IGCSE Science Tutor in Tilal Al Ghaf

Most families looking for an IGCSE science tutor in Tilal Al Ghaf are weighing something before they weigh tutors: separate sciences against a combined award, one board's practical assessment against another's, and which of three sciences to carry. This page compares those choices first. IB Gram teaches one-to-one, live over video, at Gulf Standard Time.

  • Award, board and tier established before the first lesson
  • Practical and alternative-to-practical papers taught explicitly
  • Revision methods compared on what actually moves marks
  • First lesson free with the tutor who would continue

Three comparisons before you compare tutors

Science at IGCSE is not one qualification but several, and a family hiring a tutor without knowing which one their child sits is guessing. Separate sciences means three IGCSEs with three sets of papers. Cambridge Combined Science 0653 is a single award across all three sciences. Cambridge Co-ordinated Science 0654 is a double award. The Pearson Edexcel Science Double Award 4SD0 is a different double award again. Content volume, paper structure, reporting and sixth-form access all differ.

So this page makes three comparisons before discussing teaching. The awards, compared on what they actually cover and what they open afterwards. The two boards, compared on how they assess practical skills, which is the difference that most affects an online-tutored student. And the three sciences, compared on how each one has to be revised, because a method that works for biology is close to useless for physics.

Tilal Al Ghaf is a good place to make the award comparison because the choice is genuinely live. The community has a British-curriculum school inside its boundary and DAMAC Hills, Dubai Sports City and Motor City all have their own provision nearby, and across those schools both awarding bodies and several award structures are in use. A pupil here may be on a combined award while a neighbour two streets away sits three separate sciences, and the two families will exchange advice that does not transfer.

The practical question is the one most often asked of an online provider, and it deserves a direct answer early. In Cambridge sciences a candidate sits either a practical test in the school laboratory or an alternative-to-practical written paper, depending on what the centre enters. In Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences there is no separate practical paper and experimental skills appear inside the two written papers. For the written versions a tutor on a screen is not disadvantaged at all; for apparatus familiarity the school is the only source and we say so.

One scheduling advantage is worth using here. Because Tilal Al Ghaf has a school inside the community and its neighbours do too, pupils are often home before four, so an early weekday session is realistic. In science that matters most for the quantitative work, where a tired pupil makes arithmetic errors rather than conceptual ones, and for full timed papers, which need an alert candidate to be a fair test.

IB Gram delivers science tuition to Tilal Al Ghaf as live one-to-one lessons over video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Practical work happens in your child's school laboratory in either case, which this page treats as a fact rather than an obstacle to be talked around.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An IGCSE science tutor is wanted at four points, and the comparison that matters differs at each. These are the stages.

Y9Ages 13-14

Year 9, choosing the award

The stage at which separate sciences or a combined route is decided, often without the family realising a decision is being made. Useful work here is written explanation and quantitative handling — rearranging, units, standard form — because the specifications assume both and teach neither explicitly.

Ask the school which award each sixth-form science route requires. Separate sciences at the higher tier are commonly expected for A Level and IB Higher Level sciences, and a combined award may not be sufficient, which is a decision easier to make at thirteen than to unwind at sixteen.

Y10Ages 14-15

Year 10, learning the specification

The year the grade is made. Content is consolidated as the school teaches it, command-term and unit discipline are built before questions lengthen, and practical-skills work can be developed rather than crammed. The marks gained per hour are higher here than at any later point.

Tilal Al Ghaf's short school run makes a four-thirty start realistic, which is unusual in this belt. Dubai school breaks also allow four or five sessions a week, which is the practical way to cover a science that started late or to build quantitative fluency.

Y11Ages 15-16

Year 11, after the mocks

The most common booking. In Cambridge sciences losses are often concentrated in one of the three papers rather than spread, and very often in the alternative-to-practical paper because nobody revised it. The first session should read the mock paper by paper rather than as a single grade.

Confirm which series the school enters and, for Cambridge, which of the six administrative zones the centre sits in, because Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for the zone and cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam otherwise.

Post16Ages 16-17

Into A Level or IB sciences

Both routes assume separate-science content and a level of quantitative fluency and extended writing that a comfortable combined pass does not demonstrate. Both also require individual investigative work assessed against criteria, which an alternative-to-practical candidate has never done.

Schools in and around Tilal Al Ghaf split at sixteen into A Levels, the IB Diploma or both, so the bridging requirement differs by destination. A short block before Year 12 is considerably cheaper than the catch-up tutoring that otherwise begins in October.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the IGCSE science topics Tilal Al Ghaf families ask about, with the revision method each actually responds to. The method differs by science, which is why a single revision plan across all three usually underperforms.

Electricity and circuits

Physics 0625 and 4PH1

Responds to worked problems rather than to notes, because circuit reasoning holds current, potential difference and resistance together. Marks go to candidates who state which quantity is constant in a given arrangement before calculating anything.

Forces and motion

Physics 0625 and 4PH1

Responds to graph practice. Candidates read values correctly and then cannot say what the gradient or the area under the line physically represents, which is where the explanation marks sit rather than in the arithmetic.

Waves, light and sound

Physics 0625 and 4PH1

Responds to drawing practice. Refraction and ray diagrams are marked on construction lines and on measuring from the normal rather than the surface, so repeated drawing beats reading about it every time.

Moles and stoichiometry

Chemistry 0620 and 4CH1

Responds only to volume of worked calculations. It recurs through titration, yield and gas-volume questions and compounds, and unit discipline between moles per cubic decimetre and per cubic centimetre costs more across a paper than conceptual gaps do.

Qualitative analysis

Chemistry 0620 and 4CH1

The one topic in all three sciences where memorisation is the correct method. Tests for cations, anions and gases with their observations are learned content, cheap marks, and reliably skipped in revision because they feel like rote work.

Organic chemistry and rates

Chemistry 0620 and 4CH1

Responds to explanation practice. Rate questions want collision-frequency reasoning rather than a restatement of the trend, and candidates lose marks describing what happens to the rate instead of explaining why particles collide more often.

Transport and respiration

Biology 0610 and 4BI1

Responds to terminology drilling. Diffusion, osmosis and active transport are distinguished in the mark scheme and conflated under time pressure, so the method that works is precise definition practice rather than reading.

Inheritance and variation

Biology 0610 and 4BI1

Responds to one technique change: drawing the genetic cross rather than reasoning in prose. Candidates who state a correct ratio without the cross lose the method marks, and the fix is a single session followed by repetition.

Enzymes and photosynthesis

Biology 0610 and 4BI1

Responds to data-interpretation practice, since these topics generate most of the graph questions. The answer wanted is the limiting factor producing the graph's shape, not a description of the shape itself.

Experimental skills

Cambridge Papers 5 and 6; within Edexcel written papers

Responds to question-type practice, because it follows a formula: name the independent, dependent and controlled variables, justify repeats, handle an anomaly, choose apparatus with appropriate resolution, name a specific source of error. The most predictable marks in the subject.

Calculations and units across the sciences

All science syllabuses

Responds to volume and to enforced visible working. A science problem is frequently a mathematics problem in disguise, which is why a diagnostic has to test the quantitative handling separately from the content knowledge.

Command terms in science answers

All science syllabuses

Responds to marked-and-rewritten practice rather than to being explained. 'State', 'describe', 'explain', 'suggest' and 'compare' carry different expectations, and teaching a candidate to answer the verb recovers marks across every topic at once.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Tilal Al Ghaf families run IGCSE science with us, all live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time. Which fits depends on the award, the tier and how many sciences need attention.

One science weekly, on the right specification

One tutor, one protected slot, working from the award, syllabus code and tier your child actually sits. Practical-skills work is built in from the first term rather than crammed, which matters where the award sets a separate practical or alternative-to-practical paper.

  • Planned from the award, code and tier
  • Practical-skills questions used from the first term
  • Problem set between sessions, marked in the next
  • Written note the same evening after each lesson

Method-matched revision blocks

Each science responds to a different method, so a block is built around the method rather than the topic list: worked problems for physics, calculation volume for chemistry, terminology and data interpretation for biology. A single revision plan applied across all three is why so much revision produces so little.

  • Physics by worked problems and drawing practice
  • Chemistry by calculation volume with working shown
  • Biology by terminology drilling and data questions
  • One full timed paper every fortnight

Two sciences, one tutor, consecutive slots

Common in Year 11 where physics and chemistry are both weak, because the shared cause is frequently quantitative rather than subject-specific. A single tutor across both will see that, whereas two tutors each diagnose within their own subject. Still two separate one-to-one lessons.

  • Back-to-back individual lessons, never a group
  • Shared diagnosis of the quantitative handling
  • One block to protect in the household calendar
  • Usual pairing: 0625 with 0620, or 4PH1 with 4CH1

Holiday and Ramadan-adjusted blocks

Dubai school breaks allow four or five sessions a week, which is the practical way to cover a science that fell behind. Practical-skills work and qualitative analysis both suit a concentrated block. Ramadan sessions move to the earlier afternoon or post-Iftar and shorten rather than stop.

  • Four to five sessions a week in school breaks
  • Good for practical skills and learned content
  • Post-Iftar scheduling available in Ramadan
  • Shorter sessions in preference to skipped weeks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Tilal Al Ghaf

01

Separate sciences or a combined award: the real comparison

This is the decision that shapes a pupil's options at sixteen and it is frequently made on timetable convenience. The four structures in use are not interchangeable: separate sciences gives three IGCSEs, Cambridge Co-ordinated Science 0654 and the Pearson Edexcel Science Double Award 4SD0 each give a double award, and Cambridge Combined Science 0653 gives a single award. Content volume per science descends across that list and so does what it opens afterwards.

The first thing to be clear about is what a combined award is not. It is not an easier version of the same assessment. Content per science is reduced, but the papers are marked to the same standard with the same command-term precision and the same calculation discipline. Families told the course is lighter frequently conclude it is easier, and then find that a pupil who was going to find three sciences hard finds a combined award hard too, just across less material.

The second is what it costs in options. A Level and IB Higher Level sciences commonly assume separate-science content, and a pupil arriving from a combined award has a genuine content gap rather than a pacing problem. That is bridgeable with a block before Year 12, but it has to be planned rather than discovered. Ask the school directly what their own sixth form expects, because the answer is specific to the school and is usually more precise than any general advice.

The third is the honest case for a combined award, which is real. A pupil who would carry three sciences badly, at the cost of their other subjects, is better served by one or two awards done well. Three separate sciences at the higher tier is a substantial load, and a pupil whose intended route needs no science beyond sixteen gains nothing from carrying it. The mistake is not choosing a combined award; it is choosing one without checking what it closes.

The two boards compared on practical assessment

This is the comparison that most affects a family considering online tutoring, so it deserves precision rather than reassurance. The two awarding bodies assess experimental skills in genuinely different ways, and that changes what a tutor can and cannot contribute.

In Cambridge sciences a candidate sits either a practical test, conducted in the school laboratory under exam conditions, or an alternative-to-practical written paper in which experimental skills are examined on paper. Which one depends on what the centre enters, so ask the exams officer. The alternative-to-practical paper is a written paper and a tutor on a screen is not disadvantaged by it at all; in fact it is among the most teachable papers in the whole qualification, because the question types follow a formula.

In Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences there is no separate practical paper. Experimental skills appear inside the two written papers, woven among the content questions. That is easier to prepare for incidentally and harder to target deliberately, because there is no single paper to practise. The consequence for tutoring is that experimental-skills work has to be threaded through the year rather than treated as a block before the exam.

The practical test is the only version where a screen genuinely loses something, and the loss is apparatus familiarity rather than knowledge. A candidate who knows before walking in that they will record readings to a consistent precision, tabulate with units in the headings and plot with a sensible scale will score better than one discovering those expectations during the exam, and that preparation is talk and marked practice. What a tutor cannot supply is the feel of a burette or the look of a failed reaction, and the school provides that in either case.

03

The three sciences compared by how they must be revised

Families apply one revision plan across all three sciences and then conclude that revision does not work. The plan is the problem. The three sciences reward different methods, and a method that produces results in biology produces almost nothing in physics.

Physics has the lowest content volume and the highest reasoning demand, so it responds to worked problems and to drawing practice rather than to notes. A pupil who reads a physics textbook chapter has learned very little; the same pupil who works twenty circuit problems has learned a great deal. Making notes is close to the least efficient physics revision available, which is unfortunate because it is the most popular.

Chemistry is quantitative and sequential, so it responds to volume of worked calculations with visible working. The mole concept recurs through titration, yield, gas volumes and rates, and fluency there carries everything downstream. The one chemistry topic where memorisation is the correct method is qualitative analysis, which is pure learned content and the cheapest marks on the paper, and which pupils skip precisely because it feels like rote work.

Biology has the highest content volume and the lowest mathematical demand, and it responds to terminology drilling and data-interpretation practice. Diffusion, osmosis and active transport are separated in the mark scheme and conflated under pressure, and precise definition practice fixes that. Inheritance responds to one technique change — drawing the cross rather than reasoning in prose — and enzyme and photosynthesis questions respond to graph work. Biology is also the science where flashcards genuinely earn their place, which is not true of the other two.

Reading the mock by paper, not by grade

  • Ask for the mark on each paper, not just the subject grade
  • Concentrated losses in the practical-skills paper are the commonest pattern
  • Weak multiple choice with sound theory means thin content
  • Strong multiple choice with weak theory means a command-term problem
  • The paper breakdown often reduces what a family needs to buy

A single science grade hides the information you need. In Cambridge sciences a candidate sits a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical or alternative-to-practical paper, and the losses are frequently concentrated in one of them rather than spread across the subject. A grade reports the sum and tells you nothing about which.

The pattern we see most often is a concentrated loss on the alternative-to-practical paper, because it is the paper nobody revises. A family reading a single grade concludes the science is weak and buys a term of content teaching, which does not touch the paper the marks were lost on. A family reading the papers separately buys three sessions on variables, repeats, anomalies and apparatus resolution and recovers most of it.

The second common pattern is a weak multiple-choice performance against a reasonable theory paper, which usually means the content is thin but the written technique is fine. The reverse — strong multiple choice, weak theory — usually means content is secure and extended answers are not, which is a command-term problem and responds to marked-and-rewritten practice within weeks.

So the request to make of the school is specific: not the grade but the mark on each paper, and ideally the question-level breakdown. Most schools will provide it if asked. That single piece of information frequently changes what a family should buy, and it costs nothing. Doing this is also why an honest first session sometimes ends with us saying that three sessions will do rather than a term.

05

Comparing the bridge into A Level and into IB sciences

Both sixth-form routes are available within a reasonable drive of Tilal Al Ghaf, and the bridging requirement differs, which is worth knowing before the summer after the series disappears unused. In both cases the summer block is the cheapest intervention available at that point and the one almost nobody books, because the exams are over and nothing feels urgent.

Into A Level sciences, the gap is depth and mathematical pace. A Level physics and chemistry go considerably further than IGCSE within the same topics, and both assume algebraic fluency from the first week. Practical work is assessed through a separate practical endorsement across many activities rather than one piece of coursework, so a candidate who sat an alternative-to-practical paper has laboratory expectations to learn but no single high-stakes piece to prepare.

Into IB Higher Level sciences, the gap is depth plus the investigation. Every IB science requires an individual scientific investigation marked out of 24 across four criteria and worth 20% of the grade, and an IGCSE candidate who only ever sat an alternative-to-practical paper has never designed anything. Teaching variables, controls, uncertainty and evaluation before Year 12 begins means their first investigation is not also their first attempt at the skills it needs.

Either way the content gap is larger for a pupil arriving from a combined award than from separate sciences, and it is a genuine content gap rather than a matter of pace. Six to eight sessions covers the separate-sciences case; a pupil from a combined award needs longer and should plan for it rather than discovering it in October. Ask the receiving school what they assume, because they will tell you and it is more precise than anything a tutoring page can say.

06

What the awards cost to support

Start with the monthly figures rather than the hourly ones, because an award is a year-long commitment and no family buys a single science hour. Bestimate's Dubai estimates, read in October 2026, run AED 240 to AED 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, each of those per subject supported rather than per child. The hourly ladder sitting behind those bands, taken the same month from the providers' own published pages, climbs steeply: Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52, EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65, Unitors from AED 150 for IGCSE, TutorChase at AED 270, BartyED at AED 650. Bestimate's table also puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. For a Tilal Al Ghaf family the spread matters less than the multiplier, and the multiplier was fixed when the award was chosen.

The award structure changes the arithmetic more than anything else, which is rarely mentioned when the award is chosen. A pupil on three separate sciences who needs support in two is a two-subject commitment: at the mid band, roughly AED 1,200 to AED 2,400 a month for weekly sessions in each. A pupil on a combined or double award is a single commitment, because one tutor can cover the reduced content across the sciences in that award. For a family where budget is a real constraint, that is a legitimate consideration in the award decision and nobody raises it at the time.

The second arithmetic point is the practical paper. Where the award sets an alternative-to-practical paper, three sessions on variables, repeats, anomalies and apparatus resolution covers it, which is a small, fixed and well-defined purchase. That is one of the best-value blocks in IGCSE science and it is almost never bought, because it is not a topic and therefore does not appear on anyone's list of things to revise.

IB Gram publishes no hourly rate on this page, because the right figure depends on award, board, tier, how many sciences and how many weeks remain. The market band lets you judge any quote including ours, and the first lesson is free. In it, ask the tutor which papers your child's award sets and how practical skills are assessed on that board. A specialist answers both immediately.

Which science to drop, if one has to go

  • Check the destination requirement first; it is published, not inferred
  • Physics suits reasoning over memorising, with high maths demand
  • Chemistry suits precision with numbers and punishes a weak foundation
  • Biology suits strong memory and written discipline
  • Two sciences done well usually beat three done poorly

Year 9 option blocks sometimes force a choice, and the decision is often made on which teacher a pupil likes. Two better criteria exist and neither takes long to apply.

The first is the destination. If any intended sixth-form or degree route needs a particular science, that settles it, and the requirement is published by schools and universities rather than inferred. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary routes commonly want chemistry, frequently with biology. Engineering and physics routes commonly want physics with mathematics. Life sciences generally want biology with chemistry. A pupil dropping chemistry while aiming at medicine has usually made the wrong trade and will discover it at sixteen.

The second is load capacity against profile. Physics has the lowest content volume and the highest reasoning and mathematical demand, so it suits a pupil who reasons well and dislikes memorising. Chemistry is quantitative and sequential, so it suits a pupil who is organised and precise with numbers, and punishes a weak foundation more than the others because so much sits downstream of the mole concept. Biology has the highest content volume and the lowest mathematical demand, so it suits a pupil with a strong memory and written discipline.

Where the destination leaves a genuine choice, matching the profile produces a better grade than following a preference for a teacher, and a better grade in two sciences usually serves a pupil better than three mediocre ones. That is the conversation to have in Year 9 rather than Year 11, and it is one a tutor should be willing to have even when the honest answer reduces the number of subjects they might be asked to teach.

08

Permits, papers and the claims to distrust

This heading promises claims to distrust, and the first is the one nobody states out loud: that the person you are about to hire is lawfully permitted to teach your child. Private tutoring in the UAE is permit-regulated, and eligibility is far broader than parents assume. It covers teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students, so the useful question is never whether a tutor could hold a permit but whether they actually do. The instrument is Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time through its app, website and e-services. No fee and two working days means a provider who has not applied has decided not to, and that single fact filters a shortlist faster than any claim about which science award they specialise in.

The penalty for going without one is where the internet starts inventing. What the law actually says is that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws, and that is the whole of it. Khaleej Times reported that the ministry did not specify the fine amounts or detail the penalties, and the figure circulating online could not be verified, which is why no dirham amount appears anywhere on this page. Read a provider who prints a penalty figure the way you would read one who puts a number on next June's result: both offer a precision that has been invented to create urgency, and neither has a published source standing behind it.

On materials, the limit is firm. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson, and reproducing or distributing them is copyright infringement. A tutor works through questions from legitimately obtained material and teaches the candidate to read a mark scheme themselves, which matters in science because the marks sit in named variables, units and construction lines rather than in the final figure.

Two further claims to treat sceptically. Examiner status, which we do not use as a selling point for anyone whose current status cannot be evidenced and which gives no access to marking, boundaries or unseen papers. And any promise about a specific result, which we will not make because nobody controls it. What we will give you after a mock read paper by paper is a categorised account of where the marks went and an honest view of what the remaining weeks can close. IB Gram holds no approval or accreditation from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson.

Where we tutor

Tilal Al Ghaf and the communities around it

These communities share schools and roads with Tilal Al Ghaf, and between them they use both awarding bodies and several award structures. That is what makes a neighbour's advice unreliable here.

Tilal Al Ghaf

Villas and townhouses around Lagoon Al Ghaf with a British-curriculum school inside the community. Pupils are often home before four, which allows an early session — valuable for quantitative work and full timed papers.

DAMAC Hills

Immediate neighbour with its own school provision and the same early-evening advantage. The two communities' science school clusters overlap almost entirely, but the awards in use do not necessarily match.

Dubai Sports City

Schools inside the community, but training commitments consume the early evening the short commute creates. Science here is more often run as a holiday intensive block, which suits practical-skills work well.

Motor City

A school inside the community and a predominantly British-curriculum cohort, so the science load is heavy and two sciences are often needed at once in Year 11.

Mudon

Schooling spread across the Dubailand periphery with shared transport, so arrival times vary day to day and the realistic start is later. A fixed online slot absorbs that variation.

Remraam

Apartment-led, with pupils travelling to Dubailand schools. Candidates here are often the only pupil in their year on a particular award, so informal information about the papers is scarce.

Arabian Ranches 3

Newer phases a short drive north where most secondary pupils travel out. A high proportion changed school recently, which is when award and tier information most often gets lost.

Town Square

A younger demographic with most pupils below IGCSE age, so Year 9 work on explanation and quantitative handling is the main request rather than exam-year support.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Establish the award, not just the subject

Email the exams officer for the award structure, the awarding body, the syllabus code and the tier, plus whether the centre enters a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. Those answers determine the whole plan, and in a neighbourhood where several structures are in use they cannot be assumed from a neighbour's experience.

  2. 02

Ask for the mock marks paper by paper

Not the subject grade but the mark on each paper, and the question-level breakdown if the school has it. Losses in Cambridge sciences are often concentrated in one paper rather than spread, and very often in the alternative-to-practical paper, which no amount of content teaching would have touched.

  3. 03

Match the method to the science

Physics by worked problems and drawing, chemistry by calculation volume with working shown, biology by terminology drilling and data interpretation. A single revision plan across all three is why so much revision produces so little, and the fix costs nothing but a change of approach.

  4. 04

A free first lesson with the named tutor

One full lesson, no charge, with the person who would continue. Ask them which papers your child's award sets and how practical skills are assessed on that board. A specialist answers instantly. Then watch whether they found where the marks actually went.

  5. 05

    Put the quantitative work early

Tilal Al Ghaf pupils are often home before four, so a four-thirty start is realistic here. That matters for chemistry calculation and physics problem work, where a tired pupil makes arithmetic errors rather than conceptual ones, and for full timed papers, which need an alert candidate to be a fair test.

  6. 06

Reassess by paper at each mock

Each mock is read paper by paper and compared with the last, so the plan follows evidence rather than habit. If one paper has moved and another has not, the hours get reallocated. If a science is secure we say so and stop rather than rolling a session forward with no target.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The award comparison made before the hours are sold

Four structures are in use and they differ in content, in reporting and in what they open at sixteen. We set out the honest case for a combined award as well as against one, because a pupil who would carry three sciences badly is better served by fewer done well.

Practical assessment explained board by board

Cambridge sets a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper; Edexcel assesses experimental skills inside the written papers. That distinction decides what a tutor can contribute, and the alternative-to-practical paper is among the most teachable papers in the whole qualification.

Revision method matched to the science

Note-making is close to the least efficient physics revision available and among the most useful for biology. Applying one plan across all three sciences is the commonest reason revision produces nothing, and changing it costs a family nothing at all.

Diagnosis paper by paper, not by grade

A single science grade is a sum that hides where the marks went. Reading the mock paper by paper regularly shows a concentrated loss in the paper nobody revised, which turns a term of content teaching into three well-aimed sessions.

The bridging block named in advance

A pupil arriving at A Level or IB Higher Level sciences from a combined award has a genuine content gap, and an alternative-paper candidate going into the IB has never designed an investigation. Both are cheap to fix in the summer and expensive to discover in October.

Clear about the limits

Practical work stays at school. No home visits in the UAE. No distribution of awarding-body papers or mark schemes. No examiner claims we cannot evidence. No promises about results. No approval or accreditation from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, because we hold none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Tilal Al Ghaf: your questions answered

Do the papers get marked more gently on a combined award?+

No — the award is lighter in volume and identical in standard, which is a distinction families regularly miss. Content per science is reduced, but the papers are marked with the same command-term precision and the same calculation discipline, so a pupil who would find three sciences hard will find a combined award hard too, across less material. The real difference is what it opens at sixteen: A Level and IB Higher Level sciences commonly assume separate-science content, so a bridging block may be needed.

Which IGCSE science award gives the best sixth-form access?+

Separate sciences, directly, because A Level and IB Higher Level courses commonly assume that content. Cambridge Co-ordinated Science 0654 and the Pearson Edexcel Science Double Award 4SD0 are each double awards with substantial content and are often sufficient, while Cambridge Combined Science 0653 is the most reduced and more often needs bridging. Ask your own school's sixth form what it assumes, because the answer is specific to the school and more precise than general advice.

How are practical skills assessed in each board's IGCSE sciences?+

Cambridge sets either a practical test in the school laboratory under exam conditions or an alternative-to-practical written paper, depending on what the centre enters, so ask the exams officer which. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences have no separate practical component and assess experimental skills inside the two written papers. That changes tutoring: the Cambridge alternative paper is a highly teachable block, while Edexcel's experimental questions have to be threaded through the year.

Does IB Gram offer in-home science tutoring in Tilal Al Ghaf?+

No. All UAE tuition is delivered live and one-to-one over video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are a service we run only in India. Practical laboratory work happens at school in either case, so no tutor in any format substitutes for apparatus familiarity. For the written and practical-skills papers a screen costs nothing, because the work is marked questions, worked calculations with visible steps and annotated diagrams on a shared display.

Why does my child's revision not move their science marks?+

Most often because one method is being applied to three sciences that reward different ones. Note-making is close to the least efficient physics revision available, because physics has low content volume and high reasoning demand and responds to worked problems. Chemistry responds to volume of calculations with visible working. Biology, with the highest content volume and lowest mathematical demand, is the one science where flashcards genuinely earn their place. Changing the method costs nothing.

Should I ask for the mock marks paper by paper?+

Yes, and it is the single most useful request you can make. A subject grade is a sum that hides where the marks went, and in Cambridge sciences the losses are frequently concentrated in one paper rather than spread. The commonest pattern is a heavy loss on the alternative-to-practical paper, because it is the paper nobody revises, and a term of content teaching would not have touched it. Three well-aimed sessions often recovers most of it instead.

Which science should my child drop if the option block forces a choice?+

Start with the destination, which is published rather than inferred: medicine, dentistry and pharmacy routes commonly want chemistry, often with biology; engineering and physics want physics with mathematics; life sciences generally want biology with chemistry. Where the destination leaves a genuine choice, match the profile — physics for reasoning over memorising, chemistry for precision with numbers, biology for memory and written discipline. Two sciences done well usually serve a pupil better than three done poorly.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper and how do you prepare for it?+

A Cambridge written paper examining experimental skills on paper rather than in a laboratory, sat where the centre enters it instead of the practical test. It follows a formula: identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables, justify repeat readings, spot and handle an anomaly, choose apparatus with appropriate resolution, name a specific source of error rather than human error, and read a scale or graph accurately. Three sessions covers it, which makes it among the best-value blocks in IGCSE science.

How does the award structure change what tutoring costs?+

More than anything else, and nobody mentions it when the award is chosen. Three separate sciences with two weak subjects is a two-subject commitment, roughly AED 1,200 to AED 2,400 a month at the mid market band read in October 2026. A combined or double award is a single commitment, because one tutor can cover the reduced content across the sciences in that award. For a family where budget is a genuine constraint, that belongs in the award decision.

What should my child do in the summer after IGCSE science?+

A bridging block, and the shape depends on the destination. Into A Level sciences the gap is depth and mathematical pace, so six to eight sessions from separate sciences usually suffices. Into IB Higher Level sciences there is the investigation as well: every IB science requires an individual investigation marked out of 24 and worth 20% of the grade, and a candidate who only ever sat an alternative-to-practical paper has never designed anything. A pupil from a combined award needs longer in either case.

Can one tutor cover all three sciences on a combined award?+

Usually yes, and that is one of the practical advantages of a combined or double award. Content per science is reduced, so a single competent science tutor can cover the whole award rather than a family needing three specialists. On three separate sciences at the higher tier the opposite applies: the content depth in each makes a specialist worth having, particularly in chemistry where the quantitative work is unforgiving and in physics where the explanation demand is highest.

Why does session timing matter for IGCSE science?+

Because the quantitative work is precision work. A tired pupil makes arithmetic errors rather than conceptual ones, and in chemistry a rounding decision at the first step of a multi-step calculation survives to the final answer. Full timed papers are also only a fair test with an alert candidate. Tilal Al Ghaf has a school inside the community and neighbours with their own provision, so pupils are often home before four and a four-thirty start is genuinely available here.

Which exam series does a Tilal Al Ghaf science candidate sit?+

Cambridge runs June and November, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Those are what UAE candidates use. The February and March series is offered to India only, so any UAE-facing page quoting a February window is describing a different country. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for the zone, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam otherwise.

Will a tutor provide past papers for the sciences?+

No. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson, and reproducing or distributing them is copyright infringement. A tutor works through questions from legitimately obtained material and teaches your child to read a mark scheme themselves. In science that matters particularly, because the marks sit in named variables, units and construction lines rather than in the final figure, and a candidate who sees that writes differently next time.

What licensing applies to a science tutor in Dubai?+

The MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, although no fine schedule is published, so be sceptical of pages quoting amounts. Ask to see the document rather than accepting an assurance.

Settle the award, then read the papers

Two requests to the school decide most of this. Ask for the award structure, the awarding body, the syllabus code, the tier, and whether the centre enters a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. Then ask for the most recent mock marks paper by paper rather than as a subject grade, because the losses are frequently concentrated in one paper and very often in the one nobody revised. With those in hand you can judge any tutor in two minutes, and you may well find that three well-aimed sessions do what a term of content teaching would not. Tilal Al Ghaf sessions run live and one-to-one over video at Gulf Standard Time. Practical work stays at school, we make no home visits in the UAE, and we promise no grades.
