IB and IGCSE tutors for Khalifa City families

Most families who look for IB and IGCSE tutors in Khalifa City already know roughly what is wrong. The school is covering the course, the child is working, and something between the lesson and the examination is not happening. What nobody tells them is what closing that gap costs, in what order to spend, and which parts of it money cannot buy at all. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Khalifa City

What the school covers, what it cannot, and what closing the difference costs

Khalifa City is a large mainland community of villa plots and low-rise housing between the airport road and the city, with Khalifa City A and B and the newer edges running towards Al Raha and Mohammed Bin Zayed City. It has one of the densest school clusters in the emirate, across British, American and IB continuum routes, and households here tend to be settled rather than transient. Many have been in the same school for years.

That produces an unusually well-informed parent and an unusually specific question. The enquiries from this community are rarely about what the IB Diploma is or how IGCSE works. They are about value: how many hours, at what rate, for what outcome, and whether the thing being sold is the thing that is needed. Nobody in this market publishes the answers, which is the gap this page tries to close.

Start with the structure of the problem. A school week has a fixed number of taught periods per subject and those periods carry new content. Consolidation is set as homework and checked rather than taught. Everything after that — rehearsal, timed practice, drafting an assessed piece, reviewing a marked script for patterns — belongs to the student alone. That third category is substantial, and in an examined programme it is where the grade is largely decided.

There are three different gaps that live inside that third category, and conflating them is the most expensive mistake available to a parent. A technique gap means the student knows the content and loses marks in the writing of answers. A content gap means specific topics were never learned. A habit gap means the independent hours do not happen at all. They look identical on a report card and cost very different amounts to close.

The cheapest is the technique gap, which often moves within six to eight sessions because the fix is behavioural. The most expensive is the content gap across a two-year syllabus, which needs a term or more of teaching. The habit gap is the odd one out: it is cheap to diagnose, cheap to fix structurally, and almost impossible to fix with money alone, because the thing required is a protected window and a reviewed output rather than another paid hour.

What follows prices each of those honestly, compares six provider models on more than rate, lists the extras that quietly change a quoted figure, sets out how many hours different goals actually take, and says what no budget buys. Market rates are presented as the market's with each publisher named; they are not an IB Gram price list. Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, and IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses in the UAE — visiting tutors are a service we run only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Khalifa City households sit across the IB continuum, British and American routes, and the cost question looks different in each. Each note below is about where money is well spent in that programme.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects across Higher and Standard Level plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Each subject carries an internally assessed component against published criteria, submitted and moderated before external papers sat in one window. More of the result depends on self-managed work than in any other route, and the second year concentrates deadlines into an eight-week autumn.

This is the programme where households overspend most reliably, because six subjects and three core components create six or nine places to buy help. The spending that works is narrow: one or two components where the marks are most recoverable, usually a Higher Level paper and one internally assessed piece. The spending that does not work is a tutor per subject, which costs several times as much and dilutes the student's attention across the week.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Two-year externally examined courses, with Cambridge codes such as 0580 Mathematics and 0620 Chemistry and Pearson International GCSE codes such as 4MA1 and 4CH1. Cambridge mathematics and the separate sciences are tiered into Core and Extended, which fixes the available grade range before papers are sat. Eight to ten subjects are usually taken together.

With eight or more subjects running at once, the question in Khalifa City is almost always which one gets the hour. The answer is the subject where a grade change alters a sixth-form entry decision, not the subject with the lowest mark. A low mark in a subject the student will drop at sixteen is a poor place to spend, however uncomfortable it looks on a report.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, labelled A to D and scored 0 to 8 against task-specific rubrics, combining to a total out of 32 that converts to a grade from 1 to 7. The final year carries the Personal Project, an extended independent piece with its own criteria and interim deadlines set by the school.

Middle Years tutoring is the cheapest useful tutoring available in this community, because the purchase can be precise. Identify the criterion letter that is low across several subjects, buy six to eight sessions on that one skill, and several grades move together. A standing weekly subject lesson at this stage usually costs more and achieves less than a targeted block.

AmericanAges 14-18 · Grades 9-12

American curriculum and Advanced Placement

Continuous assessment across a grade point average, with Advanced Placement courses taken individually and examined separately on a 1 to 5 scale. Risk is distributed across a year, which rewards steady submission and does not build examination stamina. Standardised tests sit alongside the transcript and carry their own preparation.

On this route the spending question is unusual: the transcript responds to consistency rather than to intensive intervention, so money spent on a crisis block near the end of a year buys very little. Where it does buy something is standardised test preparation and examination stamina, both of which are specific, measurable and separable from the school course.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects Khalifa City households ask about most. Each description names what is actually being bought when a family pays for that subject, because the answer differs more than the subject names suggest.

Mathematics (0580 and 4MA1)

IGCSE Core and Extended · Pearson Foundation and Higher

The most requested subject in the community and the one where the gap type matters most. A student losing method marks needs script marking, which is cheap and fast. A student missing two years of algebraic fluency needs teaching, which is not. A marked script separates the two in twenty minutes.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

IB HL and SL

Calculus, algebra and proof, with an optional-topic paper at Higher Level. The expensive version of this purchase is a weekly lesson for two years. The efficient version is a specialist for a defined block on the specific paper where marks are lost, plus a protected independent window the rest of the time.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

IB HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and calculator technique. What is usually being bought here is the interpretation sentence rather than the mathematics, and that is a short, teachable skill. Families who buy general tuition in this subject frequently pay for content the student already has.

Physics

IB HL and SL · IGCSE Core and Extended

Mechanics, electricity, waves and, at Higher Level, fields and quantum topics. Experimental-design questions are the reliable loss and the cheapest to fix, because they are a small, well-defined set of question types. Formula provision differs between Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1.

Chemistry

IB HL and SL · IGCSE Core and Extended

Stoichiometry, energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms. Mole arithmetic is rehearsal, not teaching, and paying a specialist rate for rehearsal is poor value. Paying a specialist for mechanism work and internally assessed investigation design is good value.

Biology

IB HL and SL · IGCSE Core and Extended

Physiology, genetics, ecology and data analysis, with the heaviest command-term load of the sciences. Most of what families buy here is command-term technique, which transfers across the whole subject and often across other subjects as well, making it one of the better-value purchases available.

English Language and Literature

IB Language A HL and SL · IGCSE First Language

Analysis, comparative writing, the individual oral and the higher level essay. The purchase that works is marked written work with feedback on structure and argument. The purchase that does not is content coverage, because the student has usually read the texts and cannot yet write about them under time.

Economics and Business

IGCSE 0455 and 0450 · IB HL and SL

Markets, macroeconomics, marketing, operations and finance, assessed largely through essays and case studies. Diagram accuracy, application to an unfamiliar business and the evaluation paragraph are the three things worth paying for, and all three are short blocks rather than year-long arrangements.

Arabic

First language and additional language

Mandatory in UAE private schools whatever the licensed curriculum. The spending pattern here is backwards in most households: it gets the smallest budget and the worst slot, and it appears on the report every term. Short frequent sessions cost less per week than one long one and work better.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

IB core components

Points that are cheap to earn relative to lifting a Higher Level grade, and almost always under-bought. A small number of well-timed sessions on reading a prescribed title and structuring an argument around knowledge claims competes well with any other use of the same money.

Standardised tests

SAT and English proficiency

Separable from the school course and measurable, which makes them the easiest purchase to judge. The Ministry of Education's American-track equivalency requirements include specified minimum scores, so for some families this is a requirement rather than an enhancement.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy support, chosen by the kind of gap rather than by habit. All are delivered online, one-to-one or in a small group, over live video; none involves a tutor arriving at an address in the UAE.

Defined block against a named target

Six to eight sessions with one written target and a diagnostic at each end. This is the format that suits a technique gap, a single criterion, a standardised test or an assessed component. It has an endpoint, which means it can be judged, and it costs a fraction of a standing weekly arrangement across a year.

  • One named target agreed in writing before the first session
  • Diagnostic at the start and a comparable repeat at the end
  • Six to eight sessions is the usual length
  • Ends rather than renewing by default

Standing weekly slot for a content gap

Where topics were genuinely never learned, there is no shortcut: content has to be taught and then practised, and that takes a term or more. A standing weekly slot is the right purchase for that case and the wrong purchase for the other two, which is why the diagnosis has to come first.

  • For genuine content gaps across a syllabus
  • Work set between sessions and marked live on screen
  • Reviewed at six weeks against the original diagnostic
  • Reduced to fortnightly once the gap closes

Fortnightly review for a habit gap

Where the content and technique are sound and the independent hours are not happening, the cheapest effective purchase is a fortnightly session that marks what was produced and sets the next fortnight's work. It costs roughly half a weekly arrangement and addresses the actual problem, which is that nobody is looking at the output.

  • Half the cost of a weekly arrangement
  • Session exists to review the student's own produced work
  • Next fortnight's work set with a defined output
  • Escalates to weekly only if the pattern does not hold

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Khalifa City

01

Three different gaps, three different prices

Before any rate is discussed, work out which gap you have. They present identically — a mark lower than expected — and they cost very different amounts to close, so buying the wrong remedy is the main way money is wasted in this market. A marked script with the teacher's annotations still on it tells you which in about twenty minutes.

A technique gap shows as marks lost in the writing rather than the knowing. Working not shown, so method marks go. An 'explain' answered as a 'describe'. Units omitted, axes mislabelled, an answer abandoned because the timing collapsed. The student knows the material and cannot convert it. This is the cheapest gap to close, because the fix is behavioural and transfers across every topic at once.

A content gap shows as blank or badly wrong answers in specific topics, consistently. Something was taught while the student was absent, or taught in a different school, or taught and never understood. This is the expensive gap: content has to be taught and then practised, and across a two-year syllabus that is a term or more of sessions. There is no shortcut and anyone selling one is selling something else.

A habit gap shows as a student who understands everything in a lesson and cannot reproduce it a fortnight later. Nothing is wrong with the teaching or the technique. The independent hours are not happening, so nothing consolidates. This gap is cheap to diagnose, cheap to fix structurally and almost impossible to fix by buying more teaching, which is why a household that responds to it with three weekly lessons gets poorer value than one that responds with a protected window and a fortnightly review.

Six provider models compared on more than rate

Comparing tutors by hourly rate is like comparing cars by fuel capacity. The rate is one variable among several that determine what a household actually receives, and the others are rarely published. The table below compares models rather than brands, with every quoted rate attributed to the provider that published it and dated.

The variables that matter beyond rate are these. Whether marking of work set between sessions is included. Whether a replacement is offered if the match is wrong, and how quickly. Whether a trial exists and what condition attaches to it. Whether the person teaching holds the MoHRE private tuition work permit. And whether delivery is actually what was implied — several providers in this market route UAE enquiries to numbers outside the country without saying so.

On the permit specifically: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories from registered school teachers to university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE lists the service as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing with a two-working-day completion time. Because it is free and quick, a provider who cannot answer the question has told you something.

We have not put an IB Gram rate in the table, and that is deliberate rather than evasive. Publishing a single hourly figure would be less useful than telling you what sits inside the hour, which varies by level and format. Ask for the trial and the consultation and you will get both numbers and inclusions in writing before anything is booked.

The extras that quietly change the real hourly figure

A quoted rate is a headline, and the number a household actually pays per hour of teaching is often different. None of the items below is dishonest in itself; they become a problem only when they are not disclosed, and in this market they frequently are not. Ask about each one in writing before a first session and the comparison between providers becomes real.

The commonest adjustment is marking. If work is set between sessions and marked in the next session, that is teaching time consumed by administration, which effectively raises the price of the teaching. If marking is billed separately, the headline rate understates the cost. If no work is set between sessions at all, the rate is lower and so is the value, because consolidation is the point.

The second is session length versus the hour. A rate quoted per session where sessions run fifty minutes is a higher hourly rate than it appears. The third is cancellation policy, which determines what a missed session costs and in a household with travel can be a meaningful annual figure. The fourth is exam-term repricing, where demand peaks and some providers raise rates or restrict availability exactly when a family needs it.

Then there are the smaller items that add up: materials fees, platform fees, charges for written reports, minimum terms that prevent stopping after a poor match, and package structures that expire unused sessions. The table sets out what to ask about each. A provider who answers all of them in writing is usually a safe choice; one who treats the questions as unreasonable has answered them differently.

How many hours does a result actually take?

Nobody can honestly promise a grade, and anybody who does is telling you something about themselves rather than about your child. What can be said, with ranges rather than certainties, is roughly how many hours different goals have taken for students in similar positions, and what else has to be true for the hours to work. That is the information families in this community actually want and nobody publishes.

The ranges below assume a student who attends, does the work set between sessions, and has a protected independent window. Remove any of those three and the hours stop predicting anything, which is the honest reason tutoring sometimes fails. The variable that most changes the number is not the tutor's quality but whether the independent work happens.

Read the right-hand column as carefully as the hours column. It names the condition that has to hold, and in several rows that condition is the whole intervention. A student whose problem is timing does not need more content hours; they need timed practice and somebody marking it. A student who will not open a book between lessons needs a structure, and buying them a third weekly session is the most expensive way to discover that.

The last row is the one most worth reading. Some targets are not reachable in the time remaining, and the honest response is to revise the target or the plan rather than to sell more hours into it. We will say that when the evidence says it, because the alternative is a household spending a term on the lowest-return hour in its week.

Tutoring set against the cost of the school year

  • Compare a year of tutoring with a year of fees, not one rate with another
  • The same money spread across a year buys more hours than a spring block
  • Persistent need in a core subject is a conversation to have with the school
  • For fee rules and inspection outcomes, go to ADEK's own channels

The comparison most households make is between one tutor's rate and another's. The more useful comparison is between a year of tutoring and a year of school fees, because that is the proportion that tells you whether a purchase is sensible. School fees are the dominant educational cost in every household in this community, and tutoring at one session a week in one subject typically sits at a small fraction of them.

That framing changes two decisions. First, it makes a steady year-long arrangement look more reasonable than it does in isolation, and a crisis block in the spring look worse: the same money spread across the year buys more hours and far more improvement. Second, it stops a household treating tutoring as an emergency expense, which is the mindset that produces the three-lessons-a-week panic in March.

It also raises a question worth asking directly. If a school's fees are substantial and a child still needs tutoring in a core subject across two years, that is information about the fit between the child and the provision, and it belongs in a conversation with the school rather than being quietly solved with money. Schools in this corridor generally respond well to specific, evidenced questions from parents.

Abu Dhabi's regulator, the Department of Education and Knowledge, supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes inspection outcomes, and fee arrangements for private schools sit within the regulator's remit rather than being set freely. For current fee rules and for any school's published inspection outcome, go to ADEK's own channels rather than to a tutoring website, including this one.

06

If the budget is one hour a week, which subject gets it?

  • Spend where a grade change alters a decision, not where the mark is lowest
  • Within load-bearing subjects, prefer the closest-to-closeable gap
  • A failure affecting progression or equivalency outranks comfort
  • Count the five equivalency subjects before writing off any subject

This is the most common real question in Khalifa City and it has a clear answer, which is not the one most families reach. The hour should go to the subject where a grade change alters a decision, not to the subject with the lowest mark. Those are frequently different subjects, and the difference is worth a great deal.

Work through it in order. First, which grades are load-bearing: a sixth-form entry requirement, a university offer condition, a subject that must be passed for a progression rule. Second, within those, where is the gap closest to closeable — a technique gap in a load-bearing subject beats a content gap in one, because the same hours buy more. Third, only then consider how uncomfortable the mark looks.

A worked example. A Year 11 student has a 4 in a subject they will drop at sixteen and a 6 in a subject where the sixth form requires a 7. The 4 is the uncomfortable number and the 6 is the one that decides the next two years. The hour belongs to the second subject, and explaining that to a teenager is part of the job.

There is one exception worth naming. Where a subject is at risk of failing in a way that affects progression or an equivalency requirement, it takes priority regardless of comfort, because a failure has consequences that a middling grade does not. On the British track, Ministry of Education equivalency requires five accredited subjects at no less than grade E or 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five, so the count is worth checking before any subject is written off.

07

The cheap end: what it can do and what it cannot

  • Budget rates suit homework support, rehearsal and language practice
  • They rarely include marking, which is where consolidation becomes visible
  • Diagnosis, mark-scheme marking and assessed-component supervision need experience
  • The permit question applies at every price point, including the lowest

Published budget rates in this market run from AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik listing AED 45-65 and Tutopiya AED 33-52. Those are real prices for real teaching and they are the right purchase for some jobs. Pretending otherwise would be dishonest, and most providers at the specialist end do pretend otherwise.

What the cheap end does well: routine homework support in lower secondary, keeping a younger student moving through set work, conversational language practice, and basic rehearsal where the task is repetition rather than instruction. For a Year 7 student who needs somebody to sit with them while they finish the week's mathematics, a budget rate is appropriate and a specialist rate is waste.

What it generally does not do: mark written work against a board mark scheme with the authority of someone who knows how marks are awarded, diagnose a gap from a script, supervise an internally assessed component within the honesty rules, or prepare a Higher Level candidate for a paper the tutor has never taught. At this end the hour is usually teaching time alone, with no marking between sessions, and marking is the mechanism that makes consolidation visible.

One thing applies at every price point. Anyone providing private tutoring in the UAE needs the MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is free and valid for two years, and individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount appears here. Ask the question at every band; a low rate is not a reason for the answer to be vague.

08

Group classes, tuition centres and one-to-one compared

Khalifa City has tuition centres within reach and group classes are the cheapest paid option per head, which makes them worth considering honestly rather than dismissing. A group class works when the group is genuinely at the same point in the same syllabus and the teaching is content delivery. It stops working the moment the need becomes individual.

The structural limitation is simple arithmetic. In a group of eight, a ninety-minute class gives each student a little over ten minutes of individual attention if it is distributed evenly, which it never is. For content delivery that is fine, because the delivery is shared. For script marking, gap diagnosis or assessed-component supervision it is not, because those are individual by nature.

A tuition centre adds premises, which brings travel back into the arrangement and, in this community, a drive at the worst time of day. It also brings a regulatory dimension: a centre operating with premises and staff needs the relevant educational services permit from the emirate's authority, with annual renewal, which is a different thing from an individual's tutoring permit. Ask for the permit and the licensing authority.

The honest conclusion is that these are complements rather than competitors. A student with a genuine content gap across a topic area can be well served by a group class at a lower price, and then needs a small number of individual sessions to convert that content into marks. A household that buys only one-to-one for a content gap is overpaying; a household that buys only group classes for a technique gap is paying for the wrong thing.

What no amount of money buys

  • No grade guarantee, no refund tied to a result
  • No assessed work, at any price, from anyone
  • No board papers or mark schemes supplied by us; linked at source instead
  • No accreditation from ADEK, MoHRE or any board, because we hold none

This section exists because the rest of this page is about spending, and a page about spending that never names the limits is a sales document. There are things a household in this community cannot buy from us or from anybody else, and knowing them is worth as much as knowing the rates.

You cannot buy a grade. No tutor, however experienced with a particular paper, can guarantee an outcome, and a provider who promises a specific grade, a specific number of marks, or a refund tied to a result is making a claim about a process they do not control. You cannot buy assessed work: internal assessments, Extended Essays, Theory of Knowledge essays, Personal Projects and coursework are assessed as the student's own, a breach is treated as malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student. At least one operation in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at a published price.

You cannot buy board materials from us. Past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and syllabus documents belong to Cambridge, Pearson and the IB, and unreleased material carries a malpractice exposure as well as a copyright one. We cite and link the official source; schools hold what their students are entitled to use and will usually release past papers on request.

You cannot buy regulatory standing, and you should be suspicious of anyone selling it. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of Abu Dhabi's private schools; MoHRE issues the private tuition work permit to individuals. Neither accredits a tutoring platform, and IB Gram holds nothing from either, nor from any examination board. Finally, you cannot buy the independent hours. Those are the student's, they are where the grade is decided, and the most a paid arrangement can do is make them visible.

10

Spending a Khalifa City budget in the right order

  • First: the protected window and its output, which costs nothing
  • Second: one diagnostic session with a marked script
  • Third: a defined block against a named target, judged at both ends
  • Last, if ever: a tutor per subject, which dilutes the week and multiplies the cost

If a household has a fixed amount to spend across a year, the order matters more than the total. The first spend is nothing: establish the protected independent window and decide what it produces. That is free, it is the condition on which every later hour depends, and skipping it is how families spend a term on teaching that does not consolidate.

The second spend is a diagnosis. One session with a marked script, which tells you whether the gap is technique, content or habit. That single hour determines whether the right purchase is a six-session block, a term of weekly teaching, or a fortnightly review, and those differ by a factor of several across a year. Buying a year of weekly lessons without it is the commonest overspend in this community.

The third spend is the defined block against the named target, with a diagnostic at each end so it can be judged. Only after that block has been judged does a standing arrangement make sense, and only in the cases where the diagnosis said content. The fourth spend, if anything is left, goes to the cheap points: Theory of Knowledge, a criterion that is low across subjects, or Arabic in short frequent sessions.

What should come last, and usually comes first, is a tutor per subject. Six subjects with six tutors costs several times a targeted plan, dilutes the student's week, and produces six people each believing their subject deserves more of the independent hours. Where a household genuinely needs breadth, it is better to rotate blocks through the year than to run everything at once.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Khalifa City

Khalifa City sits at the centre of the mainland school cluster and shares it with the communities below. The notes describe what each one changes for a household weighing a tutoring budget.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa compounds immediately towards the coast with a school inside the Al Raha community. The short runs there and here are the reason both communities can use early-afternoon slots, which are cheaper to secure than the contested post-five window.

Al Raha Beach

Waterfront apartments and townhouses with a younger household profile. Al Raha Beach families buy more primary and Middle Years support, while Khalifa City households buy more examination-year work, which is a difference of age rather than of income.

Al Reef

Villa and apartment housing further along the airport corridor. Longer school runs there push tutoring later into the evening, which makes slots harder to get and arrangements more fragile than in Khalifa City.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland community inland with its own schools and a broad curriculum mix. The two communities compete directly for the same specialist tutors in the same windows, which is visible in January.

Yas Island

Across the crossing to the north-east with a strong American-curriculum presence. A school destination for some Khalifa City families and a comparison point for standardised-test spending.

Saadiyat Island

A planned low-density island further north with its own school. A minority school destination from here, with a longer run that changes both the slot and the practical format.

Al Reem Island

Apartment towers between the city island and the mainland, with high turnover. Reem households buy more transition support; Khalifa City households buy more examination support.

the Corniche

The city-island waterfront, a workplace for many parents here rather than a school destination. Households where both parents work there favour lessons that need no adult at home.

Al Bateen

Established island housing with long-standing schools. A school destination for a minority of Khalifa City families, and the direction most affected by early-evening congestion.

Al Shamkha

Newer mainland housing further inland, developing its own provision. Relevant to families comparing a move, since both the commute and the local school options change materially out there.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Khalifa City

Khalifa City and the near corridor

One of the densest school clusters in Abu Dhabi, covering British, American and IB continuum routes within a few minutes of each other. That density is why value, rather than access, is the question families here ask: there is no shortage of schools, only of clarity about what support is worth buying.

  • Reach British School
  • Raha International School
  • Emirates National School, Mohammed Bin Zayed Campus

The islands and the city, for households who travel

The longer runs north and west used by a minority of Khalifa City families. Later returns there change the economics of tutoring: evening slots cost more to secure and are easier to lose, which is worth pricing when comparing a school move.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Establish the free part first

A protected independent window with a defined output, in a fixed place at a fixed time. It costs nothing and every paid hour afterwards depends on it. Households that skip this step frequently pay for teaching that never consolidates.

  2. 02

    Buy one diagnostic session

One session with a marked script and a short written task tells you whether the gap is technique, content or habit. Those three need different remedies that differ several-fold in cost, and guessing between them is the main source of waste in this market.

  3. 03

    Name the target in writing

Not 'improve in chemistry' but 'secure method marks on Paper 2 structured questions'. A named target can be tested at the end of a block. A vague one renews indefinitely because nobody can tell whether it was met.

  4. 04

Confirm the inclusions before the first lesson

Rate per hour or per session, marking included or billed, cancellation notice, exam-term repricing, minimum term and package expiry. Seven questions, answered in writing, make a comparison between providers real rather than rhetorical.

  5. 05

    Ask about the permit

The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free and valid for two years and takes two working days to issue, so a vague answer is itself informative. Ask at every price band, including the lowest.

  6. 06

Judge the block, then decide again

A diagnostic at the end, comparable with the one at the start. If the target was met, stop or move to the next target. If it was not, change the method or the tutor, and consider that the target itself may need revising.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We price the diagnosis, not the panic

One session with a marked script tells you whether you need six sessions, a term, or a structure and no teaching at all. Selling a year of weekly lessons before that diagnosis is the standard practice in this market and it is the main source of waste.

Market figures, attributed and dated

Every AED number on this page is a rate a provider published, named and dated October 2026. We do not present the market's numbers as ours, and we give our own figures with the inclusions in writing at the consultation rather than as a headline.

Models compared on more than rate

Permit position, replacement route, trial conditions, marking inclusion, minimum terms and whether delivery is really what was implied. Those decide what a household receives, and almost none of them appear on a competitor's page.

We recommend less where less works

A habit gap needs a fortnightly review rather than three weekly lessons, and we will say so even though it halves the invoice. Group classes are the better buy for a shared content gap, and we will say that too.

The limits published alongside the prices

No promises about a specific grade, no assessed work at any price, no board papers supplied, no accreditation claimed from ADEK, MoHRE or any examination board. A page about spending that never names its limits is a sales document.

Honest about the hours nobody sells

The independent hours decide the grade and cannot be bought. The most a paid arrangement does is make them visible by reviewing what they produced, which is why our cheapest recommendation is often the most effective one.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Khalifa City: your questions answered

How do I tell whether my child needs technique help or actual teaching?+

Read a marked script with the teacher's annotations still on it. A technique gap shows as marks lost in the writing: working not shown, an 'explain' answered as a 'describe', units omitted, a final question abandoned on timing. A content gap shows as consistent blanks or serious errors in specific topics. A habit gap shows as a student who understands everything in the lesson and cannot reproduce it a fortnight later. Those three cost very different amounts to close, and twenty minutes with a script usually settles which you have.

What should I ask a provider before the first paid session?+

Seven questions, in writing. Is the rate per hour or per session? Is marking of work set between sessions included or billed? What cancellation notice avoids a charge? Does the rate change in the exam term? Do I receive notes after each session? Is there a minimum term, and do package sessions expire? And does the tutor hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit? A provider who answers all seven plainly is usually a safe choice; one who treats them as unreasonable has answered them differently.

Why does this page not publish IB Gram's hourly rate?+

Because a single figure would be less useful than the inclusions, which vary by level and format. An hour that includes marking of work set between sessions is a different product from an hour that does not, and quoting one number invites a comparison with providers whose number excludes it. Ask for the trial and the consultation and you get both the figure and what sits inside it in writing before anything is booked. Every other number on this page is a market rate with its publisher named.

Is a tuition centre group class worth considering in Khalifa City?+

For the right job, genuinely yes. A group class is the cheapest paid option per head and works when the group is at the same point in the same syllabus and the teaching is content delivery. It stops working for script marking, gap diagnosis or assessed-component supervision, which are individual by nature: in a ninety-minute class of eight, each student gets a little over ten minutes of individual attention at best. Centres also bring travel back, and premises need an educational services permit worth asking about.

Do tutors visit homes in Khalifa City?+

Not from IB Gram. We deliver tutoring in the UAE as one-to-one lessons online, over live video, and we do not send anyone to a residential address in the Emirates; visiting tutors are a service we run only in India. Published market rates for visiting tutors run AED 180-500 an hour with travel inside the figure, and independent tutors in this corridor commonly do offer visits. What we offer instead is a tutor matched to the exact board and component, with no travel priced into the hour.

How many hours does it take to move a grade?+

It depends entirely on which gap you have, and ranges are the only honest form of answer. Fixing method presentation in a quantitative subject typically runs six to ten hours. Command-term technique in a written subject runs six to twelve. Closing two or three genuine topic gaps runs ten to twenty. Building examination stamina from scratch runs eight to fifteen. All of those assume the student does the set work and has a protected independent window; remove either condition and the hours stop predicting anything.

We can afford one hour a week. Which subject should get it?+

The subject where a grade change alters a decision, not the subject with the lowest mark. Those are often different. Work through it in order: which grades are load-bearing for a sixth-form place, a university offer condition or a progression rule; then, within those, where the gap is closest to closeable, since a technique gap buys more per hour than a content gap; then comfort. The exception is a subject at risk of failing in a way that affects progression or an equivalency requirement, which takes priority.

Is cheap online tutoring ever a sensible purchase?+

Yes, for specific jobs. Published budget rates run AED 45-150 an hour, with EdFlik listing AED 45-65 and Tutopiya AED 33-52, and that band suits routine homework support in lower secondary, keeping a younger student moving through set work, conversational language practice and basic rehearsal. What it rarely includes is marking against a board mark scheme, gap diagnosis from a script, or assessed-component supervision within the honesty rules. Paying less for an hour without marking is not always a saving.

What extras tend to be left out of a quoted rate?+

Marking of work set between sessions is the big one: included, billed separately, or not offered at all, and it changes the effective cost materially. Then session length against the hour, since a fifty-minute session raises the hourly rate by a fifth. Then cancellation notice, exam-term repricing, charges for written reports, minimum terms that prevent stopping after a poor match, and package structures where unused sessions expire. Ask about each in writing; the answers differ more than the headline rates do.

Should I compare tutoring cost against other tutors or against school fees?+

Against the school year, because that is the proportion that tells you whether a purchase is sensible. School fees are the dominant educational cost in any household here, and one weekly session in one subject typically sits at a small fraction of them. That framing makes a steady year-long arrangement look reasonable and a spring crisis block look poor, which matches the evidence. It also raises a fair question: persistent need in a core subject is worth discussing with the school.

Can a tutor guarantee an improvement if we commit to a term?+

No, and an offer to do so is a reason to look elsewhere. No tutor controls attendance, sleep, the independent hours, the quality of the school's teaching or what appears on a paper, so a guarantee is a claim about a process the provider does not control. The same applies to refunds tied to an outcome. What a provider can reasonably offer is a named target, a diagnostic at each end of a block so the target can be tested, and an honest conversation when it was not met.

Do tutors in Abu Dhabi need a permit, and does it cost anything?+

They need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and it is granted free of charge for two years. The published eligibility list includes registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE lists the service as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing with a two-working-day completion time. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

Can we buy help with an internal assessment to save time?+

You can buy teaching, scope testing and feedback on a draft the student has written. You cannot buy the piece itself, at any price, from anyone. Internal assessments, Extended Essays, Theory of Knowledge essays, Personal Projects and coursework are assessed as the student's own work, a breach is treated as malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student rather than on whoever helped. At least one operation in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at a published price; what it is selling is a declaration the student has to sign.

What is the single most common way families here waste money on tutoring?+

Buying a tutor per subject. Six subjects with six tutors costs several times a targeted plan, dilutes the student's week, and produces six people each believing their subject deserves more of the independent hours. The second most common is buying a year of weekly lessons without a diagnosis first, which frequently funds teaching for a problem that was behavioural. The third is a spring crisis block, which costs more per hour of benefit than the same money spread across the year.

Will you tell us if we do not need to buy anything?+

Yes, and we do it often. Where the content and the technique are sound and the independent hours are simply not happening, the effective purchase is a fortnightly review that marks what was produced and sets the next fortnight's work, which costs about half a weekly arrangement. Where a marked script shows marks consistent with effort and prior attainment, the honest answer may be that the target needs revising rather than that more hours are needed, and we would rather say that in week one.
