Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 Tutor in Ajman

A Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 tutor in Ajman is usually brought in with no idea which of three subjects has gone wrong. Chemistry behaves as three strands at once: physical chemistry, which is calculation; inorganic chemistry, which is pattern and precise observation; and organic chemistry, which is almost always taught last. This page scores a marked script by strand instead of by paper, so a household knows which strand it is funding. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Marks scored by strand, so a weak paper points at a specific repair
  • Mole calculations marked line by line, the way partial credit is awarded
  • Qualitative analysis wording treated as learnable text, not intuition

IB & IGCSE in Ajman

Chemistry is three subjects on one paper, and the strands fail separately

A chemistry mark is an average of three unrelated performances, which is why it is such poor guidance about what to do next. Physical chemistry is arithmetic with chemical rules attached: moles, concentrations, yields, energy changes, rates. Inorganic chemistry is pattern recognition plus a body of precise observations that have to be reproduced in the examiner's words. Organic chemistry is a set of families, reactions and conditions, and it sits at the end of nearly every scheme of work, which means it is usually the part a January mock never tested.

A student can be strong in two of those and weak in one and come home with a grade 5. A student weak in all three has a different and longer problem. The report card cannot distinguish them, and nor can a percentage, because a percentage averages across the very division that would tell you what to buy. So the work here starts by scoring a marked script strand by strand: how many marks were available in each, how many were taken, and what the losses in each strand had in common.

The output is usually surprisingly specific. A typical Ajman Extended script arrives with inorganic recall in reasonable shape, physical chemistry collapsing somewhere inside the mole chain, and organic chemistry blank because it had not been taught at the time of the mock. That is three different instructions: leave inorganic alone for now, drill the calculation chain line by line, and schedule organic for when the school reaches it so the tuition does not arrive before the teaching does.

0620 also puts a fifth of the grade in a practical component, taken as either a practical test in the school laboratory or a written alternative at a desk. Confirm which route the school entered your child for, along with the component structure and timings for the exam year, at cambridgeinternational.org. Qualitative analysis sits inside that component and inside the theory papers too, and it is the clearest example in the whole syllabus of marks awarded for exact wording rather than for understanding.

What follows is built around what a marked paper can show. There is a line-by-line reading of the mole chain, an account of how equations earn and lose credit, a reference table of the qualitative tests and the observations the scheme expects, and a strand scoreboard a parent can actually keep. Tuition is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses in Ajman, because home visiting is a service it runs only in India. Any in-home rate quoted here is the market's published price, included so the comparison is honest. One more thing worth settling early: whether the entry is Core or Extended, because the tier caps what any amount of tuition can award.

At a glance

  • Core candidates sit Papers 1 and 3; Extended candidates sit Papers 2 and 4
  • The practical component carries 20% of the grade on either route
  • A Core entry caps the certificate at grade C whatever is spent on tuition
  • Qualitative analysis marks are awarded for the examiner's wording, not for a paraphrase
  • Organic chemistry is taught last in most schemes, so a January mock understates a candidate
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry at 0620 is a stage whose marks are distributed unevenly across three strands, and each stage of the route redistributes them again. The notes below say what each stage demands and what counts as evidence it is in place.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620

A two-year course assessed by a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical component, with the first two set by tier. The twelve topic areas run from states of matter, atomic structure and stoichiometry through electrochemistry, energetics, rates and equilibria, acids and bases, the Periodic Table and metals, to environmental chemistry, organic chemistry and experimental techniques. There is no coursework. Confirm the structure and timings for your child's exam year at cambridgeinternational.org.

Ajman campuses vary widely in laboratory access, and chemistry is the subject where that shows up most. Qualitative analysis is learned far better with a test tube in hand, and a cohort that has seen few precipitates will reproduce the observations from a textbook rather than from memory of the colour. That is a real disadvantage and it is also entirely fixable on paper, because the examiner is marking the words rather than the experience.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences

The combined route several Ajman and Sharjah schools run in place of three separate sciences. It covers chemistry to a reduced depth alongside physics and biology and produces one or two grades rather than three, with a practical component spanning all three subjects. A student on this route is not sitting 0620, and tuition built on 0620 past papers will cover material that is not on their specification.

Read the subject line on the statement of entry. In Ajman households with children at two different campuses this check is worth doing per child, because one may be on separate sciences and the other on a co-ordinated route, and the revision materials for the two are not interchangeable even though the chemistry topics have the same names.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Chemistry, and A Level Chemistry

Where a strong Extended 0620 grade leads. Both courses assume the mole concept as fluent working language rather than as a topic, and both open with bonding and energetics at a depth that expects the IGCSE treatment to be secure. A candidate who passed 0620 while avoiding the calculation strand meets that gap in the first weeks of Year 12, and the catch-up costs considerably more than securing it in Year 11 would have.

No IB session or results date is published on this page, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking; confirm any Diploma date with the school's coordinator or on ibo.org. UAE schools sit the May session, and the internal deadlines inside a school fall months earlier, which is why the calculation strand is the one worth funding properly before Year 11 ends.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The twelve topic areas of 0620 distribute across the three strands, and the evidence that each is secure differs. The notes below give what secure work looks like and the error that recurs when it is missing.

States of matter and separation techniques

Core and Extended

Kinetic particle theory, changes of state, diffusion, and the separation methods including filtration, crystallisation, distillation and chromatography. Secure answers describe particle arrangement and movement separately. The recurring loss is a change-of-state explanation that mentions energy without mentioning the forces between particles being overcome.

Atoms, elements and bonding

Core and Extended

Atomic structure, isotopes, ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, and the properties that follow from each. Secure work draws a dot-and-cross diagram with charges shown on ions and the correct number of electrons in every shell. Marks disappear when a property is stated without being linked to the structure that causes it.

Stoichiometry and the mole

Core and Extended

Relative masses, the mole, molar mass, concentration, reacting-mass calculations, limiting reagents, percentage yield and purity, and gas volumes at Extended. This is the strand that decides most Extended grades, and it is lost at identifiable steps rather than wholesale, which is why it is marked line by line in sessions rather than as a final answer.

Electrochemistry and electrolysis

Core and Extended

Electrolysis of molten and aqueous compounds, the products at each electrode, inert and active electrodes, and half equations at Extended. Secure work identifies the ions present before predicting anything. The usual loss is a correct product named at the wrong electrode, which is a definitions problem rather than a chemistry one and takes a single session.

Chemical energetics and rates of reaction

Core and Extended

Exothermic and endothermic changes, energy-level diagrams, bond breaking and making, and the factors affecting rate including catalysts and surface area. Secure answers on rate refer to collision frequency and to the proportion of collisions with sufficient energy. Explanations that say only that particles move faster earn part of the mark and lose the rest.

Acids, bases, salts and titration

Core and Extended

Acid and base reactions, pH, indicators, neutralisation, preparing soluble and insoluble salts, and titration method and calculation. Secure work on salt preparation gives the full method in order, including the step that removes excess reagent. Titration marks are lost on the reading precision and the concordant-results requirement rather than on the arithmetic.

The Periodic Table and metals

Core and Extended

Group properties, trends down a group and across a period, transition elements, the reactivity series, extraction of metals and rusting. Secure answers explain a trend using electron shells rather than restating the trend. The reactivity series is pure recall and is among the cheapest content in the syllabus to secure in a single session.

Chemistry of the environment and industrial processes

Core and Extended

Water treatment, air pollutants and their sources, fertilisers, and the industrial processes named in the syllabus with their conditions. The conditions are recall and are examined as specific values and reagents, so an answer that describes a process correctly without its conditions scores partially. Late in most schemes, and therefore frequently thin in a mock.

Organic chemistry: families, reactions and conditions

Core and Extended

Fuels and fractional distillation, alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and carboxylic acids, addition and substitution, fermentation and the catalytic route, polymers and macromolecules at Extended. Secure work writes a reaction with its conditions attached. This strand is almost always taught last, which means a January mock mark is not evidence about it at all.

Experimental techniques and chemical analysis

Core and Extended

Measurement and apparatus choice, purity and melting points, chromatography interpretation, and the qualitative tests for cations, anions and gases. The qualitative tests are a fixed, learnable body of text where the examiner expects particular words, and the marks are awarded for the observation rather than for the conclusion a student draws from it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of running 0620 support, chosen by which strand the scored script says is failing. All three run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and each begins with a free 50-minute trial lesson used to score the strands.

Weekly one-to-one through Year 11

A fixed slot following the school's teaching order, so organic chemistry is covered when the class reaches it rather than months early. Each session produces written work marked against the published criteria, and the strand scoreboard is updated monthly. For a candidate whose calculation strand is weak, the weekly pattern is what stops that weakness compounding as moles reappear inside electrolysis, energetics and titration.

  • Tracks the school scheme rather than a generic syllabus order
  • One marked written answer out of every session
  • Calculation work placed early in the session, not at the end
  • Strand scores compared against the first diagnostic monthly

A calculation-strand block

Six to ten sessions aimed only at stoichiometry and everything that depends on it: moles, molar mass, concentration, reacting masses, limiting reagents, yield, purity and the titration calculation. This is the narrowest and usually the highest-yield purchase for an Extended candidate, because the strand is marked line by line and partial credit is recoverable step by step rather than all at once.

  • Opens with a timed calculation set marked line by line
  • The chain rebuilt in order: mass, moles, ratio, moles, answer
  • Units and significant figures treated as separate marks
  • Closes with a second timed set for a like-for-like comparison

A qualitative-analysis and practical block

A narrow block on the practical component and the analysis content inside the theory papers. The work is the fixed body of tests for cations, anions and gases, the exact observations the scheme credits, and the write-up skills the paper rewards: method, apparatus choice, tables, graphs, anomalies and improvements. Which practical route the school entered your child for is established before anything begins.

  • The test, the reagent and the observation learned as exact text
  • Flame-test colours and precipitate colours drilled on recall
  • Titration readings, concordance and anomaly handling practised
  • Improvement answers structured, since they decide most of this paper

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ajman

01

The mole chain, read line by line the way it is marked

Most chemistry calculations in 0620 are the same chain in different clothing. A mass or a volume and a concentration go in, moles come out, a ratio from the balanced equation converts those moles to moles of something else, and then a mass, a volume or a concentration comes back out. Partial credit is awarded along that chain, which means a student who breaks at step three still collects steps one and two, and a student who writes only a final answer collects almost nothing.

Scoring a script this way locates the break precisely. Candidates who cannot start are usually missing molar mass fluency rather than the mole concept. Candidates who start well and fail at the ratio have not used the balanced equation, and often have not balanced it. Candidates who complete the chain and still lose a mark are nearly always losing it on units, on significant figures, or on answering in grams when the question asked for kilograms.

Those three break points need three different fortnights, and none of them is a general weakness in chemistry. The repair for molar mass is arithmetic drill. The repair for the ratio step is a rule written at the top of every answer until it is automatic. The repair for the final-line losses is the cheapest of all: a habit of reading the question's units back before writing the answer. Scoring the chain turns a vague instruction to work on calculations into a specific one.

02

Equations: balancing, charges and state symbols as separate marks

Equation writing is credited in pieces, and students who treat it as one task lose the pieces they did not notice. A symbol equation earns credit for correct formulae and for being balanced, and those are separable: a correctly balanced equation with a wrong formula collects neither, while correct formulae that are unbalanced collect one. State symbols are credited where the question asks for them and are a common silent omission, particularly in precipitation reactions where they carry the meaning.

Ionic equations at Extended add two more failure points. Charges must be right, and spectator ions must be removed rather than kept, and candidates frequently do one without the other. Half equations in electrolysis are the strictest case: the electrons must appear on the correct side and must balance the charge, and a half equation that is chemically sensible but electronically unbalanced earns nothing even though the chemistry behind it is understood.

The reason this belongs in a plan rather than being left to incidental practice is frequency. Equations appear in stoichiometry, electrolysis, energetics, acids and bases, metals and organic chemistry, which is most of the syllabus. A student who becomes reliable at writing them recovers marks in every one of those topics, so three sessions on equation discipline typically return more than three sessions on any single topic area. There is a diagnostic shortcut here for a parent reading a marked script at home. Find every equation on the paper and check only two things: whether the formulae are right and whether the coefficients balance. If the formulae are wrong, the problem is further back, in bonding and valency, and the equations are a symptom. If the formulae are right and the balancing is not, the repair is a fortnight of drill and nothing more.

Qualitative analysis: the test, the observation, the exact words

Qualitative analysis is the most learnable body of marks in 0620 and the one most often left to intuition. The syllabus sets out tests for cations, anions and gases, and the examiner credits the observation in particular terms: a white precipitate soluble in excess is a different answer from a white precipitate insoluble in excess, and the distinction decides which ion the candidate has identified. A paraphrase that captures the idea without the detail scores less than a sentence a student has learned verbatim.

Two habits recover these marks. The first is separating observation from conclusion. The question usually asks what is seen; a candidate who answers with the name of the ion has skipped the credited part. The second is colour precision. Green, red-brown, light blue and off-white are distinct answers in the scheme, and a student who has never seen the precipitate needs to learn the words rather than guess from a textbook photograph, which is entirely possible and is how most candidates in this market actually learn them.

The table below is a working reference for the standard tests, and it should be checked against the notes for qualitative analysis in the syllabus for your child's exam year at cambridgeinternational.org, because the required set is specified there and is occasionally revised. Cambridge's own documents are referenced and linked rather than reproduced; what appears here is a teaching summary, not a copy of the board's material. For a candidate with limited laboratory time, learning this table to recall is one of the few places in the syllabus where a few hours of memorisation converts almost directly into marks.

04

The practical component and the titration write-up

A fifth of the 0620 grade sits in the practical component, taken either as a practical test in the school laboratory or as a written alternative at a desk. Both carry the same weight and the school decides which when it enters candidates. Many Ajman families do not know which route applies until a mock arrives in an unfamiliar format, and buying practical preparation before establishing the route is a reliable way to waste a block of sessions.

For the written alternative, almost everything that is marked can be taught at a distance. Apparatus choice and why one measuring instrument suits a volume better than another. Designing a results table before readings are taken, with units in the headings. Describing a method precisely enough to be repeated. Identifying anomalies and saying what to do about them. And the improvement question, which decides a surprising share of this paper and rewards a rehearsed structure rather than invention.

Titration deserves naming separately, because it is where chemistry's practical marks concentrate. The credited points are the reading precision, the concordance requirement across repeats, the use of the mean of concordant titres rather than of all readings, and the calculation that follows. Candidates who understand titration perfectly lose marks by averaging a rough titre in with the accurate ones. That is a write-up rule, not a laboratory skill, and it can be drilled over a shared screen until it is automatic. The same is true of the anomaly question, where the credited answer identifies the reading, says why it is suspect and says what to do with it rather than simply labelling it odd.

05

Organic chemistry: taught last, examined in full

Organic chemistry is the strand that most distorts a mock result. In nearly every scheme of work it is taught in the final months, so a January mock either omits it or tests a fraction of it, and the mark that comes home is therefore not evidence about a third of the subject. Families read it as a total and plan accordingly, which is how a household ends up paying for revision of content the student already holds while the untaught strand stays untouched.

The strand itself is well suited to short, intense work because it is highly structured. Families of compounds with shared functional groups, a small number of reaction types, and a set of conditions attached to each. Fractional distillation, alkanes and substitution, alkenes and addition with the bromine-water test, alcohols by fermentation and by the catalytic route, carboxylic acids, esters, and polymers and macromolecules at Extended. Each of those is a block with a predictable question shape.

The scheduling consequence matters more than the content advice. Organic work should be timed to arrive with or just after the school's teaching rather than months before it, because taught-then-consolidated retains and consolidated-then-taught does not. For an Ajman family planning a Year 11 budget, that usually means the organic block belongs in the spring rather than in the autumn, and the autumn money is better spent on the calculation strand that everything else depends on. There is one exception worth naming. Where a student intends to take chemistry further, the organic reasoning is worth meeting early even at the cost of some retention, because the Diploma and A Level courses treat functional-group behaviour as assumed language rather than as new content.

06

A strand scoreboard beats a percentage

The record kept here is a scoreboard rather than a score. For each timed paper, the available marks are divided into physical, inorganic and organic chemistry plus the practical and analysis content, and the student's marks are recorded against each. A single line per paper, four or five numbers, and a date. It takes a few minutes to produce and it answers the question a percentage cannot: which strand moved.

What it typically shows across a term is uneven progress that would be invisible in a total. Physical chemistry climbing steadily because the calculation chain is being drilled. Inorganic flat, because it was already reasonable. Organic rising sharply at the point the school teaches it. A total mark would show a modest, gradual improvement and would tell a family nothing about whether their money was working.

It also makes the uncomfortable conversations possible. If physical chemistry has not moved after six weeks of calculation work, the approach is wrong and should change rather than being funded for longer. If organic is still blank in March, the problem is coverage rather than capability and the honest advice may be to prioritise the two strands that can still be secured. No provider can promise a particular grade, and the scoreboard is what allows a parent to judge the claim for themselves. A last practical note. The scoreboard works only if the papers are comparable, which means timed, at the entered tier, and marked against the published criteria rather than generously. A sympathetically marked paper produces a flattering line and destroys the only record a family has.

07

The cost of a mark, and how to read the published bands

The most useful way to read a tutoring rate is to divide it by what it is supposed to move. A block of eight sessions aimed at the calculation chain is a defined purchase with a measurable output: the strand score on a timed paper before and after. A nine-month general arrangement is not, which is why the same monthly figure feels expensive in one framing and reasonable in the other. Begin with the block, measure it, and extend only if the number moved.

With that framing, the published bands are easier to place. Budget and university-student online tuition is advertised from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik publishing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from about AED 33 to 52; that band suits routine and homework supervision rather than strand-specific repair. Qualified online subject tutors publish roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE tuition from AED 150, and that is where syllabus-accurate chemistry marking sits. Named IB and IGCSE specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, and premium or examiner-led tuition reaches AED 500 to 650 and above, with BartyED publishing AED 650.

In-home visits run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500. On monthly packages, the market shows AED 799 a month for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits. Every figure here was published by the named provider and collected in October 2026; they are market rates rather than an IB Gram price list, and any provider should be asked for the date and source of its own.

08

What a chemistry tutor does with school write-ups

0620 has no coursework, so there is no portfolio for anyone to complete on a student's behalf. What exists is school work: practical write-ups, investigations, problem sets and mocks that a teacher may collect and grade towards a report. The boundary is the same one that governs assessed work throughout the system, and it is worth stating because one operator found in this market sells completed assessed work outright, which is an academic-integrity breach that exposes the student to malpractice proceedings.

A tutor may teach how a titration write-up is structured, work through a parallel calculation that is not the set question, explain why a conclusion does not follow from a set of titres, and mark the student's own work against the published criteria while naming each forfeited mark. A tutor does not produce the write-up a student hands in. In a strand-scored plan this is structural rather than decorative: a scoreboard built from somebody else's chemistry measures nothing and predicts nothing.

Materials follow the same rule. Cambridge syllabuses, past papers, mark schemes and grade thresholds belong to Cambridge, are published on its own site, and are referenced and linked rather than reproduced or distributed as downloads. No tutor here is described as a Cambridge examiner unless that status can be evidenced, because examiner status is widely used in this market to imply access to marking standards and paper content that nobody outside the board holds. For an Ajman parent the practical test is short. Ask a prospective tutor what they would do with a write-up your child brings to a session, and listen for whether the answer involves marking it or improving it.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ajman

What differs across Ajman for a chemistry family is how much laboratory time the school can give and whether written work gets produced at home. These notes are about those, because both show up in the practical component.

Al Nuaimiya

Central Ajman, home to several of the emirate's longest-running campuses with the most settled science departments. Candidates here are more likely to have seen the standard precipitates, which changes how qualitative analysis is taught: recognition first, wording second.

Al Rashidiya

Older Ajman near the commercial strip. Apartment living predominates, so the constraint is a quiet desk rather than a commute, and chemistry sessions that require written equations need a surface and a decent light more than they need space.

Al Jurf

Mixed residential near the university area, with many households running children across different curricula. A child on a co-ordinated science route and a sibling on separate chemistry need different papers, and only the entry documents settle which is which.

Al Mowaihat

Inland villa communities with long school runs. Students here arrive home late, and the mole chain is the worst possible content to attempt with a tired student, so calculation work is better placed early in a session than at the end of one.

Al Rawda

Established villa and apartment districts with school choices spread across Ajman and Sharjah. Where a child attends a Sharjah campus, that school sits under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves curricula and assessment methods in that emirate.

Al Yasmeen

Newer development towards the southern edge of the emirate. Separate-science chemistry specialists are scarce locally, and qualitative analysis wording is precisely the content a generalist tutor tends to approximate, so syllabus experience matters more than proximity.

Emirates City and Al Alia

High-rise towers near the Sharjah boundary with a young, largely expatriate population. Parents here commonly work in Dubai and return after 7pm, which pushes sessions late and makes setting written work for the following day more productive than for the same night.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Establish the tier and the practical route

Two facts decide what any plan can achieve: whether your child is entered for Core or Extended, since a Core entry caps the certificate at grade C, and whether the practical component is the practical test or the written alternative. Both are on the entry documents and both are worth having in writing from the school before any hours are bought.

  2. 02

Score the strands in the free 50-minute trial

The trial is a working session. The student attempts a mole calculation, an equation set and a qualitative-analysis question, and the tutor marks it live against the published criteria, recording marks separately for physical, inorganic and practical content. That scoreboard is the plan, and it usually names one strand rather than three. No payment is arranged before it happens.

  3. 03

Buy the calculation strand first, as a defined block

For most Extended candidates the first purchase is six to ten sessions on the mole chain and everything downstream of it, because that strand is marked line by line and partial credit is recoverable step by step. It is a block with a measurable output rather than an open arrangement, and the before-and-after strand score is what justifies extending it.

  4. 04

Time the organic block to the school's teaching

Organic chemistry is taught last in nearly every scheme, so tuition that arrives months ahead of the class does not retain. The organic block is scheduled to land with or just after the school's coverage, which in practice usually means spring rather than autumn, and the autumn money goes to the strand everything else depends on.

  5. 05

Keep one line per timed paper

Each timed paper adds a single line to the record: date, marks by strand, marks available by strand. Nothing more elaborate. That is what shows which strand moved and which did not, and it is what makes the week-six conversation a factual one rather than an impression. If a strand has not moved, the approach changes rather than the hours increasing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The script is scored by strand, not by paper

Physical, inorganic and organic chemistry fail independently and a total mark averages across exactly the division that would tell a parent what to buy. Scoring a marked paper strand by strand usually names one target rather than three, and it turns a vague instruction to improve at chemistry into a defined block of work.

Calculations are marked line by line

The mole chain awards partial credit at each step, so sessions mark each line rather than the final answer. That locates the break precisely: molar mass fluency, the ratio step, or the units on the last line. Three different repairs, three different fortnights, and none of them a general weakness in the subject.

Qualitative analysis is taught as exact text

The scheme credits specific observations, and a white precipitate soluble in excess is a different answer from one insoluble in excess. These marks are learnable verbatim, which matters in a market where many candidates have had limited laboratory time, and they appear in both the theory papers and the practical component.

Organic work is timed to the school

Teaching organic chemistry months before the class reaches it does not retain, and a January mock that omits it is not evidence about a third of the subject. The organic block is scheduled to arrive with the school's coverage, which is also the cheapest sequencing for a family budgeting across a Year 11.

Rates are read as a cost per mark moved

A defined block with a measured before-and-after strand score can be judged; an open monthly arrangement cannot. Every AED figure on this page was published by a named provider and collected in October 2026, and they are market rates rather than an IB Gram price list.

The limits are stated before the first session

Lessons are online, one-to-one and on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to Ajman addresses, holds no Cambridge or Ministry of Education accreditation, does not supervise apparatus in a school laboratory, and does not produce work a student will submit. In-home figures here are the market's published prices, quoted for comparison.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ajman: your questions answered

Why is my daughter good at chemistry in class but weak on the paper?+

Usually because the paper rewards three different performances and her strength sits in one of them. Inorganic recall often holds up well in class discussion while the calculation strand collapses under timed conditions, and organic chemistry may not have been taught yet. Scoring a marked script strand by strand separates those in about forty minutes, and the result normally names one target rather than three. A percentage cannot do this, because it averages across exactly the division that would tell you what to work on, which is why the first session produces a scored paper rather than a plan.

Where exactly do students lose marks in mole calculations?+

At identifiable steps rather than wholesale, which is why calculations are marked line by line. Three break points recur. Students who cannot start are usually missing molar mass fluency, particularly with brackets and water of crystallisation. Students who start well and fail at the ratio have not used, or not balanced, the equation. Students who complete the chain and still drop a mark lose it on units, on significant figures, or on answering in grams where kilograms were asked. Those are three unrelated repairs, and identifying which one applies is worth more than a term of general calculation practice.

How do I make sure she learns the qualitative analysis answers properly?+

Treat them as text to be learned rather than as chemistry to be reasoned. The scheme credits particular observations, and the detail decides the mark: a white precipitate soluble in excess identifies a different ion from one insoluble in excess, and green against red-brown separates iron(II) from iron(III). Two habits recover most of these marks. Answer the question that was asked, which is usually what is seen rather than which ion it is. And learn the colour words exactly, because approximations like blue for light blue are commonly not credited. Confirm the required test set at cambridgeinternational.org for her exam year.

Which practical paper is my son entered for in chemistry?+

Check the entry documents, because the two routes need different preparation and both carry a fifth of the grade. One is a practical test taken in the school laboratory with apparatus; the other is a written paper about experiments sat at a desk. The school decides when it enters candidates, and in Ajman many families discover the answer only when a mock arrives in an unfamiliar format. Ask the head of science or the exams officer in writing, then confirm the component structure for your son's exam year at cambridgeinternational.org before buying any practical block.

Can titration technique be taught without a laboratory?+

The marked part of it, yes. Candidates rarely lose titration marks through poor handling of a burette; they lose them by recording readings to the wrong precision, by failing the concordance requirement across repeats, by averaging a rough titre in with the accurate ones, and by mishandling the calculation that follows. Every one of those is a write-up rule that can be drilled over a shared screen until it is automatic. What a tutor cannot do is stand in an Ajman school laboratory, and any provider implying otherwise should be questioned closely about what the session actually involves.

Why was organic chemistry missing from the mock paper?+

Because it is taught last in nearly every scheme of work, and the mock is set on what has been covered. That has two consequences worth planning around. A January mock mark is not evidence about roughly a third of the subject, so reading it as a total will misdirect your spending towards content the student may already hold. And the organic block should be timed to arrive with or just after the school's teaching rather than months before, because taught-then-consolidated retains and the reverse order does not.

What should a chemistry progress record actually show?+

One line per timed paper: the date, the marks available by strand, and the marks taken by strand, covering physical, inorganic and organic chemistry plus the practical and analysis content. Nothing more elaborate. That record shows uneven progress a total would hide: calculations climbing while inorganic stays flat and organic rises sharply once the school teaches it. Refuse a percentage with no denominator, a star rating not traceable to countable dated reviews, and any predicted grade presented as a commitment, because nobody can guarantee an outcome in this subject or any other.

Does a Core chemistry entry limit what tuition can do?+

Yes, and establishing it is the first job. Core candidates sit the Core multiple-choice and theory papers, and the certificate is capped at grade C regardless of how much is spent. Extended candidates sit the Extended papers with the full grade range available. A secure grade C may be exactly the right outcome for a particular student, but paying specialist rates in hope of an A on a Core entry is buying something the entry cannot award. Ask the school in writing which tier your child is entered for and when that decision is made.

Is separate chemistry the same as the co-ordinated science my child takes?+

No. Co-ordinated Sciences covers chemistry alongside physics and biology to a reduced depth, produces one or two grades rather than three, and has a practical component spanning all three subjects. A student on that route is not sitting 0620, so tuition built on 0620 past papers covers material outside their specification. Read the subject line on the statement of entry rather than relying on how the course is described at home. In Ajman households with children at two campuses, this check is worth doing separately for each child.

How many sessions does the calculation strand usually take?+

Six to ten for an Extended candidate whose break point has been identified, with written work marked between sessions. That assumes the arithmetic underneath is sound; where molar mass fluency is the problem, add two sessions at the front, because a chain taught on shaky formula-mass work does not hold. The honest measure is the before-and-after strand score on a timed set rather than a feeling about progress. If the score has not moved after that block, the approach changes rather than the number of sessions increasing.

Is it worth paying for chemistry if my son only needs a pass?+

Often a small, defined amount is, and a large open arrangement is not. For a Core candidate aiming at a secure pass, the highest-return work is narrow: the reactivity series and other pure recall, equation discipline, the simplest end of the mole chain, and the qualitative observations, which are learnable text. That is a handful of sessions rather than a nine-month commitment. Spending the mid-band monthly figure for a year to secure a grade that four well-aimed blocks would reach is the commonest avoidable expense in this market.

How should I compare the hourly rates quoted to us in Ajman?+

Divide the rate by what it is supposed to move, and insist on a defined block rather than an open arrangement. Published bands put budget and university-student online tuition at roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300, in-home visits including travel at AED 180 to 500, named IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, and premium or examiner-led tuition at AED 500 to 650 and above. Those were collected from named providers in October 2026 and are market rates, not an IB Gram price list. Ask any provider for the date and source of its own figure.

Will a tutor write my daughter's practical write-up for her?+

No. A tutor may teach how a titration write-up is structured, work a parallel calculation that is not the set question, explain why a conclusion does not follow from a set of titres, and mark her own work against the published criteria while naming each forfeited mark. A tutor does not produce the write-up she submits. In a strand-scored plan that line is structural, because a scoreboard assembled from somebody else's chemistry measures nothing. One operator in this market sells completed assessed work outright; that is a malpractice risk for the student and nothing here resembles it.

Are past papers and mark schemes provided as downloads?+

No. Cambridge syllabuses, past papers, mark schemes and grade thresholds belong to Cambridge and are published on its own site, so they are referenced and linked in sessions rather than reproduced or handed out. Reproducing them is a copyright matter and, for unreleased material, a malpractice exposure. What a session does provide is teaching summaries, worked examples written for your child, and marking against the published criteria. Any provider offering a library of boards' materials as its selling point is offering something it is not entitled to distribute.

What if no separate-chemistry specialist is available at our hour?+

You will be told before anything is booked. Extended chemistry with practical-paper and qualitative-analysis experience is narrower than general science tutoring, and the post-7pm slots most Ajman commuting households need fill first. The options then are a different hour, a short wait for one to open, or a named specialist based outside the UAE teaching on Gulf Standard Time, disclosed in advance with the rate. What you will not be offered is a general science tutor presented as a chemistry specialist, which is the substitution this market makes most quietly.

Score the strands before you buy the hours

The first useful question about a chemistry grade is not how low it is but which third of the subject produced it. Send your child's most recent marked paper and the entry documents showing the tier and the practical route, then take the free 50-minute trial lesson. That session scores a short timed set by strand, marks the mole chain line by line, and tests a qualitative-analysis answer against the wording the scheme credits. The result is usually one target rather than three, with a measurable before-and-after. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
