Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry 4CH1 Home Tutor in Dubai

Most families looking for an Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry 4CH1 home tutor in Dubai have a marked paper in front of them and cannot tell what it says. This page is written to fix that. It goes through what Paper 1C and Paper 2C actually ask, the exact words a Pearson scheme awards for an observation or an explanation, and the half dozen places chemistry marks reliably disappear. Lessons are one to one over live video; IB Gram does not arrange home visits in the UAE.

What the paper asks, and what your child's script says about it

A marked chemistry script is a document most parents cannot read, and schools rarely have time to translate it. The grade is at the front, a few comments appear in the margin, and somewhere inside it there is a precise account of what went wrong. That account is usually not about understanding chemistry. It is about a missing state symbol, an equation balanced on one side only, an observation described as a colour change rather than as a white precipitate, or a two-step calculation abandoned after the first step.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry is examined through Paper 1C, two hours for 110 marks, and Paper 2C, one hour fifteen minutes for 70 marks. That is 180 marks in total, with Paper 1C carrying 61.1% of the subject total and Paper 2C 38.9%. The entry is untiered, so there is no Foundation or Higher decision to make, and the result is reported on the 9 to 1 scale. There is no coursework and no separate practical examination, though practical chemistry is examined throughout both written papers.

The specification is organised into four sections: Principles of chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry and Organic chemistry. A student does not experience it that way. They experience a sequence of question stems, each with a particular shape of answer that earns credit, and most of the gap between a grade 6 and a grade 8 script lives in whether the student recognises the shape. Describe a test for a sulfate wants a reagent, a condition and an observation in that order. Explain in terms of structure wants the structure and then the consequence, as two separate statements.

That is why this page is organised around script detail rather than around topics. It sets out the equation types a 4CH1 candidate must write, the precise observation wording for the qualitative tests, the question stems and what each one awards, and the presentation conventions that lose marks silently: state symbols, significant figures, units on concentration answers, charges written on ions. None of this is advanced chemistry. All of it is examined, and almost all of it is teachable inside a handful of sessions once somebody has read the script and named the pattern.

On delivery, the honest position first. Parents search for a home tutor because the child is at home in Dubai and the problem is urgent, and the phrase deserves an answer rather than a deflection. The in-home chemistry market in the emirate is real, and published rates sit at AED 180 to 350 an hour in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table, with home tutors advertising to AED 500, largely because travel sits inside the figure. IB Gram does not operate in it. Lessons are delivered one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are a service offered only in India. For a script-level problem, working on a shared screen with the marked paper open is in several respects better than sitting beside it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three things change what a 4CH1 student needs, and none of them is the specification. They are how long the school's Key Stage 4 runs, what the student was studying before they arrived in Dubai, and what else is on the timetable alongside chemistry.

YEAR 9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

The year before 4CH1 starts

The cheapest place to intervene in chemistry and the most commonly skipped. The skills that decide a 4CH1 grade are mostly mathematical and notational: ratio, rearranging, standard form, writing formulae from charges, balancing. A Year 9 student who can do those arrives at the specification able to learn chemistry rather than fighting arithmetic. One term of weekly work here removes a problem that costs several times as much to remove in Year 11.

Dubai schools differ on whether Year 9 is a general science year or already the first year of a three-year Key Stage 4. Ask the head of science which model applies and request the scheme of work. A three-year course means the first 4CH1 content lands in Year 9 and the student is being assessed on it a full two years before the paper.

4CH1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry

Two written papers, 180 marks, untiered, no coursework, four specification sections. The qualification rewards precision more than breadth: a student who writes equations correctly, gives observations in the scheme's words and completes multi-step calculations will out-score a student who knows more chemistry and presents it loosely. That is an encouraging fact, because precision is teachable in weeks and breadth is not.

Check the exam entry statement for the code. Dubai schools frequently enter Pearson for one science and Cambridge for another, and Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry is assessed differently, including its practical arrangements. A family tutoring to the wrong specification usually discovers it in the first session, which is a wasted hour that a two-minute check prevents.

MANDATORYAll year groups in Dubai private schools

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside chemistry

These subjects are required in every Dubai private school regardless of the international curriculum the school is licensed for, and they occupy real timetable space that a chemistry revision plan has to respect. Families budgeting tutoring hours routinely forget them, then find there is no free evening left. Knowing the weekly load before planning a chemistry block avoids a commitment nobody can keep.

KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, with the advice that no mandatory lesson run shorter than 25 minutes, and the requirements applied from the start of the 2025-26 academic year.

TRANSFERAny point in Years 10 and 11

Arriving mid-course from another curriculum

Dubai's school population turns over constantly, and a student joining a 4CH1 class from an American, Indian or national-curriculum background has a specific and diagnosable gap rather than a general weakness. Usually it is notation and equation convention rather than content: the chemistry is familiar, the way Pearson expects it written is not. Three or four sessions on convention closes most of it.

Dubai's private sector offered 17 different curricula across 227 schools in 2024-25, with 387,441 students enrolled, so mid-course transfers between curricula are ordinary here rather than exceptional. Seven new private schools join the 2026-27 intake, adding 16,846 places, which means more cohorts assembled from mixed backgrounds in the same chemistry classroom.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The ten items below are not topics. They are the discrete skills a 4CH1 script is marked on, which is the level at which lost marks are actually diagnosable. Each lists where it is examined and the error that recurs.

Writing formulae from charges

Prerequisite for every equation question

Deriving the formula of a compound from the charges on its ions, including polyatomic ions such as sulfate, nitrate, carbonate and ammonium. A student who cannot do this cannot write a correct equation, so the error propagates through the whole paper. The recurring mistake is a missing bracket in a formula with two polyatomic ions.

Balancing symbol equations

Paper 1C and Paper 2C

Balancing by inspection without altering a formula. The error that costs marks is changing a subscript to balance an equation, which produces a different substance. Students also stop after balancing the atoms they noticed first, leaving hydrogen or oxygen unbalanced because those were counted last.

Ionic equations and spectator ions

Precipitation, neutralisation and redox questions

Writing the net ionic equation by removing the ions present unchanged on both sides, with charges and state symbols intact. A compact, teachable skill most students have never been taught explicitly, and securing it recovers marks in salt preparation, precipitation tests and electrolysis in the same two or three sessions.

Half equations at electrodes

Electrolysis questions in both papers

Writing the oxidation and reduction half equations at the anode and cathode, with electrons balanced. The usual loss is an unbalanced electron count or an equation written with the electrons on the wrong side. Once secure, electrolysis becomes one of the most predictable mark sources on the paper.

Two-step mole calculations

Section 1 and Section 3 questions

Mass to moles, moles through the equation ratio, moles back to mass or volume. Single-step questions are usually answered; two-step questions are where scripts stop halfway and earn one mark of three. Writing the equation ratio explicitly before substituting is the habit that fixes it.

Titration and concentration arithmetic

Physical chemistry questions

Moles per cubic decimetre, grams per cubic decimetre, converting burette readings in cubic centimetres, and using the mole ratio from the equation. The characteristic error is an answer out by a factor of a thousand with otherwise correct working, which is a unit problem rather than a chemistry one.

Qualitative analysis observations

Inorganic chemistry and practical questions

Flame colours, precipitate colours with sodium hydroxide, tests for carbonate, sulfate, halide and ammonium ions, and the gas tests. Marked on exact wording: a white precipitate scores where a colour change does not. Pure recall with a predictable question style and among the cheapest marks available.

Bond energy and sign conventions

Physical chemistry questions

Calculating overall energy change from bond energies broken and formed, and assigning the correct sign. Most of the loss here is a sign error rather than an arithmetic one, usually because the student added the two totals instead of subtracting, or dropped the negative on an exothermic answer.

Equilibrium explanation answers

Reversible reactions and industrial conditions

Stating the direction of shift and the reason, in two separate statements. Answers that say the equilibrium moves without saying which way, or that name a condition without saying what it does to yield, score half. The Haber process is the context most often used in these questions.

Organic naming, isomers and purification

Section 4 and practical questions

Naming within the homologous series, drawing and identifying structural isomers, and describing filtration, crystallisation and distillation in the right order. Organic questions are pattern-based and the recall load is smaller than students assume once the general formulae are secure.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

All three formats below are delivered one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and all three begin with the student's marked script open on a shared screen rather than with a topic list.

Script-reading session

A single session spent entirely on one marked paper: every lost mark located, categorised and explained to the student in the language of the scheme. Families often buy exactly one of these and act on it themselves, which is a legitimate outcome and sometimes the most useful hour available.

  • One marked paper, read line by line with the student
  • Lost marks sorted by cause and counted
  • Written summary afterwards naming the largest category
  • No commitment to anything beyond the hour

Convention and notation block

Four to six sessions on the presentation layer: formulae from charges, balancing without altering formulae, ionic and half equations, state symbols, units and significant figures. Short, mechanical and the fastest visible improvement available in 4CH1 for a student who already understands the chemistry.

  • Equation types drilled one at a time
  • State symbols and charges required on every line
  • Two-step calculations written with the ratio shown explicitly
  • Unseen re-test a fortnight after the block ends

Weekly one-to-one through the course

A fixed hour each week moving with the school's teaching order, so each new section is consolidated as it is taught rather than revisited under pressure. The format that keeps organic chemistry from becoming an emergency, because Section 4 arrives on prepared ground.

  • Same slot each week, held for the term
  • Follows the school's scheme of work
  • Specification-referenced written feedback after each session
  • Post-Iftar alternative agreed before Ramadan begins

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a home tutor would do, and what happens over video instead

The phrase home tutor describes a delivery method, and the honest answer is that IB Gram does not use it anywhere in the UAE. Chemistry lessons run one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are a service offered only in India. The in-home market in Dubai is real and families use it: published rates run AED 180 to 350 an hour in Bestimate's 2026 table, with individual home tutors advertising AED 200 to 500, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online and AED 200 to 450 and above for a specialist.

For a script-level chemistry problem, the comparison is not obvious in the direction most parents assume. The work in a 4CH1 session is reading a marked paper, writing equations, correcting notation and redrafting an observation answer. All of that happens on a surface both people can write on. Over video that surface is a shared screen that captures everything: the annotated question, the corrected equation, the redrafted answer. In a living room it is the student's own exercise book, and whatever the tutor wrote in it leaves with the handwriting.

What an in-home session genuinely gives is presence. A person in the room, a phone put away, and a parent who can see the hour happening. Those matter, particularly for a younger student or one who will not start work unsupervised. The counterweight is selection: a visiting tutor must be someone who could reach that community at that hour, which in the newer interior communities of Dubai is a small group and has nothing to do with whether they have taught Pearson 4CH1. The table sets the two side by side on the things that matter for this specification.

02

The equations a 4CH1 candidate has to be able to write

Equation writing is the load-bearing notation skill of this specification, and it is examined in four distinct forms that students routinely treat as one. A word equation, a balanced symbol equation, a net ionic equation and an electrode half equation each have different rules, and a candidate who has only practised the second form will lose marks on the other three without understanding why. Separating them explicitly, and drilling them separately, is a couple of sessions of work with a disproportionate return.

The commonest single error in the whole subject sits here: balancing an equation by changing a subscript inside a formula. It is understandable, it produces a balanced line, and it describes a different substance, so it earns nothing. The second commonest is stopping once the atoms the student noticed first are balanced, which usually leaves hydrogen or oxygen out. The third is omitting state symbols in a question that required them, which is a presentation mark rather than a chemistry one and is lost silently.

Charges are the other half of the problem. A student who cannot derive a formula from ionic charges cannot write any of the four equation forms reliably, because every one of them starts with correct formulae. Polyatomic ions are where this breaks: sulfate, nitrate, carbonate, hydroxide and ammonium, and particularly the bracket that is needed when two of them appear. Fifteen minutes of formula writing at the start of each session, cold, closes this inside a month.

FOUR EQUATION FORMS IN 4CH1 AND THE RULES FOR EACH

03

Question stems, and what each one actually pays for

Chemistry marks are lost in bulk to answering a different question from the one printed. Pearson stems are consistent across series, and each has a shape of answer the scheme rewards. Describe a test for wants a reagent, a condition if there is one, and an observation. Explain in terms of structure wants the structure and then its consequence, as two statements. Suggest wants a plausible reason applied to an unfamiliar context, not a recited one. State wants one line.

A student who has never seen a mark scheme does not know any of this, and most have not. The single most efficient session in 4CH1 tutoring is often the one spent going through a past paper with the scheme open, question by question, counting how many separate statements the scheme is looking for and matching them to the marks available. Two marks means two things. The realisation that the paper is telling the student how much to write changes behaviour permanently and takes about an hour.

The table below lists the stems that recur and what each pays for. The right-hand column is the diagnostic one for a parent reading a marked script: if the losses cluster on explain stems, the problem is answer structure rather than chemistry, and that is four sessions of work. If they cluster on calculate stems, it is arithmetic. If they cluster on describe a test, it is recall, and that is the cheapest repair in the subject.

04

Qualitative analysis: the observations marked on exact wording

Tests for ions and gases are the most predictable marks on a 4CH1 paper and among the most frequently dropped, because they are marked on the words rather than on the sense. A candidate who writes that the solution turns cloudy where the scheme wants a white precipitate has described the right event and scored nothing. The remedy is not more chemistry; it is learning a short table of standard observations in standard phrasing, which is one or two hours of work and recovers marks on every paper.

The language conventions are worth stating explicitly because students guess them. Precipitates are described by colour and as a precipitate. Gas evolution is effervescence or bubbles of gas, with the identity established by a named test. Limewater turns milky, not white. A glowing splint relights in oxygen; a lighted splint gives a squeaky pop with hydrogen. Damp red litmus turns blue with ammonia and is bleached by chlorine. Each of these is a fixed form of words.

The second half of the skill is knowing which test identifies what and in what order a question wants it. Add dilute acid first for a carbonate; add dilute hydrochloric acid before barium chloride for a sulfate; add dilute nitric acid before silver nitrate for a halide. Students who learn the reagents without the sequence lose the order mark. The table gives the standard set in the wording a scheme recognises, and it is worth printing and keeping beside the student's revision.

STANDARD TESTS AND THE OBSERVATION WORDING THAT SCORES

05

State symbols, units and significant figures: the marks lost in silence

  • State symbols required on every equation unless the question says otherwise
  • Charges written on every ion in a net ionic or half equation
  • Units on every concentration, mass, volume and energy answer
  • Full precision carried through the working; rounding only at the end
  • Significant figures matched to the least precise datum given in the question

Some 4CH1 marks are lost without the student ever making a chemical error. A correct equation without the state symbols the question required. A correct concentration without the unit. A correct calculation rounded to one significant figure where the data supports three. A correct ionic equation with the charges omitted. None of these is a misunderstanding, and all of them are counted. Across a 180-mark qualification this category commonly accounts for a grade boundary's worth of marks.

They persist because nobody flags them. A classroom teacher marking thirty scripts marks the chemistry and moves on; the student sees a tick with a mark deducted somewhere and reads it as carelessness. Named explicitly and required on every line for a few weeks, the whole category closes. The rule we use in sessions is simple and slightly pedantic: nothing is finished until it carries its units, its charges and its state symbols, and nothing is rounded until the final line.

Significant figures deserve their own mention because students handle them inconsistently. The convention to teach is to carry full precision through the working and round only at the end, to the precision of the least precise datum given. A student who rounds at each step produces an answer that drifts and sometimes falls outside the acceptable range the scheme allows, which converts a correct method into a wrong answer. Both habits are mechanical, teachable and visible in a marked script within three weeks.

06

Practical chemistry examined without a practical paper

4CH1 has no coursework and no separate practical examination, yet practical chemistry runs through both written papers. Students are asked to name apparatus, give a method in sequence, identify variables, describe observations precisely, choose a purification technique and justify a safety precaution. Because nothing appears on the examination timetable, this is the least-revised material on the specification and the marks are available on every paper.

The purification questions are the most predictable. Filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid; crystallisation recovers a soluble solid from its solution; simple distillation separates a solvent from a dissolved solid; fractional distillation separates liquids with different boiling points. A salt preparation wants add excess, filter off the unreacted solid, evaporate and crystallise, in that order. Students who know the four techniques and the order of a salt preparation answer most practical questions correctly.

Delivery deserves one plain statement. IB Gram does not run laboratory sessions in Dubai and does not send tutors to UAE addresses, because home visits are a service offered only in India. The laboratory work belongs to the school, which has the equipment and the technician. What a tutor adds over live video is conversion: the student's own practical write-up opened on a shared screen and marked the way Pearson words these questions, so that an afternoon already spent in a school laboratory becomes marks on a paper. Safety answers are worth drilling in the same hour, because they are marked on specificity: wear eye protection because the acid is corrosive earns credit where be careful does not, and a reason attached to a precaution is what the scheme looks for.

07

What one 4CH1 session fixes, and the order it happens in

  • Session 1: every lost mark located and sorted by cause, largest pile named
  • Sessions 2-5: the largest pile only, with an unseen re-test two weeks later
  • Session 6 onwards: timed sections marked against the real scheme
  • Content teaching only where the diagnosis found a real gap
  • Written feedback after each session, referenced to a specification point

The first session is not a lesson and should not feel like one. The student brings their most recent marked chemistry: a mock, a topic test, a returned past paper. The tutor locates every lost mark, sorts them by cause into notation, arithmetic, recall, answer structure and genuine content gap, counts each pile and names the largest. That statement is what a family gets at the end of the free thirty minutes, and it is usually more specific than anything the school report said.

The second through fifth sessions work on the largest pile only. This is the part families find counter-intuitive, because covering content feels like progress and fixing notation feels like admin. The arithmetic is against them: a student losing eleven marks to state symbols, missing units and unbalanced equations will gain more from four sessions on notation than from a term of content revision, and the notation work also makes every future topic cheaper to learn.

From roughly the sixth session the pattern becomes maintenance plus timed practice. A section of a past paper each week under real conditions, marked against the real scheme, with the categories tracked so a parent can see whether the original problem has gone or has simply moved. Content teaching enters only where the diagnosis found a genuine gap, which in chemistry is most often rates, energetics or the organic section that the school has not yet reached. The order is deliberate rather than conventional: notation first because it is quick and compounds, then arithmetic because it recovers whole question types, then recall because it is cheap, and content teaching last because it is the slowest thing to buy and the easiest to get from the school.

08

Honesty, past papers and the permit question

4CH1 carries no coursework, which removes the commonest academic-honesty risk in international qualifications. What remains is school-set work, mocks and homework, and the line is still worth stating plainly: a tutor teaches, questions, marks and gives feedback on work the student has written. A provider offering to produce assessed work is selling the student a risk, and at least one operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments for other qualifications at AED 3,750, which is an integrity breach the student carries rather than the seller.

Past papers and mark schemes belong to Pearson. A tutor should name the series and the paper, point to the official source and work through material the school has already issued, rather than distributing scans. Reproducing secure or unreleased material is a copyright problem and, for an unreleased paper, a malpractice exposure for the candidate. Any provider advertising a library of mark schemes as a feature is describing something it should not be circulating.

On permits: private tutoring in the UAE is lawful and regulated, under the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so ignore any figure quoted as fact. Dubai's schools are regulated by KHDA; IB Gram holds no approval, licence or endorsement from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Pearson or Cambridge.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Because lessons run over video, the thing that varies between Dubai communities is not access to a tutor but access to forty-five uninterrupted minutes. These notes are about where and when a 4CH1 student can realistically work on a marked script.

Emirates Hills and Jumeirah Islands

Large homes with a dedicated study space, which removes the commonest obstacle to script work. The practical constraint is competing commitments: students here often carry sport or music alongside three sciences, so the chemistry slot needs fixing for the term in advance.

Arabian Ranches 2 and DAMAC Hills

Long bus journeys from coastal schools mean a Year 11 student is frequently not settled before 17:00. Working through a marked paper needs concentration, so a 19:00 session after a break produces better chemistry than a 16:30 one on arrival.

Dubai Festival City and Al Garhoud

Central eastern districts with short school runs and dense schooling. Earlier sessions work here, and families often use a 16:30 slot for drilling and a weekend morning for longer paper work, which is a sensible split for this subject.

Mudon, Serena and Dubailand

Interior villa communities where households commonly run two or three subjects at once. The limiting factor is the parent's evening rather than the student's: written feedback after each session matters more where nobody can sit in.

Al Mizhar and Al Twar

Established eastern neighbourhoods feeding several large British-curriculum cohorts. Chemistry classes here tend to be big, which means less individual marking at school and a greater return from having a script read line by line.

Jumeirah and Al Manara

Close to selective schools with heavy internal assessment calendars. Sessions are most useful here when they work on the school's own past-paper assignments rather than introducing a parallel set of materials the student has no time for.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence

Apartment living where the quiet-room problem is real. Headphones, a cleared desk and a fixed slot do more for a chemistry session here than any change of tutor, and families who sort that out first see faster movement.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Short journeys free the late afternoon, which makes this the easiest part of the emirate in which to protect two chemistry sessions a week during a pre-series block without displacing everything else.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Photograph the marked paper

Three pages of your child's most recent marked chemistry is the whole of what is needed to start. Not a description of the problem, not a grade history: the actual script, with the marker's annotations visible. Everything a specialist can say about cause, priority and duration comes from reading that rather than from a conversation about it.

    Free thirty-minute script reading

A 4CH1 specialist goes through the paper with the student, locating lost marks and sorting them by cause. The output is a written statement of the largest category and a realistic view of how long it takes to close. No card details are taken, and families who use that statement themselves have still had the useful part of the hour.

  3. 03

    Fix the notation layer first

Where the diagnosis points at equations, state symbols, charges, units or significant figures, that work comes before any content revision. It is mechanical, it closes in four to six sessions, and it makes every subsequent topic cheaper to learn. Covering content first feels better and delays the thing that was actually costing marks.

  4. 04

    Re-test with questions never seen

A repair is only real if it survives a gap. Unseen questions a fortnight after the block ends, marked against the scheme, show whether the habit has formed. Testing at the end of the same session shows only that the student remembers the last hour, which is the most common way tutoring reports overstate progress.

  5. 05

Track the categories, not the mood

Written feedback after each session names the specification point and the marks at stake, so the count of notation errors or abandoned two-step calculations can be compared week to week. That is reportable. Progress described as pleasing is not, and a parent who was not in the room has no way to check it.

  6. 06

Say so if the match is wrong

Two or three sessions is enough to know. Another 4CH1 specialist picks up the same script reading, the same category counts and the same priority order, so nothing is re-assessed or re-charged. Confirm that in writing with any provider before the first paid hour, because the alternative is paying twice for one diagnosis.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The script comes before the syllabus

A 4CH1 session that starts at the first page of the specification is working blind. Starting at the student's own marked paper locates the lost marks, counts them and puts the biggest pile first, which usually turns out to be notation rather than chemistry and takes weeks rather than terms.

Observation wording taught as wording

Qualitative analysis is marked on exact phrases. A white precipitate scores and a cloudy solution does not, and no amount of chemical understanding closes that gap. Teaching the fixed forms of words is one or two hours and makes those marks available on every paper the student sits.

Four equation forms, drilled separately

Word, symbol, net ionic and half equations have different rules, and students who have practised only balanced symbol equations lose marks across the other three. Separating them and drilling each is a couple of sessions with a return that shows up in electrolysis, salt preparation and precipitation at once.

Presentation marks named out loud

State symbols, charges, units and significant figures are counted and are lost silently, because classroom marking has no time to flag them individually. Required on every line for a few weeks, the whole category closes, and across 180 marks it is often worth a grade boundary.

Honest about what the format does and does not do

Lessons are one to one over live video. IB Gram does not arrange home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE. Where an in-home tutor would genuinely serve a student better, for instance a younger child who will not start work unsupervised, this page says so rather than arguing the other way.

Nothing asserted without a source

Every AED band here is attributed to the provider that published it, every regulatory statement traces to u.ae, KHDA, MoHRE or Pearson, and no claim of approval is made because none is held. No tutor can promise a particular grade, and any provider that does should be asked to put the refund terms on the same page.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

My child's 4CH1 marks dropped and the report says careless. What does that usually mean?+

In chemistry it usually means one of five specific things, and they are separable. Missing state symbols on equations that required them. Omitted units on concentration or mass answers. Two-step calculations abandoned after the first step. Observations described loosely where the scheme wants fixed wording. Equations balanced by altering a formula. None of these is a misunderstanding of chemistry, all of them are counted, and together they commonly account for a grade boundary's worth of marks on a 180-mark paper. A marked script shows which ones apply within about twenty minutes.

How many marks are in Paper 1C and Paper 2C of 4CH1?+

Paper 1C carries 110 marks over two hours and Paper 2C carries 70 marks over one hour fifteen minutes, giving 180 marks in total, so Paper 1C is 61.1% of the subject total and Paper 2C is 38.9%. The entry is untiered, with no Foundation or Higher decision, and the result is reported on the 9 to 1 scale. The specification also identifies content examined only in Paper 2C. Confirm the current structure and that content split on the live specification at qualifications.pearson.com for your child's series.

Why does my child lose marks when the observation is basically right?+

Because qualitative analysis is marked on wording rather than on sense. A sulfate test answered as the solution turns cloudy describes the right event and earns nothing, where a white precipitate forms earns the mark. Limewater turns milky, not white. Ammonia turns damp red litmus blue. A glowing splint relights in oxygen. Each of these is a fixed form of words, and most students have never been told they are fixed. Learning the standard table in standard phrasing is one or two hours and recovers marks on every paper.

What is the most common equation mistake in Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry?+

Balancing by changing a subscript inside a formula. It produces a balanced line and describes a different substance, so it scores nothing, and students do it because it works arithmetically. The second commonest is stopping once the atoms noticed first are balanced, which usually leaves hydrogen or oxygen unbalanced. The third is omitting state symbols where the question required them. All three are mechanical. Fifteen minutes of equation writing at the start of each session, cold and with charges shown, closes the set inside a month.

What is the difference between a symbol equation and an ionic equation in 4CH1?+

A balanced symbol equation shows every substance involved with correct formulae and balanced atoms. A net ionic equation shows only the species that actually change, with the spectator ions removed and the charges and state symbols kept. A half equation shows what happens at one electrode, with the electrons balanced. Students who have practised only the symbol form lose marks on the other two without knowing why, because the rules differ. Drilling the forms separately takes two or three sessions and recovers marks in electrolysis, precipitation and salt preparation at once.

Does a 4CH1 student need to know significant figures?+

Yes, and handling them badly turns correct methods into wrong answers. The convention to teach is to carry full precision through the working and round only at the final line, to the precision of the least precise datum in the question. A student who rounds at every step produces an answer that drifts and can fall outside the range a scheme accepts. It is a mechanical habit, visible in a marked script within three weeks of being required on every line, and it costs nothing to fix.

Does an Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry tutor come to our home in Dubai?+

Not with IB Gram. Chemistry lessons are delivered one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are a service offered only in India. The in-home market in Dubai is real, with rates published at AED 180 to 350 an hour in Bestimate's 2026 table and home tutors advertising to AED 500, since travel sits inside the figure. For script-level chemistry work the shared screen has a specific advantage: the annotated question, the corrected equation and the redrafted answer all survive the session, where notes in an exercise book do not.

How do online lessons handle writing equations and drawing structures?+

On a shared surface both people can write on. The student writes the equation, the tutor corrects it alongside, and the corrected version is saved and sent afterwards. Organic structures, isomers and apparatus diagrams work the same way, and a structure can be redrawn three times in a minute, which is the practice a student needs when the error is in the drawing convention rather than in the chemistry. Every version stays available, so a parent who was not present can see what changed during the hour.

Which purification technique does my child need to know for 4CH1?+

Four, and the order of a salt preparation. Filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid. Crystallisation recovers a soluble solid from its solution. Simple distillation separates a solvent from a dissolved solid. Fractional distillation separates liquids with different boiling points. A salt preparation wants add excess, filter off the unreacted solid, evaporate and crystallise, in that sequence. Students who know the four techniques and that order answer most practical questions on the paper correctly, and the whole set is two to three hours of work.

Is organic chemistry in 4CH1 as hard as it looks?+

It looks harder than it is, because it arrives last and is revised least. The content is pattern-based: alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and carboxylic acids each have a general formula, a naming convention and a short set of reactions, and once the pattern is visible the recall load drops sharply. Addition against substitution, the bromine-water test, oxidation of alcohols, esterification and addition polymerisation form a brief list of named reactions. The real difficulty is calendar rather than conceptual, so pre-teaching the homologous series before the school reaches them pays well.

Can a tutor help if my child joined a Dubai school mid-course?+

Yes, and the gap is usually narrower than it feels. A student arriving into a 4CH1 class from an American, Indian or national-curriculum background generally knows the chemistry and does not know the notation and answer conventions Pearson expects: equation forms, state symbols, observation wording, the shape of an explain answer. Three or four sessions on convention closes most of it. Dubai's private sector ran 17 different curricula across 227 schools in 2024-25, so mid-course transfer is ordinary here rather than exceptional.

How do Arabic and Islamic Education fit around a chemistry revision plan in Dubai?+

They occupy real timetable space and have to be planned around. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, with the advice that no mandatory lesson be shorter than 25 minutes. Families who map the whole weekly load before committing to chemistry hours end up with a plan that survives the term.

Can 4CH1 sessions move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan?+

Yes, and the sensible approach is to agree the alternative slot before the month begins rather than renegotiating during it. Dubai school days shorten in Ramadan and household routines change, so a 17:00 chemistry session frequently stops working and a post-Iftar one works better. Since lessons run over live video on Gulf Standard Time there is no travel to rearrange, which makes the shift straightforward. The same applies in reverse for summer and winter travel, when sessions can follow a family abroad if the time difference allows.

Can a chemistry tutor mark my child's practical write-ups from school?+

Marking and giving feedback on work the student has written is exactly what a tutor is for, and school practical write-ups are useful material because the student has already done the laboratory work. The write-up is opened on a shared screen and marked the way Pearson words practical questions, which converts an afternoon already spent into examination marks. What a tutor must never do is produce assessed work on a student's behalf. 4CH1 carries no coursework, which removes the commonest version of that risk entirely.

Is it worth starting 4CH1 tutoring in Year 9?+

It is the cheapest intervention available in this subject, if the school's Key Stage 4 runs over three years. The skills that decide a 4CH1 grade are largely notational and mathematical: writing formulae from charges, balancing, ratio, standard form, rearranging. A Year 9 student who has those arrives at the specification able to learn chemistry rather than fighting arithmetic. Ask the head of science whether Year 9 is a general science year or already the first year of the course, and ask for the scheme of work while you are there.

How soon should we expect to see the chemistry marks move?+

It depends on which category the script showed. Recall repairs such as the ion tests appear in the next topic test, within two or three weeks. Notation work, meaning state symbols, charges and units, shows up over three to four weeks once it is required on every line. Two-step calculation work takes four to six weeks because the habit has to become automatic. A genuine content gap across a whole section is a term. No tutor can promise a particular grade, and any provider offering one deserves real scepticism.

Send the paper, not the problem

If your child sits Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry 4CH1 at a Dubai school and the last marked paper is hard to interpret, photograph three pages of it and send them. A 4CH1 specialist will read it with your child in a free thirty-minute session, locate every lost mark, sort them into notation, arithmetic, recall, answer structure and genuine content gap, and tell you which pile is biggest and how long it takes to close. No card details are taken. Lessons run one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and if the first tutor is not the right fit another picks up the same script reading.
