IB Chemistry Tutor in Al Barsha South

An IB chemistry tutor in Al Barsha South is working against a calendar, not a syllabus list. Your child's Diploma Programme year has fixed pressure points: the Scientific Investigation deadline the school sets, mock examinations in winter, and the May session itself. Where a family sits on that timeline decides what a tutor should do next. Lessons run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time, so a session fits after the Al Barsha South school run without a drive at either end. The first lesson is free and starts by asking which week you are in.

  • Planning starts from your school's DP deadlines, not a generic syllabus order
  • Covers Structure 1-3 and Reactivity 1-3 of the current IB Chemistry guide
  • Scientific Investigation support is coaching and feedback, never writing

IB & IGCSE in Al Barsha South

The Diploma chemistry year has five pressure points, and only one of them is the exam

Chemistry is the subject where Diploma students most often feel they are keeping up and then discover they are not. The reason is structural rather than intellectual. Content arrives in a sequence set by the school, assessment arrives in a sequence set by the IB, and those two sequences do not align. A student can be fluent in bonding in November and still be in trouble, because the Scientific Investigation draft is due in three weeks and the practical work behind it was never properly planned.

There are five points in the two-year course where a chemistry student either gains ground or loses it. The first is the transition in, usually from MYP Sciences or IGCSE, where the jump is in quantitative reasoning rather than in content. The second is the choice between Higher and Standard Level, which has to be made before the student has seen enough HL material to judge it. The third is the Scientific Investigation: twenty per cent of the final grade, a single piece of work, and the only component where the student controls the timeline. The fourth is mock examinations, which for most Dubai schools land in the winter and are the first honest signal of where the grade actually is. The fifth is the final series itself.

A tutor arriving at each of those points should be doing something different. At the transition, the work is mole calculations, unit handling and the habit of showing a quantitative method - skills carried over from mathematics rather than from science. At the level decision, the work is a diagnostic: one HL-only topic taught properly and tested, so the choice rests on evidence instead of ambition. At the Investigation, the work is method, variables, uncertainty and evaluation, done by asking questions rather than supplying answers. After mocks, the work is paper-by-paper triage. In the final stretch, it is past papers against the data booklet and the mark scheme.

Dates are where tutoring pages in this market go wrong, and it is worth being explicit about why this one does not quote IB dates. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so no exam-session or results date in our research is confirmed from the IB itself. What is safe to say, and what every Dubai Diploma family already knows, is that UAE schools enter the May session, that the Investigation deadline is set by the school well before it, and that the school's DP coordinator holds the authoritative version of every date that matters. Ask them, write the dates on one sheet, and plan backwards from there. Any tutor who hands you an IB calendar they have not sourced is guessing on something you will act on.

What follows is the chemistry year read backwards from the May session, with the work each phase actually needs. Al Barsha South families tend to arrive at this page in one of three states: Year 12 in autumn with time to build, Year 13 in winter after disappointing mocks, or Year 13 in spring with eight weeks left. The honest plan looks completely different in each case, and the first session exists to work out which one you are in.

At a glance

  • Scientific Investigation: 20% of the grade, 3,000 words maximum, school-set deadline
  • Paper 1 is 36% of the grade; Paper 2 is 44% at both Standard and Higher Level
  • HL is 240 taught hours against 150 at SL, and the gap is depth not breadth
  • Mock examinations are the first honest grade signal most students get
  • IB session and results dates come from your school's DP coordinator, not from us
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Barsha South sits beside a cluster of schools running both the Diploma Programme and British alternatives, so a chemistry plan here has to know what the student did before Year 12 and what they are heading into. These are the programmes that feed the same chemistry classrooms.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme Chemistry

Standard Level across 150 taught hours, Higher Level across 240. The guide is organised into Structure 1 to 3 and Reactivity 1 to 3, with Tools and the inquiry process running through all of it. Assessment is Paper 1 at 36%, Paper 2 at 44% and the Scientific Investigation at 20%. A data booklet is supplied in both papers, which changes what is worth memorising.

International Baccalaureate students are 7% of Dubai's private-school enrolment, and the 2026-27 intake adds three new IB schools among seven new private schools creating 16,846 places. For Al Barsha South that means more Diploma places within a short drive each year, and a growing number of students whose chemistry teacher is new to the current guide.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme Sciences

The route most Diploma chemistry students in this cluster arrive from. MYP Sciences assesses four criteria out of 8 each - knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science - which builds strong investigation instincts and leaves quantitative fluency thinner than Diploma chemistry assumes.

MYP students moving into DP Chemistry in a Dubai school usually find the inquiry side familiar and the mole calculations unfamiliar. The gap shows up in the first term of Year 12 as a confident student who cannot finish a stoichiometry question, and it closes faster with targeted arithmetic work than with more chemistry.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson International GCSE Chemistry

The other main entry route, through Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1, or through a double-award science course. IGCSE chemistry covers much of the same territory at lower depth and with far less emphasis on uncertainty, error and evaluation, which is precisely where the Diploma's Investigation marks sit.

Many Al Barsha South students sit IGCSE at a British-curriculum school and then move into a Diploma Programme elsewhere in Dubai for Year 12. That move, made in a single summer, is the most common reason a Year 12 chemistry student needs support in their first term, and it is a transition problem rather than an ability problem.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level Chemistry

The alternative post-16 chemistry route offered by most British-curriculum schools near Al Barsha South. A Level goes deeper into fewer areas and assesses practical skills separately, where the Diploma folds investigation into a single internally assessed piece. Families comparing the two usually want to know which suits a medicine application.

Both routes are accepted by UAE and overseas universities, and the choice in this cluster is usually driven by what the school offers rather than by the subject. A student weighing HL Chemistry against A Level Chemistry should look at how each school timetables practical work, since that is where the real difference in experience lies.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry is the subject on this page, and these are the areas of the current guide where Diploma students in Dubai most often lose reachable marks. Each entry names what the component is actually testing rather than restating a topic title.

Structure 1: models of the particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

The mole, molar mass, concentration, limiting reagents and percentage yield. Almost every quantitative error later in the course traces back to a shaky method here, and the fix is arithmetic discipline rather than more chemistry.

Structure 2: models of bonding and structure

SL and HL

Ionic, covalent and metallic models, intermolecular forces, and the HL extension into formal charge and expanded structures. Students lose marks explaining a physical property without naming the specific force responsible.

Structure 3: classification of matter

SL and HL

Periodic trends and the chemistry of organic functional groups, plus HL spectroscopic identification. Trend questions need a reason stated in terms of nuclear charge and shielding, not a restatement of the trend itself.

Reactivity 1: what drives chemical reactions

SL and HL

Enthalpy, Hess cycles, bond enthalpies, entropy and Gibbs energy at HL. Sign conventions account for more lost marks here than any concept, and they are fixable in a single session.

Reactivity 2: how much, how fast and how far

SL and HL

Rate, rate equations and mechanisms at HL, plus equilibrium and the equilibrium constant. Le Chatelier answers fail when the student predicts a shift without saying which quantity the system is opposing.

Reactivity 3: mechanisms of chemical change

SL and HL

Acid-base behaviour, pH and buffers, redox, electrochemistry, and organic mechanisms at HL. Buffer calculations and electrode-potential sign handling are the two reliable HL marks sinks.

The Scientific Investigation

SL and HL, 20% of the grade

One piece of work, up to 3,000 words, assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at 6 marks each. The marks lost are almost always in evaluation, where students list limitations without explaining their effect on the result.

Uncertainty, error and data treatment

SL and HL

Propagating uncertainty, choosing significant figures honestly and distinguishing random from systematic error. Examined in Paper 1B data-based questions and central to the Investigation, and taught thinly in most schools for time reasons.

Using the data booklet under time pressure

SL and HL

A supplied booklet changes the skill from recall to navigation. Students who have not practised finding a value fast lose minutes per paper, and minutes are marks in Paper 1.

Extended response technique in Paper 2

SL and HL

Paper 2 is 44% of the grade and rewards structured explanation with chemical terms used precisely. The common failure is a correct idea written in everyday language that the mark scheme cannot credit.

Organic synthesis routes

Mainly HL

Multi-step conversions requiring reagents and conditions at each stage. Students who learn individual reactions and never practise chaining them cannot answer the question as asked.

Linking Tools and inquiry across topics

SL and HL

Experimental technique, technology and mathematics are woven through the guide rather than taught as a unit, so gaps hide easily. A diagnostic across all three usually explains a student whose topic tests look fine and whose papers do not.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways IB Chemistry support runs here, all delivered live online over video. Which one fits depends entirely on where the student sits on the Diploma calendar when they start.

Year 12 build, content and quantitative fluency

One session a week through the first Diploma year, working slightly ahead of the class on the quantitative topics and behind it on whatever the transition left thin. The aim is that the student meets mole calculations, enthalpy and equilibrium twice before they are examined on them once.

  • 60 or 90 minutes in a fixed weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time
  • Practice set from the student's own school material and the current guide
  • Quantitative drill separated from conceptual teaching
  • A written topic-confidence record updated each month

Investigation coaching block

A short block running alongside the student's own Scientific Investigation work, timed to the school's draft and final deadlines. The tutor questions the method, the variables, the uncertainty treatment and the evaluation. The student writes every word of it.

  • Research design interrogated before any data is collected
  • Uncertainty and significant figures handled explicitly
  • Evaluation taught as effect-on-result, not a list of limitations
  • No drafting, no editing to completion, no supplied content

Post-mock triage and final-phase papers

For a student in Year 13 after winter mocks. Every session is a timed section of a past paper, marked against the mark scheme with the data booklet open, and the plan is rebuilt weekly around whichever paper is costing most. No new content once the window closes.

  • Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 practised separately, not interchangeably
  • Data-booklet navigation timed deliberately
  • Marks lost classified by cause after each session
  • Sessions pause for school assessment weeks and resume in the same slot

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Barsha South

01

The chemistry year counted backwards from the May session

  • Get five dates from your DP coordinator: proposal, practicals, draft, final, mocks
  • No IB exam or results date on this page, because none could be verified from the IB
  • New content stops being efficient once mocks have been sat
  • The Investigation runs alongside content, not after it

Every useful chemistry plan in a Dubai Diploma school is built backwards. The fixed point is the May session that UAE schools enter. Everything else is positioned relative to it, and most of the dates that matter are set by the school rather than by the IB: the Investigation proposal, the practical window, the draft deadline, the final submission, and the mock examinations. A family who writes those five school dates on one sheet has a better planning document than any generic revision timetable.

A word on the dates we do not publish. The IB's own website returns an automated-access block, so no IB exam-session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself. Secondary sources circulate windows and results dates, and they may well be right, but a date a parent acts on should come from the authority that sets it. Ask your school's Diploma coordinator for the session window, the results release arrangement and the internal upload deadlines, and confirm them against ibo.org. A tutoring page that prints an IB date it has not verified is handing you a liability dressed as a service.

Working backwards from the session, the useful structure is four phases. Phase one, roughly the first Diploma year, is content and quantitative fluency, and it is the only phase where learning new material is genuinely efficient. Phase two, spanning the end of Year 12 into Year 13, is the Scientific Investigation, which has to be fitted around content rather than bolted on after it. Phase three is the post-mock window, where triage replaces teaching. Phase four is the final stretch, where nothing new goes in and everything is timed. Students who try to run phase one work in phase four are the most common avoidable failure in this subject.

What eight weeks can actually achieve in IB Chemistry

  • Weeks 1-2: diagnose from timed papers and recover presentation and timing marks
  • Weeks 3-6: two or three topics chosen for mark yield across both papers
  • Weeks 7-8: timed papers only, with data-booklet navigation drilled
  • An unstarted Investigation is a conversation with the school, not a tutoring task

Families in Al Barsha South frequently arrive with roughly two months left and a specific question: is it worth starting. The answer is yes, with a reshaped plan, and the honest version of what two months buys is narrower than most tutoring pages imply. Eight weeks will not deliver a syllabus. It will reliably deliver three things: technique on the paper formats, recovery of marks currently being lost to presentation and timing, and genuine improvement on two or three high-yield topics chosen for mark value rather than for comfort.

Here is how a realistic eight weeks divides. Weeks one and two are diagnosis and the cheapest wins: a full Paper 1 and a Paper 2 section sat timed, marked against the mark scheme, with lost marks sorted into causes. Presentation and precision errors usually surface immediately, and those are recoverable in days rather than months. Weeks three to six are two or three targeted topics, chosen because they carry weight in both papers - Reactivity 1 enthalpy work and Reactivity 3 acid-base behaviour are common picks - taught then immediately tested on past-paper questions. Weeks seven and eight are entirely timed papers and data-booklet speed.

What eight weeks cannot do is close an Investigation that has not been started, or rescue a student who has not met half the HL extension material. In those cases the honest advice differs: speak to the school about the Investigation timeline before paying for tutoring, because an internal deadline is a school matter and no tutor can move it. And where the content gap is genuinely large, the better use of eight weeks is to secure the achievable grade band firmly rather than to chase a band that the calendar has already closed. A tutor who agrees to cover two years of chemistry in eight weeks is telling you something about their honesty, not their ability.

03

The Scientific Investigation, and where its marks are actually lost

  • Four criteria, six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion, evaluation
  • Evaluation is the biggest loss, because effect-on-result is not stated
  • Uncertainty and significant figures are marked, not decorative
  • A tutor questions and reviews; the student writes every word

The Scientific Investigation is twenty per cent of the chemistry grade, up to 3,000 words, and assessed on four criteria worth six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. It is the only part of the course where the student sets the pace, which is both the opportunity and the problem. Students who start late lose marks in a predictable order, and the order is useful to know in advance.

Research design marks go missing when the question is not actually answerable with the equipment available, or when the variables are named but not controlled in any described way. Data analysis marks go when uncertainty is ignored, when significant figures are carried inconsistently, or when a graph is drawn without considering whether the relationship is linear. Conclusion marks go when the student states a result without comparing it to accepted values or to the theory the investigation was testing. Evaluation is where most of the loss sits: students write a list of limitations - time, equipment, temperature - without saying what effect each one had on the result and in which direction. The criterion rewards the effect, not the list.

What a tutor may do here is strictly bounded, and the boundary is worth stating plainly because competitors in this market cross it. We question the method, point out an uncontrolled variable, ask what the uncertainty on a measurement is and why, challenge whether the conclusion follows from the data, and read a section the student has written to tell them which criterion it is not yet meeting. We do not write any part of the report, redraft it, supply a research question, or edit it towards submission. One provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments. That is an academic-integrity breach, the consequences fall on the student rather than the seller, and it is not available from us at any price.

What IB Chemistry tutoring costs in this part of Dubai

  • Monthly packages seen in Dubai: AED 799 for eight online sessions
  • Bestimate monthly estimate for specialist exam-year support: AED 1,000-2,000+
  • In-home one-to-one carries a travel premium over the same tutor online
  • Examiner claims should be evidenced, and never imply access to marking

Budgeting is easier monthly than hourly, so start there. Packages visible in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. A Year 13 chemistry student on one specialist session a week therefore sits in that top band for the exam year, which is a real line in a household budget and a smaller one than most families fear before they look.

The hourly figures behind those monthly numbers, each published by the provider named: Tutopiya advertises online sessions from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, generally university-student tutors. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, with home tutors to AED 500, and IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above. BartyED publishes AED 650 for premium examiner-led work. None of those are IB Gram prices; they are what each of those providers states publicly, as of October 2026.

Reading the bands as a market, the step worth paying for in Diploma chemistry is the one into genuine subject specialism, because the current guide is recent enough that a generalist science tutor may be teaching an older structure. The step above that buys scarcity rather than quality and should be checked rather than assumed, particularly where examiner status is claimed: that claim is only worth something if it can be evidenced, and it should never be used to imply access to marking or boundary information. Worth holding in context too: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. IB Gram publishes no rate card here; the free trial lesson exists so the teaching is seen before money is discussed.

Online, in-home or group for a Diploma chemistry student here

  • IB Gram delivers UAE lessons online; home visits are an India-only service
  • The binding constraint for DP Chemistry is specialist supply, not distance
  • Shared whiteboard plus the data booklet reproduces most in-room working
  • Recordings let a student rewatch a mechanism or a Hess cycle

To be unambiguous: IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. UAE lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, and visiting tutors are a service we operate only in India. That belongs near the top of a page a parent reached by looking for someone local, and the comparison that follows is not a defence of a limitation - for Diploma chemistry specifically, the online case is the stronger one on its merits.

The reason is the match, not the medium. A Diploma chemistry student needs someone who knows the current guide, the Investigation criteria by letter, and the difference between what Paper 1B and Paper 2 reward. In a radius of a few kilometres around Al Barsha South, the number of people who fit that description and are free between 4.30pm and 7pm is small. Widen the pool past the drive and it is not small. A family choosing in-home is choosing geography first and specialism second, and in a subject this specific that trade is expensive in a way the hourly rate does not show.

The in-home advantages are genuine and worth naming: physical presence keeps a tired student at the desk, and a tutor in the room can see a page and a face at once. Video covers more of that than sceptics expect, because chemistry work is written and diagrammatic, and a shared whiteboard with the data booklet open side by side is closer to the in-room experience than a conversation-based subject would be. Sessions can also be recorded, so a student can rewatch a Hess cycle worked through at the point they lost it, which no in-home lesson provides. What video asks of a family is a desk, a door left open and a charged device.

KHDA, inspection reports and what they say about a school's science teaching

  • KHDA publishes an annual report per school, banded Outstanding to Very Weak
  • The subject and phase breakdown is the part a Diploma family needs
  • 227 private schools and 387,441 private-school students in Dubai, 2024-25
  • Seven new private schools for 2026-27, three of them IB, adding 16,846 places

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described by u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects annually and publishes a report per school across six bands from Outstanding to Very Weak. For a family in Al Barsha South trying to understand whether a chemistry problem belongs to their child or to the teaching, that report is the only independent evidence available and it is free to read.

Read past the headline band. Reports break attainment and progress down by subject and phase, so a school rated Good overall may be rated Acceptable for post-16 science attainment. They also comment on teaching quality and on assessment, and an inspection note that internal assessment data does not align with external outcomes is a direct explanation for a predicted grade that keeps not arriving. None of this means a school is letting a student down; it tells a family which gap they are considering paying to cover, which is a different and more useful question.

The scale context matters because it explains staffing. Dubai had 387,441 private-school students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering 17 different curricula, with the UK curriculum on 37% of enrolment, Indian on 26%, US on 14% and International Baccalaureate on 7%. Seven new private schools open for 2026-27, four UK curriculum and three IB, adding 16,846 places, after six opened during 2025-26 with enrolment up 6%. A Diploma chemistry department in a school that opened eighteen months ago is, by definition, teaching the current guide for the first or second time. That is not a criticism. It is a reason a specialist second opinion on the Investigation criteria can be worth having.

Permits, ethics and who may legally tutor your child in Dubai

  • MoHRE private tuition work permit: Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Free of charge, two years' validity, two working days to issue
  • No published fine schedule, so treat any quoted penalty figure as invented
  • Your child's own teacher is the wrong private hire, ethics rules aside

Private tuition in the UAE runs on a permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. It is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. The official route is MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

Because the permit is free and quick, there is no reasonable explanation for a working tutor not holding one. u.ae states that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE will be subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount can honestly be quoted, and figures circulating online could not be verified. Ask to see the permit rather than a listing or a screenshot of one.

The ethics layer is separate and matters specifically in chemistry, where a student's own teacher also supervises their Investigation. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the permit holder's own school. Those are press-reported positions and should be checked against the current policy document, but the direction is clear enough to act on: hiring your child's own chemistry teacher privately is the wrong move even where it looks convenient. A separate point for completeness: an operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram operates no UAE centre and holds no approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies in a Diploma timetable

  • Mandatory UAE subjects run alongside the Diploma, not in place of any part of it
  • Separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs are required by KHDA
  • Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit
  • Additional content in those subjects needs prior MoE permission

A scheduling fact that surprises families new to Dubai: the mandatory UAE subjects run alongside the Diploma Programme, not instead of parts of it. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements must be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose academic year starts in April. The federal position behind this is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, while adhering to the Ministry's general regulations.

The organisational rules are precise. For Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited due to the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language; Arabic is the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students; and the school's licensed-curriculum language applies for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and in Moral, Social and Cultural studies. Schools must ensure all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects.

The reason this sits on a chemistry page is time. KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit, permits schools to vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and advises that any mandatory subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. Those periods come out of the same timetable as six Diploma subjects, the core, and practical chemistry. A Dubai Diploma student is carrying a heavier week than the same student would elsewhere, which is why the question is never whether a child has an hour free but which hour a weekly session displaces. For tutoring in the mandatory subjects themselves, note that using any different or additional content without prior MoE permission is strictly prohibited, so support there stays within the school's own material.

Starting mid-year, and what we will tell you honestly

  • Send the level, the school's Investigation deadlines and the last marked paper
  • The trial is a marked past-paper section with the data booklet open
  • If no genuine current-guide specialist is free, we say so and give you options
  • Monthly review against a re-marked timed section, not against impressions

The first step is a free trial lesson, and for this subject the trial starts with paperwork rather than chemistry. We ask for the level, the school's Investigation deadlines, the most recent marked assessment and the mock result if there is one. Then the session works a section of a past paper live with the data booklet open, and the tutor marks it against the mark scheme while the student watches. What a parent has at the end is a position on the calendar, a list of topics by confidence band, and a view on whether one session a week or two makes sense from here. No card is required and nothing continues if the match is wrong.

Matching for Diploma chemistry takes a few days rather than minutes, because the match is to the current guide and to the Investigation criteria rather than to the word chemistry. The pool for HL and SL chemistry is reasonable, so most requests fill quickly. The exception we will tell you about rather than paper over: a request that combines a niche Investigation context with a narrow evening slot during the busiest weeks of Year 13 sometimes has no genuine specialist free. In that case the options are to wait, to move the slot, or to begin with a strong generalist on a stated interim basis - and we will say which one it is.

After the first month the plan is tested against evidence. A fresh paper section is sat timed and the lost marks are classified the same way as in the trial. If precision and timing have improved and content has not, teaching takes a larger share of the sessions; if content is closing and timing is not, the balance moves to timed papers. Sessions pause for school assessment weeks and for travel, and the slot is held. Nobody here will promise a 7, because no tutor can deliver a grade. What a chemistry tutor can deliver is a student who knows which paper is costing them marks and why, eight weeks before anyone else notices.

Where we tutor

Al Barsha South and the Diploma catchment around it

Al Barsha South runs in five numbered sub-communities from Al Khail Road towards Dubailand, and the Diploma schools its families use are scattered across New Dubai rather than concentrated in one place. Online delivery means the same chemistry specialist serves all of these at the same session time.

Al Barsha South 1-3

Villas and townhouses nearest the Mall of the Emirates corridor. Several of the nearest secondary schools are British-curriculum, so Diploma students here frequently commute further than their IGCSE siblings and arrive home later.

Al Barsha South 4-5

Newer and apartment-heavy, bordering Arjan and Dubai Science Park. Longer bus routes push the realistic weekday session start to 5pm or later, which matters when a Paper 1 timed section needs 90 uninterrupted minutes.

Jumeirah Village Circle

The dense apartment market immediately south, where Diploma students in the same building often attend three different schools with three different Investigation deadlines. Any plan has to be built from the student's own school sheet.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Villas with their own school provision and a mix of curricula. A short hop on the map and a slow one at 3.15pm, which is why evening slots fill faster here than afternoon ones.

Al Barsha Heights and Dubai Internet City

High-rise living north across Sheikh Zayed Road, with many parents working within walking distance of home. Families here commonly want a 7pm session so a parent is present for the first few lessons.

Dubai Hills Estate

East over Al Khail Road, with its own secondary provision. Diploma students here and in Al Barsha South often sit the same session, so comparing two schools' internal deadlines is genuinely informative.

Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

Towards the coast, home to several long-established secondary schools. The drive from Al Barsha South is unremarkable at 11am and punishing at 3.30pm, which shapes what any in-person arrangement can offer.

Arjan and Dubai Science Park

South-west and still filling out. Local supply of Diploma chemistry specialists is thin, which is the clearest case for matching online rather than by postcode.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Barsha South

Al Barsha, Al Barsha South and Al Sufouh

The schools in and around Al Barsha South include both Diploma and British-curriculum providers, and some run the Diploma alongside A Level. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; naming them describes the local ecosystem and implies no relationship of any kind.

  • GEMS Founders School - Al Barsha
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Safa Community School
  • American School of Dubai
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai College

Jumeirah Village and the Dubai Hills corridor

The adjacent catchment for Diploma places, reachable quickly outside peak hours. Chemistry cohorts here are large enough that two students in the same online slot often recognise each other's practical set-ups.

  • Sunmarke School
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • GEMS Wellington Academy - Al Khail
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • GEMS Metropole School

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

North-west of Al Barsha South, with established secondary provision and its own Diploma cohorts. Useful for a family comparing how two schools timetable the Scientific Investigation across Year 12 and Year 13.

  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • Emirates International School - Meadows
  • Regent International School
  • Victory Heights Primary School

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send your level and your school's deadline sheet

Higher or Standard Level, the dates the school has set for the Investigation proposal, draft and final submission, the mock window, and the most recent marked assessment. Those details place the student on the calendar, which is what decides the shape of the first month.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson as a diagnostic

A live online session where the student works a real past-paper section with the data booklet open and the tutor marks it against the scheme in front of them. The output is a confidence list by topic and a classification of where marks were lost, sent to you afterwards in writing.

  3. 03

    Choose the phase-appropriate plan

Year 12 build, Investigation coaching, or post-mock triage. The same student needs a different plan in October and in February, and the point of the diagnostic is to pick the right one rather than defaulting to weekly content teaching.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions with work set from the current guide

Practice taken from the student's own school material and from past papers at the right level, marked with the mark-scheme reasoning attached. Quantitative drill is kept separate from conceptual teaching so neither hides the other.

  5. 05

Investigation checkpoints at the school's dates

Where the Investigation is live, sessions are timed to the school's own proposal, draft and submission deadlines. The tutor questions design, uncertainty and evaluation and reads the student's own writing against the criteria. No drafting and no editing to completion.

  6. 06

Final phase: timed papers and nothing new

In the closing weeks, Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 are practised separately and timed, data-booklet navigation is drilled, and no new content is introduced. The plan is rebuilt weekly around whichever component is costing the most marks.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We plan from your school's calendar, not from a syllabus order

The Investigation deadline, the mock window and the session date decide what is worth doing this month. A tutor who starts at Structure 1 in February because that is where the book starts is working against the only timeline that matters to your child.

Current guide, named criteria

Chemistry support here is built on the current guide's Structure and Reactivity organisation and on the four Investigation criteria by name, each worth six marks. That specificity is how a parent can tell a subject specialist from a general science tutor in one conversation.

No IB dates we have not verified

The IB's site blocks automated checking, so this page publishes no IB exam or results date. We point you to your school's Diploma coordinator and to ibo.org instead. A date a parent acts on should come from the authority that sets it.

Online delivery, said plainly

UAE lessons are one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; visiting tutors are an India-only service. Stating it here means no family finds out after paying for a first month of lessons.

The Investigation boundary is not negotiable

We question method, challenge uncertainty treatment, and tell a student which criterion their own writing is not yet meeting. We do not write, redraft or edit a report towards submission. Providers in this market sell completed coursework; the risk of that lands on the student.

Honest about who is free

If no genuine current-guide specialist is available in the slot you want, we say so and give you the options rather than placing a generalist and calling it a specialist match. No competitor in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Barsha South: your questions answered

My child is in Year 13 and mocks went badly. Is there still time for chemistry?+

Yes, with a reshaped plan. After mocks the efficient work is triage rather than teaching. The first session marks a full Paper 1 and a Paper 2 section against the mark scheme and sorts every lost mark into a cause: content gap, imprecise wording, timing, or misread command. Precision and timing losses usually recover within a few weeks because they are habits. Content gaps are prioritised by mark yield across both papers rather than by what the student finds least unpleasant. What the remaining weeks will not do is teach the whole Higher Level extension, and a tutor who claims otherwise is selling.

How is IB Chemistry assessed at Standard and Higher Level?+

Paper 1 carries 36% and combines multiple-choice questions with data-based questions, running longer at Higher Level. Paper 2 carries 44% and uses short and extended response questions. The Scientific Investigation carries the remaining 20% and is marked internally against four criteria. A data booklet is supplied in both papers, which shifts the skill from recall towards navigation and application. Higher Level is 240 taught hours against 150 at Standard Level, and the difference is depth within the same Structure and Reactivity themes rather than a separate list of extra topics.

Which Investigation criterion costs chemistry students the most marks?+

Evaluation, by a clear margin. The four criteria - research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation - are worth six marks each. Students handle design and data reasonably and then write evaluation as a list: not enough time, limited equipment, room temperature varied. The criterion does not reward the list. It rewards saying what effect each limitation had on the result and in which direction, with a suggested improvement that would actually address it. Conclusion marks are the second most common loss, usually because a result is stated without being compared to an accepted value or to the theory being tested.

Can a tutor help write my child's Chemistry Internal Assessment?+

No, and anyone who offers to should be avoided. A tutor may question the research question, point out an uncontrolled variable, ask how an uncertainty was arrived at, challenge whether the conclusion follows from the data, and read a section the student has written to say which criterion it is not yet meeting. A tutor may not supply a research question, write or part-write the report, or edit it towards submission. One provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright. The malpractice consequences of that fall on the student, not the seller, and it is not something IB Gram offers at any price.

When are the IB exams, and why does this page not give the dates?+

UAE Diploma schools enter the May session. This page deliberately publishes no specific IB exam or results date, because the IB's own site returns an automated-access block and no date in our research could be confirmed from the IB itself. Secondary sources circulate windows, and they may be accurate, but a date a family schedules around should come from the body that sets it. Ask your school's Diploma coordinator for the session window, the internal upload deadlines and the results arrangements, then confirm against ibo.org. Any tutoring page printing an unverified IB date is passing you a risk.

Should my child take Chemistry at Higher or Standard Level?+

Decide it on tested evidence rather than on ambition or on a university wish list alone. The useful diagnostic is to teach one Higher-Level-only element properly - the Reactivity 1 entropy and Gibbs energy work is a good choice - then test it under timed conditions. A student who handles that comfortably can carry 240 hours of depth. A student who handles it only with heavy support will likely carry it at the cost of their other five subjects. The decision sits with the school within IB registration rules, so bring marked evidence to that conversation rather than a preference.

What does IB Chemistry tutoring cost monthly around Al Barsha South?+

Monthly is the easier frame. Bestimate's Dubai 2026 estimates for one weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, which is the band a Year 13 chemistry student falls into. Packages visible in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those are other providers' published figures, not ours. IB Gram runs a free trial lesson first and discusses cost once you have seen the teaching.

Does IB Gram send a chemistry tutor to our home in Al Barsha South?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; visiting tutors are a service we run only in India. UAE lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For Diploma chemistry the online case is genuinely strong rather than a compromise: the binding constraint is finding someone who knows the current guide and the Investigation criteria, and within a few kilometres of Al Barsha South the number of such people free between 4.30pm and 7pm is small. Widening past the drive widens the specialism available.

My child came from MYP Sciences and is struggling in Year 12 chemistry. Why?+

Almost always a quantitative gap rather than a chemistry one. MYP Sciences builds strong inquiry and design instincts, assessed against four criteria out of eight each, and rather less fluency in the arithmetic Diploma chemistry assumes: moles, concentration, limiting reagents, unit conversion and significant figures carried through a multi-step calculation. The student understands the chemistry and stalls in the middle of the working. The remedy is short, targeted quantitative drill separated from conceptual teaching, usually a few weeks of it, not a general chemistry course from the beginning.

How many chemistry sessions a week does a Dubai Diploma student usually need?+

One is the normal starting point and two is the exception rather than the default. One weekly session is enough to work slightly ahead of the class on quantitative topics and behind it on gaps, provided the student does the set work between sessions. Two becomes justified in three situations: a large content gap carried into Year 13, Higher Level alongside a second demanding science, or a short intensive block around the Investigation deadline. We would rather start with one and add a second on evidence than book two and discover the student had no time to use either.

How do I tell a real chemistry specialist from a general science tutor?+

Ask three questions before the first paid session. Which themes does the current guide use to organise content, and the answer should be Structure 1 to 3 and Reactivity 1 to 3. What are the four Investigation criteria and what is each worth, with six marks each as the answer. What is the difference between what Paper 1B and Paper 2 reward. A specialist answers all three without hesitation. A general science tutor usually answers the first and hesitates on the second, which tells you they will be learning the Investigation alongside your child.

Can sessions move during Ramadan or around school assessment weeks?+

Yes, and they routinely do. Sessions shift to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan for families who prefer it, and the slot is held rather than lost. We also pause during school assessment weeks, because a student sitting internal examinations does not benefit from a tutoring session the same evening. Travel breaks work the same way: the slot stays reserved. For Year 13 students the one period we advise against pausing is the eight weeks before the session, since timed-paper practice loses its value when it becomes occasional rather than weekly.

Is a KHDA inspection report useful for judging a school's chemistry teaching?+

More useful than most parents realise, provided you read past the overall band. KHDA inspects annually and publishes a report per school on six bands from Outstanding to Very Weak, broken down by subject and by phase, so a school rated Good overall can be rated Acceptable for post-16 science attainment. Reports also comment on assessment quality, and a note that internal data does not align with external outcomes explains a predicted grade that never arrives. With seven new private schools opening in Dubai for 2026-27, three of them IB, department-level variation is normal and worth checking.

What happens if no current-guide chemistry specialist is free when we want to start?+

We tell you, rather than placing someone and describing them as a specialist. For Higher and Standard Level chemistry the pool is reasonable and most requests fill within a few days. The requests that stall are narrow combinations: an unusual Investigation context, or a single fixed evening slot during the busiest weeks of Year 13. The honest options are to wait a week, to move the slot, or to start with a strong generalist on a clearly stated interim basis. No competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit, which is exactly why we do.

Do the mandatory UAE subjects affect how much chemistry time my child has?+

Yes, and it is worth factoring in before adding a weekly session. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, and KHDA calculates their instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit with a recommended minimum of 25 minutes per lesson. Those periods share the week with six Diploma subjects, the core and practical science, so a Dubai Diploma student carries a fuller timetable than the same student elsewhere. The real question is not whether an hour exists but which hour the session displaces.

Tell us which week you are in

Chemistry support is only as good as its timing, so the most useful thing you can send is your school's deadline sheet: the Investigation proposal, draft and final dates, the mock window, and the level your child is registered at. The free trial lesson then marks a real past-paper section with the data booklet open and places the student on the calendar, with a written list of topics by confidence band. Lessons run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time. No IB dates we have not verified, no grade promises, and a straight answer if the specialist you need is not free this week.
