IGCSE Science Tutor in Al Barsha South

Searching for an IGCSE science tutor in Al Barsha South, and then checking whether Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Village or Dubai Hills would turn up someone better, is a sensible thing for a parent to do. This page does that comparison properly and reaches an uncomfortable conclusion: the neighbourhoods differ in schools, commute and fee band, and the right answer for a science student is the same in all of them. Lessons run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time, matched to the exact syllabus code your child sits.

  • Matched to the code: Cambridge 0610, 0620, 0625, 0654 or Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1
  • Separate sciences, double award and single award treated as different courses

IB & IGCSE in Al Barsha South

Four neighbourhoods, four school mixes, one answer

A parent in Al Barsha South who starts searching for science support usually widens the search within a day. Would Dubai Marina have more tutors. Would a Jumeirah Village agency be cheaper. Does Dubai Hills, with its newer schools and higher fee band, have better people. These are reasonable questions and they all have answers, so this page sets out the comparison honestly rather than asserting that one location wins.

Start with what actually differs between them. Al Barsha South is five numbered sub-communities of villas and mid-rise apartments sitting inside a ring of established British-curriculum schools, which means a short school run and a large local Year 10 and Year 11 cohort. Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence are vertical, international and transient, with few schools inside the towers and most children bussed inland. Jumeirah Village Circle and Triangle are dense, newer and mixed, with families from a wide fee range sharing the same bus routes. Dubai Hills Estate is newer again, lower density, higher fee band, with its own schools and an easier afternoon run. Those are real differences and they change the commute, the school options and the price of a villa. They do not change what an IGCSE science student needs.

The reason they do not is that the binding constraint in this subject is not distance. It is the syllabus code. A student doing Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 as a Double Award sits different papers from a student doing Cambridge Physics 0625 as a separate science, and both sit different papers again from a student on Pearson Edexcel 4PH1, which assesses practical skills inside the written papers rather than through a separate practical or alternative-to-practical component. A tutor who is excellent at one of those and vague about the others will set the wrong practice, and that error costs the same number of marks in Marina as it does in Al Barsha South.

The second constraint is the window. Across all four neighbourhoods, school buses deliver secondary students home between roughly 3.30pm and 4.15pm, and an in-person tutor has to arrive after that and before the evening collapses. Within a drivable radius of any one of these communities, the number of people who both know 0654 Extended Paper 4 as a document and are free at 4.45pm on a Tuesday is small. Across the network, with no drive attached at either end, it is not. That single fact is why the recommendation does not change by postcode.

What does change by neighbourhood is which schools the student is competing against for a sixth-form place, which exam board their cohort is entered for, and how much time the school run leaves. Those are worth knowing, and the comparison table further down sets them out side by side. What the comparison should not be used for is choosing a tutor by proximity, because proximity is the one variable in this subject that carries no educational value at all.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Barsha South and the communities around it run a mix of British, IB and other curricula, and science students move between them more often than any other subject group. These are the programmes feeding the same Year 10 and Year 11 science classrooms.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson International GCSE Sciences

Three routes within one label. Separate sciences give three grades from three syllabuses. Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 is a Double Award: one course, one grade, counted as two IGCSEs. Combined Science 0653 is a Single Award. Cambridge separate sciences add a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper; Pearson does not, assessing practical understanding inside the theory papers instead.

British-curriculum schools carry 37% of Dubai's private-school enrolment, the largest share of any curriculum, and almost all of them enter Year 11 for international GCSE sciences. Within the Al Barsha South ring the board varies school to school, and at least two schools in this cluster enter different science routes within the same year group depending on set.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme Sciences

The alternative at the same ages, assessed on four criteria out of 8 each rather than on papers: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Students arrive in an IGCSE class with better experimental design instincts and weaker exam-answer discipline.

Several schools within a short drive of Al Barsha South run MYP instead of IGCSE, which produces transfers in both directions each September. A student moving into IGCSE science for Year 11 has one term to learn a mark scheme they have never met, and that is distinct work from general science support.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme Sciences

Where strong IGCSE science grades lead for students staying in the IB system: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and others at Standard or Higher Level, with a Scientific Investigation worth 20% of the subject grade. Diploma sciences assume the quantitative fluency that IGCSE Extended builds and Core does not.

International Baccalaureate students make up 7% of Dubai private-school enrolment, and the 2026-27 intake adds three new IB schools. A student in Al Barsha South intending to take a Diploma science at Higher Level should be on an Extended or Higher tier at IGCSE, since a Core entry caps the grade below most sixth-form entry requirements.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level Sciences

The other post-16 route in this cluster, with practical skills assessed separately from theory. A Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics each assume the whole of the Extended or Higher IGCSE content as background, and the common first-term shock is the volume of quantitative work rather than the difficulty of the concepts.

Most British-curriculum schools near Al Barsha South offer A Level sciences, and sixth-form entry commonly asks for a 6 or 7 at IGCSE in the subject. Students who took a Double Award rather than separate sciences sometimes find one specific A Level - usually Physics - harder to enter, which is a reason to check entry requirements in Year 10 rather than Year 11.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Science on this page means three subjects and several routes. Below are the areas where students across all four neighbourhoods lose reachable marks, with what the examiner is actually looking for in each.

Biology: transport in plants and animals

0610 Extended · 4BI1

Xylem and phloem, transpiration, the heart and the double circulatory system. Marks go on describing a structure when the question asked for a function, and on omitting the direction a substance moves.

Biology: enzymes and the effect of variables

0610 Core and Extended

Rate against temperature and pH, denaturation, and the experimental design questions built around them. Students name the variable without saying how it would be controlled, which is where the design mark sits.

Biology: genetics and inheritance diagrams

0610 Extended · 4BI1

Punnett squares, ratios, codominance and sex linkage. The error is almost always notation rather than understanding: parental genotypes written without defining the allele symbols first.

Chemistry: moles, formulae and reacting masses

0620 Extended · 4CH1

The quantitative spine of the whole syllabus. A student who cannot carry a mole calculation through three steps will lose marks on acids, electrolysis and energetics questions that look nothing like stoichiometry.

Chemistry: electrolysis and electrode products

0620 Extended · 4CH1

Predicting products at each electrode for molten and aqueous electrolytes, with half equations. The aqueous case is where students guess, because the rules about which ion is discharged are learned loosely.

Chemistry: organic chemistry and homologous series

0620 Extended · 4CH1

Alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, carboxylic acids, polymers and the tests that distinguish them. Displayed formulae must show every bond, and a skeletal shortcut loses the mark however correct the molecule is.

Physics: forces, motion and graph interpretation

0625 Extended · 4PH1

Distance-time and velocity-time graphs, gradient and area under the curve. The area-under-a-velocity-time-graph question is answered as a gradient more often than any other misread in the paper.

Physics: electricity, circuits and series-parallel reasoning

0625 Extended · 4PH1

Current, potential difference, resistance combinations and the reasoning about what happens when one component changes. Students know the equations and stall on the qualitative reasoning the paper actually asks for.

Physics: waves, refraction and ray diagrams

0625 Core and Extended

Reflection, refraction, total internal reflection and lens diagrams. Ray diagram marks are awarded for construction lines and arrows, which students routinely omit while drawing the correct image.

Practical skills: Paper 5 and Paper 6

Cambridge separate sciences and 0654

The practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper, worth around a fifth of the Cambridge grade. It tests tables, graph plotting, anomalies, variables and improvements, and it is the most predictable paper in the whole set and the least practised.

Command terms across all three sciences

All codes

Describe, explain, suggest, compare and calculate each demand a different answer shape. A correct idea written as a description where an explanation was asked earns nothing, and this single habit accounts for a large share of avoidable loss.

Multi-step calculations with unit changes

Extended and Higher tiers

Converting between units mid-calculation and carrying significant figures honestly. The physics papers punish this hardest, and the chemistry papers hide it inside mole work where the slip is harder to spot.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways IGCSE science support runs, all delivered live online over video. The choice depends on how many sciences the student is carrying and how the school has entered them.

Single science, weekly

One subject, one session a week, for the student whose problem is clearly located: physics is fine and chemistry is not. The tutor works the school's scheme of work and the relevant past papers, and the other two sciences are left alone rather than padded out for the sake of a fuller package.

  • 60 or 90 minutes, fixed slot on Gulf Standard Time
  • Practice taken from the student's own syllabus code
  • Marked against the mark scheme, with the reasoning attached
  • Pauses for school assessment weeks

Double or triple science rotation

For a student carrying separate sciences or Co-ordinated Sciences who is behind across the board. Sessions rotate between subjects on a stated cycle rather than drifting to whichever one feels most urgent, so no subject gets quietly dropped over a term.

  • A written rotation agreed in advance, not improvised weekly
  • A topic-accuracy record kept separately per science
  • Practical-paper work scheduled deliberately, not left to the end
  • Rotation re-weighted monthly on marked evidence

Practical-paper and technique block

A short block aimed only at Cambridge Paper 5 or Paper 6, or at the practical-skills questions inside the Pearson theory papers. It is the most predictable component in the set and the one schools have least time to rehearse, which makes it unusually good value.

  • Tables, graph plotting and anomaly identification drilled directly
  • Variables, controls and suggested improvements practised as answer shapes
  • Past practical papers worked under timed conditions
  • No new theory content unless a gap surfaces

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Barsha South

01

Al Barsha South against Marina, JVC and Dubai Hills, side by side

  • Shortest school run of the four: Al Barsha South, by a clear margin
  • Widest spread of exam boards within one building: Jumeirah Village Circle
  • Latest realistic session start: Dubai Marina and JBR, from 5pm
  • Same papers, same morning, in all four areas

The comparison is worth doing properly because parents do it anyway, usually with worse information. Four things genuinely differ between these communities: the schools within reach, the exam boards those schools enter, what time a secondary student actually gets home, and the fee band of the local provision. Everything else that gets discussed - the quality of local tutors, the availability of specialists, whether one area is better served - turns out on inspection to be a function of who happens to live there this year, which is not a basis for a two-year plan.

Al Barsha South has the shortest school run of the four, because three established British-curriculum schools sit inside or on the edge of it. That produces the largest local Year 11 science cohort and, as a side effect, the most competition for the early-evening tutoring slot. Dubai Marina and JBR have the longest effective run despite being compact, because almost no secondary school sits inside the towers. Jumeirah Village has the widest spread of boards within a single building, which defeats any area-level assumption about what children there are sitting. Dubai Hills has the easiest afternoon and the highest fee band, and its science cohorts sit the same papers as everyone else.

Where this lands is a conclusion a location page is not supposed to reach: for IGCSE science, the neighbourhood is close to irrelevant. What matters is the syllabus code, the tier, and whether the tutor knows the specific paper. A family in Dubai Hills and a family in Al Barsha South whose children both sit Cambridge 0654 Extended need identical work, and a family in Al Barsha South whose child sits Pearson 4PH1 needs different work from their next-door neighbour on Cambridge 0625. The useful question is never where the tutor is. It is which paper they have marked.

Which science route your child is on, and why the label hides it

  • Separate sciences: three codes, three grades, three sets of papers
  • Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 is a Double Award counting as two IGCSEs
  • Cambridge adds a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper; Pearson does not
  • The board, code and tier are printed on the exam entry confirmation

Science is the subject where the label on the school report tells a parent least. Three different routes sit under it. Separate sciences means three syllabuses and three grades. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 is a Double Award: one course, one grade, counted as two IGCSEs for most purposes. Combined Science 0653 is a Single Award, one grade counting once. A parent who knows only that their child does science cannot tell which of the three they are on, and all three have different papers.

Boards differ as much as routes. Cambridge separate sciences run a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper at the entered tier, and then either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper. The practical component is worth roughly a fifth of the grade, and because it is partly predictable - tables, graph plotting, anomalies, variables, suggested improvements - it is the cheapest component in the entire set to improve. Pearson's International GCSE sciences, 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, take a different approach: there is no separate practical or alternative-to-practical paper, and practical understanding is examined inside the theory papers instead.

That single difference changes what revision should look like. A Cambridge 0625 student who never practises Paper 6 is leaving a fifth of their grade to chance on a paper that rehearses almost identically every series. A Pearson 4PH1 student who spends sessions on alternative-to-practical questions is practising for a paper they will not sit. Both students look diligent and only one is aimed correctly. Finding out which applies costs nothing: the board, the syllabus code and the tier appear on the school's exam entry confirmation, and that document is the single most useful thing a parent can forward before a first session.

Where science marks go: the same four leaks in every neighbourhood

  • Command-term mismatch: the right idea in the wrong answer shape
  • Unclaimed method marks in multi-step calculations
  • The Cambridge practical paper left unrehearsed, worth about a fifth
  • Diagram marks lost to missing construction lines, arrows and labels

Mark a set of IGCSE science papers from four different Dubai communities and the pattern does not sort by postcode. It sorts by habit. Four leaks account for most of the avoidable loss, and they appear in the same proportions whether the student lives in a Marina tower or an Al Barsha South villa.

The first is command-term mismatch. Describe, explain, suggest, compare and calculate each demand a different answer shape, and a correct idea written as a description where an explanation was wanted earns nothing. The second is the unclaimed working mark: multi-step calculations in physics and chemistry carry method marks, and a student who writes only the final answer forfeits them whenever the arithmetic slips. The third is the practical paper nobody rehearsed, which on Cambridge routes is roughly a fifth of the grade sitting untouched. The fourth is the diagram mark: ray diagrams need construction lines and arrows, genetic crosses need allele symbols defined, and circuit answers need the component named rather than pointed at.

What makes this useful is that all four are habits rather than knowledge gaps, which means they move fast. Command terms respond to about three weeks of consistent correction. Working marks respond to the student marking their own script against the official scheme aloud. The practical paper responds to four or five past papers worked under timed conditions. Diagram marks respond to a checklist. None of this requires re-teaching content, which is why a student whose mocks came back lower than their topic tests can often recover a meaningful part of that gap without learning a single new fact.

What science tutoring costs across these four areas

  • Cheapest published online rates: Tutopiya from AED 33-52, EdFlik from AED 45-65
  • Syllabus-specific support sits at AED 150-300 per hour across published rates
  • In-home AED 180-500 reflects travel, not better teaching
  • KHDA confirmed no Dubai private school fee rise for 2026-27 on 22 May 2026

Take the market from the bottom up, since that is the end most families start at. The cheapest published online rates in Dubai are Tutopiya's, from AED 33 to 52 an hour, and EdFlik's, from AED 45 to 65. At that level the tutor is typically a university student, and what the money buys is supervision and homework company rather than syllabus-code knowledge. For a Year 9 student who simply will not sit down, that may be exactly the right purchase. For a Year 11 student on Cambridge 0654 Extended eight weeks from a paper, it is not.

The next band up is where IGCSE science support actually lives. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above. The step from the budget band into this one is the step from someone who can help with homework to someone who knows which paper your child sits and what its mark scheme rewards. Above it, BartyED publishes AED 650 for premium examiner-led work, which buys scarcity; whether it buys more than that depends on the individual and on whether the credential can actually be evidenced.

Separately, the travel line. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 and home tutors up to AED 500, against the same providers' online bands for comparable tutors. The difference is the car. Monthly packages visible in this market run AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions, and Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly hour are AED 240 to 600 budget, AED 600 to 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year work. Those figures are each provider's own published numbers as of October 2026, not IB Gram's. Worth noting against them that KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27, so a tutoring line added this year is not landing on top of a fee increase. IB Gram publishes no rate card on this page; the free trial lesson comes first.

Online against in-home, judged on the science rather than on convenience

  • IB Gram delivers UAE lessons online; home visits are an India-only service
  • The Cambridge practical paper is a written paper, rehearsed on paper either way
  • Diagram conventions are easier to correct on a shared whiteboard
  • In-home buys apparatus and presence; online buys the specialist and a recording

Stated plainly: IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Lessons for UAE families are delivered one to one over live video, and visiting tutors are a service we run only in India. That needs saying on a page reached by searching for someone local, and the comparison then deserves to be made honestly rather than argued backwards from the limitation.

The in-home case for science is real in one specific respect: physical apparatus. A tutor in the room can put a thermometer, a measuring cylinder or a circuit in a student's hands, and for a nervous Year 10 that has value. What it cannot do is widen the pool. An in-home tutor has to live within a workable drive of the student and be free in the hour after the school bus, and across all four of the neighbourhoods compared above that narrows the field sharply once you add the requirement of knowing Cambridge 0654 Extended Paper 6 or Pearson 4CH1 specifically.

For the components that carry the marks, video turns out to be a close substitute. The Cambridge practical paper is a written paper about practical work, not a practical, so it is rehearsed on paper either way. Graph plotting, anomaly identification and variable control are all screen-shareable. Diagram conventions are easier to correct on a shared whiteboard than over a student's shoulder, because both parties are looking at the same magnified line. And sessions can be recorded, so a student can rewatch an electrolysis explanation at the point they lost it. The honest trade is this: in-home buys apparatus and presence from a smaller local pool at a travel premium; online buys the specialist in the exact paper, plus a recording, and asks the family for a desk and an open door.

The series, the zone, and counting backwards from the papers

  • Cambridge: June and November for UAE candidates; February/March is India only
  • Every Cambridge centre sits in one of six timetable zones
  • Pearson November 2026: late October to 19 November 2026
  • The last eight to ten weeks are technique, not new content

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two. The February and March series exists but is offered to India only, which means any revision plan pointing at a spring exam window has been built for the wrong country. Cambridge also allocates every examination centre to one of six administrative zones, states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the centre's zone, and says it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone timetable. That is the school's responsibility, but it is a fair question to ask at a parents' evening.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE examinations run in May/June and November each year. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, with results reaching students in January; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, and June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, including for later years, which is exactly why every date here should be confirmed against the live official timetable rather than taken from a tutoring page.

The planning value is in the backwards count. Working from the first paper: the final eight to ten weeks are technique and timed papers, because content learned in that window is unreliable under pressure. The term before that is the last efficient period for closing genuine content gaps. Mocks sit before that again and are the first honest signal of the grade. Entry and tier decisions sit earliest of all and are the ones with the longest consequences, since a Core or Foundation entry caps the grade regardless of how well the student performs on the day. A family in any of these four neighbourhoods starting in September has a content term and a technique term. A family starting in March for a June series has a technique term only, and the plan should say so rather than pretend otherwise.

KHDA, permits and the two checks worth making before you pay anyone

  • Read the KHDA report's secondary science attainment line, not the headline band
  • MoHRE private tuition work permit: free, two years, two working days
  • No published fine schedule exists for tutoring without a permit
  • Ask to see the permit itself rather than a listing or a screenshot

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects annually and publishes a report per school across six bands from Outstanding to Very Weak, broken down by subject and phase. For a family comparing schools across Al Barsha South, Jumeirah Village and Dubai Hills, those reports are the only independent evidence available, and the secondary-science attainment line is the one that matters for a Year 11 student. Context: Dubai had 387,441 private-school students across 227 private schools in 2024-25 offering 17 curricula, with seven new schools opening for 2026-27 creating 16,846 places after enrolment rose 6% during 2025-26.

The second check is the tutor's permit. Private tuition in the UAE is regulated: the MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time via the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. u.ae states that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit will be subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so any amount quoted to you is invented.

Two related points. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the permit holder's own school; these are press-reported positions worth verifying against the current policy document, but the direction is clear and applies to the convenient option of hiring your child's own science teacher. And an operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram runs no UAE centre and holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, MoHRE, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB.

Honesty boundaries, and what we will not do with your child's work

  • A tutor teaches and marks; the student produces every piece of assessed work
  • No sitting in on timed school assessments, ever
  • Past papers and mark schemes are linked to the board, never redistributed
  • Buying completed coursework puts the student at risk, not the seller

IGCSE sciences at both boards are examined by written paper, which removes most of the coursework risk that shadows Diploma and A Level tutoring. The boundary still matters, because students in this cluster often carry subjects that do involve assessed work, and because the practical components invite a particular kind of shortcut. The rule we apply everywhere: a tutor teaches, explains, marks and gives feedback on work the student has produced. A tutor does not produce the work.

In practice that means a tutor may work a past-paper question through with a student, mark their attempt against the published scheme, explain exactly which line earned which mark, set comparable questions on different material, and model a method on a question the student is not submitting. A tutor may not sit with a student during a timed school assessment, supply answers to anything that will be handed in, write or part-write coursework, or edit a piece of work into a submittable state. Providers in this market sell completed Internal Assessments. That is an integrity breach, the consequences land on the student rather than the seller, and it is not something IB Gram offers at any price.

There is a second boundary around materials, and for a science family it is reassuring rather than restrictive. We reference Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables and link to the board's own page; we do not reproduce or supply them as downloads. Everything a student needs for 0610, 0620, 0625, 0654, 4BI1, 4CH1 or 4PH1 preparation is published free by the board itself. What a good tutor adds is knowing which question to set next and how to mark it honestly, which is not something a private library can substitute for.

09

Getting started, and what we will tell you that others will not

  • Forward the exam entry confirmation: board, syllabus code and tier
  • The free trial is a marked section of the correct past paper
  • If no code-specific specialist is free, we say so and set out the options
  • Some problems are school conversations, not tutoring contracts

The first step is a free trial lesson, and it begins with one document: the school's exam entry confirmation, which carries the board, the syllabus code and the tier. With that in hand the trial becomes a diagnostic rather than a demonstration. The student works a section of the correct past paper live, the tutor marks it against the published scheme while the student watches, and the four leaks are counted. What a parent receives afterwards is a topic-accuracy list and a straight view on whether one science or three need support, and whether one session a week or two is the right place to start.

Matching takes a few days rather than minutes, because the match is to a code. Cambridge 0620 Extended, 0625 Extended and 0654 requests fill quickly, as do the main Pearson codes. The requests that stall are narrower: a Single Award route combined with a specific practical-paper focus and one fixed slot, for instance. When that happens we say so. The options are to wait a week, to move the slot, or to begin with a strong generalist on a clearly stated interim basis, and we will tell you which one is on the table rather than placing someone and describing them as a specialist.

One more thing worth saying on a page built around a comparison. If after reading this you conclude that your child's science problem is really a school-fit problem, or a timetable problem, or a tier-entry problem, then the right next step is a conversation with the school rather than a tutoring contract. Tier entry in particular is a school decision with a hard consequence - a capped grade - and it deserves marked evidence rather than a tutor's reassurance. We would rather tell a family that before they pay for a month of lessons than after.

Where we tutor

Al Barsha South measured against the areas around it

These are the communities a family in Al Barsha South would realistically compare themselves against, with what genuinely differs in each. All are served at the same session time, because an online lesson has no drive attached at either end.

Al Barsha South 1-5

Villas and townhouses nearest the Mall of the Emirates corridor, apartments further towards Arjan. Three established British-curriculum schools within a short run, which makes the local Year 11 science cohort large and the 4.30pm slot the most contested one.

Dubai Marina and JBR

Vertical and transient, with almost no secondary provision inside the towers. Most students are bussed inland, so they get home later than their Al Barsha South peers and the realistic earliest session start is 5pm.

Jumeirah Village Circle

Apartment-dense and mixed, with families across a wide fee range in the same building. The practical consequence is that three neighbours' children can sit three different science routes, so no area-level assumption about the board holds.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Villas and townhouses with their own school provision, feeding both Cambridge and Pearson cohorts. A short distance to Al Barsha South on the map and a slow one at 3.30pm, which is where the travel premium comes from.

Dubai Hills Estate

Lower density, higher fee band, newer schools, and an easier afternoon run than any of the above. Students here sit the same papers on the same morning as Al Barsha South students, which makes shared diagnostics directly comparable.

JLT and Al Sufouh

Along the Sheikh Zayed Road spine, serving long-established schools towards the coast. Cross-town movement between here and Al Barsha South at 4pm is the clearest local argument against any arrangement that involves a car.

Al Barsha Heights and Dubai Internet City

High-rise living with many parents working within walking distance. Evening slots at 7pm fill faster here than afternoon ones, because a parent wants to be present for the first few science sessions.

Arjan and Dubai Science Park

South-west of Al Barsha South 5, residential and still filling out. Local supply of IGCSE science specialists by code is thin, which is where the online pool changes what is available rather than what it costs.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Barsha South

Al Barsha South and Al Barsha

The schools in and on the edge of Al Barsha South run both Cambridge and Pearson science routes, and in some cases separate sciences for one set and a Double Award for another. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; naming them is local context and implies no relationship.

  • GEMS Founders School - Al Barsha
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Safa Community School
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • American School of Dubai
  • Al Mawakeb School - Al Barsha
  • Dubai National School - Al Barsha

Dubai Marina, JBR and JLT

The comparison cluster to the west, where few schools sit inside the residential towers and most students travel inland. Useful for a parent judging whether a different area would genuinely offer a different standard of science teaching.

  • Emirates International School - Meadows
  • Regent International School
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai College

Jumeirah Village and Dubai Hills

The two newer comparison clusters, with their own provision and a different fee band. Science cohorts here sit the same series as Al Barsha South, which is what makes the areas genuinely comparable rather than only adjacent.

  • Arcadia School
  • Sunmarke School
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • GEMS Wellington Academy - Al Khail
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • GEMS Metropole School

Schools are named to describe the education ecosystem across Al Barsha South and the neighbouring communities. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership, endorsement or approval from any school, group, examination board or regulator named here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Forward the exam entry confirmation

That one document carries the board, the syllabus code and the tier, which is everything needed to match the right tutor and set the right practice. A school report describes the student; the entry confirmation describes the paper they will actually sit, and only one of those decides the plan.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson as a diagnostic

A live online session where the student works a section of the correct past paper and the tutor marks it against the published scheme in front of them. The output is a topic-accuracy list plus a count of the four avoidable leaks, written up and sent to you afterwards.

  3. 03

Decide how many sciences and in what rotation

One subject weekly, or a stated rotation across two or three. The rotation is written down in advance so no science quietly disappears over a term, and it is re-weighted monthly on marked evidence rather than on which subject feels most urgent that week.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions, practice from the right code

Work set from the student's own syllabus and tier, so a Pearson candidate is not drilling Cambridge alternative-to-practical questions. Everything is marked with the mark-scheme reasoning attached, because a score alone teaches nothing about what the examiner rewards.

  5. 05

    Schedule the practical component deliberately

On Cambridge routes the practical test or alternative-to-practical paper is worth roughly a fifth of the grade and is the most rehearsable paper in the set. It gets its own block rather than being left to the final fortnight, where most schools are forced to leave it.

  6. 06

    Monthly re-mark and plan review

A fresh paper section sat timed and classified the same way as the trial. If the habit leaks have closed and the content has not, teaching takes a larger share. If content is closing and timing is not, the balance moves to timed papers. The plan follows the evidence.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We match to a syllabus code, not to the word science

Cambridge separate sciences, Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 and the Pearson suite examine different things, and only one of them has an alternative-to-practical paper. A tutor who treats all IGCSE science as one subject will set practice for a paper your child is not sitting.

The practical component is treated as a real component

On Cambridge routes it carries about a fifth of the grade and rehearses almost identically each series, which makes it the cheapest marks in the whole course to recover. It gets scheduled deliberately rather than squeezed into the last fortnight.

We will tell you the neighbourhood does not matter

This page compares Al Barsha South with Marina, Jumeirah Village and Dubai Hills and concludes that the areas differ in commute and fee band, not in what a science student needs. A location page that reaches a more flattering conclusion is selling geography.

Online delivery, stated before you pay

UAE lessons are one to one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; visiting tutors are an India-only service. Saying it here means no family discovers it after a first month's fees have been taken.

Honest about availability by code

Mainstream codes fill in a few days. For a narrow combination we say when nobody suitable is free rather than placing a generalist and calling it a specialist match. No competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit at all.

No borrowed credentials and no invented numbers

You will find no promised grade, no satisfaction percentage, no self-awarded rating and no claim of approval by KHDA, Cambridge or Pearson on this page, because IB Gram holds none of those. Every AED figure here is attributed to whoever published it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Barsha South: your questions answered

Would my child get a better science tutor in Dubai Marina or Dubai Hills than in Al Barsha South?+

No, and the comparison is worth making rather than dismissing. These communities genuinely differ in school options, commute and fee band: Al Barsha South has the shortest school run and the largest local cohort, Marina has almost no secondary provision inside its towers, Jumeirah Village spreads several exam boards across single buildings, and Dubai Hills has the easiest afternoon. None of that changes what a science student needs, which is a tutor who knows their exact syllabus code and tier. Proximity is the one variable in this subject that carries no educational value.

What is the difference between separate sciences, Double Award and Combined Science?+

Separate sciences means three syllabuses and three grades - for Cambridge, Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 is a Double Award: one course, one grade, counted as two IGCSEs. Combined Science 0653 is a Single Award counting once. The routes cover overlapping content at different depths and sit different papers, and they also carry different implications for sixth-form entry, since some A Level science courses prefer the separate route. Check which one your child is entered for on the school's exam entry confirmation rather than assuming from the timetable.

Does my child sit a practical exam for IGCSE science in Dubai?+

It depends on the board. Cambridge separate sciences and Co-ordinated Sciences include either a practical test or a written alternative-to-practical paper, worth roughly a fifth of the grade. Pearson Edexcel's International GCSE sciences take a different approach and assess practical understanding inside the written theory papers, with no separate practical component. This distinction decides what revision should look like: a Cambridge candidate who never practises the alternative-to-practical paper is leaving a fifth of the grade unrehearsed, and a Pearson candidate practising those papers is preparing for an exam they will not sit.

Which single science component is easiest to improve quickly?+

On Cambridge routes, the practical test or alternative-to-practical paper, without much competition. It is worth about a fifth of the grade and it rehearses almost identically each series: tables with correct headings and units, graph plotting and line of best fit, identifying an anomaly, naming independent and control variables, and suggesting an improvement that would actually address a named problem. Four or five past practical papers worked under timed conditions will move it, and most schools are too pressed for curriculum time to drill it properly. It is the cheapest set of marks in the course.

My child's topic tests are fine but the mock paper was poor. What is happening?+

Usually habit rather than knowledge. Topic tests examine one idea in a familiar format; a full paper examines command terms, timing, diagram conventions and multi-step working all at once. Four leaks account for most of the gap: answering a describe question when explain was asked, writing a final answer with no working so method marks go unclaimed, leaving diagram marks on the table through missing arrows and labels, and running out of time on the last pages. All four respond to a few weeks of correction without any new content, which is why this kind of drop is often the fastest to recover.

How much should I expect to pay for IGCSE science tutoring in this part of Dubai?+

Published Dubai rates spread very widely. The cheapest online bands are Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, typically university-student tutors offering supervision rather than syllabus knowledge. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270, and Bestimate's 2026 table puts IGCSE, IB and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, with in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350. BartyED publishes AED 650 for premium examiner-led work. Those are each provider's own figures, not IB Gram's; we run a free trial first.

Can one tutor cover all three sciences for my child?+

Sometimes, and it is worth being sceptical. A tutor with a genuine background in one science can usually teach IGCSE level in a second competently, and the third is where claims start to stretch. For a student on Co-ordinated Sciences 0654, a single well-matched tutor is often the right arrangement because the course itself is integrated. For a student on three separate sciences who is behind in all three, two tutors with a written rotation generally works better than one covering everything. Ask which science the tutor actually studied beyond school level.

Does IB Gram send a science tutor to our home in Al Barsha South or JVC?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; visiting tutors are a service we run only in India. UAE lessons are delivered one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For science the in-home advantage is apparatus in the student's hands, which is real for a nervous younger student. Against that, the Cambridge practical paper is itself a written paper about practical work, so it is rehearsed on paper either way, and widening past the drive is what makes a code-specific specialist available at all.

When do IGCSE science exams happen for a student in Dubai?+

Cambridge International runs IGCSE examinations in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those. The February and March series is offered to India only, so a plan built around a spring window is built for another country. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026 and results reaching students in January. Cambridge also allocates each centre to one of six timetable zones and warns that the correct zone version must be used. Confirm every date on the board's live timetable.

Is Year 10 or Year 11 the better time to start science tutoring?+

Year 10, for a reason that has nothing to do with selling more lessons. Year 10 is the only period when learning new content is genuinely efficient, because there is time for it to settle and be tested twice. By the middle of Year 11 most schools have finished the content and moved to revision, so a gap that opens then will not be retaught and the tutoring has to run two tracks at once. Starting in Year 10 also means the tier decision - Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher - can be made on evidence from marked papers rather than on a guess.

How do I check that a science tutor is legally allowed to work in Dubai?+

Ask to see the permit, not a profile. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is issued through MoHRE's own Private Tutor Licensing service with no fee and a stated two-working-day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. u.ae states that tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no schedule is published, so any specific figure quoted at you is invented.

Why does the exam entry confirmation matter more than the school report?+

Because the report describes your child and the entry confirmation describes the examination. It carries the board, the syllabus code and the tier, and those three facts decide what practice is useful. A Pearson 4CH1 candidate and a Cambridge 0620 Extended candidate taking the same lessons are being prepared for different papers, and one of them is being prepared wrongly. The confirmation also reveals a capped entry early enough to challenge it: a Core or Foundation entry limits the grade regardless of performance, and that is a school conversation worth having in Year 10.

Can we pause science sessions during school exams or over the summer?+

Yes, and we would usually recommend it. A student sitting internal examinations does not gain from a tutoring session the same evening, so sessions pause and the slot is held rather than lost. Summer works the same way, with the exception of students entering Year 11 who have a known content gap, where a short summer block is genuinely more efficient than trying to close it alongside term-time revision. Sessions also shift to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan for families who prefer it. The one period we advise against pausing is the eight weeks before the papers.

What if the problem turns out to be the school rather than my child?+

Then we will say so, and the right next step is the school rather than a tutoring contract. KHDA inspects every Dubai private school annually and publishes a report broken down by subject and phase, so a school rated Good overall may be rated Acceptable for secondary science attainment, and a note that internal assessment data does not match external outcomes explains a predicted grade that never arrives. Dubai had 227 private schools in 2024-25 with seven more opening for 2026-27, so department-level variation between neighbouring schools is normal rather than scandalous.

What happens if no tutor is free for my child's exact syllabus code?+

We tell you rather than substituting quietly. The mainstream codes - Cambridge 0620 and 0625 Extended, 0654, the main Pearson suite - usually match within a few days. The requests that stall are narrow: a Single Award route combined with a practical-paper focus and one fixed evening slot, for instance. The honest options then are to wait a week, to move the slot, or to start with a strong generalist on a clearly stated interim basis. What we will not do is place a general science tutor and present them as a code specialist, which is standard practice in this market.

Send the entry confirmation, and let the paper decide the plan

If your child is sitting IGCSE sciences at a school in or near Al Barsha South, the comparison with Marina, Jumeirah Village or Dubai Hills is worth making and will not change the answer. What changes the answer is the syllabus code on the exam entry confirmation. Forward that document, and the free trial lesson becomes a diagnostic on the correct paper: a marked section, a topic-accuracy list, and a count of the four avoidable leaks. Lessons run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time, matched to the code rather than to the postcode. No grade promises, no rate card before you have seen the teaching, and a straight answer if the right specialist is not free this week.
