Evening IB Tutor in Dubai

An evening IB tutor in Dubai is working inside a hard constraint: sixty minutes, after a full school day, with homework for six subjects still waiting. That hour can do exactly one thing well, so the whole question is which thing and which hour. This page sets out what fits a 17:00 slot against a 20:00 slot, how Gulf Standard Time decides which tutors are even awake, and what a single evening session can realistically fix in each Diploma subject. Lessons run online over live video.

  • One named objective per session, agreed before the hour starts
  • Slots from 16:30 to 21:00 Gulf Standard Time, Sunday to Thursday
  • Tutor pool spans several time zones, so late Dubai slots are covered
  • Online one-to-one over live video; written note after every session

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The evening hour is the scarcest thing you will buy, so spend it on one thing

Look at a Dubai Diploma student's Tuesday. The bus drops them somewhere between 15:15 and 16:30 depending on the community. There is homework in six subjects, an internal assessment with a deadline, football or music on two or three evenings, a family that eats together, and a body that has been awake since six. Into that a parent adds a tutoring session, usually between 18:00 and 20:00 because that is when everyone is home. The hour exists. The question is what it is capable of.

It is capable of exactly one thing. A single topic taught properly. A single question type drilled until the pattern changes. One section of an internal assessment draft read against its criteria and discussed. A set of six past-paper questions marked and understood. What it cannot do is cover a term's backlog, prepare three subjects, or sit a full two-hour paper, and sessions that try end up as thirty minutes of chat and thirty minutes of skimming.

That constraint is not a weakness. A weekly hour with one clear objective, repeated for twelve weeks, is twelve things fixed, and twelve things is usually more than a Diploma student needs to move a grade band where the losses are habits. The failure mode of evening tutoring is not the length of the session; it is the absence of an objective. A tutor who arrives and asks what shall we do today has already spent fifteen minutes of a paid hour deciding.

The second thing this page is about is the hour itself. A 17:00 session and a 20:30 session are different products bought with the same money. At 17:00 a student is tired but still capable of new material; by 20:30 the only reliable work is consolidation, practice on something already known, or a conversation about a draft. A parent who books the convenient slot rather than the correct one is often paying full price for the weakest version of the session.

Gulf Standard Time is the third variable, and the one nobody mentions. Dubai sits four hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time, which means that a 19:00 Dubai slot is mid-afternoon in London, late evening in South Asia and the middle of the night in East Asia and Australia. That arithmetic decides which specialists can take your slot at all. It is also the honest reason a late Dubai evening can be covered by a strong subject specialist rather than whoever happens to be free locally.

Below: the evening hour by hour, the time-zone map, what one hour fixes per subject, why a 21:00 session is usually a poor purchase, how evening tutoring sits against the drive to a tuition centre, and what evening rates look like in AED at published 2026 market levels.

At a glance

  • One objective per hour, named before the session starts
  • 17:00 for new material; 20:00 and later for consolidation and practice
  • Gulf Standard Time is four hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time
  • A written note after each session, naming what to do before the next one
  • Lessons are online one-to-one; IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai
  • The 18:00 to 20:00 window books out first, so fix the slot early in the term
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An evening hour is used differently at each stage of the IB continuum, and the realistic objective for one session changes with the programme. These are the stages Dubai families book evening slots for.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. In an evening hour the realistic objectives are one topic, one question type or one section of a draft. Full timed papers belong to a longer weekend block, because a two-hour paper plus marking does not fit a school night.

Dubai Diploma students typically carry homework across six subjects every night, and school deadlines for internal assessments are set locally rather than by the IB, so two students in the same emirate can be eight weeks apart on the same component. The evening objective should be set against the next dated thing in your own school's calendar.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups with four lettered criteria each, reported 1-8 per criterion. An evening hour here is well spent on criterion literacy: taking one task the school has marked and working out what separates the band awarded from the band above. That is a one-hour job with a visible outcome.

Younger students in Dubai are often fresher at 16:30 than Diploma students are, because the homework load is lighter, so early evening slots are genuinely productive for Years 7 to 9. Year 10 and 11 students sit closer to the Diploma pattern, with activities and coursework competing for the same hours.

DP coreAges 16-19 · Across both Diploma years

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

The exhibition with its three objects and commentary, the prescribed-title essay, and the 4,000-word Extended Essay with a school-appointed supervisor. These suit evening hours better than most people expect, because one hour is enough to interrogate a research question or test whether a section answers what it claims to.

The Extended Essay supervisor is appointed by the Dubai school and signs the reflection sessions; a tutor works beside that and never in place of it. An evening hour spent asking whether the question can be answered in 4,000 words, two months before the first draft is due, saves considerably more time than it costs.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary inquiry with no external examinations, ending in the Year 6 exhibition. Evening sessions for primary students should be short, 30 or 45 minutes, early rather than late, and focused on one skill: reading fluency, number facts or sentence structure. An hour after 19:00 is rarely productive at this age.

Dubai primary families often ask for a 17:00 slot and then find homework and dinner collide with it. The 16:30 start, straight off the bus with a snack, works better in practice. Arabic is mandatory in Dubai private schools from the early years, so a non-Arab child may be carrying a second script alongside English literacy.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma subjects most often booked into evening slots, with the realistic objective for a single hour in each. The test of a good evening tutor is whether they can name that objective before the session rather than during it.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

An hour fits one technique to the point of fluency: integration by substitution, binomial expansion, one proof method. It does not fit a mixed paper. The most valuable evening objective is often method presentation, because unshown working costs marks that the student has already earned mathematically.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Questions are long and contextual, so an hour is best spent on two or three full questions read carefully rather than ten short ones. Statistics work suits the evening well; the modelling questions need more time than a school night allows and belong in a longer block.

Chemistry

HL and SL

One hour is right for a single mechanism, one calculation type, or the evaluation section of an internal assessment draft. Energetics and equilibrium both reward short repeated practice. Significant figures and state symbols are a fifteen-minute fix that students keep failing to make, which makes them an ideal evening objective.

Physics

HL and SL

Extended-response explanation can be taught in an hour if the objective is the structure of the answer rather than the topic: claim, mechanism, consequence, with the physics named at each step. Uncertainty work for the internal assessment needs a longer sitting, because it cannot be rushed without being redone.

Biology

HL and SL

An hour suits a set of unseen data-analysis questions, marked and discussed, which is the part of the paper students practise least. Terminology precision is another good single objective: a list of the near-synonyms the markscheme rejects, drilled once, changes answers permanently.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy is the best possible evening objective, because it is finite and visibly improvable: axes, labels, shift direction, new equilibrium marked. One commentary section can also be discussed in an hour. Writing a whole 800-word commentary cannot, and should not be attempted inside a session.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

One unseen extract analysed properly fills an hour. So does rehearsing one segment of the individual oral. What does not fit is a full Paper 1 under timed conditions, which needs a longer block, so the evening job is technique on a short text rather than exam simulation.

History

HL and SL

Source work suits the evening precisely: two sources, provenance analysed, cross-referenced, marked. The HL regional option benefits from a weekly hour spent building a bank of dated specifics, ten at a time, which is dull and is exactly the kind of task a fixed weekly slot makes happen.

Business Management

HL and SL

One tool applied to one piece of stimulus, done properly, is an hour well spent. The Higher Level pre-released case study rewards exactly this kind of incremental weekly work across months, which is the one place where an evening hour beats an occasional long block.

Theory of Knowledge

Core · both Diploma years

An hour is enough to test whether an argument answers its prescribed title, which is the most common structural failure in the essay. Also enough to choose and justify one exhibition object. Students usually leave these sessions with fewer words written and a clearer idea of what they are arguing.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three evening formats cover almost every Dubai request. All three run online, one-to-one, over live video with screen sharing, and all three end with a written note naming the next piece of work.

Single weekly hour, one subject

The standard arrangement: same tutor, same slot, one subject, one objective per session. Twelve weeks of this is twelve specific things fixed, which is usually enough to move a grade band where the losses are habits rather than missing content.

  • Objective agreed before the session, not decided during it
  • Work set between sessions and marked at the start of the next
  • Written note after every hour naming what to practise
  • Change of tutor on request, no reason required

Two short evenings instead of one long one

Two 45-minute sessions on different evenings rather than one 90-minute session. Better for younger students and for anyone working on fluency rather than understanding, because short repeated contact beats one long sitting when the goal is automaticity.

  • 45 minutes is the right length below Year 10
  • Different evenings, never stacked on one night
  • Suits number facts, vocabulary, mechanisms and recall work
  • Same tutor across both sessions wherever the timetable allows

Weekly evening hour plus a weekend long block

The hybrid that solves the evening hour's one real limitation. The weekday hour keeps content moving; a longer weekend block exists to sit a full timed paper and mark it, which a school night cannot hold. Progress is measured on the long blocks.

  • Evening hour for teaching, weekend block for measurement
  • A baseline paper sat within the first month
  • Loss list carried across both session types
  • Common from January onwards in Year 13

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The Dubai evening, hour by hour: what each slot can actually carry

Treat the evening as four different products. From 16:30 a student is tired but still able to take in new material, which makes it the only slot where genuinely new content teaching works well. From 18:00 the household is busiest and the student is at their most distracted, but the hour is still strong for guided practice with the tutor watching. From 19:30 new material stops landing and the useful work becomes consolidation of something already half-known. After 21:00 very little survives to the next morning.

Most families book on convenience, which puts the majority of sessions into the 18:00 to 20:00 window, and that is why it is the most contested time in the emirate. The better approach is to match the objective to the hour. If the aim is to teach integration by substitution, book 16:30 or accept that the first attempt will need repeating. If the aim is to drill twenty short recall questions or discuss an internal assessment draft, a 20:00 slot is perfectly adequate and much easier to get.

There is a practical dividend here too. Early and late slots are less contested, which means a wider choice of specialist, which for a Higher Level subject is the difference that matters. A family willing to take 16:30 or 20:30 will usually be offered a stronger tutor than one insisting on 18:30, because they are choosing from a larger pool. The table sets out what each slot is good for and who it fits.

Gulf Standard Time and the tutor pool: who is awake at 19:00 in Dubai

Dubai runs on Gulf Standard Time, four hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time, with no daylight saving change through the year. That single fact decides which tutors can teach a Dubai evening, and it is the piece of arithmetic nobody publishes. A 19:00 Dubai slot is 15:00 in London, 20:30 in Mumbai, 23:00 in Singapore and 11:00 in Toronto. A 16:30 Dubai slot is 12:30 in London, which is lunchtime for a working teacher and therefore harder to get than families assume.

The consequence is counter-intuitive. Later Dubai evenings, which parents often treat as a compromise, are frequently better covered than early ones, because they fall in the afternoon or early evening of the time zones where many subject specialists are based. A Dubai family taking 19:00 or 20:00 is drawing on tutors in the United Kingdom, Europe and South Asia who are working a normal day. A family insisting on 16:30 is drawing on a smaller pool, and will usually be offered fewer options.

Daylight saving matters at the margins. Dubai does not change its clocks; the United Kingdom and Europe do, twice a year. A slot agreed in October with a London-based tutor shifts by an hour relative to their day in late March, which is usually invisible but occasionally breaks a fixed arrangement at exactly the wrong moment in the Diploma calendar. It is worth confirming the slot survives both clock changes when a two-year arrangement is being set up.

03

Why a 21:00 session is usually a poor purchase

  • New material taught after 21:00 rarely survives to the next morning
  • Sleep debt degrades exactly what the Diploma papers test
  • Late slots suit review, planning and core-component discussion
  • A tutor should say no to a late booking for first-time teaching

Because the work does not survive the night. A Diploma student who finishes a tutoring hour at 22:00, then showers, messages friends and goes to bed at midnight, has given the new material no consolidation time at all. The session felt productive, the tutor was good, and by Thursday the method has gone. Parents then conclude that the subject is the problem or the tutor is, when the actual problem was the time on the clock.

There is a second cost that matters more in the Diploma than in any earlier stage. Sleep debt accumulates across a two-year programme, and a student short of sleep loses exactly the capacities the IB assesses: working memory under time pressure, sustained written argument, and accuracy in the final third of a long paper. Adding a late session to a week that is already short of sleep makes the examined performance worse while making the family feel more prepared.

So the honest position is that late slots should be rare, short and used for the right work. Reviewing a script already marked, planning the next week, choosing an exhibition object, talking through a research question: these survive a late hour. New content, timed practice and anything requiring sustained concentration do not. A tutor who takes a 21:00 booking for first-time teaching of a Higher Level topic without saying this is prioritising the booking over the outcome. If the only slot a family can offer is 21:00, the better plan is a shorter session twice a week or a weekend morning, and that is worth saying before the first invoice rather than after the third.

04

What a single evening hour fixes in each Diploma subject

The useful question before booking is not what does my child need help with, but what can be finished in sixty minutes. Those are different questions and the second one produces a plan. Most Diploma problems decompose into one-hour pieces: one technique, one question type, one criterion, one section of a draft. The pieces that do not decompose, a full timed paper, a complete internal assessment review, a Paper 1 simulation, need a longer sitting and should be booked as one.

The table below is the decomposition for the subjects Dubai families most often book. Read the third column as a warning rather than a limitation: it names the things that will fail if they are attempted in an evening hour, which is the most common way an otherwise good tutoring arrangement produces nothing. A student half way through a two-hour paper when the hour ends has learned less than one who did six questions properly.

The same logic applies to the week rather than the hour. Two subjects on two evenings works. Two subjects in one evening does not, because the second hour of concentration on a school night produces notes rather than learning. Three evenings a week is the practical ceiling for a Diploma student who also has homework in six subjects, and families who go beyond it usually find the homework suffering, which costs more than the tutoring gains. Where a student genuinely needs four subjects supported, the right answer is a weekend block and two evenings rather than four evenings, because the fourth evening comes out of sleep.

The evening hour against the drive to a tuition centre

The alternative most Dubai families actually consider is not another online tutor; it is a tuition centre in Al Barsha, Karama or Jumeirah with a 18:30 group class. The comparison that matters there is not the hourly rate but the total time the evening costs. A 90-minute class with 25 minutes of driving each way, in the evening peak on Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Khail Road, is two hours and twenty minutes of a school night for 90 minutes of group teaching in which a student may ask two questions.

An online one-to-one hour costs sixty minutes of the evening and delivers sixty minutes of attention directed at one student's actual losses. That is the entire argument, and it is an arithmetic argument rather than a quality claim. A good centre teacher may well be better than a mediocre online tutor; what a centre cannot give a Diploma student is an hour in which every question asked is their own and every piece of work marked is theirs.

Group classes still have a place. They are cheaper per hour, they suit content delivery where a whole cohort has the same gap, and some students work better with others in the room. The honest comparison is in the table: what each option costs in time and money, and what it is genuinely good at. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai, so the in-home column is included as market context rather than as something we sell.

Where the marks actually go, and which evening objectives recover them

  • Form losses: one hour marking your own scripts for a single fault usually ends it
  • Question reading: about three sessions of same-command-term practice
  • Internal assessment criteria: the highest-value evening hour in Year 12
  • Genuine content gaps: the one problem a weekly hour is slow at

Across Diploma subjects the losses cluster in four places, and three of the four are repairable in evening hours. The first is form: working not shown, units dropped, significant figures wrong, axes unlabelled, state symbols missing. The second is question reading: answering the topic rather than the command term. The third is the internal assessment, where the criteria rewarding evaluation and reflection are written last and thinnest. The fourth is genuine content absence, which is the one an hour a week struggles with.

Form losses are the cheapest to recover and the most neglected, because they feel beneath attention. A student who drops units twice a paper is giving away marks they earned, and one evening hour spent marking their own last three scripts for that single fault usually ends it. Question reading takes about three sessions: list every question by command term, then answer five of the same command term in a row across different topics until the shape of the answer becomes automatic.

Internal assessment criteria are the highest-value evening work in Year 12. One hour with the published criteria and a draft section in front of the student, asking which band this currently sits in and what the band above requires, changes the mark more than a month of content revision. The student makes every change themselves; a tutor who edits the draft has created a malpractice risk that falls on the candidate, not on the tutor.

07

Scheduling an evening slot that survives the term

A slot that collapses in week five has cost more than it delivered, and the collapse is almost always predictable. Three things kill a Dubai evening slot: an activity that starts at the same time in the second half of term, a parent's travel pattern that was not accounted for, and a slot chosen in the first week of September before the bus timetable settled. The fix is to provisionally book for two weeks and then fix the term slot once the real return time is known.

Ramadan reshapes the evening entirely. School days shorten, the useful study window moves to after Iftar, and the early evening becomes impractical for fasting households. The two patterns that work are a post-Iftar slot on weekdays and a late-morning slot at weekends. Booking the change a fortnight ahead matters because the post-Iftar window is the single most contested hour in the Dubai tutoring calendar, and it does not expand to meet demand.

The other predictable disruptions are the winter break in December, the spring break in late March or April, and the examination series itself. Most families keep the slot through the breaks at a reduced frequency rather than stopping, because restarting in January means re-establishing a routine from nothing. During the examination series itself the pattern usually inverts: sessions move to mornings between papers, and the evening slot is released. Telling us that a fortnight ahead costs nothing and means the slot can be held for the following year rather than lost.

08

Rates, coverage and how evening delivery actually works

Published 2026 market rates in Dubai put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour and a subject specialist at AED 200 to 450 or more, with budget online tutoring from around AED 45 to 150 and in-home visits at AED 180 to 500 with travel included. Published monthly figures include AED 799 for eight online sessions. Those come from published 2026 rate cards and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 survey, and they are market figures rather than IB Gram's price list.

The day and the hour do not generally change an online rate, which is worth knowing because the in-home market does charge differently for an evening visit, since the tutor is driving in peak traffic for one hour of work. What does change the number is the level of specialist you need: a Standard Level content gap and a Higher Level option topic are different purchases, and paying specialist rates for the former is a common and avoidable mistake.

Sessions run online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard and screen sharing, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. Coverage is stated before anything is booked: common Diploma subjects at both levels are matched within a few days, Higher Level option topics and second language A subjects take longer, and where the available tutor is based outside the UAE and teaching into Gulf Standard Time we say so rather than implying a local presence.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Evening availability in Dubai is shaped by when the student gets home and what else is in the diary, not by where the tutor is. These are the communities evening requests most often come from and the realistic start time in each.

Business Bay

Apartment living with short school runs to the Downtown and Al Quoz corridors, so a 16:30 or 17:00 start is realistic. Parents working nearby are often home earlier than the emirate average, which makes the earlier slot easier to supervise than it is in the outer communities.

Downtown Dubai

Similar rhythm to Business Bay, with activities concentrated inside the community rather than across the city. The 17:00 slot survives well here. Diploma students in the final term often add a second weekly hour rather than lengthening the first.

Dubai International Financial Centre

Small residential population, mostly apartments, with students travelling to schools in Al Barsha, Jumeirah and Oud Metha. Return times vary widely by school bus route, so the practical approach is to fix the slot after the first week of term rather than before it.

Dubai Creek Harbour

Newer community with longer runs out towards Mirdif, Al Garhoud and Nad Al Sheba. Students frequently arrive home after 16:30, which pushes the useful start to 17:30 or later. Sibling pairs in consecutive hours are common here.

Sobha Hartland

Schools within or adjacent to the community, so early evening works unusually well. Families often take 16:30 for a younger child and 18:00 for a Diploma student, which online delivery handles without anyone travelling between the two.

Meydan

Villa community with school runs towards Nad Al Sheba and Dubai Hills. Activity schedules are heavy on weekday evenings, so the 19:00 and 19:30 slots are the ones that hold. Consolidation work suits those hours better than new material.

Al Jaddaf

Apartment community close to the creek with students spread across Oud Metha, Al Garhoud and Academic City schools. Study space is the main constraint, so a fixed desk and headphones matter more than the exact start time.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Watch the first two weeks before fixing a slot

Note what time your child is actually home, fed and able to sit down, and what nights have activities in the second half of term. A provisional booking for two weeks costs nothing and prevents the week-five collapse that is the commonest failure in evening tutoring arrangements.

  2. 02

    Free 45-minute diagnostic lesson

One session, no card details taken, no obligation to continue. The tutor marks work your child has already done and returns the two or three specific recurring losses in writing. That list then becomes the source of every weekly objective rather than a general sense that a subject is hard.

  3. 03

Match the objective to the hour

New content needs 16:30 to 18:30. Practice and marking work at any point up to 20:00. Review, planning and core-component discussion survive a late slot. Choosing the hour to fit the work rather than the diary is the difference between twelve things fixed and twelve pleasant conversations.

  4. 04

One objective per session, written down

Each hour starts with the objective already agreed and ends with a note naming what to do before the next one. If a session opens with what shall we do today, fifteen minutes of a paid hour has gone on deciding. The notes also make the term reviewable, which a parent cannot do from memory.

Add a weekend block when measurement is needed

The evening hour cannot hold a full timed paper. Once a baseline is needed, usually by the end of the first month, book one longer weekend block to sit and mark a paper. Keep the evening hour for teaching and use the long block as the measurement point.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

One objective per hour, agreed in advance

The failure mode of evening tutoring is not the sixty minutes, it is arriving without a plan. Every session has a named objective set from the loss list and ends with a written note. Twelve weeks of that is twelve specific things fixed rather than twelve agreeable hours.

The hour matched to the work

New content taught at 16:30 lands; the same content taught at 21:00 usually does not survive the night. We say which work suits which slot rather than taking whatever booking is offered, including declining a late booking for first-time teaching of a Higher Level topic.

Gulf Standard Time works in your favour late

A 19:00 Dubai slot is mid-afternoon in the United Kingdom and early evening in South Asia, so the later Dubai hours draw on a wider specialist pool than the early ones. Families flexible about 19:00 or 20:00 are usually offered a stronger subject match.

No travel cost on either side of the hour

A tuition centre class costs the drive in both directions in the evening peak, and an in-home tutor prices that travel into the rate. An online hour costs sixty minutes of the evening and gives sixty minutes of attention to one student's own work.

Rates published with their sources

Every AED band here is attributed to a published 2026 rate card or Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 survey, with the format it applies to. They are the market's figures, not ours. Most pages ranking for this query publish no price at all.

Honest boundaries on coursework

A tutor teaches, explains criteria and asks questions; the student writes every sentence of their own internal assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge work. The school supervisor remains the official process. We state this plainly because the alternative puts the candidate at risk.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What time do evening IB sessions start in Dubai?+

Slots run from about 16:30 to 21:00 Gulf Standard Time, Sunday to Thursday, with weekend options separately. The practical earliest depends on your community: school buses return between roughly 15:15 and 16:30, so a 16:30 start works in communities where the school is close and a 17:30 start is more realistic in the outer developments. The 18:00 to 20:00 window is the most contested in the emirate, which is why early and late slots usually come with a wider choice of specialist.

Can my child really learn anything in one hour after a full school day?+

One thing, done properly. A single technique drilled to fluency, one question type practised until the pattern changes, one section of an internal assessment draft read against its criteria, or a set of six past-paper questions marked and understood. What an hour cannot do is cover a term's backlog, prepare three subjects at once or hold a two-hour timed paper. Sessions that try to do those produce thirty minutes of conversation and thirty of skimming, which is where evening tutoring usually goes wrong.

Is a 21:00 slot worth booking at all?+

Only for the right work. New material taught at that hour rarely survives to the next morning, because there is no consolidation time before sleep, and sleep debt in the Diploma years degrades exactly what the papers test: working memory under time pressure and accuracy late in a long paper. What does survive a late hour is reviewing a script already marked, planning the next week's work, choosing a Theory of Knowledge exhibition object or discussing an Extended Essay research question. A tutor should decline a late booking for first-time teaching.

Why are late Dubai slots sometimes easier to fill than early ones?+

Because of the clock. Dubai runs on Gulf Standard Time, four hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time, so a 19:00 Dubai session is 15:00 in London, 16:00 in continental Europe and 20:30 in Mumbai, all of which are ordinary working hours for a subject teacher. A 16:30 Dubai session is lunchtime in the United Kingdom, which is harder to staff. Families who can take 19:00 or 20:00 are drawing on a wider pool of specialists and usually get a better subject match for the same money.

Should we book two subjects on the same evening?+

No. The second hour of concentration on a school night produces notes rather than learning, and the student usually arrives at the second session already finished. Two subjects belong on two evenings, and three evenings a week is the practical ceiling for a Diploma student carrying homework in six subjects. Beyond that the homework suffers, which costs more than the tutoring gains. Where two subjects must share an evening, 45 minutes each with a break is better than two full hours.

How does an evening online hour compare with a tuition centre class?+

On arithmetic rather than quality. A 90-minute centre class with 25 minutes of driving each way in the Dubai evening peak costs about two hours and twenty minutes of a school night and delivers 90 minutes of teaching shared across a group, in which a student might ask two questions. An online one-to-one hour costs sixty minutes and delivers sixty minutes directed at that student's own losses. Centres are cheaper per hour and suit content delivery where a whole group has the same gap.

What does an evening session cost per hour in Dubai?+

Published 2026 market rates put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour and a subject specialist at AED 200 to 450 or more. Budget online tutoring runs around AED 45 to 150. In-home visits are AED 180 to 500 with travel built in, and the evening premium is real in that market because the tutor is driving in peak traffic for one hour of work. Online rates generally do not change with the hour. Those bands come from published rate cards and the Bestimate Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 survey.

How do I know the hour is being used properly?+

Ask for two artefacts. The objective, agreed before the session rather than decided during it, and a written note afterwards naming what was done and what to practise. Keep the notes. After six weeks you can read them in sequence and see whether the same problem is still being addressed, which is the single most useful review a parent can do. A session that opens with what shall we do today has already spent fifteen minutes of a paid hour deciding.

Can an evening hour be used for internal assessment work?+

It is one of the best uses of the hour, particularly in Year 12. One session with the published criteria and a draft section in front of the student, asking which band the section currently sits in and what the band above requires, moves a mark more than a month of general content revision. The student makes every change themselves. A tutor who rewrites a section has created a malpractice risk that falls on the candidate, and the school-appointed supervisor remains the official process throughout.

What happens to our evening slot during Ramadan?+

It moves, and the change is worth booking a fortnight ahead. School days shorten, the early evening becomes impractical for fasting households and the useful window shifts to after Iftar, with late-morning slots at weekends as the alternative. The post-Iftar hour is the most contested slot in the Dubai calendar and does not expand to meet demand. Timed practice is harder during fasting hours, so Ramadan evenings are usually better spent on draft work and consolidation than on new content.

Do we keep the slot through the winter and spring breaks?+

Most families do, at a reduced frequency, because restarting in January means rebuilding a routine from nothing. During the breaks the useful change is to move the session to a morning, where a student can take new content properly rather than at the end of a long day. The spring break in particular is the highest-value fortnight before the May series, and the families who use it are the ones who booked those slots in February.

My child's slot collapsed after a month. What went wrong?+

Almost always one of three things: an activity that started at the same time in the second half of term, a parent's travel pattern nobody accounted for, or a slot chosen in the first week of September before the school bus timetable settled. The fix is to book provisionally for two weeks, observe the real return time and the real activity schedule, then fix the term slot. That costs nothing and prevents the commonest failure in evening arrangements.

Can one tutor take two of my children in consecutive evening hours?+

Yes, where the subjects allow it, and online delivery is what makes it practical: two consecutive hours cost two hours, with no travel gap between them and no second travel charge. Each child gets a separate objective and a separate written note. Where the subjects do not overlap, two tutors can be booked back to back in the same window, which is common in households with a Middle Years student and a Diploma student.

Do I need a weekend block as well as the evening hour?+

Eventually, yes, if you want a measurement. The evening hour cannot hold a full timed paper plus the marking conversation, and without a timed paper there is no baseline to judge progress against. The usual arrangement is a weekly evening hour for teaching plus one longer weekend block a month to sit and mark a paper. The hour does the work; the block measures it. In the final term that ratio often reverses.

Where do evening lessons take place?+

Online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard and screen sharing, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. In the evening that distinction has a practical edge: nobody is driving anywhere, the hour starts on time, and the tutor is chosen for teaching your child's subject at the right level rather than for being able to reach your community before 18:00.

Fix the hour, then fix the objective

Watch two weeks of real return times before committing to a slot, then take the free 45-minute diagnostic, which takes no card details and carries no obligation. The tutor marks work your child has already done and returns two or three specific recurring losses in writing. Those become the weekly objectives, one per hour, each written down before the session and reviewed after it. If you want a number to judge the term by, add one longer weekend block a month and sit a full paper in it. The hour teaches; the block measures.
