IB Home Tutor in Al Yahar

Parents looking for an IB home tutor in Al Yahar are usually asking something more specific than the search box allows: is there anyone within reach who genuinely knows the Diploma, rather than the subject in general. This page answers it with evidence rather than assurance. It names the Internal Assessment criteria a real IB tutor can recite, the word limits they should know, and exactly which subjects we can and cannot cover from Al Yahar. Lessons are one-to-one over live video.

  • Internal Assessment criteria named by letter, so you can test any tutor
  • Subject coverage published, including the subjects we decline
  • Live one-to-one video; IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE

IB & IGCSE in Al Yahar

Is there a real IB specialist within reach of Al Yahar?

The honest answer splits by subject. For Mathematics, Biology, Economics, Business Management and English there are competent Diploma teachers reachable from Al Yahar, in home or online. For Chemistry at Higher Level, Physics at Higher Level, Spanish B or French B, the drivable pool from an outlying agricultural district on the edge of Al Ain is close to empty, and searching harder will not populate it. That is a structural fact about the city, not a sales line.

Al Ain's private-school set is considerably smaller than Abu Dhabi island's, which is the root of it. Fewer schools means fewer Diploma teachers, and the subjects a smaller school set offers thinly are exactly the ones where a student most needs a specialist. Al Yahar sits well away from the main school cluster, so a visiting tutor's journey is long and unpaid, which shrinks the willing pool further.

The deeper problem is that 'knows the IB' is not a checkable claim as usually stated. Almost anyone who has taught a British or American curriculum will say they can support a Diploma student, and for a Standard Level subject taught well that may be true. At Higher Level, and for anything involving the Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge, it very often is not, and parents have no obvious way to tell.

So this page supplies a test rather than a promise. An Internal Assessment is marked against criteria identified by letter, with published mark allocations, and the letters differ by subject group. A teacher who has taken Diploma cohorts through assessment can name them without looking. A teacher who has not will talk about the Internal Assessment in general terms, pleasantly and vaguely. One question settles it in about fifteen seconds, and you can ask it of anyone.

Al Yahar is in Al Ain, part of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, so the regulator is ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK is named by none of the competitor pages reviewed for this project. Its own listing is where to confirm whether a school is licensed to deliver the Diploma at all, which is a reasonable first check when a family is new to the area.

IB Gram's position is deliberately plain. We teach Al Yahar students one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, matched by subject and level. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service we run only in India. Where we cannot cover a subject at the level required, we say so before any booking and give a date or decline, because a concealed gap costs a family a term and a stated one costs them nothing.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Specialist knowledge means different things at different points in the continuum, and the gap between a generalist and a Diploma specialist widens sharply as a student moves up. These are the stages Al Yahar families ask about.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. This is where subject expertise becomes non-negotiable: each subject has its own paper structure, its own weightings and its own Internal Assessment criteria, and a tutor who does not know those is guessing about where the marks are. Higher Level is not Standard Level with extra content; the assessment emphasis differs.

For an Al Yahar family the Diploma is where the local pool runs out first. Higher Level sciences and the less commonly taught languages are thin across the whole of Al Ain because the private-school set is small, and an outlying address compounds it. The practical answer is to stop treating distance as a selection criterion: fix the subject and level first and negotiate the slot afterwards, which is the only order that produces a specialist.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria marked out of eight, with an ePortfolio and the Personal Project in the final year. Here the specialist knowledge that matters is about criteria rather than content: parents see levels rather than percentages, and a tutor's first job is to say which criterion is losing marks and what a level 7 response looks like in that subject.

Middle Years support is more widely available in Al Ain than Diploma support, because the content sits within reach of any strong subject teacher. That makes it the stage where an Al Yahar family can realistically hire locally if they prefer. It is also the cheapest stage at which to fix a gap, and a fortnightly session in Years 9 and 10 prevents the Diploma rescue that this area struggles to staff.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary units of inquiry with the Exhibition in the final year and no external assessment. The useful support is narrow and mechanical: number fluency, reading stamina, written structure. Programme-specific expertise matters least here, which is worth saying plainly rather than selling expertise that adds nothing.

Primary families in Al Yahar have the widest choice of anyone on this page, because the teaching required is not Diploma-specific. The honest advice is to buy less and buy narrowly: two short sessions a week on one named skill, rather than a general weekly hour. The summer before Year 7 is the best-placed block, since once a child commutes to a senior school the week has far less room in it.

CoreDiploma year one into year two

Internal Assessment, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge

This is the single clearest test of whether a tutor knows the Diploma. Each piece is marked against named criteria with published mark allocations and a word or page limit, and the decisive error is a methodology or research question chosen before anyone checked it could support the required analysis. Support means reading, questioning and feedback on the student's own work.

The coursework strand is also where the market behaves worst. One operation found in the research for this project sells completed Internal Assessments to UAE students at around AED 3,750. That is an academic-honesty breach that can cost the whole Diploma, and it appears in the same search results as legitimate tutoring. An Al Yahar family should be able to tell the two apart, and the criteria table on this page is how.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below names what a genuine Diploma specialist in it would be able to discuss on a first call. If a tutor cannot, that tells you which band of the market you are in.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

A specialist can explain how Higher Level Paper 3 differs in demand from Papers 1 and 2, and can name the Internal Assessment criteria including the weight carried by personal engagement and mathematical communication. Well supplied, so there is no reason to accept vagueness in this subject.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

A specialist knows which university routes expect Analysis and Approaches instead, and can say what the graphical calculator is required for rather than merely allowed. Route choice has to be settled in Year 11, and a tutor who cannot discuss it is not advising, only teaching.

Chemistry

HL and SL

A specialist can name the four Internal Assessment criteria for a Group 4 science and their mark allocations, and can say where Higher Level adds assessment demand rather than only content. Among the scarcest Higher Level subjects in Al Ain's pool and the first to book out.

Physics

HL and SL

A specialist talks immediately about uncertainty propagation and significant figures, because that is where easy marks are lost across the whole paper set. Also thin locally at Higher Level, so expect a wait rather than instant availability from an outlying address.

Biology

HL and SL

A specialist can distinguish what 'outline', 'explain' and 'discuss' require and name the marks each typically carries. Content knowledge is common; command-term discipline is the specialist part, and it is what changes a 5 into a 7.

Economics

HL and SL

A specialist can name the Internal Assessment criteria for the commentaries, including the one that rewards use of a key concept, and knows the word limit per commentary. Diagram accuracy and evaluation structure are the two things worth buying hours for.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

A specialist can describe what the Individual Oral is assessed on, including the requirement to anchor it in a global issue, and knows the Higher Level essay's place in the scheme. The Oral is coached rather than taught and suits video delivery particularly well.

Business Management

HL and SL

A specialist knows the difference between the Standard Level and Higher Level internally assessed work and can say what a research project needs to be viable. Students describe organisations where the criteria reward application, and that correction transfers across the paper.

Spanish B and French B

HL and SL

A specialist can explain how the productive and receptive components are weighted and what the individual oral assessment actually requires. These are the least commonly taught languages in Al Ain's school set, so availability is the binding constraint rather than price.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

A specialist knows the essay's 1,600-word maximum, the prescribed-title requirement and how the exhibition differs in what it rewards. A small number of hours on how a knowledge claim is structured changes the grade, and a tutor who offers more than that is padding.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, distinguished by how much Diploma-specific expertise each actually requires. The honest point is that not every need requires a specialist, and paying for one unnecessarily is its own waste.

Subject specialist, one-to-one

A teacher of that subject at that level, matched on assessment knowledge rather than general ability, working from the student's own marked papers. This is what Higher Level subjects and anything involving the Internal Assessment require, and it is the thing an outlying Al Yahar address makes hardest to find locally.

  • Can name the Internal Assessment criteria for the subject on request
  • Works from the student's marked papers rather than a generic scheme
  • Fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, with written notes after each session
  • Matched on subject and level first, slot negotiated second

Coursework supervision block

Four to six concentrated sessions on an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge essay, front-loaded onto methodology and research question. Requires the most specific expertise of anything on this page, because the criteria and limits are subject-specific and the decisive errors happen before any writing.

  • Built around the school's own internal deadline list
  • Reading, questioning and written feedback on the student's own drafts
  • No writing, redrafting to completion or supplied material of any kind
  • Ends at submission, with no rolling continuation

Study-habit and organisation support

The format that needs the least Diploma-specific knowledge and is most often over-sold. A student who understands the material but cannot plan a week, start work without prompting or keep track of deadlines needs structure, not a Higher Level specialist, and should not be paying specialist rates for it.

  • Weekly check-in on deadlines, planning and independent work
  • Suitable for a capable student with an organisation problem
  • Can be covered at the lower end of the market band
  • Worth separating explicitly from subject teaching

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Yahar

01

The criteria a real IB tutor can name

Here is the test. An Internal Assessment is marked against criteria identified by letter with published mark allocations, and those letters differ by subject group. A teacher who has taken Diploma cohorts through assessment can name them for their own subject without looking anything up. A teacher who has not will describe the Internal Assessment in general terms. Ask the question on the first call, before any money moves.

The table below sets out the criteria for the subject groups Al Yahar families most often ask about. It is deliberately specific because none of the competitor pages reviewed for this project names a single Internal Assessment criterion anywhere, which means a parent currently has no way to check the one claim that matters most.

Two things follow from reading it. First, the criteria tell you where tutoring hours should go: for a Group 4 science, evaluation and conclusion are routinely the weakest-scoring criteria and they are also the most teachable, which makes them the obvious target. Second, they show why generic 'IB help' is not useful: a tutor who does not know that personal engagement carries marks in a Mathematics Internal Assessment cannot advise on one.

A caution on how to use this. The criteria are the IB's and are published in the subject guides; this page names them and their allocations rather than reproducing the guides, because reproducing board documents is a copyright problem. Ask your child's subject teacher or Diploma coordinator for the current guide, and verify any detail against it rather than against a tutoring site.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT CRITERIA BY SUBJECT GROUP
SubjectCriteria by letterTotal marksWhere students usually lose them
Group 4 sciences: Biology, Chemistry, PhysicsA research design, B data analysis, C conclusion, D evaluation24, six per criterionEvaluation and conclusion, which are the most teachable
Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or ApplicationsA presentation, B mathematical communication, C personal engagement, D reflection, E use of mathematics20Reflection and personal engagement, which students treat as decoration
EconomicsA diagrams, B terminology, C application and analysis, D key concept, E evaluation14 per commentaryDiagram accuracy and the key concept, both easily fixed
Theory of Knowledge essayA single global assessment against the prescribed titleMarked holisticallyFailing to answer the title as set
Extended EssayA focus and method, B knowledge and understanding, C critical thinking, D presentation, E engagement34Critical thinking, by a wide margin
02

Word and page limits, as a reference a parent can hold

The second test is simpler and almost as effective. Every assessed written component in the Diploma has a limit, and those limits are hard: work beyond them is penalised or not read. A tutor who does not know the limit for the piece they are supposedly supervising has not supervised one recently.

The limits also carry planning information that families find useful in their own right. A 4,000-word Extended Essay is a different project from a 1,600-word Theory of Knowledge essay, and an 800-word Economics commentary is a different discipline again: with that few words, every sentence has to earn a criterion mark. Students who write long and then cut tend to lose the structural marks rather than the surplus prose.

None of the pages reviewed for this project publishes these limits as a reference table, which is a small gap with an outsized practical value. Pin it up. A student who knows the limit before starting plans differently, and a parent who knows it can ask a useful question about a draft without needing to understand the subject.

As with the criteria, these are the IB's requirements and should be verified against the current subject guide or with the school's Diploma coordinator, because the IB revises specifications on its own cycle. This page names the limits; it does not reproduce board documents, and no tutoring provider should be offering those as downloads.

One practical use for the limits beyond hiring. Ask your child how many words they have left for the evaluation or reflection section before they start writing it. If the answer is a few hundred, the piece has already been planned badly, and that is a conversation worth having three weeks early rather than three days late.

03

Subject by subject, what we can cover from Al Yahar

Availability transparency is absent from every competitor page reviewed for this project, so here is ours stated as a constraint rather than a feature. In-home coverage is zero in every row, because IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE. What the table gives is our online coverage, the typical time to match and what happens when we cannot.

The pattern reflects Al Ain's school set rather than anything about Al Yahar. Mathematics, Biology, Economics, Business Management and English are taught by every Diploma school, so the teaching population is large and matching is quick. Higher Level Chemistry and Physics are tighter. Spanish B and French B are thin, and often declined outright.

When a request cannot be filled we offer one of three things: a different slot, a named start date a fortnight or so out when a tutor finishes another commitment, or a straight decline. We do not substitute across subjects or levels. A general science tutor filling a Chemistry Higher Level request looks like a solution for about a month and then costs a term, and that substitution is the most common concealed failure in this market.

Ask the same questions of any provider, including a local in-home tutor. Can you cover this subject at this level, in this slot, starting when; what happens if the first tutor is not right; and can the tutor name the Internal Assessment criteria for the subject. Three specific answers make a provider comparable. An unqualified yes to everything, from a city with a school set this size, is not an answer.

Higher Level is not Standard Level with extra pages

A tutor who treats Higher Level as Standard Level plus content will teach well and leave marks on the table, because the two differ in assessment emphasis as well as in syllabus. This is the second most useful question to put to a prospective tutor after the criteria question, and the answer is diagnostic.

At Higher Level the additional paper or extended components reward sustained reasoning across a longer problem rather than recall of more material. A student who is secure on Standard Level content can still be unprepared for the demand of an extended-response question that requires three linked steps, and that is a technique gap rather than a knowledge gap.

The practical consequence for an Al Yahar family is about where hours go. A Higher Level student with a content gap and a technique gap should spend the early hours on content and the later ones on extended-response practice, in that order, because technique work needs something to be applied to. Reversing the order is the common error and it wastes most of the technique sessions.

The level question also affects who is worth hiring. For Standard Level subjects, a strong general subject teacher with some Diploma familiarity will often do well, and for an outlying area that widens the local options considerably. For Higher Level, particularly in the sciences, it does not, and this is where the city's thin supply starts to matter.

There is one more consequence worth naming. A student who drops from Higher to Standard Level mid-course does not simply shed content; they change the paper they are practising for, and practice done on the wrong component is close to worthless. Any level change should be followed immediately by a change in what the tutoring hours are aimed at.

05

What a tutor may and may not do with Diploma coursework

The criteria table above is also the clearest way to explain the boundary, because the criteria describe what the student must demonstrate. A tutor who supplies any of it has not helped; they have substituted themselves for the candidate, and the IB's academic-honesty framework treats that as grounds for withholding the Diploma.

Inside the boundary, and genuinely valuable: explaining what a criterion rewards, questioning whether a method can support the analysis the criteria demand, pointing out where a conclusion does not follow from the data, identifying missing evaluation, teaching citation properly, and marking the student's own draft against the published criteria. That is teaching, it raises marks, and it is bought at ordinary hourly rates.

Outside the boundary: writing any sentence that goes into the submission, rewriting a paragraph rather than commenting on it, supplying a research question or dataset as finished work, or editing to completion. The research behind this page found an operation selling completed Internal Assessments to UAE students at around AED 3,750, which is both the worst value and the largest risk available in this market.

There is a related line about materials. We will not reproduce or supply IB syllabus documents, subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads. The correct route is to cite the official page and link to it, and a provider advertising a library of board material is telling you something about its approach to everything else.

One final point about how to raise this with a tutor. Ask the question as a scenario rather than as an accusation: what would you do if my child brought you a draft the night before the deadline. The answer separates providers instantly and without any awkwardness, and it is the single most informative question on this page.

06

Checking a tutor is permitted to teach in the UAE

  • Ask which MoHRE permit category the tutor holds and when it was issued
  • The permit is free and lasts two years, so it never justifies a premium
  • No published fine schedule exists; quoted penalty figures are unverified
  • Your child's own school teacher cannot take them privately for payment
  • Examiner status should never be claimed without current evidence

Subject expertise is one check and legal standing is the other, and the second is quicker. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years.

Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. The route is MoHRE's own 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing' service, through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, with a stated two-working-day completion time and no listed fee.

Because Al Yahar is in Abu Dhabi emirate, one further restriction applies. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. A tutor whose pitch rests on teaching at your child's school is offering an arrangement to decline.

Those tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published fine schedule, so any amount quoted is unverified. And for the avoidance of doubt: IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB or Cambridge International, and no individual should be described as an IB examiner without current, evidenced status.

07

Why Al Ain's supply is thin, and what that means for you

It is worth understanding the cause rather than treating it as bad luck. Al Ain's private-school set is considerably smaller than Abu Dhabi island's, and a Diploma teaching population is a function of how many schools deliver the programme. Fewer Diploma schools means fewer Higher Level science groups, which means fewer teachers who have taken a cohort through to examination in those subjects.

The same logic explains the languages. A school offering Spanish B may run it with a single teacher, and a city with few such schools therefore has very few people who have taught the course to assessment. That is not a quality judgement about anyone; it is a headcount, and no amount of local searching changes a headcount.

For an Al Yahar family the consequence is practical. Book the scarce subjects early, in the autumn term of Year 13 at the latest, and expect a wait rather than instant availability. Treat the plentiful subjects as genuinely plentiful, which means refusing both a premium rate and a long wait for Mathematics or Biology.

And be willing to widen the slot rather than the search area. Widening the search area in Al Ain adds almost nobody. Offering a weekend morning or an earlier Friday slot adds a materially larger number of specialists, because availability is distributed by time rather than by geography once nobody has to drive.

The encouraging half of the picture is that supply in the plentiful subjects is genuinely plentiful. Mathematics in both routes, Biology, Economics, Business Management and English are taught in every Diploma school in the emirate, so an Al Yahar family should expect a match inside a week and should refuse both a premium rate and a long wait in those subjects.

08

What a first conversation should actually cover

  • Subject, level, recency and number of cohorts taught
  • Internal Assessment criteria by letter, with mark allocations
  • What is set between sessions, and whether it is marked
  • The review point, and what happens if the plan is not working
  • A marked paper on the table before any plan is quoted

Collect the three answers before any payment, in whatever order suits the conversation. Which subject and level have you taught, how recently, and for how many cohorts. Can you name the Internal Assessment criteria for that subject and their mark allocations. What will you set between sessions, and will you mark it.

The answers sort providers reliably. A Diploma specialist gives paper numbers, criterion letters and a recurring error pattern they have seen in their own students' scripts. A capable generalist gives warm, plausible answers about experience and confidence, which is a fair product at the lower end of the market and is not worth specialist money. Neither is dishonest; they are different purchases.

Add a fourth question if the student is in Year 13: what is the review point, and what happens if this is not working. An answer involving a session count and a willingness to change tutor is a provider with a plan. An answer involving more hours is a provider with a subscription, and for a family in an area with limited alternatives that distinction matters more than usual.

Finally, bring a marked paper to the first conversation. It converts a vague worry into a diagnosis, and it lets a genuine specialist show their expertise in two minutes rather than claim it in ten. Any tutor who does not want to look at marked work before quoting a plan is quoting a plan they have not thought about.

Where we tutor

Al Yahar and the rest of Al Ain

Listed with the one thing that actually varies for an outlying family: how plausible an in-home arrangement is, and therefore how much the specialist question depends on delivery format.

Zakher

The southern edge towards the Omani border, with a comparable distance problem. Both areas face the same arithmetic: a long unpaid journey for any visiting tutor, and almost no specialist willing to make it weekly.

Al Maqam

Southern and spread out, somewhat closer in. In-home arrangements are possible here but late, and the specialist question is the same because supply is citywide rather than local.

Al Khabisi

Central with short runs, so in-home is genuinely practical. Same pool of Diploma specialists, so the choice is wider on logistics and identical on expertise.

Al Mutaredh

Beside the central school cluster. The only part of the city where a weekday in-home session at a sensible hour is routinely achievable.

Al Jimi

Dense and long-established near the souk and hospital. Moderate journeys, with the useful slots pushed later by household working patterns rather than by distance.

Al Muwaiji

Central and residential, minutes from several older private schools. Families here are most likely to know which Diploma subjects their school actually offers.

Hili

North of the centre towards the Oman road, the northern equivalent of Al Yahar's distance. Identical conclusion about specialist availability.

Al Towayya

Villa housing with a strong Diploma cohort and the city's heaviest demand for Higher Level sciences, which is also its thinnest supply.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Yahar

Schools serving Al Yahar and the western districts

Al Yahar students travel to the main Al Ain clusters, and not every school in the city is licensed to deliver the Diploma. Confirm programmes and the latest inspection outcome on ADEK's own listing rather than a prospectus, particularly if you are new to the emirate.

  • Emirates National School - Al Ain
  • Brighton College Al Ain
  • Liwa International School Al Ain
  • Al Ain Academy

Central Al Ain schools, a long run from Al Yahar

The central cluster takes a share of Al Yahar's cohort. For these students the journey is long enough that the format of tutoring is decided by logistics before anyone discusses subject expertise, which is the wrong order and the reason this page exists.

  • Al Ain English Speaking School
  • Our Own English High School - Al Ain
  • Al Ain Juniors School
  • The Model Private School - Al Ain
  • Al Dhafra Private Schools - Al Ain

Schools are named purely as context for Al Ain's education ecosystem; IB Gram claims no affiliation with, endorsement from or commercial relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject and the level

Not 'IB help' but 'Chemistry Higher Level, losing marks on the data-based paper and about to start the Internal Assessment'. The level matters as much as the subject, because Higher Level in the sciences is where Al Ain's supply runs thin and where a general subject teacher is most visibly not enough.

  2. 02

    Send a marked paper

It converts a worry into a diagnosis and lets a real specialist demonstrate expertise rather than assert it. We sort losses into blanks, method errors, timing failures and mark-scheme phrasing, because each has a different fix and a different duration, and a report grade cannot make that distinction.

  3. 03

Use the criteria question on the tutor we propose

The free trial is a full session with the person who would teach the course, no card required. Ask them to name your subject's Internal Assessment criteria and mark allocations. If the answer is vague, tell us and we match again. The test works on any tutor, including ones you find yourself.

  4. 04

Accept a date if the subject is scarce

For Chemistry or Physics at Higher Level, or a second language, we will often give a start date a fortnight out rather than an immediate slot. That is the honest version of availability. We will not fill the gap with a general tutor to keep a booking alive, because that costs a term.

  5. 05

    Review against the original weakness

At the agreed session count, check whether the thing you bought the plan to fix has closed. Closed means stop or move to the next named component. Not closed means change the approach or the tutor rather than adding hours, which is how a plan stays finite.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A test you can apply to anyone

This page publishes the Internal Assessment criteria by letter and the word limits by component so that a parent can check the one claim that matters. None of the competitor pages reviewed for this project names a single criterion anywhere.

Coverage published, including the declines

Chemistry and Physics at Higher Level are limited and the less common languages are thin, so we give a date or decline rather than substituting. An Al Yahar family loses nothing from a stated gap and a term from a concealed one.

Matched on subject and level before slot

Geography is not a selection criterion, which matters most in an outlying area where the drivable pool is nearly empty. Fix the specialism first and negotiate the time second; that is the only order that produces a specialist.

One-to-one live video on Gulf Standard Time, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE because that service exists only in India. On the in-home axis we are the wrong choice and we say so before any booking.

Honest about where expertise is not needed

Primary Years support and study-habit work do not require a Diploma specialist, and we say so rather than selling expertise that adds nothing. Paying specialist rates for an organisation problem is its own kind of waste.

No claimed approvals or examiner titles

No accreditation or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB or Cambridge, no individual described as an examiner without current evidenced status, and no statistic without a source and a date.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Yahar: your questions answered

How can I tell whether a tutor near Al Yahar really knows the IB?+

Ask them to name the Internal Assessment criteria for your child's subject and the marks each carries. A Group 4 science Internal Assessment is marked on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each for twenty-four in total. A Mathematics Internal Assessment runs across presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. Someone who has taken Diploma cohorts through assessment answers without looking. Someone who has not will talk pleasantly and generally about the Internal Assessment, which tells you which band of the market you are in.

Are there IB Diploma specialists willing to visit Al Yahar?+

Very few, and the reason is arithmetic rather than attitude. Al Yahar is an outlying district well away from the main school cluster, so a visiting tutor loses a long unpaid journey each way and can serve fewer households in an evening. Al Ain's private-school set is also considerably smaller than Abu Dhabi island's, which makes Higher Level science and less common language teachers scarce across the whole city. The subset who are both specialists and willing to make that drive weekly for a full term is close to empty.

What is the Extended Essay word limit, and why does it matter when hiring?+

Four thousand words maximum, and the Theory of Knowledge essay is sixteen hundred. It matters because a tutor who does not know the limit for the piece they are supposedly supervising has not supervised one recently. The limits also carry real planning information: a 4,000-word essay needs a research question narrow enough to answer in that space, and students who write long and then cut tend to lose structural marks rather than surplus prose. Verify current limits with the school's Diploma coordinator or the subject guide.

Does IB Gram send a Diploma tutor to Al Yahar?+

No. IB Gram provides no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-person home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Al Yahar students are taught one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. We say so before any booking because the phrase families search is 'home tutor' and the format should never be a surprise. If physical presence is a requirement, hire locally, ask the criteria question above and ask which MoHRE permit category the tutor holds before the first session.

Which Diploma subjects can you not cover from Al Ain?+

Spanish B and French B are thin and we often decline them outright, with a referral suggestion. Chemistry and Physics at Higher Level are limited rather than unavailable, typically needing one to two weeks to match and best booked in the autumn term of Year 13. Mathematics in both routes, Biology, Economics, Business Management and English are well supplied and usually matched within a week. We publish this because a stated gap costs a family nothing and a concealed one costs them a term, and no competitor page reviewed for this project discloses a coverage limit at all.

At Higher Level, what changes besides the amount of syllabus content?+

No, and a tutor who thinks so will teach well and leave marks on the table. Higher Level adds syllabus content, but it also changes the assessment demand: the additional or extended components reward sustained reasoning across linked steps rather than recall of more material. A student secure on Standard Level content can still be unprepared for a three-step extended-response question, which is a technique gap rather than a knowledge gap. Content hours first, technique hours second; reversing the order wastes most of the technique sessions.

Where do most students lose Internal Assessment marks in the sciences?+

On evaluation and conclusion, which are also the two most teachable criteria. A Group 4 science Internal Assessment is marked on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each. Students put their effort into method and data and then run out of space and energy for evaluating limitations and sources of uncertainty, which is where a disproportionate share of the available marks sit. A tutor who starts by asking how much room the student has left for evaluation is a tutor who has marked these before.

What can a tutor legitimately do on my child's Economics commentaries?+

Explain what each criterion rewards, including the one for use of a key concept; check that diagrams are accurate and correctly labelled; question whether the analysis actually follows from the article; identify missing evaluation; and mark your child's own draft against the criteria. Each commentary is limited to eight hundred words, which means every paragraph has to earn a mark, so structural feedback is worth a great deal. What a tutor cannot do is write any part of it, rewrite rather than comment, or supply the article and analysis as finished work.

Do I need a Diploma specialist for Primary Years support?+

No, and paying for one is a waste. Primary Years has no external assessment, and the useful support is narrow and mechanical: number fluency, reading stamina, written structure. Any strong primary teacher can deliver that, which means an Al Yahar family has the widest choice at this stage rather than the narrowest. The honest advice is to buy less and buy narrowly, with two short sessions a week on one named skill rather than a general weekly hour, and to use the summer before Year 7 as the main block.

Should we hire locally for Standard Level subjects?+

It is a reasonable option and worth considering seriously. For Standard Level subjects a strong general subject teacher with Diploma familiarity will often do well, and for an outlying area that widens the local field considerably. Apply the same two tests: can they name the Internal Assessment criteria, and will they set and mark work between sessions. Where the honest answer changes is Higher Level, particularly in the sciences, because that is exactly where Al Ain's teaching population is thin and a general teacher's knowledge stops being sufficient.

How far ahead should we book a Chemistry HL tutor in Al Ain?+

The autumn term of Year 13 at the latest. Two factors compound. The hardest Higher Level chemistry content arrives late in the course, so a student can look secure in October and meet organic mechanisms and the harder energetics in February with no runway. And experienced Higher Level chemistry teachers are scarce across the whole city because the private-school set is small, so by spring the ones holding good slots are committed. Expect one to two weeks to match even in the autumn, and consider a weekend morning to widen the field.

Why does a weekend slot give us more choice of specialist than a different search area?+

Because once nobody has to drive, availability is distributed by time rather than by geography. Widening the search radius inside Al Ain adds almost nobody, since the city's teaching population is modest and the scarce subjects are scarce everywhere in it. Offering a weekend morning or an earlier Friday slot adds a materially larger number of specialists, because the six to eight weekday evening band is what every family in the emirate wants and it fills first. The slot is the lever; the map is not.

Can you name an IB tutor as an examiner?+

Not unless current examiner status can be evidenced, and we do not use the word to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content. Several pages in this market lean on examiner language without the evidence, and it is fair to ask directly who the examining body is, for which component, and in which recent series. What does matter and is checkable is whether a tutor has taught the subject at that level, for how many cohorts, and whether they can name the assessment criteria.

What should we bring to a first conversation with any tutor?+

A recent marked paper, the subject and the level, and the three questions from this page. The marked paper converts a vague worry into a diagnosis and lets a genuine specialist demonstrate expertise in two minutes rather than claim it in ten. Any tutor who does not want to look at marked work before quoting a plan is quoting a plan they have not thought about. If the student is in Year 13, add a fourth question about the review point and what happens if the plan is not working.

Ask the criteria question, of us or of anyone

If you are trying to find an IB home tutor in Al Yahar who genuinely knows the Diploma, the quickest test is on this page: ask them to name your child's Internal Assessment criteria and the marks each carries, and ask what the word limit is for the piece they would be supervising. It works on any tutor, local or online, and it sorts specialists from capable generalists in under a minute. Our own coverage is published above, declines included: strong in Mathematics, Biology, Economics, Business and English, limited in Higher Level Chemistry and Physics, thin in Spanish B and French B. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a free trial first.
