IB & IGCSE in Dubai

What a 0606 entry actually means for your child

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606 is a separate syllabus sat alongside Mathematics 0580 or 0607, almost always in Year 11. It is not an extension of the ordinary maths course and it is not tiered: there is one route, reported on an A* to E scale, and the papers assume the candidate has already met every Extended topic in 0580. Most Dubai schools enter only a small group of candidates, which is why a parent who goes looking for an Additional Maths tutor in Dubai finds the subject missing from the list on most tutoring sites and present only as a line in a long subject menu.

The first shock for families is the content. Additional Mathematics 0606 introduces differentiation and integration, the factor and remainder theorems, logarithmic and exponential functions, permutations and combinations, the binomial expansion, circular measure in radians and vectors in two dimensions. A student who scored comfortably on 0580 can open a 0606 Paper 2 and recognise almost nothing on the first page. That is normal rather than alarming, and it is the gap a specialist session is for.

The second shock is pace. The course is usually taught in a single academic year, often in fewer timetabled periods than the main maths course, and in several Dubai schools it runs as a twilight or extension class outside the ordinary timetable. There is no coursework and no practical, so every mark is decided in two written papers in the exam room. Nothing is banked in advance, which makes the quality of written practice across the year the only variable a family can actually influence.

This is where the search for a home tutor starts. A parent wants someone sitting beside their child, working a question through on paper. That instinct is sound, because 0606 is learned by writing rather than by watching. What has changed is that the person doing the writing no longer has to be in the room, and in a subject this thin on local teachers, insisting on proximity narrows the choice to whoever happens to be free within a twenty-minute drive of your community.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; in-home tuition is a service we run only in India. In the UAE every lesson is one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time, and the trade is deliberate. Instead of the nearest available maths teacher, your child works with someone who teaches 0606 every week and can mark a question in front of them and explain the marks lost while the working is still fresh. The rest of this page sets out what that looks like week by week, what the Dubai market charges for both formats, and what evidence you should expect to see inside the first month of online 0606 tuition.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Additional Mathematics entry sits at one point on a longer route, and the programmes below are the ones a Dubai family is choosing between either side of the Year 11 decision. Each reads a 0606 grade differently when it looks at an application, and that difference is worth understanding before you buy a single hour of tuition.

0580Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics

The main maths course almost every British-curriculum school in Dubai enters, tiered into Core and Extended. Extended candidates meet algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability and statistics across two written papers. It contains no calculus, which is exactly why a strong 0580 grade is a poor predictor of comfort in 0606. The two syllabuses are usually taught by different teachers in different periods.

In Dubai the Extended tier is the default in the selective British schools and the near-default everywhere else, because sixth forms that offer A Level Maths or the IB Diploma generally want to see Extended content rather than Core. Families who later ask why 0606 feels impossible usually find their child was fine on Extended algebra and was never taught to differentiate anything.

0606Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics

A single-tier syllabus graded A* to E, assessed by two written papers of equal weight and no coursework. It is taken alongside 0580 or 0607 rather than instead of either. The content is deliberately a bridge to AS Level: functions and inverse functions, polynomials, surds and indices, logarithms, trigonometric identities, radians, series, permutations and combinations, vectors, and both differentiation and integration.

Dubai schools use 0606 in two quite different ways. Some enter a small top set as preparation for A Level Mathematics in their own sixth form. Others enter it as an enrichment option with limited timetable support and leave the harder half of the syllabus to be covered at speed in the spring term. Which of those your child is in changes the tutoring plan completely, and the honest way to find out is to ask the head of maths how many periods a week the class gets.

A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics

The two-year route most Dubai British-curriculum sixth forms offer after IGCSE, built from Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Probability and Statistics components. A candidate who has sat 0606 arrives already able to differentiate a polynomial, integrate to find an area, work in radians and expand a binomial, which removes a substantial amount of the first-term workload in Pure Mathematics 1.

This is the real argument for 0606 in Dubai. Sixth forms here run on tight timetables and large AS cohorts, and the first weeks of Pure Mathematics 1 move quickly through material 0606 has already introduced. Students who skipped Additional Mathematics can still do well, but they spend the autumn term learning calculus for the first time while their classmates are consolidating it.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme Mathematics

Split into Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, each at Standard or Higher Level. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is calculus-heavy and proof-heavy from the first term, and it is the route Dubai's IB schools steer strong mathematicians towards. Both courses carry an internal exploration written by the student over several months.

Several Dubai schools run both IGCSE at 16 and the IB Diploma at 18, so a Year 11 taking 0606 may be heading for Analysis and Approaches rather than A Level. The overlap is real but partial: 0606 covers differentiation and integration of standard functions, while Analysis and Approaches Higher Level adds proof by induction, complex numbers and far heavier algebraic manipulation. A 0606 grade is evidence of readiness, not a head start on the whole course.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The grid below is not a subject menu, because 0606 is one subject. It is the ten strands of the Cambridge 0606 syllabus, with what each one actually asks and where candidates in Dubai lose marks on it. Use it to tell your child's tutor where to start, rather than beginning at the front of the textbook in week one.

Differentiation

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Products, quotients, chains, trigonometric and exponential functions, then stationary points, increasing and decreasing functions, connected rates of change and small increments. Marks go on sign errors in the chain rule and on failing to justify whether a stationary point is a maximum or minimum. The second derivative test has to be shown, not implied.

Integration

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Integration of powers, exponentials and trigonometric functions, definite integrals, areas between curves and kinematics problems linking displacement, velocity and acceleration. The commonest loss is a missing constant of integration in an indefinite integral, followed by area questions where the limits are taken in the wrong order or a region below the axis is counted as positive.

Functions and inverse functions

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Domain and range, composite functions, inverse functions and the condition for one to exist, modulus functions and their graphs. Candidates lose marks by stating a range as an interval of the domain, by forgetting that an inverse requires a one-to-one function, and by sketching a modulus graph without marking where the reflection happens.

Logarithmic and exponential functions

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Laws of logarithms, change of base, solving equations that reduce to logarithmic or exponential form, and linearising a relationship to find constants from a straight-line graph. The straight-line-form question is the one Dubai students most often leave blank: taking logs of both sides of a power law and reading the gradient and intercept is a procedure, and it is teachable in one session.

Factors of polynomials

0606 Papers 1 and 2

The factor theorem, the remainder theorem, factorising cubics and solving the resulting equations. Marks are lost in the division step rather than the idea: a dropped sign in synthetic division wrecks the quadratic factor and every mark that depends on it. Checking a root by substitution before continuing costs twenty seconds and saves four marks.

Trigonometric identities and equations

0606 Papers 1 and 2

The reciprocal functions, the Pythagorean identities, proving identities and solving equations over a stated interval. The single largest source of lost marks in this strand is giving one solution where the interval contains three, or working in degrees when the question is set in radians. Reading the interval aloud before starting is a habit worth drilling.

Circular measure

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Radians, arc length, sector area and the composite shapes built from them, usually combined with triangle trigonometry in a multi-step question. Candidates who have only ever worked in degrees convert back and forth repeatedly and accumulate rounding error. Learning the small exact values in radians removes most of that, and it is a rote task that can be set as homework.

Permutations and combinations

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Arrangements, selections, restrictions such as items that must stay together or apart, and the distinction between order mattering and not. This strand rewards clear structure over cleverness: the examiner wants to see the case split written down. Students who try to do it in their heads lose method marks even when the final number is right.

Series

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Arithmetic and geometric progressions, sums to n terms, the sum to infinity and its condition, and the binomial expansion of a bracket raised to a positive integer power. Binomial questions asking for a specific term rather than the whole expansion are the ones most often attempted the long way, which runs the candidate out of time on a paper where time is tight.

Vectors in two dimensions

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Position vectors, magnitude, unit vectors, addition and scalar multiplication, and problems involving relative velocity or a point dividing a line in a given ratio. Marks are lost on notation as much as on method: a vector answer written without the column or unit-vector form, or a magnitude given as a vector, does not earn the accuracy mark.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families use 0606 support in Dubai, all delivered one-to-one over live video. The right one depends mostly on how much of the syllabus has been taught properly and how many weeks are left before the series your child is entered for.

Weekly one-to-one across the year

A single fixed slot from September, tracking the school's scheme of work a week or two behind so each session consolidates what has just been taught. This is the format that produces the clearest evidence, because there are enough marked pieces of work to show a trend rather than a snapshot.

  • One 60 or 90-minute session a week on the same evening
  • Homework set from the strand just covered, marked before the next session
  • A fortnightly note on what moved and what did not
  • Mock-paper weeks replace the usual lesson in January

Twice-weekly catch-up block

Six to eight weeks of two sessions a week, used when a student has joined a Dubai school mid-course or when the first half of the 0606 syllabus was taught at speed. One session teaches, the second marks and re-tests the same material, which is what turns recognition into recall.

  • Diagnostic paper first, then a strand order set by the result
  • Teach and re-test pairing within the same week
  • A written list of the topics still untouched, shared with you
  • Steps down to weekly once the gap closes

Exam-run paper clinic

Timed 0606 past papers in the eight weeks before the written exams, marked against the official mark scheme and returned with an error log rather than a score. Sessions are spent only on the questions that lost marks, which is a different use of an hour from teaching new content.

  • One full paper a week under exam timing
  • Marked to the published scheme, with method marks shown separately
  • An error log that groups mistakes by cause, not by topic
  • Final two weeks spent on the three recurring causes

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

Why a 0606 search in Dubai returns so little

  • 227 private schools in Dubai, with the UK curriculum at 37% of enrolment (2024-25)
  • Additional Mathematics is a top-set entry, not a whole-cohort subject
  • Group classes rarely exist because the local cohort cannot fill one
  • Fluency in how Cambridge marks calculus is the thing to screen for

A search for a Cambridge IGCSE Additional Maths 0606 home tutor in Dubai turns up pages about IGCSE maths, A Level maths and IB maths, and almost nothing about 0606 itself. The reason is cohort size. Dubai had 227 private schools and 387,441 students in 2024-25, with 37% of them on a UK curriculum, and yet Additional Mathematics is entered by a small top set in the schools that offer it at all. A tuition centre cannot fill a group class from that, and a freelance tutor cannot specialise in a subject that generates a handful of enquiries a year in any one community.

The effect on parents is a market that quotes for the subject and then staffs it with whoever teaches maths. That is not necessarily a bad tutor, but it is a specific risk: 0606 is the first syllabus in the Cambridge sequence where the teacher needs to be fluent in calculus and in the way Cambridge marks calculus. Someone who teaches 0580 well can explain differentiation correctly and still miss that the mark scheme wants the second-derivative justification written down.

This page is built around the opposite assumption. The subject is narrow, so the tutor should be narrow too, and the only way to find a genuinely narrow 0606 teacher for a Dubai family is to stop filtering by driving distance. That is the trade this page is asking you to make, and the sections below put numbers on both sides of it rather than asserting it.

02

The two 0606 papers, and what each one costs you

Additional Mathematics is assessed entirely by two written papers of equal weight. There is no coursework, no practical and no tiering, so the grade is decided by two sittings and the candidate's ability to produce complete written solutions under time pressure. Both papers draw on the whole syllabus, which means there is no safe topic to drop and no paper on which a weak strand can be avoided.

The practical consequence is that the mark scheme matters as much as the mathematics. Cambridge awards method marks for a correct approach and accuracy marks for the right value, and a candidate who writes only a final answer forfeits the method marks when the arithmetic slips. In a subject where multi-step questions are the norm, that distinction routinely separates two grades between students who understand the same amount.

A second consequence is that pacing has to be taught as a separate skill. Both papers are long enough that a candidate who is secure on every strand can still lose a grade by spending twenty minutes on a question worth five marks. Timed question sets, rather than whole papers, are the usual way to fix that in the autumn term, because a full paper takes an evening to sit and an evening to mark and produces one data point where six short sets produce six.

The table below maps each component and each strand group to where marks are actually lost, drawn from what comes back on marked 0606 past papers rather than from the syllabus summary. Treat the durations and mark totals as indicative and confirm them against the syllabus document for your child's exam year, because Cambridge revises assessment structures between syllabus cycles and the version that counts is the one printed for that series. The school's own exams officer holds that document and will share it on request.

03

The calculus cliff, and the four causes behind most lost marks

  • Notation: derivatives, vectors and ranges written in a form that cannot score
  • Missing justification: second-derivative test, conditions, domains
  • Interval handling: one solution given where three are required
  • Pacing: the last long question attempted with eight minutes left

Students who struggle with 0606 rarely struggle with all of it. Marked scripts tend to cluster around four causes, and separating them changes what a session is for. The first is notation: writing a derivative without saying what it is a derivative of, or giving a vector magnitude as a vector. These cost accuracy marks on questions the student has solved correctly, which makes them the cheapest marks available anywhere on the paper.

The second is the missing justification. Cambridge wants the nature of a stationary point established, not asserted, and wants the condition for an inverse or for a sum to infinity stated. The third is interval handling in trigonometry: a student who gives one solution where the stated range contains three has understood the identity and lost most of the question. The fourth is arithmetic under time pressure in the final long question, which is a pacing problem rather than a mathematical one.

Sorting a student's errors into those four buckets takes one marked paper and about twenty minutes. It is also the point at which tutoring stops being generic. A child whose problem is notation needs ten minutes of correction a week and nothing else; a child whose problem is pacing needs timed question sets and should not be taught any new content for a fortnight. Teaching both children the same syllabus order wastes most of the hour.

The fifth cause, which is not an error at all, deserves naming because it drives a good deal of unnecessary tutoring in Dubai. A student can be failing 0606 assessments because the underlying Extended 0580 algebra is not secure, in which case no amount of calculus teaching will help. Rearranging an equation, handling surds and manipulating algebraic fractions are assumed throughout 0606, and a diagnostic that tests only the new content will miss it entirely. Where that is the cause, the honest recommendation is to repair the foundation first, even though it is not what the family enquired about.

04

What a home tutor costs in Dubai, and what the alternative costs

Market rates for private tuition in Dubai are published patchily, and most tutoring sites in this market publish no figure at all. The bands below are collected from providers who do publish and from Bestimate's 2026 Dubai tutoring cost survey. They are the market, not an IB Gram price list: our own pricing is discussed on a consultation after the free trial lesson, because the right number depends on session length, frequency and how many weeks are left.

What the bands show is that an in-home visit sits above an online session of the same quality, and that the gap is travel rather than teaching. A tutor crossing Dubai at six in the evening is selling you an hour and absorbing ninety minutes of road time, which has to be priced somewhere. It usually arrives either as a higher hourly rate or as a minimum booking of two hours, and for a subject like Additional Mathematics a second unbroken hour is often less productive than a second session later in the week.

The scarcity premium works the same way. Because few people teach 0606, a parent asking for it locally is competing for a very short list, and quotes rise accordingly. Removing the travel constraint widens the list to anyone who teaches the syllabus and can work Gulf Standard Time, which is the mechanism by which online 0606 tuition is usually both cheaper and more specialised rather than one or the other.

Travel, traffic and a 0606 session that starts at seven

The argument for in-home tuition is that nobody has to travel. In Dubai that is only true for the family. Somebody still crosses the city, and the hour they lose shapes what they can offer: a tutor who commits to a 5pm slot in Arabian Ranches cannot also take a 6.30pm in Mirdif, so the number of weekly slots they can sell is low and the price of each has to carry the gap. That is the arithmetic behind the in-home band in the table above.

It also shapes the schedule your child gets. School buses in the outer communities often arrive after 4.30pm, which leaves a window that collides with Al Khail Road and Sheikh Zayed Road at their worst. Families who insist on a visit usually end up with either a late start, a tired child, or a weekend slot that eats the one morning the household has free. A video session at seven in the evening, after dinner and after the bus, uses the hour when a Year 11 is actually able to concentrate.

None of this makes in-home tuition a bad product. For a primary-age child who needs an adult physically present, it is often the right answer, and there are capable independent tutors in Dubai doing it well. For a sixteen-year-old working through 0606 past papers, the physical presence buys very little and the travel costs a lot, and that is the specific case this page is about. IB Gram does not run in-person tutoring in Dubai at all, so the comparison above is a comparison with the rest of the market rather than between two things we sell.

06

The evidence file: what the first twelve weeks should produce

The most useful question a parent can ask a tutor is not what they charge but what they will send you. Tutoring that produces nothing you can read is impossible to judge until the results arrive, and by then the year is over. The schedule below is what a weekly 0606 arrangement should generate, and it is deliberately written as a set of documents rather than as a promise about grades, because the documents are the part anyone can verify.

Week one is diagnostic. A timed paper or a set of questions across every strand, marked to the published scheme, produces a map of which strands are secure and which are not, and an error log sorted by cause rather than by topic. That log is the plan. If a tutor begins teaching before producing one, they are teaching the syllabus rather than your child, and in a single-year course there is no time for that.

From there the pattern is teach, set, mark, re-test. What you should see on your side is a marked script every week or two with the mark scheme alongside it, and a short written note every fortnight naming what moved and what did not. Grade movement is not promised here and no tutor can honestly promise it, but the direction of travel on repeated question types is visible within about six weeks, and it is visible to you rather than described to you.

The reason to insist on documents rather than updates is that a flat trend is useful information and a verbal reassurance is not. If the re-test at week six shows the same errors as the diagnostic, the arrangement needs to change: a different explanation, a different homework pattern, or a different tutor. Families who only receive cheerful messages find this out in June. Families who receive marked scripts find it out in October, while there is still a term in which to act.

07

Does your child actually need 0606?

  • Not required for A Level Mathematics or for either IB Diploma maths route
  • Strongest case: a confirmed A Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics plan
  • Weakest case: an unsecured 0580 Extended grade and no timetabled periods
  • Withdrawal is an entry-deadline decision, so it has to be raised early

Sometimes the honest answer to a tutoring enquiry is that the subject should be dropped. Additional Mathematics is an optional extra sat alongside a full IGCSE timetable, and it is not required for entry to A Level Mathematics or to either IB Diploma maths course. A student carrying nine or ten subjects, a weak 0580 position and a 0606 entry they did not ask for is usually better served by securing the grades that count than by spreading the same hours across one more paper.

The case for keeping it is strongest in three situations. The first is a student heading for A Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics in a Dubai sixth form, where the calculus introduction removes real pressure from the autumn term. The second is a student applying to competitive engineering or mathematics courses who wants evidence of depth beyond the standard IGCSE set. The third is simply a student who enjoys it and finds 0580 unchallenging, which is a better reason than it sounds.

The case for dropping it is equally clear: a predicted grade below the school's own threshold, a timetable with no periods allocated to the subject, or a child whose 0580 Extended grade is not yet secure. Schools in Dubai are generally willing to have this conversation in the autumn term, and the entry can usually be withdrawn before the final entry deadline. That deadline is the part families miss, and it is covered in the next section.

08

Cambridge deadlines, counted backwards from the paper

Cambridge runs its International GCSE exams in a June series and a November series, and a UAE centre sits one of those two. It is worth separating them from the other dates on Cambridge's calendar, because the March, May and October entries there are Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests, which are not IGCSE papers and carry none of the same consequences, and the February series Cambridge also operates is offered to centres in India rather than here. For 0606 that leaves June, with November as the resit route. The deadlines that govern either fall months before the papers: the final entry for a June series closes in the spring, with the exact day set per series and per timetable zone, and it reaches the family on the school's statement of entry rather than through any public page. Pearson's parallel November 2026 window, late October to 19 November 2026, had its own entry closed before the autumn term started.

Read that sequence backwards and the planning becomes obvious. The decision about whether a child sits 0606 at all is made roughly ten weeks before the first paper, by a school administrator working to an entry deadline. Mock results that arrive in late January are therefore evidence for a conversation that has already happened. A family that wants a say in the entry has to be looking at marked work in the autumn term, not in the spring.

One further Cambridge detail catches UAE families out. Every exam centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the centre's zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Your child's exact paper dates come from the school's own timetable for its zone, not from a date circulated in a parents' group. Check it against the school office and against cambridgeinternational.org.

09

Academic honesty in a subject with no coursework

Additional Mathematics has no coursework and no practical, which removes the commonest academic-honesty problem in international education before it starts. There is no portfolio for anyone to interfere with and no draft to be improved by an adult. That is worth saying plainly, because this market contains providers selling finished assessed work for other subjects, and families reasonably want to know where the line sits.

The line in a maths subject falls around past papers and mock scripts. A tutor may teach a topic, set questions, mark them against the published mark scheme and explain why a mark was awarded or withheld. A tutor may not supply material a school has not released, sit anything on a student's behalf, or hand over answers to a piece of work the school intends to use as evidence of attainment. Published past papers and mark schemes belong to Cambridge; the right way to use them is to work from the official source and link to it, not to redistribute copies.

It is also worth being clear about regulation, because it is a fair question to ask any tutor in Dubai. Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted by a MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, and individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. IB Gram is a matching platform rather than a licensed school or training institute in the UAE, and we do not claim any regulator's approval.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Dubai is wide, and the distance between a family's community and a tutor's is what makes in-home tuition awkward here rather than expensive. The notes below are about timing rather than geography: when a school bus actually reaches each community, and what that leaves for a weekday 0606 session.

Dubai Marina and JBR

Dense tower living with long lift waits and no parking a visiting tutor can rely on. Buses from the Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim schools drop late because of the Marina loop, so a 4.30pm start rarely works and a 6.30pm video session almost always does.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Villa communities within reach of several selective British schools, so children often get home early. The constraint here is the number of competing activities on a Jumeirah weekday evening, which argues for a fixed weekly 0606 slot booked for the whole term rather than week-by-week rescheduling.

Arabian Ranches and Mudon

A long bus run from most sixth-form-feeder schools, with arrivals after 4.30pm common in the Ranches. Families here feel the travel-cost problem most sharply: a tutor driving out from Deira for one hour is charging for at least ninety minutes of road time, in both directions.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer stock, a young Year 11 cohort and a good spread of British-curriculum schools within ten minutes. Even so, Al Khail Road at six in the evening is the limiting factor for anyone travelling, which is why most Dubai Hills 0606 sessions here run at 7pm on video after dinner.

Mirdif and Al Warqa'a

Established family areas on the eastern side with a heavy Indian and Arab expatriate Year 11 population and strong demand for maths. The cross-city drive from the Marina side is the reason local in-home rates sit at the top of the Dubai band, and the reason a specialist on video costs less here than a generalist in a car.

Al Barsha and Barsha Heights

Closest to the largest cluster of British-curriculum schools in the emirate, so the walk-in tuition centre is a real option in Barsha. What a centre cannot usually do is staff a 0606 class, because the cohort in any one year is too small to fill a group.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Al Furjan

Apartment-heavy communities with a lot of newly arrived families whose children joined a Dubai school mid-course. Catch-up on the first half of the 0606 syllabus is the usual request here, and it is the case where a twice-weekly block for six weeks does more than a weekly session for a term.

Selective British schools, western Dubai

The cluster where an Additional Mathematics entry is most likely to be a timetabled top-set course with its own teacher. Students here usually arrive at tuition with the algebra secure and the calculus half-finished, so sessions start at differentiation rather than at functions.

Large British-curriculum schools, central and eastern Dubai

Bigger year groups, broader ability ranges, and Additional Mathematics more often offered as an extension option with limited periods. The common pattern is a student who has met every topic once and practised none of them under timed conditions, which makes marked past papers the whole of the plan.

Schools are named here as context for the Dubai IGCSE market only. IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them, and which syllabus a school enters can change from year to year, so the statement of entry is the only reliable source for your child's codes.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the codes, not the subject

Send the statement of entry or the school's option sheet. We need to know whether the maths entry is 0580 or 0607, whether 0606 is actually on it, and which series your child is entered for. Those three facts set the plan, and guessing any of them wastes the first fortnight.

  2. 02

    Free diagnostic trial lesson

A 45-minute session at no charge, with no card required and nothing to cancel. The tutor works through questions across the 0606 strands, and you receive the strand map and error log afterwards whether or not you continue. It is the fastest way to find out if the subject is the problem or the pacing is.

  3. 03

A written plan with a starting strand

Before the first paid session you get a short plan naming the strand order, the homework pattern and what you will be sent each fortnight. If the diagnostic shows the 0580 Extended foundation is not secure, the plan will say so and recommend fixing that first, even though it is not what you enquired about.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions on a fixed Dubai slot

Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, usually between 5pm and 9pm on a weekday evening after the school bus. The slot stays the same each week, because a moving slot is the main reason a term of tuition quietly becomes nine sessions instead of fourteen.

  5. 05

Fortnightly evidence, and a change if it is flat

You receive marked scripts and a short note on what moved. If repeated question types are not improving after about six weeks, the response is a changed approach or a changed tutor, not more hours of the same. Nobody can promise a grade, and anyone who does is telling you something about themselves.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The tutor teaches 0606, not maths in general

Matching starts from the syllabus code rather than the subject name. Someone who teaches Additional Mathematics every week knows that Cambridge wants the second-derivative test written down and that the straight-line-form question is worth drilling, which is a different body of knowledge from teaching 0580 well.

Marking against the published scheme, every week

Work is marked to the official mark scheme with method and accuracy marks separated, so you can see which marks were lost to understanding and which to notation. A score alone tells you nothing you can act on; a marked script with the scheme beside it tells you what next week should cover.

Removing the drive widens the shortlist

Filtering by driving distance in a subject this narrow leaves a handful of candidates in any Dubai community. Filtering by syllabus and by availability on Gulf Standard Time leaves a longer list of people who actually teach the course, which is the whole reason the delivery is online.

Scheduling built around the Dubai week

Sessions sit after the school bus and before a Year 11 stops being useful, and they move for mock weeks, Ramadan timings and the exam run rather than ignoring them. The weekly slot is fixed for the term so the arrangement does not erode into occasional lessons.

Plain limits, stated before you pay

No grade promises, no claim of regulator approval, no invented statistics. If no 0606 specialist is free at your preferred time we say so and offer the alternatives rather than sending a generalist. Market rates on this page are attributed to whoever published them, and they are not our price list.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Can I get a 0606 home tutor in Dubai who comes to the house?+

Independent tutors and some agencies in Dubai do travel to homes, and market rates for that sit roughly in the AED 180-500 band according to Bestimate's 2026 survey, usually with a two-hour minimum to make the drive worth it. IB Gram does not sell that service anywhere in the UAE; in-home tuition is something we run only in India. For your child the practical question is whether a visit is worth the travel premium and the narrower choice of tutor it forces. For Additional Mathematics, where the teaching happens on paper and the scarce resource is someone who knows the syllabus, our answer is no.

Is Additional Mathematics 0606 taught in most Dubai schools?+

No. Dubai had 227 private schools in 2024-25 and the UK curriculum accounted for 37% of enrolment, but Additional Mathematics is usually offered to a top set rather than a whole year group, and a good number of schools do not enter it at all. Some run it as a timetabled course with its own teacher; others offer it as an extension option with very few periods. The difference matters enormously for tutoring, because the second group arrives having met the calculus once and practised it almost never. Ask the head of maths how many periods a week the class gets.

How many hours a week does a Dubai Year 11 need for 0606?+

One well-structured hour a week from September, with homework marked between sessions, is enough for a student whose school teaches the course properly and whose 0580 Extended work is secure. Two sessions a week for six to eight weeks is the usual shape for a student who joined mid-course or whose school covered the first half at speed. In the eight weeks before the papers, the useful unit stops being teaching hours and becomes timed papers marked to the scheme. More hours on top of untouched homework changes nothing.

What does 0606 cover that Cambridge 0580 does not?+

The headline additions are differentiation and integration, which 0580 does not contain in any form. Beyond calculus, 0606 adds the factor and remainder theorems, logarithmic and exponential functions and their laws, radians and circular measure, trigonometric identities and equations over a stated interval, permutations and combinations, the binomial expansion, series including sums to infinity, inverse and composite functions with domain and range, and vectors in two dimensions. That is why a strong 0580 grade predicts very little about 0606 comfort, and why a 0606 tutor needs to be fluent in calculus rather than merely good at maths.

My daughter scored well in 0580 but is failing 0606 mocks. Why?+

This is the most common enquiry on this subject and it usually has a diagnosable cause rather than a general one. The four patterns that show up on marked scripts are notation that cannot score, missing justification where Cambridge wants a condition or a second-derivative test written down, incomplete solution sets in trigonometry where the interval contains more answers than were given, and arithmetic collapsing on the last long question because of pacing. All four are fixable and none of them mean she cannot do the mathematics. One marked paper sorted by cause will tell you which it is.

Does 0606 have coursework or a practical component?+

No. Additional Mathematics is assessed entirely by two written papers of equal weight, with no coursework, no practical and no tiering into Core and Extended. Everything is decided in the exam room, which has two consequences. There is nothing banked in advance to cushion a difficult paper, so written practice across the year is the only lever a family has. It also removes the academic-honesty problem that attaches to portfolio subjects, because there is no draft for an adult to improve and no assessed work for anyone to interfere with.

What is the market rate for an Additional Maths tutor in Dubai?+

Published Dubai figures cluster into bands rather than a single rate. Budget online tutors advertise from around AED 45-150 an hour, qualified subject tutors online from AED 150-300, in-home visits AED 180-500 including travel, and IGCSE or IB specialists AED 200-450, with premium named tutors quoted as high as AED 650. Those come from providers' own published pages and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai survey, not from us. Additional Mathematics tends to sit at the upper end of whichever band applies, because the number of people who teach it locally is small.

Can a 0606 session run after the Dubai school bus gets home?+

Yes, and for most families it should. Buses serving the outer communities often arrive after 4.30pm, and the hour that follows is the worst of the Al Khail Road and Sheikh Zayed Road traffic as well as the hour a sixteen-year-old is least able to concentrate. A session between 6.30pm and 8pm Gulf Standard Time, after dinner, is the slot that reliably works, and because the lesson is over live video there is no travel to add to either side of it. The slot is then fixed for the term.

Which 0606 topics should we fix first with eight weeks left?+

With eight weeks remaining the order should come from a marked paper rather than from the syllabus. In practice the highest-yield sequence for most candidates is the cheap-mark strands first, because they pay back fastest: notation corrections, series and binomial recall, circular measure in exact radians, and vector notation. Calculus comes next and takes the most time, so it needs the middle weeks. The final fortnight should be timed papers only, spent on the recurring causes in the error log rather than on new content, and no new topic should be introduced in the last ten days.

Do you mark my child's own 0606 past-paper scripts?+

Yes, and it is the part of the arrangement worth paying for. Work is marked against the published Cambridge mark scheme with method marks and accuracy marks shown separately, so you can see whether a mark was lost to the mathematics or to the way it was written down. You receive the marked script, not just a score, along with an error log grouped by cause. Past papers and mark schemes belong to Cambridge and we work from the official source and link to it rather than redistributing copies.

Is 0606 graded on the same nine-point scale as 0580?+

No. Cambridge reports Additional Mathematics 0606 on an A* to E scale, which is narrower than the grading used on tiered syllabuses and has no Core and Extended split underneath it. There is one route through the subject and one set of papers. For a Dubai family this matters in two ways: a sixth-form application reads a 0606 grade as evidence of depth rather than as part of the headline count of IGCSE passes, and the UAE equivalency rules for the British track count accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects rather than optional extras, so 0606 is a bonus rather than a requirement.

Does a Dubai tutor need a MoHRE permit to teach 0606 privately?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone offering private tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Ask any tutor directly, and apply through the MoHRE smart app or the service page for private tutor licensing.

How does 0606 help with A Level Maths in a Dubai sixth form?+

It front-loads the first term. A candidate who has sat Additional Mathematics arrives in Pure Mathematics 1 already able to differentiate and integrate standard functions, work in radians, expand a binomial and use the factor theorem. Dubai sixth forms run large AS cohorts on tight timetables and move through that material quickly, so a student meeting calculus for the first time in September is learning while classmates consolidate. It is a head start rather than a requirement: A Level Mathematics assumes only Extended 0580 content as a formal entry point.

What happens if no 0606 specialist is free on our preferred evening?+

We say so rather than sending a generalist and calling it a 0606 tutor. The usual options are a different evening with a specialist, a slightly later slot on your preferred day, or a short wait while a slot opens, and in the meantime we will tell you honestly whether the work can start with a strong 0580 Extended teacher. Demand for this subject concentrates between January and May, so the week to ask is in the autumn term. Availability is a real constraint and concealing it would only waste your first month.

Can we start online 0606 tuition in the middle of the school year?+

Yes, and most families do, because the problem usually becomes visible after the first set of 0606 assessments. A mid-year start changes the shape rather than the content: the first session is a wider diagnostic because more of the syllabus has been taught, and the early weeks run twice weekly to close the gap before settling to one session. What a mid-year start cannot do is replace a term of missed practice in a few weeks, so the plan will name the topics that will not be covered and let you decide the priority.

Start with one marked paper, not with a package

If you take one thing from this page, make it the order of operations. Before buying hours, get a 0606 paper marked against the published scheme and sorted by cause, because that single document decides whether your child needs teaching, drilling or pacing work, and those are three different jobs. The free 45-minute trial lesson produces it, and you keep the strand map and error log whether or not you book anything afterwards. Send the statement of entry with the maths codes on it and the series your child is entered for, tell us which evenings work on Dubai time, and we will tell you plainly whether a 0606 specialist is free and what the first six weeks would cover.
