IGCSE to IB Transition Course in Abu Dhabi

An IGCSE to IB transition course in Abu Dhabi is only worth buying if it names the gap it is closing. This page maps that gap subject by subject: what an IGCSE paper rewarded that a Diploma paper does not, which command terms change meaning, where the first term's marks actually go, and what a short summer block can realistically fix before DP1 begins. Delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • A subject-by-subject gap map, not a general study-skills course
  • Command-term changes between IGCSE and Diploma marking, named
  • Maths route placement checked from IGCSE component evidence
  • Scoped to a finite number of sessions with a stated end point

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The gap is specific, so name it before buying anything

Most transition courses sold in this market are general: study skills, organisation, time management, a gentle introduction to the Diploma. Those are not useless and they are not the gap. The gap between a Year 11 IGCSE paper and a DP1 paper is specific, it is different in every subject, and it is almost entirely about what the question asks you to do rather than about what you know. A student can finish IGCSE with excellent grades and lose marks steadily for a whole term in DP1 without any content being missing.

Three things change at once. First, the command terms. IGCSE papers reward description and recall generously; Diploma papers reward analysis, evaluation and justification, and they allocate marks to the reasoning rather than to the conclusion. A student who writes a correct answer without the argument that earns the marks has produced exactly what IGCSE trained them to produce. Second, the length and shape of the expected answer. An IGCSE extended response and a Diploma extended response are different genres, and nobody tells students that.

Third, the internally assessed work arrives, and it arrives marked against named criteria with published allocations rather than against a teacher's judgement. Writing to a criterion on purpose is a learnable skill and it is not one IGCSE develops, because most IGCSE subjects have no coursework at all. Add Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, which together feed up to three bonus points through a published matrix, and the first term of DP1 asks for several things the student has literally never been asked for.

There is a fourth change that is specifically an issue in this emirate. The Mathematics route decision, between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation and between Higher and Standard Level, is usually made on an overall IGCSE grade when it should be made on component evidence. A strong 0580 Extended grade earned on the questions a student always gets right, with the long multi-step questions at the end unattempted, points a different way from the same grade earned by working through them. That is a five-minute check with the component breakdown and it decides two years.

So the right shape for a transition course is a short, finite block aimed at named gaps, not a term-length programme. Six to ten sessions over the summer, each one spent on a specific thing the Diploma will ask for that IGCSE did not: criterion writing, command-term discipline in the subjects chosen, the particular calculation or argument style that the intended Higher Level courses demand. It ends. If it has not ended, it was not a transition course; it was the beginning of two years of tutoring sold under a different name.

IB Gram delivers this as one-to-one online sessions on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run in India only. For a transition block that matters practically, because the work is subject-specific and Abu Dhabi, with fewer IB World Schools than Dubai, has a thin resident pool in exactly the Higher Level subjects a student is about to start.

At a glance

  • The gap is command terms, answer shape and criterion writing, not content
  • Most IGCSE subjects have no coursework, so criterion writing is genuinely new
  • TOK and the Extended Essay feed up to three bonus points via a published matrix
  • Choose the Mathematics route from IGCSE component marks, not the overall grade
  • Six to ten sessions over the summer, with a stated end point
  • A transition course that does not end was never a transition course

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

This move spans two systems, and each side of it assesses differently. Here is what the student is leaving and what they are joining.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE, the starting point

Individually certificated subjects assessed by externally marked papers, with many subjects tiered into Core and Extended. Cambridge codes include 0580 for Mathematics and 0625 for Physics; Pearson's International GCSE Mathematics A is 4MA1. Most subjects have no coursework component, so a student arrives at the Diploma with two years of pure examination practice and no experience of criterion-marked submitted work.

IGCSE is the dominant pre-16 route in Abu Dhabi's British-curriculum schools, which means the majority of the emirate's Diploma intake makes exactly this transition. Ask the school for component marks and the tier for each subject before DP1 starts, because that is the only evidence that tells you where the real gaps sit.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme, the destination

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Each subject grade combines externally marked papers with an internally assessed component marked against named criteria. The total runs to 45 including up to three bonus points from the TOK and Extended Essay matrix. Higher Level courses carry roughly 240 recommended teaching hours against roughly 150 at Standard Level.

In Abu Dhabi the available Diploma combination is constrained by each school's timetable blocks, and a smaller cohort means fewer parallel options in each subject group. Ask which Higher Level courses have actually run for two consecutive years, because a course in a booklet is not a course with a teacher and a cohort.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP, the alternative route in

The IB's own pre-Diploma programme, assessed against four criteria per subject on an eight-point scale, with the Personal Project in the final year. Students arriving in DP1 from MYP have criterion-writing experience that IGCSE students do not, and usually weaker timed-examination technique, which is the mirror image of the IGCSE profile.

In a mixed DP1 class, which is the norm in this emirate, the teacher is managing both profiles at once. That is useful to know: the IGCSE student's first-term marks often dip relative to classmates for reasons that are entirely about criterion literacy and will correct, provided somebody names the cause rather than treating it as a slide.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

DP courses taken as individual certificates alongside a career-related study, Personal and Professional Skills, service learning and a reflective project. The certificates are graded 1 to 7 in the same way as Diploma subjects, so the same transition gaps apply to them.

Worth knowing about at transition stage, because for a student whose IGCSE evidence does not support three Higher Levels this is an alternative rather than a failure. Provision is thinner in Abu Dhabi than full Diploma provision, so availability needs checking rather than assuming.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

This is the actual gap in each subject: the IGCSE habit that stops working and what the Diploma asks for instead. These are the things a transition session should be spent on.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The IGCSE habit that fails here is answer-hunting without written method. Diploma marking pays for the argument, and at Higher Level the extended investigative paper asks the student to follow an unfamiliar multi-step problem with no worked example in sight, which no IGCSE paper required.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The gap is verbal rather than numerical. A student trained to compute and stop must now justify a model choice and comment on its limitations in language the criteria reward. Marks are lost in the sentence after the correct calculation, which is a new experience.

Chemistry

HL and SL

IGCSE rewarded recall of named processes; the Diploma asks why, and pays for the mechanism. Calculation chains get longer, so an early slip propagates further, and the internally assessed investigation introduces experimental design marked against criteria the student has never seen.

Physics

HL and SL

The mathematical load rises sharply and the extended-response genre changes. An IGCSE answer that stated the correct outcome scored; a Diploma answer must show each reasoning step, and students lose a term's marks before anyone explains that the steps are the marks.

Biology

HL and SL

Content volume roughly doubles and command-term precision becomes decisive. Outline, explain, distinguish, evaluate and discuss all pay differently in Diploma marking, and an IGCSE-trained student answers all of them with description because description was usually enough.

Economics

HL and SL

Most students meet this subject for the first time at Diploma level, so the gap is not an IGCSE habit but the absence of any habit. Diagram conventions and evaluation structure have to be built from nothing, and at Higher Level the quantitative paper surprises those who chose it to avoid mathematics.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

IGCSE reading papers rewarded locating and summarising; the Diploma rewards analysing how a text works. The unseen-text paper needs a repeatable method, and students who were strong at IGCSE English frequently dip hardest here because the old method is actively in the way.

Business Management

HL and SL

The gap is application. An IGCSE answer that defined a term correctly earned marks; a Diploma answer must apply the framework to the stimulus material, and definitions alone cap the answer in the knowledge bands no matter how accurate they are.

History

HL and SL

Narrative is replaced by argument and sourcework becomes central. Students arrive able to recount events accurately and unable to sustain a line of argument across an essay, and the reading volume at Higher Level is a genuine shock after IGCSE.

Psychology

HL and SL

Another subject most students meet first at Diploma level. Study recall comes easily and evaluation does not, which holds answers in the middle bands. The gap is learning to critique methodology, which is a skill rather than a body of content.

Arabic B

HL and SL

IGCSE language papers were heavily receptive; Diploma assessment weights production much more. The gap is extended writing in the required text types and the oral, both of which need marked practice corrected at sentence level rather than general conversation.

Visual Arts

HL and SL

The shift is from producing finished pieces to documenting sustained development and defending it. Students with strong IGCSE portfolios often arrive with no habit of recording process, which is exactly what the criteria reward.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

A transition block should be short and finite. These are the shapes that are worth paying for, and each has a stated end point.

Summer gap block

Six to ten sessions between the IGCSE results and the start of DP1, each aimed at one named gap in one chosen subject. Ends before term begins. The point is to arrive level rather than to get ahead, and getting ahead is usually wasted because the school will teach it anyway.

  • One named gap per session, agreed in advance
  • Built from the student's own IGCSE component marks
  • Finishes before DP1 starts, by design
  • Marked work in every session, not discussion

Criterion-writing block

Four to six sessions on writing to named criteria, which is the single skill IGCSE does not develop and the Diploma assesses in every subject. Taught against the criteria of the student's actual subjects rather than in the abstract.

  • Uses the real criteria for the student's chosen subjects
  • Practice pieces marked against the allocations
  • Transfers across all six subjects, so one block serves all
  • The highest-return block for a former IGCSE student

Maths route placement

One or two sessions reading the student's IGCSE Mathematics component evidence against genuine material from both Diploma routes at both levels, producing a written placement read. The single decision in this transition with consequences beyond the Diploma.

  • Works from component marks and the tier, not the grade
  • Real material from both routes, marked
  • Written read on route and level with the risk named
  • Checked against published course requirements separately

First-term support, if needed

A weekly session through the first term of DP1 where the evidence genuinely calls for it, with an explicit review at week eight to decide whether it continues. Not the default, because most transition gaps close within a term once named.

  • Only where marked work in the first weeks shows a real gap
  • Reviewed at week eight with an option to stop
  • Focused on command terms and criteria, not content coverage
  • Not bundled into the summer block as a package

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The subject-by-subject gap map

A transition course that cannot show you its gap map is selling reassurance. The map below is the whole of the product: for each subject the student is taking, what an IGCSE paper rewarded, what the Diploma paper rewards instead, and what a session therefore does. One competitor in this market has a single subheading on the IGCSE-to-IB gap and nobody researched for this project has a structured subject-by-subject version, which is why the first term of DP1 catches so many well-prepared students.

Read it as a list of unlearning tasks rather than learning ones. Almost every entry describes a habit that earned marks in Year 11 and costs marks in Year 12. That is why a transition block is not content teaching: the content arrives in term one from the school, on time, taught by a specialist. What does not arrive is anyone explaining that the way the student has been writing answers for two years is now the thing holding the mark down.

The pattern across subjects is consistent enough to state as a rule. IGCSE asks what and the Diploma asks why and so what. Wherever a student's IGCSE answer would have been complete at the point of stating the correct fact, the Diploma answer has only just begun. In the sciences this appears as missing reasoning steps; in the humanities as description where evaluation was asked for; in mathematics as an answer without the method that carries the marks.

Use the map to choose the sessions rather than booking a generic block. A student taking Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics at Higher Level needs command-term work and calculation-chain work and almost no essay-structure work. A student taking History, English and Economics needs the opposite. Buying ten generic sessions when six targeted ones would do is the most common waste in this part of the market.

02

Command terms: where the first term's marks actually go

  • Marks are allocated to what the command term asks for, not to accuracy alone
  • Description is the default under pressure and the lowest-tariff response
  • List the terms used in the student's actual subjects, not a generic set
  • Practise each term separately with marked work, not definitions
  • Three sessions usually covers a whole subject combination

If a transition block does only one thing, it should be this. Diploma questions are built on command terms with defined expectations, and the marks are allocated to what the command term asks for. A student who answers a question beginning evaluate by producing an excellent explanation has written a good answer to a different question and will score in the lower bands with no content error anywhere in sight.

IGCSE uses command terms too, but the stakes are lower because a large share of IGCSE marks sit on recall and description, which are the terms students default to under pressure. In the Diploma the higher-tariff questions almost all require something beyond description, and the default therefore fails exactly where the marks are concentrated. This is the mechanical reason a strong IGCSE cohort dips in its first Diploma term, and it corrects quickly once somebody names it.

The work is simple and it is not quick. Take the student's actual subjects, list the command terms their papers use, and for each one write what the examiner is paying for and what a complete answer contains. Then practise them separately, marked, until the shape of each answer is automatic. Three sessions typically covers the terms across a whole subject combination, because the terms repeat across subjects far more than students realise.

One warning about how this is often taught. A generic list of command-term definitions copied from a document achieves nothing, because the student can already read definitions. What changes behaviour is marked practice: writing an evaluate answer, seeing it scored against the real allocation, and seeing where the marks were not available for the sentences they wrote. We use official command-term definitions by reference and link to the source rather than reproducing subject guides, which we do not distribute.

03

Criterion writing: the skill IGCSE never asked for

  • Most IGCSE subjects have no coursework, so criterion writing is new
  • Three parts: reading a criterion, structuring to it, self-marking against it
  • Taught on the student's real criteria it transfers across all six subjects
  • Taught as abstract study skills it changes nothing
  • A tutor reviews the student's own draft and never writes any part of it

Every Diploma subject has an internally assessed component marked against named criteria with published mark allocations. Most IGCSE subjects have no coursework at all, so for the majority of Abu Dhabi students entering DP1 from a British-curriculum school, writing a piece of work deliberately designed to satisfy a lettered criterion is a completely new activity. It is also, per hour spent, among the highest-return things a transition block can teach.

The skill has three parts. Reading a criterion and identifying what evidence would satisfy it, which is harder than it sounds because criteria are written in assessment language rather than instruction language. Structuring a piece of work so each criterion is visibly addressed rather than incidentally touched. And self-marking a draft against the criteria before submission, which is the habit that separates students who improve their internally assessed marks from those who do not.

Taught against real criteria for the student's real subjects, a four to six session block transfers across all six subjects, because the underlying move is the same everywhere even though the criteria differ. That makes it the cheapest broad-spectrum intervention available at this stage. Taught in the abstract, as study skills, it achieves very little, which is why a generic transition course tends to produce a confident student with unchanged marks.

The boundary applies here with particular force, since internally assessed work is involved. A tutor may teach the criteria and what each one rewards, discuss whether a proposed research question is answerable within the word limit, read a draft the student has written and give feedback on structure, argument and the use of evidence, teach referencing, and mark practice work. A tutor may not write any part of the submitted work, supply text, rewrite a paragraph into its final form, choose the question outright or generate data. A breach is a malpractice finding against the student. There is a provider in this market selling completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750, which is an expulsion risk with a price attached rather than a service.

04

Choosing the Mathematics route from IGCSE evidence

This is the one transition decision with consequences past the Diploma, because university courses state which Mathematics route and level they require and the courses are not interchangeable. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-oriented with a no-calculator paper. Applications and Interpretation is modelling-led with technology permitted throughout and a heavier interpretive and statistical emphasis. Both exist at Higher and Standard Level, so the real decision has four possible answers.

The evidence to use is the IGCSE component breakdown, not the grade. Within a strong Cambridge 0580 Extended grade, or a strong Pearson 4MA1 performance, there are two very different profiles: the student who worked through the long multi-step questions at the end of the paper, and the student who banked the reliable marks and left those questions blank. The grade is the same. Readiness for Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is not. Ask the school for the breakdown and read which questions were attempted.

Students and parents routinely treat Applications and Interpretation as the easier route. It is not easier, it is differently hard, and the marks there are lost in words rather than in algebra: an unjustified model, or a statistical result described in language the criteria do not reward. A strong writer with weak algebraic instinct often does better on that route and a strong algebraist who writes reluctantly often does worse, which makes this a question about the student rather than about difficulty.

Check prerequisites separately and at source. Requirements differ between courses at the same institution, change between admissions cycles, and are sometimes expressed as preferences rather than conditions. Read each institution's own published requirement for the specific course, record the date, and recheck before applying. Nothing on this page should be treated as the source of record for any university's requirements, and no part of this is a prediction about an admission outcome.

What else arrives in term one: TOK, the Extended Essay and CAS

  • TOK and the Extended Essay feed up to three bonus points via a published matrix
  • The difficulty is unfamiliarity in kind, not difficulty of content
  • Internal assessment deadlines cluster, because schools work from shared submission dates
  • Place the Extended Essay outside the three heaviest subjects
  • The research question is the student's own; a tutor never proposes or drafts it

Beyond the six subjects, the Diploma adds three strands that have no IGCSE equivalent at all. Theory of Knowledge is a course about knowledge itself, assessed by an exhibition and an essay. The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent piece of research in a subject. CAS is a sustained commitment outside the classroom. The first two feed up to three bonus points through a published matrix, which means they affect the final total directly.

The transition problem is not that these are hard. It is that they are unfamiliar in kind. A student who has spent two years preparing for examinations has no experience of a long independent project with distant deadlines and no weekly test to measure progress against, and the first thing to go wrong is sequencing: the Extended Essay feels remote until it collides with internal assessment deadlines in the second year, which in most schools cluster because the school works backwards from the same submission dates for everyone.

What a transition block can usefully do here is small and specific. Explain the bonus-point matrix so the student understands that these components carry real marks. Teach what the criteria reward, in the same way as for any internally assessed work. And help place the Extended Essay in a subject that is not already one of the three heaviest, which is a scheduling decision made in the first term that saves a great deal of difficulty in the fourth.

What a transition block should not do is start the Extended Essay. The school supervises it, the school sets the internal deadlines, and the research question must be the student's own. A tutor who proposes the question or drafts the opening has crossed a line that puts the student's Diploma at risk, and families should be wary of any transition course that advertises getting a head start on the Extended Essay as a feature.

06

What the block costs, and when a shorter one is enough

A targeted transition block is six to ten sessions, which is nine to fifteen hours. Published UAE market rates as read in October 2026 put qualified online subject tutoring at roughly AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors quoting IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, and IB specialists at roughly AED 200-450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate at 200-450 for specialist work. Budget online rates run roughly AED 33-65, with Tutopiya from AED 33-52 and EdFlik from AED 45-65. Those are other providers' published figures, not an IB Gram price list.

At the qualified band, nine to fifteen hours is roughly AED 1,350-4,500. That is the whole intervention, and it is the right size of spend for this problem. Compare it with the alternative, which is not zero: a transition gap left unnamed typically turns into a weekly session through DP1 and often through DP2, which is roughly seventy hours over two years and a five-figure AED commitment. The transition block is cheap precisely because it is aimed at a cause rather than at a symptom.

A shorter block is often enough and we will say so. Where the student's IGCSE component evidence is strong across the board and the chosen subjects are ones they have studied before, four sessions on command terms and criterion writing covers most of the real gap. The students who need the full ten are those taking two or three subjects new to them at Higher Level, or those whose component evidence shows a specific weakness that the chosen Higher Level will expose immediately.

One thing worth checking before buying anything, because it is free. Many Abu Dhabi schools run their own bridging or induction programme between IGCSE and DP1, sometimes in the summer and sometimes in the first weeks of term. Ask the coordinator what it covers. Where it already covers criterion writing and command terms properly, a paid block should be narrowed to the subject-specific gaps rather than repeating what the school is doing inside fees you are already paying.

Timing it around the UAE summer and the school year

  • Pearson June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August
  • The window between results and DP1 is a few weeks, in peak travel season
  • Online sessions run from wherever the family is spending the summer
  • The command-term and criterion work can start in June, before results
  • Ramadan in term one shifts study to post-Iftar; DP content keeps arriving

The window for this block is narrow and it collides with the one period Abu Dhabi families are most likely to be away. IGCSE results arrive in August for the June series, with Pearson's June 2026 results reaching centres on 19 August 2026 and students the following day, and DP1 typically begins shortly afterwards. That leaves a few weeks, inside which many households are travelling.

Online delivery is what makes the block possible at all in that window, and this is a practical point rather than a sales one. Sessions run from wherever the family is, allowing for the time difference, so a block can proceed from Kerala, Kent or Jordan as readily as from Al Bateen. An arrangement that depends on somebody driving to a villa in Khalifa City simply cannot happen in August, which is why most transition support in this emirate ends up squeezed into September when the student is already in lessons.

A second timing option is worth considering and rarely offered: start before the results. The gap map does not depend on the IGCSE grades, because it depends on the component profile from mock papers and on the subject combination, both of which are known in June. A student who does the command-term and criterion work in June and July arrives in DP1 with the habit already forming, and the results, when they come, only refine which subject-specific sessions are needed.

Where Ramadan falls in the first Diploma term, as it does in some years, the pattern shifts rather than pauses. School days shorten, the household reorganises around Iftar, and the productive study window for many students moves to after the evening meal. That matters more in DP1 than in Year 11, because Diploma content arrives continuously rather than in revision blocks, and a month of missed consolidation in term one is visible in the mocks.

08

Regulators, permits and what a parent can verify

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work with a checkable permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. MoHRE's own service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit, Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through its smart app, website and e-services system, with no listed fee.

Two consequences for a parent buying a summer block. The permit is free, so a provider citing permit costs as a rate driver is inventing a cost. And no fine schedule is published for tutoring without a permit, so no figure should be quoted to you; press reporting states the ministry did not specify fine amounts, and a number circulating as a maximum could not be verified, which is why none appears here.

On the school side, private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are licensed and inspected by ADEK, described on u.ae as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK publishes inspection ratings and regulates schools; it approves no tutor and sets no tutoring rate. Dubai's regulator is KHDA, Sharjah's is the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah has a Department of Knowledge, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. A tuition business with premises in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a specific thing and not something a tutoring platform holds by default.

One boundary that applies to summer blocks in particular. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as barring teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct making the same point. A summer block with the teacher who is about to teach your child in DP1 is exactly the arrangement to avoid. IB Gram holds no ADEK, KHDA, MoE, IB or Cambridge approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership and claims none.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

This transition happens in every part of the emirate, but which schools a family is moving between changes how large the jump feels. These are the catchments.

Abu Dhabi Island

Several schools here run IGCSE to Year 11 and then a Diploma, so the transition happens inside one institution and the subject teachers already know the student's component profile.

Khalifa City

More families move school at this point, from a British-curriculum school to a Diploma provider, which adds an unfamiliar teaching style to the assessment change and makes the first term harder than it needs to be.

Al Raha and Al Raha Beach

Short commutes to island providers mean a genuine choice of Diploma school after IGCSE, so the transition conversation here usefully includes which school's option blocks fit the student's intended combination.

Saadiyat Island

Small cohorts mean a DP1 class may contain only a handful of former IGCSE students, so the criterion-literacy gap is less likely to be addressed as a group and more likely to need individual work.

Yas Island

Newer Diploma provision following established IGCSE provision, so ask how many years each Higher Level course has run before planning a combination around it.

Al Reef and Al Shamkha

A strong Indian and Arab resident mix, so the Arabic A against Arabic B placement question and the language-acquisition options come up at transition more often here than elsewhere.

Al Ain

Students frequently change school to reach a Diploma provider, sometimes with a longer commute, and local Higher Level specialists are scarce, which makes a well-targeted summer block more valuable here than anywhere in the emirate.

Al Mushrif and Al Bateen

Established districts where university prerequisites drive the Diploma combination, so the Mathematics route decision at transition carries more weight than general readiness.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Get the component breakdown

Ask the school for IGCSE component marks and the tier for each subject, plus the confirmed Diploma subject and level choices. The gap map is built from those two documents, and without them a transition block is generic by necessity.

  2. 02

Ask what the school already runs

Many Abu Dhabi schools run a bridging or induction programme between IGCSE and DP1. Find out what it covers before buying anything, so a paid block is narrowed to the gaps the school is not already closing inside fees you pay.

  3. 03

Agree the gap list in writing

We name the specific gaps, one per session, before the block starts: which command terms, which criteria, which calculation or argument style. If a provider cannot give you that list, the block will be general and the marks will not move.

  4. 04

    Free trial lesson

One session with the proposed tutor on the first named gap, at no charge, with marked work in it rather than discussion. You see the teaching and the marking before committing. If the match is wrong we offer a different tutor.

  5. 05

    Run the block and stop

Six to ten sessions, each producing marked work, ending before DP1 begins. The block has a stated end point and we hold to it, because a transition course that rolls into weekly tutoring was never a transition course.

  6. 06

Review in week four of DP1

A short look at the school's own marked work four weeks in, which tells you whether the gap closed and whether any level decision needs revisiting while the school's change window is still open. No ongoing commitment attaches to it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A gap map, not study skills

The block names which IGCSE habit is costing marks in which Diploma subject, and spends each session on one of them. One competitor has a single subheading on this gap and none researched has a structured subject-by-subject version.

Command terms taught by marked practice

A list of definitions achieves nothing, because the student can already read definitions. What changes behaviour is writing an evaluate answer, seeing it scored against the real allocation, and seeing where no marks were available for what they wrote.

Criterion writing transfers to all six subjects

Most IGCSE subjects have no coursework, so writing deliberately to a lettered criterion is new. Taught on the student's real criteria, one short block serves every subject, which makes it the cheapest broad intervention at this stage.

The maths route read from components

Two students with the same strong 0580 Extended grade can have opposite readiness for Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, and only the component breakdown shows which is which. That five-minute check decides two years.

It ends

Six to ten sessions with a stated finish before DP1 starts. A transition block that becomes a weekly commitment was sold as something it is not, and the alternative cost, roughly seventy hours across two years, is published on this page for comparison.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What exactly does an IGCSE to IB transition course cover?+

In a useful version, three things. Command-term discipline, because Diploma marks are allocated to what the command term asks for and IGCSE trained the student to describe. Criterion writing, because most IGCSE subjects have no coursework and every Diploma subject has an internally assessed component marked against named criteria. And subject-specific gaps drawn from the student's own component breakdown. What it should not cover is general study skills or getting ahead on content, because the school teaches the content on time and getting ahead is usually wasted effort.

Why do strong IGCSE students lose marks in their first Diploma term?+

Because the habit that earned the IGCSE grade is now the thing capping the mark. IGCSE papers reward recall and description generously; Diploma papers allocate marks to analysis, evaluation and justification, and pay for the reasoning rather than the conclusion. A student who writes a correct answer and stops has produced exactly what two years of training produced, and it scores in the lower bands with no content error anywhere. Once somebody names the cause, it corrects quickly, which is why the dip is usually temporary and the panic usually unnecessary.

How long should a transition block be before DP1 starts?+

Six to ten sessions for most students, which is nine to fifteen hours, with a stated finish before term begins. Four sessions is often enough where the student's IGCSE component evidence is strong and the chosen subjects are familiar: three on command terms and one on criterion writing covers a surprising amount. The students who need the full ten are those taking two or three subjects new to them at Higher Level, or whose component evidence shows a specific weakness that the chosen Higher Level will expose in the first month.

Is it better to do the transition work before or after IGCSE results?+

Before, for most of it, which is the opposite of what families assume. The command-term and criterion work does not depend on the grades at all; it depends on the subject combination and the mock component profile, both known in June. Doing it in June and July means the habit is already forming when DP1 starts, and the results, when they arrive in August, only refine which subject-specific sessions are still needed. It also avoids squeezing the whole block into the two or three weeks when most households are travelling.

Which IGCSE habit causes the most trouble in IB Biology and Chemistry?+

Answering every command term with description. In Biology especially, outline, explain, distinguish, evaluate and discuss each pay differently in Diploma marking, and an IGCSE-trained student answers all of them the same way because description was usually sufficient. In Chemistry the companion problem is stating what happens without the mechanism, and longer calculation chains where an early slip propagates further than it did at IGCSE. Both are trainable in a handful of marked sessions, and both are invisible on a report that simply says the student needs more detail.

How do we decide between Maths AA and AI coming out of IGCSE?+

From the component breakdown, not the grade. Inside a strong Cambridge 0580 Extended grade sit two very different students: one who worked through the long multi-step questions at the end of the paper, and one who banked the reliable marks and left them blank. Their readiness for Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is not comparable even though the grade is. Ask the school which questions were attempted, then test both routes on genuine material in one session. Check published course requirements separately, at each institution's own page, and record the date.

Is Applications and Interpretation the easier option after IGCSE?+

No, it is differently hard, and treating it as the soft route is the commonest error in this transition. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-oriented with a no-calculator paper, so the marks go on algebraic accuracy. Applications and Interpretation permits technology throughout, and the marks go on justifying a model and describing a result in language the criteria reward, which is a writing demand. A strong writer with weak algebraic instinct usually does better on the applications route; a strong algebraist who writes reluctantly usually does worse.

What is criterion writing and why does it matter so much in DP1?+

It is writing a piece of work deliberately structured so that each lettered criterion is visibly satisfied, rather than hoping a good piece of work happens to meet them. Every Diploma subject has an internally assessed component marked this way, with published mark allocations, and most IGCSE subjects have no coursework at all, so the activity is genuinely new. Taught against the real criteria of the student's actual subjects, a four to six session block transfers to all six subjects, which makes it the highest-return work available at this stage.

Can a transition tutor help my child start the Extended Essay early?+

A tutor can explain the bonus-point matrix, teach what the criteria reward, discuss whether a proposed research question is answerable within the word limit, and help think about which subject the essay should sit in, which is a useful scheduling decision. A tutor may not propose the research question, draft any part of the essay, supply text or rewrite a paragraph into its final form. The school supervises the Extended Essay and sets its internal deadlines. Be wary of any transition course advertising a head start on the Extended Essay as a feature.

Does the school already run an IGCSE to IB bridging programme?+

Many Abu Dhabi schools do, either in the summer or in the first weeks of term, and it is inside fees you are already paying, so ask the coordinator what it covers before buying anything. Where the school's programme handles command terms and criterion writing properly, a paid block should be narrowed to the subject-specific gaps your child's component breakdown shows. Where it is a social induction rather than an academic one, which is also common, the academic gap remains open and a short targeted block is worth the money.

What does an IGCSE to IB transition block cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Six to ten sessions is nine to fifteen hours, which at the published UAE qualified-tutor band of AED 150-300 an hour is roughly AED 1,350-4,500, and more at specialist rates of AED 200-450 and above. Those bands come from Unitors, TutorChase and Bestimate as read in October 2026 and are market figures rather than an IB Gram price list. Set it against the alternative: an unnamed gap that becomes weekly tutoring through both Diploma years is roughly seventy hours and a five-figure AED commitment.

My child is taking Economics and Psychology for the first time. Does that change the block?+

Yes, and it usually lengthens it. Where a subject is new at Diploma level there is no IGCSE habit to unlearn, but there is also no foundation: diagram conventions in Economics and methodological critique in Psychology have to be built from nothing, and at Higher Level Economics adds a quantitative paper that surprises students who chose it to avoid mathematics. Two or three new subjects at Higher Level is the profile that genuinely needs the full ten sessions rather than four, and the sessions should be subject-specific rather than generic.

Will the transition block continue into the first Diploma term?+

Not by default, and we would rather it did not. The block has a stated end point before DP1 begins, and a transition course that rolls into a weekly commitment was sold as something it is not. What we do offer is a short review four weeks into DP1, using the school's own marked work, to see whether the gap closed and whether any level decision needs revisiting while the school's change window is still open. Ongoing support follows only where that marked evidence calls for it.

Can sessions run while we are travelling in August?+

Yes, allowing for the time difference, and it is the practical reason online delivery suits this window. IGCSE results arrive in August and DP1 begins shortly after, which leaves a few weeks that overlap with peak travel for Abu Dhabi families. Sessions run from wherever you are spending the summer. An arrangement depending on someone driving to a villa in Khalifa City cannot happen in August at all, which is why most transition support in this emirate ends up compressed into September once the student is already in lessons.

Do tutors running a transition block in Abu Dhabi need a permit?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and, according to u.ae, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible categories include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Tutoring without one exposes the individual to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published schedule, so no amount should be quoted to you. ADEK licenses and inspects private schools in the emirate and approves no individual tutor.

Can you guarantee my child will settle into the Diploma after this block?+

No. A transition block closes named gaps and produces marked evidence that they closed; it does not guarantee a grade, a points total or an easy first term, and no honest provider offers that. What makes the block worth buying is that it addresses a cause rather than a symptom, with a list of gaps agreed in writing before it starts and marked work in every session. We publish no outcome statistics at all, because a figure without its sample size, date and method is a marketing claim rather than evidence.

Name the gaps, then buy the sessions

If you are looking at an IGCSE to IB transition course in Abu Dhabi, make the gap list the condition of the purchase. Ask the school for IGCSE component marks and the tier for each subject, confirm the Diploma subjects and levels, and ask the coordinator what bridging the school already runs. Send us those three things and we will come back with a named gap per session, a block length with a stated finish before DP1 starts, and the Mathematics route read from the component evidence rather than the grade. A free trial lesson on the first gap comes first, one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
