IGCSE Tutor near me in Al Barsha South

Searching for an IGCSE tutor near me in Al Barsha South usually returns a map pin and a phone number, not a syllabus code. This page does the opposite. It names the specifications your child is actually sitting, the command terms their mark scheme pays for, and the papers worth practising between now and the June series. Lessons from Al Barsha South, Arjan and Dubai Science Park run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so the person teaching Cambridge 0580 Extended is chosen for knowing 0580, not for living two streets away.

  • Tutors matched by syllabus code, not by postcode or driving distance
  • One-to-one lessons over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time
  • Mark-scheme marking taught explicitly, paper by paper
  • A free trial lesson before any payment or commitment is made

IB & IGCSE in Al Barsha South

What a near-me search cannot tell you about an IGCSE tutor

An IGCSE tutor near me in Al Barsha South is a search about geography, but the thing that decides your child's grade is a four-digit number. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is 0580. Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics is 0607. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A is 4MA1. Three courses with almost the same name, sat by children in the same building, with different papers, different calculator rules and different grading scales. A tutor who is twelve minutes away and teaches the wrong one of those three is worse value than a specialist on a screen who has marked the right one for a decade.

Al Barsha South sits behind Al Barsha 1 and Dubai Science Park, with Arjan to the south and Jumeirah Village Circle beyond that. The children living here attend schools across half of New Dubai: some walk into Nord Anglia International School Dubai or Dwight School Dubai, others take a bus towards Al Barsha 1, Motor City or JVC. That spread is exactly why the tutor pool question is the wrong question. A community of villa clusters and mid-rise apartment blocks does not contain a resident expert in Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 Paper 6, and nothing about living nearby makes a generalist into one.

So this page is written from the syllabus rather than from the street. It lists the codes, because a parent who can say "she sits 0580 Extended, Paper 2 and Paper 4" gets a better tutor in a shorter time than a parent who says "she needs maths help". It sets out the command terms, because the difference between a 6 and an 8 in most IGCSE subjects is not knowledge but reading what the question asked for. And it explains how to mark a past paper against the real mark scheme, which is the single cheapest thing a family can do without paying anybody.

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to any school, group or examination board. Tutoring for families in Al Barsha South is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. That is stated plainly here because the alternative is a page that sells a product it cannot deliver, and because the online model is what lets a child in Arjan work with someone who knows 0607 rather than someone who knows the way to Arjan.

What follows is the technical half of the decision: which specification, which papers, which traps, and what the market charges for someone who genuinely knows them. The commercial half is short. There is a free trial lesson, a stated subject and level, and an honest answer about availability when a niche specification has nobody free.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Barsha South children sit IGCSE under two main awarding bodies and arrive at it from several different middle-years routes. The three programmes below are the ones that actually appear on report cards in this part of Dubai, with what each means for the tutoring plan.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

The larger of the two IGCSE routes in Dubai by entry volume. Cambridge publishes a syllabus document per subject with a four-digit code, a defined assessment structure, and specimen papers with mark schemes. Most subjects offer a Core and an Extended tier, and the tier chosen at entry sets the ceiling on the grade available. Some subjects are graded A*-G and the newer 0990-series equivalents are graded 9-1, which matters when a school report shows a mix of both.

Cambridge runs June and November series for UAE centres and allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own timetable version. Cambridge states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used, so the version your child's school in Al Barsha or JVC publishes is the only one worth working from.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Pearson's international specifications carry codes such as 4MA1 for Mathematics A, 4PH1 for Physics and 4EA1 for English Language A. Grading is 9-1 throughout. Mathematics A splits into Foundation and Higher tiers, with both Higher papers calculator-permitted, which produces a very different preparation plan from the Cambridge pattern. Several Al Barsha and JVC schools run Pearson for maths and sciences while using Cambridge elsewhere.

Pearson runs May/June and November series. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables well ahead, so always open the live official PDF rather than trusting a restated date.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme, as the route into IGCSE

Several IB continuum schools near Al Barsha South run the MYP to age 16 instead of IGCSE, and a minority of families move a child from MYP into a Year 10 IGCSE cohort. The transfer is harder than the year numbers suggest: MYP assessment is criterion-related, marked against four criteria per subject out of 8 each, while IGCSE is a timed terminal paper scored against a mark scheme. The skills overlap less than parents expect.

A child moving from MYP 4 into Year 10 IGCSE in Al Barsha South typically needs targeted work on timed paper technique and command-term reading rather than on content. We plan that transfer as a defined block of lessons with a specification document open on screen, and we say so when the gap is wide enough to need two terms rather than six weeks.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below is listed with the codes Al Barsha South cohorts actually sit and the place the marks tend to leak. These are the specifications our tutors work from directly, with the published assessment structure rather than a summary of it.

Mathematics (0580 · 4MA1)

Core / Extended · Foundation / Higher

Since the 2025 Cambridge syllabus, 0580 Extended candidates sit a non-calculator Paper 2 and a calculator Paper 4, each two hours and 100 marks. Pearson 4MA1 Higher allows a calculator on both papers. Marks are lost in algebraic manipulation, bounds and transformations of graphs, and in method shown too briefly to earn the method mark.

International Mathematics (0607)

Core / Extended

Built around a graphics calculator and carrying an investigation component as well as the written papers. Students arriving from a 0580 class find the calculator expectations unfamiliar and the investigation paper genuinely different work. Preparation has to include the calculator itself, not just the mathematics.

Physics (0625 · 4PH1)

Core / Extended · Higher

Electricity, moments and the practical paper carry the most lost marks in Dubai cohorts. Cambridge 0625 Paper 6 is the alternative-to-practical route most UAE centres use, and it rewards knowing apparatus, variables and sources of error rather than recalling content. It is the most improvable fifth of the grade.

Chemistry (0620 · 4CH1)

Core / Extended · Higher

Moles and stoichiometry, electrolysis and organic chemistry account for most of the gap between a 6 and an 8. The qualitative-analysis tables in 0620 are memorisable and routinely under-prepared, which makes them one of the fastest mark gains available in the subject.

Biology (0610 · 4BI1)

Core / Extended · Higher

The failure mode here is almost never knowledge. It is command terms: a question asking to explain receives a description, and the mark scheme pays nothing for it. Transport in plants, homeostasis and inheritance diagrams are the recurring content weak points in Al Barsha South cohorts.

Co-ordinated Sciences (0654)

Double Award · Extended

One double-award grade covering biology, chemistry and physics, sat by students who need science breadth without three separate grades. The content is narrower than three separate sciences but the papers still mix all three, so a single weak discipline drags the whole award.

English First Language (0500 · 0990)

Extended

Reading response and directed writing carry the structure marks most students lose. 0500 is graded A*-G, 0990 is graded 9-1, and the assessment pattern differs between syllabus versions, so working from the correct syllabus document matters more in English than in most subjects.

English as a Second Language (0510 · 0511 · 0993)

Core / Extended

A different qualification from First Language English, with speaking assessed separately and a reading paper that rewards precise lifting of detail. Students placed in ESL who could sit First Language, and the reverse, are a recurring misplacement in Dubai schools worth checking early.

Economics (0455) and Business Studies (0450)

Core / Extended

Both are won on command terms and on using the data in the case study. Analyse and evaluate questions carry the largest mark allocations and the most predictable losses, because students write description where the mark scheme wants a chain of reasoning and a judgement.

Computer Science (0478) and ICT (0417)

Extended

0478 pairs theory with a pre-release practical task; 0417 is dominated by practical application work. Students confuse the two courses and the tutoring they need. Pseudocode conventions and trace tables are where the theory paper marks sit in 0478.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every request that comes from Al Barsha South, and the right one depends on how far through the specification your child is rather than on budget alone.

Weekly one-to-one on a single specification

One subject, one syllabus code, one tutor, same slot each week. The tutor works through the specification content list in the school's teaching order and keeps a running record of which statements are secure. This is the format that fixes a grade over two terms rather than two weeks, and it is what most Year 10 families in Al Barsha South start with.

  • Syllabus content list used as the tracking document
  • Session notes naming the specification statements covered
  • Homework set from official past papers only
  • Delivered online over live video, one-to-one

Timed-paper clinic

For Year 11 students who know the content and lose marks under exam conditions. The student sits a full timed paper alone, then the session is spent marking it against the official mark scheme line by line. Most students have never seen a mark scheme for their own script, and the first time they do it changes how they answer.

  • Paper sat under real timing before the lesson
  • Marking done by the student, with the tutor challenging each decision
  • A written list of the specific mark types being dropped
  • Typically a six to ten week block, not an open-ended arrangement

Short diagnostic block

Two or three lessons to establish what is actually wrong before anybody commits to a term. The output is a written diagnosis: the specification, the tier, the papers, the topics that are insecure and the question types being lost. Some families stop there and fix it themselves, which is a legitimate outcome and one we would rather you reached cheaply.

  • Confirms the exact syllabus code and tier of entry
  • Separates a content gap from a question-reading gap
  • Produces a written plan a parent can act on without us
  • Begins with a free trial lesson

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Barsha South

01

Which syllabus codes an Al Barsha South child is actually sitting

Before anything else, find the code. It is printed on the exam entry confirmation, on most school assessment policies and on the top of every past paper the school hands out. A four-digit Cambridge number or a Pearson code beginning with 4 tells a tutor more in two seconds than a half-hour conversation about how the term has gone.

The reason it matters this much is that the same subject name hides materially different exams. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 and Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics 0607 differ on calculator policy, on paper structure and on whether an investigation component exists at all. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1 differs again, allowing a calculator on both Higher papers. A student who has spent eight weeks practising non-calculator technique for a specification that does not have a non-calculator paper has spent eight weeks badly.

Science is the same story at a slightly lower volume. Cambridge separates Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610, offers Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 as a double award and Combined Science 0653 as a single award, and the practical component differs across them. Pearson runs 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1 with a different internal structure. The table below is the one we fill in during the first lesson, and a parent who fills it in beforehand buys themselves a lesson's worth of value.

One caution on grading scales. Cambridge subjects exist in A*-G and 9-1 versions, and Pearson international specifications are 9-1 throughout. A school report showing a predicted 7 means something different depending on which scale is in use, and parents comparing two children in two schools in Al Barsha South are frequently comparing nothing at all.

Command terms, and the marks they quietly hand out

  • State and give want a bare fact, and extra prose cannot gain a mark but can lose time
  • Calculate requires working, because the method mark survives an arithmetic slip
  • Suggest signals an unfamiliar context where applied reasoning, not recall, is being tested
  • Compare requires both sides in the same sentence, not one paragraph each

Most IGCSE marks that go missing in Dubai cohorts are not missing because the student did not know the content. They are missing because the question said explain and the student described, or said compare and the student listed. The command term is an instruction about the shape of the answer, and every mark scheme is built around it.

This is learnable in a way content is not. A student who has internalised that explain requires a because, that describe wants observable features without causes, that analyse wants a chain of linked consequences and that evaluate demands a judgement with a reason, picks up marks across every subject at once. It is the highest-leverage single thing a tutor can teach a Year 10 student in Al Barsha South, and it is almost never taught explicitly in a classroom of twenty-four.

The mechanism is simple enough to do at home. Take any past paper the school has issued, cover the question, read only the mark scheme, and work out what the question must have asked for. Then read the question. The gap between what a student assumed was wanted and what the mark scheme pays for is the thing worth working on, and it is visible within one paper.

The table below lists the terms that appear most often across the specifications Al Barsha South children sit, with the error that costs the mark. It is deliberately short. Four command terms learned properly beat twenty skimmed.

COMMAND TERMS AND WHAT THE MARK SCHEME PAYS FOR
Command termWhat the mark scheme wantsThe answer that scores zero
DescribeObservable features or trends, no causes requiredAn explanation of why, with the trend itself never stated
ExplainA reason linked to the point with a because or thereforeA restated description with no causal link
AnalyseA linked chain of consequences, each step statedA list of separate points with no connection between them
EvaluateBoth sides plus a judgement supported by a reasonTwo balanced paragraphs with no conclusion offered
SuggestApplied reasoning in an unfamiliar contextRecall of a taught example that does not fit the context given
CompareSimilarities and differences expressed in the same sentenceOne description followed by another, with no comparison made
03

Core or Extended, and the decision that caps a grade

Cambridge offers most IGCSE subjects at two tiers. Core covers less content and the grades available run from C to G. Extended covers the full content and opens A* to E. Pearson uses Foundation and Higher tiers in Mathematics A to the same effect. The tier is set at entry, and entry closes months before the exam.

That timing is the part families miss. A child placed on Core in Year 10 because the first term went badly can be sitting a paper in Year 11 that cannot award the grade they now deserve. The school sets the entry, the school can usually change it before the deadline, and a parent who does not know the deadline exists cannot ask. The conversation to have with a head of department is in the autumn term of Year 11, not in the spring.

The reverse error is just as common and more damaging in the short run. A student pushed onto Extended who has not secured the Core content sits two papers with a third of the questions inaccessible, and the mock result that follows reads as a crisis rather than as a placement problem. The diagnostic question is not whether the child is capable; it is whether the foundational content is secure enough to spend Year 11 on the Extended material rather than on repairing Year 9.

Tutoring plans look different either side of that line. A Core candidate needs accuracy and completeness on a narrower body of content. An Extended candidate needs the harder topics genuinely taught and then a long run of timed papers. Mixing the two produces a student who has seen everything and secured nothing, and it is the most common wasted term in this part of Dubai.

04

The non-calculator paper almost nobody practises

  • Confirm which papers in your child's specification forbid a calculator before planning revision
  • Practise surds, indices, standard form and fraction arithmetic by hand, in timed sets
  • On calculator papers, require a written estimate before the calculated value
  • Check that the school's internal assessments match the real calculator policy

Since the 2025 Cambridge Mathematics syllabus, 0580 Extended candidates sit a non-calculator Paper 2 of two hours and 100 marks alongside the calculator Paper 4. Core candidates sit the equivalent pair, Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 3 with one. Half the written marks in Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics are now available to a student who can do arithmetic, surds, indices and fractions by hand under time pressure.

Dubai cohorts are weak here for a structural reason. Calculators are permitted in most school assessments from Year 7, graphics calculators are standard in several nearby IB continuum schools, and a student can reach Year 10 having never been required to multiply decimals on paper at speed. The content is not hard. The fluency is absent, and fluency only comes back through repetition that nobody enjoys supervising.

A student on Pearson 4MA1 Higher has the opposite problem. Both Higher papers permit a calculator, so the risk moves from arithmetic to over-reliance: typing a calculation without an estimate to check it against, and writing down a value three orders of magnitude out without noticing. The fix there is estimation discipline rather than hand arithmetic, and a tutor who does not know which specification is in front of them will teach the wrong one.

Either way, this is work that suits a weekly slot and short daily practice rather than a block of intensive sessions in April. Ten minutes a day of mental arithmetic from the age of fourteen is worth more than any amount of revision in the last fortnight, and it is free.

05

Three English qualifications with one name, and the misplacement that follows

English is where Al Barsha South families most often discover their child is sitting a different exam from the one they assumed. Cambridge IGCSE English First Language exists as 0500, graded A*-G, and as 0990, graded 9-1. Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language runs as 0510, 0511 and 0993. Pearson offers English Language A as 4EA1. These are not difficulty levels of the same course; they are separate qualifications with separate papers.

The placement decision is usually made by a school in Year 9 on the basis of a reading assessment, and it is rarely revisited. A child who arrived in Dubai with limited English in Year 7 and is fluent by Year 10 may still be sitting ESL, which caps what universities and the Ministry of Education will later treat the qualification as demonstrating. The reverse happens too: a student placed on First Language who cannot yet access the reading passages loses marks across every paper.

For tutoring, the practical consequence is that the preparation diverges early. First Language rewards a directed-writing response with controlled register and a reading response that quotes precisely and comments on effect. ESL rewards accurate retrieval of detail and a narrower range of writing forms, with speaking assessed separately. A tutor teaching essay craft to an ESL candidate is teaching skills the mark scheme will not pay for.

The check is quick. Ask the school which code is on the entry, and ask to see one specimen paper. Ten minutes with the specimen tells a parent more about whether the placement is right than a term of reports will.

06

A past-paper sequence that is actually worth doing

Most students do past papers badly: open a paper, answer the questions they can, check the answers, feel reassured. That produces a measurement rather than a gain. The sequence below produces a gain, and it is the structure our tutors use for the final two terms of an IGCSE course.

The core idea is that a paper is worth doing three times in three different ways. Once untimed and open-book, to learn the question types. Once timed and closed, to measure. Once as a marking exercise on somebody else's script or your own, to learn what the examiner is paying for. Students who do five papers properly outperform students who do twenty-five badly, and the second group is much larger.

Official material only. Cambridge, Pearson and the schools themselves publish past papers and mark schemes, and those are what we work from. We do not reproduce or distribute syllabus documents, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; we cite them and link the official source so a family can open the current version themselves. Third-party question banks that paraphrase real papers teach the paraphrase.

The sequencing below is counted in weeks before the paper rather than in calendar dates, because the series your child sits depends on the school. For a UAE candidate, that is the Cambridge June series or the Pearson May/June series, with November as the resit route. The February/March Cambridge series is offered to India only and is not available to a Dubai centre.

What a syllabus specialist costs around Al Barsha South

Published rates in this market cluster into recognisable bands, and a parent can check most of them in ten minutes of searching. The cheapest advertised online tuition starts low: EdFlik lists from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52, which puts the budget online tier somewhere between AED 45 and 150. Those tutors are frequently university students, and for arithmetic fluency drills that can be the correct purchase.

Move up one step and you are paying for somebody who knows the specification rather than the subject. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, which maps onto a qualified-subject-tutor band of roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour online. Specialist IB, IGCSE and A-Level tutors run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting AED 270 and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table showing 200 to 450 plus. At the top, BartyED advertises AED 650 for a premium named tutor.

In-home visits sit between those two bands and on a different logic. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500, with travel built into the hour. Monthly packages advertised in Dubai include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support.

Those are market figures published by other providers with the date and source stated, not an IB Gram price list. What they show is that the premium for a true specification specialist is real but bounded, and that the premium for travel buys travel. For a family in Al Barsha South deciding between a nearby generalist at AED 180 and an online 0620 specialist at AED 250, the second is the cheaper way to buy a chemistry grade. Our own model starts with a free trial lesson and a quoted rate for the subject and level before anything is paid.

Who may legally tutor your child in Dubai, and how you check

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the MoHRE private tuition work permit, and the permit is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

An individual tutoring without that permit is, in the u.ae wording, subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount can honestly be quoted; a figure circulating online could not be verified against any ministry source. The useful point for a parent is that the permit costs the tutor nothing, which removes the only excuse for not holding one.

A tutoring operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal. That requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. IB Gram holds no such permit and makes no claim to one: we are an independent online tutor-matching platform with no UAE office, centre or branch, and no approval, accreditation or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson.

One more rule worth knowing. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Treat that as press-reported rather than verbatim policy and check the current document. Either way, a parent should never be offered their child's own class teacher privately, and an offer like that is a reason to walk away.

Starting from Al Barsha South, and the parts we will not promise

A useful enquiry from Al Barsha South contains four things: the syllabus code, the tier, the papers already sat and the specific thing going wrong. With those, a match is a short conversation. Without them, the first lesson is spent finding them out, which is a lesson you paid for to establish facts that were written on the entry confirmation.

The first lesson is free and diagnostic. The tutor works through recent script evidence if there is any, establishes which specification statements are insecure, and separates content gaps from question-reading gaps. At the end you get a written summary naming the papers, the topics and the mark types being lost. If the honest answer is that your child needs a better revision timetable rather than a tutor, we will say that; it costs us a sale and saves you a term.

Where we will not stretch the truth: lessons to Al Barsha South, Arjan and Dubai Science Park are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, and no tutor will arrive at a Dubai address. We publish no guaranteed grade, no score improvement figure and no satisfaction statistic, because none of those can be evidenced on a page. A tutor teaches, explains and gives feedback on your child's own work, and never writes the coursework or the investigation that must be the student's own.

On availability, the honest version is that a common combination such as 0580 Extended or 0620 is usually matched within a few days, and a narrow one such as 0607 Extended with the investigation paper, or a minority-language specification, can take longer or occasionally cannot be covered at all. We say so at the point of enquiry rather than matching you to whoever is free. The enquiry form collects the student's year group, school, subject, specification and a contact for the parent; it is used to make the match and nothing else, and you can ask for it to be deleted at any time.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Barsha South

Al Barsha South is a cluster of villa compounds and mid-rise blocks between Al Barsha 1, Dubai Science Park and Arjan, with no Metro station of its own. The notes below cover where families searching this phrase actually live and what it changes about scheduling a lesson.

Al Barsha South 1-4

Villa compounds and low-rise apartments, with school buses collecting early and returning anywhere between 15:20 and 16:10 depending on the route. A session at 16:45 is realistic on a weekday; a session at 16:00 usually is not.

Arjan

Dense newer apartment stock with a high proportion of Year 10 and 11 students bussed towards Al Barsha and Motor City. The return leg through Umm Suqeim Road at 15:30 is the constraint on an early slot here.

Dubai Science Park

Mixed residential and commercial towers where many parents work until 18:00. Evening sessions at 19:00 or 19:30 are the common pattern, and they suit timed-paper work better than an after-school slot does.

Al Barsha 1

The older, denser side of Al Barsha with several large schools inside walking distance. Shorter journeys mean a 16:15 start is sometimes workable, which matters when a family wants two sessions in one evening.

Jumeirah Village Circle

Apartment-heavy and served by schools inside the district itself. Siblings in different schools frequently return at different times, which is a scheduling problem an online slot solves without a second commute.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

A short hop from Arjan but on a different bus network. Students here often sit the same specifications as Al Barsha South children, which is why past-paper plans move across the two communities unchanged.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer villa stock to the east with its own school provision. Families moving between Dubai Hills and Al Barsha South mid-year are a regular case, and the tutoring plan usually survives the move better than the school place does.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Barsha South

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

The schools closest to Al Barsha South run a mix of British, American and IB continuum provision, which is why two neighbours can sit entirely different qualifications at 16. Students we support in this cluster attend schools including the following; the list is local context, not a claim of any relationship.

  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Safa Community School
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • American School of Dubai
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Barsha

JVC, Arjan, Motor City and Sports City

The second cluster an Al Barsha South bus route reaches. British-curriculum provision dominates here, so Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE entries make up the bulk of the Year 11 cohort and the specification question is the first one to settle.

  • JSS International School
  • Arcadia Global School
  • Sunmarke School
  • GEMS Metropole School Motor City
  • Victory Heights Primary School
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park

Schools are named as local context for families in Al Barsha South; IB Gram is independent and has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school, school group or examination board.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the code, not the symptom

Give us the specification code, the tier and the papers already sat. That one line narrows the tutor pool to people who have taught that exact exam, and it removes the guesswork that otherwise fills the first paid lesson. If you cannot find it, the school's exam officer can tell you in a sentence.

  2. 02

    Free diagnostic lesson

A full one-to-one lesson at no cost, spent working out what is actually wrong. The tutor looks at recent script evidence, tests a sample of specification statements, and distinguishes a knowledge gap from a question-reading gap. You get a written summary whether or not you continue.

  3. 03

Agree the block, not an open-ended arrangement

We set a defined number of lessons against a defined goal, usually six to ten weeks for a timed-paper problem and two terms for a content problem. A stated end point means you get a decision about whether it worked rather than a standing order that nobody reviews.

  4. 04

Work from official papers and schemes

Homework comes from real past papers, marked against the published mark scheme. We cite and link the official Cambridge or Pearson source rather than reproducing or distributing their material, so you are always reading the current version.

  5. 05

Review against the paper, then stop or continue

At the end of the block the measure is a timed paper marked against the scheme, not a feeling about progress. If the gap has closed, we say so and stop. If it has not, we change the tutor or the approach rather than adding hours to the same plan.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on the specification, not the postcode

A tutor is selected because they have taught your child's syllabus code and marked its papers, not because they live near Al Barsha South. The online model is what makes that possible: the pool is every available specialist rather than every available driver.

Mark schemes taught explicitly

Students are taught to read and apply the official mark scheme to their own script. Most have never done it. It is the fastest route from a 5 to a 7 in subjects where the content is already known and the answer shape is wrong.

Figures attributed, never invented

Every AED rate on this page is attributed to the provider or source that published it, with the date. We publish no success statistics, no star ratings and no grade guarantees, because none of them can be evidenced and all of them are used freely by pages ranking above us.

A clear line on coursework

A tutor teaches method, questions a plan and gives feedback on work the student has written. No tutor will produce an investigation, an assignment or any assessed piece on a student's behalf. That line protects the qualification and is a genuine difference in this market.

Availability stated before you pay

If no specialist is free for a narrow specification, we tell you at the enquiry rather than matching you to a generalist and hoping. A short wait for the right 0607 tutor beats an immediate start with the wrong one.

Independent of every school and board

IB Gram holds no accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and no UAE office. Schools are named on this page as context for families in Al Barsha South and nothing more.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Barsha South: your questions answered

How do I find out which IGCSE specification my child in Al Barsha South is sitting?+

Look at the exam entry confirmation the school issues, or the top line of any past paper the department has handed out. You are looking for a four-digit Cambridge number such as 0580 or 0620, or a Pearson code beginning with 4, such as 4MA1. If neither is to hand, the school's exam officer can tell you in one email, and heads of department expect the question. The code also tells you the tier of entry, which is the figure that sets the maximum grade available, so it is worth having in writing before any tutoring conversation starts.

Is a tutor who lives in Al Barsha South better than one teaching from a screen?+

Only if they happen to specialise in the same specification, which is unlikely in a residential district of this size. Al Barsha South has no resident expert in Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 Paper 6 simply by virtue of being a neighbourhood. Choosing by distance selects from whoever is within a twenty-minute drive; choosing by specification selects from everyone qualified. For Al Barsha South, Arjan and Dubai Science Park families, IB Gram delivers lessons online over live video, and the reason is this one: the pool of people who genuinely know your child's papers is much larger than the pool who can reach your door.

Which command terms lose Al Barsha South students the most IGCSE marks?+

A command term is the instruction verb at the start of an exam question, and every mark scheme is written around it. Describe wants observable features. Explain wants a reason linked with a because. Analyse wants a connected chain of consequences. Evaluate wants a judgement with support. A student who writes a good description in answer to an explain question scores nothing for it, however accurate the content. Four command terms learned properly lift marks across every subject at once, which makes this the highest-return hour of teaching available to a Year 10 student.

Can my child move from Core to Extended, and when is it too late?+

Usually yes, and the deadline is set by the exam entry rather than by the teaching. The tier is fixed when the school submits entries, which happens months before the papers. A Core entry caps the grade at C, so a student who improves through Year 11 can be sitting a paper that cannot award what they now deserve. The conversation to have with the head of department is in the autumn term of Year 11. Ask directly when entries close and whether the tier can still be changed; schools answer that question routinely.

Does Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 really have a non-calculator paper now?+

Yes. Under the current syllabus, 0580 Extended candidates sit a non-calculator Paper 2 and a calculator Paper 4, each two hours and 100 marks. Core candidates sit the equivalent pair as Paper 1 and Paper 3. That means roughly half the written marks depend on hand arithmetic, surds, indices and fraction work under time pressure. Dubai cohorts are often weak here because calculators are permitted in school assessments from early secondary. Ten minutes of daily mental arithmetic from Year 9 is worth more than a revision course in April, and it costs nothing.

My child is on Pearson 4MA1 Higher. Is the preparation different from Cambridge?+

Substantially. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A Higher permits a calculator on both papers, so the risk moves away from hand arithmetic and towards over-reliance on the machine: a value typed in wrongly and accepted because no estimate was made first. The grading is 9-1 throughout rather than Cambridge's A*-G in older syllabuses. A tutor who assumes a Cambridge structure will teach non-calculator fluency your child does not need and skip the estimation discipline they do, which is why the specification code belongs in the first message you send.

What is the difference between English First Language and English as a Second Language at IGCSE?+

They are separate qualifications, not difficulty levels. Cambridge runs First Language as 0500, graded A*-G, and 0990, graded 9-1, with a reading response and directed writing at the centre. English as a Second Language runs as 0510, 0511 and 0993, with speaking assessed separately and a reading paper rewarding precise retrieval of detail. Placement is usually decided in Year 9 and rarely revisited, so a child who was new to English at eleven and fluent at fifteen may still be entered for the wrong one. Ask the school which code is on the entry.

How should my child actually use past papers rather than just doing them?+

Do fewer papers, three ways each. First untimed with the syllabus open, to learn the question types. Then timed and closed, to measure honestly. Then as a marking exercise, where the student marks their own script against the official mark scheme while the tutor challenges every decision. That third pass is the one almost nobody does and the one that changes grades, because it shows the student what the examiner is paying for. Five papers worked properly beat twenty-five answered and glanced at.

When do IGCSE exams happen for a candidate sitting them in Dubai?+

Cambridge runs a June series and a November series for UAE centres, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. The February and March series is offered to India only and is not available to a Dubai centre, so ignore any plan built around it. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November; the November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own timetable version, so use the one your child's school publishes.

How quickly do November results arrive if we need a retake decision?+

For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, which is the pattern to plan around rather than a promise about a future series. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026. That January gap matters for a family weighing a retake, because it leaves limited time before the following summer series. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each session, so open the live official timetable PDF rather than relying on a restated date from any page, including this one.

Does IB Gram send an IGCSE tutor to our villa in Al Barsha South?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Lessons for families in Al Barsha South, Arjan, Dubai Science Park and Jumeirah Village Circle are delivered one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. The market for in-home visits is real and priced between roughly AED 180 and 500 an hour by other providers, with travel inside the rate. We quote that honestly rather than matching it, because the money a Dubai family spends on a tutor's commute buys a commute.

What does a genuine specification specialist cost compared with a general tutor?+

Published Dubai rates group into bands. Budget online tuition starts low, with EdFlik listing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Qualified subject tutors online sit around AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table showing 200 to 450 plus. Those are other providers' published figures with their sources, not ours. The step from generalist to specialist is one band; the step to a premium named tutor is several.

Does a private tutor in Dubai need a permit, and can I check it?+

Yes. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the MoHRE private tuition work permit, and it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee and a two-working-day turnaround. Ask any tutor directly whether they hold it. Because the permit costs nothing, there is no honest reason for a working tutor not to have one.

Can a tutor help with my child's IGCSE coursework or science investigation?+

A tutor can teach the method, explain the assessment criteria, question a plan and give feedback on a draft the student has written. No tutor should write, redraft to completion or produce any part of assessed work, and we will not. Schools and awarding bodies treat that as malpractice, and the consequences land on the student rather than on the tutor. If anyone offers to supply a finished investigation or essay, that is the point to stop the conversation. The honest version of coursework support is slower and it is the only version that is safe.

How many IGCSE grades does the Ministry of Education actually count for equivalency?+

The British-track requirement published for secondary certificate equivalency is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five required subjects. One ranking competitor states six subjects, which is wrong. Equivalency is handled by the Ministry rather than by any tutoring provider, so verify the current rule on the official channel before acting on it.

Do Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies still apply if my child sits IGCSE?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements were to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. Those lessons occupy timetable space, which is worth factoring into how much homework capacity a Year 11 student realistically has.

Start with the code, then the lesson

If you take one thing from this page, make it the four-digit number. A parent in Al Barsha South who can say "0580 Extended, Paper 2 is the problem, here is last term's script" will get a better tutor, faster, at a lower cost than a parent describing a general worry, and that holds whoever they buy from. Send the code, the tier and the papers already sat, and the first lesson is free and diagnostic. You will finish it with a written account of which specification statements are insecure and which mark types are being dropped, delivered online over live video, and an honest answer about whether a tutor is the right purchase at all.
