What a marked Biology HL script actually tells you

Biology at Higher Level is the subject where the gap between effort and grade is widest. A student can revise for eleven hours, know the content, and still come back with a 4. The reason is almost never the biology. It is that a Higher Level Biology paper does not ask what a student knows; it asks for a precise number of specific points, phrased in the way a command term demands, inside a word count the student is never shown. A script marked 11 out of 20 on an extended response is not a script from a student who does not understand gene expression. It is a script from a student who wrote four correct points where the mark scheme wanted seven, and wrote them as description where the paper asked for explanation.

That is diagnosable, and the diagnosis sits in a document you already have. Before you pay anyone in Ajman, Sharjah or anywhere else, find the last Biology HL script the school returned. Look at where the pen marks stop. If the teacher's ticks cluster in the first half of every long answer and thin out after that, the student is running out of distinct points, not out of knowledge. If ticks are spread evenly but the total is still low, the student is losing marks on command terms and on the data questions. Those are two different problems and they need two different sorts of hour.

This page is organised around that evidence trail rather than around a sales argument. It sets out where the marks sit in the current Biology guide, what each command term actually requires on paper, how the four investigation criteria are worded and what a draft looks like when it is on track, and what a twelve-week run of sessions should leave behind in writing. If a tutor cannot show you those artefacts, the hours are not working, whatever the student says about feeling more confident.

A word on grade movement, because it is the thing every parent asks and almost every tutoring page answers dishonestly. Nobody can promise a Biology HL grade. What can be shown is movement in the components that make the grade up: raw marks on timed Paper 2 Section A questions, the number of distinct mark-scheme points landed in an extended response, the criteria bands a scientific investigation draft is sitting in. Those are countable week by week. A page that promises a 7 is selling you something it cannot deliver; a tutor who hands back a Paper 2 Section B answer with the mark scheme's seven points listed in the margin, three of them circled as present, is giving you something you can act on.

Ajman adds one practical wrinkle to all of this. A large share of Ajman families work in Dubai or Sharjah, which pushes the realistic start of a weekday session past 19:00, and Biology HL students are frequently the same students carrying Chemistry HL and a Maths course. An hour of travel either way is an hour that was going to be revision. Online delivery is what keeps the hour in the house, and it is also what gives an Ajman student access to a Higher Level Biology specialist rather than to whoever teaches science within a twenty-minute drive of Al Nuaimiya.

At a glance

  • The script, not the student's self-report, is where the diagnosis lives
  • Paper 2 Section B answers are where most HL marks are left on the table
  • The scientific investigation is marked against four criteria worth six marks each
  • Command terms carry mark-scheme consequences: outline, explain and suggest are not synonyms
  • Ask every tutor for a marked script at the end of the free trial lesson
  • Lessons are delivered online over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Ajman student arriving at Biology HL has usually come through one of three routes, and each route leaves a different hole. The notes below say what that hole normally is and what evidence shows it has been filled.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Biology at Higher Level runs over roughly 240 taught hours across two years, against about 150 at Standard Level. The extra time is not spread evenly: it concentrates in the additional depth attached to each theme and in the volume of data-handling practice the course assumes. Assessment in the guide currently being sat is two written papers plus the student's own scientific investigation, which carries a fifth of the final mark.

Ajman Academy is the emirate's IB continuum school, so a local Diploma cohort is small and a Higher Level Biology set can be smaller still. That has a direct consequence for evidence: with few students in the room, there is little peer benchmarking, and a student can sit at a 4 for a whole term without it looking unusual. Marked past-paper work becomes the only honest yardstick.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences marks against four criteria, and the written feedback a student has lived with for five years is criterion-shaped: a comment on inquiry and designing, a comment on processing and evaluating. It builds good habits of investigation and poor habits of timed writing, because MYP work is rarely produced against a clock with a mark scheme behind it.

An Ajman Academy student moving up from MYP into Biology HL usually arrives with strong practical instincts and no experience of a mark-scheme point as a unit of currency. The evidence of that transition going well is specific: the first timed Paper 2 Section A attempt scores poorly, and the second, after the command-term work, scores noticeably better on the same topic.

PRE-DPAges 15-16 · Year 11

IGCSE and Year 11 into Biology HL

Most Higher Level Biology students in the northern emirates come from Cambridge or Pearson IGCSE Biology rather than from MYP, because the UK curriculum is the largest single curriculum in the UAE private sector. An IGCSE A* in Biology is a weak predictor of a 6 at Higher Level: the content overlaps, the assessment style does not.

The usual Ajman pattern is a student who finished IGCSE Biology at a Sharjah or Ajman British-curriculum school in June and started Higher Level in September with no bridging work. The gap that shows up first is statistics and data interpretation, which IGCSE Biology touches lightly and Paper 1B interrogates directly. Six to eight weeks of targeted data work closes it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Higher Level Biology is taught through themes and levels of organisation rather than as a list of chapters, which makes it hard for a parent to see which part is broken. The breakdown below names the areas where marked scripts most often show losses, with what the loss looks like on paper.

Water, carbohydrates, lipids and proteins

HL and SL

Molecular structure questions reward precision in language: hydrogen bonding, cohesion, condensation and hydrolysis each have a required phrasing. Scripts lose marks here by describing a property without naming the structural feature that causes it. The fix is vocabulary drilling against mark schemes, not re-teaching.

Cell structure, membranes and transport

HL and SL

Osmosis and active transport questions frequently carry a data stem. Students who know the biology still lose marks by answering the biology rather than the data, ignoring the graph in front of them. Marked scripts show this as a correct paragraph with no reference to any figure in the question.

Cell cycle, mitosis and meiosis

HL and SL

Higher Level adds depth to the control of the cell cycle and the behaviour of chromosomes, and this is a reliable source of extended-response questions. The commonest loss is stage sequencing written loosely, so an examiner cannot award a point for a process the student has described out of order.

DNA replication, transcription and translation

HL and SL

This cluster produces the longest answers and the widest mark spread on the paper. Higher Level expects named enzymes, directionality and the role of specific sequences. Scripts that score poorly are usually complete in content and short on distinct, separately creditable points.

Gene expression and inheritance

HL only emphasis

Genetics questions reward working shown as a labelled cross with phenotype ratios stated. Answers written as prose lose marks that the same student would gain by drawing. A tutor should be asking for a diagram before a sentence on every inheritance item.

Gas exchange, transport and homeostasis

HL and SL

Physiology questions are marked on causal chains: a change, a receptor, a response, an effect. Students who list facts about the kidney or the lung score well below students who write four linked clauses. This is a writing-structure problem rather than a knowledge problem.

Nerves, muscles and movement

HL only emphasis

Higher Level content on action potentials and muscle contraction carries heavy terminology and a strong sequencing demand. Scripts lose marks to vague timing language. Practice here is best done as a spoken explanation before it is written, which online screen-sharing suits well.

Ecology, energy flow and climate

HL and SL

Ecology is frequently the last theme taught and the first one forgotten, and it supplies a disproportionate share of data-based questions. Marked scripts from January mocks show ecology losses more often than any other theme, purely because of when it was covered.

Statistics and data-based questions

HL and SL

Paper 1B is nothing but data. Error bars, standard deviation, correlation against causation and reading a scale correctly are each worth marks, and each is a skill rather than a topic. This is the single highest-yield area for a student on a 4 who already knows the content.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

A fifth of the final grade, marked against four criteria worth six marks each. Most losses are in methodology and evaluation rather than in the biology: an unquantified variable, a sample size never justified, a conclusion stated more strongly than the data allows.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of buying Higher Level Biology hours, each producing a different kind of evidence. Most Ajman families start with the first and add the second in the January mock window.

Weekly one-to-one, sixty or ninety minutes

The standard arrangement: one fixed slot a week, content taught against the student's own school sequence rather than a generic scheme of work. A ninety-minute slot is the shorter unit for Biology HL in practice, because a timed Paper 2 Section B answer plus marking plus a re-write does not fit into an hour.

  • Session notes and a marked piece of written work returned each week
  • Topic sequence matched to the school's own order, not a fixed curriculum
  • Timed questions set from the start rather than saved for revision
  • Fixed Gulf Standard Time slot, with Ramadan timings moved on request

Investigation supervision block

A short series of sessions attached to the scientific investigation, run as process coaching against the four published criteria. The tutor reads what the student has produced, names which criterion each weakness sits in, and sets the next decision for the student to make. The student does every piece of the thinking and all of the writing.

  • Research question narrowed and variables quantified before any data is collected
  • Method critiqued for control and sample size, in the student's own words
  • Statistics chosen with the reasoning written down by the student
  • Feedback logged so the school can see whose work it is

Paper-focused revision run

A block of sessions in the eight to twelve weeks before the examination series, built entirely on past papers under timing. Each session is a paper or a section sat cold, marked against the published scheme, and reviewed point by point. The output is a running score record rather than a set of notes.

  • Paper 1A and 1B sat separately so data skills are scored on their own
  • Section B extended responses marked against the full point list
  • Weak themes re-taught only where the score record identifies them
  • Weekend morning slots available during the mock and examination windows

01

Where the marks sit in Higher Level Biology, and where scripts lose them

  • Ask for Paper 1A and Paper 1B scores separately, never as one figure
  • Count distinct mark-scheme points in a Section B answer, not lines written
  • Check which guide the cohort sits before buying revision books
  • The investigation deadline is set by the school, so it is negotiable in a way exam dates are not

In the Biology guide currently being assessed, there is no Paper 3. The grade is built from two written papers and the student's own scientific investigation, and the shift away from the older three-paper structure matters for how you read an old mock result: a script marked under the previous arrangement is not directly comparable to one marked now. Confirm with your child's Diploma coordinator which guide the cohort is sitting before buying any revision material, because second-hand books for the superseded course are still circulating widely in the UAE.

Paper 1 splits into two parts that behave like different examinations. Part A is multiple choice across the whole course, and it punishes thin coverage rather than thin understanding: a student who skipped a sub-topic loses those marks outright with nothing to write their way out of. Part B is data-based, built around unseen material, and it rewards a skill set that has almost nothing to do with memorised content. A student can be strong on one part and weak on the other, and a single Paper 1 percentage hides that completely. Ask for the two parts to be scored separately.

Paper 2 is where Higher Level grades are decided. Section A mixes data analysis with short structured questions; Section B is an extended response chosen from options, worth a substantial block of marks in one go. The commonest pattern in a marked Section B answer is a student who has written a page of accurate biology and earned half the available marks, because the mark scheme lists distinct creditable points and the answer repeated three of them in different words. That is the single most fixable thing in the subject.

The scientific investigation carries a fifth of the final grade and is marked against four criteria of six marks each. It is the only component where the student controls the conditions entirely, and the only one where a deadline is set inside the school rather than by the examination board. It is therefore both the easiest component to improve and the easiest to leave until it is too late to improve.

Command terms: four words that decide a Biology mark

  • Outline means brief and separate; a paragraph here costs time, not gains marks
  • Explain requires a stated cause, not an accurate description
  • Suggest requires application to unseen material, so taught content alone scores nothing
  • Compare and contrast needs both similarities and differences, framed as comparisons

Every question in a Biology paper opens with a command term, and the term is an instruction about structure rather than about content. Students treat these words as interchangeable requests for information. Examiners treat them as specifications. The distance between those two readings is worth several grades over a full paper, and it is the quickest return available on tutoring time because it needs no new biology at all.

State and outline ask for brief, separate items with no development. A student who writes a paragraph in answer to an outline question has spent four minutes earning two marks and will run short of time later in the paper. Describe asks for detailed features without reasons. Explain asks for reasons, and an explanation with no causal link in it scores nothing however accurate the biology. Suggest asks the student to apply biology to unfamiliar material, which means an answer that only repeats taught content cannot be credited, because the mark scheme is looking for application.

Compare and contrast is the term that produces the most wasted writing. It requires both similarities and differences, and it requires them framed as comparisons rather than as two separate descriptions. A script that describes process A for half a page and process B for the other half has not compared anything and typically collects a fraction of the marks. The repair is mechanical: a two-column table in rough, then sentences that carry both halves in each line.

The way to work on this is with the student's own marked script and the published mark scheme side by side on a shared screen. Read the command term, predict what the scheme will want, then open the scheme. After about fifteen of those cycles, students start predicting accurately, and the effect shows up in the next timed paper rather than in the one after it.

03

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion

  • A research question without a stated range and interval is a topic, not a question
  • Controlled variables need a named method of control, one per variable
  • Graphs without uncertainty treatment cap the data analysis criterion
  • Evaluation marks come from this investigation's specific limitations, not a generic list

The investigation is the component where a parent can see progress most clearly, because it exists as a sequence of drafts. Four criteria, six marks each, twenty-four in total, scaled to a fifth of the final grade. Each criterion has published descriptors, and each has a characteristic way of going wrong that is visible in a first draft to anyone who knows what to look for.

Research design fails on vagueness. A question such as whether temperature affects enzyme activity is not a research question; it is a topic. The marks arrive when the independent variable has a stated range and interval, the dependent variable has a stated method of measurement with units, and the controlled variables are named with the method of control written next to each one. A first draft that reads as a plan rather than a specification is a draft sitting in the lower bands, and that is diagnosable in two minutes.

Data analysis fails on presentation and on uncertainty. Raw data with no processing, graphs without error bars, a statistical test chosen because it was the one the class was taught: each of these caps the criterion. Conclusion fails on overreach, where a student writes that the hypothesis is proven when the data supports a trend within a range. Evaluation fails on generality, where weaknesses are listed as a standard set rather than as the specific limitations this investigation actually had.

A tutor's role here is bounded and should be stated plainly in writing. The tutor may teach the relevant biology, explain what a criterion requires, ask questions about a decision the student has made, and give feedback on one draft in the way the school's own supervisor would. The tutor may not supply sentences, choose the research question, process the data or improve the prose. The student produces every word. Any service offering more than that is offering the student a malpractice finding.

A twelve-week evidence log: what should exist on paper by week twelve

  • A written diagnosis naming specific themes and skills, by session three
  • Equivalent questions re-sat and re-scored, not new topics every week
  • An investigation design section read and returned inside the first eight weeks
  • Every marked script kept in one folder, in date order, available on request

Tutoring that works produces documents. Tutoring that does not produces reassurance. The difference is visible by about week four, and a parent who knows what should exist by then can stop an unproductive arrangement a term earlier than they otherwise would. What follows is the artefact trail from a typical twelve-week run on Higher Level Biology, starting from a student sitting around a 4 after a January mock.

Weeks one to three are diagnostic and should feel slow. A full Paper 1B sat cold, scored separately from Part A. One Section B extended response sat under timing and marked against the complete point list, with the points the student missed written out. From those two documents comes a short written diagnosis naming two or three themes and one or two skills. If no written diagnosis exists after three sessions, there is no plan, and the hours after that are being spent on whatever the student mentions at the start of the lesson.

Weeks four to eight are the repair, and the evidence is repeat performance rather than new notes. The same style of question, from a different paper, scored again. A student who earned nine marks on a Section B answer in week two and fifteen on an equivalent question in week seven has moved, and the two marked scripts prove it. Over the same window the investigation should move from research question to collected data, with a draft of the design section read and returned. Weeks nine to twelve are consolidation: full papers, timing, and a score record that either rises or does not.

None of this requires a specialised reporting system or a progress dashboard. It requires the marked scripts kept in one folder in date order. Ask for them at the end of every session. A tutor who cannot produce the last four weeks of marked work on request is not marking, and marking is the part of the job that moves a Biology HL grade.

What actually moves a 4 to a 6 in Biology HL

  • Plan Section B answers as a list of distinct points before writing prose
  • Quote a figure from the question stem in every data-based answer
  • Treat command terms as structural instructions, not requests for information
  • Sit full papers against a clock, because timing losses are invisible otherwise

Grade movement in Biology HL is rarely about covering more content. Students on a 4 have usually met everything on the course at least once. What separates them from students on a 6 is a small, stable set of behaviours, and those behaviours are teachable in a defined number of hours rather than over an open-ended arrangement. Naming them honestly is more useful than any promise about outcomes.

The first is point-counting in extended responses. A student who learns to plan a Section B answer as a list of distinct creditable points before writing a sentence typically gains a visible block of marks within a month. The second is data fluency: error bars, significance, interpolation, and the discipline of quoting a figure from the stem in every data answer. The third is command-term accuracy, which is pure technique. The fourth is the investigation, where moving two criteria from the middle band to the top band is worth a material slice of a fifth of the grade.

The fifth is less comfortable: timing. Higher Level Biology papers are long, and students who run out of time lose marks on questions they could answer. Marked scripts show it as a sharp drop in quality across the final pages, or as blank space. No amount of content teaching fixes that; only sitting full papers against a clock does, which is why a revision block built on past papers is a different purchase from weekly content lessons and should be bought deliberately.

What cannot be promised, and should be treated with real scepticism wherever it is offered, is a specific grade. The honest version is this: these five behaviours are what the marks respond to, they can be worked on in a stated number of sessions, and the score record will show whether they are moving. If it is not moving after six weeks of proper marking, the arrangement is wrong and should change rather than continue.

06

Academic honesty: the line a Biology tutor must not cross

  • Keep version history on the investigation document so the drafting sequence is visible
  • Feedback should be questions and criterion references, never replacement text
  • The student must be able to explain the method and the statistics out loud
  • Declare outside support honestly where the school asks for a declaration

The IB treats work submitted for assessment as the student's own, and a breach is an academic misconduct matter that can cost a Diploma rather than a grade. The scientific investigation is the point of maximum exposure, because it is produced at home, over weeks, with help available from every direction. Parents in the UAE are routinely offered services that cross this line, sometimes openly, at prices that suggest the work is produced to order. One competitor in this market advertises finished internal assessments as a product. That is an integrity breach, and buying it puts the student at risk, not the seller.

The permissible shape of support is well defined and worth having in writing before any money changes hands. A tutor may teach the underlying biology, explain what each criterion requires and in whose words, ask questions that force the student to justify a decision, point at a weakness without correcting it, and read one draft in the same way a school supervisor reads one. That is a substantial amount of help and it is entirely legitimate.

What is not permissible is the tutor supplying text, choosing the research question, performing the data processing, rewriting the prose, or producing a model report for the student to adapt. The practical test is simple and a parent can apply it without any biology: if the sentences in the report are not sentences the student could have produced and can explain under questioning, the work is not the student's own. Ask the student to explain their method and their statistics out loud. If they cannot, the problem is upstream of the grade.

A good tutor makes this easy to audit. Feedback should arrive as written comments on the student's own document with version history intact, so the school can see the sequence of the student's drafts and the tutor's questions. Where a student's school asks for a declaration of outside support, the honest answer is that a tutor taught the content and gave criterion-referenced feedback on one draft. That answer causes nobody any difficulty.

07

The hour an Ajman family gets back by working online

Parents searching for a Biology tutor in Ajman are usually picturing someone arriving at the house. That market exists here, and it is worth describing honestly before explaining why IB Gram does not operate in it. A tutor who travels prices travel into the hour: published UAE rate cards put in-home one-to-one work in a band of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor and AED 200 to 450 or more for an examination-level specialist, with a premium tier above that. Those are the figures reported by UAE rate sources including Bestimate's 2026 tutoring-cost tables, not IB Gram's prices.

The second cost is the one nobody prices: supply. Higher Level Biology with a confident grasp of the current guide's investigation criteria is a narrow specialism. Within a twenty-minute drive of Al Mowaihat or Al Jurf, the number of people who do that work well is small, and the ones who do are already full during the January mock window. A family restricted to a drive radius is not choosing the best available Biology HL specialist; it is choosing the best one in a small circle, at the price travel demands.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home tutoring is a service offered only in India, and every UAE lesson runs one-to-one over live video. On a data-heavy subject that is not a compromise: a shared screen with the actual graph on it, annotated live, is better than two people leaning over one printed page, and the marked script arrives as a file the family keeps rather than a page in a bag. For an Ajman family whose working day ends in Dubai, the practical gain is simpler still. The session starts when the student is home, not when a tutor has crossed the emirate.

The honest limits are worth stating too. Online needs a stable connection, a surface the student can write on, and a household willing to leave them undisturbed for ninety minutes. Where those are missing, online works less well, and that is worth testing in the free trial lesson rather than discovering in week five.

Counting backwards from the May series to the week you are in

  • Take exam and results dates from the Diploma coordinator or ibo.org, not from a tutoring site
  • Investigation deadlines are set inside the school, so they are visible months ahead
  • Settle the research question in the autumn to leave slack for a failed experiment
  • Move sessions to post-iftar timings through Ramadan rather than pausing them

Diploma students in the UAE sit the May series, and the examination window is the fixed point everything else hangs from. The dates themselves should be taken from the school's Diploma coordinator or from ibo.org rather than from a tutoring page, because secondary sources circulate inconsistent windows and the registration and upload deadlines differ by school. What does not change is the shape of the run-in, and that shape is what a family can plan against today.

Working backwards: the written papers sit at the end. Before them is a revision window where the only productive activity is timed papers and targeted repair of what those papers expose. Before that sit the school's internal deadlines for the scientific investigation, which usually fall in the first half of the final year and are set by the school rather than by the IB. Before those sits the data collection, which needs laboratory access the student does not control, and which is therefore the step most likely to slip. Before that sits the research question, which is the cheapest thing in the entire sequence to get right and the most expensive to get wrong.

The practical consequence for an Ajman family is that the useful moment to start on the investigation is earlier than it feels. A student who settles a research question in the autumn has a term of slack for a failed experiment. A student who settles it in February has none, and a failed set of readings then costs marks in a component worth a fifth of the grade. For the written papers the pressure runs the other way: starting timed-paper work too early, before content is covered, produces demoralising scores that teach nothing.

Ramadan falls inside the Diploma year and reshapes when revision can happen. School hours shorten, evenings restructure around iftar, and a 17:00 session becomes unworkable for many households while a 21:30 one becomes easy. Sessions should move rather than pause: a student who stops for a month in the final spring loses the window where timed practice matters most. Ask for the shifted slot in advance, because the late evening hours fill quickly across the northern emirates.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ajman

Where a student sits for a Higher Level Biology lesson in Ajman changes what the lesson can do. Screen-sharing a data question needs a stable connection and a surface for written working; a phone propped against a textbook does not survive a two-hour Paper 2 practice. The notes below are practical rather than promotional.

Al Nuaimiya

Dense apartment blocks with a long-standing expatriate population and a short run to Sharjah schools. Shared study space is the usual constraint, so Biology sessions here are often booked after 20:00 once a sibling has finished homework.

Largely villa housing, which makes a dedicated desk easier to arrange. Families here frequently run two Higher Level sciences for the same student, and the scheduling question becomes which subject gets the fresher hour of the evening.

Al Mowaihat

A newer villa district with a heavy school-bus load towards Sharjah. Arrival home can slip past 16:30, so a Biology HL session that starts before 18:00 is usually a session with a tired student in it.

Ajman Corniche and Al Rumaila

Older central districts close to the Ajman Academy catchment. Short school runs here free up the early evening, which is why Corniche families are the ones most able to take a 17:30 slot for timed paper practice.

Al Jurf

Mixed residential and industrial, with the longest internal commutes in the emirate for families working in Dubai. A weekday Biology lesson realistically starts at 19:30 or later, and weekend mornings carry more of the load.

Al Zorah and Al Yasmeen

Newer low-density developments where households are often recent arrivals mid-way through the Diploma. Mid-course transfers are the common case here, and the first job is reconciling two schools' investigation deadlines.

Emirates City and Al Alia

High-rise towers with a young family profile and a significant Sharjah and Dubai commuting population. Connection quality varies by building, which is worth testing in the free trial rather than discovering during a mock.

Al Helio and Al Rashidiya

Established residential areas with good access to the Sharjah border crossing. Students here often attend schools in two different emirates within one family, so a shared calendar matters more than it sounds.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ajman

Ajman

Private schools in Ajman sit under the federal Ministry of Education rather than an emirate-level authority, which is the position u.ae sets out for Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Ajman Academy is the emirate's IB continuum provider; the rest of the local sector is largely British and Indian curriculum, which is why many Higher Level Biology students in Ajman actually sit in a Sharjah classroom.

Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, within commuting distance

Sharjah's private schools are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah's by its Department of Knowledge, both of which approve curricula and fees as well as inspecting. An Ajman family choosing a Diploma place often chooses across that border, and the tutoring calendar then has to follow a different school's internal deadlines.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the last marked script

Before any call, send the most recent marked Biology HL paper or mock, and the investigation draft if one exists. A script with a teacher's marks on it tells a specialist more in five minutes than a half-hour conversation about how the student is finding the course.

  2. 02

    Free trial lesson, marked

One lesson at no cost, with no card details taken. Ask for it to end with a timed question marked against the published scheme. What you are testing is not whether the tutor is pleasant but whether marking comes back with named mark-scheme points on it.

  3. 03

    Written diagnosis

Within the first three sessions you should receive a short written diagnosis: which themes are weak, which skills are weak, and which component the score record says is costing the most. If that document never appears, the sessions have no plan behind them.

  4. 04

    Fixed slot and a folder

A regular Gulf Standard Time slot that fits an Ajman evening, and one folder where every marked script is kept in date order. The folder is the record. It is what makes a conversation about value possible in week eight.

  5. 05

    Review at six weeks

Compare comparable questions from week one and week six. If the score record has not moved and the marking is genuinely happening, the arrangement needs changing rather than extending. A tutor who says this first is a tutor worth keeping.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marking you can read

Every piece of written work comes back with the mark scheme's own points named, including the ones the student missed. A tick does not tell you where the mark was. A list of seven required points with three circled does.

Specialists, not generalists

Higher Level Biology and its investigation criteria are a specific competence, separate from general science teaching. Online delivery means an Ajman family is choosing from people who do this subject at this level, rather than from those within driving distance.

The investigation treated as process

Support is structured as teaching, questioning and criterion-referenced feedback on the student's own drafts. The student produces every word. That boundary is stated in writing before the first session, which protects the Diploma as well as the grade.

An honest account of cost

Market rate bands on this page are quoted from published UAE rate sources with the year attached, not presented as our pricing. Where the right answer is fewer paid hours and more past papers, that is what the first conversation will say.

Scheduling built for the northern emirates

Sessions are timed for households where a parent commutes to Dubai or Sharjah: later weekday starts, weekend mornings in the mock window, and post-iftar slots through Ramadan rather than a month off.

Independent of every school named

IB Gram is a tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to any school, group or examination board. Schools appear on this page as market context, which is also why no inspection rating or school outcome is quoted here.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ajman: your questions answered

What should I ask for at the end of a trial lesson with a Biology HL tutor in Ajman?+

Ask for one timed question marked against the published mark scheme, with the scheme's points listed and the missed ones named. That single artefact tells you more than any conversation. A tutor who marks properly will produce it without hesitation; one who returns a page of ticks and a verbal summary is not doing the part of the job that moves a Higher Level grade. Also ask what they would work on first and why, and listen for whether the answer refers to the script you sent or to generic revision advice. The free trial is one lesson, with no card details required.

Is there still a Paper 3 in IB Biology at Higher Level?+

Not in the guide currently being assessed. The Biology course was restructured and the grade is now built from two written papers plus the student's own scientific investigation, which carries a fifth of the final mark. This matters practically because second-hand revision guides and question banks written for the older three-paper course are still widely sold in the UAE, and a student practising Paper 3 style questions is spending hours on a component that no longer exists. Confirm with your school's Diploma coordinator which guide your child's cohort sits before buying any material, and buy nothing that does not state its edition.

How do I tell whether my child's Biology problem is content or technique?+

Look at the distribution of marks on a recent script rather than the total. If whole questions are blank or scored near zero, the content was not covered and teaching is needed. If almost every question has some marks but few have full marks, the content is largely there and the losses are technique: command terms, point-counting in extended responses, and data handling. The second pattern is much more common at Higher Level and much faster to repair. A proper diagnosis separates Paper 1A from Paper 1B scores, because coverage gaps and data skills are different problems with different fixes.

Can a tutor help with my child's Biology scientific investigation without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor may teach the relevant biology, explain what each of the four criteria requires, question a decision the student has made, point at a weakness without correcting it, and give feedback on one draft as a school supervisor would. A tutor may not supply sentences, select the research question, process the data or rewrite the prose. The test is whether the student can explain every choice and every calculation out loud under questioning. Keep version history on the document so the sequence of the student's own drafts is visible to the school.

How many marks is the Biology investigation worth and how is it split?+

The scientific investigation carries a fifth of the final Biology grade at both levels and is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria worth six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Most losses sit in the first and last of those rather than in the biology itself. Research design marks need a quantified range and interval for the variable being changed and a named method of control for each controlled variable. Evaluation marks need weaknesses specific to this experiment, with realistic improvements, rather than a generic list that would fit any investigation.

My daughter writes a full page on Paper 2 Section B and still scores half marks. Why?+

Because the mark scheme awards distinct creditable points, and a full page can contain three of them restated in different words. Length is not the currency; separate, specific, scheme-matching points are. The repair is to plan the answer as a numbered list of points before writing a sentence, aiming for more points than the question's mark allocation, then writing each as one clear statement with its causal link included. Students who learn this typically show a visible gain on comparable questions within a month, and the two marked scripts prove it happened.

Does an Ajman student need a tutor based in the UAE for Biology HL?+

No, and insisting on it narrows the choice considerably. What matters is that the tutor knows the current Biology guide, marks against published schemes and teaches at the right hour in Gulf Standard Time. Higher Level Biology with real command of the investigation criteria is a narrow specialism, and restricting the search to people living within driving distance of Al Nuaimiya or Al Rawda means choosing from a small pool at the price travel demands. Where no specialist is free in a requested slot, you should be told that plainly rather than offered a general science tutor instead.

What does Paper 1B test that revision guides do not cover?+

Paper 1B is built on unseen data: graphs, tables, error bars, scales and figures the student has never met. It tests interpretation rather than recall, so a student can revise every theme thoroughly and still score poorly. The skills involved are specific and learnable: quoting a figure from the stem in every answer, reading an axis carefully, distinguishing correlation from causation, and knowing what an error bar permits a conclusion to say. For a student sitting around a 4 who already knows the content, this is usually the highest-yield area to work on first.

How long before the May series should Biology HL sessions start?+

For written papers, a twelve-week run of timed practice and targeted repair before the series is the common shape, and starting much earlier tends to produce demoralising scores on content not yet covered. For the scientific investigation the answer is the opposite: start in the autumn of the final year, because the research question is cheap to fix early and expensive to fix late, and a failed set of readings needs a term of slack. Take the exact examination and results dates from your school's Diploma coordinator or from ibo.org rather than from any tutoring website.

Do private tutors working with Ajman families need a permit?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need a private tutor work permit from MoHRE, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. People tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so treat any specific figure you are quoted with caution. Applications go through the MoHRE website, smart app and e-services system.

Can my child's own Biology teacher tutor them privately in Ajman?+

It is a question to put to the school before the money, not after. Abu Dhabi's regulator has professional-ethics rules barring school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that also addresses serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Ajman schools sit under the federal Ministry of Education, so the school's own policy and the permit conditions are what govern it. There is also a practical objection: the teacher who set the work is not the best person to show a student how a different examiner reads it.

Who regulates the school my child attends if we live in Ajman?+

Private schools in Ajman are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education, as are those in Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Dubai schools answer to KHDA, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain schools to ADEK, Sharjah schools to the Sharjah Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah schools to its Department of Knowledge. The distinction matters for Ajman families because many send children across the Sharjah border, which puts the school under a different authority with its own fee and curriculum approvals. The complete regulator map is published on the UAE government portal at u.ae.

Will Biology HL count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Equivalency is assessed by the Ministry of Education against published requirements per curriculum, and the British-track rules are the ones published clearly: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A-Level at E or two AS-Levels. For the IB, no points threshold should be quoted from a tutoring page; verify it on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority directly. Equivalency is a process the family completes with the ministry, not something a tutoring platform performs or can speed up.

Does IB Gram send a Biology tutor to a house in Ajman?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. For a data-heavy subject this suits the work: the actual graph sits on a shared screen and is annotated live, and the marked script arrives as a file the family keeps in date order rather than a page in a school bag. It also means an Ajman family is choosing a Higher Level Biology specialist rather than whoever covers science within a short drive.

What happens if no Higher Level Biology specialist is free in our slot?+

You should be told so directly. Higher Level Biology with command of the current investigation criteria is a narrow specialism, and demand concentrates in the January mock window and the weeks before the May series, when late-evening slots across the northern emirates fill first. The honest options are a different time, a short wait, or a specialist in a nearby time zone whose hours still work for an Ajman evening. What should never happen is a general science tutor being presented as a Higher Level Biology specialist because the slot was available.

Can one tutor take Biology HL and a second Higher Level science for the same student?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking, because a student carrying two Higher Level sciences has a timetable problem as well as a subject problem. Some tutors genuinely cover Biology and Chemistry at Higher Level; many are strong in one and adequate in the other, which produces one good hour and one mediocre one. Ask for a marked script in each subject during the trial and compare them. If the marking quality differs noticeably, split the subjects between two specialists and accept the extra scheduling work rather than paying specialist rates for generalist marking.

Start with the script, not the sales call

Find the last Biology HL paper the school marked and the investigation draft if one exists, and send them before anything else happens. A specialist reading those two documents can tell you in a few minutes whether the problem is coverage, technique, data skills or the investigation, and roughly how many hours each of those takes to repair. Then take the free trial lesson and ask for one timed question marked against the published scheme. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, timed for an Ajman evening, and every session leaves a marked script behind. If the score record is not moving by week six, change the arrangement rather than extending it.
