IB Home Tutor in Al Raha Gardens

Families looking for an IB home tutor in Al Raha Gardens almost always start in the wrong month. The Diploma is a two-year calendar with its hardest weeks fixed in advance, and tuition bought in the wrong one of them achieves very little. This page maps those two years backwards from the exam series. IB Gram teaches Al Raha Gardens students one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; home visits are a service we run only in India.

  • Internal assessment deadlines are set by your school, and we work to them
  • Lessons are online over live video; no tutor attends a UAE address

IB & IGCSE in Al Raha Gardens

The Diploma is a calendar problem before it is a teaching problem

Parents in Al Raha Gardens usually search for a tutor in one of two months: October of DP1, after the first set of internal grades, or February of DP2, when the deadline season has visibly overwhelmed the household. Both are late. The Diploma's structure is known from the first week of DP1, and the decisions that matter are made eight to fourteen months before the exam window rather than eight weeks before it.

The reason is the coursework. Every Diploma subject carries an internal assessment, usually worth something in the region of 20% of the subject grade, and those deadlines are set by your child's school rather than by the IB. They do not fall evenly. They cluster, and in most schools the cluster lands in the second half of DP1 and the first half of DP2, colliding with the Extended Essay, the Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition, and the mock examinations. A student can be entirely on top of the taught content and still lose a grade to that collision.

Which means a tutoring plan has two distinct jobs with different timings. The first is content: making sure the taught syllabus is secure, which belongs in DP1 and the early part of DP2. The second is component work: internal assessment feedback, Paper 3 at Higher Level, and timed-paper technique, which belongs in defined blocks near the relevant deadlines. Buying one hour a week continuously for two years does both jobs badly and costs more than doing them in sequence.

The honest position on exam dates is that no specific IB session or results date appears on this page. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so rather than publish a date that might be wrong for your child's school, the instruction is to take the exam window, the results date and all internal deadlines from your child's IB coordinator or from ibo.org. What can be stated safely is the shape of the calendar, and the shape is what a plan is built from.

There is one more reason the calendar matters more here than it would in a British or American system. A Diploma grade is assembled from several components submitted at different points, so a weak month is preserved in the final result rather than averaged away by a strong one later. A rushed internal assessment stays rushed.

On delivery, IB Gram is plain. Tuition for Al Raha Gardens families is delivered one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. The market for an in-home visit in Abu Dhabi is real and runs roughly AED 180 to 350 an hour by Bestimate's rate work, with independent home tutors advertising AED 200 to 500, and the section below sets out what that premium does and does not buy during the Diploma's busiest weeks. IB Gram is an independent platform with no affiliation to any school, authority or board named here.

At a glance

  • Internal assessment deadlines are set by your school, not by the IB, and they cluster rather than spread
  • Content work belongs in DP1; component work belongs in blocks near the deadlines
  • Mock results are a diagnostic tool, and most families use them as a verdict instead
  • The Extended Essay research question should be settled before DP2 begins
  • No IB exam or results date is published here; take it from your coordinator or ibo.org
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Raha Gardens sits beside established IB continuum provision, so families here often follow the whole programme sequence. Each stage has its own calendar pressure, and knowing which one you are in determines what tuition should be doing.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led, with the exhibition in the final year as the first substantial independent project a student undertakes. There is no examination calendar, which makes the PYP the one stage where tuition timing barely matters and consistency matters a great deal. The transferable skills are reading stamina, number fluency and the habit of recording method.

Al Raha Gardens is a villa community with a short school run, so primary-age sessions can start earlier than in the apartment communities nearby. The sensible use of money at this stage is short frequent practice rather than a weekly hour, which is the opposite of how most families buy.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Criterion-assessed across four criteria per subject, with the Personal Project in MYP 5 as the major independent piece and an eAssessment option at the end. The calendar pressure here is the Personal Project, which runs alongside normal coursework and is the first time a student has to manage a long deadline without weekly checkpoints.

The MYP 5 to DP1 transition is the highest-value tutoring window in the whole sequence and the one Al Raha Gardens families most often miss. Work done in the summer between them, particularly in mathematics and the sciences, removes most of the October crisis in DP1.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Every subject carries an internal assessment. Higher Level subjects demand more taught content and, in several subjects, an additional paper. The calendar is the defining difficulty rather than any single subject.

Diploma cohorts in the Al Raha corridor are large enough that schools run structured internal deadline calendars, which is useful: a parent can obtain the whole year's dates in one request. That document is the single most valuable input to a tutoring plan and is rarely asked for.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

DP courses combined with a career-related study and the Personal and Professional Skills core, plus a reflective project. The calendar is different from the Diploma's: the reflective project and the career-related study carry their own deadlines, and the smaller number of DP courses changes how the exam term is shaped.

CP provision in Abu Dhabi is limited to a small number of campuses, so a student may be one of very few in their year taking a particular DP course within the programme. Online matching is the practical answer, because the local pool for a single-course specialism is effectively empty.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each Diploma subject below is listed with the component that drives its calendar, because that is what determines when tuition should be bought rather than what it should cover.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The Exploration drives the DP1 calendar; Paper 3 drives the final term at Higher Level. Topic choice for the Exploration should be settled before DP2 starts, because a weak topic cannot be rescued by good writing later.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Explorations here usually need a real dataset, which has to be sourced early or the project stalls. The Higher Level matrices and graph theory content arrives late in most schemes of work, which makes it the standard final-term gap.

Physics

HL and SL

The internal assessment investigation needs apparatus and time, so it is timetabled by the school rather than chosen freely. Students lose marks in the evaluation section, which is written last and usually in a hurry.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic chemistry and energetics arrive at different points in different schemes of work, and the internal assessment needs a defensible uncertainty treatment. The final-term gap is almost always the Higher Level extension topics.

Biology

HL and SL

Heavy content volume spread across the whole two years, which makes a late start punishing. The internal assessment rewards a tightly controlled investigation; ambitious designs produce data that cannot be analysed.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The individual oral and the written tasks are internally scheduled and under-rehearsed almost universally. Higher Level adds the essay, which needs a text studied in enough depth to sustain an argument without quotation hunting.

Economics

HL and SL

Three internal assessment commentaries based on published news articles, spread across the two years, which means the deadlines are staggered rather than clustered. Higher Level adds quantitative questions that reward mathematical fluency.

Business Management

HL and SL

The internal assessment differs between the levels and requires either primary or secondary research, which has to be planned early. Case-study reading discipline is the difference between a 5 and a 7 in the final papers.

History

HL and SL

The historical investigation is a defined-length individual piece with a research question that must be narrow enough to answer. Higher Level adds a regional option with its own content load arriving late in DP2.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title, both internally deadlined. The essay is where students lose most, because they treat a knowledge question as a general opinion prompt rather than an argument about how claims are justified.

The Extended Essay

Core, 4,000 words

A supervised independent piece with school-set checkpoints. The research question is the whole battle; a poor question produces a weak essay regardless of effort. It should be settled before DP2 begins.

Languages: Spanish, French and Arabic B

HL and SL

The individual oral is internally assessed and scheduled by the school, often earlier than students expect. Thin local specialist supply at Higher Level makes this the group where online matching matters most.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of buying Diploma support, each pegged to a point on the calendar rather than to a general level of need.

DP1 content maintenance

A lighter, longer arrangement through DP1 aimed at keeping the taught syllabus secure as it is delivered, typically fortnightly rather than weekly. The point is to prevent a backlog forming, because a backlog discovered in DP2 competes with coursework deadlines and cannot be cleared without displacing them.

  • Fortnightly is usually enough in DP1 if it starts early
  • Keeps pace with the school's scheme of work rather than ahead of it
  • Cheapest way to avoid a DP2 content emergency

Internal assessment feedback clinic

A short block timed to the school's own draft deadline. The tutor reads the student's own draft and responds with questions and criterion references. Nothing is written, rewritten, edited to completion or supplied, because the work must be the student's own and submitting otherwise is malpractice under IB rules.

  • Timed to the school's internal deadline, not to a generic month
  • Criterion-by-criterion questions on the student's own draft
  • A record of what was discussed, which supports the school's authenticity checks

Final-term component intensive

Concentrated work across the weeks before the exam series on the components that carry the most unexamined risk: Paper 3 at Higher Level, the late-arriving extension topics, and timed full papers. Two sessions a week for six to eight weeks, with timed conditions from the second week rather than the last.

  • Targets components the school typically reaches last
  • Timed papers early, so technique has time to change
  • Runs alongside the school's revision programme, not over it

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Raha Gardens

01

The Diploma two years, counted backwards from the exam window

Start at the exam series and walk backwards, because that is the only direction in which the calendar makes sense. Abu Dhabi Diploma candidates sit the May session. Everything else is positioned relative to it, and the positions are set by the school rather than by the IB, which is why the first thing a family should obtain is the school's own internal deadline calendar for the year.

Working back from the exam window, the final term is for timed papers and the components the school reached last. Before that sits the mock cycle, which in most schools lands a term ahead of the series. Before that, the internal assessment and core deadlines cluster: Extended Essay final submission, the Theory of Knowledge essay, and most subject internal assessments. Before that again, in the second half of DP1, sit the first drafts, the Extended Essay research question, and the Theory of Knowledge exhibition.

What this ordering reveals is that the second half of DP1 is the busiest unrecognised period in the Diploma. Students experience DP2 as the hard year and it is, but most of the decisions that determine DP2's difficulty are taken in DP1: the Exploration topic, the Extended Essay question, the subject and level combination, and whether a content backlog has been allowed to form. Tuition bought in DP1 is cheaper and more effective than tuition bought in DP2 for exactly that reason.

The table below is the shape rather than the dates. No specific IB exam or results date appears on this page, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and a date published wrongly is worse than no date. Ask your child's IB coordinator for the school's calendar, write the fixed points into it, and plan the tutoring blocks into the gaps rather than across them.

Internal assessment deadlines: what lands when, and why they collide

Internal assessments are the part of the Diploma that parents understand least and that costs the most grades. Each subject has one, weightings are commonly in the region of 20%, and every one of them is deadlined internally by the school so that marks and samples can be submitted on time. A student taking six subjects therefore has six pieces of substantial individual work, plus the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay.

They collide because schools set their internal deadlines to meet one external submission window. That compresses everything into a few weeks regardless of how evenly the work could in principle have been spread. A student who began each piece when it was set will meet the cluster comfortably. A student who began each piece when it was due will meet all eight at once, which is the single commonest reason an Al Raha Gardens family starts looking for a tutor in February of DP2.

Economics is the exception worth knowing about, because its three commentaries are set at intervals across the two years rather than as one piece. That makes it the subject where falling behind is most visible earliest, and a useful early warning signal for a parent watching for drift elsewhere.

The practical move is to ask the school for the full internal deadline calendar at the start of each year, put all of it in one place, and look for the weeks with three or more deadlines in them. Those weeks are when a student needs time rather than teaching, and they are the weeks in which a standing weekly tutoring slot is worth least. Move the hours to the fortnight before instead.

What a home tutor can and cannot do during deadline season

Al Raha Gardens is a villa community with gated access, and a visiting tutor's evening is shaped by the drive and the gate as much as by the lesson. The market rate for an in-home one-to-one visit in Abu Dhabi runs roughly AED 180 to 350 an hour by Bestimate's rate work, with independent home tutors advertising AED 200 to 500, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. The difference is the journey, and during deadline season the journey is the problem rather than the cost.

What deadline season needs is short, frequent and reactive contact. A student with an Exploration draft due on Thursday benefits from twenty-five minutes on Tuesday evening and twenty minutes on Wednesday, not from a fixed ninety-minute slot on Saturday. A visiting arrangement cannot economically deliver that, because nobody drives to Al Raha Gardens for twenty-five minutes. An online arrangement can, and that is a genuine structural advantage rather than a marketing point.

The case for a person in the room remains real and is worth stating. Younger students, and students who disengage the moment a screen appears, work better with someone present. Supervision is easier and written work on paper is easier to see. For a Diploma student working on a research question or a Paper 3 problem, those advantages matter less than the ability to share a screen, annotate a draft live and rewatch a worked solution.

IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE; in-home tutoring is something we offer only in India. Being explicit about that is more useful to a family in deadline season than a vague promise, because the worst outcome is a parent discovering at the booking stage that what they thought they had arranged does not exist.

04

The mock cycle, and how to read mock results properly

Mocks in most schools sit a term ahead of the exam series, and they are the most misused piece of information in the Diploma. A family receives a set of grades and treats them as a prediction. The grades are the least useful part of the document. What matters is the distribution of lost marks across topics and components, and that information is in the papers rather than in the summary.

Reading them properly takes about an hour and is the highest-value thing a parent can do with a mock. Go through each paper and sort every lost mark into one of three categories: content not known, method known but not shown, and nothing wrong except time. The three categories need completely different responses, and a tutoring block aimed at the wrong one is money spent on the wrong problem.

Content gaps are the easiest to fix and the least common at this stage. Method losses, where a student knew what to do but did not write the step the mark scheme needed, are the biggest single cluster across most subjects and respond to a handful of sessions on presentation. Time losses, where the last questions are unattempted, are a technique problem that needs timed practice rather than more teaching, and a student who does not practise under time will not fix it by understanding more.

The mock cycle also sets the honest answer to the question every family asks in the final term. Eight weeks can change technique, close two or three named topic gaps, and substantially improve attempt rate. Eight weeks cannot rebuild two years of missing content, and a provider who suggests otherwise is selling reassurance. The table sets out what each window can realistically carry.

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS on the same calendar

The core is where the Diploma calendar genuinely differs from any other qualification, and it is the part families plan for last. Theory of Knowledge carries an exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title. The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word supervised independent piece. Creativity, Activity, Service runs across both years with its own reflections and a project. None of these is examined in the May series and all of them have internal deadlines that compete with the ones that are.

The Extended Essay is the one where early action changes the outcome most. The research question determines almost everything: whether the essay can be answered in 4,000 words, whether sources exist, and whether the subject's own assessment criteria can be met. A question settled before DP2 begins leaves a clear run at the research. A question still being revised in DP2 term two guarantees a rushed essay regardless of the student's ability.

Theory of Knowledge fails for a consistent reason. Students treat a knowledge question as an invitation to give an opinion, when the task is an argument about how claims come to be justified within and across areas of knowledge. That is a skill rather than a body of content, and it is learnable in a small number of focused sessions, which makes it unusually good value for money if those sessions happen before the essay is drafted rather than after.

A tutor's role across all three is strictly bounded. They may discuss a research question, explain a published criterion, teach a method the student has chosen to use, and respond to the student's own draft with questions. They may not write, rewrite, edit to completion, supply text, or hand over a model to adapt. Submitting work that is not the candidate's own is malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student, including the loss of the Diploma.

Ramadan, the school run and when a session actually fits

Scheduling matters more in the Diploma than at any other stage, because the student has less slack. Al Raha Gardens has an advantage here that the apartment communities nearby do not: the school run is short, and students are frequently home early enough for a 4.15pm start. In Al Raha Beach, Khalifa City and Al Reef the realistic window opens later, which is worth knowing if you are coordinating siblings in different schools.

Ramadan reshapes the evening entirely, and the UAE school day shortens during it. The arrangement needs deciding before the month starts rather than renegotiated weekly. Post-Iftar sessions suit many Diploma students, who find the quiet late evening their most productive concentrated stretch of the year. Others do better having the block suspended and resumed afterwards. The cost of indecision is a slot cancelled four weeks running, which is the one kind of spending with no educational return.

The summer between MYP 5 and DP1, and the summer between DP1 and DP2, are the two most under-used windows in the Diploma calendar. Bridging work in mathematics and the sciences before DP1 removes most of the October content crisis. Extended Essay reading between DP1 and DP2 removes most of the February panic. Hours bought in those windows cost the same as hours bought in term time and are worth considerably more, because nothing else is competing.

Where a family travels between Abu Dhabi and abroad during holidays, online delivery on a stated time zone means the schedule follows them rather than pausing. For a Diploma student in DP2 that continuity is worth real marks, because a four-week gap in February lands exactly where the coursework cluster does.

07

Getting started, with the calendar in hand

The first thing to send is not a description of the problem but the school's internal deadline calendar, together with the subject and level combination and the most recent marked work. Those three documents let a tutor say which weeks the hours should go into, which is a more useful answer than a general offer of weekly support.

The first lesson is a free trial with no card details collected. Use it as an audition and ask three questions afterwards. Which component would you work on first, and why that one. Which week of our school calendar is the worst week to book a session, and what would you do instead. And what do you want to see from the next mock. A tutor who answers those in specifics is reading the calendar; one who answers in generalities is not.

Matching takes a couple of working days for Diploma subjects with deep supply, which includes Analysis and Approaches, the main sciences, English A and Economics. It takes longer for Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level, for language B courses at Higher Level, and for subjects taught to very small cohorts. Where nobody suitable is free we give a waiting date, disclose a tutor based outside the UAE teaching the same syllabus on Gulf Standard Time, or say we cannot cover it well.

What you should expect in return is a plan with dates in it rather than a standing slot. Blocks are proposed against named components and named weeks, with a review at the end of each term asking whether the thing the block was bought for actually closed. That discipline is the whole argument of this page: in a two-year programme with fixed hard weeks, when the hours are spent matters as much as how many of them there are.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Raha Gardens

These communities share the Al Raha corridor's schools and its late-afternoon traffic. Lessons are online, so the notes below are about timing rather than coverage.

Al Raha Gardens

Gated villa community with one of the corridor's established IB continuum schools on its doorstep. The short school run means Diploma students here can realistically start a session at 4.15pm, earlier than most of the emirate.

Al Raha Beach

Waterfront apartments where most secondary students travel inland to school. The return leg pushes the realistic start to 4.45pm or later, which matters when two siblings need consecutive slots.

Khalifa City

The deepest school cluster nearby, and the source of the longest pick-up queues in this part of Abu Dhabi. Diploma students commuting from here settle at 5.15pm or later on a weekday.

Al Reef

Airport-side community with longer bus journeys. Evening sessions after 5.30pm are the reliable option, and during deadline season families here often move to two shorter sessions rather than one long one.

Yas Island

Limited secondary provision on the island means most Diploma students commute inland. The bridge crossing is the binding constraint on timing rather than the lesson length itself.

Saadiyat Island

Small, high-fee Diploma cohorts where a subject may have a single teacher. That is the circumstance in which an external second opinion on an internal assessment draft is most valuable.

Al Reem Island

Tower living with a growing MYP population now feeding into Diploma cohorts across the mainland. Session timing here is set by lift waits and building access as much as by distance.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Large mainland sectors with mixed curricula and a smaller Diploma share. Families here more often need a single Diploma subject covered rather than a full programme plan.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Raha Gardens

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

The nearest IB continuum provision and the reason this corridor has a settled Diploma cohort. Students we support here most often ask for internal assessment feedback and Higher Level component work, which is consistent with a school that teaches content well and runs a crowded deadline calendar.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the school's internal deadline calendar

Ask the IB coordinator for the whole year's internal deadlines in one document. This is the single most valuable input to a tutoring plan and the thing almost no family requests. Mark the weeks with three or more deadlines; those are the weeks to keep clear.

  2. 02

Send the subjects, levels and last marked work

The subject and level combination tells a tutor where the content load sits. The most recent marked paper or internal assessment draft shows where the marks are actually going. Together they replace a page of description with evidence.

  3. 03

Take the free trial and ask three calendar questions

Which component first and why. Which week of our calendar is the worst to book, and what instead. What do you want to see from the next mock. Specific answers mean a tutor who plans; general answers mean one who fills slots. No card details are collected for the trial.

  4. 04

    Book blocks against named weeks

Hours attached to a component and a window rather than an open weekly slot: a feedback clinic before the school's draft deadline, a Paper 3 block in the final term, a bridging block in the summer. Each block has a defined end.

  5. 05

Review at the end of each term against the plan

Did the component the block was bought for actually improve. If yes, the hours move to the next fixed point on the calendar. If no, the approach changes rather than the schedule continuing unchanged. This is also the moment to request a different tutor.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Planned around your school's calendar, not a generic one

Internal assessment deadlines, mock windows and draft dates are set by your child's school. We ask for that calendar first and build blocks into its gaps, because hours spent in a three-deadline week are worth very little.

No unverified IB dates published

The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so this page publishes no IB exam or results date. We tell you to take them from your coordinator or ibo.org. A wrong date a parent acts on is worse than no date at all.

Short, frequent contact when the week needs it

Deadline season needs twenty minutes twice in a week rather than ninety minutes on Saturday. Online delivery makes that economic, which is a structural advantage of the format rather than a sales point.

A hard line on the core

Tutors discuss research questions, explain criteria and respond to the student's own drafts with questions. They do not write, complete or supply any part of an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge essay or internal assessment. The qualification belongs to the student.

Delivery stated plainly up front

Lessons for Al Raha Gardens families are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. Nothing here implies a tutor arrives at a villa.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Raha Gardens: your questions answered

When in the two Diploma years should we actually start paying for tutoring?+

Earlier than most families do, and in DP1 rather than DP2. The decisions that set DP2's difficulty are taken in DP1: the Exploration topic, the Extended Essay research question, the subject and level combination, and whether a content backlog is allowed to form. A fortnightly arrangement through DP1 that keeps the taught syllabus secure costs less and achieves more than a weekly slot bought in February of DP2, when the student has coursework deadlines competing for the same hours and no slack left to absorb new teaching.

Why do all my child's internal assessment deadlines land in the same few weeks?+

Because the school sets its internal deadlines to meet a single external submission window, which compresses eight substantial pieces of work into a short period regardless of how evenly they could have been spread. A student taking six subjects has six internal assessments plus the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay. The way through it is to obtain the full internal deadline calendar at the start of the year, identify the weeks holding three or more deadlines, and treat those weeks as time to be protected rather than filled.

Does IB Gram send a tutor to our villa in Al Raha Gardens?+

No. Tuition for UAE families is delivered as one-to-one lessons over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. For a Diploma student the online format also suits the work better during deadline season, because twenty minutes on a draft twice in one week is straightforward to schedule online and is not economic for anyone driving to a gated villa community for a single short session.

What should we actually do with the mock papers once the grades come back?+

Ignore the grade and read the papers. Sort every lost mark into three categories: content not known, method known but not written down, and nothing wrong except time. Those need different responses, and most families buy tutoring aimed at the wrong one. Method losses are usually the largest cluster and respond to a handful of sessions on presentation. Time losses need timed practice rather than more teaching. Content gaps are the easiest to fix and, by the mock stage, usually the smallest of the three.

My child has eight weeks before the exams. Is it too late to start?+

Not too late to be useful, but worth being honest about what eight weeks carries. In that window you can rebuild exam technique, raise attempt rate, and close two or three named topic gaps in one subject. You cannot rebuild a Higher Level syllabus that was never secure, and nobody should tell you otherwise. The most productive eight-week plan is narrow: one subject, two named topics drawn from the mock analysis, and a full timed paper every week reviewed the same day it is sat.

When should the Extended Essay research question be settled?+

Before DP2 begins, and the reason is structural rather than motivational. The research question determines whether the essay can be answered within 4,000 words, whether sources exist to answer it, and whether the subject's assessment criteria can be met at all. A question settled in the summer between the two years leaves a clear run at the research. A question still being revised in DP2 term two produces a rushed essay regardless of how capable the student is, because the remaining time is already committed to subject coursework.

Can a tutor read my child's Extended Essay draft?+

Read it and respond to it with questions, yes. Write, rewrite, edit it to completion or supply text for it, no. The Extended Essay must be the student's own work, and submitting work that is not the candidate's own is malpractice under IB rules with consequences that fall on the student, including the loss of the Diploma. What a tutor can usefully do is ask whether the question has actually been answered, point at a criterion the draft does not yet meet, and challenge a claim that the sources do not support.

Why do students lose so many marks on the Theory of Knowledge essay?+

Because they answer a knowledge question as though it were an opinion prompt. The task is an argument about how claims come to be justified within and across areas of knowledge, supported by examples that are examined rather than listed. That is a skill rather than a body of content, which is good news: it is learnable in a small number of focused sessions. The condition is that those sessions happen before the essay is drafted. Feedback on a finished essay that was built on the wrong premise can only ever be partial.

Does tutoring stop during Ramadan?+

It does not have to, and the decision should be made before the month starts rather than week by week. The UAE school day shortens during Ramadan and the evening changes shape completely. Post-Iftar sessions suit many Diploma students, who find the quiet late evening their most productive concentrated time of the year. Others do better with the block suspended and resumed afterwards, particularly if they are fasting and also sitting mocks. What wastes money is a standing slot cancelled four weeks in a row.

What is the best use of the summer between DP1 and DP2?+

Extended Essay reading and the Exploration or investigation topic, in that order. Both are decisions rather than content, and both are far cheaper to get right in July than to repair in February. A short block of five or six hours spread across the summer, aimed at narrowing a research question and testing whether sources exist to answer it, removes the single biggest cause of a DP2 crisis. Content revision in the same window is lower value, because nothing has been forgotten yet and DP2 will revisit it anyway.

What time can a Diploma session start for a student in Al Raha Gardens?+

Earlier than in most of the emirate. Al Raha Gardens has the corridor's shortest school run for families using the school on its doorstep, so a 4.15pm start is realistic on a weekday. Students commuting from here to Khalifa City or the island campuses land later, closer to 5pm. Because lessons run over live video, the buffer needed is the walk from the car to a desk rather than the half hour a visiting tutor would require, which is what makes the earlier slot usable at all.

Can a tutor outside Abu Dhabi work to the internal deadlines my school sets?+

They will if you send them. School internal deadlines, draft dates and mock windows are set by your child's school rather than by the IB, so a tutor takes them from the calendar you provide in the first session and plans around them. What the tutor brings from outside is subject and component knowledge, which the IB sets and which does not vary by country. Where an IB Gram tutor is based outside the UAE we disclose it before you book, and lessons are scheduled on Gulf Standard Time.

How many hours should a Diploma subject need across the two years?+

There is no honest general figure, and a provider quoting one is guessing at your child. What is predictable is the distribution. A subject that is fundamentally secure needs a short block near each major component: a feedback clinic at the internal assessment draft stage and an intensive in the final term, perhaps fifteen hours in total. A subject with a real content gap needs maintenance through DP1 as well, which roughly doubles it. The figure to resist is an open weekly slot across both years with no defined endpoint.

What happens if no specialist is available for a Higher Level subject?+

We say which of three things is true. Either there is a waiting time with an actual date on it, or there is a tutor based outside the UAE who teaches the same syllabus over the same live video on Gulf Standard Time, which we disclose before you book rather than conceal behind a phone number, or we cannot cover it well and say so. The third answer loses us the booking. Supply is thinnest for Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level and for language B courses at Higher Level.

Should we book a weekly slot for the whole Diploma or buy blocks?+

Blocks, in almost every case. A weekly slot across two years is easy to set up, hard to evaluate, and tends to outlive the problem it was bought for because nobody cancels it. Blocks attached to named components and named weeks are comparable, reviewable and cheaper in total: a bridging block before DP1, maintenance through DP1 at fortnightly intervals, a feedback clinic at each internal assessment draft deadline, and a component intensive in the final term. Each one has a defined end and something specific to check against.

Send us the calendar, not just the problem

An IB home tutor in Al Raha Gardens is worth most when the hours are placed on the Diploma calendar rather than scattered across it. Ask your IB coordinator for the school's internal deadline document, send it with the subject and level combination and the most recent marked work, and we will propose blocks against named components and named weeks. The first lesson is a free trial with no card details collected, and the right question to ask afterwards is which week of your calendar the tutor would keep clear. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
