Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 Home Tutor in Dubai

Searching for a Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 home tutor in Dubai turns up plenty of listings and very little useful information about permits, timing or what a visit actually buys. This page answers the home-tutoring question properly: who may legally tutor in the UAE, what the school-run clock does to a weekday session, which parts of the syllabus a tutor is genuinely needed for, and why our 0455 teaching happens online instead.

  • The MoHRE permit position explained, with the official application route named
  • Session timing mapped to real Dubai school arrival windows
  • Lessons delivered one-to-one over live video, never as a UAE home visit
  • A written plan and a diagnosis before the second session is booked

Home tutoring for 0455 in Dubai: what the search leaves out

Three things decide whether a home tutor is the right purchase for Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455, and the listings a parent finds rarely mention any of them. The first is legality. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit scheme introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and administered by MoHRE, and a tutor arriving at a Dubai villa for cash without one is operating outside that scheme. The second is the clock: a weekday session in this city is squeezed between a school bus and a bedtime, and a tutor's drive comes out of the same hour you are paying for. The third is fit, because about half of this syllabus is taught perfectly adequately in a decent Dubai classroom and the other half is where help earns its keep.

Our answer on the first point is straightforward. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For UAE families, 0455 is taught as one-to-one live video, scheduled around the Dubai school day, with written work set, marked and returned between sessions. That is a real constraint and we would rather you knew it on the first page than on the fourth call. If a physical presence in the room is your actual requirement, hire locally and ask the questions set out below before you pay anybody.

On the second point, the arithmetic is worth doing once. A tutor travelling from one side of Dubai to another between 17:00 and 19:00 is spending a substantial part of their working hour in a car, and that time is inside your rate whether the invoice says so or not. More importantly it limits what time the session can start, which in a household with two children and a 21:00 bedtime is often the binding constraint rather than money. An online session starts at the booked minute from anywhere.

On the third point, this page is unusually specific. Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 has six units, and Dubai schools are generally strong on the content-heavy ones and weaker on the assessment skills that carry the top marks. Knowing which is which stops you paying for a year of general support when ten weeks of targeted work on evaluation and data response would have done. The unit-by-unit table below is the version of that advice we would give a friend.

The rest of the page covers the permit categories and how a parent can verify them, the emirate-by-emirate regulator map that matters if you move house, how Ramadan and the UAE academic calendar reshape when revision actually happens, and what the first fortnight of a sensible arrangement should produce in writing. None of it requires you to take anything on trust, which is the point.

At a glance

  • The UAE private tuition work permit is issued by MoHRE, free, for two years
  • A cross-city drive at 17:30 comes out of the hour you are paying for
  • 0455 has six units; schools are strongest on the content-heavy ones
  • The top marks sit in evaluation and data response, not in recall
  • IB Gram delivers 0455 as one-to-one online lessons, not UAE home visits
  • Ask the five verification questions before paying any tutor in cash
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four economics qualifications appear in Dubai school prospectuses, and parents are frequently told their child is taking one when the entry says another. Check the specification code on the exam entry rather than the subject name on the report.

Cambridge IGCSE Economics

Two external papers, no coursework. A forty-five minute multiple-choice paper carries 30% of the qualification and a two-hour-fifteen-minute structured paper carries 70%, split between one data-response question and a choice of three structured questions from four. Six units run from scarcity through markets, decision makers, macroeconomic policy, development and international trade.

Dubai schools usually start 0455 at the beginning of Year 10 and finish the content by the February of Year 11, which leaves a revision window that varies enormously between departments. Where a school finishes late, the squeeze lands on exactly the assessment skills that carry the highest marks, and that is where most of our Dubai enquiries originate.

Cambridge O Level Economics

A separate Cambridge qualification with overlapping content, run by some schools instead of the IGCSE. The syllabus territory is similar and the paper structure and question styles are not identical, so revision materials are not interchangeable. Cambridge runs O Level exams in the same June and November series as IGCSE.

Several Dubai schools with large South Asian cohorts run O Level rather than IGCSE, and families moving between schools mid-phase can find the qualification changes under them. If your child transfers in Year 11, ask the new school's exams officer which code the entry will carry before buying any revision material.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB MYP Individuals and Societies

The route students arrive from when they move out of Dubai's large IB sector into a Cambridge school. MYP assesses knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically against criteria A to D, with extended written tasks. It builds research and argument habits and does not build timed exam pacing.

A student transferring from an MYP school into Year 10 or 11 of a Cambridge school in Dubai usually writes better prose than their classmates and runs out of time in exams. The first marked 0455 timed answer tends to show exactly that: a thoughtful, well-argued response to two of the four parts and nothing written for the others.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level and IB Diploma Economics in Dubai sixth forms

A Level extends the micro and macro models substantially and introduces aggregate analysis absent from IGCSE. IB Diploma Economics restructures the content around key concepts and adds an internally assessed portfolio of commentaries written on real news articles, which is the first time most students meet an assessed piece of extended economics writing.

Because Dubai has both systems in strength, families can genuinely choose at 16, and the choice should be made on how the student writes rather than on which school has the better reputation. A student who thrives on timed argument suits A Level; a student who works well over weeks on a portfolio often does better in the Diploma.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the 0455 topics Dubai families ask about most, listed as topics rather than as skills. Against each is the thing that actually goes wrong, which is usually narrower than the topic heading suggests.

Scarcity, choice and opportunity cost

Unit 1

The opening unit, and the one where a sloppy definition costs marks for two years. Opportunity cost is the next best alternative forgone, not the money spent, and a student carrying the loose version into Year 11 loses two-mark openers across the whole paper.

Demand, supply and market equilibrium

Unit 2

The engine of the syllabus. Dubai classrooms teach this well; what goes missing is the discipline of finishing a diagram. A student who can explain a shift verbally and cannot label the new equilibrium is losing marks for presentation rather than understanding.

Price elasticity of demand and supply

Unit 2

The formula is rarely the problem. The problem is the sentence after the number: what an elasticity of 0.4 means for a firm's revenue if it raises price. Students calculate and then stop, and the mark scheme pays for the interpretation.

Market failure and government intervention

Unit 2 and Unit 4

Maximum and minimum prices, indirect taxes and subsidies. The recurring error is treating a subsidy as a demand shift. It moves supply, and a one-minute recall drill fixes it permanently once someone notices it is happening.

Households: income, spending and saving

Unit 3

Decisions about spending, saving and borrowing, and the influences on them. Scripts here often attach correct reasoning to the wrong agent, explaining a firm's incentive where the question asked about a household's, which reads as carelessness and is usually hurried reading.

Wage determination and trade unions

Unit 3

Why wages differ between occupations, and the role of unions. A reliable source of mid-paper marks and one students under-revise because it feels less technical than the diagram units. It is also the easiest unit in which to give specific UAE examples.

Firms: costs, revenue and economies of scale

Unit 3

Fixed and variable costs, total and average figures, revenue, profit, and why size changes unit cost. The arithmetic is simple and the vocabulary is unforgiving: average and total are not interchangeable, and a question asking for one does not credit the other.

Inflation, deflation and the price index

Unit 4

Causes, consequences and measurement. Index interpretation is where numerically capable students stumble, usually by reading an index as a price rather than as a comparison with a base year. Once that is said out loud, it rarely recurs.

Unemployment: types, causes and consequences

Unit 4

Cyclical, structural and frictional unemployment, and the effects on individuals, firms and government. Answers improve sharply when a student can give one consequence for each of those three groups rather than three versions of the same consequence.

Fiscal, monetary and supply-side policy

Unit 4

Instruments, aims and conflicts between objectives. The commonest failure in marked work is naming a policy without tracing what it does: an answer that lists instruments where the question wanted a chain from instrument to outcome.

Development, living standards and indicators

Unit 5

Differences in development between countries, income distribution and population. Marks go to specific comparison, and generalities about rich and poor countries score low where a named indicator and a direction of travel would have scored.

Exchange rates and the balance of payments

Unit 6

Determination, changes and consequences for trade. The classic error is reversing the direction: a depreciating currency makes exports cheaper abroad, and roughly half the scripts we mark get this backwards under time pressure at least once.

Free trade, protection and globalisation

Unit 6

Specialisation, the arguments for and against protection, and the effects of globalisation. A strong unit for evaluation practice because both sides are genuinely arguable, which makes it the one we use most when drilling the eight-mark structure.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats a Dubai household can realistically run for 0455, described by what each one asks of your week rather than by what it costs. We deliver the first.

One weekday online session, one written answer

A single 60-minute live video lesson at a fixed weekday time, with one written answer set afterwards and marked before the next session. For most Dubai households this is the format that survives contact with a real school week, because it needs one slot rather than two and the written work can be done whenever the evening allows.

  • Fixed weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time
  • One marked written answer between sessions
  • No travel, so the start time is yours to choose
  • Rescheduling handled by moving the slot, not cancelling the week

Weekend morning session with a longer written task

For families in the outer communities where weekday arrival times make a useful session impossible. A longer weekend slot allows a full timed Section A or a three-question Section B attempt inside the session, which is closer to exam conditions than any weekday evening can be.

  • Suits Mudon, International City, Dubailand and similar commutes
  • Full timed components attempted under supervision
  • Fewer sessions, more marked output per session
  • Works around Friday and Saturday family commitments

Paired session for two students in the same cohort

Two students sitting the same paper in the same series, sharing one tutor and one rate. In an essay subject this works better than it does in a practical one, because both students can write simultaneously and the discussion of a marked answer benefits from a second opinion in the room.

  • Both students must sit the same board, paper and series
  • Each writes their own answer; both are marked separately
  • Lower cost per student than one-to-one
  • Stops working when the two diverge by more than a grade

01

Can you get a 0455 home tutor in Dubai? The direct answer

Yes, the Dubai market has them, and no, we are not one of them. Independent tutors advertise home visits across the emirate, tuition centres run group classes on their own premises, and some school teachers tutor privately within the rules that apply to them. Published rates for in-home one-to-one tuition in Dubai run from roughly AED 180 to AED 350 in Bestimate's rate table, with independent home tutors advertising up to AED 500, and monthly in-home packages of four two-hour sessions appearing at AED 1,599 to AED 1,799. Those are market figures from those sources rather than our prices.

What a visit buys you is a physical presence: an adult in the room, a child who cannot wander off, and for some families a genuine behavioural benefit that no amount of video can replicate. What it costs you is travel time inside the hour, a tutor pool limited to people willing to drive to your community at the worst time of day, and a later start than you would choose. For a fifteen-year-old sitting 0455, the behavioural benefit is usually small and the constraints are not.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and the India business is the only part of the operation where a tutor travels to a student. We state that here because the alternative is a parent discovering it after three conversations, and because the honest version of the comparison is one we are content to lose sometimes. If supervision is the requirement, a local tutor is the right answer and the questions later on this page are the ones to ask them.

The table below sets the four realistic options side by side on the things that actually differ. It is deliberately not a comparison with named competitors; it compares models, which is the only fair way to do it.

02

What a home visit cannot leave behind

  • A visit leaves teaching and a doorstep conversation
  • A marked script can be read, kept and compared
  • Five countable measures: definitions, links, diagram checks, source use, judgement basis
  • The real question is marked against unmarked, not online against in-home

Set cost aside for a moment, because there is a difference between the two formats that matters more over a school year and almost nobody mentions it. A home visit produces an hour of teaching and a verbal report at the door. An online arrangement, run properly, produces a marked script every week that you can read, keep and compare. In an essay subject that is not a minor administrative difference; it is the only way to tell whether the money is working.

The reason is practical rather than ideological. A tutor who marks at a desk, away from the student, with the published criteria open, writes a different kind of comment from a tutor reading over a shoulder at the kitchen table. The first produces a band and a reason. The second produces encouragement and a suggestion. Both are useful in the moment and only one accumulates into evidence. We have had Dubai parents tell us they liked their previous home tutor a great deal and could not say, after two terms, what had changed in their child's writing.

The things we track for 0455 are all countable from marked scripts: whether two-mark definitions come back full or half, how many links each explanation carries, whether a diagram passed its five objective checks, how many times a Section A answer referred to the supplied source, and whether the eight-mark judgement named a basis or simply asserted one. None of that requires a tutor to be in the room. All of it requires someone to read the script carefully afterwards and write down what they found.

So the comparison a parent should make is not online against in-home. It is marked against unmarked. A home tutor who marks and reports in writing is a good purchase. An online tutor who chats pleasantly for an hour is not. The format only shifts the odds, because marking is easier to build into a process that already runs on shared files.

03

The Dubai school-run clock and what it does to a session

Every tutoring arrangement in this city is eventually decided by a bus timetable. A Dubai school day commonly ends between 14:30 and 15:30, after which a child may be on a bus for anything from fifteen minutes to an hour, and clubs and sport can push arrival home past 17:00. Then homework, dinner and a bedtime that a Year 11 student needs more than they admit. The window for a useful session is narrow, and a tutor's drive eats the front of it.

This is why the home-versus-online question is usually settled by logistics rather than by preference. A family in an outer community choosing a home tutor is choosing a 17:45 or 18:00 start, because that is when the tutor can get there. The same family online can start at 16:45 if the bus allows, which is an hour earlier in a child's day and a noticeably better hour for writing an argument. Where the commute is long in both directions, a weekend morning beats both.

The table gives the windows we actually schedule into. They are generalisations from arranging sessions into these districts and they vary by school and by bus route, so treat them as a starting point for your own calculation rather than as a timetable. The column that matters most is the last one: what can realistically be achieved in a session that starts then. A 19:00 session is not a worse hour because of any principle, but it is a worse hour for writing a timed eight-mark answer, and the work should be chosen to match.

One practical consequence for 0455 specifically. Because the subject improves through marked writing rather than through contact time, a household with a bad weekday window has an easy fix: write the answer at a sensible hour on a different day and use the session purely for the marked review. That reorders the week around the child's best writing hour instead of around the tutor's availability.

Who may legally tutor your child in the UAE, and how to check

This is the part of a home-tutor search that deserves more attention than it gets. Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted and regulated rather than informal. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE. The federal portal u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years, and that eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page describes the route as an application through its smart app, website and e-services system, listing no fee and a two-working-day completion time.

Two conclusions follow for a parent. A tutor who says the permit is expensive, slow or unnecessary is contradicting the official pages, and that is a useful signal about everything else they tell you. And a tutor operating without one is, in the portal's words, subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted at you by anybody, including by us.

There is an additional layer in Abu Dhabi that Dubai parents should know about if they move. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, with the permit's code of conduct reported to bar the same arrangement. That is press-reported rather than read from the policy document itself, so verify it against ADEK's current publication before relying on it. The underlying principle is sound wherever you live: your child's own classroom teacher tutoring them privately for money is an arrangement to approach with care rather than enthusiasm.

A business is a different matter from an individual. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA educational services permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and annual renewal. IB Gram holds no such permit, operates no premises in the UAE, and claims no approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education. Any tutoring page describing itself as regulator-approved is making a specific claim that can be checked, and it is worth checking.

Which 0455 units a tutor is actually needed for

Buying a year of general economics support when ten weeks of targeted work would do is the most common way money is wasted in this subject. Dubai schools are, in our experience of marking their students' work, reliably good at the content-dense units and reliably thin on the assessment skills that separate a middle grade from a strong one. The table maps that honestly, including the units where our answer is that you probably do not need us.

The pattern is consistent enough to be worth stating in advance. Units on markets, decision makers and the macroeconomy are taught thoroughly because they are examinable content with clear notes, and a well-staffed Dubai department covers them. The development unit is more variable, often taught late in Year 11 when time has run short. And the assessment skills, which are not a unit at all, are where almost all the demand sits: the eight-mark judgement, the data-response habit of using the source, diagram completion and multiple-choice pacing.

This has a direct implication for how long you should buy. A student whose problem is skills rather than content does not need weekly support from September to May. They need an intensive block of eight to twelve weeks, run on marked written answers, placed after the content is finished and before the final mocks. That is cheaper than a year, more effective than a panic block in April, and it is the recommendation we make most often to Dubai families who contact us in Year 11.

Where a genuine content gap exists, it is usually one unit and it is usually identifiable from a single marked paper. In that case the work is short and specific: four to six weeks on the unit, then back to skills. A tutor who proposes a comprehensive two-year programme before seeing any of your child's written work is proposing a subscription rather than a diagnosis.

Ramadan, the UAE calendar and when 0455 revision happens

A revision plan built on a European academic calendar does not survive a UAE school year, and the mismatch costs families weeks. The Dubai year runs roughly September to late June or early July, with a long winter break in December, a spring break in the first part of the year, and Ramadan moving earlier each year and bringing shortened school days with it. A plan that assumes twelve uninterrupted weeks before a Cambridge series is usually planning around a month that does not exist.

The practical adjustments are not complicated once you have seen them. During Ramadan, sessions move to post-Iftar timing and concentration windows shorten, so the sensible shape is written work produced earlier in the day with the session spent on marked review. The days immediately after Eid are poor for new content and good for timed practice, because the material is still in place and the appetite for teaching is not. The winter break, counter-intuitively, is the most productive block of the year for an essay subject, because a student can write a full timed paper without a school day on either side of it.

The exam calendar adds its own deadlines months before the papers. Cambridge runs IGCSE and O Level exams in a June series and a November series, and the entry closes long before the window opens in either one. The clearest worked example sits on the Pearson side of the Dubai market, because Pearson publishes its dates in a form firm enough to quote: the International GCSE November 2026 timetable ran through to 19 November 2026, and results from a November series reach students in January, the way the November 2025 results landed with candidates on 22 January 2026. June results come far earlier in the cycle, with the June 2026 grades reaching centres on 19 August 2026 and students the day after. Put those two facts next to each other and the resit arithmetic is uncomfortable: a family that waits for the August result before deciding whether November is worth paying for is deciding while the November entry is already closing.

One administrative detail worth more than it sounds. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Work from the timetable your school issues, not from a version found online.

Who regulates your child's school, and why it matters if you move

Families relocate within the UAE constantly, and the regulator changes with the emirate even when the curriculum does not. Dubai private schools sit with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain sit with the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools there. Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

The practical consequence is larger than parents expect. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, so curriculum approval and not merely inspection sits with the emirate. A family moving from Dubai to Sharjah mid-course may find a school with different arrangements around options and assessment, and the mid-Year-11 transfer is the worst moment to discover that the new school enters a different board for the same subject.

Across all of them, the federal baseline holds: private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. In Dubai, KHDA's mandatory-subject requirements set out separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes prohibited because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ, and instructional time calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit.

None of this is something a tutoring platform administers, and we would not pretend otherwise. It is background a parent needs when a move is on the table, and it is almost entirely absent from the pages competing for this search. The regulator for your emirate is the authority to ask about school licensing and inspection, and the Ministry is the authority on certificate equivalency. We hold no permit, approval or relationship with any of them.

The first fortnight: what a sensible arrangement produces

  • A written diagnosis naming a specific failure, not a topic
  • One marked answer with the band and the reason on it
  • No more than three targets, each observable in a script
  • The rate in AED, plus the cancellation and rescheduling position
  • Clarity in the first fortnight; progress comes later

Two weeks is enough to know whether a tutoring arrangement is going to work, provided you know what to look for. By the end of the second session you should hold four things, and if you do not, the conversation to have is now rather than in April.

The first is a written diagnosis from session one that names a specific failure rather than a topic. "Two-mark definitions coming back half-complete, explanations stopping after one link, diagrams accurate but unlabelled" is a diagnosis. "Needs to build confidence in economics" is not, and a plan cannot be built on it. The second is a marked answer, with the band and the reason written on it, that you have actually seen. The third is a target list of no more than three items, each written as something observable in a script. The fourth is the rate in AED per session, in writing, with the position on cancellation and rescheduling stated.

What you should not expect in the first fortnight is improvement. Early sessions often produce marked work that looks no better than the mock that prompted the call, because the student is being asked to write differently and is still writing the old way. A record showing a jump in week one usually means the task was easier. The honest first fortnight produces clarity about the problem, not progress against it.

If a specialist is not available at the hour you need, we say so rather than putting a generalist in the slot. For 0455 that is uncommon, since economics tutors are easier to schedule than practical-subject specialists, but it happens in the weeks around a series when demand concentrates. The alternatives we offer in that case are a different time, a slightly later start date, or a referral elsewhere. What we do not do is fill the slot and hope.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities and what the clock allows

This is the section a home-tutor search most needs and least often gets: when a session can realistically start where you live. The windows below come from scheduling sessions into these districts, and they are the reason travel matters more than money for most households.

Al Quoz and Al Khail Gate

Central and well connected, with short school runs in most directions. A 16:45 start is realistic, which makes this one of the few areas where two weekday sessions can be placed without pushing into the evening.

Mudon and Serena

Townhouse communities well inland with long bus routes in both directions. Arrival home is often after 16:30 and sometimes later, so a single weekday evening slot plus a weekend morning is the pattern that actually holds.

Damac Hills

Villa district with good study space and reliable connections. Sports and club commitments run late here, so families more often choose 19:00 than 17:00, and a 60-minute session is the sensible maximum at that hour.

The Springs and The Lakes

Established villa communities with short runs to the Emirates Road school belt. Students are usually home by 16:15, which is early enough that a full timed Section A attempt can be written before a session rather than after it.

Jumeirah Beach Residence

High-rise living with short school journeys and shared family study space. Sessions work best before the evening gets busy, and apartment connections handle a shared screen and a digital whiteboard without difficulty.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

Dense older districts near the Sharjah boundary, with a wide spread of curricula and several schools running Cambridge alongside other boards. Enquiries here often involve students taking both Economics and Business Studies.

International City and Warsan

Apartment communities with long commutes to many of the British-curriculum schools. Weekend sessions dominate, and for an essay subject that works well because the written answer can be produced midweek.

Dubailand Residence Complex

Newer apartment clusters inland, where bus routes are long and variable. We schedule later starts here as standard and set shorter written tasks midweek so the session is spent on review rather than drafting.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City and The Villa

A cluster of schools in the inland academic belt, several of them large and recently expanded. Economics is a well-subscribed option here and students often arrive asking for help specifically with the structured paper rather than with content.

  • GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis
  • GEMS FirstPoint School The Villa
  • The Aquila School
  • Vernus International School
  • The Winchester School Dubai

Al Qusais, Al Nahda and Muhaisnah

A mixed-curriculum district where Cambridge qualifications sit alongside Indian and other boards, and where some schools run O Level rather than IGCSE. Checking the specification code on the entry matters more here than almost anywhere else in the emirate.

  • GEMS Westminster School Dubai
  • Dubai Scholars Private School
  • Apple International School
  • Al Diyafah High School
  • The Millennium School Dubai

Motor City, Mira and Arabian Ranches

Inland villa-belt schools serving families with long commutes, where club and sport schedules shape the evening. Students from this cluster commonly want one weekday session and one weekend morning rather than two weekday slots.

  • GEMS Metropole School Motor City
  • Dubai British School Mira
  • Ranches Primary School
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches
  • GEMS Metropole School Al Waha

School names are used to describe the Dubai market this page covers and nothing more; IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the paper and the series

Say which board and specification code the entry carries, which series your child sits, and which part of the paper went wrong. A parent who writes "0455, Section B part (d), June series" gets a sharper match than one who asks for an economics tutor, and gets it faster.

  2. 02

Send a marked mock if you have one

One real script with the school's marking on it is worth more than a long conversation about the difficulty. It usually identifies whether the issue is content or writing within ten minutes, and that distinction determines the entire plan rather than only the first session.

  3. 03

A diagnostic session before any payment

The student writes one short answer under time while the tutor watches the drafting, then the answer is levelled and the level explained. You receive the diagnosis in writing within a day, with a recommended block length and the rate in AED per session attached to it.

  4. 04

Agree the slot against your real arrival time

We set the session against when your child is actually home and able to write, not against a nominal after-school hour. For outer communities that often means a weekend morning, and for an essay subject a weekend morning is frequently the better slot anyway.

  5. 05

Weekly marked answers, reviewed every four weeks

One written answer set and marked each week, with the band and reason recorded. Every fourth session is a review of the accumulated scripts, at which the decision is to continue, change the approach or stop. Stopping is a legitimate outcome of that review.

  6. 06

Say so if the match is wrong

Tell us after the second session rather than after the mocks. Changing tutor in week two costs one session. Tolerating a poor match until February costs a term, and the term is the part that cannot be bought back at any rate.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The delivery limit is stated up front

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE, and this page says so in its first screen rather than after three phone calls. If a physical presence in the room is your requirement, hiring locally is the right answer and the verification questions here are the ones to ask.

The permit position is explained, not glossed

The private tuition work permit, who may apply, that it is free for two years, the official MoHRE application route, and the fact that no fine schedule is published. Most pages competing for this search do not mention licensing at all, and one ranks largely because it does.

Session timing is planned against real arrival windows

We schedule against when your child is actually home and able to think, which for outer Dubai communities often means a weekend morning. A tutor's drive is not in the way, so the hour can be chosen for the student rather than for the traffic.

We tell you which units you do not need us for

Dubai schools teach the content-dense 0455 units thoroughly. The demand is nearly all in assessment skills, which is why the usual honest recommendation is an eight to twelve week block rather than a two-year programme.

Every session leaves a marked script

A band, the reason for it, the diagram checks, the explanation-link count and the source-reference count. You can read a term of scripts in ten minutes. A doorstep conversation after each visit accumulates into nothing you can audit.

No regulator claims, no supplied answers

No approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry is held or implied, no UAE premises are operated, Cambridge materials are linked rather than redistributed, and no answers are supplied for a student to reproduce.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Can I get a home tutor for Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 in Dubai?+

The Dubai market has them: independent tutors advertise home visits across the emirate, and published rates for in-home one-to-one tuition run from around AED 180 to AED 350 in Bestimate's rate table, with some independent tutors advertising up to AED 500. Those figures come from those sources rather than from us. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, because home visits are a service we run only in India. Our UAE teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. If an adult physically in the room is your actual requirement, hire locally and ask for sight of the tutor's MoHRE permit first.

Does a 0455 home tutor cost more than an online one in Dubai?+

Generally yes, and the reason is travel rather than quality. Published in-home bands sit above published online bands in every Dubai rate source we have read, and monthly in-home packages of four two-hour sessions appear at AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 against roughly AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. Beyond the rate, a drive across the city at 17:30 is also time inside the hour you booked, and it pushes the start later than most households would choose. The quieter cost is the tutor pool: a visit limits you to specialists willing to drive to your community at the worst hour of the day.

Does my child's 0455 tutor need a permit, and how do I check?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued through MoHRE. The federal portal states it is granted free of charge for two years and lists eligible applicants including school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Ask to see it. Since the permit costs nothing and MoHRE's service page gives a two-working-day completion time, a tutor without one has a weak explanation available. Those operating without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so treat quoted amounts as unverified.

How late can a 0455 session realistically start on a Dubai school night?+

It depends on your bus route more than on anything else. Central apartment districts with short runs are often home by 15:30, which makes a 16:30 start workable and allows a full timed Section A attempt inside the session. Established villa communities near the school belt tend to manage 17:00. Outer townhouse communities with long routes are realistic from 17:45 or later, and where clubs or sport run late, 19:00 is common. A 19:00 session is fine for teaching and discussion and poor for timed writing, so we match the work to the hour rather than pretending the hour does not matter.

Which 0455 units do Dubai schools usually cover well without extra help?+

In our experience marking their students' work, the content-dense units: the basic economic problem, allocation of resources, microeconomic decision makers and the macroeconomy are taught thoroughly by a well-staffed department, because they are examinable content with clear notes. Economic development is more variable and is often reached late in Year 11. Where almost all demand actually sits is in assessment skills that are not a unit at all: the eight-mark judgement structure, the habit of using the source in Section A, finishing diagrams, and multiple-choice pacing. That is why the honest recommendation is usually a block of eight to twelve weeks rather than two years of weekly support.

How do 0455 lessons work during Ramadan in Dubai?+

Sessions move to post-Iftar timing, and the shape of the work changes rather than just the clock. Concentration windows are shorter, so written answers are produced earlier in the day and the session is spent on marked review instead of drafting. Dubai school days are shortened during Ramadan, which frees afternoon time that is often better for writing than a late evening is. The days immediately after Eid suit timed practice rather than new content, because the material is still in place. We plan the block around this from the start, since a revision plan that assumes an uninterrupted term is planning around weeks that do not exist.

We may move from Dubai to Sharjah mid-0455. Does the regulator change?+

Yes. Dubai private schools sit with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority; Sharjah's are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority. The difference is more than a name: Sharjah's authority approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, so curriculum approval and not only inspection sits with the emirate. In practice the thing to check on arrival is which board and specification code the new school enters candidates for, because a change from Cambridge to another board mid-Year-11 changes the paper structure your child has been practising even where the content overlaps. Ask the new school's exams officer in writing before the transfer completes.

Can my child's own school teacher tutor them privately for 0455 in the UAE?+

Approach it carefully. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct is reported to bar the same arrangement. Those reports should be verified against the current policy documents rather than taken as exact wording. Beyond the rules, there is a plain conflict of interest in paying the person who sets and marks your child's internal assessments. A tutor with no connection to the school gives a genuinely independent read on the work, which is part of what you are buying.

What should the first fortnight of 0455 tuition actually produce?+

Four things, all of them documents. A written diagnosis from the first session naming a specific failure rather than a topic. One marked answer with the band and the reason written on it, which you have seen. A target list of no more than three items, each phrased as something observable in a script. And the rate in AED per session in writing, with the cancellation and rescheduling position stated. What you should not expect is improvement: early marked work often looks no better than the mock that prompted the call, because the student is being asked to write differently and is still partly writing the old way.

Is Cambridge O Level Economics 2281 the same qualification as IGCSE 0455?+

No, although the content territory overlaps substantially. They are separate Cambridge qualifications with different paper structures and question styles, which means revision materials and past papers are not interchangeable. Some Dubai schools run the O Level rather than the IGCSE, and a family moving between schools mid-phase can find the qualification changes under them without anybody mentioning it. The check is simple and worth making: ask the exams officer which code appears on your child's entry, then buy materials and practise papers for that code only. A student practising the wrong board's papers is rehearsing the right economics in the wrong format.

Can two siblings or classmates share a 0455 session in Dubai?+

Yes, and economics suits pairing better than a practical subject does, because both students can write at the same time and a marked answer benefits from two people arguing about why it sits in the band it does. The conditions are that both sit the same board, the same paper and the same series, and that they are within about a grade of each other. Each writes their own answer and each is marked separately, so the marking workload does not halve even though the rate is shared. The arrangement stops working the moment one student is being taught while the other waits, and we would say so rather than continue it.

What happens if no 0455 specialist is free when we need a session?+

We say so, offer a different time or a later start, or point you elsewhere. For economics this is uncommon, since the subject is easier to staff than practical ones, but availability tightens in the weeks around a series when every family in the Gulf wants the same two hours on a weekday evening. What we will not do is put a generalist into a specialist slot and let you discover the difference in week four. If you are planning around a February or June series, agreeing the slot in advance is the single most useful thing you can do, and it costs nothing.

Do we need to buy 0455 textbooks or past papers before starting?+

Not before a diagnostic session. The endorsed textbook your school uses is usually enough, and past papers are published by Cambridge on cambridgeinternational.org, which is where they should come from. We do not supply or reproduce Cambridge syllabuses, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, because they are Cambridge's material and redistributing them is not ours to do. We link to the official source and work from what your school has issued. If a specific resource would genuinely help after the diagnosis, the tutor will name it and you can decide whether to buy it.

How do we move a 0455 session when school changes the mock dates?+

Tell us and the slot moves; nothing is lost. Because there is no travel to arrange, rescheduling an online session is a calendar change rather than a logistical one, which matters in a Dubai school year where mock weeks, inspection weeks and shortened Ramadan days all move things around. Our practice is to shift the session within the same week where possible rather than cancel it, since the marked written answer is the part that carries the learning and skipping a week breaks the rhythm. The cancellation and rescheduling position is stated in writing before the first paid session.

Will a 0455 tutor speak to my child's school?+

Only if you ask and the school agrees, and it is rarely necessary. What is useful is the school's own material: the mock paper with its marking, the department's revision schedule, and the mock and internal deadline dates so the tuition plan lines up with them rather than competing. A tutor working from those documents is effectively coordinated with the school without anybody needing a meeting. Where a school has given specific written feedback, send it; it tells us what the department is emphasising, and marking against the same criteria the student is hearing in class avoids giving them two conflicting accounts of a good answer.

Ask the permit question first, then the price

If you are about to hire a home tutor for 0455 anywhere in Dubai, the first question is not the rate. It is whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is free, valid for two years and takes about two working days to obtain, so a tutor without one owes you an explanation. After that, ask what gets marked and what you will be able to read at the end of a month. Our own answer to the home-visit question is that we do not make them in the UAE and teach 0455 online instead, on Gulf Standard Time, with a marked script every week. If that is not what you need, the questions above still are.
