Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 Tutor in Ajman

A Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 tutor in Ajman is almost always hired on a feeling rather than on evidence: the writing is not good enough and nobody can say precisely why. 0500 awards reading marks and writing marks separately, and a script that is strong on one and weak on the other needs a completely different term from one that is weak on both. This page separates them and tracks band movement across marked drafts. Lessons are one-to-one over live video.

  • Reading marks and writing marks scored separately on every piece
  • Band movement tracked across three marked drafts, not asserted
  • Composition marked for content and structure apart from style and accuracy

0500 marks reading and writing separately, and so should the diagnosis

English is the subject families find hardest to diagnose, because the feedback they receive is about quality rather than about marks. A teacher writes that the work needs more depth, or that the expression is awkward, and a parent has no way to convert that into a plan. The examination is far more specific than the feedback. 0500 splits its credit between reading and writing, and inside the writing it splits again between content and structure on one hand and style and accuracy on the other. Those divisions are where the diagnosis lives.

A worked example makes the point. Two Ajman students bring home the same grade 5. The first understands the texts well, selects the right evidence, and then writes about it in sentences that lose the style and accuracy marks: comma splices, repeated sentence openings, vocabulary that reaches for effect and misses. The second writes fluently and misses the reading marks entirely, because the summary leaves out half the credited points and the writer's-effect answer explains what a phrase means rather than what it does.

The first student needs sentence-level work: a fortnight on punctuation of complex sentences, then deliberate variation. The second needs reading work: selection, summary discipline and analysis of effect. Both are four to six weeks, both are measurable, and neither is 'more reading at home', which is the advice most of these families have already been given and already tried. Separating the two halves of the mark is what turns a vague instruction into a specific one.

There is a structural question to settle first in Ajman, because it is decided by the school and it changes everything. 0500 is English as a First Language; 0510 and 0511 are English as a Second Language and are different qualifications with different papers. And the second half of the 0500 grade can come either from an examined paper of directed writing and composition or from a coursework portfolio, depending on which component the school enters. Confirm the entry, the components and their mark allocations for your child's exam year at cambridgeinternational.org.

Everything below is built on marked drafts rather than on impressions. There is a breakdown of the reading paper by question type, an account of where the eighty marks sit on the writing paper, a draft-cycle record showing what three marked versions of one piece reveal, and a plain statement of what a tutor may and may not do with a portfolio piece. Tuition is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses in Ajman, because home visiting is a service it runs only in India. In-home rates quoted here are the market's published prices, included so the comparison is honest.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

English sits differently from the other IGCSE subjects because the skills it credits carry into every other paper a student sits. The notes below describe each stage and what evidence shows it is secure.

Cambridge IGCSE English as a First Language 0500

A two-year course assessed by a reading paper of 80 marks carrying half the grade, with the other half from either a directed writing and composition paper of 80 marks or a coursework portfolio, depending on the school's entry. The reading paper mixes short-answer comprehension, analysis of a writer's use of language, summary, and an extended response written in a given voice, with each question printing its own reading and writing split. Confirm the current structure at cambridgeinternational.org.

In Ajman the decisive variable is which component the school entered for the second half of the grade. A portfolio route changes the shape of the year entirely: deadlines fall inside the school rather than at a national examination, the work is drafted over months, and the boundary around what help is permitted becomes the single most important thing a family understands. Ask the head of English which component the entry names.

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language 0510 and 0511

A different qualification for students for whom English is an additional language, with different papers, different mark schemes and a speaking component in one of its variants. It is not an easier version of 0500; it assesses different things. A student entered for the second-language route who is tutored on first-language past papers will spend weeks on analysis tasks that their specification does not set.

This mix-up is common in the northern emirates, where many households use two or three languages and where a school may enter different students in the same year group for different codes. The statement of entry carries the code and settles it. Where a student has been entered for 0500 and is genuinely working at second-language level, that is a conversation to have with the school early rather than a problem to tutor around.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English 0475

The companion subject many Ajman students take alongside 0500, examined on set texts rather than unseen passages. The analytical habits overlap usefully: a student who learns to write about a writer's choices in 0500 writes better literature essays, and a student who learns to quote precisely for literature selects better evidence in the reading paper. The content, though, is entirely separate and needs its own hours.

Where a family is funding both, the efficient order is usually 0500 first. The reading and writing skills transfer into literature essays, whereas set-text knowledge transfers nowhere. For a household supporting two children, that sequencing decision is worth more than any discount on an hourly rate.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

0500 credits a small number of distinct skills, repeatedly. The notes below name each one, what secure work looks like, and the error that recurs when it is absent.

Short-answer comprehension and selection

Paper 1 Reading

Locating explicit information and short inferences in a passage, usually for one or two marks each. Secure work answers in the question's own terms and stops. The recurring loss is a correct answer buried in a paragraph of unnecessary context, which wastes the time the later long questions need and occasionally obscures the creditable point entirely.

Analysis of a writer's use of language

Paper 1 Reading

Selecting powerful words and phrases and explaining their effect. Secure work quotes short, selects precisely, and says what the image does to the reader rather than what it means. The reliable loss is paraphrase: explaining that a phrase describes a storm, where the mark required the connotation the image carries and its effect.

Summary writing

Paper 1 Reading

Identifying the points a question asks for and expressing them concisely in the student's own words. Credited twice over: once for the points selected and once for the concision and control of the writing. The usual failure is a summary that reproduces the passage's phrasing, which can score the reading points and lose the writing credit entirely.

Extended response in a given voice

Paper 1 Reading

Writing as a character or a participant, using details from the passage to develop a response. Secure work takes details from across the whole text and develops them rather than listing them, and holds the required voice and register throughout. Students lose marks by retelling the passage in the first person without adding development.

Directed writing

Paper 2 Section A

Reading one or more short texts and writing in a specified form for a specified audience, such as a letter, a speech or an article. Marks are split between reading, for the use made of the material, and writing, for the form, register and effectiveness. The recurring loss is a well-written piece that ignores half the source material.

Composition: descriptive writing

Paper 2 Section B

A description rather than a story, which is the distinction most candidates miss. Secure work builds a place or a moment through specific sensory detail and controlled structure, with very little plot. The error is a narrative with description attached, which is marked against the descriptive criteria and loses the content and structure credit.

Composition: narrative writing

Paper 2 Section B

A short story with a shape that fits the time available. Secure work is narrow in scope, one incident rather than a saga, with deliberate structure and a controlled ending. Candidates lose marks by attempting a plot that needs three thousand words, which produces an unfinished piece and a collapsed ending however good the opening was.

Style and accuracy as a separate band

Paper 2 and the portfolio route

Sentence control, punctuation, vocabulary choice and consistency of tense and register, marked apart from content and structure. This is the band that moves slowest and the one most responsive to targeted work: comma splices, repeated sentence openings and overreaching vocabulary are specific, countable faults that can be drilled rather than discussed.

Register, audience and form

Paper 1 and Paper 2

Matching the writing to the stated reader and purpose, whether a speech to a school assembly or a letter to a council. Secure work sustains the register from the first sentence to the last. The usual loss is a piece that opens in the correct register and drifts into general essay prose by the third paragraph.

Planning under time pressure

Paper 1 and Paper 2

Both papers run to two hours with long questions at the end, and a candidate who over-writes early arrives at the highest-value task with fifteen minutes left. Secure practice shows a short written plan and a time budget per question. This is examination technique rather than English, and it is frequently the cheapest mark recovery available.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of running 0500 support, separated by which half of the mark the marked work says is failing. All three run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and each begins with a free 50-minute trial lesson that produces one marked piece.

Weekly one-to-one with a marked piece each week

A fixed slot producing one piece of writing a week, marked against the published criteria with reading and writing credit recorded separately. The marking happens between sessions and the session is spent on the redraft, which is the opposite of the usual arrangement and the reason the band moves. Over a term the record shows band movement per criterion rather than a general sense of improvement.

  • One piece of writing produced and marked every week
  • Marking against the criteria happens outside the paid hour
  • Reading and writing credit recorded separately on every piece
  • Band positions compared monthly against the first marked piece

A reading-paper block

Six to ten sessions aimed only at Paper 1: selection, the writer's-effect question, summary discipline and the extended response in a given voice. This is the block to buy when a student writes fluently and loses the reading marks, which is a surprisingly common profile and one that general English tuition tends to miss because the writing looks competent.

  • Opens with a full timed reading paper, marked to the criteria
  • Writer's-effect answers rebuilt around effect rather than meaning
  • Summary practised against the points the question actually asks for
  • Closes with a second timed paper for a like-for-like comparison

A style and accuracy block

A narrow block on the band that moves slowest: sentence control, punctuation of complex sentences, deliberate variation of openings, and vocabulary chosen for precision rather than for impressiveness. The work is countable rather than impressionistic, which is what makes it teachable in a fortnight where general advice about expression has failed for two years.

  • Comma splices and run-ons identified and counted on the student's own work
  • Sentence openings varied deliberately rather than instinctively
  • Vocabulary tested for precision, with overreaching words removed
  • Tense and register consistency checked across a whole piece

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ajman

01

Paper 1: four question types, four unrelated skills

The reading paper is not one task repeated. It mixes short-answer comprehension that rewards brevity, an analysis question that rewards close selection and the language of effect, a summary that rewards concision in the student's own words, and an extended response that rewards sustained voice and development. A student can be strong in two of those and weak in two, and a total mark out of eighty hides that completely.

Each question also prints its own split between reading credit and writing credit, which is the detail most candidates never register. A summary earns points for what was selected and separate credit for how concisely it was expressed, so a student who lists the right points in the passage's own phrasing has scored half of what was available. An extended response in a given voice earns credit for the use made of the text and separate credit for the quality of the writing.

Reading the allocation before answering is therefore a skill in itself, and it is one of the cheapest to teach. A two-mark question gets two points and no context. A fifteen-mark analysis question gets close selection across both named paragraphs rather than three general observations. Confirm the current question-by-question allocation on the specimen paper for your child's exam year at cambridgeinternational.org, because this is the kind of detail that is revised and that a tutor working from memory gets wrong. For a parent reading a marked paper at home, there is a quick test of which question type is the problem. Find the two longest questions and compare the marks taken there with the marks taken on the short ones. A script that scores well early and badly late is almost always a timing script rather than a comprehension one.

Paper 2: where the eighty marks actually sit

Where a school enters candidates for the examined route, the second half of the grade comes from a paper of two tasks, each worth forty marks. Section A is directed writing: reading one or more short texts and writing in a specified form for a specified audience, with the forty marks split between reading credit for the use made of the material and writing credit for form, register and effectiveness. Section B is a composition, chosen from descriptive or narrative options.

The composition split is the part families find most useful to know. Content and structure are marked separately from style and accuracy, which means a student with vivid ideas and uncontrolled sentences loses a defined block of marks, and a student with careful prose and no shape loses a different one. Both are repairable and the repairs are unrelated, so a plan that treats composition as one undifferentiated skill will usually improve the half that was already working.

Descriptive and narrative also fail differently and the distinction is worth teaching explicitly. A description is a place or a moment built from specific detail with almost no plot; candidates who write a story with description attached are marked against the descriptive criteria and lose content credit. A narrative needs a scope that fits the time, which in practice means one incident, deliberately structured, with a controlled ending rather than a rushed one. Confirm the current section structure and allocations for the exam year at cambridgeinternational.org.

The coursework portfolio route, and the line that matters most

Some schools take the second half of the 0500 grade through a coursework portfolio rather than an examined paper. That changes the shape of the year. Deadlines become internal and are set by the school rather than by a series date, the writing is produced over months with drafting built in, and the question of what help is permitted moves from theoretical to urgent. Families on this route should ask the head of English for the deadline schedule in September rather than discovering it in February.

The boundary is clear and worth stating in full. A tutor may teach the form, analyse published examples, explain what the criteria reward, mark the student's own draft against those criteria, and say precisely which band a piece currently sits in and what would move it. A tutor does not write any part of a piece that will be submitted, does not rewrite sentences into the student's draft, and does not supply text to be adapted. Suggested wording handed to a student becomes the student's submitted work, which is exactly the thing that must not happen.

This is not a compliance paragraph; it is the condition that makes the evidence usable. The whole value of three marked drafts is that the band movement belongs to the student, so the mark predicted from the third draft is a mark they can produce again. A portfolio improved by somebody else predicts nothing and exposes the student to malpractice proceedings. One operator found in this market sells completed assessed work outright, and nothing in this arrangement resembles it.

04

Style and accuracy: the band that moves slowest

Of everything 0500 credits, style and accuracy is the band that families have usually been failing to move for the longest, because the advice attached to it is almost always too general to act on. 'Vary your sentences' and 'use more sophisticated vocabulary' are not instructions. The band responds instead to a small number of countable faults, identified on the student's own writing and corrected until the correction is automatic.

Four faults account for most of it. Comma splices, where two complete sentences are joined with a comma, which is the single most common accuracy error in this market. Repetitive sentence openings, where six consecutive sentences begin with the subject. Overreaching vocabulary, where a word has been chosen for impressiveness and used slightly wrongly, which costs more than a plain accurate word would have. And tense drift inside a narrative, which is invisible to the writer and obvious to a marker.

The method is counting rather than discussing. Take one piece of the student's own writing, mark every instance of each fault, and give the number. A student who learns they produced eleven comma splices in six hundred words has something to act on in a way that 'work on your punctuation' never provides. The number falls over a fortnight, the band moves, and because the faults recur across every subject's written answers, the work pays back outside English as well. One caution on vocabulary, since it is the part parents most often try to fix themselves. Learning lists of impressive words makes this band worse rather than better, because a word used slightly outside its meaning costs more than the plain accurate word it replaced. Precision is what is credited, and precision comes from reading how a word is used rather than from memorising what it means.

05

The writer's-effect question, taught properly

This question is heavily taught and poorly understood, and it is where capable readers lose the most. The task asks for selection of powerful words and phrases and an explanation of their effect. The mark is not for identifying a technique and it is not for explaining what the phrase means. A student who writes that a metaphor compares the crowd to a river has described the device; the credit is for what that comparison makes the reader see or feel, and why that choice rather than another.

Three habits fix most of it. Quote short, because a long quotation usually contains the thing the student is not analysing. Choose language that carries connotation rather than language that happens to be dramatic, which is a judgement that improves quickly with marked practice. And write about the reader's experience in specific terms rather than saying the writing is effective or engaging, which are the two words that most reliably signal an answer with no analysis in it.

Marked practice is the only route here, and it has to be marked against the criteria rather than encouraged. A student who writes five of these answers and has each one marked with the credited points named will improve measurably; a student who writes twenty unmarked ones will get faster at producing the same answer. This is the clearest illustration of why marking time, not contact time, is the real cost in English tuition.

06

Three marked drafts, and what they show that one does not

The record kept here is a draft cycle. One piece of writing, three marked versions, with the band position recorded separately for content and structure and for style and accuracy at each stage. It is a small amount of bookkeeping and it answers questions a single mark cannot: whether the student can act on feedback, which of the two bands is actually stuck, and whether the problem is producing good writing or producing it under time pressure.

The patterns are informative. A piece that jumps a band between the first and second draft and stays there shows a student who can edit but not plan, which points at planning work. A piece that barely moves across three drafts shows feedback that is not specific enough to act on, which is the tutor's problem rather than the student's. And a strong third draft alongside weak timed work shows a student whose ceiling is fine and whose examination technique is not, which is a different and faster repair.

Set against timed pieces, the cycle gives a family two readings of the same student. The redrafted work shows what they are capable of; the timed work shows what they can produce in two hours. Both matter, because the examination rewards the second and the portfolio route rewards something closer to the first. Nobody can promise a particular grade, and a provider who offers one should be questioned closely; what a draft record offers instead is a view a parent can interpret without taking anybody's word for it.

07

Why English tuition costs what it does

English is priced in the same published AED bands as the sciences, and the work inside the hour is quite different. A maths or physics session can teach and assess inside the session itself. An English session cannot: the piece has to be written, then marked carefully against the criteria, with credited points named and faults counted, before the next session is worth having. That marking is the product, and it happens outside the hour a family is paying for.

So the question to ask any English tutor in this market is not the rate but what happens to the writing between sessions. The published bands put budget and university-student online tuition at roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik publishing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from about AED 33 to 52; at that level, criteria-based marking of a full composition is rarely included. Qualified online subject tutors publish roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE tuition from AED 150, and named IB and IGCSE specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. Premium or examiner-led tuition reaches AED 500 to 650 and above, with BartyED publishing AED 650.

In-home visits run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500. For English specifically the in-home premium buys very little that matters, because the work that moves the band is annotation on a page and a conversation about it, both of which happen as well over a shared screen. Every figure here was published by the named provider and collected in October 2026; they are market rates rather than an IB Gram price list, and any provider should be asked for the date and source of its own.

08

Reading at home: what helps and what does not

Every family on this page has been told to make their child read more, and for most of them it has not worked. The advice is not wrong, it is just imprecise. Volume of reading builds vocabulary and sentence rhythm over years, which is valuable and far too slow to help a Year 11 candidate in February. What moves a 0500 mark in weeks is reading of a particular kind, done in small amounts, with a pen.

Three things are worth doing. Read short non-fiction of the type the reading paper uses, and after each piece write two sentences on what the writer did to the reader rather than what the piece was about. Read the openings of published descriptive writing and copy the structure deliberately into a piece of the student's own. And re-read the student's own marked work, which almost nobody does and which is where the faults they keep repeating are most visible.

What does not help is volume alone, or reading chosen for difficulty rather than interest. A student grinding through a book they dislike produces no analysis and no enthusiasm. For households in Ajman where English is one of two or three languages used daily, the useful framing is not quantity of English input but deliberate attention to how a writer achieves an effect, which is a transferable habit and the thing the paper actually credits. There is also a small amount a parent can do without reading anything themselves. Ask the student to explain, out loud, what a writer was trying to make the reader feel in something they have just read. The answer takes ninety seconds, it needs no preparation from the parent, and it rehearses precisely the move the writer's-effect question is built on.

09

English marks carry into every other subject

Of all the IGCSE subjects, English is the one whose repairs pay back outside their own paper. The explain questions in physics, the six-mark reasoning answers in biology, the directed responses in business studies and the extended answers in history are all marked on whether the point is made clearly enough to be credited. A student who writes in comma-spliced sentences loses marks in those papers too, quietly, and nobody attributes it to English.

That has a budgeting consequence for an Ajman household supporting several subjects at once. Where money is limited and three subjects look weak, the style and accuracy work in English is often the purchase with the widest effect, because it improves the written answers in every other paper the student sits. It is rarely the purchase families choose, because English feels less urgent than a failing science, and it is frequently the one that moves the most marks in total.

The reverse also holds and is worth saying. A student whose English is secure and whose science marks are weak does not have an English problem, and English tuition will not fix it. Separating those cases is the point of marking reading and writing credit independently: it tells a parent whether the writing is the cause of the low marks elsewhere or simply the thing that is easiest to blame. There is a simple way to check which situation a household is in. Take a marked science or humanities answer and read it as a piece of writing: if the point is there but buried, the English work will help the whole timetable. If the point is absent, no amount of English tuition will supply it, and the money belongs in the subject that is actually short of content.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ajman

What differs across Ajman for an English family is usually the household's language mix and whether the school entered the first-language or second-language code. These notes are about that, because it determines which specification the tuition should follow.

Al Nuaimiya

Central Ajman with several long-established campuses that enter candidates for both English codes in the same year group. The first check here is the code on the statement of entry, because a sibling at the same school may be sitting a different specification.

Al Rashidiya

Older Ajman near the commercial strip, with a settled, long-resident population. Students here often read fluently and lose marks on the style and accuracy band rather than on comprehension, which is a sentence-level repair rather than a reading one.

Al Jurf

Mixed residential near the university area. Many households here use two or three languages daily, and the useful question is not which language is spoken at home but whether the student can sustain a register across four paragraphs under time pressure.

Al Rawda

Established villa and apartment districts with children at schools in both Ajman and Sharjah. A child at a Sharjah campus sits under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves curricula and assessment methods in that emirate, and portfolio deadlines follow that school's calendar.

Al Helio

Residential districts with a broad spread of school choices. Where a school runs the coursework portfolio route, the drafting deadlines are internal and parents rarely see them until a piece is overdue, so asking for the schedule in writing is worth doing in September.

Al Yasmeen

Newer development towards the southern edge. English specialists who mark against the published criteria rather than giving general feedback are scarce locally, and marking quality is the whole of the value in this subject, so syllabus experience matters more than proximity.

Emirates City and Al Alia

High-rise towers near the Sharjah boundary with a young, largely expatriate population. Parents here often work in Dubai and return after 7pm; written work for English is best set with a day's turnaround, since a composition produced at 9pm is not representative evidence.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the code and the component

Two facts from the entry documents decide the plan. Whether the entry is 0500 first language or a second-language code, since those are different qualifications with different papers. And whether the second half of the grade comes from the examined writing paper or from a coursework portfolio, since a portfolio route has internal deadlines and a much tighter boundary around permitted help.

  2. 02

Produce one marked piece in the free 50-minute trial

The trial is a working session. The student writes a short timed response and attempts a writer's-effect answer, and the tutor marks both against the published criteria, recording reading credit and writing credit separately and counting the accuracy faults by type. That record is the plan, and it usually points at one half of the mark rather than both. No payment is arranged beforehand.

  3. 03

Target the half that is actually failing

A student who reads well and writes inaccurately gets sentence-level work. A student who writes fluently and misses the reading marks gets selection, summary and effect work. Both are four to six weeks and both are measurable. What neither gets is general English tuition, which tends to strengthen whichever half was already working.

  4. 04

Mark between sessions, redraft inside them

Writing is set, marked against the criteria outside the paid hour with credited points named and faults counted, and the session itself is spent on the redraft. That ordering is what moves the band, and it is the reverse of the usual arrangement where the session is spent writing and the feedback is verbal and forgotten by Thursday.

  5. 05

Review the bands monthly, not the grade

Each month the band positions for content and structure and for style and accuracy are compared against the first marked piece, alongside the counted faults. If one band has moved and the other has not, the work shifts to the stuck one. If neither has moved, the feedback was not specific enough and the approach changes rather than the hours increasing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Reading and writing credit are scored apart

0500 awards them separately and so does the diagnosis. A student strong on comprehension and weak on expression needs a different term from one who writes fluently and misses the summary points, and a total mark out of eighty hides exactly that distinction. Separating them usually names one half of the mark rather than both.

Marking happens outside the paid hour

In English the marking is the product. A piece is written, marked against the published criteria with credited points named and accuracy faults counted, and the session is then spent on the redraft. When comparing rates in this market, what happens to the writing between sessions is a more useful question than the rate itself.

Accuracy faults are counted, not discussed

Comma splices, repeated sentence openings, overreaching vocabulary and tense drift are countable on a student's own page. A number falls over a fortnight in a way that 'work on your expression' has not in two years, and because those faults recur in every subject's written answers the work pays back beyond English.

The portfolio boundary is stated in full

Where a school uses the coursework route, a tutor teaches the form, marks drafts against the criteria and names the band and what would move it. No wording is supplied for a piece that will be submitted, because text handed to a student becomes the student's submitted work and that is the thing that must not happen.

Capability and timed performance are both measured

A redrafted piece shows what a student can produce; a timed piece shows what they can produce in two hours. The examined route rewards the second and the portfolio route rewards something closer to the first, so both are recorded rather than one being used to flatter the other.

The limits are published alongside the offer

Lessons are online, one-to-one and on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to Ajman addresses, holds no Cambridge or Ministry of Education accreditation, and does not write any part of work a student will submit. In-home figures quoted here are the market's published prices, included for comparison.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ajman: your questions answered

My son's English teacher says his work lacks depth. What does that mean in marks?+

Usually one of two quite different things, and the marked script says which. If the reading credit is low, the problem is selection and analysis: the writer's-effect answers explain what a phrase means rather than what it does, and the summary misses points the question asked for. If the reading credit is sound and the writing credit is low, the problem is expression: sentence control, punctuation of complex sentences and vocabulary precision. Those need unrelated terms of work. Ask for the mark broken into reading and writing rather than as a grade, because that single request reframes the whole conversation.

Is 0500 the same qualification as the English my daughter's friend takes?+

Not necessarily, and this is worth checking before buying anything. 0500 is English as a First Language. The codes 0510 and 0511 are English as a Second Language, with different papers, different mark schemes and a speaking component in one variant. Literature in English 0475 is a third, separate subject examined on set texts. Schools in Ajman commonly enter different students in the same year group for different codes. The statement of entry carries the code, and a student tutored on the wrong specification spends weeks on tasks their paper does not set.

What is the writer's-effect question actually asking for?+

What the language does to the reader, not what it means and not which device it is. A student who writes that a metaphor compares a crowd to a river has named the device and described the comparison; the credit is for what that choice makes the reader see or feel, and why that image rather than another. Three habits fix most of it: quote short, choose words that carry connotation rather than words that are merely dramatic, and avoid the words effective and engaging, which almost always signal an answer with no analysis in it. Marked practice against the criteria is the only route.

Why does my daughter lose marks on the summary when her points are right?+

Because the summary is credited twice and she is probably collecting only one half. There are marks for the points selected and separate marks for concision and control in her own words. A summary that identifies every required point while reproducing the passage's phrasing can score well on selection and lose the writing credit almost entirely. The repair is to separate the two in practice: list the points first, then write the summary without looking at the passage. It is a technique fix rather than a comprehension one, and it typically takes two or three marked attempts.

What is the difference between descriptive and narrative composition?+

A description builds a place or a moment through specific detail with almost no plot; a narrative tells a story. The commonest error is answering a descriptive title with a story that has description attached, which is then marked against the descriptive criteria and loses content and structure credit. For narrative, the usual failure is scope: a plot that needs three thousand words produces an unfinished piece and a collapsed ending however strong the opening was. One incident, deliberately structured, with a controlled ending, is what the time allows.

How do I get the style and accuracy band to move?+

By counting faults on your child's own writing rather than discussing expression in general. Four faults account for most of this band in this market: comma splices, where two complete sentences are joined with a comma; repetitive sentence openings; vocabulary chosen for impressiveness and used slightly wrongly; and tense drift inside a narrative. Mark every instance on one piece and give the number. A student who learns they produced eleven comma splices in six hundred words has something to act on, and the count falls over a fortnight in a way that general advice has not in two years.

My son's school uses coursework for English. What can a tutor do?+

Teach the form, analyse published examples, explain what the criteria reward, mark his own draft against those criteria, and tell him which band the piece sits in and what would move it. What a tutor does not do is supply wording for a piece that will be submitted, rewrite his sentences into his draft, or provide text to be adapted, because anything handed over becomes his submitted work. That boundary is also what makes the evidence worth having: a band position reached on his own writing is one he can reach again, and one improved by somebody else predicts nothing.

When are the portfolio deadlines, and who sets them?+

The school sets them, which is why families on this route are so often caught out. Unlike an examined paper with a published series date, portfolio deadlines are internal and sit inside the school's own calendar, usually spread across the year with drafting built in. Ask the head of English for the schedule in writing in September rather than discovering it when a piece is overdue. For Ajman households with a child at a Sharjah campus, note that the deadlines follow that school's calendar, and that school sits under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves assessment methods in that emirate.

Will reading more books fix my daughter's English grade?+

Over years, yes; over a term, no, and that is why the advice keeps failing. Volume of reading builds vocabulary and sentence rhythm slowly. What moves a 0500 mark in weeks is reading of a specific kind in small amounts with a pen: short non-fiction of the type the reading paper uses, followed by two written sentences on what the writer did to the reader rather than what the piece was about. Re-reading her own marked work is the other high-value habit, because the faults she keeps repeating are most visible there and almost nobody looks.

How many sessions does it take to move a band in English?+

Four to six weeks of weekly work with marking in between, for one band, where the target has been identified. The style and accuracy band moves on counted faults and tends to shift first. Content and structure moves on planning and takes slightly longer, because a student has to learn to shape a piece before writing it rather than discovering the shape halfway through. A plan that aims at both bands at once usually moves neither. Nobody can promise a particular grade, and a provider offering one should be questioned closely.

Does paying more per hour get better English marking?+

Not reliably, and the rate is the wrong question. In English the marking is the product: a piece written, marked against the published criteria with credited points named and faults counted, and then redrafted in the session. The useful question is what happens to the writing between sessions. Published bands run roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget and university-student online tuition, AED 150 to 300 for qualified online subject tutors, and AED 200 to 450 and above for named specialists, with premium tuition at AED 500 to 650 and above. Those are market figures collected October 2026, not an IB Gram price list.

Is an in-home English tutor worth the extra cost in Ajman?+

Less than in most subjects, on the published numbers. In-home visits run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, and the work that actually moves an English band is annotation on a page plus a conversation about it. Both of those happen as well over a shared screen as across a table, and screen sharing makes the annotations easier to keep for the monthly record. The in-home premium in this subject mostly buys presence, which some students genuinely need, rather than better marking.

Will English tuition help my son's marks in his other subjects?+

Often more than families expect. Explain questions in physics, reasoning answers in biology, directed responses in business studies and extended answers in history are all credited on whether the point is made clearly enough to be read as the point. A student writing in comma-spliced sentences loses marks in those papers too, and nobody attributes it to English. Where a household is choosing between three weak subjects on a limited budget, the accuracy work in English is frequently the purchase with the widest effect, even though it rarely feels like the urgent one.

How should we handle the timing on a two-hour English paper?+

With a written time budget at the top of the paper, because both 0500 papers put substantial questions at the end and the commonest structural failure is over-writing early. A short-answer question worth two marks receives two points and no context; the long analysis and extended-response questions receive the time their credit justifies. Practising this is examination technique rather than English, which makes it one of the cheapest mark recoveries available, and it shows up immediately in the difference between a student's redrafted work and their timed work.

What if no 0500 specialist is free in the slot we need?+

You will be told before anything is booked. First-language English at this level needs somebody who marks against the published criteria rather than giving general encouragement, which is a narrower group than general English tutoring, and the post-7pm slots most Ajman commuting households need fill first. The options are a different hour, a short wait for one to open, or a named specialist based outside the UAE teaching on Gulf Standard Time, disclosed in advance along with the rate. What you will not be offered is a second-language specialist presented as a 0500 tutor.

One marked piece tells you more than a term of reports

The quickest way to find out what is wrong with a 0500 grade is to have one piece of your child's writing marked properly: against the published criteria, with the reading credit and the writing credit recorded apart, and with the accuracy faults counted by type. Send the most recent marked work and the entry documents showing the code and which component the school uses for the second half of the grade, then take the free 50-minute trial lesson. That session produces one marked piece and names which half of the mark the work should target. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
