IB Tutor near me in Al Barsha South

A search for an IB tutor near me in Al Barsha South cannot be answered until the subject is named, because the Diploma is not one qualification. It is six subjects at two levels plus a three-part core, each with its own internal assessment, its own command terms and its own paper structure. This page sets out that structure so you can see what to ask for. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Al Barsha South

The Diploma is not a subject, and that is the whole problem

Parents in Al Barsha South searching for IB support usually begin with the programme rather than the subject, which is understandable and is the first thing worth undoing. The Diploma is six subjects chosen across six groups, each taken at Standard or Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and creativity, activity and service. Each of those subjects has its own syllabus, its own paper structure, its own internal assessment and its own published command terms. There is no such thing as an IB tutor in the sense a parent initially means.

The arithmetic of the qualification explains why the subject matters so much. Each of the six subjects is graded from one to seven, giving a maximum of forty-two points. Up to three further points come from the combination of Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay grades, which are awarded from A to E. Forty-five is therefore the maximum, twenty-four is the minimum for the award of the Diploma subject to further conditions, and a failing grade in Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay is itself a condition that can prevent the award. So a student's problem is almost always located in one or two specific places rather than spread across the programme.

That location is what a family should identify before buying anything. A student at twenty-nine points who wants thirty-four is usually losing them in two subjects and one core component, and the work needed in each is different. Higher Level chemistry failing on extended response is a technique problem. Mathematics failing on the exploration is a coursework problem. Theory of Knowledge failing on the essay is an argument-structure problem. One weekly session labelled IB tutoring addresses none of them precisely.

There is a second thing almost no student has had explained to them, and it runs across every subject in the programme. The IB publishes command terms, and they are examinable. State, define and list ask for recall. Describe, outline and summarise ask for an account. Explain, analyse, evaluate, discuss, compare and contrast and justify ask for reasoning, and each one specifies a different kind of reasoning. A student who answers an evaluate question with a description has written something accurate that cannot reach the upper markbands, and that happens across history, biology, economics and English simultaneously.

IB Gram delivers tuition for UAE families as one-to-one online tuition over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service offered only in India. For a subject-led page the relevance is direct: matching a student to somebody who has taught Higher Level economics, or supervised a historical investigation, or marked a Theory of Knowledge essay, is a search across the whole market rather than across the few square kilometres a car can cover in Al Barsha South at half past six.

At a glance

  • Six subjects at 1-7 gives 42 points; the core adds up to 3, for a maximum of 45
  • Twenty-four points is the Diploma minimum, subject to further conditions
  • Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are graded A to E, and an E is a condition
  • Every subject has its own internal assessment, papers and command terms
  • Command terms are published and examinable, and specify the kind of reasoning wanted
  • Matching by subject and level is a market-wide search, not a local one
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The three bands below are what an Al Barsha South family is actually choosing between or moving through, described by what each assesses rather than by how hard it is.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, normally three at Higher Level and three at Standard, with Higher Level carrying 240 guided teaching hours and Standard Level 150. Each subject is graded one to seven and carries an internal assessment component completed during the course. Alongside sit Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and creativity, activity and service, the first two of which together contribute up to three points.

Al Barsha South Diploma sets are small, which affects which subjects and levels actually run in a given year. A school may offer a subject on paper and not run it if the cohort is too small, and a Higher Level option may be delivered partly outside the main timetable. Both are questions for the Diploma coordinator rather than inferences from a prospectus.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The Career-related Programme

An alternative IB route combining Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills component. It is a different qualification with a different structure, and support for a student on it is not the same purchase as support for a Diploma candidate, even where the subject courses overlap.

Some Dubai schools offer this alongside the Diploma. If your child is on it, saying so at the outset prevents a tutor planning against Diploma requirements that do not apply, particularly around the reflective project, which replaces the Extended Essay rather than sitting beside it.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme into the Diploma

The IB's preceding programme, assessed against four criteria per subject group rather than by papers. Students arriving at the Diploma from MYP generally bring investigation and reflection skills from the criteria and less procedural drilling than classmates arriving from IGCSE, which makes their first-term gaps almost the mirror image.

Al Barsha South contains an IB continuum school in Dwight School Dubai, so the MYP-to-Diploma route is a genuine local pathway here rather than a theoretical one. A tutor supporting a Year 12 student in this district should establish which feeder route they came through before planning the first term.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE into the Diploma

The commonest entry route in Dubai, where the UK curriculum accounts for 37 per cent of private enrolment against 7 per cent for the International Baccalaureate. IGCSE builds procedural fluency and single-step recall; the Diploma asks for extended independent work, command-term precision and multi-step reasoning. The gap shows in the first term and in the first internal assessment.

British-pathway schools in Al Barsha and Al Sufouh supply a steady flow of IGCSE students into Diploma sets in this part of Dubai. Four or five bridging sessions in the summer before Year 12, aimed at command terms and extended writing, removes most of the first-term difficulty and almost nobody buys them.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the six groups with the subjects most requested by Al Barsha South families, and what each actually assesses. The internal assessment form is named in each case, because that is the component families most often need help with.

Group 1: Language A, Language and Literature

HL and SL

Assessed by written papers plus an individual oral, with an additional essay at Higher Level. Marks are lost in the oral when a student describes a text rather than analysing how it constructs meaning through a global issue, and in the papers when a comparative question receives two separate accounts instead of a comparison.

Group 2: Language B and ab initio

HL and SL

Reading, writing and listening papers plus an individual oral. Students are placed by prior experience rather than by year, and the oral is the component least rehearsed because it cannot easily be practised alone. Text-type conventions carry marks that are straightforward to secure and routinely ignored.

Group 3: History

HL and SL

Source-based and essay papers, with a historical investigation as the internal assessment. The essay command terms do the damage: discuss, evaluate and to what extent each demand a judgement, and a chronological narrative cannot reach the upper markbands however accurate it is. Source reliability work is a trainable, repeatable skill.

Group 3: Economics

HL and SL

Papers combining explanation, diagrams and, at Higher Level, quantitative work, with a portfolio of commentaries as the internal assessment. Diagram accuracy with correctly labelled axes is reliable marks. Evaluation is where strong students cap out, because a judgement is required rather than a list of consequences.

Group 3: Business Management and Psychology

HL and SL

Both carry substantial internal assessment and both reward structured evaluation over recall. Psychology marks go to studies described without their relevance to the argument; business management marks go to tools applied without a conclusion. Each has its own command-term set and its own assessment criteria.

Group 4: Biology, Chemistry and Physics

HL and SL

Papers with multiple-choice, data-analysis and extended-response sections, plus a scientific investigation worth twenty per cent assessed on four criteria of research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each worth six marks. The data-analysis section is the most neglected and the most trainable part of all three subjects.

Group 5: Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Two papers at Standard Level and three at Higher, plus an exploration worth twenty per cent assessed on five criteria for twenty marks in total. Standard Level Paper 1 is sat without technology, which exposes students who learned every method on a screen. Higher Level Paper 3 carries twenty per cent and fails students structurally rather than mathematically.

Group 5: Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The modelling and statistics route with technology assumed throughout, reaching graph theory and voronoi diagrams at Higher Level, and the same twenty per cent exploration. Marks go to calculator output presented without interpretation, and to results stated without saying what they mean in the question's context.

Group 6: Visual Arts, Theatre and Music

HL and SL

Heavily coursework-weighted, with process documentation assessed alongside the work itself. Students who produce strong outcomes and thin process evidence lose marks they have already earned in practice. Deadlines here are school-managed and tend to collide with science and mathematics internal assessments.

The core: Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, service

Required of every candidate

Theory of Knowledge is assessed by an essay on a prescribed title and an exhibition; the Extended Essay is an independent research piece with a school-appointed supervisor. Both are graded A to E and together contribute up to three points. Creativity, activity and service carries no points and is a completion requirement.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, chosen by which part of the Diploma structure is failing. All three run online over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and the right one follows from the diagnosis rather than from a budget.

Single-subject weekly session

One subject, one group, one level, with a tutor who has taught that combination. This is the default and it is the right default, because a student at twenty-nine points who wants thirty-four is usually losing them in one or two specific subjects rather than across the programme. The subject, group and level are confirmed before booking.

  • Matched by subject group and level, not by programme
  • That subject's command terms taught explicitly
  • Papers marked against published expectations
  • The internal assessment placed against the school's deadline

Internal assessment supervision block

A short run of sessions on one internal assessment, working to its own criteria: the four criteria of a scientific investigation, the five of a mathematics exploration, the criteria of a historical investigation. The tutor questions, interrogates and gives feedback on the student's own work, and writes no part of it.

  • Planned backwards from the school's internal deadline
  • Scope or research question tested before work begins
  • Feedback referenced to the criteria by name
  • The boundary on what a tutor will not do stated at the first session

Command-term and paper-technique block

Sessions that cut across subjects, aimed at the behaviour rather than the content: answering an evaluate question with a judgement, a compare and contrast question with a comparison, an explain question with a mechanism. Unusually efficient because the same habit is costing marks in several subjects at once.

  • Published command terms taught by what each one demands
  • The student's own written answers read against the markbands
  • An error log kept by behaviour rather than by topic
  • Transferable across every subject the student takes

01

How 45 points is actually built

Before any subject is discussed, the structure of the score is worth laying out, because it tells a family where their child's missing points are. Six subjects each graded one to seven gives a maximum of forty-two. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are each graded A to E, and their combination contributes up to three further points, which is where forty-five comes from. Twenty-four points is the minimum for the award of the Diploma, subject to further conditions, and a failing grade in Theory of Knowledge or in the Extended Essay is itself one of those conditions.

The practical consequence is that points are lumpy rather than smooth. Moving from a five to a six in one subject is one point. Moving the core combination from one point to three is two points, and it comes from two pieces of written work rather than from a two-year course. For a student close to a threshold, those two pieces of writing are frequently the cheapest points available in the whole programme, and they are also the ones most often left to the school alone.

Inside each subject, the points are built from a paper structure plus an internal assessment. The internal assessment is completed during the course, marked by the school and moderated by the IB, and in the sciences and mathematics it carries twenty per cent of the subject grade. That means a fifth of each of those subject grades is decided before any examination is sat, on work that has a school deadline rather than an examination date.

The table below sets out where the points sit. The reason to read it before choosing a tutor is that it turns a vague ambition into a short list. A student who wants three more points has to name where they are coming from, and in almost every case the answer is one subject's extended response, one internal assessment, and the core. Those are three different purchases.

Command terms, which are published and examinable

This is the single highest-leverage piece of teaching available across the Diploma, and most students reach Year 13 without having received it. The IB publishes command terms for each subject, grouped by the kind of thinking they demand, and examiners apply them literally. A question is not asking the student to write about a topic; it is asking for a specific operation on it.

The lowest tier asks for recall: state, define, list, identify, label. These want a short, exact answer, and students lose time writing paragraphs where a line was wanted. The middle tier asks for an account: describe, outline, summarise, annotate. These want content organised but not argued. The upper tier asks for reasoning: explain, analyse, evaluate, discuss, compare and contrast, justify, examine, to what extent. These want a mechanism, a breakdown, a judgement or a comparison, and each is a different operation.

The failure is consistent and it is not a knowledge failure. A student asked to evaluate who describes has written something true that cannot reach the upper markbands. A student asked to compare and contrast who writes two separate accounts has supplied the material for a comparison and not made one. A student asked to explain who states a relationship without giving the mechanism has stopped one step short. In each case the content is correct and the marks are not available.

Because command terms run across every subject, fixing the habit pays several times. A student taking history, biology and economics who learns to recognise what evaluate demands improves in three subjects from the same work. That makes a command-term block one of the few genuinely cross-subject purchases in Diploma tutoring, and at a mid-market rate of AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, three or four sessions is AED 450 to AED 1,200 for an effect that is not confined to one subject.

Internal assessment, subject by subject

Every Diploma subject carries internal assessment completed during the course, marked by the school and moderated by the IB, and its deadline is set by the school rather than published anywhere a parent can search. Because the forms differ so much between subjects, a family needs to know what their child's actually is before asking anyone for help with it.

In the sciences it is a scientific investigation worth twenty per cent of the subject grade, assessed on four criteria of research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each worth six marks for twenty-four in total. In mathematics it is an exploration, also worth twenty per cent, assessed on five criteria for twenty marks, with criterion E on use of mathematics carrying six of them. In history it is a historical investigation. In economics it is a portfolio of commentaries. In Language A there is an individual oral, with a further essay at Higher Level. In the arts the coursework weighting is heavier still.

Two patterns run across all of them and both are worth knowing. The first is that the criterion asking the student to judge their own work, under whatever name, is where marks are most consistently left behind. Evaluation in the sciences, reflection in the mathematics exploration, the evaluative strand in a historical investigation: students write them as apology or as summary rather than as analysis, and the shift is a change of approach rather than new knowledge. The second is that scope decides the ceiling before any work is done, which is why the earliest session on any internal assessment is the most valuable one.

The boundary is identical across every subject and should be stated to the student before work begins. A tutor may discuss candidate topics and say which will not work, question whether a method or an argument holds, ask what the evidence actually supports, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not write, draft, complete or produce any assessed work, and should not edit it until the voice is no longer the student's. Where a school requires an authenticity declaration, the candidate signs it. One operator in this market advertises completed Internal Assessments at a fixed price; buying that places a malpractice exposure on the student rather than on the seller.

Higher Level against Standard Level: what the extra hours buy

A Diploma candidate normally takes three subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard, and the difference is substantial rather than cosmetic. Higher Level carries 240 guided teaching hours against 150 at Standard Level, which is roughly sixty per cent more contact time, and that time goes into additional content, deeper treatment and in some subjects an additional assessment component.

The additional components matter for tutoring because they are where generalist help runs out. Mathematics at Higher Level adds Paper 3, one hour and twenty per cent of the grade, built from two extended problem-solving questions that develop an unfamiliar idea in stages. Language A at Higher Level adds an essay. The sciences extend several themes or units rather than adding separate options. History extends with additional in-depth study. Each of those is a specific piece of teaching, and a tutor comfortable with the shared core may not have taught any of them.

This is also where a level mismatch becomes expensive. A student struggling at Higher Level may have a content problem, a technique problem, or a level problem, and the three have different answers. Where a level change is still possible, which is usually early in Year 12, the honest intervention is a diagnostic session rather than a term of support, because a student coping comfortably at Standard Level is in a better position than one drowning at Higher. Where the level is fixed, the plan has to work within it.

The table below compares the two on the dimensions that change what a family should buy. The practical instruction it leads to is simple: when asking for help, say the level as well as the subject, and ask whether the tutor has taught the Higher Level additional components specifically. Those two sentences remove most of the mismatch risk in Diploma tutoring.

The core, and the points most families ignore

  • Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay contribute up to three points combined
  • Both are graded A to E, and a failing grade is a condition on the award
  • Scope decides the ceiling in both; the first conversation is the valuable one
  • A tutor works alongside the Extended Essay supervisor, never in place of them

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are graded A to E and together contribute up to three points, which is the difference between thirty-one and thirty-four. For a student near a university threshold that is often the cheapest movement available in the whole Diploma, because it comes from two pieces of writing rather than from two years of a subject. Despite that, the core is the part of the programme families most reliably leave entirely to the school.

Theory of Knowledge is assessed by an essay on a prescribed title and by an exhibition. The essay rewards a sustained argument about knowledge questions with developed counter-positions, and the characteristic failure is a tour of opinions that never commits. Students who are strong essay writers in other subjects often struggle here because the subject matter is unfamiliar and because the essay must be about knowledge rather than about the examples it uses.

The Extended Essay is independent research with a school-appointed supervisor, its own criteria and a word limit. The characteristic failures are a research question too broad to answer within the limit, and a reflective element treated as an afterthought. Scope again decides the ceiling, which is why a conversation before the research begins is worth more than weeks of help afterwards. A student writing an Extended Essay in a subject they also take at Higher Level is carrying two independent pieces of work in that subject at once.

The boundary applies with particular force here, because both pieces are extended writing and the temptation is greatest. A tutor may discuss a prescribed title, interrogate an argument's structure, ask whether a counter-position has been fairly represented, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not write, draft or complete a Theory of Knowledge essay, an exhibition commentary or an Extended Essay, and must not replace the school-appointed supervisor. The candidate signs the authenticity declaration.

06

Past-paper work in the Diploma, which is not IGCSE past-paper work

  • Fewer papers marked properly beats more papers self-marked in the Diploma
  • Categorise losses by behaviour: described instead of evaluated, mechanism missing
  • Re-sit an early paper weeks later to test whether the fix actually held
  • Internal assessment work needs its own sessions and its own deadline

Families arriving from an IGCSE route apply IGCSE habits to Diploma revision and get less from them than they expect. The two qualifications reward different practice, and the difference is worth stating because it changes how a tutoring hour should be spent.

IGCSE past-paper work is largely about coverage and recall under time pressure: a candidate meets many short items, and fluency plus accuracy carries most of the marks. Diploma papers contain extended-response work where the same content can score well or badly depending on how it is argued, and where command terms determine what counts as an answer. Doing more papers therefore helps less than doing fewer papers properly, with somebody reading what the student actually wrote.

The useful regime has three parts. First, whole papers under timed conditions once content coverage is reasonable, because the timing problem in Diploma papers is usually caused by over-writing early extended responses. Second, marking by somebody other than the student, against the published expectations, with the losses categorised by behaviour rather than by topic: described instead of evaluated, mechanism missing, comparison not made, judgement absent, units dropped. Third, a return to an early paper some weeks later to test whether the fix held, which is the only honest evidence available.

Two further points specific to this programme. Internal assessment work is not past-paper work and should not be squeezed into the same sessions; it has its own criteria and its own school deadline, and mixing them means neither gets done. And no past paper, mark scheme, subject guide or grade-boundary table should be supplied to you as a download by a tutoring provider: those belong to the IB, and should be referenced and linked at source. If a provider offers a bundle as a selling point, the right question is where it came from.

07

What runs locally, and what to verify before paying

  • Ask which subjects and levels are confirmed as running for the cohort
  • Ask how Higher Level additional content is delivered in a small set
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • No IB date is published here that has not been verified at source

Al Barsha South has genuine IB provision, including an IB continuum school in Dwight School Dubai, with further Diploma provision in the Al Barsha and Al Sufouh clusters and inland at Emirates Hills. What a family cannot assume is which subjects and levels actually run in a given year, because Diploma sets in this part of Dubai are small. Dubai's private sector served 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25 with the International Baccalaureate at 7 per cent of enrolment, against 37 per cent for the UK curriculum, so a Diploma set is smaller than a British-curriculum set almost everywhere.

Three questions to the Diploma coordinator settle most of it. Which subjects and levels are confirmed as running for your child's cohort. How any Higher Level additional content is delivered, since in small sets it is often taught outside the main timetable and a tutoring slot must sit outside that rather than compete with it. And when the internal assessment deadlines fall for each subject, since those are school-set and published nowhere a parent can search. All three are free.

Then the standard verification, which applies to any provider. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. MoHRE's own service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, listing no fees and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Individuals tutoring without a permit face fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

And the claims. IB Gram holds no accreditation from the IB, from Cambridge, from Pearson, from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or MoHRE, and claims none; regulators are named on these pages to explain what they govern. A tutoring business with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry, and that is a numbered document. Nobody should be described as an IB examiner unless current examiner status can be evidenced, and examiner status should never be presented as access to marking or boundaries. No IB examination or results date appears on this page, because none has been verified from the IB's own published source; confirm every date with your coordinator.

08

Why a subject-led search is not a local search

  • Once the subject and level are named, proximity is the wrong filter
  • A geographic search samples specialists by location rather than by competence
  • An evening slot in Gulf Standard Time does not depend on anybody's drive
  • A shared screen holds the question, the answer and the criteria together

Everything above leads to one practical conclusion about the phrase this page is written for. A search for an IB tutor near me in Al Barsha South is a search for proximity, and proximity is the wrong filter once the question has been narrowed to a subject and a level. The right filter is whether this person has taught Higher Level economics, or supervised a historical investigation, or marked a Theory of Knowledge essay against the published descriptors.

The scarcity is structural rather than accidental. The Diploma is a small programme in this emirate, and inside it each subject at each level is a smaller population again. The number of people within a twenty-minute drive of Al Barsha South at half past six who have taught Higher Level Language A and marked the additional essay is not a number worth relying on. Restricting the search geographically does not sample the specialist population evenly; it samples whoever among them happens to live nearby and happens to be free.

IB Gram's delivery position is therefore not a workaround. Tuition for UAE families is one-to-one online tuition over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, and IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service offered only in India. What that buys an Al Barsha South family is a match on the subject and the level, an evening slot that does not depend on anybody's drive, and a session that survives the twenty to forty minute peak journeys this district generates.

It also suits the work. Reading a student's extended response against the published markbands needs both documents visible at once, annotation that can be undone, and a record afterwards. A shared screen holds the question, the student's own answer and the criteria together, and the session can be recorded so an argument structure is available again in revision week. For an internal assessment draft or a Theory of Knowledge essay, that is a better working surface than a kitchen table, and for a two-year programme it is the format that holds.

Dense apartment communities immediately south with Arcadia School nearby. Diploma students commuting out to schools in the Al Barsha cluster lose twenty to thirty minutes each way at the peak, which puts a realistic session start at half past six rather than five.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Villas and townhouses adjacent to the Circle, with Sunmarke School and Arcadia Preparatory School nearby. Quiet internally, slow to leave at the peak, and a district where a fixed online slot survives a two-year course better than a variable one.

Dubai Science Park and Arjan

Apartment districts north-east with a largely working population. Diploma students here often return later than the school's finish time suggests and need an evening slot that stays fixed across the term rather than moving week to week.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

Mid-rise communities further inland with schools including GEMS Metropole nearby. Crossings into the Al Barsha clusters use Umm Suqeim Road and Sheikh Zayed Road, both slow between five and seven, with the return leg the slower direction.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer villa communities east of Al Barsha South with a growing school supply and a mobile population. Mid-course arrivals into Diploma sets are frequent here, and a student arriving in Year 13 has the hardest subject-matching problem in this catchment.

Al Barsha 2 and Al Barsha 3

Older residential streets immediately north, with Al Mawakeb School Al Barsha and Dubai National School Al Barsha nearby. The district Al Barsha South families most often share school buses with, and where journeys are shorter in both directions.

Al Sufouh and Al Barsha 1

The older clusters to the north and west, holding Dubai College, GEMS Wellington International School, the American School of Dubai and Kings' School Al Barsha. Several run Diploma programmes, so Al Barsha South students sometimes commute into them.

School ecosystem

Al Barsha South and the Jumeirah Village edge

The schools inside or bordering the district. Dwight School Dubai runs the IB continuum, so the full MYP-to-Diploma pathway exists locally. Which subjects and levels actually run in a given year depends on the cohort and should be confirmed with the Diploma coordinator.

  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Safa Community School
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Arcadia School
  • Sunmarke School

Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

The older, denser clusters north and west, with long-established British, American and IB provision. Diploma sets in these schools are small enough that subject availability varies year to year, and some Al Barsha South students commute into them.

  • American School of Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Dubai College

Emirates Hills and the inland communities

Further inland, with Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills among the longest-established Diploma schools in the emirate. Students transferring between these schools and Al Barsha South mid-course arrive with a different subject combination and sometimes a different level.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • GEMS Metropole School
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park

Schools are named to describe the Al Barsha South education ecosystem families here already navigate. No affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any named school or group is implied, and none exists. Subjects and levels offered vary by year and should be confirmed with the school.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject, the group and the level

There is no IB tutor in the sense the search implies. Say Higher Level economics, or Standard Level Language B, or the mathematics exploration, and the match becomes possible. Those three words remove most of the mismatch risk in Diploma tutoring and cost nothing to supply.

  2. 02

Say where the points are missing

A student at twenty-nine points who wants thirty-four is losing them somewhere specific: one subject's extended response, one internal assessment, and the core. Naming the places turns an ambition into a short list of purchases, each of which is a different piece of work with a different tutor requirement.

  3. 03

Send one written answer, not a grade

An extended response or an internal assessment draft as the student produced it says whether the problem is content, command-term recognition, structure or timing. A grade only says how much was lost. The first session can then categorise the losses by behaviour rather than counting them.

  4. 04

Get the internal assessment deadlines from the coordinator

Every subject has one, each is set by the school, and none is published anywhere a parent can search. In the sciences and mathematics the internal assessment carries twenty per cent of the subject grade. Collecting all six dates in one email reshapes the whole support calendar.

  5. 05

Take the free trial on the hardest component

One lesson, one subject, before any payment is taken. Spend it on the extended response or the internal assessment criterion that is actually failing rather than on comfortable content, and ask the tutor to reference the published descriptors. That tests whether they work the way the subject is marked.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by subject group and level

The Diploma is six subjects at two levels plus a three-part core, each with its own papers, internal assessment and command terms. Matching on the subject and the level rather than on the programme is the step that decides whether the right thing gets taught at all.

Command terms taught as examinable content

State, explain, analyse, compare and contrast, evaluate and to what extent each demand a different operation, and examiners apply them literally. A student who learns to recognise them improves in several subjects from the same work, which makes this one of the few cross-subject purchases available.

Internal assessment worked to its own criteria

Four criteria in a scientific investigation, five in a mathematics exploration, different ones again in a historical investigation. Feedback references them by name, scope is tested before work begins, and the boundary on what a tutor will not do is stated to the student at the first session.

The core treated as points, not as an afterthought

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay contribute up to three points from two pieces of writing, which near a threshold is often the cheapest movement in the Diploma. Both are supported as argument work, alongside the school-appointed supervisor rather than in place of them.

Papers marked, not counted

Diploma extended responses can carry correct content and score badly, so fewer papers marked against the published expectations beats more papers self-marked. Losses are categorised by behaviour, and an early paper is re-sat weeks later to test whether the fix actually held.

No unverified date and no claimed accreditation

No IB examination or results date appears on this page, because none has been confirmed from the IB's own published source. IB Gram holds no accreditation from the IB or from any UAE regulator and claims none, and lessons for UAE families are online only, with home visiting offered in India.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Barsha South: your questions answered

What should I ask for instead of an IB tutor near me in Al Barsha South?+

Name the subject, the group and the level. The Diploma is six subjects across six groups at Standard or Higher Level plus a three-part core, and each has its own syllabus, papers, internal assessment and command terms. Higher Level economics and Standard Level Language B are different teaching jobs with little overlap. Supplying those three words costs nothing and removes most of the mismatch risk, because it lets a match be made on competence rather than on who happens to be free nearby.

How is the 45-point Diploma score actually made up?+

Six subjects each graded one to seven gives a maximum of forty-two points. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are each graded A to E, and their combination contributes up to three further points, which produces forty-five. Twenty-four points is the minimum for the award of the Diploma subject to further conditions, and a failing grade in Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay is one of those conditions. Confirm the current award requirements with your school's Diploma coordinator.

Where are three extra Diploma points most cheaply found?+

Often in the core. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together contribute up to three points and they come from two pieces of written work rather than from two years of a subject, so for a student near a threshold they are frequently the cheapest movement available. Moving a subject grade from five to six is one point and requires a year of work. Despite that, the core is the part of the programme families most reliably leave entirely to the school.

What are IB command terms and why do they cost marks?+

They are published instructions that examiners apply literally, and they specify the operation a question wants. State, define and list ask for a short exact answer. Describe and outline ask for an organised account. Explain wants a mechanism, analyse wants a breakdown, compare and contrast wants one integrated comparison, and evaluate, discuss and to what extent want a supported judgement. A student who describes where evaluation was asked for has written something true that cannot reach the upper markbands.

Which internal assessment does my child's subject have?+

It depends on the subject. The sciences have a scientific investigation worth twenty per cent of the grade, assessed on four criteria of six marks each. Mathematics has an exploration, also twenty per cent, assessed on five criteria for twenty marks. History has a historical investigation, economics a portfolio of commentaries, Language A an individual oral plus an additional essay at Higher Level, and the arts heavier coursework again. Every deadline is set by the school rather than published anywhere a parent can search.

Why do internal assessment evaluation marks go missing so consistently?+

Because students write the judging criterion as apology or as summary rather than as analysis. In a scientific investigation the evaluation criterion lists what went wrong with human error at the top, when it asks which weaknesses materially affected the result and what a better design would do. In a mathematics exploration the reflection becomes a conclusion. In both cases the shift is a change of approach rather than new knowledge, and it responds to two or three sessions before submission.

What does Higher Level add over Standard Level?+

Roughly sixty per cent more contact time, 240 guided teaching hours against 150, spent on additional content, deeper treatment and in some subjects an extra assessment component. Mathematics at Higher Level adds Paper 3, one hour and twenty per cent of the grade. Language A adds an essay. The sciences extend several units rather than adding separate options. Those additional components are where generalist help runs out, so ask whether a tutor has taught them specifically.

My child is struggling at Higher Level. Is it a level problem?+

It may be, and the three possibilities need separating: a content problem, a technique problem, or a level problem. Where a level change is still possible, which is usually early in Year 12, the honest intervention is one diagnostic session rather than a term of support, because a student coping comfortably at Standard Level is in a better position than one drowning at Higher. Where the level is fixed, the plan works within it and says so rather than implying otherwise.

How should Diploma past-paper work differ from IGCSE revision?+

Fewer papers, marked properly. IGCSE past-paper work rewards coverage and recall under time pressure across many short items. Diploma papers contain extended responses where identical content scores well or badly depending on how it is argued and on whether the command term was honoured. So the value is in somebody reading what the student actually wrote, categorising the losses by behaviour rather than by topic, and then re-sitting an early paper weeks later to test whether the fix held.

Can a tutor help with the Theory of Knowledge essay?+

Within a firm boundary. A tutor can discuss a prescribed title, interrogate the structure of an argument, ask whether a counter-position has been represented fairly, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor cannot write, draft or complete the essay or the exhibition commentary, and the candidate signs any authenticity declaration the school requires. The characteristic failure is a tour of opinions that never commits, and the essay has to be about knowledge rather than about its examples.

Which IB subjects and levels actually run at schools near Al Barsha South?+

It varies by year and by cohort, so ask the Diploma coordinator rather than reading a prospectus. Diploma sets in this part of Dubai are small: the International Baccalaureate accounted for 7 per cent of Dubai private enrolment in 2024-25, against 37 per cent for the UK curriculum, across 227 private schools serving 387,441 students. A school may list a subject and not run it if the cohort is too small, and a Higher Level option may be taught partly outside the main timetable.

My child joined a Diploma set mid-course. What is the first thing to do?+

Establish which units or topics the previous school had covered in each subject, because schools sequence a two-year course differently and previous grades describe a different subset of it. Mid-course arrivals are frequent in Al Barsha South and Dubai Hills. The same session should confirm which internal assessment deadlines now apply, since those move with the school, and produce a written gap list per subject with a week count attached.

Can one tutor support two Diploma subjects at once?+

Sometimes, and the test is whether the failure is shared. A student who describes where evaluation was wanted is making the same error in history, biology and economics, and a command-term block fixes it in all three from one set of sessions. Where the problem is subject-specific content at Higher Level, two specialists beat one generalist. The honest question to ask is whether the person has taught both at the level required, and the answer should be specific.

Does an IB tutor in Dubai need a MoHRE permit?+

Yes, and it is free. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. MoHRE lists the service as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with no fees and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through its smart app, website and e-services system. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

Should a tutor supply past papers and mark schemes for us?+

No. Past papers, mark schemes, subject guides and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, and reproducing them as downloads is copyright infringement; supplying unreleased material is also a malpractice exposure. A legitimate tutor references them, cites the official source and links out, and works from material the school already holds. If a provider offers a bundle as a selling point, the right question is where it came from and who authorised its distribution.

Why does this page not give any IB exam or results dates?+

Because none has been verified from the IB's own published source. The IB's site returns an error to automated retrieval, so every date available to us would be secondhand, and a date a family plans around should not be secondhand. A comparable error has already been made in this market with Cambridge's February and March series, which is offered to India only and whose dates have been quoted to UAE parents elsewhere. Confirm every IB date with your school's Diploma coordinator or the IB directly.
