a lone pair or a bond, not at an atom
  • Charges on intermediates carry marks
  • Primary against tertiary carbon changes the pathway
  • Rebuilding from memorising to reasoning takes a term

Organic chemistry is the commonest chemistry request in Dubai and the one most often studied in the least useful way. Students learn what named reactions produce and perform well on familiar molecules, and then meet an unfamiliar one in the Higher Level paper and have nothing. The marks are in reasoning from electron movement, and that reasoning transfers to any structure.

The reasoning is a small number of questions asked in order. Where is the electron-rich site and where is the electron-poor one? Which bond is polarised, and in which direction? Which species is the nucleophile and which the electrophile? What intermediate forms, and is it charged? What leaves, and why is it a good leaving group? A student who asks those five questions can handle a molecule they have never seen, which is exactly what the paper requires.

The mechanisms themselves are also marked on how they are drawn, which students under-estimate. A curly arrow must start from a lone pair or a bond and end where the electrons go; an arrow drawn from the wrong place loses the mark even where the overall transformation is right. Charges must be shown on intermediates. Partial charges should be marked where polarisation is being used in the argument. These are conventions, and conventions are teachable in a way that chemical intuition is not.

At Higher Level the organic content extends substantially, and the structural distinctions matter: whether a substitution proceeds in one step or two, whether the carbon is primary or tertiary, whether a reagent attacks the most or least substituted position. Each of those is a reasoning step rather than a fact to be recalled. Rebuilding a memorising student into a reasoning one takes a term, and it is the commonest second-year request from capable students in this part of Dubai.

04

Acids and bases: strength is not concentration

This is the most persistent conceptual confusion in the whole course and it survives into Higher Level in students who have been taught it several times. Strength describes how completely an acid dissociates; concentration describes how much of it is present. A concentrated weak acid and a dilute strong acid are different things, and almost every acids question in the Diploma depends on the distinction somewhere.

The confusion shows up in predictable places. A student asked to compare the pH of two solutions reasons from concentration alone and ignores dissociation. A student asked why a weak acid's titration curve has a different shape describes the curve rather than attributing the shape to partial dissociation and the buffer region. A student asked to explain why a weak acid reacts with the same stoichiometry but a different rate conflates the two ideas entirely.

The diagnostic for this is a single question and worth asking early: which has the lower pH, a dilute solution of a strong acid or a concentrated solution of a weak one, and what information would you need to decide? A student who answers immediately from one variable has the confusion; a student who asks for the dissociation constant and the concentrations does not. Resolving it takes one or two sessions and immediately improves every subsequent acids question.

At Higher Level the topic extends into weak acid calculations, buffers and titration curves, all of which assume the distinction is secure. Buffer questions in particular require holding both ideas at once: a buffer resists pH change because a weak acid and its conjugate base are both present in appreciable concentration. A student who has not separated strength from concentration cannot reason about that, and no amount of practice on buffer arithmetic fixes the underlying confusion.

05

Spectroscopy: a method with a fixed order

Structure determination from spectra is the most systematic part of the chemistry syllabus and therefore the most teachable, and it is reliably the least revised because students treat it as an add-on rather than as a method. There is a fixed order to work in, and following it turns an intimidating question into a sequence of small deductions.

Start with the mass spectrum for the molecular mass, which constrains the possible formulae immediately. Then use the infrared spectrum to identify functional groups from the characteristic absorption regions, which narrows the possibilities further — the presence or absence of a carbonyl, a hydroxyl or a carbon-nitrogen bond eliminates whole families of structures. Then use the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum for the carbon or hydrogen environments: how many distinct environments, in what ratio, and with what splitting pattern.

Each technique on its own is ambiguous and the three together are usually decisive, which is the examiner's point in giving all three. Students lose marks by working from one spectrum and guessing, or by identifying the functional group correctly and then proposing a structure with the wrong number of environments. Writing down what each spectrum has told you before proposing anything is the discipline that earns the marks.

Because the method is fixed, this is one of the best-value blocks in the subject: two or three sessions on the order of operations and the characteristic regions, and a student can approach any structure determination question systematically for the rest of the course. It is also near-perfect for online delivery, since the work is reading spectra on a shared screen and annotating them together, which is easier than passing a printed spectrum back and forth across a table.

A past-paper routine for chemistry

  • Work by operation first, then by whole paper
  • Enforce visible working on every multi-step calculation
  • Mark against the published scheme, not a worked answer
  • Categorise losses into six types and keep a tally
  • Full papers under timing, in the earliest slot available

Chemistry past-paper work is usually done in the least productive order: questions attempted, answers checked against a worked solution, mistakes noted as careless. That routine teaches almost nothing, because it does not distinguish between the operations and it treats every error as the same kind of error.

What works has four elements. First, work by operation rather than by paper at the start: a set of mole questions, then a set of energetics questions, then a set of mechanisms. This exposes which operations are reliable and which are not, which a mixed paper obscures. Second, enforce visible working on every multi-step calculation, because the mark scheme credits the steps and a student who writes nothing cannot see where the error entered either.

Third, mark against the published scheme rather than against a worked answer, and categorise each loss: unit error, sign error, limiting reagent, mechanism convention, command term, or genuine content gap. Those six categories cover the large majority of chemistry losses and each points to a different and specific repair. A tally across three or four papers produces a diagnosis no single paper gives.

Fourth, once the operations are reliable, switch to full papers under timing. Chemistry papers are long and the error rate rises towards the end, which only becomes visible under real conditions. This is where Tilal Al Ghaf's early slot earns its keep: a full paper at four-thirty is a fair test, and the same paper at seven in the evening measures tiredness. A misleadingly poor result late in the day knocks confidence for no useful reason.

07

The investigation, and the chemistry-specific trap

The scientific investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — and carries 20% of the grade at both levels. Confirm the current criteria with your child's teacher, since the IB revises its guides. What distinguishes chemistry is where the design fails.

In chemistry the trap is measurability against school apparatus. A student picks a reaction that is genuinely interesting and then discovers the colour change is too subtle to quantify, the reaction too fast to time by hand, the temperature change inside the resolution of a school thermometer, or the yield too small to weigh reliably. The data then shows noise rather than a relationship, and no amount of careful writing afterwards recovers it. The most valuable hour a chemistry tutor spends is asking, before any apparatus is booked, whether the proposed change can actually be measured with the equipment available.

The second chemistry-specific issue is significant figures and uncertainty carried consistently through a multi-step calculation. Data analysis rewards correct processing and genuine uncertainty treatment, and a chemistry investigation usually involves several steps between the raw measurement and the reported result, so inconsistency compounds. This is the same skill examined in the data section of the written papers, which means the teaching is paid for twice.

Conclusion and evaluation together carry twelve of the twenty-four marks and are the cheapest to improve, because they reward thinking rather than apparatus. A conclusion must answer the stated research question, justified by the data and compared with accepted chemistry where relevant. An evaluation must identify specific methodological weaknesses — a reagent that degrades, a reaction sensitive to temperature, a measurement with poor resolution — and propose realistic improvements rather than mentioning human error.

What each chemistry block costs

The market bands first, read in October 2026 from competitors' own published figures. EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65 an hour, Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52, Unitors from AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB, TutorChase at AED 270, BartyED at AED 650. Bestimate's Dubai table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and IB or IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with monthly estimates of AED 240 to AED 600 budget, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

Chemistry is unusually well suited to being bought as blocks rather than as open-ended weekly support, because the operations are discrete and most repair in one to three sessions. A units-and-working block is two sessions. An energetics sign block is one or two. A spectroscopy method block is two or three. A kinetics order-determination block is one. Each has a calculable price at any band and a target you can check on the next paper.

The expensive exceptions are worth naming honestly. Rebuilding organic chemistry from memorised to reasoned takes a term, because it is a change in how the student thinks rather than a procedure to learn. Rebuilding quantitative fluency where the mole concept was never secure takes a holiday block at four or five sessions a week, because fluency comes from volume. Those two are the only chemistry purchases that should run long, and a provider selling a term of general support without having identified one of them is selling attention.

IB Gram publishes no hourly rate on this page, because the right figure depends on level, stage and which block the evidence calls for. The market band lets you judge any quote including ours, and the first lesson is free. In it, ask the tutor to name the four investigation criteria with their marks and to explain the difference between the strength and the concentration of an acid. A genuine chemistry specialist answers both immediately.

Practical work, honesty and the permit position

Practical chemistry happens at school. Your child's school has the reagents, the balances, the fume cupboard and the supervision, and it runs the laboratory sessions in which investigation data is collected. No tutor in any delivery format runs experiments for a student, and an in-home tutor arriving at a Tilal Al Ghaf villa with a burette is not what in-home tutoring looks like either. What a tutor contributes is design, uncertainty and data treatment, and feedback on the student's own writing, all of which work on a shared screen.

On assessed work the boundary is firm. There are providers in this region selling completed internal assessments at published prices; submitting one is academic misconduct and the consequence falls on the student. A tutor may teach any chemistry the investigation requires, test whether a design is measurable, explain each criterion and its descriptors, teach uncertainty propagation, and read the student's own draft and say what is not working. A tutor may not write any part of it, supply data, choose the research question outright, or edit a draft into something the student did not produce.

On materials: syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, and reproducing or distributing them is copyright infringement. A tutor works from legitimately obtained material and teaches the student to read the assessment criteria themselves. We also do not describe tutors as IB examiners where current status cannot be evidenced, and examiner experience gives no access to marking, boundaries or unseen paper content.

On regulation: private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years to teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Those operating without it are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published — Khaleej Times reported the ministry did not specify the amounts — so distrust any page printing a figure. IB Gram holds no approval or accreditation from the IB, KHDA, ADEK or the Ministry of Education.

Where we tutor

Tilal Al Ghaf and the communities around it

These communities share schools and roads with Tilal Al Ghaf. For chemistry the relevant difference is how early a session can start, because calculation accuracy falls with tiredness.

Tilal Al Ghaf

Villas and townhouses around Lagoon Al Ghaf with a British-curriculum school inside the community. Pupils are often home before four, which allows an early session and a materially lower arithmetic error rate in calculation work.

DAMAC Hills

Immediate neighbour with its own school provision, so the same early-evening advantage applies. Most Diploma chemistry students from both communities arrived through IGCSE rather than the Middle Years Programme.

Dubai Sports City

Schools inside the community but training commitments consume the early evening. Chemistry suits holiday blocks here, since quantitative fluency comes from volume rather than from being explained again.

Motor City

A school inside the community and a predominantly British-curriculum cohort. Whether a Diploma chemistry student sat the Extended or Higher tier is the best single predictor of how the quantitative topics will go.

Al Barsha South

Where several IB Diploma schools sit, within a single drive outside peak hours. Students travelling there daily have a later realistic session start than those schooled locally.

Dubai Hills Estate

IB continuum provision within reach, so students from this direction arrive comfortable with processing and evaluating and lighter on three-step calculation.

Mudon

Schooling spread across the Dubailand periphery with shared transport, so arrival times vary day to day. A fixed online slot absorbs that variation in a way a tutor at a gate cannot.

Remraam

Apartment-led, with pupils travelling to Dubailand schools. Students here are often the only candidate in their year taking Higher Level chemistry, so informal advice on the mechanisms is scarce.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Diagnose by operation, not by topic

The first session works sets of questions by operation — moles, energetics, mechanisms, spectroscopy — rather than a mixed paper, because a mixed paper obscures which operations are reliable. The output is a list naming the unreliable ones, and most of them repair in one to three sessions.

  2. 02

Enforce visible working from session one

Mark schemes credit the steps, so a student who writes nothing loses an entire multi-step question when an early rounding decision propagates. Students who calculate quickly in their heads are the most affected and the most surprised. Two to three weeks of enforced working changes it permanently.

  3. 03

A free first lesson with the named tutor

One full lesson, no charge, with the person who would continue. Ask them to name the four investigation criteria and their marks, and to explain the difference between the strength and the concentration of an acid. A genuine chemistry specialist answers both immediately; much of this market cannot.

  4. 04

Put calculation work in the early slot

Tilal Al Ghaf pupils are often home before four, which makes a four-thirty start realistic. Chemistry is precision work and a tired student makes arithmetic errors rather than conceptual ones, so calculation-heavy sessions and full timed papers belong in the earliest slot available.

  5. 05

Test the investigation design before anything is booked

The chemistry trap is a change too small or too fast to measure with school apparatus, and it is decided before any solution is made up. One conversation about measurability is the most valuable hour on a component worth a fifth of the grade, and it has to happen early.

  6. 06

Keep a loss tally across papers

Categorise every lost mark as unit, sign, limiting reagent, mechanism convention, command term or genuine content gap. Those six categories cover most chemistry losses and each points to a different repair. A tally across three or four papers gives a diagnosis no single paper can.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Diagnosis by operation, with the trap named

Chemistry is built from recurring operations, each failing in a characteristic way, so we diagnose by operation rather than by topic heading. 'Struggles with calculations' is not a diagnosis; 'secure on molar mass, loses limiting reagent questions, drops units in titration work' is a three-session plan.

Mechanisms taught by electron movement

A student who memorises products performs on familiar molecules and collapses on the unfamiliar ones the Higher Level paper presents. We teach the five questions that handle any structure, plus the drawing conventions that carry marks: where a curly arrow starts, and which charges must be shown.

Sign discipline treated as its own block

A correct enthalpy magnitude with the wrong sign scores nothing, and Hess cycle sign reversal is the commonest version. Drawing the cycle before any arithmetic almost eliminates it, which makes this a one or two session repair with a visible result on the next energetics question.

Spectroscopy taught as a fixed method

Mass spectrometry, then infrared, then nuclear magnetic resonance environments, ratios and splitting, with the evidence stated before a structure is proposed. Two or three sessions and a student can approach any structure question systematically for the rest of the course.

Blocks with lengths and checkable targets

Most chemistry operations repair in one to three sessions, and we say which block and how long rather than selling open-ended weekly support. The two genuine exceptions — rebuilding organic reasoning and rebuilding quantitative fluency — are named as long purchases honestly.

Clear about the limits

Practical work stays at school. No part of an investigation written by a tutor. No home visits in the UAE. No distribution of IB papers or mark schemes. No examiner claims we cannot evidence. No approval or accreditation from the IB, KHDA, ADEK or the Ministry of Education.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Tilal Al Ghaf: your questions answered

What specifically goes wrong in IB chemistry calculations?+

Three things, and they fail differently. Unit handling, where concentration in moles per cubic decimetre meets volumes in cubic centimetres and the conversion is held in the head rather than written down. Compounding, where a multi-step calculation with no visible working loses the whole question because the mark scheme credits the steps. And the limiting reagent, where a student works from the wrong reactant and produces a clean, internally consistent answer that is entirely wrong. Each is a one or two session repair once named.

Why does my child's organic chemistry collapse on unfamiliar molecules?+

Because they learned what named reactions produce rather than reasoning from electron movement. The reasoning is five questions asked in order: where are the electron-rich and electron-poor sites, which bond is polarised and in which direction, which species is the nucleophile, what intermediate forms and is it charged, and what leaves and why. A student who asks those can handle a structure they have never seen, which is exactly what the Higher Level paper presents.

How do curly arrow conventions affect marks?+

Directly, and students under-estimate it. A curly arrow must start from a lone pair or from a bond and end where the electrons actually go; an arrow drawn from an atom rather than from its lone pair loses the mark even where the overall transformation is correct. Charges on intermediates must be shown, and partial charges should be marked where polarisation is part of the argument. These are conventions rather than chemistry, which makes them quickly teachable and quickly fixable.

Why do correct enthalpy answers score zero?+

Because the sign carries the meaning, so a correct magnitude with the wrong sign is a wrong answer rather than a partially right one. The commonest version is Hess cycle sign reversal: when a step is used in the opposite direction to the way it was given its enthalpy change reverses, and a student working algebraically reverses some and not others. Drawing the cycle before any arithmetic makes the directions visible and almost eliminates the error, in one or two sessions.

What is the difference between a strong acid and a concentrated one?+

Strength describes how completely an acid dissociates; concentration describes how much is present. A concentrated weak acid and a dilute strong acid are different things, and almost every acids question depends on the distinction somewhere. The diagnostic is one question: which has the lower pH, a dilute strong acid or a concentrated weak one, and what would you need to know to decide? A student who answers immediately from one variable has the confusion, and resolving it takes one or two sessions.

Does IB Gram visit homes in Tilal Al Ghaf for chemistry?+

No. All UAE tuition is delivered live and one-to-one over video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are a service we run only in India. Practical chemistry happens in your child's school laboratory in any case, so no tutor in any format substitutes for it. What a screen does well is calculation with every line visible, annotated spectra shared by both parties, and marked mechanisms, which is most of what a chemistry session consists of.

How should structure determination questions be approached?+

In a fixed order, which is why this is the most teachable part of the syllabus. Mass spectrometry first for the molecular mass and likely fragments. Then infrared for functional groups present and, importantly, absent. Then nuclear magnetic resonance for the number of distinct environments, the integration ratio and the splitting pattern. Each technique alone is ambiguous and the three together are usually decisive. State what each spectrum has told you before proposing any structure.

Which chemistry blocks repair fastest?+

Most of them. A units-and-visible-working block is two sessions. An energetics sign block is one or two. A limiting reagent habit is one. A spectroscopy method block is two or three. Kinetics order determination from data is one. The two genuine exceptions are rebuilding organic chemistry from memorised to reasoned, which takes a term because it changes how the student thinks, and rebuilding quantitative fluency where the mole concept was never secure, which needs a holiday block.

How should my child use chemistry past papers?+

By operation first, then by whole paper. Sets of mole questions, then energetics, then mechanisms, because a mixed paper obscures which operations are reliable. Enforce visible working throughout. Mark against the published scheme rather than a worked answer, and categorise each loss as a unit error, sign error, limiting reagent, mechanism convention, command term or genuine content gap. A tally across three or four papers gives a diagnosis no single paper can.

Why does the session time matter for chemistry?+

Because chemistry is precision work and tiredness produces arithmetic errors rather than conceptual ones. A rounding decision at step one survives to the final answer, so a session spent on multi-step calculation gets a materially better return from an alert student. Tilal Al Ghaf has a school inside the community and neighbouring communities have their own provision, so pupils are often home before four and a four-thirty start is genuinely available here.

Where does the chemistry investigation usually fail?+

At the design stage, on measurability. A student picks an interesting reaction and finds the colour change too subtle to quantify, the reaction too fast to time by hand, the temperature change inside the resolution of a school thermometer, or the yield too small to weigh reliably. The data then shows noise rather than a relationship and later writing cannot recover it. One conversation about measurability before any apparatus is booked is the most valuable hour on a component worth a fifth of the grade.

Can anything still be improved once the investigation data is collected?+

Yes, and specifically twelve of the twenty-four marks. Research design and data analysis are largely fixed once the data exists, but conclusion and evaluation each carry six marks and reward thinking rather than apparatus. A conclusion must answer the stated research question, justified by the data and compared with accepted chemistry. An evaluation must name specific methodological weaknesses — a reagent that degrades, a temperature-sensitive reaction, a poor-resolution measurement — and propose realistic improvements rather than human error.

Is Higher Level chemistry much more work than Standard Level?+

Roughly half again in tutoring hours, and the reason is structural. Higher Level deepens the treatment of most topics rather than appending separate ones, and adds transition metals, buffers, cell potentials and extended organic mechanisms. That means it cannot be prepared by learning the Standard Level course and bolting content on at the end. Whether it is worth it depends on the degree route: medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering commonly expect it, and the requirement is published on each university's course pages.

Which chemistry topics give the cheapest marks late in the course?+

The procedural ones, because each is a session or two and then permanent. Determining order of reaction from kinetics data. Balancing half-equations in acidic or basic conditions. The spectroscopy method. Qualitative-analysis recall where the syllabus includes it. Alongside those, the leakage habits: units written as a line of working, the limiting reagent stated as a separate step, and signs attached to every enthalpy value. Together those usually outweigh another month of general content revision.

What licensing applies to a chemistry tutor in Dubai?+

The MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, although no fine schedule is published, so be sceptical of pages quoting amounts. Ask to see the document rather than accepting a verbal assurance.

Name the operation, then buy the block

Chemistry allows a precise diagnosis, so ask for one. Have your child work sets of questions by operation rather than a mixed paper — moles, then energetics, then mechanisms, then spectroscopy — and the unreliable operations will be obvious within a session. Most of them repair in one to three sessions with a result you can check on the next paper: units written as a line of working, the limiting reagent stated as a step, signs attached to every enthalpy value, the spectroscopy order followed. Only two chemistry purchases should run long, and both deserve to be named honestly before you commit. Tilal Al Ghaf sessions run live and one-to-one over video at Gulf Standard Time. Practical work stays at school, we make no home visits in the UAE, and we promise no grades.
