IB Chemistry Tutor in JLT

The price of an IB chemistry tutor in JLT tells you almost nothing on its own, because an hour of chemistry can mean six different things. This page is written around the money: what each published dirham band in Dubai actually buys, which parts of the chemistry course the spending should go to, and the five places a Jumeirah Lakes Towers family reliably wastes it. Lessons run online over live video with a shared whiteboard, and the first one is free.

  • Every dirham figure here is attributed to the provider that published it
  • Chemistry specialists matched by level, with mechanism work as a named skill
  • Lessons run online over live video; nothing is charged for travel
  • One free trial lesson, no payment and no card details taken

Why two chemistry tutors at the same hourly rate are not the same purchase

A family in Jumeirah Lakes Towers comparing chemistry tutors is usually comparing two numbers on two websites, and the numbers are not describing the same product. One AED 200 hour is a tutor reteaching last week's lesson from a textbook. Another AED 200 hour is a specialist reading your child's marked Paper 2, naming the three command terms that cost the marks, and rebuilding one organic mechanism until the student can draw the curly arrows without prompting. Those are different purchases at an identical price, and nothing on either website tells you which you are buying.

That matters more in chemistry than in most subjects, because chemistry marks are lost in a small number of very specific places. Organic mechanisms. Equilibrium reasoning that has to be argued rather than calculated. Energetics sign conventions. Data-based questions where an unfamiliar table has to be interpreted rather than recalled. Bonding explanations that describe a model without saying which model is being used and why. A tutor who covers the syllabus broadly will spend your money on the ninety per cent of the course your child can already do.

The second reason to start from cost is that this search cluster refuses to. Of the Dubai tutoring pages reviewed in October 2026, three published no hourly figure at all, two quoted in US dollars, and one of them contradicted its own prices between two sections of the same page. The best-ranking page in the set asks the price question in its own FAQ list and then declines to answer it. So the figures on this page are published competitor rates with the provider named and the month they were read, which is information you can check rather than a rate card you have to trust.

Being honest about our own side of it: IB Gram does not publish a price list on these pages, because the rate depends on level and on what the brief actually needs, and a single number would mislead you. What we do publish is the market, the comparison, and the free trial lesson that lets you judge an hour before paying for one. We also do not sell home visits anywhere in the UAE. Visiting tuition is a service we run only in India, and the in-home dirham figures quoted further down are other providers' rates, included because the comparison is the argument.

The rest of the page follows the money. What an hour contains at each published band. Where the chemistry course actually eats hours. The five ways a JLT budget leaks. A term-by-term map of a two-year Diploma spend. The formats compared for a tower address. The extras nobody lists until the invoice. And the two rules, one about permits and one about academic honesty, that quietly change what you should be willing to pay for.

At a glance

  • Three of six reviewed Dubai competitor pages publish no hourly price at all
  • Organic mechanisms and equilibrium reasoning are where chemistry hours are worth most
  • The in-home premium in Dubai is published at AED 180 to 500, travel included
  • Marking between sessions is inside some rates and billed separately in others
  • A free trial lesson is the only reliable way to see which hour you are buying
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What a chemistry hour should cost depends partly on which programme your child is in, because the work is different. A Middle Years student needs criterion-aware science support; a Diploma student in the final year needs component-level examination work, which is the most expensive thing on the market and the most worth paying for.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Sciences are assessed against four criteria each marked out of eight, covering knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Chemistry usually sits inside an integrated sciences course rather than standing alone, so the quantity of formal chemical calculation a student has met by MYP 5 varies a great deal between schools.

For a JLT family the cost question at this stage is whether to spend at all. Middle Years science support is cheaper per hour than Diploma work and is often better value, because fixing mole calculations and bonding language at fourteen removes the expensive remedial work at seventeen. A short block before the Diploma choice is made costs less than a year of catching up afterwards.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Chemistry sits in Group 4 at Standard or Higher Level. The current guide organises content around structure and reactivity rather than around traditional topic headings, assessed through a multiple-choice paper, a data-based paper, an extended-response paper and an internally assessed scientific investigation worth a fifth of the grade.

Diploma chemistry is the most expensive tutoring any JLT family buys, and the spending should be unevenly distributed across the two years rather than spread as a flat weekly cost. The expensive terms are the one containing the investigation and the one before the examinations. The cheap terms are the two in between, where a short monthly review is usually enough.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Two or more Diploma courses taken alongside a career-related study, a reflective project and a core of personal and professional skills. Where chemistry is taken inside it, the course content and the assessment are the same as for a Diploma candidate, including the scientific investigation and the three written papers.

Few Dubai schools run this route. If your child is on it, budget for chemistry as though it were a Diploma subject, because it is, but expect the surrounding timetable to give fewer deadline reminders. The investigation is the item that slips, and a slipped investigation is the most expensive thing to rescue late.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The route in from IGCSE

British-curriculum schools around JLT run Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620, Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry 4CH1, or chemistry inside a co-ordinated or double award. Each ends in terminal written papers, with an alternative-to-practical component in the Cambridge route, and covers moles, bonding and basic organic chemistry at a descriptive level.

The step from IGCSE to Diploma chemistry is the cheapest problem to fix and the one families most often pay to fix late. IGCSE treats bonding and energetics descriptively; the Diploma asks which model is being applied and why. A six-session bridging block in the summer before Year 12 costs a fraction of a remedial year and is the single best-value chemistry spend available to a JLT family.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry hours are not evenly valuable. The list below names the parts of the course where paid time pays back, with the places marks leave the page, so you can direct the spending at a component instead of buying general chemistry help by the hour.

Structure 1: particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

The mole concept, formulae, empirical and molecular determination, solution concentration and the ideal gas relationship. Cheap to fix and expensive to leave: almost every later calculation in the course runs through a mole step, so a student shaky here loses marks in topics they otherwise understand. Two or three focused hours usually settles it.

Structure 2: models of bonding and structure

SL and HL

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces, Lewis formulae, shapes and polarity, and at Higher Level formal charge and molecular orbital ideas. Marks go on explanations that describe a property without naming the bonding model used. This is argument practice rather than content revision, which means it needs a tutor rather than a textbook.

Structure 3: classification of matter

SL and HL

Periodicity, trends down groups and across periods, and an introduction to the functional groups and homologous series that organic chemistry then builds on. Students lose marks by stating a trend without a reason, and by explaining periodicity through one factor when the mark scheme requires two competing ones.

Reactivity 1: what drives reactions

SL and HL

Energetics and thermochemistry: enthalpy changes, calorimetry, bond enthalpies, Hess cycles and at Higher Level entropy and Gibbs energy. The reliable loss is sign convention, closely followed by Hess cycle arithmetic where one arrow is reversed and not negated. Highly trainable, and worth paying for before the first mock rather than after it.

Reactivity 2: how much, how fast, how far

SL and HL

Reaction rates, equilibrium, acids and bases, buffers at Higher Level, and the quantitative treatment of each. Equilibrium questions are argued rather than calculated, which is where strong mathematical students drop marks. The command term decides the answer shape, and students who write the correct chemistry under the wrong command term score poorly.

Reactivity 3: mechanisms of chemical change

SL and HL

Oxidation and reduction, electrochemistry, and organic reaction mechanisms with the full curly-arrow treatment at Higher Level. This is the most expensive part of the course in tutoring hours and the part most worth buying, because mechanisms cannot be memorised usefully and have to be drawn repeatedly with feedback on each attempt.

Paper 1A: multiple choice

SL and HL

Whole-syllabus multiple choice with no credit for working, sat with a data booklet and no calculator in some configurations. It rewards pace, elimination and confident unit reasoning. Students who have only practised long-form questions run out of time, and the fix is timed sets rather than more content, which makes it one of the cheapest components to improve.

Paper 1B: data-based questions

SL and HL

Questions built on unfamiliar data and experimental contexts, drawing on the skills tools rather than on recall. It asks the student to read a method, judge it, process data and comment on a graph. It cannot be revised from a textbook, which is precisely why it is worth paid hours: the skill only develops against feedback.

Paper 2: extended response

SL and HL

Short and long written questions mixing calculation with explanation. Command terms carry the marks, and Higher Level questions chain more steps than Standard Level ones. The most common expensive mistake is buying content revision when the marks are being lost to answer shape, which is a different and much shorter piece of work.

The scientific investigation

SL and HL, internally assessed

An individual investigation marked against four criteria out of twenty-four marks and carrying a fifth of the subject grade. It is the single largest block of tutoring hours most chemistry students need, and the cost rises steeply the later it starts, because a question that cannot produce a trend has to be rebuilt from the beginning.

Practical and data skills

SL and HL

Experimental technique, spreadsheet and graphing work, and the mathematics the course assumes, all examined inside Paper 1B and assessed inside the investigation. Because they are never a separate revision topic, they are the thing students skip, and deliberate practice on them returns more marks per paid hour than any content topic.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

The three formats below are priced differently in the Dubai market and buy different things. All three run online over live video with a shared whiteboard, and the differences between them are about what the hour contains rather than about where anybody sits.

Weekly one-to-one, the standing cost

A fixed weekly slot running alongside the school's scheme of work, used for the week's marked problems and the topic the class is currently in. This is the predictable line in a household budget and the one families over-buy, because the middle terms of the Diploma rarely need a full weekly hour of chemistry.

  • Sixty or ninety minutes at the same time each week
  • Marked work read before the answer is discussed
  • Annotated whiteboard saved and sent after each session
  • Worth reducing to fortnightly in the quieter middle terms

Mechanism and component blocks

A short run of sessions aimed at one thing: organic mechanisms, equilibrium argument, energetics sign conventions, or Paper 1B data skills. Blocks are the highest-value chemistry spend because they end when the error pattern changes rather than running indefinitely, so the cost is bounded before you start.

  • Six to eight sessions on a single named weakness
  • Timed question sets before the session, reviewed inside it
  • An error log so the end point is visible rather than guessed
  • Priced as a block, which makes the total knowable up front

Investigation supervision, bought early

Scheduled support across the months the scientific investigation is written, structured around the four criteria. Bought early it is a handful of hours. Bought late, after a research question has failed to produce a trend, it is a rebuild, and the rebuild is where chemistry tutoring budgets most often double.

  • One viability hour before any apparatus is touched
  • Criterion-by-criterion written feedback on the student's own drafts
  • Separate attention to evaluation, which students systematically underwrite
  • Feedback given in writing so the school can see the support was legitimate

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in JLT

01

What an hour of IB Chemistry actually contains at each published band

Lead with the monthly number rather than the hourly one, because that is the figure a household budget is built on. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates, for a single weekly hour, run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist examination-year work. Packages seen in the market sit around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those are the numbers to compare.

Convert them back to hours and the published spread becomes visible. EdFlik advertises online tuition from AED 45 to 65 an hour; Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to 52. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase lists AED 270. Bestimate puts specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level work at AED 200 to 450 and above, and BartyED's premium named tutors at AED 650. In-home one-to-one is published at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and AED 200 to 500 by home tutors generally, with travel inside the rate.

The useful question is not which band is cheapest but what each one contains. At the bottom, the hour is usually a general tutor working through the textbook chapter the class has just covered, which is reteaching rather than diagnosis. In the middle band the tutor knows the syllabus and can name the components. At the top, you are paying for component-level work and for someone who will read a marked script before the session. The step that matters for chemistry is the one into the middle band, because mechanism feedback requires subject knowledge the budget band does not reliably have.

Ask three questions of any quote, whatever the number attached to it. Is marking between sessions inside the rate or billed separately? Is the rate per sixty minutes or per lesson, and how long is a lesson? And what happens to the fee if you stop after one session? The answers move the real cost more than the headline rate does, and the providers who answer them crisply are usually the ones worth hiring.

Where chemistry hours pay back, component by component

Spending evenly across a syllabus is the most common way to waste money on chemistry. The course does not lose marks evenly. A student can be secure across most of structure and reactivity and give away a grade in two identifiable places, and those two places are where paid hours belong. The rest the school teaches well enough, and paying to hear it again is paying for reassurance.

The highest return per hour is organic mechanisms. They cannot be memorised in any useful way, because the examination asks the student to apply the pattern to a molecule they have not seen. The only training that works is drawing them repeatedly with someone correcting the arrows, the charges and the intermediates on each attempt. That is a feedback loop, and feedback loops are the one thing a textbook, a video and a group class all fail to provide.

The second highest is Paper 1B data work, for the same reason in a different disguise. The paper presents an unfamiliar method and asks the student to judge it, process the numbers and comment on the pattern. There is nothing to revise. The skill grows only against worked feedback, and it is examined in both papers and assessed inside the investigation, so improvement there pays three times.

The lowest return per paid hour is content recall. Periodicity trends, functional group names, the list of intermolecular forces: all of it is in the student's notes and all of it can be drilled alone with a reliable self-test routine. If a tutor is spending your hour on recall, you are paying specialist rates for something a flashcard app does better. The table below prices the components by how much a paid hour moves them, which is a more useful ranking than the weightings alone.

03

Five ways a JLT chemistry budget leaks

The first leak is buying the subject instead of the component. A parent books chemistry help because the grade dropped, the tutor starts at the beginning of the syllabus, and six weeks go by before anyone looks at the marked script that would have identified the problem in twenty minutes. The fix costs nothing: send the last two marked assessments before the first session and insist the trial lesson starts there.

The second is paying for a group class in a subject that needs individual correction. Group tuition is genuinely cheaper per student and genuinely works for content delivery. It does not work for mechanisms, because eight students drawing eight different wrong arrows cannot each be corrected inside an hour. Families who buy a group chemistry class for mechanism work usually buy private hours afterwards as well, which is the expensive route to the same place.

The third is the investigation bought late. A research question that cannot produce a trend has to be rebuilt, and a rebuild four weeks from the deadline costs several times what a single viability hour would have cost at the start. This is the leak that most often doubles a chemistry budget, and it is entirely avoidable with one session booked before any apparatus is touched.

The fourth is the travel premium paid without measuring what it bought. Published in-home rates in Dubai run AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the figure. From a tower address that premium buys a journey through two arterial roads and a visitor parking process, and it narrows the available pool to whoever can complete that journey by seven. The fifth leak is the quietest: paying a weekly standing rate through the two middle terms of the Diploma, when a monthly review would hold the ground just as well and the money would be better saved for the examination term.

04

Two years of Diploma chemistry with the spending mapped out

Chemistry spending should be lumpy, and most families make it flat. A flat weekly rate across two years feels disciplined and is usually the wrong shape, because the course has two expensive terms and several cheap ones. Mapping the spend against the terms lets you buy more in the terms that matter without raising the total.

The first term of Year 12 is a bridging term. Students arriving from IGCSE meet a course that asks which bonding model applies and why, where IGCSE asked them to describe a property. A short block here is cheap and prevents the most expensive pattern in the subject, which is a student who understands each lesson and cannot assemble an argument from it. The second term is usually quiet, and a fortnightly review is enough.

The investigation term is the first peak. Budget for a viability hour, two or three processing and analysis sessions, and criterion feedback on drafts. The term after it is the second quiet period and the one families most often overspend in, because the habit of a weekly session has been established and nobody questions it. This is the term to drop to monthly and bank the difference.

The final two terms are the second peak and the one worth funding properly. Past papers under timed conditions, mark-scheme-by-mark-scheme review, mechanism blocks, and Paper 1B sets. Study leave shortens the school day and opens the mornings, which is the only period of the two years when the best hours are available, and buying more sessions then returns more per dirham than buying them in any other term. The table sets out one shape; adjust it to your school's own deadline pattern.

05

Group class, centre, visiting tutor or online one-to-one, priced for a tower

The format decision is a cost decision and it is usually made on convenience instead. Four options are realistically available to a JLT family, and each buys something different for a different number. Setting them side by side with the published rates attached makes the comparison honest, which is more than most pages in this search result do.

A tuition centre group class is the cheapest per student and the easiest to schedule because it runs on a fixed timetable. For chemistry content delivery it is reasonable value. For mechanisms, equilibrium argument and Paper 1B skills it is not, because none of those can be corrected individually inside a group hour. The hidden cost is the journey to the centre, which from JLT means an evening car trip in both directions.

A visiting private tutor is the most expensive per hour at the published AED 180 to 500 range, and the premium is travel rather than teaching. It also imposes the hardest constraint on your choice of tutor, because the pool shrinks to those who can reach a tower by a workable time. In Higher Level chemistry that pool is small at any price. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, so this row of the comparison describes the market rather than something we sell.

Online one-to-one is priced in the middle of the published range, carries no travel in either direction, and leaves the choice of tutor open. For chemistry specifically it has a technical advantage that is easy to miss: mechanism work, spreadsheet analysis and graph interpretation all happen on a screen anyway, so a shared annotated whiteboard is not a substitute for the real thing but the natural medium for it. The fourth option, a recorded course or video library, is cheapest of all and provides no feedback loop, which is the one thing chemistry marks actually require.

06

The extras that move the real cost after you have agreed a rate

An agreed hourly rate is not the price. Several things attach to it, and in the Dubai market they are disclosed inconsistently, which is why two tutors at AED 220 can produce invoices that differ by a third. Ask about each of the following before the first paid session rather than after the first invoice.

Marking between sessions is the biggest variable. A tutor who marks a timed paper section between lessons, writes a short diagnostic note and arrives with a plan is doing substantial unpaid or separately charged work. Some rates include it, some bill it, some simply do not offer it. For chemistry it matters: Paper 1B improvement depends on written feedback on attempts the student made alone, which has to be marked by someone.

Then the mechanical questions. Is the rate per sixty minutes or per lesson, and is a lesson fifty minutes? Is a cancellation inside twenty-four hours charged? Is the first session discounted or free, and if free, what condition is attached to it? Are session notes and annotated solutions provided afterwards, or does the whiteboard disappear when the call ends? Is there a charge for switching tutors if the first match is wrong?

A last one specific to this subject. Do not pay for past papers, mark schemes, subject guides or grade-boundary tables. Those are the examination boards' copyright material and nobody should be selling them to you. A tutor should reference them, cite the official source and link to it, which costs nothing. Our own position is the same: we point to the boards' own pages rather than supplying their documents, and we do not charge for materials we have no right to distribute.

07

Two rules that change what you should be willing to pay for

The first is the permit. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated through the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. The application route is MoHRE's own Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing service, with no fee stated and a two-working-day completion time.

That has a direct price consequence. An informal arrangement at AED 80 an hour arranged through a building group chat is only cheap if the person holds the permit, because individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No schedule of amounts has been published, so treat any page quoting you a figure as quoting something unverified. Ask the question, and ask it before money changes hands rather than after.

There is a second rule in the same area. A teacher at your child's own school tutoring your own child is the arrangement families ask for most and the one that carries the most exposure. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Check the current policy document before relying on it, but do not build a plan around that arrangement.

The second rule is about what the money may legitimately buy. A tutor may teach the investigation criteria, discuss whether a research question is viable, explain uncertainty handling and give written feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor must never write the investigation, supply data or rewrite a paragraph into final form. One page in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750, which is an academic-integrity breach and a malpractice trigger for the student. If a quote includes producing assessed work, the price is irrelevant because the product is unusable.

08

What to send, and what the free trial should prove before you pay

Start by making the brief specific enough to price. Send the level, Standard or Higher, the school and year group, the topics covered so far, and the component where marks are going. Add photographs of the last two marked assessments with annotations visible. A tutor who has read marked work before the trial can say in the first ten minutes whether the problem is content, answer shape or method, and that is the information you are actually shopping for.

The trial lesson then has a job, and it is not rapport. Watch whether the tutor works from your child's own lost marks or from a generic worksheet. Watch whether your child talks. Ask the tutor to name, out loud, the component they would work on first and why. A tutor who cannot name it after reading a marked script is not the specialist the top band is charging for. The trial is free, runs in full, and takes no payment and no card details.

Then agree the shape rather than an open-ended booking. A named weakness, a block length, and what happens between sessions. Blocks make the total knowable in advance, which is the single most effective budget control available to a tutoring family, and they end naturally when the error pattern changes rather than continuing because the slot exists.

If no specialist is free in your window, we say so and offer an alternative time or a date rather than substituting a general science tutor into a chemistry brief. Higher Level chemistry in an early-evening Gulf Standard Time slot is one of our most contested combinations. Disclosing that is worth more to you than concealing it, because a mismatched hour at any rate is the most expensive hour on this page.

Where we tutor

What chemistry tuition costs across the communities around JLT

Published rates do not vary by community, but what a family actually pays does, because the format available to them differs. The notes below describe how the practical choice, and therefore the bill, changes across the neighbourhoods JLT shares its schools and roads with.

Dubai Marina

Shares JLT's tower geography and its visitor-parking friction, so the in-home premium of AED 180 to 500 buys the same journey for the same reason. Marina and JLT families compete for the same early-evening online slots, which is the real scarcity here rather than price.

JBR

Same tower constraints with a longer approach road, so a visiting tutor's travel time is higher and the quoted rate tends to sit at the upper end of the published in-home band. Online removes that difference entirely, which is why uptake here is high.

The Greens and The Views

Low-rise and easier to reach by car, so visiting tutors quote nearer the lower end of the published in-home range. Even so, the choice narrows to whoever can make the journey, which in Higher Level chemistry is a short list at any price.

The Meadows and Emirates Hills

Villa communities with gates, where the published in-home rates buy a longer door-to-door time than the distance suggests. Families here often pay the premium once, measure what it bought, and move to online for the remainder of the Diploma.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

The largest school cluster in Dubai and the densest supply of tuition centres, so group classes are genuinely available here at lower per-student rates. The trade-off in chemistry is mechanism work, which does not survive a group of eight.

Al Sufouh and Dubai Media City

Short journeys from JLT, which keeps visiting rates competitive, and good access to centres. The budget question families here ask most is whether a centre group class plus one private hour beats two private hours, and in chemistry it usually does not.

Jumeirah Village Triangle and Circle

Inland, with a larger resident tutor population and consequently more low-cost offers in local groups. The caution is the permit question: an informal arrangement at AED 80 an hour is only cheap if the tutor holds the MoHRE private tuition work permit.

Discovery Gardens and Al Furjan

The most price-sensitive part of this corridor and the heaviest user of weekend morning slots, which cost the same as weekday ones but carry more work per hour because the student is not post-commute. That is a free saving and families here use it.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in JLT

IB World Schools JLT chemistry students travel to

No Diploma school sits inside the JLT clusters, so chemistry students here are enrolled across a spread of IB World Schools. The relevance to cost is that each school distributes the investigation deadline differently, which changes the term in which your spending peaks. Students we support attend schools in this group; no affiliation is implied.

British-curriculum schools where JLT students sit IGCSE Chemistry first

Many JLT students take Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 at one of these before choosing between A Level and the Diploma. The bridging block between the two courses is the cheapest high-value chemistry spend available, and it is best bought in the summer rather than in October.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Write a brief specific enough to price

Level, school, year group, topics covered and the component where the marks are going. Two or three lines is enough. A vague brief gets a vague quote and a generalist, and the generalist costs the same per hour as the specialist while moving less, which is the most expensive outcome available.

  2. 02

Send marked work before the first session

The last two marked assessments and the most recent mock, annotations visible. Phone photographs are fine. This converts the trial from an introduction into a diagnosis, and it is the single cheapest thing you can do to improve the value of everything you buy afterwards.

  3. 03

    Ask the three pricing questions

Is marking between sessions inside the rate? Is the rate per sixty minutes or per lesson? What happens if you stop after one session? These three answers move the real cost more than the headline rate does, and a provider who answers them crisply is usually worth hiring.

  4. 04

Use the free trial as an audition

A full lesson online with no payment and no card details. Judge two things: whether the tutor starts from your child's own errors, and whether your child speaks during the hour. Ask the tutor to name the first component they would target. Both signals are visible inside twenty minutes.

  5. 05

Buy a block, not an open booking

Agree a named weakness and a number of sessions, so the total is knowable before you commit. Blocks end when the error pattern changes rather than running until someone cancels, which is what keeps a chemistry budget from drifting through the quiet middle terms of the Diploma.

  6. 06

Review the spend every six weeks

Check whether the named losses have stopped appearing in marked work. If they have, move the focus or pause. If six weeks have produced no change in the pattern, change the approach or the tutor rather than renewing by default. This review is where most of the saving actually happens.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Attributed figures, not a rate card you must trust

Every dirham range on this page names the provider that published it and the month it was read. We publish the market rather than inventing a benchmark, because three of the pages competing for this search publish no price at all and a number you cannot check is worth nothing to a family making a decision.

No travel in the price

Lessons run online over live video, so nothing in what you pay is a journey. Published in-home rates in Dubai carry travel inside the figure, which is why they sit at AED 180 to 500 an hour. Removing that also removes the constraint that the tutor must live near enough to reach a JLT tower.

Component-level matching

Chemistry marks are lost in specific places: mechanisms, equilibrium argument, data questions, sign conventions. We match a tutor who has taught the component rather than the subject, because paying specialist rates for general chemistry revision is the most common way money leaves a tutoring budget without a grade moving.

Blocks that end

Where the brief is a named weakness, we price it as a block of sessions with an end point tied to the error pattern rather than an open weekly commitment. That makes the total knowable before you start and stops the quiet middle terms of the Diploma absorbing money that the examination term needs.

Clear academic-honesty limits

Investigation support means teaching the criteria, checking viability and giving written feedback on your child's own drafts. It never means writing it, supplying data or rewriting a paragraph into final form. One provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments; that product is unusable at any price and we will not supply it.

An honest no when the slot is full

Higher Level chemistry in an early-evening Gulf Standard Time window is one of our most contested combinations. When it is full we say so and offer an alternative time rather than putting a generalist into the brief, because a mismatched hour is the most expensive purchase in this whole market.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in JLT: your questions answered

What does an IB Chemistry tutor cost per hour for a family in JLT?+

Published Dubai figures read in October 2026 span a wide range. Tutopiya advertises from roughly AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget online end. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase lists AED 270. Bestimate's 2026 rate table puts specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level work at AED 200 to 450 and above, with BartyED's premium named tutors at AED 650. In-home visiting rates run AED 180 to 500 with travel inside the figure. Those are other providers' published numbers, not IB Gram prices.

Is a monthly package better value than paying for chemistry by the hour?+

It depends on whether the package matches the term you are in. Market packages sit around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions, and Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end up to AED 2,000 and above for specialist examination-year work. A package is good value in the investigation term and the final term, and poor value in the two quiet middle terms when a fortnightly review would hold the ground for a fraction of the cost.

Which part of IB Chemistry is worth paying a specialist rate for?+

Organic mechanisms first, then Paper 1B data-based questions. Both share a feature that justifies the cost: they cannot be improved by reading. Mechanisms have to be drawn repeatedly against someone correcting the arrows, charges and intermediates on each attempt, and data questions use unfamiliar methods the student must learn to judge. Both need a feedback loop, and a feedback loop is the one thing a textbook, a video library and a group class all fail to provide. Content recall sits at the other end: that is in your child's notes already and should not consume paid hours.

Is a group chemistry class at a Dubai centre cheaper in practice?+

Cheaper per student, yes, and reasonable value for content delivery and pace. It does not work for the parts of chemistry that cost marks. Eight students drawing eight different wrong mechanisms cannot each be corrected inside an hour, and equilibrium argument needs the tutor to read one student's sentence and rewrite it with them. Families who buy group classes for mechanism work usually buy private hours afterwards as well, which is the expensive route to the same destination. Add the JLT car journey in both directions when comparing the real cost.

What is the single most common way chemistry tutoring money gets wasted?+

Buying the subject instead of the component. A grade drops, a tutor is booked, the tutor starts at the beginning of the syllabus, and six weeks pass before anyone reads the marked script that would have identified the problem in twenty minutes. The remedy costs nothing: send the last two marked assessments before the first session and insist the trial lesson starts from them. The second most common is starting the scientific investigation late, which turns a few hours of supervision into a rebuild.

Does the in-home premium buy anything extra for a tower address?+

It buys a journey. Published in-home rates in Dubai run AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the figure, and for a JLT tower that journey means two arterial roads in the afternoon direction plus a visitor parking process. The teaching hour is the same hour. The real cost is not the money but the narrowing of choice: only tutors who can complete that journey by a workable evening time are available to you, and in Higher Level chemistry that is a short list. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE.

Should we pay for chemistry support in the quiet middle terms of the Diploma?+

Usually less than families do. The two terms between the bridging period and the investigation are the ones where a weekly slot continues out of habit rather than need. Dropping to a fortnightly review in those terms holds the ground just as well for most students and banks the difference for the final term, where timed papers and mark-scheme review return more per dirham than any other period. The exception is a student with an unresolved structural weakness, such as mole calculations, which should be fixed immediately whatever term it is.

How much tutoring does the chemistry scientific investigation actually need?+

Bought early, a handful of hours: one session testing whether the research question can produce a trend, two or three on data processing and graphing, and written feedback on drafts against the four criteria. Bought late it becomes a rebuild, because a question whose independent variable cannot be varied usefully has to be replaced and the data recollected. That is the point at which chemistry budgets most often double. The investigation carries a fifth of the subject grade, so the early hour is the highest-value booking in the course.

What extras should I ask about before agreeing a chemistry tutor's rate?+

Five things. Whether marking between sessions is inside the rate or billed separately, since Paper 1B progress depends on written feedback on work the student did alone. Whether the rate is per sixty minutes or per lesson, and how long a lesson is. Whether a late cancellation is charged. Whether annotated solutions and session notes are provided afterwards. And whether switching tutors costs anything if the first match is wrong. Those answers move the real total more than the headline hourly figure does.

Do chemistry tutors in Dubai need a permit, and does that affect the price?+

Yes to both. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and is granted free of charge for two years. Applications go through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system, with a two-working-day completion time. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no schedule of amounts is published. So an informal arrangement at AED 80 an hour through a building chat group is only genuinely cheap if the permit exists.

Can I buy only mechanism help rather than a whole chemistry course?+

Yes, and it is usually the better purchase. A block of six to ten sessions on organic mechanisms alone, with timed question sets attempted between lessons and every arrow corrected during them, costs a knowable total and ends when the error pattern changes. Buying a block rather than an open weekly booking is the most effective budget control available to a tutoring family, because the end point is defined before you start rather than decided by whoever remembers to cancel first.

Will paying more get my child a higher chemistry grade?+

Not reliably, and any provider promising a grade for a price should be treated with real scepticism. What the higher bands buy is subject depth: a tutor who can name the component where marks are going after reading one marked script, and who has taught Higher Level mechanisms to examination. That is worth paying for. What the top band does not buy is certainty, and claims about guaranteed improvement are a warning sign rather than a selling point. Judge the hour in the free trial instead of judging the number on the website.

Do you charge for past papers, mark schemes or the subject guide?+

No, and nobody should. Past papers, mark schemes, subject guides and grade-boundary tables are the examination boards' copyright material, and supplying them is not something a tutoring service has the right to sell. A tutor should reference them, cite the official source and link to it. We point families to the boards' own published pages instead, which costs nothing and keeps you on the version that is current rather than a copy of uncertain date.

Is the free chemistry trial really free, and what condition is attached to it?+

It is a full lesson, online, with no payment taken and no card details required, and the condition is simply one trial per student so the slot can be offered to the next family. Use it as an audition rather than a meeting. Ask the tutor to name the component they would target first and why, watch whether they work from your child's marked script or from a generic worksheet, and watch whether your child talks during the hour. A silent trial is a signal worth acting on straight away.

What is the cheapest high-value chemistry spend for a JLT family?+

A short bridging block in the summer before Year 12, for a student moving from IGCSE chemistry into the Diploma. IGCSE asks students to describe properties; the Diploma asks which bonding or energetic model applies and why. Six sessions covering that shift, plus a check on mole and solution method, costs a fraction of the remedial work families buy in October when the first marked assessment comes back. It is the clearest case in this subject of early money being worth several times late money.

What happens if no chemistry specialist is free at the time we need?+

We tell you and offer either an alternative time or a date when the slot opens. Higher Level chemistry in an early-evening Gulf Standard Time window is one of the most contested combinations we handle. We will not substitute a general science tutor into a Higher Level chemistry brief, because a mismatched specialist costs a term of a two-year programme and that term cannot be bought back at any rate. If the wait is long, we say how long rather than leaving the enquiry open.

Price the component, not the subject

If you are weighing up what an IB chemistry tutor in JLT should cost, the useful move is to narrow the brief before you compare any numbers. Send the level, the school and year, the topics covered, and the component where marks are going, with photographs of the last two marked assessments. We will match a chemistry specialist who has taught that component, propose a block with a knowable total rather than an open booking, and run the first lesson free so you can judge the hour before paying for one. Lessons run online over live video with a shared whiteboard, which is why none of what you pay is travel.
